Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey
Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way KenAdopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the
home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Alfie the Yorkie Cross that we featured in our last issue have been successfully re-homed. He is settling well into his new family. Boycie the Staff and Barney the Labradoodle are still looking for loving homes so we have featured them again this month.

Money Guidance New Pension Rules T
he incredible new rules have now been confirmed and have turned pensions into the most flexible & tax efficient savings plans, given that your contributions to a pension receive tax relief and then grow virtually tax free over the years. There is now no limit on the amount you can take from your pension (currently from age 55). If you wish to enjoy it over the early years of retirement that will be your choice. If you would rather invest it to make a sustainable income, or any combination of income and lump sum withdrawals then again, the choice is yours. There are two new ways to facilitate this:
Flexi Access Drawdown This allows you to take up to 25% tax free lump sum, the balance of your pension fund is then invested in a Flexi Access Drawdown. From the invested fund you are free to take withdrawals of any amount at any time. This could be as regular monthly payments to meet your living expenses or one off withdrawals to fund things like holidays or new cars, but beware anything above the 25% will be taxed as income, so any ideas you have about ‘spending’ your pension fund should be very carefully considered. The media have been talking about withdrawing your fund to buy rental property. This makes little sense to us - why would you move a now highly ‘liquid’ tax exempt fund into a very ‘illiquid’ taxable asset?
Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS) This options allows a lump sum of any amount to be taken from uncrystallised funds (funds from which benefits have not yet been taken) , and leaves the remaining funds invested and in the pension. 14
These lump sums are paid as 25% tax free/75% taxed as income. For those not requiring their tax free lump sum upfront, this is likely to be the most tax efficient method of receiving retirement income – 25% less income tax than would otherwise be the case.
Death Benefits The new rules provide unparalleled opportunity to pass on wealth, free of tax. Previously once ‘crystallised’ the only way your fund could pass to someone other than your spouse was after a 55% tax charge. It is now possible to pass your pension fund on death without tax. If you die before 75 your beneficiaries will pay no tax at all, after 75 the fund is tax free but any withdrawals your beneficiaries make are taxed as income at their rate of tax. All the old objections to pensions have been swept away. You must consider maximising contributions to pensions during your working life. The tax efficiencies are enormous. Equally you must get advice on the best way to withdraw your pension or it will be too easy to run out of money or pay far too much tax in retirement. As experienced and qualified pension and retirement advisers we would of course be happy to help.

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
The Rayleigh, Rochford & Castle Point Talking Newspaper for the Blind T
his Talking Newspaper (Charity no. 278578) started over 30 years ago with help from Rayleigh Lions, who also provided the funds for the initial purchase of equipment. We know that it’s relatively easy for those with sight problems to access national and international news simply by switching on the TV or radio. But it’s not always so easy to find out about local news and events. That’s where we come in – we make audio recordings for those people who live in our areas and who may be blind or partially sighted. Our recordings are now produced on USB memory sticks. We can supply special players for listeners who do not have their own. Each month, our listeners receive two local news editions and one magazine edition. Those who live in the Rochford area also receive a copy of Rochford District Matters every quarter. These recordings arrive in ‘Articles for the Blind’ yellow wallets. The wallets have return address
20
labels and, once the listener has finished with the memory stick, it can be returned to us in the wallet. We have our own rented studio at St Luke’s Place, Rochford and it is here that our volunteers make the recordings. It is a FREE service. Increasing public awareness is vital to us and we advertise our existence whenever and wherever we can.
If you know someone who would like to receive our service or if you simply want some more information, please call: Janet Berry: Chairman/Treasurer Ann Willis: Secretary

Local History
Rayleigh Weir Stadium R
ayleigh Weir Stadium on the main Arterial Road (where Sainsbury’s at Rayleigh Weir is today) was first opened in 1948. A gentleman called Frank Arnold had obtained a licence from the British Speedway Control Board to open a 385 yard track at Rayleigh and work started on the site in January 1947. The first venture at the stadium was Speedway and Rayleigh became the home of the Rayleigh Rockets team. The first ever fixture was a friendly meeting against Leicester taking place on 24th July 1948 in front of a crowd of 11,500 with a display by the London Irish Girl Pipers. The winner of the first ever race was Rockets Captain Ron Howes. The Rockets closed in 1958 but re-opened again in 1960 and rode at the stadium until 1973. They were always well supported with crowds of over 10,000 but were less successful on the track.
The owners of the stadium wanted to maximize the use of the venue and over the years it also hosted greyhound racing, stock car racing, harness horse racing, open air wrestling, cycle speedway and firework displays. The only reminder of Rayleigh Weir Stadium today is the road alongside the supermarket called ‘Stadium Way’.

Southend-on-Sea Maritime FesA
brand new festival is ready to set sail this summer, celebrating Southend-on-Sea’s relationship with the waves. The first ever Southend-on-Sea Maritime Festival (6th -7th June 2015) promises to be a weekend of free nautical but nice activities, promotions and events for all the family. Southend-on-Sea will surely be on the crest of a wave as it celebrates its fascinating maritime history, heritage and visitor appeal during two lively days of fun on the seafront. Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is organising the event to celebrate the maritime heritage of the borough. Funding for the festival has been provided by the Coastal Communities Fund, to which the Council made a successful bid in 2013 to improve the Southend Seafront Economy and raise the profile of the history and culture of the area. The all-new festival will include live music, celebrity chefs’ cookery demonstrations, wine tastings, opportunities to try your hand at rowing, sand castlemaking and sculptures through to history talks and
26
re-enactments. Whether you’re a salty old sea dog, or confirmed landlubber, there’s plenty to see and do for everyone. Graham Longley, Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism and Economic Development, says “I am delighted that we have secured external funding to run this event and I am looking forward to being involved and part of it. We have a Film Festival, Folk Festival, and a Jazz Festival so I am very pleased that this year we will also have a Maritime Festival that will explore our important relationship with the water and our wonderful seafront. This will be a wonderful event for all the family with a host of activities that will boost the seafront economy and be a great weekend for residents, businesses and visitors alike. I hope that it is well supported and could lead to it becoming a fixture in the Southend-on-Sea events calendar.”.
