Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey

Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Southend History Southend Carnival

S

graced by the attendance of the Southend Carnival Queen and her court.

Since that first year, when it consisted mainly of horsedrawn floats, the procession has always been the key to Carnival. In 1923 a one-day event was added. This, and the events that followed during the next few years, were so successful that in 1926 the Southend-on-Sea Carnival Association was formed.

During the war years the Carnival was put on hold and the Carnival Association worked instead to help the British Service men and women. The Carnival returned to Southend in 1946 with a one-day event at the Kursaal Amusement Park and in 1947 it was business as usual and Carnival Week was reinstated. Between 1946 and the end of the 1960s Southend Carnival raised over £90,000 for Southend Hospitals and many other charitable institutions in the borough. This included, in the 1950s, the setting up the Carnival Estate for the aged poor in Leigh-on-Sea, which the charity still owns and operates today.

outhend’s Carnival was first held in 1906, when it was part of the annual regatta. It has always been dedicated to raising money for the town’s charities, and was created exclusively to raise funds for the Southend Victoria Cottage Hospital in Warrior Square.

By 1930, the Carnival had become a full week of events and was now raising funds for the proposed new General Hospital. There was something for all the family to take part in including the children’s Fancy Dress Parade, Beautiful Toddlers competition, circus and fete in Chalkwell Park, a dog show, Beautiful Legs parade, daylight procession on Wednesday and torchlight procession on the final day of Carnival. Every event was

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the

home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Mouse the Greyhound and Murphy the Crossbreed that we featured in our last issue have both been successfully re-homed.

Money Guidance N

ow that the dust is settling on the much lauded new Pensions Flexibilities, what have our experiences been? The media were whipping up a ‘cash’ frenzy encouraging all to access their pensions and go on a spending spree. We have found that whilst there has been a huge increase in the requests to access smaller pension pots, most can see the wisdom in retaining their pension fund intact , to use it for what it was intended for- living in retirement! It is sad that many cannot see that a significant part of their later lives will be blighted by simply not having enough income, and that in all the ‘noise’ around the new rules the primary purpose of pensions has been forgotten- namely to be able to live comfortably when you stop work. The primary purpose apart, recent experiences highlight just how advantageous pensions are now, and the media are now talking about getting as much money into pension rather than extracting it! Anything to fill a page........ I should remind you why withdrawing all your pension is probably a bad idea- Income Tax. If you haven’t accessed any of your pension yet the first 25% is tax free, the remainder is taxed as income. If your pension provider has not previously paid you any benefits the chances are they will use an emergency tax code and tax 75% of your fund at 40%! Whilst you could reclaim any over payment this will take time and involve tax returns. So beware, if withdrawing you may get less than you expect! Let me assume that you still want the withdrawal and are happy to pay the tax, then you must consider what you are going to do with the money? I have had clients say they want to access it just so they can get at it if they need it? This makes no sense as the new rules permit you to access it any time, so why pay tax now if you can access the fund when needed? In addition whilst the funds are in your pension they may be subject to some investment risk but they should in the current climate have more chance of growth than if removed and left languishing in the bank, and the growth is free of Tax! So unless you are retiring in the truest sense, or need to use the money for a something specific it makes no sense to draw the pension. It should also be remembered that whilst it is retained in a

14

pension it is in most circumstances free of Inheritance Tax on your death. Many clients have told me they intend to make a withdrawal and buy other investments. This makes little sense. One person approached me who was going to pay 42% tax on his withdrawal (because of it’s size) so his new investment would have to more than double to get back to where he is already! Much of this is very misguided and is driven by simple misunderstanding of the returns, flexibilities and tax benefits of pensions. It is vital you seek advice before withdrawing your funds. Now consider that if you are still working, in middle age, and you are saving for the rainy day, why would you not put as much as you can into pensions? You can access it if needed after the age of 55, you get tax relief at your marginal rates on contributions up to £40,000 pa if you have enough earnings, and the growth is free from tax, the fund is exempt from IHT and 25 % of the future value can be paid to you tax free! If you have the income to justify it and you are in your 50s why not turn your ISAs into pensions? You would get your ISA value grossed up by your marginal tax rate, even a basic rate tax payer would turn their £10,000 ISA into £12,500 overnight by doing so, and you would still have full access, tax free growth, no IHT and the tax on withdrawal will be less than the relief when withdrawn, so you are making money from the tax man! Again this is an area where a little bit of advice from a qualified experienced professional will reap rewards. At Joseph Lamb we have 45 years experience in helping people manage these issues and we will be only to pleased to help you.

Southend History Prittlewell Priory

P

rittlewell Priory is a medieval priory that was founded in the 12th century, by monks from the Cluniac Priory of St Pancras. It was one of the lesser monasteries housing not more than 18 monks. The Cluniac Monks were rarely allowed to speak so they created a sign language to help with everyday life. It passed into private hands at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. In 1842 Daniel Robert Scratton inherited the Priory. Together with his wife, Maria, he renovated the buildings to provide a comfortable home. However, the couple moved to Devon in the 1860s and it was only when William Howell Scratton purchased the Priory in 1887 that it truly became a family home. The family created a walled kitchen garden, which originally had hot houses and a melon pit. This was on the site of the monks’ burial ground. Today, it is an ornamental garden.

when the Refectory was restored and partly rebuilt. A number of original features do survive, including a 12th Century doorway with chevron and dog tooth ornamentation. The last private owner, R. A. Jones, gave the priory and the grounds to the local council. The grounds now form a public park, Priory Park. You can discover more about the fascinating world of the Monks of Prittlewell by joining one of the Priory’s Saturday afternoon tours in August. The tours start at 2.30pm and tickets cost £3.90 each (£2.90 children and concessions). You can call the number below to reserve a place or simply turn up on the day (every Saturday until 29th August). For more information call 01702 212190 or visit www.southendmuseums.co.uk.

In 1536 much of the building was destroyed and what remained was much altered during the 18th Century. Alterations were made again in the early 20th Century,
