ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST PRISM: A TIMELESS STATEMENT OF SELF-EXPRESSION

“At Rolls-Royce, we are led by the tastes and desires of our clients, who in many cases determine global trends in fashion and the wider luxury sector. Ghost Prism is an extension of the personal aesthetic of a specific subset from this group of tastemakers. The motor car’s innovative use of dark, neutral tones with subtle impulses of colour, places it firmly within the contemporary luxury landscape. Our clients are experts and connoisseurs

who know exactly what they want; Ghost Prism celebrates the unique relationship we have with them.”

Anders Warming, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Many Rolls-Royce clients are powerful and influential figures in the international fashion, design and super-luxury community. These individuals apply their professional instincts, as well as their personal sensibilities, to their Rolls-Royce

8

commissions. Based on the close relationship the marque’s designers have with these clients, they have anticipated demand for an emerging aesthetic movement and created Rolls-Royce Ghost Prism.

Drawing inspiration from the world of contemporary design, RollsRoyce Ghost Prism showcases flawlessly finished dark, neutral tones which are subtly accented with bold strokes of colour, creating a timeless statement. It is this contrast between a solid form and bright, spectral hues that inspired Ghost Prism’s name.

The example presented is shown in Gunmetal grey, which has a rich

mineral finish, produced through an exacting 10-step process in which four layers of paint are meticulously applied, then polished by hand for 16 hours.

In place of the marque’s classic mirror-polished stainless steel finish, the motor car’s grille and rearlid brightwork are presented in high-gloss Burnout, a smoked black-grey hue. To achieve this effect, each metal piece is hand prepared by the marque’s artisans: first, a light abrasive is used across each piece to provide a ‘key’ for a hardwearing primer, onto which four coats of Burnout paint is then applied. After curing, these pieces are individually polished to ensure

9

On the Road

10

that they match the high-gloss brilliance of the motor car’s coachwork. In keeping with the understated aesthetic of Ghost Prism, the front bumper and side profile brightwork feature a deep gloss black finish.

Clients have a choice of four bold accent colours – Turchese, Mandarin, Forge Yellow or Phoenix Red – to complement their chosen exterior colour and create the striking contrast central to this contemporary design movement. The selected accent colour is applied to the lower bumper inserts, brake callipers and coachline – a sparing yet cohesive gesture that spans the mechanical, aerodynamic and sculptural elements of Ghost. The subtle flashes of colour further extend to the interior

of the motor car, including the 1,040 coloured ‘stars’ in the Bespoke Starlight Headliner - each individually placed in the leather canvas through perforated holes, precisely chalked and punched by hand - which fill the cabin with a gentle glow.

While clients are able to appoint their interior suite with a near-limitless number of Bespoke colourways, early Ghost Prism commissions incorporate a light and vibrant palette, in contrast to the bold authority of the motor car’s exterior.

Just 120 examples of Ghost Prism are available globally, a subtle acknowledgement of 2024 being the 120th anniversary of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

FASTEST EVER ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE TURNS UP THE INTENSITY AS

NEW OFFICIAL FIA SAFETY CAR OF FORMULA 1®

Aston Martin is bringing innovation to the front of the Formula 1® grid in 2024 with its most driver-focused Vantage ever. Perfectly tuned and uniquely equipped to lead the pinnacle of motorsport around the Grand Prix™ circuits of the world, the new Vantage is ready to take up its leading role as an Official FIA Safety Car of Formula 1®.

A specially equipped version of the high-performance Vantage will lead all 20 F1® cars on the formation lap for this weekend’s FORMULA 1® STC SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX 2024, before taking its place at the exit of the pit lane, ready to roar into action should it be required to intervene and control the pace of the F1® race.

Revealed just three weeks ago alongside its ‘Brothers in Speed’ - the Vantage GT3 racer and AMR24 F1® challenger - the new Vantage is an authentic, unadulterated celebration of pure performance, engineered to deliver maximum thrills with maximum confidence and perfectly reflects the most dynamic period in Aston Martin’s 111-year history.

Marco Mattiacci, Global Chief Brand and Commercial Officer of Aston Martin, said: “Vantage is the very essence of the Aston Martin brand, so to see the fastest, most driver-focused Vantage yet play such an important role in the prestigious FIA Formula One World Championship™ is a source of great pride for us. For brand awareness, there is no global, high-octane sporting series that can match F1®. Building on the natural synergies between the sport and Aston Martin, racing fans will not only see the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team AMR24’s on track but also two of our most exciting performance models, Vantage and the award-winning DBX707.”

17

On the Road

Powered by a potent, hand-built 4.0 Twin-Turbo V8 engine, the new Vantage is the fastest of its breed, delivering a 30% increase on power over the previous model, ensuring the Vantage Safety Car is quick off the line, every time. Such is the performance of the new road-going Vantage, it required no engine upgrade, no changes to its cooling system and no upgrade in braking performance to adapt it for its role as FIA Safety Car. It was born for this role.

Bernd Mayländer, FIA Safety Car Driver, commented: “It is a pleasure to drive the Aston Martin Vantage. The car comes from an incredible bloodline and this newest version is the fastest yet. My first impressions were very positive as I could immediately feel the improvement in handling and, of course, power. We need a car that is fast and focused so we can respond quickly and safely when we receive the call for on-track deployment and Vantage provides that. I have enjoyed driving Vantage during the past three seasons and I’m happy to now be one of the first to drive the new Vantage and experience its full performance pedigree on the world’s greatest circuits.”

The new Vantage, the most sporting model in Aston Martin’s portfolio, has gone through a rigorous process to become an Official FIA Safety Car of Formula 1®. To provide maximum attack on the race track, this unique car has additional, modified underfloor aerodynamics, along with an extended and profiled front splitter. For extra downforce a new rear wing has been specifically fitted in a bespoke position with a tuned Gurney. The FIA lightbar has also received new aero-profiling as every millisecond of performance is vital whilst leading the pack of F1® cars with rapidly cooling tyres.

Inside the Vantage Safety Car sits a plethora of systems to assist the driver and passenger in their roles. The production seats have been replaced by Pole Position Seats to keep FIA Safety Car driver, Bernd Mayländer and his passenger firmly in place as they circulate at speed. A bespoke centre console is fitted with switchgear to work the FIA systems, along with screens showing live lap times, the track positioning of all of the cars and a rear-view camera. Although functional, the Safety Car is still an Aston Martin so the interior has been finished in a unique Lime Essence trim in a nod to the marque’s own racing colours.

Roberto Fedeli, Group Chief Technology Officer of Aston Martin, added: “Every thought, every idea, every piece of technology and every stroke of the designer’s pen that went into Vantage can now be enjoyed by the fans of F1®. This new car is already the fastest and most driver-focused Vantage yet, which makes it perfect for this unique job so to turn it into an Official FIA Safety Car of Formula 1® was primarily a task of adding all of the FIA equipment. Of course, it has additional aero not found on the road car to make sure it can attack the race track and showcase the capabilities of our newest ultra-luxury high-performance car.”

The Vantage Safety Car and DBX707 Medical Car will make their 2024 debut at this weekend’s FORMULA 1® STC SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX. As in previous years, the cars will be painted in the same Aston Martin Racing Green colours as the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team cars.

Safety has never looked so thrilling.

METAHUMAN ARTIST MONOC UNDERGOES

A “GEMORPHOSIS” AFTER FALLING IN LOVE WITH RUBIES

Gemfields, a world-leading responsible miner and marketer of coloured gemstones, announces a collaboration with MonoC, the world’s first metahuman artist. This collaboration will employ a surreal virtual perspective to explore the meanings associated with rubies, highlighting their strong connection with love over a two-part film. This first collaboration with a virtual artist is a new approach for Gemfields, and provides a novel way to increase awareness and desire for coloured gems.

The two-part film follows MonoC as she visits the gemstone mine, before following a couple, deeply in love. When she watches their love blossom, she becomes aware of the connection between rubies and passion, with a quickened heartbeat and the red of blood rushing through our veins, and that the rarity of these gemstones is as special as finding “the one” to share a life with. Adopting the surreal and artistic style of MonoC, we are able to conceptualise the couple’s love, watching the feeling take the form of a ruby

26
Brilliant

gemstone as unique and special as their love. This ‘gemorphosis’ is captured in the two-part film, and we are able to see that the ruby on MonoC’s finger serves as a lasting reminder of the magical, deep feelings of love and passion.

In addition to the two-part film, Gemfields has launched an interactive WeChat mini app for Chinese consumers, designed by MonoC and named GEMORPHOSIS. The mini programme allows each user to find their own virtual ruby, which is generated by measuring their heartbeat frequency on their mobile device. GEMORPHOSIS then provides consumers with wearable inspiration by nominating a Fabergé x Gemfields ring that best matches their virtual ruby.

China is the largest jewellery market in the world, with many consumers interested in coloured gemstones. A report on Chinese ruby consumption trends, which Gemfields launched in January 2024, found that awareness of and desirability for rubies are high in the China market. Furthermore, respondents were found to regard red as a symbol of passion and life and

favoured ruby designs that were versatile and could be integrated into everyday life.

“Collaborating with MonoC has enabled us to adopt a surrealist perspective to explore the powerful feelings that can be evoked by the meaningful gift of a gemstone,” said Emily Dungey, Gemfields’ marketing and communications director. “This two-part film explores the profound symbolism of love, and the natural fit for ruby as its keepsake. Rubies are instinctively symbolic of passion, emotion and the connection some of us are lucky enough to forge with the one we love.”

From ancient times to the present day, rubies have been cherished for their rarity and rich red colour. Known as the “King of Gemstones”, rubies have been aptly described as “the heart of Mother Earth,” having formed deep beneath the Earth’s surface some 500 million years ago.

Gemfields responsibly mines Mozambican rubies, in keeping with its core brand value of operating with transparency, legitimacy and integrity.

SAND GOLD: A NEW MATERIAL FOR AUDEMARS PIGUET’S ROYAL OAK

Furthering its material exploration, Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacturer Audemars Piguet is delighted to introduce its very first timepiece crafted in sand gold, a new 18-carat gold alloy conferring rich plays of light. Hovering between white and pink gold, its colour changes depending on the angle and light, thus offering varied aesthetic possibilities. The Manufacture premieres this precious metal with the launch of a new Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked in 41 mm. To complement the new gold case and bracelet, Audemars Piguet developed a matching sandgold-toned hue to adorn the openworked bridges and mainplate of Calibre 2972, whose multilayered architecture takes centre stage on both sides of the watch. This new galvanic colour sits in subtle contrast with the rhodium-toned components of the movement’s inner workings to create a unique 3D effect. The result is a harmonious scene blending technical complexity with contemporary design.

A NEW SHADE OF GOLD

The new 41 mm Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked premieres the use of sand gold at Audemars Piguet. This 18-carat gold alloy, named after sand dunes in the sunlight, combines gold with copper and palladium for a warm rendering. Wavering between white and pink gold, it offers subtle colour variations depending on the light. In addition, it provides resistance to discolouration over time, making it both a durable and timeless material.

The sand gold case and bracelet are finished with the Manufacture’s trademark alternation of satin brushing and polished chamfers. The large mirror-polished bevels of the octagonal bezel and the chamfers adorning every link and stud of the tapering bracelet accentuate the play of light conferred by this precious material.

Brilliant Bijoux 28

To match the case and bracelet, the Manufacture has developed a sand-gold-toned hue, obtained through galvanic treatment, to adorn the inner bezel as well as the openworked bridges and mainplate of Calibre 2972, visible on both sides of the watch. The openworked components have been finished horizontally and vertically to accentuate the movement’s depth, while the brushed and polished angles enhance the play of light.

The sand-gold-toned bridges and mainplate are contrasted with touches of grey. The rhodium-toned barrel, geartrain and flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock are complemented by white gold hour-markers and hands, all filled with luminescent material. To give pride of place to the movement’s openworked architecture, the “Audemars Piguet” signature has been printed in black on the glareproofed sapphire crystal at 12 o’clock.

On the caseback side, the rhodium-toned 22-carat pink gold oscillating weight furthers the two-tone aesthetic of the openworked movement.

AN OPENWORKED MOVEMENT WITH A THREE-DIMENSIONAL ARCHITECTURE

First released in 2022 for the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary, Calibre 2972 combines a selfwinding mechanism with a flying tourbillon. Its highly stylised and multilayered

openworked architecture has been conceived to offer symmetry while bestowing the watch with a unique 3D effect.

This movement builds on the age-old openworking techniques that have been reshaping what is possible with wristwatch design since the 1930s. The beauty and finesse of the mechanism are revealed by removing as much material from the mainplate and bridges as possible to let light pass through, without impairing its functions. Leveraging advanced manufacturing technologies, the preliminary geometries of the mainplate and bridges have been cut through computer numerical control (CNC) machining, before being perfected by electric discharge machining (EDM). This manufacturing process enables the removal of small amounts of material with extreme precision to reach the desired shape.

The geometrical openworked bridges and mainplate have been decorated with horizontal and vertical hand-finishing, accentuating depth and play of light. In addition, the other movement components present refined Haute Horlogerie decorations including satin, circular and sunray brushing, snailing, as well as polished chamfers. The polished V-angles that can be admired on both sides of the watch reflect the meticulous handiwork that went into their realisation as this level of craftsmanship can only be achieved by hand.

29

A noble metal par excellence, gold has been revered over time for its rarity, value, aesthetic quality, durability and technical properties. In addition to being resistant to corrosion, oxidation and discolouration, gold is a biocompatible and malleable material easier to work than other metals. Its softness and workability have made it ideal for the fabrication of jewellery, watches and other intricate decorative objects. Symbols of wealth and prestige, these gold creations have been decorated with artisanal techniques ranging from engraving and enamelling to gemsetting, among many others.

In jewellery and watchmaking, pure gold (24 carats) has often been combined with different metals such as copper, silver and palladium to create stronger and more resistant alloys, each endowed with its own colour, hardness and technical properties. As most players in the industry, Audemars Piguet principally works with 18-carat gold alloys when it comes to the external parts of its watches. With their composition (75% gold, 25% other metals), 18-carat gold alloys are more durable than pure gold, as the addition of metals makes them harder and more resistant to deformation. Yet, their

high amount of gold confers them a deeper and richer colour than lower carat alloys. Note, however, that before the 1950s, alloys were defined more freely, leading to great variation in terms of composition and colour. In other words, two 18-carat “yellow gold” watches often did not have the same yellow hue. The increasing need to reach uniformity across the watchmaking sector led the “Normes Industrielles de l’Horlogerie Suisse” to establish composition standards in 1966 for 18-carat gold alloys, which stabilised their colours in turn.

Gold alloys, in all their creative variations, have played an important role at Audemars Piguet since the inception of the company. Out of the 567 complicated wristwatches that were cased-up and delivered by the Manufacture between 1882 and 1969, 432 were made in gold (248 in yellow gold, 68 in white gold, 41 in pink gold, 32 in green gold and 43 with no N-specified colour).

In the 1970s, at a time when yellow gold still dominated the world of luxury watches, Audemars Piguet started experimenting with stainless steel, a more contemporary material, to anticipate changing and more active lifestyles.

The Royal Oak (Model 5402) released in 1972 marked a turning point for the Haute Horlogerie industry, its body

A

LEGACY

of hand-finished stainless steel and exuberant price tag placing it on the par with gold watches. Gold models came to complement the original steel timepiece four years after its launch and contributed to establishing the Royal Oak as a collection.

The first Royal Oak model to incorporate gold was the Royal Oak II (Model 8638), the 29 mm women’s version designed by Jacqueline Dimier, which was first released in stainless steel in 1976. A year later, this timepiece was reinterpreted in a two-tone design combining yellow gold with stainless steel and in a full yellow gold version, followed in 1978 by a very limited white gold iteration. In 1977, the Manufacture also released its first 39 mm 5402 Royal Oak models in yellow gold, white gold and in a two-tone combination, as well as a new 35 mm intermediate size, Model 4100, available in steel, yellow gold and two-tone. From 1979, nearly three-quarters of the Royal Oak watches were partially or entirely made of gold—a precious material that has remained a staple of the collection to this day even when the price of gold soared in the 1980s.

Less common at the time, pink gold appeared in the Royal Oak collection in the mid-1980s and slowly

Brilliant Bijoux

gained ground across the Manufacture’s collections. In the 2000s, the demand for yellow gold watches faded in favour of models in pink gold, whose subtle, yet warm hues conquered the hearts. Today, pink, white and yellow gold are commonly used throughout the watchmaking industry, alongside other proprietary 18-carat alloys, including Everose Gold (Rolex), Sedna Gold and Moonshine™ Gold (Omega), King Gold and Magic Gold (Hublot) as well as Hard Gold (IWC).

The new Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked in sand gold builds on this longstanding legacy of gold watches while continuing Audemars Piguet’s material exploration and diversification. Coming alive in the light thanks to the alloy’s ever-changing colour, it offers new aesthetic possibilities merging contemporary design with endless elegance.

“With sand gold, Audemars Piguet is reviving the creative approach to gold alloys and colours that prevailed for thousands of years until the 1960s.”

ALULA’S UNIQUE AESTHETIC SHOWCASE TO THE DESIGN WORLD AT MILAN DESIGN WEEK

Design Space AlUla exhibits recent design initiatives inspired by the materiality of AlUla at the Mediateca Santa Teresa, in the heart of Brera, the historical design district of Milan 14-21 April 2024.

The exhibition includes works from recent projects launched in the burgeoning design destination of AlUla, an ancient oasis city with ambitious masterplans across the creative industries and design sector.

The pieces on display include designs by leading artists and designers; Dr Zahrah Alghamdi, Cristian Mohaded, TAKK (Mireia Luzarraga and Alejandro Muino), and TECHNOCrafts and were featured in two new design initiatives in AlUla this year - Madrasat Addeera Editions and the AlUla Design Residency, respectively curated by Samer Yamani and Ali Ismail Karami.

The projects featured from Madrasaat Addeera Editions:

Al Gharameel: The Magical Pillars. Dr Zahrah Alghamdi, a Saudi Arabian artist, takes the rock pillars of Al Gharameel as the inspiration of her edition. Recreated in leather embroidered with chamomile flowers, the Magic Pillars celebrate the unique biodiversity surrounding these natural features.

AlWaha: A room divider by Cristian Mohaded, an artist and designer from Argentina. It celebrates the qualities of Al Khous – the craft of weaving palm fronds. The concept brings the essence of Al Khous into the realms of design and art, drawing inspiration from the undulating desert dunes and oases adorned with palm trees.

Duna: The Seating Dune is a piece by the Spanish duo TAKK that introduces a versatile seating system. Inspired by AlUla’s

38

captivating desert, Duna’s form mirrors the undulations of sand without bounding the sitter to any predetermined positioning. The design features clay and naturally dyed fabrics, with colours that reflect the hues of AlUla’s mystical sunrise.

Alwadiya: The Living Pots by the Spanish design studio TECHNOCrafts is a self-sustaining system replicating the natural cycles of AlUla’s lush oasis. The pots are crafted using 3D-printed natural cellulose and PURE.TECH, an innovative decarbonisation material technology that absorbs CO2. They feature naturally dyed linen fabrics and biodegradable skins produced using AlUla’s own fruits and herbs.

The projects featured from AlUla Design Residency:

Peculiar Erosions: A bench and series of chairs by the Paris-based artist Leo Orta. The creations blur the lines between sculpture and everyday objects. Using adobe, rebar, and straw, Orta was inspired from the mud-brick architecture of AlUla and the specific geology of the region; the forms recall basalt and sandstone erosion, created by wind and water. By combining geology, architecture, and design, Orta’s work bridges the gap between these disciplines.

From Debris: A collection by Raw Materials, a design studio from western India. Inspired by historical local tools, the range consists of carved stones, lanterns, and metal pieces made from materials sourced in the oasis. The pieces reflect on the relationships between craft and labour in AlUla, reintroducing historic textures and offering a fresh perspective on their significance today.

Takki: A modular platform by architectural designer Leen Ajlan from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Its surface serves as both a game board and a space for sharing, revisiting local pastimes and the tradition of gathering in

39
Escape Diaries

recreational spaces. Ajlan aims to encourage people to rethink spaces for bonding and familiarity while also facilitating new forms of play.

Haus Dari: A seating system by the French collective Hall Haus. It reinterprets traditional cushions, takayas, and diwans that are an integral part of AlUla’s social life. Hall Haus’ work provides a fresh perspective on these everyday objects, repurposing them in a way that offers a new outlook on AlUla’s collective identity.

Surface!: A flexible partition made of stainless steel by the Danish architecture studio Bahraini. The installation can be used as a system for interfacing different publics while acting as a screen, hoarding, or curtain. It operates as a mediator between materials, spaces, and topographies.

Nora Aldabal, Executive Director of Arts and Creative Industries at the Royal Commission for AlUla said, “The growth of our design program reflects the continued development of AlUla as a centre for design, traditional arts and innovation whilst celebrating the cultural heritage, vernacular materials and natural history of the locale. These pieces have specifically been chosen as not only do they exemplify the emerging design aesthetic in AlUla but also the continued inspiration and dialogue that our destination offers to a broad range of cultures and artistic disciplines.”

Designed by renowned architectural practice CLOUD and designer Sabine Marcelis CLOUD & Studio Sabine Marcelis, the exhibition space reflects AlUla as a nexus of culture, creativity, and storytelling. Designed around the concept of light, central cylinder recreates an ideal sun, providing illumination to the main room. The dotted pattern on the floor reinterprets a traditional motif found in the streets of AlUla Old Town, while the Haus Dari seating system at the centre of the exhibition invites visitors to enjoy moments of relaxation and conviviality.

40

CLOUD & Studio Sabine Marcelis said, “AlUla is a magical place on many levels. From its long history, to its most recent transformations, the city has inspired many to create and dream. Design Space AlUla in Milan is the opportunity to unveil to the public the latest design initiatives developed in the city by designers who have been collaborating over the past months with local crafts. For this exhibition, we wanted to create a stage, not only to show a selection of finished products, but also to showcase the process behind them.”

Design Space AlUla was launched as a physical and conceptual permanent gallery in AlUla as part of this year’s AlUla Arts Festival in February 2024. The space invites the global creative community to discover the inspiration, creative process, and outcomes of the latest design initiatives developed in AlUla, Saudi Arabia and is the umbrella under which design projects will be lead.

POWERING GREEN CHANGE: THE ROLE OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR IN SAUDI ARABIA’S SUSTAINABILITY AGENDA

DR.

DINA AL NAHDY

Saudi Arabia is aggressively pursuing a sustainable future through its Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), strategically aiming to reduce its oil dependence and integrate sustainability across various sectors. The nation’s policy and structural reforms are directed at significant privatization efforts and leveraging public-private partnerships (PPPs) to foster economic diversification and environmental stewardship.

Policy Pushes and Structural Reforms

The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), launched in 2021, plans to invest over $186 billion in sustainability projects, targeting net-zero emissions by 2060. The initiative focuses on increasing renewable energy use and protecting natural landscapes through ambitious afforestation and conservation projects. Introduced in March 2021, Private Sector Participation Law facilitates enhanced involvement of the private sector in sustainability-critical sectors by offering a legal and governance framework that supports privatization, provides financial incentives, and ensures regulatory support for efficient service delivery.

Since its initiation in 2018, Vision 2030 Privatization Program has sought to unlock the potential of government assets, improving the

quality and cost-effectiveness of public services to drive economic growth through private sector participation.

Programmatic and Investment Opportunities

Housing and Urban Development

The Sakani program, under the

Development Housing Initiative, works with the non-profit sector to meet the housing needs of underprivileged families by rehabilitating over 350 residential communities across Saudi Arabia. It facilitates access to various housing options and financing solutions, enhancing the first-time home buying experience through a digital hub that

76

connects clients with real estate developers, sales, and financing agencies.

Environmental Management and Circular Economy

Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC) was established to elevate the Kingdom’s waste management standards by investing in projects that enhance conversion rates and recycling operations. This includes forming partnerships with private sector companies specializing in this field, SIRC aims to elevate the Kingdom’s environmental standards to the highest international levels, covering all types of recyclable materials throughout the Kingdom and the entire value chain. The company’s primary objective is to foster a circular econ-

omy by maximizing the value of waste materials while minimizing the environmental impact associated with waste generation and disposal, through activities such as waste collection, sorting, processing, and recycling, as well as the development of waste-to-energy projects.

Renewable Energy Projects

With substantial investments aimed at increasing the nation’s renewable capacity to 13.76 GW, Saudi Arabia is prioritizing projects such as the NEOM Green Hydrogen Company, which plans to produce 600 tons of carbon-free hydrogen daily by 2026 using renewable energy sources. SABIC Home of Innovation is highly energy- and water- efficient and is the first single-family home in the Middle East to achieve the platinum evaluation of the LEED Energy and Environmental Design Leadership System accredited by the American Green Building Council. Saudi Electricity Company has established a Green Sukuk Framework with the aim of facilitating transition to a low-emission economy and circular economy.

SEC’s first international Green Sukuks were issued in 2020, the first for a Saudi company within the Kingdom. The NEOM Green Hydrogen Company is working to produce up to 600 tons of carbon-free hydrogen daily in the form of green ammonia by 2026. This initiative is the world’s largest utility-scale, commercially-based hydrogen facility powered entirely by renewable energy.

15 Saudi companies, including Aramco, SABIC, Olayan Financing Company, and Ma’aden, have shown commitment to carbon emission reduction by participating in an auction for CORSIA-compliant and Verra registered carbon credits.

Economic Resilience and Diversification

Public Investment Fund (PIF) has evolved into a global investment powerhouse, expanding its reach with international investment pools and partnerships. It diversifies its investments across multiple asset classes and sectors such as healthcare, technology, and infrastructure, supporting global financial markets with substantial capital.

Pandemic Response and Economic Support

During the COVID-19 crisis, Saudi Arabia unveiled an emergency package that included financial aid, business loans, tax cuts, and government payment suspensions. A comprehensive SAR 190 billion support package was mobilized to bolster the private sector, involving various ministries and agencies to mitigate the economic downturn.

Contributions to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Saudi companies are pivotal in promoting sustainable practices across sectors. Significant initiatives include:

Carbon Emission Reduction: Companies like Aramco, SABIC, and Ma’aden are actively reducing emissions, with commitments to achieve carbon neutrality and significant investments in renewable energy sources. large-scale CCUS projects are operating in Saudi Arabia, with Aramco’s Uthmaniyah and Hawiyah NGL facilities reusing carbon for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). SABIC built the world’s largest carbon purification and liquefaction plant with 500 KTA capture capacity, for converting carbon into valuable chemicals such as urea, methanol and applications in the food and beverage industry. liquefaction plant with 500 KTA capture capacity, for converting carbon into valuable chemicals such as

urea, methanol, and applications in the food and beverage industry.

Biodiversity and Marine Conservation: Initiatives like the Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) collaborate with academic institutions to preserve marine biodiversity, supporting sustainable tourism.

Innovative Environmental Technologies: Projects such as the NEOM Green Hydrogen Company and large-scale CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) facilities demonstrate Saudi Arabia’s commitment to cutting-edge environmental technologies.

In Saudi Arabia, the commitment to sustainability transcends large government initiatives and encompasses smaller private firms and non-government entities, contributing significantly to the national sustainability blueprint. Saudi Arabia’s non-oil GDP growth and the aim for a 65% private sector contribution by 2030 highlight the pivotal role of SMEs. Leveraging frameworks like the Kafala system to support sustainable practices among SMEs can accelerate economic transformation under Vision 2030. Dedicated funding mechanisms for green SMEs, supported by entities like the Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF) and its Kafalah loan guarantee scheme, play crucial roles in this development.

For instance, Reza Hygiene has partnered with RCI to deliver a sustainable report that redefines goals and recalibrates priorities across its operations. This collaboration is aimed at refining their sustainability blueprint by structuring a strategic framework that informs key performance indicators and enhances their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting.

Additionally, Optimum’s environmental and economic values assessment report illustrates pathways that add life to non-combustible oil by positively impacting the environment and lowering business costs. This initiative focuses on reusing carbon-intense resources like waste oil, aligning with efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Circular Economy Company (CEC) has played and continues to play a pivotal role in supporting such entities to achieve thier goals throughout the Kingdom and beyond.

Challenges and Future Directions

Despite these efforts, challenges such as limited sustainability disclosures, fragmented policy frameworks, and low public awareness persist. Addressing these will require a comprehensive Corporate Sustainability Strategy, currently under development, which will solidify the Kingdom’s sustainability vision and outline actionable programs and initiatives.

A) Integration of Sustainability with Economic Goals

The integration of sustainability initiatives with economic development involves complex decision-making tools and analytics to ensure that environmental protection

measures contribute to economic diversification without stifling growth.

For instance, ACWA Power’s investment in renewable energy operations aims to provide up to 4 GW of renewable energy within the next three years, including solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass installations, directly contributing to both economic and environmental objectives.

B) Regulatory and Legal Frameworks

Saudi Arabia is refining its legal frameworks to support sustainability, with stringent guidelines on emissions and resource utilization that align with global standards.

The challenge lies in maintaining a balance between stringent environmental regulations and providing enough flexibility for industries to adapt. This balance is crucial to fostering private sector investments without incurring excessive operational costs.

C) Technological Innovation and Adoption

The adoption and adaptation of cutting-edge technologies in sectors like energy and water management are crucial. For example, ENOWA is developing a state-of-the-art desalination plant in Oxagon, NEOM,

78

powered by 100% renewable energy, showcasing significant technical and financial investment in sustainable infrastructure.

Ensuring technological interoperability and scalability across different regions and industries presents significant challenges. Moreover, there is a pressing need for technical training to equip the local workforce with the necessary skills to implement these technologies effectively.

D) Financial and Investment Uncertainties

Mobilizing private and public investments in sustainability projects requires sophisticated financial models and risk assessments to navigate uncertainties related to financial returns, particularly in innovative and untested areas.

Attracting consistent investment requires developing incentives such as tax breaks and subsidies, with a keen eye on global market fluctuations like oil price changes, which significantly impact financial stability.

E) Cultural and Social Integration

Large-scale awareness campaigns and educational programs are required to integrate sustainable practices into the daily lives of citizens, requiring strategic approaches to change management and behavioral science.

Programs need to be culturally sensitive and widely accepted, focusing on community involvement and the development of public-private partnerships that benefit local communities directly.

F) Monitoring and Compliance

Establishing a comprehensive monitoring and compliance system is critical, involving advanced data analytics, satellite monitoring,

The Trendsetter

and on-the-ground inspections to ensure adherence to sustainability goals.

The infrastructure required for such systems is substantial, necessitating transparency in reporting and accountability to maintain public trust and ensure compliance with standards.

Conclusion

Saudi Arabia’s strategic initiatives require a nuanced approach to

successfully integrate sustainability into its developmental agenda. Continuous efforts from all sectors of society, including government, private sector, academia, and civil society, are crucial for overcoming challenges and achieving the ambitious sustainability goals set forth in Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative. The success of these efforts will hinge on a cohesive and inclusive strategy that aligns economic growth with environmental stewardship.

THE TRANSPARENT MIRROR: A SNEAK PEAK INTO ONE’S SOUL

ENG. SORAKA SARIA AL-KHATIB

In the sacred season of Ramadan, a time of deep reflection and renewal, “The Transparent Mirror” takes on a profound significance. As we navigate the realms of luxury, elegance, and opulence, this period invites us to delve deeper into our selves and identities, exploring the essence beyond the gleaming surface through a lens of spirituality and faith.

Reflection and the Essence of the Transparent Mirror

Imagine standing before a mirror, not merely to observe your outward appearance but to peer into the depth of your being. This mirror, unlike any other, reflects not just the physical self but the soul within, urging a contemplation of the person we present to the world against the genuine self that resides within our hearts. In the last ten days of Ramadan, this reflection becomes a spiritual exercise, a time to connect with our deepest beliefs and values.

Meeting the Spiritual Self Behind the Mirror

This moment before the mirror is a call to introspection and authenticity. It marks the

birth of an avatar, the identity we craft and present to the outside world. Yet, in this holy month, we are reminded that beyond our avatars lies our true essence, a self that seeks connection not only with society but with the Divine.

Who is this avatar in the light of faith? A construct, perhaps, but also a bridge to deeper understanding and spiritual growth. The creation of these personas, especially pronounced during the reflective period of Ramadan, underscores our journey towards perfection in the eyes of the Almighty.

The Birth of the Avatar: A Spiritual Dive

The genesis of our avatars, viewed through the spiritual lens of Ramadan, becomes a narrative of striving —not for worldly accolades but for inner peace and divine approval. The luxury bubble, with its allure, is seen as yet another realm to navigate with grace and faith, balancing worldly desires with spiritual aspirations.

80

Connecting to the Divine Perspective

The transparent mirror, in these sacred days, challenges us to harmonize our worldly avatars with our spiritual selves. It’s a time not for discarding our personas but for enriching them with the virtues of faith, charity, and reflection. This Ramadan, stories of spiritual awakening and renewal within the luxury network inspire us to pursue a path of authenticity, where luxury and faith coexist harmoniously.

Beyond Reflection: Embracing Spiritual Identity

As we venture through the transparent mirror during the blessed last days of Ramadan,

we’re invited to a journey of self-discovery and divine connection. It’s an opportunity to transcend the bubble of worldly appearances and embrace the essence of our true identity under the gaze of the Almighty.

This Ramadan, let “The Transparent Mirror” serve as a reminder of the power of reflection, not just on our individual journeys but on our collective spiritual path. It’s a time to embrace the person behind the mirror, to align our worldly desires with our spiritual goals, and to reaffirm our commitment to walking in the light of faith and virtue.

RAC INNOVATION COUNCIL LAUNCHED BY COGNIZANT TO ELEVATE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE IN KSA

Riyadh Airports Company (RAC), which manages and operates Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (KKIA), has announced, in partnership with Cognizant, the RAC Innovation Council, a collaborative digital co-creation initiative to enhance traveler satisfaction in Saudi Arabia.

The official partnership agreement for the RAC Innovation Council was signed by both RAC and Cognizant’s teams, at the LEAP Exhibition 2024 in the Cognizant global booth on Monday, 4th of March 2024.

The summer of 2023 marked a resurgence in travel, but the industry now faces some fundamental changes

in traveler behaviors driven by higher digital expectations and some significant emergent and disruptive technologies. Digital innovation will play a pivotal role in realizing Saudi Vision 2030, ushering in a post-pandemic era of enhanced customer satisfaction and cost efficiency. Given the context, the RAC Innovation Council aims to elevate customer experiences and create lasting value for all stakeholders.

“We are confident in the remarkable capabilities of our collaboration with Cognizant, anticipating a multitude of significant benefits from the RAC Innovation Council,” commented RAC’s Chief ICT Officer, Mr. Osama Alfawaz. “These include a dedicated platform for

86

prioritizing use cases and initiatives against a defined and collaborative innovation backlog, fostering the creation of Proof of Concepts (PoCs) and Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) to unlock the potential of ideas through a ‘Fail Fast’ approach. Furthermore, the ownership of solutions developed as part of the innovation will be retained by RAC, empowering it to address systemic challenges and pioneer new ideas that anticipate evolving customer behaviors and explore practical applications for new technologies.”

“Our aim is to redefine travel experiences, focusing on customers, employees, and partners, to drive positive impact and contribute to the advancement of Saudi Arabia’s technology landscape,” said Mr. Tarek Zarg El Aioun, Saudi Arabia General Manager at Cognizant.

“We are committed to supporting an enterprise-led innovation council that addresses current and emerging business needs and provides necessary technology

acceleration to deliver on those demands. To this end, we propose a core team of RAC and Cognizant business and technology champions who can collaborate and co-create ideas and provide the guidance to scale this up.”

The council will convene regularly to collaborate on identifying business use cases for innovation, prioritizing use cases, coming up with solutions, and creative roadmaps for Proof of Concepts, Proof of Value, and scale-up initiatives. At times, the council will extend invitations to specific product vendors and industry peers who can provide an ‘outside-in’ view of emerging solutions applicable for RAC. Cognizant will use idea hacks to translate business use cases into executable ideas, build on solution concepts, and execute validation experiments. Successful experiments can be quickly developed into working Minimum Viable Products that can be scaled for the enterprise.

ALBON EDGES OUT ATKINS AS LEGENDS RENEW RIVALRY AT HISTORY-MAKING TOUGH MUDDER INFINITY ALULA

Jon Albon and Alisa Petrova were the respective men’s and women’s winners of the inaugural Tough Mudder Infinity event, which took place in the stunning Saudi city of AlUla with an overall prize pot of $480,000, the largest in obstacle course racing history.

The event featured over 1,000 participants, made up of elite-level athletes and those looking to take on an intense eight-hour endurance race, which was the first of its kind in the MENA region. More than 40 countries globally were represented, and there was also plenty of local representation with the likes of Nelly Attar, the first Arab woman to climb K2, and Rakan Al-Thaqafi, a Saudi Arabian amateur boxing champion, taking part.

As expected, the men’s race came down to a battle between long-time rivals and obstacle course racing legends Albon, from the UK, and Canada’s Ryan Atkins. The two men have been involved in plenty of epic contests over the years and this was no exception, as the duo led from the front for long spells, and it was the Brit who eventually crossed the line to take the $80,000 prize. Mark Batres, from the USA, finished third. After making history by winning the first of its kind event, Albon said: “It was tough, it was a tough course in its own way, the sand and the terrain and the fact it was flat made it really challenging as your legs got stiff on the sand.”

“It was over two years since I last did an obstacle course race, so it was nice to come back and find out whether I can do some obstacles. I really enjoyed the rings – I realised I hadn’t lost my touch.”

On the prize money, he added: “Not too shabby – it’s the best payday I’ve had from a race which is the cherry on the cake.”

He also provided his thoughts on AlUla, saying: “I had no idea where I was coming, the rock formations were

nice and then I went into the Old Town – it was the most interesting town, lit up old school buildings in the valley of these cliffs. It was a nice place, it’s going to develop so quickly and it’s interesting to see how many events will come herein the future.”

The women’s race was equally as exciting, as Petrova edged out USA’s Nicole Mericle and Switzerland’s Janka Pepova to walk away with the $80,000.

She said: “It was the first Tough Mudder race I’ve ever done – I’ve never ran so long before. I did 90km, the longest race I did.

“I tried sky running before, which was 50km, and it was so tough. The last two laps were so tough and my body started rejecting food and I could only drink water.

“My legs are so sore, and I’m so tired but so happy! First time winning a big race – I’ve never been first at a world championship. Thanks to my training, my supporters, and my husband, I’m so happy. Now I need to eat and sleep!”

As well as individual races, there were also competitions for teams of two and teams of four, which certainly didn’t disappoint on the entertainment front.

The two-person race was won by French duo Thibault Jean and Gregory Basilico, who finished ahead of Tyler Veerman and Kris Brown.

In the four-person race, meanwhile, it was the European Elite, made up of Jesse de Heer, Stijn Lagrand, Luca Pezzani and Goncalo Prudencio, who came out on top.

The event itself was a huge success, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to hosting largescale sporting events and elevating obstacle course racing as a sport, while also promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

Nic Cartwright, Tough Mudder Middle East License Holder, said: “We’re thrilled to bring the first ever Tough Mudder Infinity in the Middle East, right here in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. Athletes from over 40 nations battled it out for the largest prize pool in OCR history, while a total of 1,000 participants pushed their limits across all race courses – a testament to the growing sport of obstacle course racing in the region.

“Our incredible partners at the Royal Commission of AlUla were instrumental in bringing this vision to life and showcasing AlUla’s breathtaking landscape to the world. After this successful inaugural event, we look forward to bringing more exciting OCR experiences to the region in years to come.”
