THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY

The Rayleigh, Rochford & Castle Point Talking Newspaper for the Blind T

his Talking Newspaper (Charity no. 278578) started over 30 years ago with help from Rayleigh Lions, who also provided the funds for the initial purchase of equipment. We know that it’s relatively easy for those with sight problems to access national and international news simply by switching on the TV or radio. But it’s not always so easy to find out about local news and events. That’s where we come in – we make audio recordings for those people who live in our areas and who may be blind or partially sighted. Our recordings are now produced on USB memory sticks. We can supply special players for listeners who do not have their own. Each month, our listeners receive two local news editions and one magazine edition. Those who live in the Rochford area also receive a copy of Rochford District Matters every quarter. These recordings arrive in ‘Articles for the Blind’ yellow wallets. The wallets have return address

8

labels and, once the listener has finished with the memory stick, it can be returned to us in the wallet. We have our own rented studio at St Luke’s Place, Rochford and it is here that our volunteers make the recordings. It is a FREE service. Increasing public awareness is vital to us and we advertise our existence whenever and wherever we can.

If you know someone who would like to receive our service or if you simply want some more information, please call: Janet Berry: Chairman/Treasurer Ann Willis: Secretary

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? A

cres Way Kennels has been caring for dogs over 20 years. They look after both boarders and strays and provide a high level of attention to every dog under their roof. They take in strays for both Southend and Rochford councils and from members of the public.

endeavour to do their best to help you, should you find yourself in this difficult situation. Please note, that due to limited kennel space and resources, a fee is charged for this service. If you feel you may need to rehome your dog, please call the kennels on 01268 770402 between 10am and 3pm and ask to speak to Tom.

To accomodate the rising number of strays, Acres Way have recently rebuilt their kennels to hold 50 boarders and strays where every dog has access to a covered outdoor run.

Adopting a Dog

If you’ve found a stray dog in Southend or the surrounding areas, you should, in the first instance, contact Southend Council on 01702 215836. If you found the dog in Basildon, you should contact Basildon Council on 01268 533333 Sometimes, due to no fault of their own, people find they need to rehome their dogs. Acres Way are sometimes able to take these dogs into their kennels, and find new homes for them. They are visited by a large number of people each week looking to adopt a dog, and are often able to match dogs to new owners within a short period of time. This is far less stressful on the dog in the long run. Their ability to take in dogs for rehoming is dependent on the number of kennels they have available at the time - space is limited, and they are required to keep a number of kennels free for any strays that may be found by the council. That said, they will always

12

If you think you might be able to offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. It may also benefit you to bring a lead and collar, but if you do not have one, they do have a number available for sale at the kennels. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you!

Female / Age 1

Jess is an un-neutered female of about 1 year old. She is very friendly and very playful. We would recommend that she would go into an only dog family, although she is friendly with most dogs, and not with very small children as she is very strong.

History of Castle Point The district of Castle Point was formed in 1974 following the merger of the Benfleet Urban District and the Canvey Island Urban District. The name contains references to the principal landmarks of the two areas: Hadleigh Castle and Canvey Point. The area comprises of four main districts: Canvey Island, Hadleigh, South Benfleet and Thundersley. Canvey Island Canvey Island was originally made up of five separate islands. The name dates back to the AngloSaxons and means “The Island of Cana’s People.” Archaeological evidence suggests that the Island was inhabited as early as 2,000 years ago in the late Iron Age but until the early 20th century when it became a popular seaside resort, it consisted mainly of agricultural land and offshore pasture for sheep. It was also a site for salt harvesting, cultivation of shellfish and fishing and cereal production from Roman to mediaeval times. In 1622, Canvey’s landowners instigated a project to reclaim the land and wall the island from the

Thames. The scheme was financed by Joas Croppenburg, a Dutch Haberdasher of Cheapside in London. Cornelius Vermuyden, a Dutch Engineer and relative of Croppenburg was called in to oversee the project and about 300 workmen skilled in the construction of dykes and other sea defences were brought over from Holland. It was agreed that in return for their work they would be given a third of the land. The engineers successfully reclaimed 3,600 acres by walling the island with local chalk, limestone and the heavy clay of the marshes. Two round Dutch cottages remain on the Island from this time. The first, on Haven Road dated 1621 is a private residence and the second, on Canvey Road (below) dated 1618 is now a museum. Benfleet The name “Benfleet” originates from the 5th Century when the Saxons settled in the area which was then largely marshland. They named the area Beamfleote which literally meant “tree stream”as it was the area where the creeks from the River Thames adjoined the wooded area to the north. There have been several other spellings have been recorded over time including Benfleota, Bienflet, Bemflet, Bamflet, Baunflet and Bewinflete. The current spelling was adopted at the time the railway service was brought to the area and a railway station built for the town. One of the great historical events to take place in the area was The Battle of Benfleet between the Vikings and Saxons in 894.

22

to advertise in the next issue of The Local Business Guide call: 01375 402 546

The Thames and other waterways made the area vulnerable to Viking attacks and Benfleet was used as a Viking base. However the Vikings were defeated in the battle by the army of King Alfred under the command of his son Edward the Elder and his son-in-law Earl Aethelred of Mercia. Subsequently a church was built by the Saxons in thanksgiving for the victory over the Vikings. St Mary’s church now occupies the same site. Hadleigh Hadleigh has been occupied since approximately 500BC. “Hadleigh” is derived from a Saxon word meaning “a clearing in the heath.” Hadleigh is best known for its castle and the country park that surrounds it. Hadleigh Castle was first built by Hubert de Burgh, the 1st Earl of Kent, who was a key supporter of King John. The exact date of construction is uncertain, but it is believed the work was conducted around about 1230AD. Although De Burgh spent great sums of money building the castle, he was unable to enjoy it for very long. In 1215. King John had given the area of land known as the manor of Hadleigh to Hubert De Burgh along with many other gifts. Hubert built a large turreted castle as a statement of his power but following quarrels with the king he was forced to return all his lands, including Hadleigh in 1239. The castle remained in royal hands, but it was not until the time of Edward II, nearly 100 years later, that the king began to use the castle as a royal residence. Edward III saw the strategic importance of Hadleigh Castle as it was ideally situated as a base for defending the Thames estuary against French raids during the Hundred Years War. Edward’s claim to the French throne had led to war with France and he needed a suitable defence of the Thames estuary. This led the king to refurbishing and extending Hadleigh Castle. Edward III’s successors however, took little interest in the castle as a

residence and it was leased to a succession of tenants before being sold to Lord Riche in 1551, who sold it off as building materials. Thundersley Thundersley was at one time a place of great local importance, as being densely wooded, it was one of the hunting grounds of royalty. Like Benfleet and Hadleigh, the name of Thundersley is Saxon, for it is believed that at, or near, the place where the church now stands there was a grove for the worship of the god Thunor or Thor. Hence the name ‘Thorleg’, meaning the clearing dedicated to the god Thor. Daws Heath Daws Heath was named after Philip Dawe who held land there in the late 13th century. This was a patch of heath and scrub entirely encircled by woods. The area was a thriving woodland industry and the wood charcoal produced was noted for its quality and was used in the manufacture of gunpowder. During the 19th century, Daws Heath was notorious as the haunt of smugglers and thieves. It was a remote and forbidding place and its proximity to Hadleigh, Leigh-on-Sea and Canvey Creek made it a good landing spot for smugglers.

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY

Money Guidance

here are two stories that have appeared widely in the media lately that you will continue to read and hear about. The first is that of ‘Workplace Pensions’ , the second is of changes to retail financial services legislation that will mean fees will replace commission as the method of payment for financial advice. There already seem to be misunderstandings about these, and much of what I have seen in the media is incorrect or misleading. It is true that Workplace Pensions that operate via ‘auto enrolment’ went live this month, however the Government are phasing in their introduction over a period of six years, starting with the very largest employers. For smaller employers the final phasing in date with contributions at the full level is not until October 2018, however many employers may choose to offer it ahead of the deadlines. Employees will be Automatically enrolled once the employer scheme goes live and will usually have their contributions matched by the employer, up to 4% of salary once the phasing in is complete. Whilst there are numerous points of detail to consider for both staff and employers, it is important that you are aware of your ‘staging dates’ to make employers comply with the new legislation. Should you not wish to join the scheme you will have to notify your scheme administrator in writing, and every three years your employer will re- enrol you for which you would have to opt out again if you did not wish to join. We believe the new Auto enrolment pensions will dramatically change the face of the Personal Pension market and offer opportunities to save for retirement that should not be ignored. At Joseph Lamb we have created a new business unit that will be assisting employers in the setting up and management of auto enrolment schemes, we have already provided well received seminars on the subject and can provide an e mail ‘news’ service and fact sheets that will keep you up to date with your specific responsibilities if you are an employer. Please email us at workplacepensions@josephlamb.co.uk to subscribe to the service.

I now turn to the changes within the rules that control how financial advisers operate. The new rules come into effect no later than January 1st next year and have four main objectives.

1 To improve the quality of advice by increasing the minimum qualification requirements for all advisers;

2 To finally remove product and provider bias by banning commission and replacing it with ‘adviser charging’ 3 To re-define the term ‘Independent Advice’ 4 To improve the financial stability of adviser firms by forcing them to have more capital in their business (not now effective until Jan 2015) We think these changes will radically alter the current advice market place. Already most High Street banks have announced they are pulling out of selling investment products, and many experienced Independent Financial Advisers cannot meet the new requirements and may well close their businesses or merge with larger firms. We are delighted to announce that we have already launched our new business model that meets the new regulations. We have revamped our fee structure to meet the new competitive challenge of the review, and despite what the media say, in the majority of cases you will NOT need to pay just to walk through our door. Our first consultation will continue to be free, and normally our charges, which incidentally in most cases will be lower than before, can still be met by any products you buy, but on terms agreed by you, not set by a product provider. If you want to know more about the’ Retail Distribution Review’ please go to our website, if your existing adviser is leaving the industry we would love to welcome you as a new client. Martin Lamb, Managing Director of Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisers Ltd. History of St Mary’s Church If you have walked past St Mary’s Church a thousand times and never given a thought to its history, you may be surprised to know that people have been worshipping on or near the site for around 1,100 years.

western tower was then added in the 1300s. Further changes were made in the 1400s which included the beautiful timber south porch. In 1706 the existing timber framed porch was taken down and replaced by the present spirelet. Between 1890 and 1949, Sir Charles Archibald Nicholson became involved in St Mary’s as its architect. He was one of the greatest church architects of his period and was also responsible for seven cathedrals. The church is adorned with a host of tasteful fittings and furnishings designed by him including the pulpit, font cover and the organ loft. Stained Glass Windows

Saxons Christianity in Benfleet can be traced back to the 600s when it is believed to have been brought to the area by a missionary to the East Saxons - St Cedd. Later, in around 893-894AD, it is believed that a Saxon church was built on the current site of St Mary’s to give thanks to God for the victory of King Alfred the Great’s army against the Vikings at the Battle of Benfleet. It is possible that some ancient foundations uncovered in the churchyard may have formed part of this or an even earlier building. Normans It was probably about 1067 when a small Norman church was built, the west wall of which still remains as part of the present Nave. This church was then heightened and extended in the 1100s and the 36

A host of characters from the Bible and the history of Christianity look out at us from the stained glass in the windows. Much of the stained glass is from the 20th Century and was designed by the brother of Sir Charles Nicholson - Mr A.K Nicholson. The windows are well worth taking the time to examine. Churchyard In the large tree shaped churchyard are a few box like chest-tombs and several eighteenth century headstones. Rising out of the attractive churchyard are the rugged walls of South Benfleet’s ancient church. Even in these present times, changes are still being made to the church to enhance the building for local residents. Each year more snowdrop, crocus and daffodil bulbs are planted around the churchyard, painting a spectacular picture in the Spring.

Top Money Saving Tips Stop buying big brands! Most shops own brand items are made by the same people, just packaged differently and priced better. So why pay for the privilege of eating well known branded foods when an own brand tastes the same!

Watch the pennies! If you keep a record of every single penny you spend for at least one month; you’ll learn a lot and then later save the money you realized you wasted!

Haggling! You’d be surprised at the number of places you can haggle prices. From furniture stores to car dealerships to your local electrical store, by being friendly and just by asking you can get the price down on almost anything. If you don’t ask – you don’t get!

Switch off the plugs! A standard CRT television set still uses 2 watts of power on standby, with LCD and plasma screens using even more. According to the Energy Saving Trust, switching stuff off instead of leaving it on standby saves the average household at least £37 a year; it’s also helping out the environment!

Shop at cheaper places! Instead of buying higher priced products in premium supermarkets, make a visit to the less fashionable supermarkets. Your shopping experience might be a little lacklustre but it’ll be worth it when you see how much less you’re paying at the checkout. Stay organized! Computers are used by companies to save money. If you have a computer or laptop at home, use it in the same way. Use a spreadsheet to help with your budgeting. Keep your bank balance on it this will help you to stay organized and you can also use it so that you do not forget important dates. Interest! There is no such thing as 0% interest. When you see that advertised, it simply means that the cost of the interest is in the purchase price. If you are in a position to pay cash, then ask for this money back. The salesman may give you some trouble, but ask to speak to the manager, who may well cut the price to you for cash.

42

Walk! One of the biggest money saving tips: walk don’t drive. If you need to get a paper at the shops, go on foot. It might not be practical if you’re off to do the weekly shop but by not driving your helping the environment by cutting carbon emissions, saving money and losing weight by walking everywhere! Layers in the winter! When it gets cold put on an extra layer instead of turning up the thermostat. There’s no point having the house heated and wasting money on electricity bills when putting on a cosy knitted sweater will do the job just as well! Online comparison sites! It might be annoying and feel like a waste of time, but checking the price of your household services, credit cards and loans with comparison sites like moneysupermarket.com could save you a lot of money; just take some time out to get organised!

Top Ten Ways to Save Energy Wasted energy costs you money, and can damage the environment. You can do something about it with these simple tips: 1. Keep out the chill. Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping and draughts coming in. 2. Replace your inefficient fridge-freezer with an ‘A’ rated model and save up to £45 a year. 3. As tempting as it is, don’t dry your clothes on the radiator. It makes your boiler work harder than it needs to and costs you more. 4. Low energy light bulbs last up to 15 times longer and cost about 75% less to run than ‘conventional’ bulbs. 5. Insulate your loft with at least 270mm of fibreglass or similar insulation.

52

6. When boiling vegetables use just enough water to keep them covered. 7. Turn it off. Don’t leave televisions, DVD recorders or computers on standby. 8. Use a jug kettle with a water level gauge so you only boil what you need. 9. Turn it down. Nudge your central heating thermostat down just 1 degree and you save 10% on your fuel bills. 10. Keep your cylinder cosy. If you have an old lagging jacket fit a new 80mm one. It will pay for itself in months.

Local Photographer Niki Cornish Exhibits at the Beecroft Art Gallery N

iki Cornish, a contemporary photographer has been passionately preparing for her upcoming photographic exhibition. After spending six months searching for the right person in the perfect surroundings and frame, she has finally put together her new collection. The daughter of a soldier, Niki spent much of her childhood moving from army base to army base. Not settling into any school, she was eventually educated in Hampshire, whilst her parents relocated to Africa. This way of life gave Niki great independence and the journeys to other parts of the world opened her eyes to new cultures and traditions. Niki’s work is diverse, aiming to capture the essence of human nature, whether it be in a glance towards the lens, a subtle gesture or an outburst! Niki believes that life can be beautiful and hopes that she has successfully captured those moments which make life an unforgettable, yet challenging journey. Her exhibition called ‘Click’ runs from 13th November until 8th December 2012 and is being held at The Beecroft Art Gallery, opposite The Cliffs Pavilion. Opening times can be found on the gallery website. Admission is free. The neon flower picture is in Chalkwell Park and is made from a design done by the Children at Darlinghurst Primary School.
