• Visit the new archaeological museum and of course Knossos. The civilization of Minoas will amaze you especially the beauty of the place. • Walk around the city of Heraklion. Start from the “Koule” fortress near the port and walk all the way until the city-centre and the square of the lions’ fountain. Enjoy a dish of sweet bougatsa at “Kirkor” shop, wander around the streets of the flea market, the small streets and definitely end your tour at the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis, the most famous Cretan writer. • Take a trip to the south. Through beautiful agricultural villages, cross the whole district, drive up to the Asterousia mountains and then down to the Libyan sea. Have a cool dive into the clear waters of, maybe, the least touristic sea side of the island. • Visit at least one vineyard. “Tamiolakis”, “Douloufakis”, “Boutaris”, and many others! The entrance is open for the public. You will taste some of the best wines of Greece, not only of Crete. Search for the roads of Wine in Heraklion and taste the ancient Cretan art of winery. • Visit Anogeia. The wonderful traditional village near the borders of Rethymnon district and the mountain of Psiloritis. KLOTHO Klotho was the youngest daughter of the 3 Faiths. She was the one who decided the present of each human according to the myth. She sewed their destiny until death. Alexandra Theohari, loyal to the story of her country, mythology as well as Art in general, she decided to follow the steps of her grandmother and create in the island of Crete her own workshop, making her dream come true. The colorful threads, the golden stitches, the artistic patterns even the sound of her grandmother’s loom are so memorable and lead her to take the big step. “Klotho” brings Cretan woven to life again, though some people believed that it was out of fashion. Simple lines, geometrical patterns inspired by Greek and Cretan mythology with minimal influences of Classic Greece’s simplicity. “Klotho” creations are for those who love and appreciate the meaning of handmade, but also for those who visit Greece and want to find the authentic Greek creation. Clear Greek cotton, leather from local tanneries as well as cooperation with the best Greek industries in order to achieve the best result in the sewing and finish of the cloth. The patterns of the clothes and accessories of “Klotho” originate from books and albums of museums and collections that are then examined and fiddled by Alexandra without changing anything of their character. She spends hours of color matching in order to reach a final decision. The final stage is the weaving with the loom.

A fire was set between two parallel rectangular stones and a cooking pan was put above. Thus ‘parasia’ was selected as the name of the restaurant, where the open kitchen dominates as a trademark. Off we go to the summit! A mountain climber of Psiloritis shares his experiences
Interview with Stelios Votzis
The word “mountaineering” makes people think of “hill walking”. The truth is that it is not only that. There are more that are included in this general term like rock climbing, mountain skiing, alpinism etc. I first started mountain climbing four years ago, as an amateur, when I first enrolled in the local mountaineering club of Rethymno. I wanted to come closer to myself through nature. I wanted to experience that feeling of the unknown, of the primitive. It is so awesome being isolated from the anxious pace of everyday life, its comfort, or even technology. My love for mountains, the incredible feeling that nature provides, exploration have made me love mountaineering unconditionally and it has become a way of living for me now. You can really understand the meaning of freedom through nature’s beauty, you can learn companionship, and co-operation since there is no negative competition but only support and help. Above all, we are human, and we help each other whenever it is necessary. The unique moment when you reach the summit of the mountain is of exceptional meaning to me. The adrenaline, that strong feeling inside your heart makes you realize of what really matters in this life… and you can find it only up there. Crete is definitely one of the most blessed places to live. It is a great combination of mountain and sea. This authentic difference makes it so appealing to many outdoorsy. Anybody can go from the mountain to the sea in no time at all. Thanks to Crete’s nature we can go canoeing in any canyon we want- there are plenty of them here. We can go hiking, without any special knowledge or even night mountaineering. The first time I went to Psiloritis was three years ago. We started walking at night in order to see the sunrise at the summit. I will never forget that feeling. Since then I have been visiting Psiloritis every year. How to get to Psiloritis: The most well- known paths to follow in order to reach Psiloritis are the following: The first starts from the “Lakkos of Migeros” at a hight of 1568 meters by following a beautiful cobbled path that meets the E4 path at the hight of 2200 meters. If we keep following the east route of E4 we can reach Psiloritis and in specific- the chapel of “Timios Stavros” at the hight of 2456 meters. The other known route is from the East side of Psiloritis, in the spot of “Toumpotos Prinos” at the hight of 1.600 meters, where you can find the shelter of the Mountaineering club of Rethymno. In order to approach the shelter you can either go on foot or by car. You will also find a signed path (part of the E4 path) that starts from the village of Fourfouras (42 miles from Rethymno) and lasts for about four hours. If you go by car you can follow the road from the village of Kouroutes (45 miles from Rethymno) where there is a road of 12 kilometer until the
shelter. The duration is 3 hours. The last known route starts from the plateau of “Nida” (the hiking lasts for about five hours). The plateau of Nida is a very fertile land at a hight of 1.400 meters up in the mountain of Psiloritis , 24 miles away from the village of Anogeia and 78 kilometers away from the town of Rethymno. EQUIPMENT: According to the level of difficulty of the routes and as time passes an individual can get their equipment. • Hiking boots: Everybody should choose the proper boot for their foot in order to feel confident. It must be until the point of the ankle. It is up to the kind of hiking route that you will follow and there is a wide range of boots to choose from. There are special boots for mountaineering on ice etc. You should be very careful so as to make your walking safe. • Backpack: You should have a big waterproof mountaineering backpack (40-90 liter) with an adjustable back when on excursions of plenty hours, or days of hiking, as well as a smaller one (20-40 liter) for the more relaxed routes. • Clothes: We should have good quality clothes, especially synthetic ones, heating clothes, fleece blouses, socks, waterproof jacket, hiking trousers. According to the weather conditions you can optionally wear a hat, a cap, gloves, sunglasses, walking sticks, gaiters in order to avoid having snow inside your boots. • Pharmacy: Each of you should carry with them a personal pharmacy kit as full as you can. For example you can have antiseptic bandages, sticking plasters, painkiller, aluminum blanket etc. • It is also necessary to have soap in a separate case, toothpaste, tooth brush, wet napkins, plastic bags, as well as a billy can, a spoon, a fork and a flask. Make sure you have a sleeping bag, a substrate, a torch with extra batteries, a compass, a knife and an individual rope with you.

Tsourlakis Tiles
The most famous tiles in the world have one name “Tsourlakis tiles” and they are made in Rethymno, in Crete. Countries like Germany, Spain, Italy, England, and even Dubai, choose the well known “Tsourlakis tiles” of Vaggelis Tsourlakis in order to give a special style in their places. Everything started in 1913, with the grandfather of Vaggelis, who was the one who was making tiles and other constructing products. After that, the business passed down to the hands of Vaggelis’ father and his uncles, but they only produced tiles. Years later, since Vaggelis Tsourlakis had gained a lot of experience from the factory he started making tiles on his own, without knowing that he would create a unique style that would make the difference. He started in 2011-2012. The templates that he followed are the neoclassical houses in Athens, with their impressive colorful tiles. Each of the customers can create their own tiles! Tsourlakis tiles have a white range of tiles and patterns to choose from. Whether you are an individual or an architect you can design your own tile, and the mold will be kept with your own name in their storage and can be used whenever you need. The materials used are completely natural: marble dust, sand, concrete, and minerals that help us to produce the colors. There are very few factories of this kind in the world and our way of working is totally traditional.

Archontiki Soap pure products with grandma’s recipe Fresh ideas, herbs, fragrance oils combined with pure olive oil are the basic ingredients that make the “Archontiki soaps” so unique. Aggeliki Reizaki has created a cozy and traditional workshop in which she produces her soaps at the village of Archontiki in Rethymno. Today she follows the steps of her grandmother Aggeliki who was her tutor and has developed her recipe. The procedure of the soaps’ production has been turned into a ritual by Aggeliki. Her colorful soaps smell so fresh like they are real fruits! And the most important thing are their high level of quality with the certificate of the General Chemical State laboratory that assures each customer that Archontiki soaps are appropriate for use for every kind of skin. “Since I was a little girl I remember myself being in the world of soaps! The most characteristic thing of my grandma was that she would put oil, water and soda in a big pot. And then after she had had her mixture done she would pour it in a wooden drawer. When the mixture was cool and set, she started cutting it”. Of course Aggeliki has found new ways and techniques for the production of her soaps in order to make them more impressive. Fragrance oils, and other pure ingredients like aloe vera, daphne, jasmine, honey, and many other are her new ingredients. The handmade “Archontiki soaps” are in separate categories: •
Olive soaps (simple, with aloe, with daphne, with honey)
•
Scented soaps (vanilla, lavender, magnolia, rose)
• Glycerin soaps (vanilla, gardenia, carnation, jasmine, cinnamon, watermelon, lavender, lemon, strawberry, chamomile) Don’t forget to try the special body oils with gardenia, magnolia, jasmine, vanilla, coconut, watermelon, baby powder! ROSS DAILY
“THE CRETAN” by Agapi Papoutsaki
I met him at his village, Houdetsi. He has been there for 35 years. Labyrinth is his home and Houdetsi, Crete are his homeland. He first came in Crete in 1970 with a friend. Ross had already started studying plenty of music idioms, not only European. One night, completely out of the blue he listened to the music coming out of a lyra at a local café of Kamilari village. He liked its sound so much and this is how his relationship with this musical instrument started. “During the middle years I gave up my studies in European music and dedicated myself completely to Indian music and Afghanistan’s music too. After I had travelled a lot in those places and studied their music, I went back to England in 1974 where I started mapping again a new trip to India in order to continue the job I had started there. Due to the fact that those kinds of trips to such places are so tiring I thought of stopping by to Crete and try myself in Lyra that I remembered I liked so much. So, there I was in Crete again in 1975. One thing brought the other and eventually I stayed here starting to learning with my tutor, Kostas Mountakis.” As time goes by and I get to know him I understand that in some way the music of Crete touched him and fitted completely his own temperament.
-You were born in England. Your parents are Irish and you have travelled around the world, you have learnt about different musical traditions and have collaborated with many musicians. In what way do you believe that all these experiences and the different stimulus have shaped and keep shaping your music identity? The music that each individual produces is an instant result of what they have experienced themselves internally and externally. So, all the things that I, personally have experienced in my life since I was a little boy, when I used to live in America, Canada, Japan and England, as well as when I was older, and India, Afghanistan, here in Greece. All these musical idioms have affected me. All the things that I do have a power on me. I try to let them affect me freely I do not try to be authentic concerning their characteristics. In fact, I believe that every individual can be authentic only with themselves. Nowadays, I think that this is getting more and more intense because, in my opinion nobody is a product of a specific culture. Maybe after sixty or seventy years we will be able to talk about that. If someone is born in Greece, and has been brought up here that person is a product of Greek culture because that person hasn’t experienced any other culture. The truth is that all of us have effects, and experiences from other cultures, so we all have various origins from many places of the world, so this is somehow a rule. -You have studied a lot many of the musical traditions of the East. Is there any special feature that attracted you and pushed you there? I was always the kind of person that was attracted by those kinds of music since I was a little child. Before I was born, my parents had lived in Iraq for four years. My mother, as a musician would listen to some melodies sung by the locals there, and she remembered them even when I was a child and she would play them with the piano. I remember myself looking at her. I felt like she wanted to tell me something. Although I started with a violoncello when I turned eleven years old I started playing the guitar and around thirteen or fourteen years old- when we lived in San Francisco, in America, a friend of my father took me one night to Alik Akbar Khan’s concert. That was a top Indian musician that played the Sarod, one of the most popular musical instruments of North Indian music. People of Stanford’s university would regularly organize concerts with Indian music or Iraq’s. I was so amazed with that concert because it was the first time I had ever listened to that kind of music. Those years
we had only heard of those kinds of melodies by a sitar with Beatles’ songs. The first thing I noticed was that I have always been keen on the form and the discipline in classical musicthat was the reason why I liked it so much, so when I heard that man playing- subconsciously I could understand the freedom of improvisation, and the form that provokes you to exceed yourself. That was what impressed me the most. When I went back home and for the next few days I kept trying to mime the melody of his songs with my guitar. I soon realized that I needed that specific musical instrument in order to play that music. So again I changed my destination. For the next two years I didn’t do anything special on that and when I went to England I came across the Indian society of London. This is how my schooling in Indian music started. Later on, my tutor sent me to his own tutor. I passed from Afghanistan too where I stayed nine to ten months and had lessons with Ustad Mohammad Omar, a top executive of rabab in that period. (musical instrument of Afghantistan’s music). Through all these trips of course, I stopped by Persia, Turkey, Greecethat I realized that all the musical idioms have so many relations between them, that they are not individual, but strongly connected. That made me understand that there is another type of music which- apart from the European polyphonic music, is called Tropical music and that it is based on modes. “Modes” are like musical recipes that I personally prefer calling them “music archetypes”. While I was getting to know this kind of musical world I started realizing other things concerning the goals and reason of existence of that specific music that really meant a lot to me. East music- especially when we talk about our era has to do a lot with the meaning of personal expression. It’s not always like that, but this is what we usually come across nowadays and in East music’s tradition. Unfortunately I believe that especially in the 20th century it is strongly emphasized and I can see some exaggerations. They ask you “What is melody?”, “What is rhythm?” but nobody can listen to them at all. I have always adored good melodies. That has always been of exceptional importance to me, as well as the magic of rhythm and the combination of these two. Nobody can describe the magic of a melody or of a musical pattern because these two touch us inside, we just know it, just feel it. It’s something that makes us expand our view on many things. First of all, on time: when you listen to a song, you are in close relation with its beginning and ending. You experience it spherically. We exceed our own conception.
This is the dimension that East musical traditions emphasize. They don’t care about personal expression and emotions even though this is what most of the people think. But it’s not. Here in Crete, there is a specific song that is called “Oso varoun ta sidera” (As the irons keep hitting). It is a song with such sad lyrics that is sung by a happy melody. I will always remember that when I would listen to that song, especially in melodies of that kind, the singers or players were so passionate, but this didn’t make a good impression on me. These songs need a more gentle way. You just express the feeling, with the melody and the lyrics, nothing else. There is a code of exceeding the personal dimension. But how far can it take you? It might take you far from your own limits and can change the feeling of time. Sometimes, I think of music’s power. The fact that it can give you so much and you can gain so many experiences in a life that is so short that in any other dimension of experience we would need thousands of years. I have found tropical traditions that work for me- personally, I don’t say that this is for people- and they do affect me a lot. There are also other musical idioms from East’s tradition too that have the same effect on me and on other people but w have to make some choices and I chose East music.
twelve in specific.
-The music workshop that you have founded at Choudetsi called “Labyrinth” has a very good reputation and is very active. What goals did you have in the beginning and do you feel that you have accomplished them?
This happens for sure, because music speaks in a more deep and substantial way to people. It’s what I call the archetypes. There is a specific procedure of translation of that archetype into experiences etc. So, when people feel that there is something common in this experiencing basis, this means that they not only understand someone else’s experiences but they also feel like they are theirs. This exact thing happens with music too.
Labytinth started basically as a group of research in 1982. All the people that belonged in that group played together in Heraklion in different shops and earned our living by playing music. Of course, that was really good and pleasant for us because it’s a blessing making money by doing what you love. But we didn’t play what we really loved but what was catchy. There are other people doing jobs that they don’t like at all. We were lucky enough to have music. We wanted to do other things for our personal pleasure, to feel full. So, that’s why we decided to gather and study different types of music, not only local ones. Sometimes, somebody from another place would come to us and give us some new material to study. All these things happened while I was having a more close relationship with discography and teaching. So “Labyrinth” ended up being a music production company and was transformed into a kind of music school. We also opened a music school in Petralona, Athens, but the main school “Labyrinth” was still working and at that time there were many tutors there,
Labyrinth today! The dreams for the future… The seminars are in a very good way. In the first thirteen- fourteen years we would put emphasis basically on existing traditions like Cretan music, Anatolia’s music, Horasan of Persia’s music, Afghanistan’s, North India’s which are specific traditions that come from the past and get new shape today. However, the last three years we emphasize something extra which is very important to me, the feature of contemporary and new creation. It’s not enough studying the past, but also to be able to use this material in a more creative present. This dimension is the one that starts getting features not necessarily local. For example, we have musicians that are from Crete, they play lyra, they care and love cretan music, but they also have an interest on other musical patterns that are related to Cretan music. So, this means that each and every of them can have a geographic starting spot but this is not a limitation. It is where it starts, not where it ends. In what degree and with what way music brings people from different cultures together- and maybe people from different mentality. What is your own experience?
-Are there any concerts you will participate in this summer? Of course there are concerts that I am organizing during summer. There are also some separate at Labyrinth every Friday in the garden starting from the 17th of June until the middle of September- with a concert with a variety of musicians as guests and other musicians who are tutors in the workshop. The concerts are free for public throughout summer. There is also a festival which is in 4th -7th of August for this year, on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday- and at the same time we have some plans for other concerts in different places in Crete and off- although I am not usually absent during summer due to the seminars. It is not right to miss them until they finish. But sometimes I go to some trips, but only few.

KYRVAN Kyrvan means made in Crete The small beautiful boutique in West Villafe, in the most beautiful neighborhood of New York belongs to the designers that have “Made in New York” on their labels. It has been a long time since I last saw such a “proud” brand. It is the kind of brands that stands out and has transformed the traditional and folklore style into Art. It has developed what we call artistic creation to a new revelation. KYRVAN has its base in Ierapetra, a seaside town on the island of Crete, formerly known as “Kyrva”. It is founded by three friends whose common origin and love for their local heritage inspired them to create an everyday elegant espadrille shoe handmade from traditions wefts and patterns. There is only one basic philosophy of this brand: Μake high quality shoes that stand out for their unique identity and craftsmanship, and at the same time to promote local tradi-tions and preserve the art of weaving and shoe making. Though they strive to make their products locally, they are also passionate about providing the highest quality of materials. Therefore we source the soles of our shoes from our Mediterranean neighbors in Spain, who are the original jute sole artisans. Their shoes, dressed with traditional wefts and patterns, are handmade in Crete by local artisans. Some of our fabrics come from local weaving workshops, and others are vintage traditional textiles. Each pair is one-of-a-kind and the number of pairs for each style is limited. The shoes are packaged in a traditional Cretan handmade shoulder bag called a “Vour-gia”, with braided strings and a tassel, made from 100% cotton. The Vourgia bag was tra-ditionally used by Cretan farmers to carry their food, water or wine when they went to work in the fields.

Let’s begin with the adventure seekers. Based on the quote “No pain, no gain” LIAB* suggests five beaches that might be difficult to reach but will definitely pay you off if you try! Starting with the municipality of Rethymno, the best beach to visit is Ammolofoi (hills of sand). It’s the perfect beach to gaze at the sunset while being totally relaxed and free of any kind of civilization. The reason why this beach falls into the “action” category is that it is difficult to both descend and ascend it. So, avoid midday hours because the sand is extremely hot!
Ammolofoi
Our next stop smells like Chania… The place is called “Kedrodasos”. Believe us, words are so poor to describe. Even though it s a bit difficult to reach, the beauty of Kedrodasos cannot be compared to anything! There are trees of cedar all around, making the best shade under Crete’s hot sun. Both Ammolofoi and Kedrodasos have no access to tavernas or any other kiosk for water so it is necessary to bring some on your own. Kedrodasos
Leaving from Chania, LIAB stops at the municipality of Heraklion for two suggestions. Our first beach is “Agio Faraggo” (Saint Canyon) and we strongly recommend it! There are some pros as well as cons concerning this beach. The cons are the 25-30 minutes of hiking through the canyon. 5 meters before meeting the beautiful beach, you will see a chapel with a well so you can drink water from it. Agio farrago is the perfect destination because it combines clean water and a spectacular sense of isolation. It is undoubtedly Cretans’ favourite beach.
Agio farrago
While crossing Heraklion, we stop by the “Maridaki” beach. Here, we enter a small but very picturesque and beautiful village which is full of welcoming people and small tavernas. The beach is definitely to be compared to the other beaches mentioned. Water is so clear like crystal! There is also an imposing rock hill that surrounds the beach. The reason why this beach is in the category of “action” is the difficult access to it because of the road. Maridaki
Loyal to our promise we will now move on to some other kinds of beaches that combine comfort first and will please your eyes at the same time! Starting with the municipality of Chania, “Life is a beach” suggests “Mpalos”. Its view gives the sense of being in a movie scene. The feeling is one of a kind! You can reach Mpalos by boat. It is a cool (literally) way and you can also stop for a dive into the waters of Gramvousa. Mpalos
Next stop: Elafonisos. The access is very easy. Here you can enjoy the clean water and the wellknown pink sand. It is one of the most famous beaches of Crete and of the world- better than the fame of a museum! And of course visiting a museum during our vacation is also necessary!
Elafonisos
There is also one more beach that makes us stay in the Municipality of Chania, specifically in Kasteli. Falasarna is the beach that combines accommodation, fun, and of course delicious food from the picturesque tavernas. The biggest advantage of Falasarna is the sunset. In our own words sunset is like fried potatoes. Everybody likes them. The colours during the setting are exceptionally intense and the feeling cannot be described. We like it. End of story- So, Falasarna have a hidden “weapon. Falasarna
It is difficult yet necessary to leave Chania- a place that- from our point of view has the majority of beautiful beaches- and we move on to Vai and its palm forest. The beach is full of palm trees and it is 24 kilometers away in the east from Sitia and about 6 kilometers from Palekastro. Its access is very easy and there is a variety of gastronomical choices to make, so it is absolutely necessary to visit. We shouldn’t forget mentioning that this is maybe the only beach with sand in the Municipality of Lasithi. Vai

CRETAN PEOPLE THAT INSPIRE US
Maria Nafpliotou Actress “Even though I have my grandmother’s name Maria’s from Sifnos, from the side of my father, I have the body of my mother who was from Crete. I wasn’t born there but my bondage with the island is very strong. I remember those bright years as a child there and they are so memorable. I was so cheerful and free. I still have very alive relationship with my relatives there. We are 32 cousins, maybe 36- we still argue about that. I’m sure you can imagine of our everyday life then. Every year I had the most beautiful summertime. We would play in the village, we would speak with the Cretan accent just because we didn’t want to be laughed at by the other children and get the nick name of “The Athenians”. We would also feed the pigs and clean up the barns! We were so free that no one really cared where we were all day. We were everywhere. At each house of the village each time. My village was and still is my biggest love”
Christopher Papakaliatis Film director - Actor “Crete is my shelter. My father is Cretan. I grew up in Athens since I was four years old, but Crete will always be my home. The biggest part of my family lives there, my brother, my cousins. All my memories are with no doubt associated with our vacation, Easter holidays, and summertime there.
Kostas Kaparos
Founder & Creative Director of Caparo company
I spent my childhood during summer at Nea Peramos, a suburb of Kavala and during winter I was in Rethymno. My mother is from the Nothern part of Greece and my father is Cretan. Sea and mountains. Thessaloniki and Vrisinas. Two cultures all mixed up. All my memories of the village are so free. This is how I grew up… I studied graphics in Athens and here I am… stuck in the capital city for a decade. I became a part of the TEDx Anogeia team in summer of 2014. I took on the champagne and the optical identity of the conference. After one year it still remains one of the best experiences I ever had, the people, the knowledge, the memories from that night of the 8th of August at Anogeia in the heart of Psiloritis, Saint Yakinthus. Even though this event is over, there is something that will keep this memory alive, like the design “Light your way up” which was the motto of the conference. It has been loved ever since and has been recognized successfully. It has been awarded with nine prices in Greece and abroad. 3 bronze Ermis Awards, EVGE award & praise EVGE (Greek graphic & illustration awards), 2 awards in the new designers’ competition, bronze award in the European Design Awards. It has also been hosted in electronical and printed publications around the world. The campaign narrates optically the obscurantism of our times and explains that the only way of getting to the top is with knowledge as our weapon. The heroes in this surrealistic tale for grown-ups are Zeus, Kourites, Thor, Highlanders and an imaginative Cretan guy with the moustache and the Cretan head -bandage (the text of the tale belongs to Katerina Vaimaki) . I decided to stay in Greece and not abandon her now even though I had many proposals from abroad and created the Caparos graphic company. Our job has to do with corporate and product branding as well as with the illustration.

My own Spinalonga
by Nikos Orfanos
We all know Spinalonga…that uninhabited island in the gulf of Mirabelos. Everybody! Not only Cretans. Spinalonga is one of the most visited places in Crete after Knossos. Maybe it’s the beauty of the landscape, maybe the history, the memorable feeling of walking around the Venetian walls make the visit there a unique emotional experience. Spinalonga is a moving place. As I personally experienced it, for thirteen months in a row during the filming of “The Island”, in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Thousands of people used to live there, in that dry rock. Venetian soldiers, chainides, rebels, Turkish- Cretan, leprous, and now visitors all over the world. If you stand under a shadow of the walls and gaze at the island, you can imagine of the everyday life of those people, their happiness, their sadness, the kicking out, their fights, their life, their death, you will feel like every small stone of that island is a joyful but at the same time sorrow memory, forgotten… It is the life that touched the stones and gazed what you can see now while you are thinking. The narrow paths of Elouda, hug that little rock with the immense energy. You will see the clouds covering the land and Spinalonga being spotlighted by the sun. When you leave from Agios Nikolaos, without wind and reach Plaka, with the wind blowing so badly. I am wondering, who is the one that created that otherworldly micro-climate? I prefer explaining it with my imagination than with meteorological facts interpretations. If you go to Plaka you must definitely cross the sea and get to Spinalonga. Walk all the way through the loggia and wander around the Muslim buildings that are being renovated very quickly. See the leprous’ houses. Stand across the walls in front of the old hospital and the small church. Spinalonga was a place that society didn’t want to remember, because it was thought to be a place of torture and pain and wanted to wash away everything associated to it. Luckily we found out that it was a place full of love, sympathy, dignity and of extreme beauty. And of course… it was a place full of magic! If you visit Spinalonga for once you will be drawn by something back there, again and again… whenever you step your foot on Crete. But what am I saying? Is there a place on this island that doesn’t “call you to go back”?

Historical Museum of Crete The Historical Museum of Crete is situated in a very beautiful neighborhood of Heraklion’s port. The museum was founded in 1953, with the goal of keeping the cultural heritage of Crete from the byzantine period until today safe- and of course represent it to the visitors. The building is an old neoclassical of 1903 that has been recently extended. The visitor has the chance to learn about the History and Art of the island through a modern point of view. The goal is to make the sightseeing more alive and friendly to the visitor. The use of technological applications is an example. The collections of the museum include byzantine objects, or from the period of Venetians, of Ottomans, but there are also exhibits that light up the recent history and culture like the ethnographic collection or the part of the building about the second world war. Also, some of the parts are dedicated to some special personalities that are associated to Greece like Nikos Kazantzakis, El Greco, whose pieces of art are in the museum too. House of Α. & Μ. Knossos - Archeological museum of Heraklion Just a small distance away from the town of Heraklion (5 kilometers south- east of the town) you will find the archeological place of Knossos. The palace of Knossos according to the myth was the base of the mythological king Minos, and it is the most significant spot that reminds of the great civilization that blossomed in Crete during the bronze period between 3000 BC – 1100 BC. The area was excavated initially by Minos Kalokairinos in 1878 who found the first ruins. Later, the English Arthur Evans started systematic excavations that lasted from 1900 until 1931 bringing to light the huge group of buildings of the palace. It is a very imposing building that it is expanded around a central yard and the area is around 22.000 cm. It is the administrative, religious and financial centre of the Minoan buildings of Knossos and it is one of the biggest and impressive of the three palaces found in Crete (The rest are of Festos and Malia). If you want to have a more complete opinion about the Minoan civilization ( and also see some important findings from pre-historic periods until Roman years), you can also visit the Archeological museum of Heraklion- one of the biggest museums in Greece- you will see very special and impressive exhibits just like the original wall- paintings of the Palace of Knossos or the well -known disk of Festos. Venetian walls of Heraklion Whoever visits Heraklion they will see in different spots of the town parts of old Venetian Walls which are the best preserved fortified works in the Mediterranean. The walls started being built in 1462 and were done just a few years before the fall of Heraklion by the Turkish in 1669, so the Venetian period in Crete was over. These walls are a sample of the most developed fortified buildings of that period with an innovating system of bastion and anti- bastion (there were 7 bastions on the whole) parts of which were standing out of the main building. An example of the effective function of that system is the fact that it made it repel the Turkish for 21 years in a row until the fall of Handakas (the old name of Heraklion) It is to be mentioned that the visitor can follow the route of the wall in order to watch the great view up from the bastion of Martinego (where you can see the grave of Nikos Kazantzakis with the well known proverb “I hope nothing, I am scared of nothing, I am free”) but also walk inside the tomb gates of the fortress. Some of them have already been renovated and are used as places of cultural events and exhibitions, like the Makasi loggia that is a museum of memory of the second World War (during which it was like a jail) and the Gate of Jesus, where the exhibition of N. Kazantzakis “Odyssey” is hosted.

Hand-made candles from bees-wax
First of all you will try to touch it, smell it, and then you will end up watching it with amazement. This is how it has always been and will be. The feeling of all-time purity, beauty and softness… Its history goes back to the centuries, specifically 1600-2000 ago, in the Egyptian civilization. This product has always been associated with everyday life and needs besides other bee products. Through special procedures, the honeycomb is given to people that work with love on bees-wax and produce whatever they can imagine. Like these candles! There are many patterns and shapes to choose from. The colour that best expresses that kind of candle is a combination of “honey-gold”. It is one of a kind decorative product that can express the Cretan and not only- traditional feeling of home. YOGA ON CRETE SFAKIA
The house which is the base of YogaOnCrete came into our family’s hands in the late 80s, was renovated by its interior designer owners, and has thereafter frequently hosted family and friends for holidays. In 2006, the owners’ daughter, Eugenia, decided to give this place a new spirit, and use it to host the first yoga course. Along with the yoga courses, she was hosting people who were to become friends, as well as her love for yoga and a life inspired by the principles of yoga. Over the years, the YogaOnCrete team has grown. It is this team that gives life to the - physical and metaphorical – space, which supports the practice of techniques that encourage the emergence of one’s authentic self and the joy that stems from the connection with our true essence. Each member of the YogaOnCrete team has made their own personal journey and search, along with academic graduate and post-graduate studies in different subjects (sport psychology, clinical psychology, psychoanalysis, finance, journalism, dance, fine arts). Combined, these journeys make up a colourful art-work of experience and knowledge. The yoga, dance and capoeira teachers, the massage therapist, the hiking guide, the chef, and the helping staff, are all professional at what we do. We share a deep desire to serve and love for our respective subjects, which are for most of us practices that have proven invaluable in our own experience and have helped us immensely in our own self-growth, which is why we are passionate about sharing them. While we respect the value of the service we offer and take it very seriously, we recognize that, especially nowadays, people have a deep need for simple, true connection and communication, in which laughter and a lightness of spirit can work wonders. Many say, that being on a holiday here feels more as if we have invited friends round for a holiday. And this is the one characteristic of YogaOnCrete that we value most and want to keep intact: the feeling that you are welcome, as part of a group of people of varied backgrounds but essentially very similar to you, and that we will do our best to make your experience the most precious souvenir you could ever take back home! During the summer season (June to October) we hold various courses of yoga and other holistic practices that usually last a week. Individual travellers can join and either stay in a shared or single room. Additionally, we offer B&B outside pre-scheduled course dates, and are also open to drop-ins during the courses, subject to availability. The house, outdoor yoga platform and studio at YogaOnCrete can also be rented for a private group, or by a teacher to host a yoga or other holistic practice retreat or holiday, and practice, learn and grow in a stunning location, with the care of our on site staff.
