SEIGERMAN’S FURNITURE & INTERIOR DESIGN CENTER:
From Start to Furnished All Under One Roof Come visit their recently renovated, massive two-story showroom and design center in Farmingdale… it is over 40,000 square feet of gorgeous. For over 80 years, Seigerman’s has built a strong reputation for high quality merchandise and exceptional service. We visited the showroom and met with lead designer Ronelle Hills, who gave us a tour. “We have re-invented our showroom and have rebranded Seigerman’s for the millennium,” she said, “We offer our customers more than the typical furniture store.”
THE SHOWROOM It felt as if we were walking through pages of an upscale design magazine… Upon entering the showroom, it looks as if you are stepping into a home… there is a beautiful vignette of a living room, an office, a bedroom, a dining room, and a kitchen. Everything was so fabulously put together. “We purposely designed and arranged it that way,” stated Ronelle. And yes…everything in the showroom is for sale.
The rest of the showroom is also filled with inviting furniture settings and a huge variety of styles from leading manufacturers. Contemporary, coastal, country, modern farmhouse, transitional, industrial, and traditional – they do a remarkable job keeping up with the trends as well as offering the never-go-out-of-style classics. The diversity of their showroom is also evident in their price points, offering mid-range to high-end furniture. ‘Quality at affordable pricing’ is their motto. Nothing compares to being able to sit on
the sofas and chairs; to touch the various fabrics, textiles and finishes; to see how the vivid or soft color palette combinations interact. It entices customers to stay and browse because it allows them to imagine how things situated in the showroom may look in their home. Every piece of furniture is custom ordered and available in multiple fabrics, finishes and sizes. If a customer needs assistance with selecting and coordinating multiple items, the design center is conveniently located right upstairs.

THE DESIGN CENTER The full-service design center is staffed by professional interior designers. Customers frequently come in to purchase a piece of furniture, then, after browsing the showroom, decide to renovate an entire room. At the design center, customers can make an appointment with one of the designers to plan a renovation project, be it one room, or an entire home. No project, or budget, is too big or small. In addition to interior designers, their staff includes licensed and insured carpenters, plumbers, electricians, seamstresses, painters and more. “We work hand in hand with our clients on their project. We create floor plans and space lay-outs; we help select flooring, rugs and carpet, wallpaper, artwork, accessories, window treatments, color schemes, and paint plans; we can create custom wall units, kitchens, bars …really anything they can dream up,” said Ronelle. “We do it all…start to furnished.”
and they don’t time-stamp it. If you wish to purchase something at a later date, a personal file will be made and kept until you are ready to proceed.
OPEN TO THE TRADE Seigerman’s design center is also open to the trade, and they welcome customers that are working with their own designers. They encourage designers to utilize the showroom like it is their own; they want designers to feel comfortable working with Seigerman’s and their design staff. They also provide designers access to all of their suppliers and work with them to get the best pricing possible. With springtime upon us, we are already thinking about getting our outdoor spaces ready for the season. Seigerman’s offers several beautiful collections of outdoor furniture at various price points from a variety of manufacturers. Many customizing options are also available. Creating a stylish and relaxing outdoor space will provide an oasis for you and your family to enjoy right through the fall.
Visiting Seigerman’s is an experience. Whether you’re shopping for a special piece, or a whole new look, they’ve got it all under one very large roof!
As an added courtesy, the design center also offers a complimentary design consultation in their showroom, or at a customer’s home. Floor to ceiling, they cover every aspect of the renovation project,

I hope this issue provides both anticipation and inspiration for the warmer days ahead. Wishing you a wonderful new season!
House Plants
GREEN DÉCOR AND POWERFUL PURIFIERS By introducing certain plants into your home, you may start to notice improvements to your health and overall happiness. As well as improving your mood and enhancing a soothing living space, according to WebMD, researchers found that rooms with plants have less dust and mold than rooms without any foliage. Leaves and other parts of the plants act as natural filters to catch allergens and other airborne particles. That stated, it is best to avoid plants with pollen or spores. Houseplants also add moisture to the air, which is especially beneficial during the winter months. These are a few good ones to consider bringing into your home:
SPIDER PLANTS
They are great for removing formaldehyde from the air, which is emitted from many things you bring into your home. They are also good humidity boosters. They’re one of the easiest plants to care for and can be kept in almost any room since they don’t like direct sunlight.
LAVENDER
Best known for its stress-relieving mental benefits, catching a whiff of lavender may help soothe restlessness, anxiety, and insomnia. Placing a lavender plant in your bedroom may help you sleep better. Lavender plants prefer well-drained soil and lots of sunlight.

Clean air is released back into your room, enhanced with the scent of the botanical blends. Available at Healthy Alternatives, Babylon Village.
ENGLISH IVY
Excellent for purifying the air of airborne mold particles that can trigger allergies. It is another great plant to put in your bedroom because it can help you breathe easier and get a restful night’s sleep if you have difficulty breathing at night. The plant thrives under fluorescent light but not direct sun. *Be aware that English ivy is poisonous and should be kept well out of reach from children and pets.
SNAKE PLANT
Another popular choice for improving indoor air quality. It works the night shift, converting carbon dioxide into oxygen as you sleep. In addition to formaldehyde, snake plants target carbon monoxide and other toxic air impurities as well. Keep anywhere from 6 to 8 snake plants that are about waist-high for optimal air purification. Considered to be one of the easiest plants to care for, snake plants do great when placed under indirect sunlight.

DRAGON TREE
(Dracaena Marginata) - Removes trichloroethylene, formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene from your home’s air. Perfect for a beginner gardener, the dragon plant is slow growing, drought tolerant, and needs bright indirect light. *A word of warning: this natural air purifier is safe for humans but very toxic to dogs and cats.
BOSTON FERN
Said to be a natural humidifier, these are among the best air purifiers that combat formaldehyde, xylene and other unwanted toxins. Place this type of fern in any air-conditioned room of your home. It may also indirectly benefit any dry skin, which can often be a side effect of highly air-conditioned indoor spaces. Boston ferns are easy to grow and prefer indirect sunlight. As always, especially if you have allergy sufferers, it’s best to do further research on the type of plant you chooSe and how to care for it before bringing it into your home.

Books, Wisdom, & S and M
Annie started writing her column, Raging Gracefully, because she’s committed to the idea that regardless of how old one becomes, raging as opposed to simply aging, is the new paradigm for stalling Father Time. If we all get behind her ideology maybe Mother Nature will agree. We are counting on that.
BY A NN I E N I L A ND
We’d be better off if we stopped commenting on S and M. Every time it’s mentioned a growing demographic gets marginalized. Ouch! You guys are on to me and know that I wasn’t referring to sadomasochism. The “S and M” teaser stands for... wait for it…Senior Moments. It’s a casually tossed around phrase that throws shade on those of us of a certain age. And when we announce that we’re having a Senior Moment simply because we don’t have instant recall, it raises questions. Are we unwittingly complicit in endorsing ageism? Do we help spread the epidemic in American culture by buying into stereotypes about getting older? Can you help me find my glasses? Perhaps it’s time to change the narrative and remarket the expression, Senior Moments. Renaming it will change the association. Slow-Your-Roll Moments sounds like a plan. Hear me out… Imagine at birth each of us is given a newly built room filled with empty shelves. Every memory, experience, or new sensation gets bound in a book and placed on a shelf. We begin to build a library that catalogues every event in our lives. Every year our inventory grows. Very young children, who haven’t clocked enough time and experiences to build large libraries, have shiny new books on their shelves, but they’re small in numbers. We’ve witnessed their elephant-like memories and how effortlessly they recall details. Retrieving those books that stored them is a no-brainer. They’re easy to locate, and dust free….it hasn’t settled yet.
In middle age, there’s still plenty of room on the shelves for collecting wisdom. Scaling mountains of books that store long-term and short-term memories takes more time, but no one starts tapping their foot with impatience when there’s a delay in recall. Except for our grown kids, who are quick to cover their thinly veiled irritation when we repeatedly ask for help with technology. But they suck it up and do the math. Free child care? Priceless….
As young adults with expanding frames of reference, we boast
By the time our grandkids are old enough to move in with other people’s grandkids, we’ll be the stewards of massive libraries with stunning collections of knowledge. Tomorrow’s memories, made today, will cover every inch of

our once empty rooms. Shelves will groan with the weight of life experience….knees and backs will follow suit. Will we rise to the occasion and work out our kinks in the gym? Hell yeah! So, we need to remember, even while forgetting, that Senior Moments can be perceived as dignified Slow-Your-Roll Moments when viewed that way. We need to allow ourselves time to cull through all the information, memories, and wisdom we accrued while we were reeling in the years and stowing away the time. Let the young spit out instant responses while we roll ours out slowly. Wisdom needs time to percolate…like good coffee. And, if we find humor in the joke Mother Nature plays on us when our lost rose-colored glasses are usually found on our heads, we just might see aging in a new light…hilarious. There’s a silver lining to growing older….we’ve learned to laugh when it hurts. Take two Advils, and call me in the morning. By adding a little sunshine to our gray…old can be gold. I see your true colors shining through…

There is still plenty of time to get in shape before bathing suit season is upon us. We asked Corinne Brown, owner of Fitness Incentive in Babylon Village, for some expert advice to help shed winter-weight and get beach-body ready for the summer.
HERE ARE HER 12 TIPS FOR SUCCESS: 1. The Right Attitude One of the few things you have control over in life is your attitude! Strive to have positive, realistic goals as a way of life. You can do anything with the right attitude.
2. Consistency Consistency is the key to success. Even on the days when you don’t feel your best, get your workout in anyway! Once you’re up and moving, you’ll feel better. Approach all that you do with the attitude that you’ll give it your best.
3. Get Enough Protein Muscles need protein, so be sure to consume plenty of high-quality protein from sources such as lean meats, fish, chicken, eggs, and avocados.
4. Include Good Sources of Carbohydrates Many have the impression that carbs are “bad.” This is not true for all carbs! The “bad” carbs are mostly found in processed foods that are loaded with sugar - avoid these. However, “good” carbs are absolutely essential, providing the energy your mind and body need to function at their best. Good carbs include foods like roasted, grilled, or steamed vegetables and garden salads. Be mindful of what type of, and how much, dressing you use – avoid those with added sugar.
5. Balance Work, Stretching, and Mediation I always tell my students, “A balanced body is an injury-free body!” Your core is at the center of it all – it’s vital to keep it strong. Work your abdominals several times a week. I recommend planks – they’re simple and effective. Keep in mind that to achieve a truly powerful core, you must have a strong upper and lower body. Equally important is making time to stretch your hard working
8
THE LIST MAGAZINE 917.559.7821
muscles and relax your hard working mind. Your body does so much for you; it only takes a few minutes every day to show it some love with a few well-deserved stretches and quiet meditation time.
6. Lift Build muscle! Working with weights is crucial for strength and bone density. You don’t need to lift very heavy weights – you can use lighter weights and still achieve a strong body. Additionally, muscle tissue is metabolically more active and burns more calories than fat tissue. The more muscles you have, the more calories you burn while doing nothing.
7. Get Your Heart Pumping Good choices for cardio include: sprinting, cycling, stair climbing, fitness classes, and vigorous walking – do all of them, some of them, or mix them up. Moving is essential! Confession: cardio work is, and always will be, my favorite workout. I recommend cycling if you aren’t able to run or walk.
8. Go Easy on the Alcohol & Sugar I will never say, “Do not drink.” Just keep it moderated. I frequently enjoy a glass (glass, not bottle) of good red wine at dinner. Regularly indulging in an entire bottle of wine, or several mixed drinks (usually loaded with sugar) can certainly contribute to not being able to lose that abdominal fat. It’s also critical to eliminate as much sugar from your diet as possible. Read labels – you’ll be shocked to learn how much sugar is added to processed foods!
9. Meal Prep in Advance Eating right often requires a lot of prep time. I find the best approach here is to make enough food for a few days. This allows you to have a healthy lunch and dinner readily available so you’ll always know what you’re eating.
FITLIST
10. Get Adequate Sleep You will not be optimizing your workouts if you are sleep deprived. The amount of sleep needed varies from person to person, but adequate sleep is defined as 6 – 8 hours per night regularly. It’s important to understand what your body requires and to make sure you get enough. Never pass up the opportunity for a quick midafternoon power nap if you can squeeze one in – even 20 minutes can be beneficial.
11. Hydrate Water is essential to good health, yet needs vary by individual. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, adequate daily fluid intake for men is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters); and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) for women. This recommendation includes fluids from water, other beverages, and food (about 20% of daily fluid intake usually comes from food). If you do any activity that makes you sweat, you need to drink extra water to replace lost fluids. It's important to drink water before, during, and after a workout. I drink electrolyte enriched water to replenish myself after vigorous workouts. (Essentia and Core waters are good choices.)
12. Train with a Buddy Most individuals do best when they are accountable to another. Working out with a friend can really help keep you on track. Whether you meet at the gym, or to walk, run, or cycle, develop consistent meeting times so it becomes a true routine, something you find yourself looking forward to. When I’m not teaching classes, I love to walk with my friends. We are loyal to each other and our conversations make the time pass quickly.
Good health and sustainability isn't a goal, it's a way of living."

TWICE AS NICE INTERIORS
BEAUTY AND FUNCTION:
A Redesigned Kitchen Mary Middlemiss and Nancy LaCalamita, sisters and owners of Twice as Nice Interiors, shared before-and-after details of a recent kitchen renovation. Our first step in this project was to figure out how this family of 5 was going to function better. Assessing a kitchen that had no counter space for the family to sit at was a problem; and sitting at the round table, which was pushed up against the back entrance door, was another issue in itself. We decided to knock down the wall between the kitchen and dining room because they were not utilizing the dining room often. This would allow us to expand the kitchen and create a large island for the family to gather at.

Once we confirmed the space, we began the design process board. Here, we finalized the kitchen layout: how it was going to function, the color scheme, and the materials. Our concept was chic farmhouse, which is just a touch more polished than the typical farmhouse look. The cabinetry is smooth shaker door in a custom color topped with a taupe quartz. We used a soft neutral pallet of taupe and flax and added pop with touches of copper, reclaimed wood, and multiple textures.
Our biggest challenge was re-configuring the powder room, pantry and laundry room. We were able to steal some space from the garage, so now the family has a mud room, home office, pantry, and gorgeous powder room as seen in the photos.
As part of their green initiative, Twice as Nice Interiors now offers a “Home Wellness Consultation.” It’s a fantastic new service created to educate people about eco-friendly and sustainable brands and products that are best for maintaining a cleaner, healthier home environment. They also discuss valuable holistic habits and many other homehealthy tips that can help improve physical and mental health.

Modern Farmhouse Goes Coastal
7 WAYS TO GIVE YOUR FARMHOUSE DECOR A MODERN TWIST ADD MODERN LIGHT FIXTURES A traditional farmhouse-style kitchen feels completely different with the addition of two contemporary pendants.
“Modern Coastal” or “Coastal Farmhouse” is the current catchphrase when talking home design. This design style is all about classic elements that are inspired by both the traditional farmhouse and coastal style.
MAKE AN ACCENT WALL Use wallpaper to create an accent wall in your home. Bedrooms are perfect for this, as you can quickly enhance your space by dressing up the wall behind your bed.
“It is a modern twist on both that moves towards a more contemporary, minimalist aesthetic,” says Ted Orlando from Zimmerman's Home, “Lines are clean and straight; color is minimal or muted, creating an understated industrial vibe.”
PAINT INTERIOR DOORS Brings a modern vibe to your space.
Some of the main elements you often see reflected in this style are things like subway tile, painted wall paneling, stone (marble or quartz) counters, and exposed wood beams. Organic or natural accents are also popular design staples that can evoke both a farmhouse and beachy vibe – think reclaimed wood and natural fibers for curtains and rugs. Fabric palettes are light; off-white, ivory and creams, pale, faded blues and beige all work beautifully to blend a coastal and farmhouse look. This style is all about “family-friendly” fabrics, which means they best be high-performance to handle the wear and tear of today’s family. High-performance fabrics can be cleaned simply and safely with just soap and water. Yes, even white. That’s the benefit of highperformance fabric in a high-performance home.
UPDATE ARTWORK Consider black and white photography for subtle drama; or graphic abstracts for color and texture. OPT FOR SPLASHES OF COLOR A teal front door adds a completely different spin to the front porch of your traditional home. INSTALL OPEN SHELVING Using rustic wood for your shelves will modernize your space while maintaining the farmhouse style. TUBS ARE BACK, especially free-standing ones. HOME & GARDEN
Hardscaping Hardscaping is the trend transforming yards into outdoor oases. Patios, paths, outdoor dining and kitchen areas, fire pits, walkways, stairs, and even water features are popular design elements found in many backyards today. Homeowners are choosing elements that offer “multiseason functionality” and can survive a range of temperatures. “We are incorporating fire features, heat lamps, and protective structures,” states Phil Terribile, owner of Terri Associates Landscape, “People want to extend and enjoy outdoor living way beyond summertime.” As a bonus, adding a hardscape design to your yard using natural materials will not only expand your living space, it’s likely to increase your property value as well. In addition, hardscaping aligns with the current ecofriendly shift toward low-maintenance, low-water planting and environmentally friendly landscape design. Xeriscaping, or low-water landscaping, engages a mix of hardscape and drought-resistant softscape that features plantings native to the area.

Edible gardens are also all the rage right now. Homeowners are planting gardens that produce favorite fruits, vegetables and herbs for farm-to-table dining. As an alternative, container gardens are an excellent option for both blossoms and edibles in smaller spaces. Lastly, one-click remote irrigation systems are gaining popularity. These systems deliver just the right amount of water to a landscape and can save owners money in the long run. These irrigation systems can be controlled from anywhere with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and smartphone apps allowing easy control for homeowners to shut the system and let Mother Nature get the job done if the weather is wet and rainy.

FLOORING
WHAT’S TRENDING IN FLOORING… We asked flooring specialist, Eugene Coizza, who recently opened his second store, Argyle Flooring, to share with us what people are loving in flooring right now… Waterproof vinyl plank flooring is very hot. It has a realistic representation of hardwood flooring and is easier to maintain. It’s economical and water resistant and can be installed in any room of the house. Waterproof luxury vinyl comes in planks or tile, and its ease of installation allows it to lay over most existing floors. Most jobs can be done in one day. Marble-look porcelain tile is also very popular. Porcelain tile is always popular, but marble-look porcelain tile is really trending right now. They look extremely realistic, and are a fraction of the price. Well known for water resistance, they can be installed anywhere in your home. Wood-look porcelain tile is also in style. It is becoming a regular feature in many Farmhouse design styled homes. The

OPENS NEW LOCATION IN BAY SHORE Daniel Duggan of Duggan Dental Group, who has practiced in Bay Shore for many years, merged his practice with ProHEALTH Dental in December 2019 to better serve his patients. ProHealth’s coordinated medical/dental care offers expanded services, such as addressing the needs of patients with sleep apnea. “This partnership with ProHEALTH Dental allows us opportunities to grow while still offering the personalized quality of care our patients have come to expect from our staff,” said Dr. Duggan. Most major dental plans are accepted at ProHEALTH Dental offices. For patients without dental insurance, a VIP Program is available which allows patients to pay a fixed nominal fee for all preventative care and receive a 25% discount off regular fees. ProHEALTH Dental focuses on the importance of good oral health as part of overall patient wellness. “We believe that this is the model

of the future,” ProHEALTH Dental CEO Norton Travis said in a written statement. “It’s time to break down the historical barrier between medicine and dentistry and have these important healthcare professionals work together to improve the oral and overall health of their patients.” Based in Lake Success, NY, ProHEALTH Dental partners with health systems and medical groups to coordinate dental services with primary care medical services. Under these partnership arrangements, ProHEALTH Dental develops state-of-the-art dental offices to provide both preventative and restorative dentistry, as well as all needed specialty services, for both children and adults. ALLERGY RELIEF
Allergy Relief without Medication Allergy season is upon us again. This year we experienced spring “flirting” with winter. That means many spring flowers surfaced prematurely and were in full bloom a little early. The same can be said about weeds and grasses. As early as February, many patients had come into the center with sinus congestion, runny noses and wheezing. Attention allergy sufferers: NAET may be the answer you are looking for. NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique) is a medication-free, allergy relief technique which incorporates the medical disciplines of chiropractic, acupuncture, biochemistry and kinesiology testing. I call it “Acupuncture-Fusion”. Needles are not even essential to the treatment protocol. We can use an acupressure devise or a cold-laser light to stimulate the acupuncture points for the “needle-shy” patient. The NAET protocol was created in 1983 and there are well over 16,000 practitioners worldwide. Simply stated, the NAET protocol resets the nervous system to accept the allergen without medication. There is no use of medications, inhalers or anti-histamines in the treatment protocol. A regular user of such drugs will be weaned off the drug protocol gracefully, and more importantly,
in a safe and timely manner. An allergy can be expressed in many more ways than most people expect. Any system in the body can be affected by an allergen. The respiratory system may react with shortness of breath, wheezing, sinus congestion, sneezing and spontaneous sweating. The cardiovascular system may respond with a rapid heartbeat, atrial fibrillation and chest tightness. The integumentary system (skin, hair, and nails) often exhibits either a rash in patches or throughout the body; or open skin sores, which can be an extreme eczema condition or dry, itchy skin. The entire body system can shut down from an extreme sensitivity to an allergen, as in an anaphylaxis shock, which would require an immediate treatment, usually with an epi-pen injecting the body with epinephrine. It is possible to be allergic to almost
MUST KNOW
BY ANTHONY CERABINO B.M.,LMT,M.S.,L.AC anything, not just the usual suspects such as wheat, peanuts, animal dander, pollen and molds. Some common examples of allergens are salt, sugar, caffeine, spice, alcohol, food coloring/additives, cotton, paper, artificial sweeteners, cleaning agents, gold, silver, petroleum products and the list goes on. When least expected, an allergen could be the cause of your health problems. Other common pathologies, such as autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia syndrome, depression, systemic inflammation, frequent common colds, psoriasis, irregular menstrual cycles, and many other illnesses may be allergy related. Hundreds of NAET videos can be viewed on YouTube to gain a better understanding of this powerful, safe, clean and simple protocol. A very thorough and meticulous health history is paramount to getting results with NAET. I firmly believe proper care requires proper time spent with the patient. That should be the case when visiting any healthcare practitioner. May you enjoy all this beautiful spring has to offer…including the flowers!

While nuggets are baking, make Bang Bang sauce: add all ingredients to medium bowl and mix well until blended. Serve alongside nuggets for dipping.

A Well-Trained Dog = A Happy Dog + A Happy Home
Millie D. Yorkie, PHD
Our advice offering, wet nosed resident expert on human behavior.
GROUP CLASSES FORMING
Dear Dr. Mil, My humans constantly brush my coat to remove any hairs that are threatening to jump ship. Worse yet, they search for more on the floors of the house, sweep it into a thing called a dustpan and then squirrel it away. What’s up Doc? Hairy Dear Hairy, Have you met Sally? The behavior you described is pretty universal among humans especially if they’re young. Next Sunday watch them closely in the morning. They’ll be moving slow and growling under their breath. One of them might even roll over and play dead. Push past the smell of regret and take note of what they’re drinking. They call it “Hair of the Dog”. Dr. Mil #daysofwineandnoses
