Welcome A very warm welcome to the April 2013 edition of the Southend Local Business Guide. As we head into Spring, why not spend a day at one of the many glorious historic buildings and gardens in Essex. We feature 4 great potential days out in Essex for you to enjoy (page 16). Or why not get out with the family and experience some lovely walks in Essex. Our article on Spring Walks in Essex (page 4) includes walks from Wat Tyler Country Park to West Canvey Marshes – we have some lovely parklands to explore. We also have our regular ‘What’s on in Southend’ feature (page 6) to get you out and about in the local area. We also have our regular local community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point. Both of the dogs we featured recently, Reggie the Mastiff and Izzy the Bull Terrier have now both been re-homed successfully. Let’s hope we can find more homes for the dogs we feature in this month’s edition (pages 8-9). In our other Community features this month we feature the local South Essex group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists who encourage Advanced Driving skills and better road safety (page 18) and we have a feature on the thrilling 2 week Southend Maritime Festival which is taking place in May (page 21). In our regular recipe corner (page 22) we feature a traditional recipe for Chocolate Brownies and there is also our regular financial column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisors (see centre pages). If you have any interesting stories about Southend or if you are a local team, association or charity that would like to be featured in any future editions of the Local Business Guide then please drop us a line at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk Please visit our website at www.thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk where you will find our latest guide on-line.

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on.

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Money Guidance
by Martin Lamb Dip. PFS Certs C11 (MP & ER) , Pensions, Unit Trusts, ‘OEICS’, I SAs Bonds………… The world of investments can
be very confusing, and even intimidating. Each ‘vehicle’ has it’s own taxation rules, which may be more or less beneficial to you dependent on your own circumstances. It is vital that you seek advice to make sure that your savings and investments are in the most tax efficient vehicles for you, and equally important to ensure that the investments within each vehicle are suitable. An ISA for example can be a ‘cash’ ISA which simply puts your money on deposit, or a ‘stocks and shares’ ISA. The term ‘stocks and shares’ ISA is misleading, as there are many investments that you can place in one these that are not stocks and shares such as Property funds, Government and Corporate Bond funds, Overseas bonds funds and Commodity funds. You can, with advice, build a balanced portfolio of investments inside a Stocks and Shares ISA, or indeed a personal pension. Whist it feels sensible to take little or no risk with the underlying investments, it is very important to understand how the world is changing and that taking little ‘risk’ with your savings could end up costing you dearly. At Joseph Lamb’s we believe that inflation will continue to increase, and don’t forget that the governments new ‘CPI’ inflation measure misleads. Have you filled your car up or a shopping trolley lately? We are all experiencing inflation running much higher than the official figure. In the meantime interest rates are now almost certain to remain at or around these alltime lows for years to come as the Government has to keep borrowing costs down, or we are all doomed! So whilst it may appear that leaving money in 14 22
‘safe havens’ such as cash or Government Bonds is the right thing to do, inflation will almost certainly erode it’s value very significantly. We have lost track of how many clients we have who retired ten or more years ago and are now feeling the pinch. If you want your money to deliver an income, then inflation is an even bigger problem as if you spend your interest the remaining capital balance becomes worth less and less very quickly. Only by investing some of your money in ‘real assets’ do you stand any chance of beating inflation going forwards. It may appear that ‘Investments’ are not delivering, but that is simply not the case, the returns since 2004 in our Medium risk portfolios are up to 8.13% pa, including the impact of the 2008 crisis, and have been performing more strongly than that recently. The world is changing, and still growing, but the relative importance of ‘The West’ is declining and any investment portfolio should reflect this. You can only invest in this growth by using a diverse portfolio not by leaving your money on deposit or in Cash ISAs, which can be transferred to Stocks and Shares ISAs. Inflation doesn’t stop when you retire! It must be allowed for in your retirement planning and you must look further down the road than age 65. Many of us will live longer in retirement than we earned a good living for……….this means we will all need more savings behind us than we imagine. Start now, tomorrow will be too late! And seek proper advice from acknowledge advisers with a long term track record! Martin Lamb, Managing Director of Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisers Ltd. Investments may go down as well as up, Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. This article does not constitute investment advice, readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article

Working for the Community
Like to be a Better Driver? T
he Institute of Advanced Motorists (the IAM) was formed over 50 years ago to promote road safety and to improve the skills of drivers and riders. The ‘Advanced Test’ was introduced in 1956 and the advanced riders test followed in 1976. Since then the tests, which are recognised and quality assured by the Driving Standards Agency, have been developed and refined to reflect the ever changing conditions on UK roads. Support and preparation for the test is carried out through more than 200 local groups around the country, so anyone wishing to improve their driving or riding skills will be able to find a group convenient to them. Each group has a number of trained ‘Observers’ who are assigned to ‘Associates’ preparing for the test. The Associate will then meet their Observer, usually every two weeks, to go for an observed drive of about 90 minutes in the their own car. The number of drives required prior to the test varies according to the standard of the Associate, but normally four to six is sufficient. The Associate then takes a drive with a second observer to check that they are indeed ready for the test. Testing is carried out by a qualified examiner, who will usually be a police driver, either serving or retired. Failing the test has no effect on one’s driving licence and a re-test is allowed if desired. Drivers over 55 who wish to check that their driving is satisfactory in modern conditions and also to boost their confidence can take an assessment drive without a test. A
similar scheme is also available to young new drivers. In both cases it is hoped that they would decide to go on and prepare for the Advanced Test. Members receive the magazine ‘Advanced Driving’ three times a year and there are a number of other benefits available including the possibility of cheaper insurance and road recovery membership. Skill days are arranged at race tracks around the country which members can take part in to improve their vehicle handling.
How to contact them The local group, serving South Essex meets at 8pm on Wednesday evenings every other month at Hockley Community Centre, Westminster Drive, Hockley, SS5 4XD. For more details contact: Graham Oster-Ritter on 01702 558871 E: grahamoster@btinternet.com Jean Mansell on 01268 754922

Pour into the prepared tin, making sure it goes right into the corners and bake for 25-30 minutes. The top should be crusty with a slight wobble underneath. 5. Cool completely in the tin (can refrigerate overnight which aids cutting) and then cut into squares or triangles.
Preheat oven to 180C, gas mark 4. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with baking parchment. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Cool slightly.
