Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2

or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. Special Appeal Preston the Mastiff Acres Way Kennels is currently running a special appeal to raise funds for a very special dog that they currently have in their care. Preston is a 3 year old Mastiff who unfortunately broke one of his legs. He had numerous oprations but sadly had to have the leg removed. This has cost the kennels over £1000 so a special appeal has been launched to raise money to recover the cost of the operation and to help further in Preston’s rehabilitation. Acres Way are also looking to find Preston a loving home. He loves lots of attention and cuddles and is looking for a relaxed home with lots of people but preferably no other dogs. Donations towards Preston’s operation and continuing care can be via cheque, cash or card at the kennels, or by PayPal at contact@acresway.co.uk. How else can you help? It takes thousands of pounds every week to keep the kennels running, without counting in unexpected veterinary fees such as Preston’s operation. here can you invest for a decent return?

Whilst it is impossible to give specific advice to someone without setting out their objectives and their appetite for investment risk, we are seeing that most people are now aware that they need to take some risk to get any return at all. We do not believe that rates will rise substantially for many years so cash deposits, Cash ISAs and government savings vehicles are going to carry on delivering next to nothing for a while to come, so a huge number of people have turned to direct investment in property. This has driven up property prices too high and the Government is keen on reining in this price growth, to make the property market more sustainable and accessible for those needing to buy an affordable house to live in. The changes include the removal of higher rate tax relief on mortgage interest, stamp duty for investment properties will be rising significantly from April, Capital Gains Tax on property sales will have to be reported within 30 days from 2019, and worryingly, there is a huge increase in supply of investible property coming through at the same time - just look at the thousands of flats being built in the area. The long term issues associated with investing in property are still there of course, potential of unpaid rents, property management issues, repairs and maintenance. These could have more of an impact if returns do become lower and all need careful consideration. It is likely that the returns from residential property will therefore slow dramatically over the next few years. So, to go back to the burning question at the top, if it’s not ‘cash’ or residential property, what should you invest in? We are concerned that too many people place too much reliance on property and prices will not keep rising for ever. Property has it’s place, but it should form part of a diversified portfolio. At Joseph Lamb we have been running an investment service for 11 years that has delivered consistent returns by diversifying across a range of investment types. We invest in stocks and shares when we feel risk levels are not too high in the UK or in overseas markets when appropriate. We blend this investment with traditional cash, commercial property ( which appears to be a good couple of years behind residential and still showing strong potential), and government or corporate bonds.

Our portfolios come in 6 risk levels, from Low to very High, so most people can be catered for, and have delivered excellent returns, ranging from 3.93% to 8.07% per annum after all costs and charges, since launch in October 2004. With property it is not possible to sell part of it and selling a whole property can take many months and cost thousands of pounds. Despite all the recent doom and gloom and uncertainty, we have still delivered 5.32% for our Medium Risk Portfolio after ongoing charges over the last year, and with low energy prices, low commodity prices, low wages (as they haven’t really risen since the crisis), and very cheap borrowing becoming more widely available, we believe the prospects for investing in a diversified portfolio look as good as ever. We can even save you some tax by using tax wrappers such as ISAS and pensions. Whilst investment ISAs are not deposits and like all investments will go up and down in value, just compare the long term returns with your cash ISAs! History of Castle Point

The Hotel Kynoch - Canvey Island

he Hotel Kynoch (right) was located approximately 800 yards east of the Lobster Smack on Haven Road. As the sign on the side of the building in the photograph above shows, the Hotel Kynoch was built in 1900. It was built by the Kynoch Dynamite Company which was based on the other side of Hole Haven Creek in Kynoch Town - now known as Coryton. Hole Haven Creek was an important place for the Kynoch Dynamite Company. Although the shipping of explosives bound for London had been banned beyond a certain point by the Thames Conservators, the Dynamite Company had been licensed to moor storage hulks in the creek - against the wishes of the Commissioners of Canvey. More than a dozen hulks were moored between Hole Haven Point and Pitsea, gunpowder being transferred from them to barges and then caves in Benfleet Creek.* Kynoch’s bought approximately 240 acres of land at Brickhouse Farm on the south west side of Canvey Island in order to build the hotel to accommodate their directors and business associates. The hotel proved to be an expensive investment and whilst the initial building estimate had been £2,500, a total of £7,000 was spent by the end of 1900 and opening was delayed until 1903. The Hotel, although a very pleasant residence, was quite isolated and it’s only access was via a track running below Brickhouse Farm along the Seawall. A roof terrace

was provided giving a fabulous panoramic view across the Thames Estuary and enabling guests to view passing shipping An elevated walkway led to the sea wall. The first recorded manageress of the Hotel Kynoch was Mrs Annie L. Bee. She was replaced in 1909 by a Mr James Went who later went on to become the landlord of the Lobster Smack. Subsequent hotel managers were Douglas Hemus and Edward Hibbert Smith. The hotel continued to run until the mid 1930s. During the war, it served as an army billet and then became the offices for the London and Coastal Oil Wharves. Sadly, this magnificent building was eventually left to fall into disrepair and was demolished around about 1960.
