5 Key Skin Care

Essentials

The goal of a skin care regimen is to not only keep your skin healthy and moisturized but to bring balance to our skin’s unique chemistry. The problem arises when faced with the plethora of products available – each promising to work miracles. Where do you begin?

UNVEIL A BRIGHTER LOOK 01

Exfoliator Cleansing your face with a gentle exfoliator is an essential first step. Cleaning your face will remove bacteria your face is harboring from a day out in the elements or sleeping on your pillow. You should use your fingers to wash your face – or at most, a soft washcloth. Brushes and tools can damage your skin, and in some cases, reintroduce bacteria to your face.

04

Growth factor Growth factor products stimulate the production of collagen and epidermal skin-cell production. This treats a host of aging problems from wrinkles and dark spots to lack of firmness and sagging.

PL AY IT CO OL 02

Retinoic acid Your skin makes this substance from Vitamin A, and when used in creams and ointment, helps cells to grow and develop. Retinoic acid can treat acne and slow the signs of aging. PL AY IT CO OL

The Gift of Being

Present

“In today’s rush, we all think too much, seek too much, want too much and forget the joy of just Being.” –Eckhart Tolle

A new year is a new beginning, a fresh start, 365 days of blank slate. If you are of the female gender, however, you may be starting the year feeling more like Scrooge than Santa. As the festivities draw to a close, I hear many women lament on how exhausted they are from the planning, shopping, decorating and cooking. The holiday expectations and to-do lists have squeezed the joy out of the experience. If this feels familiar, don’t despair. While memories are still fresh, January is the perfect time to deliberately plan the next holiday season or social gathering. If you aren’t sure how to put the fun back into your celebration, try the tips below: GET CRYSTAL CLEAR. Take some time and decide what matters most to you about the holiday you celebrate. What do you want the holiday season to look like? You can do this solo or incorporate family members. Pick three main things and put the majority of your time and energy there. If you love to bake, decorate and throw parties, then focus mainly on those activities. Get help with anything you don’t do well or don’t enjoy. If there is a family tradition that you just aren’t loving, consider replacing it with a new one. Stay focused on the reason for the season to avoid overwhelm. MAKE TIME FOR YOU. Calm your mind by: booking a facial, getting outside, deep breathing or sticking with your regular exercise routine. Schedule time to

replenish your own reserves and simply “be.” Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential during the holiday frenzy. Once you have recharged, you are better prepared to take care of those you love and truly enjoy the festivities. Note: resentment is almost always due to a lack of self-care. GIVE BACK. Giving to others is at the heart of the holidays. Planning a volunteer activity can reduce stress, model desired behavior for the kids and help the community. Focusing on other people will take you away from your own concerns, put the craziness in perspective and leave you with a big dose of gratitude. FIND THE HUMOR. The holidays are about giving and receiving joy. If you are looking for what’s wrong in a situation, you will find it. You will also find yourself with a residual, grumpy disposition. Challenge yourself to find the positive or, at least, the ridiculous in the holiday mayhem. This applies to anything that gets your knickers in a knot this season. Yes, even that irritating relative. However you celebrate holidays or special seasons throughout the year, remember that the ability to enjoy those times resides in being fully present; not the gifts, decorations or food. Plan now and don’t let anyone or anything steal your joy this year.

up sleeping on a heap of old bridesmaid dresses! Plan to make three piles; Keep, Let Go, and Not Sure. T W O — Separate your seasons.

Pull out any items that are off-season – lightweight fabrics, sundresses, etc. Put these items in the back of your closet or in another closet all together. You can evaluate pieces all at once, or wait until that season arrives. I prefer to wait; it’s less overwhelming to do this seasonally. T H R E E — Remove your "activity" clothes.

These might be work out clothes or items for hobbies or sports activities. Give these their own space. Now you should be left with things that are in season and you could potentially be wearing everyday. Time for the tough questions! AMANDA SEARS

Time for a wardrobe

Edit

F O U R — Retire & replace.

Is it ripped, stained, pilled, faded or just generally tired? It may be a great item, but if it’s not in good condition, it’s time to retire and replace!

Is it dated? The pattern, type of fabric, even color of a garment can make it feel dated and frumpy. This step can be a slippery slope and helpful to have a friend or professional help.

Does it fit? Just about every woman I know keeps a pair of “skinny” and “fat” jeans in her closet for those times when life takes over and we end up with an unexpected number on the scale. That’s perfectly normal! But if something doesn’t fit you CURRENTLY, put it elsewhere. It’s not serving you in this moment.

Does it fit your current lifestyle? If you used to be a banker, and now you’re running a catering business from home, donate those suits! If you are finished growing your family, let go of those maternity jeans! I don’t care how comfortable they are!

Is it a sentimental favorite? It’s natural to associate wonderful memories with a garment, but if it’s not something you wear and love, then find it a special drawer or a place to hang away from your everyday garments.

I love a new year. It's crisp and clean like a freshly pressed shirt. Personally, I’m not big on making resolutions, but I am big on purging; cleaning out closets and making disorganized spaces feel Zen again! As a professional stylist, I help clients edit and assess their wardrobes year-round. My goal for each client is clothing that empowers and gives them confidence. Everything fits, looks flattering, and they know exactly how to wear it. Every item in their closet is either useful or beautiful! Sound good? Here are some of my top tips to get your closet headed in the right direction. O N E — Prep

Try to set aside about 2-3 hours for this process. It’s likely you’ll have piles of clothes on your bed as you sort through things. Allow plenty of time to put everything away properly, so you don’t end

Limit distractions in your closet by changing your hangers. I love the skinny velvet ones. Their skinny profile allows for more space and clothes won’t slip off! There’s a good chance after evaluating your piles that you’re still going to have misgivings and questions. Put the questionable items in a separate closet or storage. Once they’re out of sight, see if you think about them. If you miss it, bring it back (unless it’s really bad?)! A lot of times you’ll be ready to let it go after more time has passed. MustHaves

I find that 9 out of 10 of the women who seek my advice are all looking for the same thing: a healthy glow.

This is easy to achieve when it’s warm outside and we can use what mother nature is offering to our advantage. Our skin is possibly sunkissed, we might have a natural flush from the heat, a little bit of a sheen. But what’s a gal to do when the days get cold and short, and we start to feel pale and dull? Aside from your good skin care practices, you can use makeup to enhance or play down – or dare I say perfect your facial features. And it doesn’t have to be complicated. Some ladies (like me) are not afraid and will welcome a multitude of steps to achieve her end goals. Others (also like me on some days) want the most bang for the buck – how can I achieve the most while doing the least?

or something otherworldly that can be seen from space. I am talking about what I call “grown woman highlighter.” A little light on the tops of the cheekbones and down the center of the nose can do wonders. People won’t even realize what it is, they will just think you look amazing! Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Beauty Light Wand ($38) might be the most gorgeous liquid highlighter on the market currently. And for those who prefer powder, Dior Diorskin Nude Air Luminizer Powder ($59) is one of my favorites. It comes in a range of shades and the powder is so finely milled, it almost appears to be liquid on the skin. Gorgeous. BLUSH

Nothing will wake up a face like a fresh pop of color on the apples of the cheeks. It even makes your eyes pop. This it is a must. If I had to choose only one blush (gulp), it would be Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Rose Bronze ($45). I have worn this blush for 25-plus years. No matter what, it is in my arsenal. But Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic in Love Glow ($40) is creeping its way up to my top! The best liquid blush is Nars Orgasm ($30)–it's not too pink, too peach, too golden, too anything! It is perfection in a bottle. And rightfully so since it is born of the original Nars Orgasm powder blush that I am sure is in a hall of fame somewhere. Use these three products to enhance your beauty this winter and just maybe you can forget about that short, dreary, cold day that is waiting out there for you. Buffy is a Nashville native and a Beauty Stylist at Nordstrom Green Hills. Find her at Instagram.com/beauty_buff615.

The answer is crystal clear: bronzer, highlighter and blush. BRONZER

I use bronzer every single day. It’s quick and easy, you don’t have to be precise, and the effect is like a vacation on your face. You know how everyone just looks better after vacation? Yes. My ride or die is Tom Ford Illuminating Powder Duo in “Moodlight” ($85, nordstrom.com). It is supposed to mimic the way skin looks in candlelight. I must mention it is technically not even a bronzer, but to me it is and always will be. It makes you glow. If you aren’t into shimmer, Nars Laguna Liquid Bronzer ($40) is a cult favorite. The perfect brown tone that suits most everyone. HIGHLIGHTER

Highlighter is a scary term to a lot of women. I mention it, and I am often met with “oh no! I’m too old! It’ll show my wrinkles.” Ladies, hear me, this is just not true. I’m not talking about glittery,

YOUR SECR E T WE A PON:

a r t p l Scu

By the time you’ve reached 50, studies show you’ve lost up to 30% of your natural collagen production, It's time to fight back. Do you have sunken cheeks or lack of facial fullness due to aging, weight loss or a medical issue? If so, Botox and other dermal fillers may not be enough to produce the soft, natural look you hoped to achieve. The good news is there’s now a collagen stimulator that can.

BOOSTER SHOT Collagen is your body's most abundant source of protein. It's literally the "glue" that helps to hold the body together. Unfortunately, the reality is your body decreases collagen production by 1% each year after age 18. You begin to notice when fine lines and wrinkles appear. By the time you turn 50, you may have lost up to 30% of your collagen content. Sculptra is a bio-stimulator, and it’s different than other fillers on the market. It's sometimes called a collagen “booster shot” for the face and cellulite. Yes, cellulite! Sometimes Botox and dermal fillers aren’t enough

to restore the face’s natural contour. Sculptra works to create a base framework you can build upon with additional fillers. It works deep in the skin’s dermal layer by stimulating your body’s natural production of collagen. It adds structure where the loss of volume causes the skin to sag. Sculptra has been shown to help the body produce it even after decades of decline. The results are more natural-looking and can last up to two years, which is significantly longer than other dermal fillers like Juvederm or Restylane. We do suggest that you come in for one maintenance treatment a year to maintain optimal volume in the treated areas.

HOW IT WORKS Sculptra ( “poly-L-lactic acid” or PLLA) is a synthetic form of lactic acid, a naturally occurring substance our muscles make after we exercise. The addition of the “poly” in the word is simply lactic acid molecules stuck together in strings, better known as a polymer.

Treatment Areas

It's safe.

Sculptra is unlike any injectable on the market that re-contours the face, adding volume and a naturally youthful fullness. Here are possible treatment areas:

Sculptra has been a favorite facial rejuvenation treatment in Europe for almost 20 years. It has a well-established safety record when injected correctly. Sculptra is produced under laboratory conditions and contains no animal products or human DNA. There are places it doesn't work. Although there are several “off-label” uses for Sculptra, there are places on the face where it cannot be used due to the nature of the way it works. For example, Sculptra cannot be used on the forehead, around the eyes or around the lip area. Cellulite and butt augmentation are two newer treatment areas for Sculptra. It can be used to smooth out dimpling where cellulite is notable as well as volume in the buttock area where flatness occurs. Combine with other treatments for faster results. Due to the way Sculptra works as a bio-stimulator to induce your body to build more collagen, it can take some time for results to be noticed. This is why we use Sculptra as a “framework,” to restore your face’s own youthful fullness deep beneath the surface. It takes 45-90 days after the treatment before more volume is evident in the treated areas. Sculptra will work as a long-term foundation that works to build volume in fullness constantly and gradually.

Many clients use Sculptra in combination with other more immediate anti-aging treatments like Botox, laser treatments, Latisse and quality skincare products.

RECOVERY When you receive Sculptra injections, you'll receive recommendations for post care. You’ll be advised not to exercise for a few days, and you may feel fullness in the area of the injection even though it isn’t visibly noticeable. You can also expect to see a little bruising and mild swelling, but both can usually be easily covered with makeup. The best way to keep bruising to a minimum is to avoid taking any medication that increases bleeding (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, omega 3 fatty acids) for one week prior to your treatment. If you are taking any of these medications on a daily basis for health and/or pain management, speak with your doctor before discontinuing them. The results are more natural-looking than those offered by using other dermal fillers alone and can last up to two years.

To the

Nines

Make the most of YOU, inside and out, in 2019 W O R D S B Y Karen Huber

Leave it to the Oxford Dictionary to give us the go-to phrase of 2019. The phrase “dressed to the nines” gained popularity in the mid 19th century, but it originated much earlier than that. “To the nines” first appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1719, meaning, quite simply, near perfection. But in the 21st century, we tend to let those nines dictate our age, our schedules and our years. Nines herald the start of a new decade—and a reminder of the passing of time. Today we give them more power over our fears than their fair share, when the 18th century had it right all along: Nines are as good as it gets. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, author Daniel H. Pink highlights something we all know, but maybe tend to forget: “How we start something has long-lasting effects. The good news is a re-start can be just as beneficial.” It’s time to take the power of nines back. And 2019 is the perfect time to (re)start.

KICK HARDER Did you know more people run marathons in their “nine-ender” years? In fact, according to a 2014 study by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, experienced marathon runners aged 29 and 39 tend to perform 2 percent better than they do at other ages. And it’s not just age—or marathon—related. “Reaching the end also stirs us to act with greater urgency in other arenas,” says Pink in an article for The Atlantic. “During the minute the half is ending, when the team that possesses the ball has every incentive to put points on the board, teams score around double what

they score during any other minute of the game.” At the same time, don’t forget the small things are just as important as the big milestones. If it feels overwhelming to think about accomplishing a large goal, try breaking it down into smaller steps. “Reframing the small stuff as important tasks that contribute to reaching the larger goal can help us generate the mental momentum needed to tackle the jobs,” says James Ulrich in a piece for Psychology Today. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself that achieving even small, yet important goals feels insurmountable. Use that extra ounce of ninesized motivation to kick panic to the curb on our way to the finish line. Complete that dissertation, make that hard phone call, put off procrastinating and finish well. NO MORE UH-OHS “Midlife malaise is a real thing,” says Pink. “The U-shaped curve of well-being is something most of us encounter.” Some see the end of a phase looming in the foreground and can stress at the deadline of what-ifs or too-lates. Frustration, anxiety and exhaustion plague us, especially when it looks like time might just be running out. But instead of letting those “uh oh” moments get us down, Pink suggests harnessing the uh-ohs for fresh starts instead. Think about the things you can do now that you couldn’t do 5, 10 years ago, or the opportunities you should take advantage of now. Something else that’s important to remember when it comes to “uh oh” moments is that everyone’s timeline looks different. We all have an idea of what our life and path will look like, including some potentially arbitrary concepts of when certain events and milestones will happen. But guess what? Sometimes (read: all the time) life has other plans. The

key: do what you can with what you have, and let the rest fall into place. COUNTING FIRSTS (OR COME UP WITH SOME NEW ONES) Remember the days of counting first steps, first birthdays and first words? Or maybe it was your first day on the job or your first apartment. Some of those firsts seem long gone, and the excitement of something so freshly new could seem like yesterday’s news. But as we gear up for the first day of a new decade, keep counting—or come up with some brand new—firsts. Whether you choose to treat yourself to the small joys in life—first dinner at a fancy restaurant, first facial treatment, first piece of gold jewelry you bought for yourself—or one of life’s bigger memories— first visit to a new part of the country or world, first tattoo, first thrill-seeking adventure—the possibilities are endless. Another fun way to remember your firsts, and even just fun memories in general, is to write them on a piece of paper and put them in a jar. At the end of the year, you can look back on your special moment—and maybe start planning what you’d like to do in the next year. Make these firsts of 2019 the habits of 2020 and beyond.

FACE TIME If you’re waiting for permission to pamper yourself, consider this your golden ticket. Our skin works hard at protecting us through seasons, pollution and stress, so take this year to return the favor. Brow treatments are a great starting point for brightening your look and lifting your eyes (and your spirits), says Haley Wood, founder of The Look Facial Aesthetics: “The eyes are the window to the soul— make sure they’re well framed!” Or take your facials to the next step with microneedling or dermaplaning to restore a youthful glow. To make sure you’re putting your best face forward for all the nines to come, one of the most important—and easiest—steps you can take is investing in your skin’s health. To get those long-lasting, healthy results you’re looking for, medical-grade skin care products will make the difference.

PACK A SPIRITUAL PUNCH It seems we all put “busy-ness” on a pedestal, taking some sort of comfort in constantly being busy and on the go. This year, make a point to let yourself rest and take a step back from time to time. We promise the world won’t stop spinning—and you can always jump back into the swing of things when you’re ready. “Breaks are not a sign of sloth but a sign of strength,” Pink contends, suggesting a mid-afternoon siesta may just be the secret sauce for psychological well-being. Harkening back to spiritual and religious practices like meditation and prayer can refresh and re-energize our days and even shift the way we think about life and work.

Bursting the Water Myth The new norm is not 8 glasses of water a day, because the amount of water needed is as unique as you. The key? Drink to your thirst. Here are some facts to help: Benefits of Water: •

Boosts immune system

Improves complexion

Maintains regularity

Prevents headaches

Water-rich foods: •

Fruits, Watermelon, Strawberries, Cantaloupe, Vegetables, Iceberg lettuce, Celery, Green peppers

How should I gauge the amount? •

Sedentary: Weight / 2 = ounces

Example: 150 pounds / 2 = 75 ounces per day

Active: Weight = ounces

Example: 150 pounds = 150 ounces per day

Modern soul-care guru Brené Brown agrees: “If we want to live a wholehearted life, we have to become intentional about cultivating rest and play, and we must work to let go of exhaustion as a status symbol and productivity as self worth.” Meditation is one way to become more mindful and intentionally build rest and reflection into your routine. It may sound like too lofty of a concept, but it can truly be as easy as repeating a mantra while driving to work or getting your morning coffee ready—even something as simple as, “I am enough” can be a powerful way to start your day. Using an app such as Calm or Headspace is a great first step toward employing this small yet powerful practice. Don’t wait till 2020. Make these changes now and dress yourself, inside and out, to the nines.

Gratitude is the sign of noble souls AESOP

The art of saying

Thank you! Try this social experiment – go to a coffee shop and when they ask what you'd like to order, say, what would you like to make me? The reality is we live in a society where we have expectations, sometimes very specific expectations. At a coffee shop, you expect to get exactly what you want with no substitutions, no variations and no questions asked. With a click of an app, foods and fresh produce arrive at your door. You can even get a car to drive you wherever you need to go. We live in a world of expectancy; we “expect” to get what we want, when we want it – all because we "deserve" it. We say, I've had a bad day or I've been good and the reason why we deserve something goes on. However, it’s an erroneous mindset to think you should get what you deserve, because many times we receive much of what we don’t deserve at all. Did a person really deserve to be born into a loving family? Did a person really deserve to never know a day of hunger in their life? The assumption that we receive what we do or don’t deserve is based on a flawed sense of fairness, and as we’ve all heard in our life, life isn’t fair – no matter which side of the fence you are viewing if from. Living in a society of expectancy based on what you deserve is a slippery slope

THE SE LE T TER PR E SS " YOU A R E A PPR ECIATED" C A R DS A R E E A S Y TO KEEP ON HAND. WRITE A QUICK NOTE ON THE BACK AND GIVE A W AY T O C H A N G E S O M E O N E ' S D AY. O R D E R A S TA C K AT H T T P S : // Y O U A R E . C A R D S /.

to a life of selfishness and self-absorption; ultimately it ends up really being all about you. So how can we live in a society of expectancy without drowning in self-absorption? It’s simple – show gratitude. It's a proven scientific fact that exercising gratitude rewires your brain, but take that one step further and start seeing every second as a gift from God. Begin viewing gratitude as a verb – an action, here are some simple suggestions as to how you can every day: •

Write a card to someone in your life just because…

Take that grocery cart back into the store

Buy a journal and make it a gratitude journal

When your house is a mess, instead, change your mental frustration to gratitude. "Ugh, this house is a mess, but I'm so thankful I have a home!"

Exercise gratitude and it will rewire your brain, override toxic emotions, but more importantly, it changes your heart.

Treatment

Here are four ways to roll out the red carpet for life’s special celebrations and get ready for your closeup.

UNVEIL A BRIGHTER LOOK 01

Dermaplaning Put your brightest face forward at all your upcoming events with a dermaplaning and stimulator peel treatment. Dermaplaning gently exfoliates your skin, removing dull skin cells and smoothing out your face to reveal a brighter look. It’s also the perfect smoothing solution for those with sensitive skin or rosacea, and those prone to redness, who try to avoid the harsher chemicals used for peels. Combine dermaplaning with a stimulator peel, which reduces the appearance of age spots and sun damage while also creating softer skin, to truly achieve a special event readylook. (Even better: There’s no downtime after our stimulator peel, as it doesn’t leave any signs of redness or peeling!)

In less than five minutes, you’ll notice visibly more radiant and hydrated skin. Combining hyaluronic acid moisturizers and other botanicals to create a carboxy spray, this unique service also helps reduce redness, making it the perfect accompaniment to microdermabrasion or dermaplaning.
