Southend Community SAVS wins Heritage Lottery Fund support

S

outhend Association of Voluntary Services (SAVS) has received a £49,500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Volunteeringon-Sea in Southend-on-Sea. Volunteering-on-Sea has been created by young people and will be delivered by them so they can explore and share the heritage of volunteering in Southend, an historic seaside town. Some 20 young people will collect oral histories from organisations who use volunteers to support people on Southend Seafront or who use the seafront to support their work. This will then create an exhibition which will travel across Southend showing the journey of 16 volunteer experiences over the last 125 years.

8

Commenting on the award, Alison Semmence, SAVS Chief Executive Officer said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the young people are very keen to look into the History of Volunteering in Southend and are delighted that the HLF see the potential of the project.” Robyn Llewellyn, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund, East of England, said: “The Volunteering-on-Sea project will provide a fantastic opportunity for young people in Southend to discover the history of volunteering in their local area. Thanks to National Lottery players, the Southend Association of Voluntary Services will be able to support young people in this project, and organise an exhibition to share the findings across Southend.”

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2

or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update Sadly Luna the lurcher cross staff, Jack the lurcher and Rosco the staff that we featured in our last issue are still looking for new homes. This month we feature 3 new dogs looking for their “Forever Homes”.

Money Guidance

How much is enough to live on in retirement? D

eciding how much money you need to live on in retirement can be tricky. Actually stating what is ‘enough’ is difficult as circumstances change over time. Starting with the least amount is where to begin, which usually constitutes all necessary bills to be paid for i.e. housing, food, utilities and clothes. Thereafter there will be expenses for socialising, travel, goods and services. A recent study showed that for a single person, a weekly income of £270 is needed and for a pensioner couple it is £348. This equates to an annual range of approximately £14,000 to £18,000. To provide £14,000 from a fund with an assumed return of 5% per annum would mean a pension pot of roughly £280,000 is required. Most people don’t have that as the UK average is nearer £50,000 to £60,000. This means that the required income will need to come from other sources such as State Pension (£151.25 a week for retirees from April 2016) and other assets such as savings. If we again assume that the State Pension will provide £7,000, the rest of the £14,000 will need to come from other assets. Let’s say that the £50,000 pension provides £2,500 per annum (5% return) we still need £4,500. If this were to be taken from the pension pot as further drawdown, it would mean that the pot would need to grow at 14% per year just to stand still! Other things also need to be considered such as ensuring that the income doesn’t dry up. This may lead to a decision to purchase an annuity. Is the growth / return rate sustainable? What if the fund is invested in the wrong sector or product? If you have an investment property, what happens if there is an extended void period for the rental? Also what if you

14

need to sell the property for other reasons? This would create a shortfall in the rental and therefore income. The tax treatment of other personal assets may affect the net income you will receive. Budgeting is therefore an important aspect to retirement. When someone first retires they are more likely to do more as opposed to when they reach their 80’s. This will have an impact on how much income you need throughout retirement. A lot of people will need more than the £14,000 per year in retirement and if you rely on the State to make up the shortfall, then you are in for a rude awakening. The recent pension reforms that came into effect in April 2015 were a clear message from the Government that people need to start taking ownership of their pension and retirement provision. What income is needed during retirement will be forever fluid due to changing circumstances and health of the retiree. Perhaps it would be prudent to start thinking about how to budget for the desired retirement income way, way, way before you hang up your boots!! As always, a little bit of advice from a qualified, experienced professional can improve your finances and help you avoid the pitfalls. Health and Wellbeing Live Life Feet First

Feet can be plagued with many fungal and bacterial problems as well as symptoms of more serious conditions such as diabetes but I want to draw your attention to importance of properly functioning feet. The most obvious symptoms of foot trouble are pain and dysfunction (limping, favouring one foot or the other, inability to put weight on the heel and/or the toes). Pain and dysfunction caused by illness or injury can force you change your gait (the way you walk) and create significant stresses on the joints of your legs, hips and lower spine. Your feet are the foundation for your entire body. When they suffer, your whole body is placed in jeopardy. Even without pain, foot dysfunction can cause your whole body to overcompensate, which can lead to back pain and even headache, not to mention the emotional stress of discomfort and limitations on movement that can spread from the feet upward.

T

he health and function of your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. A quarter of the bones in your body are in your feet. Simply walking can produce more pressure than the sum of your body weight. The average person walks more than four times the circumference of the globe in their lifetime. Many patients at the Spinal and Natural Healthcare Centre think that foot discomfort and pain is a normal. It isn’t! Your feet are finely-tuned marvels of natural engineering. They deserve to be treated with care and respect so if you don’t already love your feet, start now. 16

Wearing appropriate and properly fitting footwear will go a long way to keeping your feet working properly (see the tips below). Women have four times as many foot problems as men because they are more likely to wear high heels and pointy toed shoes. I advise all female patients to limit wearing high heels and to wear flatter shoes, such as pumps, for the majority of the day. Everyone should avoid wearing the same pair of shoes every day by alternating between two or more pairs. Chiropractic adjustments of your feet - and elsewhere in your body as required - can restore function and relieve pain. As a result, other painful disorders elsewhere in your body, but stemming from or causing your foot problems, will also be relieved. In addition, at my clinic we examine patients to determine whether prescription shoe inserts (orthotics) will offer relief.

to advertise in the next issue of The Local Business Guide call: 01375 402 546

Generic one-size-fits-all orthotics are good for all but 15% of cases. If however you have tried off the shelf orthotics then prescription orthotics may be the way to go. They should fit more comfortably into your shoes and they are designed to support and improve the functioning of your individual feet. They work rather like the way braces work on your teeth: by exerting gentle and consistent pressure to bring foot muscles and bones back into proper alignment. If you suffer from heel spurs (plantar fasciitis) then orthotics are an ideal solution in 80 to 90 per cent of cases.

• Shop for shoes later in the day; feet tend to swell during the day and it’s best to be fitted while they are in that state. • Select a shoe with a leather upper, stiff heel counter, appropriate cushioning, and flexibility at the ball of the foot. • If you wear prescription orthotics, you should take them along to shoe fittings.. This article was provided by Spinal and Natural Healthcare Centre.

• Have your feet measured while you’re standing. For more information or visit www.spinalandnatural.co.uk • Always try on both shoes and walk around the shop. • Always buy for the larger foot; feet are seldom precisely the same size. • Don’t buy shoes that need a break-in period - shoes should be comfortable immediately.

112 Rushbottom Lane, Benfleet, SS7 4DW Tel: 01268 752123

• Don’t rely on the size of your last pair of shoes. Your feet do get larger.

I

f you are looking to do some voluntary work in the local area this year, the Southend Association of Voluntary Services has a whole host of opportunities available, here are just a few: Help the Homeless at Harvest Time Extra donations at Harvest time are received for homeless people so help is needed by a local charity to collect and sort them. Volunteers are needed on Monday, Tuesday and Friday evenings and weekend mornings and afternoons. If you care about the plight of homeless people, can empathise; and if you are fairly strong and able to lift boxes- then this charity would really appreciate your help. Pennies for Paws Would you like to support a local animal charity? Their Eastwood Charity Shop needs reliable volunteers to help out. There’s plenty to be getting on with including sorting donations, tidying the shop and helping customers there’s something for everyone. It’s great experience as well as a chance to meet new people and all for a worthwhile cause. If you can spare a Tuesday or Saturday morning or afternoon or a Friday afternoon please get in touch.

visits local people who have volunteered over the last few decades and records their stories using digital recording equipment. Training will be given. It offers a fascinating insight into Southend’s history and a chance to use or develop your research and technology skills. One World This is a terrific opportunity for friendly and outgoing people to be part of one of Southend’s biggest events celebrating and bringing together our diverse community. No qualifications are needed other than a helpful personality and willingness to get stuck in, helping people find their way around or providing information. Any time you can spare between 10am and 6pm on Sunday 18th September would really help. For more information of these volunteering opportunities and many others in the local area, contact the Southend Assoctiation of Voluntary Services at: SAVS Centre, 29-31 Alexandra Street, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, SS1 1BW or call 01702 356000.
