Welcome A very warm welcome to the October 2016 edition of the Rayleigh Local Business Guide. The Summer Holidays may be over, but there are still opportunities to get out and about with the kids and show them that learning can be fun. Our article on page 6 gives you some ideas for educational days out for all ages and interests. We also have our regular ‘What’s On in Rayleigh’ on page 16 where we feature a Halloween Family Disco, a Lullaby Concert for children and an organised Ramble in North Fambridge. We also have our regular community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point (pages 10-11). Ellie the Terrier and Cara the Staff who we featured in our last issue have both been successfully re-homed. Ted the Crossbreed is currently on home trial with a family. This month we feature 4 new dogs that are looking for loving homes. Within our Community section this month we bring you information on the local services provided by the Alzeimer’s Society (page 20) and we explore the local volunteering opportunities within the area (page 24). We also have a Health and Well Being article supplied by Spinal and Natural Health Care Centre about the importance of looking after your feet (pages 12 and 13) and our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages). If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Rayleigh guide then please get in touch at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you are a local business and would like to advertise in the Guide, then please contact our salesperson Ricky on 01375 402546 who will give you a no obligation quote. Educational Visits In Essex Now the children have returned to school, why not remind them that learning can be fun by visiting one of these educational places in Essex. The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker in Brentwood was designed for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister! Their collective task was to organise the survival of the population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war. A great day out - there’s so much to learn, see and do. For opening times visit www.secretnuclearbunker.co.uk Southend Planetarium presents a range of talks about astronomy and the night sky. All presentations are given live, giving plenty of opportunity for any questions you may wish to ask the knowledgeable lecturers. There are public performances every Saturday at 11am, 2pm amd 3pm. Booking is essential. For more information and opening times visit www.southendmuseums.co.uk or to book call 01702 434449

Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village of 1066 near Stansted is the only motte and bailey castle in the world that has been faithfully reconstructed on its original site. Wander around the village, behind the castle walls, and enter into the many houses whilst mingling with the many animals that roam freely within the village. There is also a Toy Museum and life sized dinosaur models. For more information visit www.mountfitchetcastle.com

Tilbury Fort has protected London’s seaward approach from the 16th century through to the Second World War. Spend a great family day out here as you explore the magazine houses used to store vast quantities of gunpowder or enter the bastion magazine passages and feel what it was like for the soldiers who lived here. Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2

or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you

Health and Wellbeing

Live Life Feet First

Feet can be plagued with many fungal and bacterial problems as well as symptoms of more serious conditions such as diabetes but I want to draw your attention to importance of properly functioning feet. The most obvious symptoms of foot trouble are pain and dysfunction (limping, favouring one foot or the other, inability to put weight on the heel and/or the toes). Pain and dysfunction caused by illness or injury can force you change your gait (the way you walk) and create significant stresses on the joints of your legs, hips and lower spine. Your feet are the foundation for your entire body. When they suffer, your whole body is placed in jeopardy. Even without pain, foot dysfunction can cause your whole body to overcompensate, which can lead to back pain and even headache, not to mention the emotional stress of discomfort and limitations on movement that can spread from the feet upward.

T

he health and function of your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. A quarter of the bones in your body are in your feet. Simply walking can produce more pressure than the sum of your body weight. The average person walks more than four times the circumference of the globe in their lifetime. Many patients at the Spinal and Natural Healthcare Centre think that foot discomfort and pain is a normal. It isn’t! Your feet are finely-tuned marvels of natural engineering. They deserve to be treated with care and respect so if you don’t already love your feet, start now. 12

Wearing appropriate and properly fitting footwear will go a long way to keeping your feet working properly (see the tips below). Women have four times as many foot problems as men because they are more likely to wear high heels and pointy toed shoes. I advise all female patients to limit wearing high heels and to wear flatter shoes, such as pumps, for the majority of the day. Everyone should avoid wearing the same pair of shoes every day by alternating between two or more pairs. Chiropractic adjustments of your feet - and elsewhere in your body as required - can restore function and relieve pain. As a result, other painful disorders elsewhere in your body, but stemming from or causing your foot problems, will also be relieved. In addition, at my clinic we examine patients to determine whether prescription shoe inserts (orthotics) will offer relief.

Generic one-size-fits-all orthotics are good for all but 15% of cases. If however you have tried off the shelf orthotics then prescription orthotics may be the way to go. They should fit more comfortably into your shoes and they are designed to support and improve the functioning of your individual feet. They work rather like the way braces work on your teeth: by exerting gentle and consistent pressure to bring foot muscles and bones back into proper alignment. If you suffer from heel spurs (plantar fasciitis) then orthotics are an ideal solution in 80 to 90 per cent of cases.

• Shop for shoes later in the day; feet tend to swell during the day and it’s best to be fitted while they are in that state. • Select a shoe with a leather upper, stiff heel counter, appropriate cushioning, and flexibility at the ball of the foot. • If you wear prescription orthotics, you should take them along to shoe fittings.. This article was provided by Spinal and Natural Healthcare Centre.

• Have your feet measured while you’re standing. For more information or visit www.spinalandnatural.co.uk • Always try on both shoes and walk around the shop. • Always buy for the larger foot; feet are seldom precisely the same size. • Don’t buy shoes that need a break-in period - shoes should be comfortable immediately.

112 Rushbottom Lane, Benfleet, SS7 4DW Tel: 01268 752123

• Don’t rely on the size of your last pair of shoes. Your feet do get larger.

Money Guidance Holistic Planning I

have written many articles on specific topics concerning Pensions, ISAs, Investments, Inheritance Tax, Life Assurance and other Financial Services products, but how do you bring all the various aspects of these products together to ensure you are maximising returns and minimising tax? At Joseph Lamb we use a single platform to hold client Investments. As well as greatly simplifying the on-going management of all these various plans and bringing the ‘product’ cost down, ISAs, Unit Trusts (or OEICS), Pension funds or Life Assurance Bonds and the holding of all these plans combining all these assets onto a single platform can give you portfolio valuations in a single consolidated report, enable you to manage the underlying investments very cost effectively, and maximise opportunities for managing any income or withdrawal requirements you may have in a very tax efficient manner. Let us look at the example of a retired couple, Mr & Mrs Client, who now need to draw on their pensions for income. Drawing their pensions is a “single” issue but by looking at their entire situation, financial advice can really add value. In addition to their pensions they have £500,000 in a mix of savings accounts and cash ISAs. Mr & Mrs Client have received Annuity figures from their pension provider indicating that Mr Client could receive £12,000pa and Mrs Client £5,000. With interest rates at historic and long lasting lows, they are aware that they need to take some degree of investment risk to generate returns for their retirement income. Our clients have no requirements for their Pensions to provide a lump sum. For our example I have assumed that over the long term the clients achieve investment returns in a ‘moderate’ risk portfolio of 4%pa and that they don’t want to purchase an Annuity with their pension funds due to the new Pension ‘Freedoms’. His State pension is £3,000 below his Income Tax allowance, and his wife’s is £6,000 below it. So combined they are able to take the opportunity to exploit the new Flexible Pension rules 14 18

and take pension withdrawals from the ‘taxable’ part of their Pensions of up to £9,000pa between them (their combined remaining Income Tax allowances) and with no requirement for a lump sum, they would also receive the ‘tax free cash’ part of their pension funds (25% of the fund) as part of their monthly income providing a further £3,000pa without any tax liability (effectively £12,000pa free of Income Tax). We can then look at their ISA funds. These are all in Cash ISAs and delivering virtually zero returns (acknowledging there is no investment risk to the capital). If transferred to an investment ISA held on the platform, we can use some of the investment returns to pay a monthly, tax free ‘income’. They held over £150,000 in ISAs so we recommended withdrawals at 3%pa to give some protection against investment fluctuations and inflation. This gave another £4,500pa, again with no income tax.

T i A t e i v £

T w r m ( i c h s r

B r m s

The tax treatment of other personal assets may affect the net income you will receive. Budgeting is therefore an important aspect to retirement. When someone first retires they are more likely to do more as opposed to when they reach their 80’s. This will have an impact on how much income you need throughout retirement. Their Cash deposits are also generating a near zero return. We used these to maximise their investment ISA allowance of a combined £30,480 for this year to generate a further £914 per annum of tax free withdrawals. After allowing for emergency Cash ‘contingency’ funds of £30,000 in Premium Bonds, invested the balance into a ‘Unit Trust’ portfolio. The clients each have an unused Capital Gains tax allowance of £11,000pa, and a tax free ‘Dividend Income’ allowance of £5000 per annum. By using these allowances via the Unit Trust portfolio we can pay further tax free withdrawals on a monthly basis as income to the clients. To avoid the possibility of Capital Gains or Dividend tax allowances being exceeded we limited the Unit Trust investment to £200,000 and take withdrawals again at 3% or £6000pa.

The investment platform we use permits a further investment product to be utilised in the form of a Life Assurance ‘Bond’. These have their own peculiar tax treatment, which whilst too lengthy to describe here, essentially allows another source of tax ‘deferred income’, and if held in a special Offshore Trust can be very effective at mitigating Inheritance Tax. In this case £150,000 generates £4,500pa. This creates a total ‘income’ stream of £43,500pa without any Income Tax! Of course the investment returns need to at least equal to the withdrawals to maintain capital values, but in our view this is achievable (although not guaranteed) without taking high levels of investment risk. Tax rates will change and the investment climate may change, but because all of these plans are held on one platform, managing income or investment switches is highly automated and simple. Consolidated reports and tax statements are all produced for simplicity. By using this holistic advice approach to investing you really stay in control of your assets and maximise as many tax free opportunities as possible and with a sensible choice of investments you should be able to

generate the return needed to protect your capital from the erosion, it will certainly suffer if left in Cash deposits. By only drawing sensible levels of ‘income’, you will have the potential to grow the Capital, protect against inflation and potentially grow your income through the years if required. All the underlying investments we use are ‘liquid’, can be readily traded or sold and are made via UK regulated products. As well as maximising legitimate tax allowances the Pensions and Offshore Bond will also benefit from preferential treatment for Inheritance Tax. We can provide advice on all aspects of such an arrangement and have a long track record of successfully manging retirement portfolios in this way. Whilst the figures in this example may not apply to you, the concept does, and we would be happy to look at any size portfolio to see how we may be able to help maximise your retirement income. Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER)

Run by a facilitator, the sessions offer a chance to ask questions, get information and share experiences in a safe and supportive environment. This service is for carers of people with dementia only and you will need to be referred. For more information call 01268 415914 (Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm). Luncheon club The luncheon club provides an opportunity to meet old friends and to make new ones, whilst having fun over a meal. It is based at the Salvation Army Day Centre, Glendale Gardens, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 2AR. The food is prepared on site by a cook and kitchen assistant of the Salvation Army. For dates, times and more details call 01702 478092.

Rayleigh & Rochford Association of Voluntary Services Latest Volunteering Opportunities

I

f you are looking to do some voluntary work in the local area this year, the Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services has a whole host of opportunities available. Here are just a few: Volunteer Group Support The Rayleigh Peer Support group for the Alzheimers Society gives carers an opportunity to get together in an informal setting to discuss their issues. The group is facilitated by a member of staff who guides the carers to ensure that their discussions are centred on living well with dementia. Volunteers help to provide a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, to encourage people to join in with the activities and to socialise. No formal qualifications are needed for this role. However, it is important that volunteers are able to talk to people and listen, empathise and reassure people, join in with activities and encourage others to take part in the activities and socialise.

A Very Good Back Seat Driver The Multiple Sclerosis Society are looking for volunteers to assist the driver getting members from their homes to attend their clubs in Rochford, either by car or by bus. The main activities are providing the members with events to socialise and interact, raffles, bingo, quizzes, zumbability, sailing and short mat bowls. Other activities are to be added in time. Volunteers must have a sense of humour and most importantly patience and understanding. Good communication skills and common sense are all required. For more information of these volunteering opportunities and many others in the local area, contact the Rayleigh, Rochford and District Association of Voluntary Services at: 105a High Street, Rayleigh, SS6 7QA or call 01268 772796. Email: rravs@rravs.org.uk. Further details are also available at www.rravs.org.uk

Museum Steward Rayleigh Town Museum are looking for stewards to meet & greet visitors, show them around the museum, answer any questions and general supervision of those visiting. The Museum will be open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 10am - 4pm and the the stewards will be required to volunteer for at least 1 shift per week (10am - 1pm or 1pm - 4pm). There may also be special evening events running that may require Stewards. In house training is provided. An interest in local history would be beneficial, but not essential. 24
