“Green Camping” versus “Grüner Wohnen” green washing:

“Green Camp” implements that there is activity that effects a cleaner environment

„Grüner Wohnen“ is the first step to a green camping platform for those visitors thinking greener and cleaner no activities effecting environmental issues from promoters site


„Grüner Wohnen“ „Grüner Wohnen“ is a separated camping area for visitors interested in a cleaner, greener and more quite camping atmosphere on the festival. “Grüner Wohnen” is first of all not administrated by the promoter but by all participates. All visitors have the possibility to register for this camping site for free by downloading an application on the home page. If single visitors are not accepting the rules for this camping area they get rid of their “Grüner Wohnen” wristband and can keep on camping on the regular camping site. This project was successfully introduced at Chiemsee Reggae Summer 2010.

Motivation of establishing „GrĂźner Wohnen“ visitors become thinking greener visitors are asking for structures to behave greener at the festival reducing massive waste on the floor of the camping grounds pushing visitors in a green corner difficult areas (wood, festival neighbours)


Why register with application form? to make sure that just interested persons in that theme are using the offer of “Grüner Wohnen”.

to count the downloads so we knew what size of the area we need to prepare in advance.


Why self-administrated? to leave the feeling of freedom and self-administration to the visitor not to have to many roles visitors can break

Why no active input from visitors in advance? this is the first Step and needs to be developed to start the project we needed to make the application as easy as possible to have as much interested people as possible for making “Grüner Wohnen” happen.

Why does the area need to be fenced? to obviously separate this area from the other camping area to show the difference … does it?

Reaction: Visitors (forum) Positive “Grüner Wohnen” community really enjoyed this area visitors not joining “Grüner Wohnen” for this year are willing to join it next year visitors for festivals with no “Grüner Wohnen” Area (M’era Luna) are already asking for it

Negative visitors don’t like the fences friends without a “Grüner Wohnen” wristband couldn’t visit the site visitors where asking for organic food

Reaction: Security up to 20 people at the Hurricane Festival got rid of the “Grüner Wohnen” wristband no censures at the following festivals statement “easy handling of visitors in this area”


Reaction: Disposal Company Southside “Grüner Wohnen” (4.849 visitors): 4,7 t waste which is not even 1,5% from the waste appearance of the whole festival. no machine for lawn sweeping at “Grüner Wohnen” was needed less hours of work was needed to clean this area all in all only half of the effort for cleaning this area was needed no applicable reduction of the per head waste rate in regards to the last years!!!


Reaction: Disposal Company Area 4 und Hurricane: ca. 30 p.1,1liter containers on in the „Grüner Wohnen „ Area container can only be used in this area because of riot on normal camping ground technical equipment for cleaning wasn’t needed all in all 1/3 deduction of cleaning effort for this area


Backlash Rock‘n‘Roll needs to be dirty, free and loud! „Grühner Wohnen“ is bourgeois (spießig)! little Demonstration on fences


Benefit Promoter cleaner Area less garbage to remove / cost deduction cleaner camping area to be demonstrated to public authorities and neighbours less complaint from those visitors who wants the camping ground to be more quite and cleaner


Benefit Visitor gets the feeling that promoter takes care of the requirements gets possibility to behave greener on a festival more comfort direct success is obvious
