FROM OUR EDITOR To learn to control the lower aspect of our nature that when left unsubdued becomes the captain of the vices and superfluities ship. his practice separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom.
OUR CHOICE
26
Our vices and superfluities are the effects of unsubdued passions which prevent the proper construction of a fortified temple (character). SUBDUING OUR DISCORTANT PASSIONS This prerequisite is required in order to let our inner light shine outward and to foster an environment which allows us to build and strengthen our temples (characters) with the stones of virtue. I have found that Brothers have misunderstandings or walk away from Freemasonry during an emotional event which they suffer beyond their control. Or they never learn or understand the esotericism of their being because they dont realize that the NAME of God is a verb. Subdue means to work to control emotions not to eliminate them. Master of emotions is the first step to dominon over self and the begining of opening up the universe within Self. It is the gate keeper to the mystic realms (worlds). This is why the JD is in charge of allowing entrance to the lodge. JD represents emotions keeping out all that is inconsistent with the Builder’s Design. You cant manipulate realms if you can’t effectively use your emotional body harmoniously with the rest of SELF. Les we forget that ALL Passions & Desires, for that matter, are not BAD and should not be subdued: Examples: Ex. 1 “I have a passion to learn.” - Ego driven for self. Innate desire to receive. (subdue ego driven passion for SELF) Ex 2. “I have a passion to learn so that others may benefit.” - Ego’s passion for self is subdued and passion for your willingness to bestow prevails. All of the people who worship the beast of their passions, and his image (intellectualism without spirituality) will be tormented with fire into the abyss, with the fire and brimstone of their own desires. The mind is the den of desire. When the mind assaults us with useless representations, when the mind ambushes us with its lowly passions.

MW GRAND MASTER’S MOTTO If each one meet one and greet one eventually there will be “No One” that does not know some-one. To love one another should be the common goal for Men, Assembled, Serving, On, Noble, Standards STRENGTH GIVES GLORY “If a man makes a vow to the LORD, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth” Philippians. 4:13 “We can do all things through Christ which strengthens us” Fidelis Et Verus (Faithful and True)
Thou art born, O Bharata, in a race that hath ever been virtuous. How is it, therefore, that even thou, suffering thyself to be overpowered by passion and wrath losest thy reason?’ Hearing this, Pandu replied, ‘O deer, kings behave in the matter of slaying animals of thy species exactly as they do in the matter of slaying foes. It behoveth thee not, therefore, to reprove me thus from ignorance. ~ Mahabharata Esoteric work is similar to the precious pearl. In order to attain it, one has to abandon all kinds of secondary interests in life, leaving all that attracts us in this world to dedicate ourselves exclusively to the Great Work. We have many psychological “I’s” that personify greed, anger, lust, envy, gluttony, and so on. All these diversionary elements pull us in different directions, heading towards their own selfish interests, having their own psychic energy directed toward this or that value Comprehension is not everything. Somebody can comprehend in an integral way what the three classical forms of anger are: corporeal anger, emotional-moody anger, and anger of the tongue. Nonetheless, this person can continue having all of them. We can even give to ourselves. the luxury of controlling the body, the emotional mood, and the mind; yet, it is clear that this does not signify elimination. When one wants to extirpate passions, then one has to call upon a superior power. I want to refer to the solar, sexual, serpentine power, which is developed in the body of the ascetic. ~ Parsifal Unveiled. Beyond the physical body, we have the soul. And beyond the soul, we have the spirit. The soul – psyche or psychology – is precisely all those inner activities that we can, at any particular moment, observe. We can, at any particular moment, experience our own heart and mind, the qualities that we have within. Any moment of simple reaction will reveal something within ourselves – a mood, some thoughts, some behaviors that we are doing. The soul is something that must be developed or acquired. This is why Jesus states that in patience we shall possess our souls. In other words, we do not really possess it. There is all of this activity, but it is like a chaos – we do not possess our soul. The activity of our soul is very confused.

BLOODY SUNDAY.
The Edmund Pettus Bridge became a symbol of the momentous changes taking place in Alabama, America, and the world. It was here that voting rights marchers were violently confronted by law enforcement personnel on March 7, 1965. The day became known as Bloody Sunday. The march resumed on Sunday March 21, with court protection through Federal District Court Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr., who weighed the right of mobility against the right to march and ruled in favor of the demonstrators. “The law is clear that the right to petition one’s government for the redress of grievances may be exercised in large groups...” said Judge Johnson, “and these rights may be exercised by marching, even along public highways.”
We are caught up in passions, or what we call egos – psychological aggregates, psychological clumps of energy, which move us. These elements, which we can simply call the ego, have taken the prime material of our soul and possessed us with it.
This is why, without our own endorsement to be a certain way, certain actions of our mind and our heart arrive automatically, without any seeming effort. Something happens in our life, and we just feel something about it. We find ourselves saying or doing something; we !nd ourselves sometimes in a bad mood, sometimes in a good mood, most of the time not knowing why. These are all activities that are happening, and we are caught up in them. Within the soul is where our egotistical processes, the ego, exists.
The cain and abel allegory to teach us to subdue our passions and ego and control our lower nature to not be hubris and think we can submit anything to the supreme being with the intent of gaining without approaching the GOATU through SPIRIT not the flesh.
R.W. ORLANDO L. WILSON 33, GRAND CHAPLAIN, M.W.G.M COREY D. HAWKINS, 33 AND M.W.G.M NOEL C. OSBORN 33 The MWPHGL MD participated in the 57 th Anniversary of the Historic March in Selma Alabama in support of the Voter Rights Act - Culminating with us crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge. This was an awesome experience for the members of the Jurisdiction who attended.
OUR EGO HAS POSSESSED US INSTEAD OF US POSSESSING OUR SOUL.
When one frees the energy that the psychological “I’s” have trapped, one takes out the energy from all our materialistic and egotistical interests, thereby freeing oneself.
In order to concentrate on only one thing, thereby performing the Gnostic Work precisely, one must extract this energy from all of the passions and desires that entrap us within this ego. By doing this, one obviously forms a union with the Work, thereby dedicating a fullness to the work on oneself, which, naturally, will lead us to radical transformation.t is necessary for us to understand this point if we really want this radical transformation. Undoubtedly, having love for the esoteric work is a basic factor. To speak of love, we must be very precise in the analysis, so do not forget that I am exact in the investigation and demanding in the expression. ~ Revolutionary Psychology by Samael Aun Weor
Many people understand each other merely through the sexual aspect, and this is only sexual love. Other people have their love centered only in the emotional aspect. This love is full of bitterness, jealousy, and passions. Unquestionably, only conscious love deserves our veneration, but for it to exist it is indispensable for us to work on ourselves. We need to eliminate the undesirable psychological elements within us. 7

R.W. KEVIN L. BARNEY, DEPUTY GRAND MASTER To my Bothers, I am humbled and proud to serve as your Deputy Grand Master. I offer my most sincere thank you for your dedication and determination that you have shown in these challenging times. We are all frustrated with the change of lifestyles due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, particularly with the Delta and Omicron variants of the COVID-19 virus now progressing. I know that many of you have a fervent desire to return to your Lodges.
opportunity to stop and reflected on who we are as Master Masons and how we conduct business. History will judge how well we have used this opportunity. My Brothers, the level of enthusiasm amongst the craft is very high to return to our “labor.” It is my hope that in the days to come, we maintain that enthusiasm with
Like Martin Luther King, I too have a dream. I dream of a fraternity that has members so inspired as to make Lodge meetings a priority, they would never be inclined to demit. I dream of a fraternity that cultivates and improves the minds of its members, which would encourage more free-thinking men to seek admission. I dream of a fraternity that does such a tremendous good for its communities and the people that live in them that the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland and its Jurisdictions becomes that beacon of light on the hill for all to see and emulate.
These past two years have created challenges that none of us could have predicated or expected. However, we still have a ways to go until we come back to some sense of normalcy. In the meantime, we need to continue following the direction of the Grand Master and his COVID-19 Reintegration Plan. Trying to decide the contents of this address has not been easy. I had hoped to give you some insight into my Masonic philosophy and the direction I think we should be going. However, with the ground constantly shifting under our feet, particularly over the last 24 months, it has been difficult to say the least. We must look at and consider the positives that have come forward as a result of dealing with this pandemic. For one, we have become increasingly aware of the importance of maintaining contact with one another. As a result, we have instituted an innovated path of communication. We are now meeting virtually not only conduct the business of the lodges, but, at the very least, to put eyes on one another. This pandemic has given us an 8

To the Most Worshipful Grand Master Noel C. Osborne Sr., I would like to express my most sincere and personal thanks for your dedication to this craft and your confidence in me. I am sure I speak for the entire Jurisdiction in extending to you, and Sister Adele, our hopes and prayers for a successful administration. I personally wish and we humbly pray that your future will be marked with Peace, Love and Good Health. I look forward to working with you over the next three years. Thank You, to those of you who have so
freely given of your talents by coming forward to serve in the various Grand offices, I look forward to working with you, I know we can have productive and rewarding year. To all the members of this Grand Jurisdiction, Thank You for the encouragement and pledges of support you have provided – My hope is that at the end of this term I will not be found wanting. Finally, but by no means last, Thank You to my best friend and partner– Caroline. You have never wavered in your support and encouragement especially over the last fifteen months. What you have endured over the years truly is worthy of Sainthood. Thank you most sincerely, I Love you.
CONCLUSION Brethren, in conclusion, I would like for us to return for a few moments to June 21, 1866 and reflect on the challenges our predecessors faced and overcame to create this Grand Jurisdiction. I would like to borrow the words of our first Grand Master, MWB William H. Davies and I quote; “Let us now look upward and take courage; let the ruling ambition of every Master of a lodge be, not who can show the largest roll of membership, but who can boast of the best men, men who fully appreciate and live up to the principles of
Masonry, brotherly love, relief and truth.” “Remember brethren, that our subordinate lodges will advance in numbers and usefulness as they advance in morality; and their strength and influence will depend more on their moral character than their numbers ….. The conferring of degrees does not make Masons, knowledge of the sublime principles upon which Masonry is founded, knowledge of the moral obligations, which it enjoins, and the practical duties which it inculcates are absolutely requisite to form the true and accomplished Mason”. End of quote. It has been said that the mantle of leadership rests heavily on the shoulders of him who wears it and after reflecting on the commitment and contributions of my predecessors that point becomes apparent. The Craft in Nova Scotia has been well served since that meeting of June 21, 1866 and I now give you my commitment that I will do my utmost to devote my attention to the tasks at hand. Brethren, there is work to be done, let us with one accord move forward. Respectfully & Fraternally, R.W. Master Kevin L. Barney, 33° Deputy Grand Master M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Maryland
Thus it follows, if we do not work on ourselves successfully we will never know what conscious love is. How can anyone, purely emotive and full of passions, jealousy and suspicions, experience conscious love? So to give birth to conscious love we must eliminate these elements.
This matter about destroying, discarding or eliminating psychological defects is radical in order to awaken consciousness.Multiple aggregates of a subjective type (let us call them ‘I’s) particularize and give their characteristic feature to our passions.Comprehension and elimination are indispensable in order to discard all of that variety of subjective elements which constitute the ego, the myself, the itself.
Fraternal Twins same mother two different fathers. Abel was the son of Adam and Cain was the son of the angel Samael who road on the back of the serpent. Cain created mechanical works while Abel created works within natural law. Cain slew Abel for control over Abel’s woman. Cain is the ego and Abel is willpower. The woman is the soul of man. We fight this battle daily and internally. It’s funny that when you kill your brother, you and your offspring come under protection of God and you receive a Mark and by this mark no one can bring you harm. You see in this, that Cain’s offspring are actually sparks of the divine.
The Cain in us “lower nature or lower Chakras”; represented sometimes by the “Serpent” does not always like this. He can be related to the ego or the intellect. Being a “tiller of the soil” has nothing to do with farming. The soil is the soil of consciousness. Cain has a rightful and important place in us and in our expression of spiritual ideas. However, the Cain method cannot and does not have the capacity to give life to or expression to Reality. It seeks to till the soil of consciousness with human desires. It seeks personal glory and satisfaction from outer accomplishment.
Rejection of Cain’s offering does not mean rejection of the ego. It does not mean that God rejects us as human beings. It only means that the great spiritual realities of life cannot be achieved through personal effort alone, they cannot be achieved just by tilling the soil of consciousness. The Cain side of our nature is often impatient and jealous. If you kill the desire to forgive, Cain kills Abel. - R.W. A. S. Vaughans, Sr. 33°

R.W. WILLIAM DAVIDSON III, SENIOR GRAND WARDEN ON THE LEVEL As we are well into this new administration, I would like to remind everyone that we must as much as possible return to supporting our Lodges, OES Chapters and Grand Lodge. There seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel as far as coming out of this devastating pandemic. Being careful and taking the appropriate actions and following the CDC guidelines when attending meetings will assist us in getting back to normal.
In a lot of the breakout groups that I have attending a very unsettling issue is starting to arise, and it seems that We have forgotten that we are an organization based on “Friendship and Brotherly and Sisterly Love” It’s like we have forgotten how to treat each other. As we get closer to the end of another school year, I’m asking that those Lodges and Chapters that award scholarships strongly consider the High School Seniors that we have working in our Knights of Pythagoras and the Simon Cunningham Youth Fraternity. Please forward any scholarship information to RW Thomas Mays, State Director of the Knights of Pythagoras to mayst1@verizon. net and to Sister Jacqueline Barber, Grand Youth Supervisor to jrbarber71@gmail. com these will also be the points on contact should you have any youth that would like to join either group.

Our Masonic and OES rituals teach us to be better people, they are not just words written in a book that we carry around and only pull out when we are asked to do degree work. WHAT DO MASONS Knights of Pythagoras and celebrations for Juneteenth with our communities. We also DO? make Masons and ceremoniously bury our dead. Masons are caring, compassionate Masons spread the cement of brotherly and charitable men. Freemasonry teaches love and affection among its membership us that charity is the most important act and the community at large in which that we can and must do if we are to get into they live. We care about the homeless, heaven, where all good Masons hope to the hungry, the sick, in the downtrodden. arrive. We learned by the parable of “Jacob ladder”, that extended from earth to heaven, had three principal rounds of which are denominated as Faith, Hope, and Charity which admonishes us to have faith in God, Hope in immortality, and Charity to all mankind.
The greatest of these is Charity. For Faith may be lost in sight. Hope end in fruition, but Charity extends beyond the grave, through the bondless realms of eternity. Our goals, hopes, and endeavors, are to make the world a better and kinder place, one Brother at a time.
THE MEASURE OF A MASON Remember those words you heard echoing throughout the chamber as you stood in the Northeast corner of the lodge by the Worshipfull Master. ‘You now there stand and upright man and a Mason, and I give it to you strictly in charge to ever walk and act as such, before God and man’…. These words marked the beginning of your journey in search for light in more light in masonry. Following the ceremonial right of making you a Mason and a brother, the learning and enlightenment of the Masonic order would start, with many questions… what do Masons do? What makes a man a Mason? And what are Masons goals? There are many more questions that can be asked however, I will only touch on What Masons do. 12
We endeavor to make a difference in their lives and in the communities, we live in through, contributing to local food banks, contributing educational supplies for the school children, providing annual scholarships to children seeking college education, supplying coats to the homeless in the winter months, and providing toys to underprivileged children at Christmas. n November 20, 2021, at Morgan State University, in Baltimore, Maryland, the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge F.& A.M. of Maryland & It’s Jurisdiction, Inc., made history by signing a memorandum of understanding with the University to house its artifacts in the Beulah M. Davis Special Collections Department at the Earl S. Richardson Library. This event was the culmination of a three year collaboration between the Grand Lodge’s Committee on Archives, Chaired by R.W. Lewis Williams, Jr. and the University Archivist, Dr. Ida Jones. The Committee consisted of R.W. David Johnson (photographer at the event), R.W. Lawrence N. Gray, R.W. Albert Queen, R.W. Nathaniel McFadden, PWM Gloria Porter, and R.W. Seymour E. Chambers. After a brief program, M.W.G.M. Stanley signed the formal memorandum and presented the Grand Lodge’s original charter, along with the charters of Friendship Lodge No.1, St. James Lodge No. 2 and Enterprise Lodge No. 3, to Dr. Jones to deposit in the University’s archives. By providing these documents and other artifacts to Maryland’s flagship HBCU, future generations and researchers will be able to review and learn about the history, contributions and significance of Prince Hall masonry in the state of Maryland. A guided tour was provided for the attendees to review some of the items that will be deposited, to include the book Maryland Men of Masonry: The Most Worshipful United Grand Lodge 1825-1925, which celebrates the Grand Lodge’s first 100 years. On loan from Baltimore’s Great Black in Wax Museum were wax figures of M.W.P.G.M. Willard W. Allen and M.W.P.G.M. Samuel Daniels (Pictured below). We gathered on that day not only to recognize and deposit artifacts from our Grand Lodge, but to commemorate a relationship between two institutions that have long served as a guiding light in the lives of Black Marylanders for close to 200 years. The historical relationship between Maryland Prince Hall masons, and Morgan State

University is a story worthy of our understanding and appreciation. It should be noted that only 22 years separate the establishment of the First Colored Grand Lodge of Maryland, A.F. & A.M. in 1845, and the establishment of the Centenary Biblical Institute quia is magnist, nossenda pratet qui volestr upicienim aut maximusamet opta quis sam vollabor auditatempor abo. in 1867. Fundamentally, our Grand Lodge and the University are inextricably linked in the struggle for the liberation, education and self-determination of our community. Some may ask, “why should our Grand Lodge deposit some of our treasures in Morgan’s vaults?” let me highlight for you the relationship. Morgan’s first Black President, Dwight Oliver Wendell Holmes is the son of Rev. John A. Holmes, for whom we have a lodge named in his honor. Rev. Holmes pastored the Sharp Street Methodist Church in Baltimore, the very church that held the first classes of the Centenary Biblical Institute that would become Morgan State University. At least 11 buildings on the campus are named in honor of noted Maryland Prince Hall Masons, and at least eight (8) buildings had the cornerstone dedication ceremonies presided over by the Grand Lodge, with Baldwin Hall being the first in 1929. Furthermore, Maryland Prince Hall Masons have been at the helm of leadership at Morgan, with brothers Carl J. Murphy, the Hon. Judge Harry Cole, and the Hon. Kwiesi Mfume all serving as chairmen of the University’s governing board, along with the Hon. Elijah Cummings, and M.W.P.G.M. Willard W. Allen, serving on the board as well.

MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT On December 28, 2021 RW Isom released a self-produced jazz album titled BoaZ Jazz. This digital EP has 16 songs plus a bonus track and is now available on all the major music streaming services, including Apple/ iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, Amazon Music, and more importantly, BandCamp. The album, BoaZ Jazz, is a mix of smooth jazz and beebop songs, featuring veteran session sax player, “EZ” Ndugu Evetts, from Durban, South Africa. Steve composed, arranged, produced, engineered, and played acoustic and electric basses, piano, guitars and percussion on all 17 songs. With this project, RW Isom has generously offered to help support the fundraising goals of our PHA Maryland Jurisdiction, i.e., lodges, chapters, youth fraternities, KOP etc. Here’s how it would work: a member of a lodge or chapter purchases the digital album on the BandCamp website: he or she then clicks on the “Contact Covert Action Music” link and enters his/her name, email address and enters the supporting lodge or chapter’s name in the subject field. The digital album costs $7. Each lodge or chapter will receive $3 for each digital album purchased through BandCamp (50/50 split). RW Isom’s label name is “Covert Action Music”. He spent 42 years serving the intelligence community (DoD, NSA, CIA, NRO and DIA) as an Intelligence Analyst, Russian Linguist, and Operations Officer, hence the name of his label. During his career, RW Isom would often deploy on missions with special operations units. To unwind from these stressful missions, he would find release playing his bass guitar or keyboard. Composing music continues to be his therapy during the pandemic. In closing, I would like to congratulate RW Isom on his recent album release and thank him for offering us the opportunity to help raise funds for the PHAmily. Let’s support our creative Brother’s efforts by purchasing his EP as he continues to show his commitment and support to the Prince Hall Family. share with our Brothers, and Sisters and our communities the history and significance of our works and contributions. It is our duty to write the narrative of ‘our’ story so that generations to come will take pride in the legacy we leave for them to inherit, just as those who have gone before us. This joint collaboration between the Grand Lodge, and Morgan State University should serve a model for other jurisdictions to work with historically Black colleges and universities in their states to preserve not only masonic history, but Black history. Those brave students met to strategize their protest at the University’s Chapel, then called the Christian Center. In the mid 1990’s, Past Grand Chaplin Marion Curtis Bascum, served as the Director of the Center, and it was during that time, the Grand Lodge provided $80,000.00 towards the renovations of the Chapel, so that students could continue to have a spiritual home on the campus. The warrior-scholar, and Master Teacher John Henrick Clarke said, “History is a clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day. It is also a compass that people use to find themselves on the map of human geography. History tells a people where the still must go, and what they still must Be.” Through to telling of our history, we leave a perpetual trestle board of what we have done, and what we still must achieve. Prince Hall Freemasonry has a deep and rich history that we must rediscover/reclaim as an homage of the courage of our forefathers of African Lodge No. 459. We, in this day, are heirs to that legacy. Not only must we reclaim that history, but we must proclaim it. We must

THE BUSY BEES HAVE BEEN BUZZING AROUND THE COMMUNITY, DOING GREAT WORKS! CHECK OUT WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE 2021-2022 MASONIC YEAR! OCTOBER Park Beautification Activity on Saturday, October 16th, 2020 Our Sisters took part in the clean-up of the Arundel Village Park and Farring-Baybrook Recreation Center fields located at 4300 W. Bay Avenue, Brooklyn, Maryland 21225 from 8:45am to Noon. In our efforts we gathered approximately 30-40 bags of trash and plant approximately 15 trees. We had the fortunate opportunity to meet the Mayor and City council member of Brooklyn, Maryland. This project gave the community and neighboring communities the opportunity to enjoy a safe and clean location to host festivals and activities, exercise, and just simply play. Trunk or Treat on October 31, 2020 In a Partnership with the Turner’s Station Recreation Council, we co-sponsored this activity and developed a community relationship with the members of this council. In the parking lot of the Sollers Point Recreation Center - located at 323 Sollers Point Road, Dundalk, Maryland 21222 from 4pm to 8pm - our Brothers and Sisters decorated their vehicles (7) with 22

NIGGERDOM IN REGALIA! BY JOSEPH A. WALKES, JR (FROM POMEROY’S DEMOCRAT AUGUST 28, 1871)
“LET MASONRY USE THE PEN AND THE PRINTING PRESS IN THE FREE STATE AGAINST THE DEMAGOGUE.” - ALBERT PIKE (MORALS AND DOGMA, PG. 47) In his book, The Story of Freemasonry, W.G. Sibley concedes that race prejudice exists to some extent among Freemasons, although properly it can have no place in so cosmopolitan an institution, and while it has not barred any race from Freemasonry (sic); it has denied recognition in some localities to the Masonic bodies of the Negro race..! An incident is recorded in American Freemasonry, that is so vile and contemptible; so loathsome and repulsive; so revolting and obnoxious; in a word, so unmasonic that it makes a mockery of the very tenets and dogmas that is the foundation of Freemasonry; and belittles those who are true to its principles. The doctrine of Brotherly Love in which Freemasons are taught; that by the exercise of it is to regard the whole human species as one family. The high and low, rich and poor, who as created by one Almighty Parent, and as inhabitants of the same planet; are to aid, support and protect each other. Freemason’s are taught that on this principle, Masonry unites men of every country, sect and opinion; and conciliates true friendship among those who might otherwise have remained at a perpetual distance. But events recorded in American Masonic history often belittles
these honorable and exalted expressions. COMPLAINTS OF “NEGRO
RULE!” “Mississippi,” noted the famed and scholarly Prince Hall Freemason, W.E.B. MEMBERS OF THE 41st and 42nd Du Bois, “was a curious state in which CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES. to study Reconstruction.” Bro. Du Bois Standing are Representatives Robert C. De, recorded that in 1860, there were 353,849 Large of South Carolina and Jefferson H. Caucasians and 437,404 Blacks, of whom Long of Georgia. Sitting from left to right: less than 1,000 were free. After the Civil Senator of the United States H.R. Revels of War it was required that the State Would Mississippi and four other Representatives; assimilate a voting population of nearly Benjamin S. Turner of Alabama, Josiah T. 450,000 former slaves, which in turn Walls of Florida, Joseph H. Rainey and R. would have a political significance as never Brown Elliot of South Carolina. Though the seen before. By 1867, there was 46,636 “Old Charges of Freemasonry” specifically white voters registered compared to declares that politics must not be brought 60,137 Black voters. By 1869 the political within the doors of the Lodge; the Grand importance of the Black vote was being felt Master of the Caucasian Grand Lodge of as Blacks were being elected to positions of Mississippi, Thos. S. Gathright protested importance. And though the spectacle of Black suffrage within his state, and recorded Blacks voting for public office shocked the his feelings in his address before the Grand White south, Lodge in 1870. “Negroes are not Masons, but by the laws of Congress, they are voters. An exciting canvass has just passed in our BLACKS WERE NOT State, and officers have been elected by the REPRESENTED IN votes of a people, formerly our slaves, and now regarded by us as unfitted for the high PROPORTION TO THEIR dignity and the weighty responsibility of NUMBERS; YET THEIR VERY acting the part of legislators….”

PURE POLITICS “THE NEGROES WHILE THEY ARE CALLED, IN NUMBERS, THE POLITICAL POWER OF THE STATE, ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR BEING IN THIS COUNTRY,....
OR FOR OCCUPYING THE RESPONSIBLE PLACES TO WHICH THE RECENT POLITICAL AND SOCIAL REVOLUTION, IN OUR MIDST, HAS ASSIGNED THEM. THEY ARE IGNORANT, AND OUT OF THE SEVENTY THOUSAND WHO VOTED IN THE LAST ELECTION, NOT ONE HUNDRED THOUGHT OR REASONED FOR THEMSELVES, OR COULD THINK OR REASON UPON THE CONSEQUENCES, IMMEDIATE OR REMOTE, THAT MIGHT FOLLOW THE RESULT.”
As a last defiant and pathetic act to a situation they could not understand, control or immediately change, the Grand Lodge voted that the “testimony of a negro -formerly a slave could not be received in a Lodge trial: How ironic, since the only object of a Masonic trial is to seek the truth. And it is only in Masonic trial that no advantage is ever permitted to be taken of legal and verbal technicalities, as in a profane court, which often enable the guilty to escape. Yet if the truth be known by a Black, his testimony would not be permitted by this Grand Lodge. As the
Caucasian Grand Lodge of Mississippi was overreacting to events, two Black Prince Hall Freemasons were elected to high offices by the voters. Bro. (Rev.) Hiram Rhodes Revels became the first Black elected to the United States Senate, filling the unexpired term of Jefferson Davis, former President of the Confederacy and also a non-Mason, and Bro. James R. Lynch became the Secretary of State of Mississippi. Bro. Revels, a Past Grand Chaplain of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio in 1856; a member of Lone Star Lodge #2, St. Louis, under the jurisdiction of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Missouri; was born in Fayetteville, N.C., of free parents. He attended Quaker seminaries in Indiana and Ohio, and Knox College in Illinois. Ordained a minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1845, he taught and preached in Leavenworth, Kansas and St. Louis, Missouri. It was in St. Louis on January 28th, 1858, that he would make his famous “An address delivered to the members of the Prince Hall Lodge No. 10 F.& A.M.” (the lodge was then on the register of Ohio, is now numbered one under Missouri), During the Civil War he helped organize Black regiments, and was made Chaplain for Black troops in Mississippi, In 1866 he settled in Natchez, Mississippi, and was elected Alderman in 1868. He became a State Senator in 1870, and in the same year he was elected to the United States Senate. Bro. James R. Lynch, Worshipful Master of Lynch Lodge #28 F. & A.M., Jackson, Mississippi, was born in Baltimore on January 8th, 1839, and in his youth obtained a good education. In 1858 he joined the Presbyterian Church in New York, but soon thereafter was accepted by the African Methodist Episcopal Conference in Indiana. He transferred to Baltimore, and in 1863 went to South Carolina as a missionary to the freedman from the A.M.E. church. From 1866 to June 15, 1867, he was editor of The Christian Recorder in Philadelphia. Later he was with the Freedman’s Bureau in Mississippi and in 1871 he was elected Secretary of State. (A major speech of Bro. Lynch is recorded in The Christian Recorder for May 13, 1865.) While these events were taking place in

in Mississippi, the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Missouri, which was formed after the Civil War (December 20, 1866) began to follow in the footsteps of its Mother Grand Lodge, Ohio, and began to expand its influence and Masonic jurisdiction outside of its State. Missouri would charter Lodges in Leavenworth and Lawrence, Kansas; Jackson, Vicksburg, Natchez and Greenville, Mississippi (the Lodge in Vicksburg was Stringer Lodge No. 22, and its Worshipful Master was Thomas W. Stringer. Bro. Stringer was the first Grand Master of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio, serving from May 3, 1849 to June 1851. He was born in the year 1811 where is not sure. He was one of the early members of the True American Lodge, and after that Lodge received its warrant from the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, Bro. Stringer was appointed District Deputy Grand Master of the territory west of Pittsburg and as such granted a dispensation to certain Brethren in New Orleans to open a Lodge. The Lodge, Stringer Lodge No. 3 is under the register of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Louisiana. Bro. Stringer would become also the first Grand Master of Prince Hall Masons in the State of Mississippi, serving in that position from 1875 until his death August 23, 1893. his Grand Lodge is named the Most Worshipful Stringer Grand Lodge F. & A.M. Prince Hall Affiliate); Memphis, Chattanooga, Knox-ville and Brownville, Tennessee; » Selma, Alabama;” Little Rock and Helena, Arkansas;’? Keokuk, Muscatine and Des Moines, Iowa;’” and St. Paul, Minnesota.” Missouri was also extending its Masonic intercourse and correspondence to foreign Grand Lodges such as the Grand Lodge of England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Prussia, The Three Globes at Berlin and the Grand Orient of France and Italy.’*In 1870 alone, more than two hundred letters were sent from Missouri to other Masonic bodies, Prince Hall and Caucasian, around the world.”s Dear Sir and Bro. Some little time ago an American Citizen of African descent--Clark by name--came to this city and established a nigger lodge, under a dispensation of
his own, as Gd. Master of Nig. Masons in Mo. The Lodge is called the H.R. Revels Lodge U.D., in honor of Senator Revels of this State, who claims to be a Kt. T., I am informed. This man claims that the G. Lodges of Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota and several other States, have recognized the colored Masonsso called--in their jurisdictions, and as I am desired to believe, have extended to them the right hand of fellowship. This being the first intimation have received of action on the part of those bodies, and from the very questionable source from which the information comes, I am slightly inclined to believe that the man Clark has lied. I am very much afraid that the members of H.R. Revels Lodge U.D., will be too old to enjoy it when they are recognized as Masons by the G. Lodge of Mississippi, or any of its subordinates. Please give us any information as to the action of any G. Lodge on this subjeet of which you are in possession, in your department of Pomeroy’s Democrat, obliging thereby the legitimate Masons of this city. E.G. De L—Unknown to Grand Master Clark at the time, as the Masonic editor of Pomeroy’s Democrat attempted to conceal the identity of the writer, there was in fact a Worshipful Master of Harmony Lodge No. 1, located in Natchez on the register of the Caucasian Grand Lodge of Mississippi by the name of E. Geo. De Lap. In F.G. Tisdall, the Masonic Editor published his answer to De Lap’s letter of inquiry.
to tell the truth? What manner of men were those who called themselves Freemasons. How could men who had knelt at the sacred alters of Masonry, before the Volume of Sacred Laws, compose such letters? Letters so vile and disgraceful, that it defiles and shames the very nature of Freemasonry.
ANSWER
And what manner of man was Fitz Gerald Tisdall, 33°?
The man Clark is a bastard, spurious and illegitimate Mason, and has, as our correspondent was inclined to believe, lied. There does not exist, a Lodge composed of “American citizens of African descent,” in either the “United” or the “’untied” States, and the founder of this negro--so called Masonic colony, if he received any fees, Revel-ed at the expense of his fellow descendents of Ham. Neither the Grand Lodges named, nor any other Grand Lodge, has by act or deed recognized the clandestine association of negroes claiming to be Masonic organizations. The negro Clark knows that his statements are false, but no more false than his pretentions to be a Mason. He is a fraud, and a very black one at that. When will the negroes learn
It has been proven time and again that Prince Hall Freemasonry’s burden has always been those who claim to be Freemasons. Those who dishonor the spotless white lambskin apron, the token of innocence and purity, the honored badge of a Mason, while like a sanctimonious parasite proclaim before the world, the tenets of Brotherly Love. Mississippi in 1870 would also see a rise in terrorism and anarchy; as the so called Knights of the Invisible Empire of the Ku Klux Klans, which was founded and organized by a former Lieutenant General of the Confederate Army and who would be honored by being initiated in a “regular” Masonic Lodge. “ The Klan would begin its crimes against nature, crimes that would disgrace even a nation of savages; crimes of genocide. What manner of men were these; hiding behind white sheets and hoods, attempting the extermination of an entire race; while the Grand Master of the Caucasian Grand Lodge of Mississippi would record in the proceedings of that Masonic body, “can we be surprised that members get drunk and shed blood?”
