It’s Good to Be Back! - Reed’s Family Butchers Reed’s Family Butchers opened in August 2012 taking over from the already well known N.D Fuller premises in Corringham next to Iceland. Will, previously of Prime Cut butchers (Stanford-Le-Hope) and the Village Butchers (Horndon-on-the Hill) has spent the last year working in London’s Smithfield meat market but found he was missing the customer interaction. He said “We were looking to set up a butchers shop in the local area when we found the Fullers shop up for sale. As the shop had been trading as a butchers for over 40 years, we believed this would give us a great foundation to establish and grow our own business’. Will, who is working alongside his father Bill, said ‘It has made me proud to see how many customers have come to see us in our new premises and how many people are staying loyal to the shop. “It is good to be back” working within the local community. It really is a family business. Mum (Linda), Dad and I have thrown ourselves whole heartedly into the shop and even my sister Catherine comes to help in her spare time!’
sourced both locally and also from the world renowned London’s Smithfield Meat Market. Bill said ‘It is great to hear the compliments from customers, old and new, regarding the variety and freshness of meat on offer. The variation and quality of meat coupled with the competitive pricing, optional home delivery service, hog roast hire and friendly atmosphere make it difficult to find a reason not to visit’. If you want to forward order or require home delivery phone the shop direct on 01375 673295 Alternatively email your request to reedsfamilybutchers@hotmail.co.uk. Orders can be placed by phone or email.
Keith and Ben have both stayed on at the shop and are working with Will, Bill and Linda to provide their customers with fresh meat and excellent service. The shop has been transformed into a Traditional Family Butchers where the cooked meats, including ham, beef, pork and turkey are cooked in house, with sausages, pies and sausage rolls also made on site. Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? A
cres Way Kennels has been caring for dogs over 20 years. They take in strays for both Southend and Rochford councils, and from members of the public. If you’ve found a stray dog in Southend or the surrounding areas, you should, in the first instance, contact Southend Council on 01702 215836. If you found the dog in Basildon, you should contact Basildon Council on 01268 533333 Sometimes, due to no fault of their own, people find they need to rehome their dogs. Acres Way are sometimes able to take these dogs into their kennels, and find new homes for them. They are visited by a large number of people each week looking to adopt a dog, and are often able to match dogs to new owners within a short period of time. This is far less stressful on the dog in the long run. Their ability to take in dogs for rehoming is dependent on the number of kennels they have available at the time - space is limited, and they are required to keep a number of kennels free for any strays that may be found by the council. That said, they will always endeavour to do their best to help you, should you find yourself in this difficult situation. Please note, that due to limited kennel space and resources, a fee is charged for this service. If you feel you may need to rehome your dog, please call the kennels on 01268 770402 between 10am and 3pm and ask to speak to Tom. Adopting a Dog If you think you might be able to offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they
10
recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. It may also benefit you to bring a lead and collar, but if you do not have one, they do have a number available for sale at the kennels. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you! Re-Homing Update Brilliant news – Sebastian, the 4 to 5 year old Jack Russell Terrier that we featured in our last edition has now been successfully re-homed with a new loving family. Sebastian was collected by the dog warden as he was found wandering the streets. He was underweight and in need of a good wash. Sebastian was at Acres Way for a number of months and we’re thrilled that he has finally been placed with a great family. We hope he enjoys his new life! Toby – the 3 to 4 year old male Lurcher we also featured last time is also about to be re-homed as well. Subject to a successful home inspection, a great family has agreed to take Toby as their family pet. So great news all round!

Jess - American Bull Female / Age 1
Jess is an un-neutered female of about 1 year old. She is very friendly and very playful. We would recommend that she would go into an only dog family, although she is friendly with most dogs, and not with very small children as she is very strong.

Top Ten Ways to Save Energy Wasted energy costs you money, and can damage the environment. You can do something about it with these simple tips: 1. Keep out the chill. Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping and draughts coming in. 2. Replace your inefficient fridge-freezer with an ‘A’ rated model and save up to £45 a year. 3. As tempting as it is, don’t dry your clothes on the radiator. It makes your boiler work harder than it needs to and costs you more. 4. Low energy light bulbs last up to 15 times longer and cost about 75% less to run than ‘conventional’ bulbs. 5. Insulate your loft with at least 270mm of fibreglass or similar insulation.
16
6. When boiling vegetables use just enough water to keep them covered. 7. Turn it off. Don’t leave televisions, DVD recorders or computers on standby. 8. Use a jug kettle with a water level gauge so you only boil what you need. 9. Turn it down. Nudge your central heating thermostat down just 1 degree and you save 10% on your fuel bills. 10. Keep your cylinder cosy. If you have an old lagging jacket fit a new 80mm one. It will pay for itself in months.
