Welcome A warm welcome to the January 2018 edition of the Rayleigh Local Business Guide and we would like to wish all of our readers and advertisers a very Happy New Year! In our regular ‘What’s On in Rayleigh’ section on page 16 we feature the Rayleigh Toy and Model Train Collectors Show, a 60’s and 70’s Quiz Night and a local Rayleigh Philatelic Society Meeting. Down at Acres Way kennels we are pleased to report that Monty the Giant Schnauzer is currently doing well. He had to revisit the Animal Health Trust as he was still a little lame on his right hand side. He’s had some additional scans which look okay thankfully and he appears to be making good progress. We’ll keep you updated on his progress. Both Lexi the Staff and Sasha the Siberian Husky that we featured last time have both found loving new homes. Unfortunately Jerry the Labrador / Husky is still at Acres Way looking for a new home and we feature him again this month. We also feature 2 more deserving dogs this month who are looking for loving homes (pages 10 & 11). In our Community feature this month we introduce you to Rayleigh Brass (page 6), a local band that have been performing in concert and at charity events for almost 100 years. Also we feature an article about the local services provided by the Alzeimer’s Society (page 21). We also have our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages). This month he provides an analysis of the recent budget. If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Castle Point or Rayleigh guides then please get in touch at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you are a local business and would like to advertise in the Guide, then please contact our salesperson Ricky on 01375 402546 who will give you a no obligation quote. It really is a cost effective way of promoting your business and generating business from your local community.

Rayleigh Brass Band R

ayleigh has had its own brass band for almost 100 years and has undergone many name changes. These have included the Rayleigh Mission Band, Rayleigh Brass Band, Rayleigh Town Band, and Rayleigh and District Silver Band. The name “Rayleigh Brass” was adopted in the early 1980s. Today’s group of players are enthusiastic amateur musicians who are able to put on a first class concert performance, as well as provide music for a variety of functions including school fêtes, garden parties and civic occasions. The band has had an eventful history. In the early 1920s the band performed regularly on summer evenings in Rayleigh High Street retreating to the local hostelries in the winter months. The players were accompanied by a local character known as Singer Nash, who would make a couple of musical offerings to the patrons, and pass a hat round to swell the band coffers. At this time the band rehearsed at Charlie Smith’s builders shed in Bull Lane and the proprietor was permitted to sit in with the bandsmen and play his clarinet.

Uniforms were acquired around this time, purchased second hand from Thurrock Band. These were replaced in 1934 by new, made to measure garments. With the outbreak of the Second World War the band folded, but re-formed as a casual group shortly afterwards. The band flourished until the early 1950s when financial problems forced the organisation to be disbanded again. Nearly a decade passed before the band’s history continued. In June 1961 a meeting of the Urban District Council of Rayleigh was held where the re-forming the Rayleigh Town Band was agreed. Rayleigh Brass acknowledges its role in the community, and has raised funds in the past for BBC Children in Need and local hospitals, and is always willing to consider appearing at charity fund-raising events. They have also introduced a training band where anyone (not just youngsters) can pick up a brass instrument and experience playing in a brass band. You can find out more information about Rayleigh Brass on their website www.rayleighbrass.com

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour.

Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identifiction showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee.Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.

Re-Homing Update We are pleased to say that Lexi the Staff and Sasha the Siberian Husky are now settled and happy in their new homes. Unfortunately Jerry the Labrador/Husky is still with Acres Way and we are re-featuring him in the hope that we find him a new home.

Monty Update Monty is doing well. He has had to go back to the Animal Health Trust as he was still a little lame on his right side. He’s had some additional scans which all look ok thankfully and appears to be making good progress.

Money Guidance Autumn Budget

In the latest budget, very little has changed for most people, which is a good thing because the position for investors is generally very good in the UK. Individuals are able to build up significant wealth in tax efficient ways to secure their future. The main changes in this Budget concern some small increases to allowances from April 2018, starting with an increase in the personal allowance to £11,850. This is the amount that can be earned before tax is paid. In addition, the threshold for higher rate tax is being increased to £46,350. Those receiving a State Pension will gain a 3% rise in April 2018 – a cash increase of £3.65 per week for the full Basic State Pension.

Investments The current ISA subscription limit is being maintained at £20,000 per person. This means a couple can invest up to £40,000 per year in these tax privileged investments. Remember, the growth within an ISA is tax free, they can be accessed at any time and the money saved in an ISA can be used to generate tax free income. For those making investments that are subject to Capital Gains Tax, the annual exemption is rising to £11,700. Gains within this amount are tax free, and if investing jointly this means a couple can generate gains of £23,400 per year without paying tax. There are a range of investments available that benefit from this taxation treatment and we typically advise their use once you have used up your ISA subscription for the year. Last year the Government announced that the Dividend Tax Allowance, currently £5,000, would reduce to £2,000. Dividends above this are then chargeable at 7.5%, 32.5% or 38.1% for basic, higher or additional rate tax payers respectively. If this is a concern, you may wish to consider taking advice on restructuring your portfolio 14

to reduce the level of dividends or using other investment products that are not subject to this tax. If you are a business owner, take care over your Dividend extraction!

Pensions Pensions remain largely untouched by the Budget, meaning they remain an extremely tax efficient way to save for the future, especially remembering how flexible they now are. Those with adjusted income below £150,000 can contribute up to £40,000 per annum, and utilise any unused allowance from the previous 3 years. Contributions made to Pensions receive tax relief. For example, a personal contribution of £10,000 would only cost £8,000 as tax relief makes up the difference. If you are a higher or additional rate tax payer further relief is available at either 20% or 25%, so for a higher rate tax payer a £10,000 Pension contribution would cost just £6,000. Contributions made from a business are equally tax efficient as they do not attract any tax lability for the individual and the company receives corporation tax relief on the contribution. In retirement Pensions can be accessed in full at any time, with 25% of this tax free and they can be passed on in the event of your death, very tax efficiently. If this makes Pensions sound good, it is because they are. Like for like they are the best place for your savings and they should form a key part of everyone’s financial planning. Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER) This article does not constitute advice and readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article. The value of investments can go down as well as up and past performance is not a guide to future returns.
