Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey
Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the
home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Tonka the French Bulldog/Staff cross that we featured in our last issue has been successfully re-homed. Unfortunately Boycie the Staff and Harry the Chihuahua are still yet to find loving homes.

Money Guidance I
f you do own your own Limited Company and have been paying yourself through dividends the chances are that you are going to be much worse off once next year’s Dividend Tax changes come into effect. At the moment you will pay Corporation Tax on your profits, currently at 20% of your profit. Any profit left after the Corporation tax charge can be paid as a dividend and as you own all or part of the company this tax charge is currently treated as if it is paying your basic rate tax on the dividend, so if your dividend, added to any salary( plus a nominal grossing up of 10%) falls under the Higher Rate tax threshold there is no extra personal tax to pay. If your total gross dividend and exceeds the Higher rate there is a 22.5% tax charge due personally, and if your earnings exceed £150,000 then 27.5 % is due. This is very effective and is a true dividend due to business owners to help offset the stresses and strains of running a business. Unfortunately this is about to change. With effect from April 6th 2016 there is effectively no credit for the Corporation Tax paid, instead only the first £5,000 of dividends are treated specially and are tax free. Any dividend over this up to the Higher rate is now taxed at 7.5%, and over the Higher rate at 32.5% and additional rate at 38.1%! This will result in much higher personal tax bills for the majority of business owners and action is needed to now minimise its impact for next year. You should of course discuss this with your accountant as soon as possible as leaving it until April will simply be too late. What can you do about it? Well first of all you should consider drawing more dividends now if the business has the cash to support the payment. We have seen that many well run firms have actually been building cash following the crisis of 2008, but that it is languishing in a bank account earning next to nothing and once accumulated business owners are fearful of drawing due to the personal tax charge. This is going to go up significantly so it may well be worth drawing it now! An alternative would be to fund pensions for shareholding employees. The new pension flexibilities mean that if you are over 55 you can fund your pension from the business and still access the pension if you needed the money. If you are under 55 you need to be sure that you will not need it until you are 55, but in both cases the tax benefits are significant. A Company can pay up to £40,000 per 14
person in pension contributions in the current year plus the balance of any used allowance from the previous three tax years. The pension contribution is deducted from your profit when you file your accounts so will not attract any corporation tax. It will attract no National Insurance charge and no personal tax charge. It is the only legitimate way of drawing money from your business without incurring any tax on the payment and if over 55 and you needed the money the tax saving means you will be better off if you paid yourself ‘through’ the pension than if you took a dividend! Any investment returns from the pension are tax free in the majority of cases, you can access all or part of the fund from 55, 25% of the fund is tax free and if held to retirement you will almost certainly be a lower rate tax payer when you draw the taxable part of the fund than when you were contributing. The pension fund can also be passed on without any capital tax on death and there is no need to ever buy an annuity, you can hold the fund until you die and pass it on very tax efficiently. Under these new rules Pensions are not really pensions at all any more, they are simply very tax efficient investments accounts that can only be accessed after 55. Now consider that if you are still working, in middle age, and you are saving for the rainy day, why would you not put as much as you can into pensions? You can access it if needed after the age of 55, you get tax relief at your marginal rates on contributions up to £40,000 pa if you have enough earnings, and the growth is free from tax, the fund is exempt from IHT and 25 % of the future value can be paid to you tax free! BUT! You must act now as the Chancellor has seen that many would use pensions to avoid the higher Divided tax and from next April the ability to fund pensions from your own business will be severely limited. Here at Joseph Lamb we will be only too happy to work with you and your accountant to effect a plan to beat the taxman before April. Call us or email us now to arrange a free initial consultation. The History of Ekco in Southend In the early 1960s, one in five television sets purchased in Britain were made by EKCO in Southend. The company’s founder Eric Kirkham Cole was born on 4 July 1901 at Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea and was educated at Southend Day Technical School, followed by a three-year apprenticeship. Cole and his future wife Muriel Bradshaw started out making radio sets in 1924. His kitchen table business would go on to defend Britain from Nazi invasion and became an international brand designing the must-have gadgets of the day.
The Beginning William Streatfield Verrells, a schoolmaster and freelance journalist from Southend-on-Sea, wrote an article in a local newspaper asking if it was possible to power a radio set from the mains electricity supply rather than batteries. Cole saw a possible business opportunity and set about building his battery eliminator, which he later demonstrated to Verrells. Suitably impressed, Verrells joined Cole in a business venture, with Cole manufacturing the battery eliminators, and Verrells marketing them. In 1926 a private company E.K. Cole Ltd was formed with Verrells as chairman and Cole as vice-chairman. With the extra funding that was raised, the company set up a new factory at Leigh-on-Sea in 1927. After further expansion E.K. Cole Ltd became a public limited company in 1930, and moved to a spacious new factory at Southend-on-Sea. The company also began to concentrate on the manufacture of mains powered radios rather than battery eliminators which were becoming obsolete. Ekco launched its first car radio at the 1934 Radiolympia exhibition. Another important development for the company was the introduction of bakelite cabinets for its radios.

World War 2 Before the start of the Second World War the Government decided to disperse certain production to locations away from obvious bombing targets. This led to Ekco opening a factory in Wiltshire and subsequently Aylesbury, Woking, Preston, and Rutherglen. The wartime headquarters of Ekco was based at Aston Clinton House in Buckinghamshire. Following the outbreak of war, the Southend-on-Sea factory was evacuated apart from the bakelite moulding shop whose large moulding presses could not be moved easily. Less than a year later, the empty factory was re-equipped to make wiring looms for aircraft such as the Avro Lancaster. During the war, EKCO played a vital role in the birth of radar, developing tactical radar for the V-bombers, groundbreaking military and civilian airport and airborne radar systems, as well as vital equipment for the medical and
nuclear industries. EKCO even provided the technology behind Britain’s first guided missile. Post War Years By 1945, EKCO had over 8,000 people working for it across various sites making mains and portable TV’s, mains and portable radios, radiograms, tape recorders, Car Radios, Electric Heaters, thermovent heaters, Electric Blankets, plastic Toilet Seats, various plastic utensils, plastic bathroom fittings and ‘Superbath’ babybaths. In 1947, the company introduced the Wireless Set No. 88 VHF man-pack transceiver for use by the British Army. During the 1950s, the company produced a number of military radar systems including the ARI 5820 ranging radar for the Hawker Hunter. EKCO also supplied weather radars for a variety of civil aircraft the E390/564 weather radar for the Concorde.
