Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2
or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update Brilliant news – Leo, the 2 year old Lurcher and Fred, the 8 year old Beagle that we featured in our last issue have been successfully re-homed with loving families. They are both settling in well to their new home

Mother’s Day If you thought that Mother’s Day was just another commercially-motivated holiday, designed more to line the pockets of the card makers than to celebrate motherhood, think again! In an age when every other weekend seems to bring one “special” day or another, Mother’s Day is one of the few genuine traditions still left. official celebration of mothers and motherhood. President Woodrow Wilson finally obliged in 1914, naming the second Sunday in May a national holiday - Mother’s Day. Although many other countries have followed the US’s example by celebrating Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May, it’s far from a universal date. Mother’s Day is celebrated as early as February in Norway, and as late as December in Iran, with a smattering of other dates in between. Here in the UK, we always celebrate Mother’s Day on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
F

India’s Mother’s Day celebration is perhaps the longest. It lasts for ten days in October, It was in seventeenth-century England, however, in a celebration known as “Durga Puja”, with that Mothering Sunday first started to take on the form that we now recognise. Those were the days “Durga” being a goddess said to protect the people of servants and landed gentry, when children would from evil. In the former Yugoslavia, meanwhile, the Western tradition is reversed, with mother’s go into “service” at a relatively young age, often moving far from home to live with their employers. expected to give gifts to their children, rather than the other way around! This follows a tradition On Mother’s day, though, those children were whereby children sneak into their mother’s room given the day off, and would head back home to early in the morning, and tie her up. Mother’s Day didn’t reach America until 1872, when Julia Ward Howe organised a special day for mothers. Anna M. Jarvis picked up on the tradition in 1907, when she started to campaign for an

Money Guidance Cash - The Highest Risk Investment?
Y
ou may have read this headline in the Sunday Telegraph’s money pages recently? It was an unusually good article that outlined the writers thoughts on inflation. I have covered this in previous articles, but my thoughts now appear to be spreading amongst the financial and adviser community. The published inflation rates seem to significantly underplay the REAL inflation we are all seeing in the price of goods. Interestingly whilst the Government were patting themselves on the back as the Consumer Price Index fell to 2.7% pa last month, they seemed entirely not to spot that the traditional (and in our view more representative of reality), Retail Price Index actually ROSE to 4.1% pa! All of this whilst base interest rates remain at 0.5% and there are hundreds of ‘savings’ accounts and Cash ISA accounts out there paying less than that! Whilst saving or investing in cash does indeed feel like a ‘safe’ thing to do, would you really buy any investment that guaranteed to lose you 10% in REAL terms over the next three years? Because that is what is happening to your cash deposits and ISAs now as the rate of inflation is currently far higher than the returns on your deposit. This gap is now at least as high as it was back in the financially grim 1970s. We believe this period of very low interest rates and relatively high inflation will actually last for many years. Because it has to. The government are spending £42 BILLION pa just on interest! There is so much debt in the economy that they HAVE to keep interest rates down for as long as possible. After a few years the inflation this creates may well enable them to start repaying the debt…….. Not much of an ‘official’ Government policy, but in our view this is the reality of it, whatever they may say about controlling inflation, we are not sure they want it any lower than it is now. For those who wish to try and grow the real value of their savings, it is vital that they are exposed to some risk and invest in the assets that will benefit from inflation in order to try to achieve higher
14
returns. More and more people will have to consider this very seriously. There are other options available, but it is imperative that you seek advice. As many of the banks have pulled out of the ‘advice’ market, where can you turn? At Joseph Lamb we have been running our own investment portfolios for many years. They are available to all, not just the super wealthy. Over the 5 years to the end of October our Low Risk Investment ISA portfolio achieved 5.6% pa. our Medium Risk portfolio, 7.8% pa. Whilst there are advice and some product charges to deduct from these, they are still compelling, and have been achieved with much lower volatility than the majority of our peers. You can see these , and other portfolios in detail on our website www.josephlamb.co.uk, click on Investments and Savings tab, and look at our Portfolio Performance. If you are wary of investing consider this. Premium Bonds are accessible if you need them, tax free and paying on average about 1.3% better than most savings accounts, if you win, but still considerably below inflation. Nonetheless they remain the best home for cash type deposits. It could be an idea that you place enough cash here for say two or three years of expenditure, and the balance is invested in something like our portfolios? This should provide some growth over the near future, and reduce the risk inherent in investing? If this sounds like an idea, or you want a general chat about investing, risk, tax efficient income, or for that matter ANY financial topic you need help with, feel free to contact us. We are in our 43rd year providing Financial Advice. Please look at our client testimonials on our website, after all their opinions matter more than mine! Initial meetings are free and without any obligation. Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER) Investments may go down as well as up, Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. History of Rochford The Peculiar People
T
he Peculiar People was a religious group or sect founded in Rochford in 1837. The founder of the Peculiar People was a farm workers son called James Banyard who was born at Rochford in 1800. Banyard was a shoemaker by trade and was involved in smuggling activities. He was often drunk - much to the despair of his wife. Eventually his wife convinced him to join her at a service in the local Wesleyan Methodist chapel. The preacher’s message had a such a profound effect on Banyard that he became teetotal and regularly attended the church. He soon became a reputable preacher but in 1837 had a difference of opinion with the Methodist Church. He and his friend William Bridges took a lease on an old workhouse in Rochford which became the first chapel of new group which Banyard and Bridges called the Peculiar People, ‘peculiar’ meaning ‘special’ The name was taken from Deuteronomy 14:2 and 1 Peter 2:9. The sect had very strict rules; they practised spiritual healing and denounced doctors, many of them believing in miracle cures, which led to the deaths of several children. Gradually, more chapels sprung up and were established in the Essex, Kent and East London and by 1852 a constitution was established with bishops, elders and other helps. At the height of the Peculiar’s popularity there were 43 chapels.
doctor despite his beliefs. This led to him not being allowed to be a Bishop but just a regular preacher. In keeping with the strictness of their religion Peculiars were expected to lead exemplary lives. Dress for both sexes usually black with very plain straight laced fashions. They were expected to attend church each Sunday whatever the weather, their personal circumstances or state of health. Over the next 100 years the attendance at chapels waned to the extent that many chapels closed or merged with other non conformist churches until 1956 when the peculiar People merged with other evangelical groups to become the Union of Evangelical churches. health.
