Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2
or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update Sadly Luna the Lurcher Cross Staff, Jack the Lurcher and Rosco the Staff that we featured in our last issue are still looking for new homes. This month we feature 3 new dogs looking for their “Forever Homes”.

Health and Wellbeing Brain Exercises
So whilst these brain games and puzzles are fun and can improve specific skills, there are not a quick fix for mental decline associated with the aging process. A different sort of training, physical exercise, however, has been show to maintain and improve your part of the brain that controls your ‘higher level’ thinking. Numerous animal and human studies have shown that regular exercise improves what is called our ‘executive functioning’. This is controlled by an area of the brain just behind your forehead and it is what allows us to choose appropriate behaviour, inhibit inappropriate behaviour and concentrate in the face of distractions. Executive function also influences basic cognitive functions such as processing speed, response speed and working memory.
A
re you worried about holding on to your mental dexterity and memory as you age? Do you think Sudoko, cleverlymarketed computer games and ‘brain exercises’ are the answer? Think again, regular exercise, such as a brisk walk three times a week, is the key to keeping, even growing, your cognitive powers as you age! Despite what the advertisers would like you to believe, there is scant evidence that directly links computer or paper brain exercises with an overall improvement in mental faculties. Instead, these games tend to produce an improvement in the specific task the game trains you in. That is, you get better at the game, puzzle or at remembering lists accurately but unless the exercise spans a broad spectrum of abilities, there seems to be no benefit to general mental fitness.
12
Executive function starts to decline when people reach their 70s. But elderly people who have been athletic all their lives have much better executive function than sedentary people of the same age. Studies have indicated that when inactive people get more exercise, even starting in their 70s, their executive function improves. So do you need to start training for the Olympics in order to remember your shopping list? No! Even just a regular programme of fast walking for 30 to 60 minutes three or more times a week will make a difference to your brain functioning. Plus you get the added benefits of improvements to your muscle tone, circulation and general health! A big worry for us all as we age is the risk of dementia but again, we should consider an active life as part of our
to advertise in the next issue of The Local Business Guide call: 01375 402 546
protection against mental decline. People who exercise regularly in middle age are one-third as likely to get Alzheimer’s disease in their 70s as those who did not exercise. Even people who begin exercising in their 60s have their risk reduced by half. We’re not really sure exactly how exercise helps brain function: theories being investigated are the increased production of the feel-good hormone serotonin, improved blood circulation to the brain and the increased production of a growth protein that may stimulate the generation of brain cells and the connections between them. What is known is that regular exercise slows the age related shrinkage of the part of the brain responsible for executive function. So put down that pencil, don’t bother investing in expensive computer games (which encourage you do spend more time on the sofa) and pull on some trainers. If it’s a while since you exercised regularly or you have some problems with backache, foot or knee pain then I’d recommend seeing your local chiropractically trained practitioner before you begin a new
exercise programme. It’s better to start with a properly aligned and functioning body than to worsen niggling problems by ignoring them. Remember, it’s never too late or too early to begin an active life. This article was provided by Spinal and Natural Healthcare Centre. For more information or visit www.spinalandnatural.co.uk

Money Guidance
How much is enough to live on in retirement? D
eciding how much money you need to live on in retirement can be tricky. Actually stating what is ‘enough’ is difficult as circumstances change over time. Starting with the least amount is where to begin, which usually constitutes all necessary bills to be paid for i.e. housing, food, utilities and clothes. Thereafter there will be expenses for socialising, travel, goods and services. A recent study showed that for a single person, a weekly income of £270 is needed and for a pensioner couple it is £348. This equates to an annual range of approximately £14,000 to £18,000. To provide £14,000 from a fund with an assumed return of 5% per annum would mean a pension pot of roughly £280,000 is required. Most people don’t have that as the UK average is nearer £50,000 to £60,000. This means that the required income will need to come from other sources such as State Pension (£151.25 a week for retirees from April 2016) and other assets such as savings. If we again assume that the State Pension will provide £7,000, the rest of the £14,000 will need to come from other assets. Let’s say that the £50,000 pension provides £2,500 per annum (5% return) we still need £4,500. If this were to be taken from the pension pot as further drawdown, it would mean that the pot would need to grow at 14% per year just to stand still! Other things also need to be considered such as ensuring that the income doesn’t dry up. This may lead to a decision to purchase an annuity. Is the growth / return rate sustainable? What if the fund is invested in the wrong sector or product? If you have an investment property, what happens if there is an extended void period for the rental? Also what if you
14
need to sell the property for other reasons? This would create a shortfall in the rental and therefore income. The tax treatment of other personal assets may affect the net income you will receive. Budgeting is therefore an important aspect to retirement. When someone first retires they are more likely to do more as opposed to when they reach their 80’s. This will have an impact on how much income you need throughout retirement. A lot of people will need more than the £14,000 per year in retirement and if you rely on the State to make up the shortfall, then you are in for a rude awakening. The recent pension reforms that came into effect in April 2015 were a clear message from the Government that people need to start taking ownership of their pension and retirement provision. What income is needed during retirement will be forever fluid due to changing circumstances and health of the retiree. Perhaps it would be prudent to start thinking about how to budget for the desired retirement income way, way, way before you hang up your boots!! As always, a little bit of advice from a qualified, experienced professional can improve your finances and help you avoid the pitfalls. At Joseph Lamb we have over 45 years experience and a team of highly qualified advisers who would be happy to help you. Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER)

Rayleigh Community Local Charities Benefit from Former Chairman’s Year in Office
T
he former Chairman of Rochford District Council, Mrs Heather Glynn, has donated a total of £9,624.87 to guide dog charities supporting Blind, Deaf and Disabled people. Each year, the Chairman of Rochford District Council nominates one or more charities which they will promote and raise money for during their time as Chairman. The 2015/16 Chairman, Mrs Heather Glynn, chose to support three charities: Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and Dog A.I.D. Whilst she was Chairman Heather organised a number of charity events, raffles and collections, and by the time she retired in May 2016 an amazing total of £9,624.87 had been raised. This has been split equally between the three charities so that they each receive £3,208.29.
20
Heather Glynn said: “I am honoured to have raised so much money for guide dog charities during my time as Chairman. Guide dogs make a huge difference to the lives of blind, deaf and disabled people, but this would not be possible without the work of these charities”. Nigel Sim, representing the Southend branch of Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, said: “On behalf of Guide Dogs for the Blind, I would like to thank Heather for raising such a wonderful sum of money for our charity. This will go towards the funding of our puppies and guide dogs within our group”. More information about the charities is available at: www.GuideDogs.org.uk www.HearingDogs.org.uk www.DogAID.org.uk

It may involve playing a game of football, doing some painting or just sitting and chatting with members to make them feel welcome and involved with the club - every week is different. There is a lower age limit of 16 and an upper age limit of 30. No skills are required, just a desire to work with children with the ability to engage members in conversation. For more information of these volunteering opportunities and many others in the local area, contact the Rayleigh, Rochford and District Association of Voluntary Services at: 105a High Street, Rayleigh, SS6 7QA or call 01268 772796. Email: rravs@rravs.org.uk. Further details are also available at www.rravs.org.uk

This Month in History 2nd August 1934 - On this day, Chancellor Adolf Hitler became the sole leader of Germany following the death of President Paul von Hindenburg. In little more than a decade, the National Socialist (Nazi) Party had risen from a radical splinter group to Germany’s ruling party, allowing Hitler to seize powers that had previously been divided among the president, chancellor, and the German Parliament. With Hindenburg’s death, the last remnants of Germany’s democratic government were dismantled, leaving Hitler - a megalomaniac intent on war and genocide - in command of the nation. 5th August 1962 - On this date, screen icon Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her Los Angeles home. She was found lying naked in her bed with an empty bottle of Nembutal sleeping pills by her side. There has been much speculation about Marilyn’s death and the causes of it. Many have suggested that it was highly unlikely she committed suicide as the coroner indicated but perhaps accidentally took an overdose of drugs. Others have suggested that a third party administered the drug. . 8th August 1963 - The notorious Great Train Robbery was committed on this day. £2.6million in used notes was stolen by a gang of 15 men. The gang tampered with the train signals and used a battery powered red light, causing the train to stop so they could board and hijack it. They travelled half a mile to where they had vehicles waiting so they could unload the money sacks. No guns were used but the driver was hit on the head with an iron bar. Most of the money has never been recovered. 24th August 79AD - Mount Vesuvius erupted near Pompeii in Southern Italy. Many people escaped but over 2000 were buried under 7 feet of molten lava and ash. The hot volcanic ash helped to preserve the bodies and the buildings that it buried for hundreds of years. The volcano has erupted many times since and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people now living close to it and its tendency towards explosive eruptions. 26
