Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey

Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the

home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Mouse the Greyhound and Murphy the Crossbreed that we featured in our last issue have both been successfully re-homed.

Money Guidance N

ow that the dust is settling on the much lauded new Pensions Flexibilities, what have our experiences been? The media were whipping up a ‘cash’ frenzy encouraging all to access their pensions and go on a spending spree. We have found that whilst there has been a huge increase in the requests to access smaller pension pots, most can see the wisdom in retaining their pension fund intact , to use it for what it was intended for- living in retirement! It is sad that many cannot see that a significant part of their later lives will be blighted by simply not having enough income, and that in all the ‘noise’ around the new rules the primary purpose of pensions has been forgotten- namely to be able to live comfortably when you stop work. The primary purpose apart, recent experiences highlight just how advantageous pensions are now, and the media are now talking about getting as much money into pension rather than extracting it! Anything to fill a page........ I should remind you why withdrawing all your pension is probably a bad idea- Income Tax. If you haven’t accessed any of your pension yet the first 25% is tax free, the remainder is taxed as income. If your pension provider has not previously paid you any benefits the chances are they will use an emergency tax code and tax 75% of your fund at 40%! Whilst you could reclaim any over payment this will take time and involve tax returns. So beware, if withdrawing you may get less than you expect! Let me assume that you still want the withdrawal and are happy to pay the tax, then you must consider what you are going to do with the money? I have had clients say they want to access it just so they can get at it if they need it? This makes no sense as the new rules permit you to access it any time, so why pay tax now if you can access the fund when needed? In addition whilst the funds are in your pension they may be subject to some investment risk but they should in the current climate have more chance of growth than if removed and left languishing in the bank, and the growth is free of Tax! So unless you are retiring in the truest sense, or need to use the money for a something specific it makes no sense to draw the pension. It should also be remembered that whilst it is retained in a

14

pension it is in most circumstances free of Inheritance Tax on your death. Many clients have told me they intend to make a withdrawal and buy other investments. This makes little sense. One person approached me who was going to pay 42% tax on his withdrawal (because of it’s size) so his new investment would have to more than double to get back to where he is already! Much of this is very misguided and is driven by simple misunderstanding of the returns, flexibilities and tax benefits of pensions. It is vital you seek advice before withdrawing your funds. Now consider that if you are still working, in middle age, and you are saving for the rainy day, why would you not put as much as you can into pensions? You can access it if needed after the age of 55, you get tax relief at your marginal rates on contributions up to £40,000 pa if you have enough earnings, and the growth is free from tax, the fund is exempt from IHT and 25 % of the future value can be paid to you tax free! If you have the income to justify it and you are in your 50s why not turn your ISAs into pensions? You would get your ISA value grossed up by your marginal tax rate, even a basic rate tax payer would turn their £10,000 ISA into £12,500 overnight by doing so, and you would still have full access, tax free growth, no IHT and the tax on withdrawal will be less than the relief when withdrawn, so you are making money from the tax man! Again this is an area where a little bit of advice from a qualified experienced professional will reap rewards. At Joseph Lamb we have 45 years experience in helping people manage these issues and we will be only to pleased to help you.

Rayleigh History - The Railway For hundreds of years Rayleigh was a small, mainly agricultural community with a population of about 1200 during most of the 19th century. This all changed on 1st October 1889 with the arrival of the Great Eastern Railway. The site of the railway station was originally part of Castle Hill Farm which extended up to the High Street and included Rayleigh Mount and the site of the Rayleigh Castle and Tower Windmill. The route from Wickford to Southend was initially a single track but the station and most of the bridges had been built to allow for dual tracking. Landowners benefited from the railway – they could sell their land for market gardens or for new housing as shown in the poster below.

By 1893 increased traffic, due to the start of land and property sales in the local area, resulted in part of the track being straightened and the platform extended. The track was finally duelled shortly after Oct 1900. By 1907 annual season ticket sales had reached 100. By 1957 they had increased to 20,000 and by 1963 – 50,538! On 29th October 1917 a German aircraft dropped it’s bombs in the vicinity but only one window and some roof tiles were damaged at the station. The photo above is circa 1930 and shows the station entrance with the staff cottages on the left (now the taxi rank) and the station café (which was demolished by a bus in 1996) on the right. On the site of what is now the car park there were cattle pens, coal yard and a goods yard. The station changed from gas lamps to electric light in 1932, whilst in 1936 increased road traffic resulted in the London Road being widened and the railway bridge above it being extended.

The role of the Cat’s Protection League is to foster cats that have come into their care until they can be rehomed, meeting Cats Protection’s veterinary standards for neutering, vaccinating and microchipping. They also operate a lost and found register to reunite missing cats with their owners and try to find homes for cats whose owners have become ill or died, moved house, can no longer afford to keep them or have been evicted from their homes or physically abandoned them. They regularly carry out a variety of fundraising activities, including bazaars and outdoor events, teas and Craft and Gift Fairs.

26

The next Cat Homing Show will be at Parklands Nursing Home, 21-27 Thundersley Park Road, Benfleet, SS7 1EG on Sunday 23 August. It will be a smaller Show than normal and run from 2pm to 4pm. However, you don’t have to wait until the Homing Show to offer a cat a home - the Cat’s Protection League would be delighted to hear from you today. Please contact Yvonne on 01268 750831 for more information and to arrange the home-check that will be needed before the cat or kitten is homed with you. All the cats and kittens available for homing are in good health, microchipped, vaccinated and, dependent on their age, neutered. They also come covered by four weeks’ Pet Plan insurance. For more details visit www.catsrayleigh.org.uk or call 01268 750831.
