Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey

Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the

home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Barney the Labradoodle and Stitch the Lurcher that we featured in our last issue have both been successfully re-homed. Stitch is now living in Wales! Boycie the Staff however is still looking for a loving home.

Money Guidance N

ow that the dust is settling on the much lauded new Pensions Flexibilities, what have our experiences been? The media were whipping up a ‘cash’ frenzy encouraging all to access their pensions and go on a spending spree. We have found that whilst there has been a huge increase in the requests to access smaller pension pots, most can see the wisdom in retaining their pension fund intact , to use it for what it was intended for- living in retirement! It is sad that many cannot see that a significant part of their later lives will be blighted by simply not having enough income, and that in all the ‘noise’ around the new rules the primary purpose of pensions has been forgotten- namely to be able to live comfortably when you stop work. The primary purpose apart, recent experiences highlight just how advantageous pensions are now, and the media are now talking about getting as much money into pension rather than extracting it! Anything to fill a page........ I should remind you why withdrawing all your pension is probably a bad idea- Income Tax. If you haven’t accessed any of your pension yet the first 25% is tax free, the remainder is taxed as income. If your pension provider has not previously paid you any benefits the chances are they will use an emergency tax code and tax 75% of your fund at 40%! Whilst you could reclaim any over payment this will take time and involve tax returns. So beware, if withdrawing you may get less than you expect! Let me assume that you still want the withdrawal and are happy to pay the tax, then you must consider what you are going to do with the money? I have had clients say they want to access it just so they can get at it if they need it? This makes no sense as the new rules permit you to access it any time, so why pay tax now if you can access the fund when needed? In addition whilst the funds are in your pension they may be subject to some investment risk but they should in the current climate have more chance of growth than if removed and left languishing in the bank, and the growth is free of Tax! So unless you are retiring in the truest sense, or need to use the money for a something specific it makes no sense to draw the pension. It should also be remembered that whilst it is retained in a

14

pension it is in most circumstances free of Inheritance Tax on your death. Many clients have told me they intend to make a withdrawal and buy other investments. This makes little sense. One person approached me who was going to pay 42% tax on his withdrawal (because of it’s size) so his new investment would have to more than double to get back to where he is already! Much of this is very misguided and is driven by simple misunderstanding of the returns, flexibilities and tax benefits of pensions. It is vital you seek advice before withdrawing your funds. Now consider that if you are still working, in middle age, and you are saving for the rainy day, why would you not put as much as you can into pensions? You can access it if needed after the age of 55, you get tax relief at your marginal rates on contributions up to £40,000 pa if you have enough earnings, and the growth is free from tax, the fund is exempt from IHT and 25 % of the future value can be paid to you tax free! If you have the income to justify it and you are in your 50s why not turn your ISAs into pensions? You would get your ISA value grossed up by your marginal tax rate, even a basic rate tax payer would turn their £10,000 ISA into £12,500 overnight by doing so, and you would still have full access, tax free growth, no IHT and the tax on withdrawal will be less than the relief when withdrawn, so you are making money from the tax man! Again this is an area where a little bit of advice from a qualified experienced professional will reap rewards. At Joseph Lamb we have 45 years experience in helping people manage these issues and we will be only to pleased to help you.

Southend Community Southend Citizen of the Year 2015

D

o you know an individual or group who has made an outstanding contribution to the community? An unsung hero who has performed an act of kindness? Or, someone who just needs to be recognised for being noble? The Citizen of Southend Award is back for its eighth year giving you the chance to nominate a local hero. The award is designed to celebrate an outstanding contribution within the community by an individual or group of people, aged between 8 and 80 years old. As well as the prestigious title, winner of the ‘Gold’ award will be presented with a personalised trophy and a £500 Cash prize. Winner of the ‘Silver’ award will also receive a trophy and a £300 cash prize. The ‘Bronze’ winner will receive a trophy and £100. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony in the autumn. This award scheme gives you the chance to nominate someone who lives, works and contributes to the community in the Southend Borough who you think

16

should receive the ‘Citizen of Southend’ title. For example, you may know someone who in the last 12 months: • has demonstrated courage and bravery • has contributed to the community • helps or cares for the disadvantaged • has set up or leads projects that benefit the community • has made an outstanding achievement in health, education, social or community work, sport, environment or the arts • promotes equality and eliminating discrimination These are just some ideas but it’s your award and any valid nominee you wish to nominate will be considered! For more information and to download a nomination form please visit www.citizenofsouthend.co.uk. The photo below shows last year’s winners.

Southend History The Palace Hotel

T

he Palace Hotel was opened in 1904 and was originally called “The Metropole”. It was once the only 5 star hotel on the southeast coast and had 200 bedrooms, a billiard room and a magnificent ballroom. During during World War One, several buildings in Southend-on-Sea were converted into hospitals including The Palace Hotel. It became the Queen Mary Royal Naval Hospital and treated over 4,000 soldiers during the war. As they recovered from their injuries, the soldiers would gather on the balconies of the hotel to look out over the pier and seafront. They became something of an attraction, with dozens of people gathering underneath to pass tobacco, sweets, flowers and even buttons up to the soldiers. Funds were raised through a series of “Gift Days” when a VIP guest would attend to receive gifts which were then auctioned off. The VIPs were often royalty – and in June 1915, Queen Mary herself was the guest of honour.

24

In 1952, Laurel and Hardy stayed at The Palace with their wives whilst performing at the Odeon Cinema in the High Street. During the 1950s & 1960s the Palace fell behind with the times and eventually came into financial difficulties. It was then bought by Polish refugee Motel Burstin who turned the building into an old people’s home. In the early 1970s the Palace provided cut price bed and breakfast but by now the building was beginning to fall into disrepair. During the 90s and the early 2000s eastern European asylum seekers and local homeless people took up residence in the rooms, until the building was finally closed and gutted in 2005. The Palace has now been transformed into a plush modern hotel with wonderful refurbishment to the interior and retaining the distinct character externally. It has been renamed the Park Inn Palace. In memory of it’s famous guests in 1952, the hotel have named 2 adjoining function rooms, the Stan Laurel and The Oliver Hardy Rooms.
