We all know what happened on October 29 th 2012, when Superstorm Sandy came ashore. We all have stories. Fire Island did its job as a barrier to the rest of Long Island and took a fair share of attention from the storm. Regardless, as coastal residents know, life moves on.

Shop Smart For Mother’s Day Come spring, shoppers often ask, “What gift should I get Mom for Mother’s Day?” How do people transform the sentiments they have for their mother into gifts that represent love and devotion?

• Avoid “Final Sale” items. It can be tempting to peruse the deep-discount rack at Mom’s favorite store when retailers cut prices on items in anticipation of a new season. But, these sales may come with restrictions on returns or exchanges.

• Do Some Sleuthing. Pay attention to conversations and see if there is anything Mom mentions wanting to try or something around the house that may need updating. Practical gifts are less likely to end up unopened in the basement or attic.

Restoring Facial Volume & Filling Wrinkles Naturally As we grow older, the layer of fat under our skin begins to thin. This volume loss, especially around the eyes and mouth, can give a tired and deflated look to the face, and is one of the earliest and most visible signs of aging. Injectable fillers can help correct this for short periods of time, but what if you want a permanent solution?

Autologous fat transfer (Fat Grafting) replaces this loss with an identical substance - excess fat stored somewhere on your body. Unwanted fatty deposits can now be put to good use, filling wrinkles and restoring facial volume without resorting to artificial fillers, meaning there is virtually no chance of an allergic reaction.

Sound too good to be true? It’s here, and it’s happening every day! Autologous fat injections are a readily available, relatively inexpensive - and completely natural - alternative for facial rejuvenation. Your own fat can be harvested from almost anywhere of the body (although abdomen, flanks and thighs are preferable), then injected into another area to achieve volume restoration and plumping.

How does autologous fat transfer compare to traditional fillers? Both methods involve applying a small amount of local anesthesia to the treatment area to minimize discomfort during the injection, will result in a minor amount of swelling and/or bruising, and will provide immediate results. The differences between the techniques, both in application and duration, are significant and worthy of discussion.

First and foremost, autologous fat transfer is all-natural because the filler comes from your own body. Transferred

fat is a living graft and, as such, it creates a blood supply much like a skin graft or hair transplant would. However, because it is meant to be a living transplant, a certain amount of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed by the body. This requires minor “over-filling,” which means a small amount of extra fat will be placed in order to allow for this reabsorption. The majority of this “loss” will occur in the first several weeks after the injection, with ideal results in approximately 4 to 6 weeks. As time goes by, the treated area will continue to remodel for approximately 6 months. The general consensus is that the fat remaining at six months will stay permanently. This is in stark contrast to traditional fillers which are completely re-absorbed by the body in as little as three months, or a year at most.

Some patients observe a small increase in size years after their procedure because, as the transferred cells become established, they may return to their natural function of storing fat.

Another difference between the two methods would be the relative cost. While autologous fat transfer may appear more costly on first glance, the long-lasting results mean the repeat visits necessary with traditional fillers are no longer required.

Additionally, the time for each procedure varies greatly as well. A traditional filler can usually be placed in less than an hour, while fat grafting may require up to 2 to 3 hours.

Transcendental Meditation Is Transporting Long Island Women By: Janet Hoffman

Let’s face it ladies: the statistics are grim. There’s a plague of stress in the United States. It’s in our schools, our workplaces and our homes. Studies show that one out of four visits by women to physicians involves a prescription for depression. Women today claim to be, on average, forty percent less happy than women forty years ago. There are now more women than men in the workforce, but we are more susceptible to stress at work. Heart disease, already the number one cause of fatality among women, is increasing.

The good news is that there is, easily within our reach, a deterrent and cure for this plague. Research scientists, physicians and celebrities galore are publicly endorsing a scientifically validated technique that reduces stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia and cardiovascular disease, while it increases intelligence, focus, energy, resilience and happiness.

Calcium and vitamin D are frequently touted for their ability to improve bone health. While consuming foods rich in vitamin D and calcium is especially important for aging women, both vitamin D and calcium also help to keep the body strong and vital at any age.

Calcium and vitamin D help fight bone loss, and not just in older women. Younger, active women need it to prevent stress fractures and other bone injuries. A 2008 study reviewed the health of 5,000 female U.S. Navy recruits, and those who did not take additional calcium and vitamin D were 25 percent more likely to suffer a stress fracture. A stress fracture is a small fracture of a bone caused by repeated physical strain.

Calcium is also needed for other parts of the body. The National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center says calcium is necessary for the heart, muscles and nerves to function properly. It also helps blood to clot. Furthermore, pregnant women need ample calcium in their diets in order to supply calcium to a growing fetus. If a pregnant woman does not get enough calcium through diet, the baby will draw it from Mom’s own bones, threatening the mother’s health while leading to bone fragility and increasing her risk of fractures.

Calcium and vitamin D work in conjunction. Although a balanced diet may provide enough calcium, many times high levels of salt and protein in one’s diet can increase calcium excretion through the kidneys. Also, people who have an intolerance to lactose may not be getting the calcium they need. Vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium.

Without vitamin D, a woman cannot produce enough calcitriol, impairing calcium absorption from her diet. In turn, the body will take calcium from stores in existing bone, weakening them and preventing the formation of strong, new bone.

Women who may have been deficient in vitamin D and calcium can develop osteoporosis and other bone-loss conditions as they age. Thanks to osteoporosis, half of all women over the age of 50 will have a fracture of the hip, wrist or vertebra during their lifetime, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. A drop in estrogen at the time of menopause can contribute to bone loss. Drinking large amounts of alcohol, maintaining a low body weight and smoking can each cause osteoporosis.

In order to maintain bone and body health, there are certain dietary intake recommendations regarding calcium and vitamin D. Adults under age 50 should consume between 1,000 and 1,300 milligrams of calcium and roughly 600 IU of vitamin D daily. Calcium can be found in dairy products as well as in salmon, shellfish, brazil nuts, dried beans and green, leafy vegetables. Vitamin D is found in fish, eggs and fortified milk. Vitamin D can also form when the body is exposed to sunlight. Even as few as 10 minutes of daily exposure to sunlight can produce vitamin D.

“Preventive Care is a Family Affair” No matter your age, proper dental care is all about prevention.

The American Dental Association recommends a dental cleaning and examination twice a year, beginning at age 3, to diagnose dental problems in their early stages and, preferably, prevent them in the first place.

A proper dental exam should not be limited to the teeth themselves. It is important for the dentist to perform an oral cancer exam by checking the tongue, cheeks, gums, palate and all soft tissues for any irregularities.

Certain irritants can increase the risk of oral cancer, including alcohol consumption, tobacco use (whether smoked, chewed or dipped), but the mouth has a high incidence of being a secondary cancer site (when cancer starts somewhere else and metastasizes to the

mouth) as well.

The preventive exam does not stop there. It is important to diagnose gum disease as early as possible to make treatment easier and less expensive.

Left unchecked, supporting bone can recede and teeth can potentially loosen and ultimately be lost.

And of course, digital dental x-rays (up to 90% less radioactive than film x-rays) should be taken at proper intervals to diagnose problems hidden under the gums, including decay, abscesses, cysts and impacted teeth.

The final piece of the prevention puzzle is a home-care program tailored to your special needs. Young children require a different home-care program than older

patients who, due to medications or specific medical problems, may produce inadequate saliva, and, thus are at higher risk of decay due to dry mouth.

As you can see, the key is to see your dentist on a regular basis for a full mouth check up (teeth and soft tissues).

The longer you wait, the worse problems become, so bring the entire family and prevent dental problems - or at least catch them early so the treatment is less extensive and less expensive.

Must Know:A New Buzz On An Old Tradition Removing Negative Energy With Sage Even though it may not be typical conversation amongst friends, more people than you know have heard about how sage can remove negative energy. And although it is a very old ritual, there has been a lot of buzz lately about removing negative energy, perhaps a sign of the times...

Beginning with our Native Americans, sage has been used for centuries to clear negative energy. Many people continue to practice today with the use of White Sage (or Smudge). Although it can be performed at any time, a favorite time of year for smudging is in the spring.

Before performing the

smudging, open all of your windows so that any negative energy that may have gotten “stuck” in your space over the winter months can go right out the windows. Always use caution when smudging.

First, light your sage stick (use White Sage if you can), then place the stick in a bowl (an abalone shell is very commonly used). Once the sage is smoking, start in one corner of your space, fanning the smoke upwards (I like to use a feather for this step), at the same time asking all the negative energy to leave your space, to be replaced with positive energy. Smudge all corners and doorways and windows. Always finish where you started to close

the circle. Once finished in one room, you can go throughout the entire house until all rooms have been smudged. This process gives you the opportunity to bring in positive energy with the renewal of Spring.

TIP: Spring brings yard sales and new treasures for us to bring home. It is always a good idea to smudge any treasures that you may pick up. I always like to do this before bringing my treasures into my home.

• Clean up. The most effective way to improve curb appeal is to clean up the property. Make sure all hedges are trimmed and remove weeds, sticks and other debris from any flower beds. Lay mulch in the flower beds and garden, as mulch prevents weed growth while helping the soil retain moisture, resulting in more attractive gardens to catch a buyer’s eye.

• Get an “edge” on other sellers. Edge driveways, sidewalks and other walkways around the property, removing or trimming anything that is hanging over the driveway or walkways. If the boundary between your driveway and lawn is not distinct, consider installing edging materials such as stone or bricks.

• Take to the trees. Many homeowners grow accustomed to overgrown trees around their property and may not notice that low-hanging, unsightly branches are hiding the home from view. Buyers want to see the house, so take to the trees and trim any branches that hang too low or obscure your home.

• Clean the gutters. Leaves and sticks hanging from the gutters are a red flag to buyers, who tend to associate clogged gutters with roof damage. Clean the gutters thoroughly before putting your home up for sale. If your property includes lots of trees, install guards to keep twigs and leaves out of the gutters.

• Make the home accessible through the front door. Many homeowners enter their home through a side door or through their garage. If you fall into this category, keep in mind that prospective buyers will be entering through the front door, so make this area accessible. Clear any clutter, such as overgrown hedges, away from the front door, and consider upgrading the door handle to a more modern feature.

• Make sure all plants, including flowers, are living.

Dehydrated or dead plants and flowers are eyesores, and they will give buyers the impression that you didn’t pay much attention to your property. Make sure all plants are alive and thriving and replace those that aren’t. You can replant new flowers or plants or just use potted plants instead.
