Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels?
Adopting a Dog
Archie -

I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 Name:Once Archie Breed: Jack Russell cross Age: 2 days of your visit and take about half an hour. the home check is complete, you’ll be able toGood collect your with children: Unknown dog. You will need to bring with you someGood identification Re-Homing Update with dogs: No showing your current address, and the £130 adoption Additional information: Can be nervous on initial meet fee. THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Money Guidance
by Martin Lamb Dip. PFS Certs C11 (MP & ER) , Pensions, Unit Trusts, ‘OEICS’, I SAs Bonds………… The world of investments can
be very confusing, and even intimidating. Each ‘vehicle’ has it’s own taxation rules, which may be more or less beneficial to you dependent on your own circumstances. It is vital that you seek advice to make sure that your savings and investments are in the most tax efficient vehicles for you, and equally important to ensure that the investments within each vehicle are suitable. An ISA for example can be a ‘cash’ ISA which simply puts your money on deposit, or a ‘stocks and shares’ ISA. The term ‘stocks and shares’ ISA is misleading, as there are many investments that you can place in one these that are not stocks and shares such as Property funds, Government and Corporate Bond funds, Overseas bonds funds and Commodity funds. You can, with advice, build a balanced portfolio of investments inside a Stocks and Shares ISA, or indeed a personal pension. Whist it feels sensible to take little or no risk with the underlying investments, it is very important to understand how the world is changing and that taking little ‘risk’ with your savings could end up costing you dearly. At Joseph Lamb’s we believe that inflation will continue to increase, and don’t forget that the governments new ‘CPI’ inflation measure misleads. Have you filled your car up or a shopping trolley lately? We are all experiencing inflation running much higher than the official figure. In the meantime interest rates are now almost certain to remain at or around these alltime lows for years to come as the Government has to keep borrowing costs down, or we are all doomed! So whilst it may appear that leaving money in 20
‘safe havens’ such as cash or Government Bonds is the right thing to do, inflation will almost certainly erode it’s value very significantly. We have lost track of how many clients we have who retired ten or more years ago and are now feeling the pinch. If you want your money to deliver an income, then inflation is an even bigger problem as if you spend your interest the remaining capital balance becomes worth less and less very quickly. Only by investing some of your money in ‘real assets’ do you stand any chance of beating inflation going forwards. It may appear that ‘Investments’ are not delivering, but that is simply not the case, the returns since 2004 in our Medium risk portfolios are up to 8.13% pa, including the impact of the 2008 crisis, and have been performing more strongly than that recently. The world is changing, and still growing, but the relative importance of ‘The West’ is declining and any investment portfolio should reflect this. You can only invest in this growth by using a diverse portfolio not by leaving your money on deposit or in Cash ISAs, which can be transferred to Stocks and Shares ISAs. Inflation doesn’t stop when you retire! It must be allowed for in your retirement planning and you must look further down the road than age 65. Many of us will live longer in retirement than we earned a good living for……….this means we will all need more savings behind us than we imagine. Start now, tomorrow will be too late! And seek proper advice from acknowledge advisers with a long term track record! Martin Lamb, Managing Director of Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisers Ltd. Investments may go down as well as up, Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. This article does not constitute investment advice, readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article

History of Castle Point
St James The Less - Hadleigh T
he Parish church of St James The Less has been the spiritual and geographical centre of Hadleigh since approximately 1140. You may be surprised to learn that the church building is actually older than Hadleigh Castle by some 100 years or so! The church, built in a semi-circle shape at the East side is very typical of Norman design and it has remained pretty much unaltered over the last 800 years. This has been mainly due to the fact that until the start of this century, the population of the village remained small so there was no real need to make the building any bigger Defence against attack The way the church was constructed, with thick walls and narrow windows suggests that in Norman times, it
was built not only as a place of worship but also as a means of defence against coastal attacks. Don’t forget, the church was built well before the castle in the second half of the 12th century. Some alterations have been made over the years such as the renovation or addition of some of the nave windows between the 13th and 15th century. The porch and belfry were also added later. Major restoration work was also carried out in 1949 following extensive damage caused by enemy attacks during the Second World War. On the whole though, the church remains largely unchanged and remains one of the best examples of this type of Norman architecture in the country. Discovery Inside the church, several items of note can be seen. Back in the 1850’s, some plaster was removed from the inside walls and a number of wall paintings were discovered behind. The pictures included Jacobean texts, the Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments, St George and the dragon, some angels and a picture of St. Thomas of Canterbury. Unfortunately, once exposed to the open air most of the work did not survive apart from an angel and the picture of St Thomas. Other items of interest inside the church include the Royal Arms of Queen Anne, some 19th century stained glass windows and the font which has been altered over the years but still shows evidence of its Norman origins

B.O.P.H - Canvey Island B
usiness Opportunities for the Physically Handicapped or B.O.P.H is a registered charity which provides the physically handicapped and those with learning difficulties with a normal working environment, giving them a life comparable to their able bodied peers. B.O.P.H was founded in 1995 by Joan Lythgoe and her late husband. Their granddaughter, Joanne, suffered from vaccine damage at the age of 9 months that left her disabled and as she grew older and left school, the family found that all the support that was available during her school years was no longer available. There appeared to be a huge gap in the support system and a complete lack of work opportunities for young adults with disabilities. Joan and her husband made the life changing decision to set up a centre that would offer basic work opportunities in a safe and caring environment. There are currently 23 disabled people attending B.O.P.H ranging in age from 17 to 55. They carry out small but important tasks such as packing small items or cards and receive a small wage as well as care throughout the day. They feel a great sense of self worth and are able to maximise their full potential. The work also gives them stability in
their lives and the chance to enhance their personal development and maximise their potential whilst affording their carers with much needed respite. The B.O.P.H charity shop was opened in July 2010 and has proved invaluable in raising funds for the centre which has yearly overheads of ÂŁ52,000. With no help from the state, this amount has to be raised solely via fundraising. The charity shop can be found in the Knightswick Centre on Canvey Island and your unwanted items are always welcome. B.O.P.H is located at Units 6 & 7 Charfleets Close, Charfleets Industrial Estate, Canvey Island, SS8 0PW and is open Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm. Visitors are always welcome. Visitors will be able to step aboard this spectacular vessel while it is moored at the end of Southend Pier, and will also be able to book tickets to set sail on her too. Details are as follows:
Atlantis is a hugely popular attraction in Southend. We hope as many people as possible come along to see this magnificent vessel from the Netherlands which is a real thrill for people to step aboard - or to set sail on too. “The arrival of the majestic Atlantis is a very fitting way to help Southend embark on its new Maritime Festival - a most exciting prospect.

Recipe Corner Chocolate Brownies There is nothing quite like a fudgy, dense chocolate brownie. There are so many variations on the classic chocolate brownie recipe and this one comes from Cadbury’s.
Ingredients 175g Dark Chocoate such as Bournvillekikk, broken up 175g unsalted butter, diced 3 medium eggs 250g caster sugar 75g plain flour 40g Cocoa Powder 50g chopped walnuts (optional)
Method
Whisk the eggs and sugar until thick and creamy, pour over the chocolate mixture and fold in. Sift in the flour and cocoa and fold in the nuts. Pour into the prepared tin, making sure it goes right into the corners and bake for 25-30 minutes. The top should be crusty with a slight wobble underneath. 5. Cool completely in the tin (can refrigerate overnight which aids cutting) and then cut into squares or triangles.
Preheat oven to 180C, gas mark 4. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with baking parchment. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Cool slightly.
