THE COST OF LIVING BY EMILY POOLE

Let's face it, living is expensive. If paying for necessities sometimes seems like a daunting task, don't worry, you are not alone. According to most polls, money is the biggest cause of stress for Americans. Stress from money can affect your mood, sleeping patterns and even your self-esteem. The most important thing to remember is that you will be ok. There are a lot of simple things you can do at home to save money without sacrificing!

FOOD

Food is one of the most important and most expensive costs of every household. You should never eat less to try to save money, but you should try to eat and shop smarter. Plan your meals so grocery shopping covers most of your weekly food. Always utilize coupons and sales. Try not to eat out too much, but you don’t have to stop completely. Save eating out for get-togethers and special events.

LIVING GUIDE 2020

SUBSCIPTIONS UTILITIES

It's easy to let your utility bill rack up over time if you aren't paying attention to your habits. You can always contact your elecricity or water provider to see if there are any steps you can take to lower your bill. Turn off and unplug lights and other appliances when not in use. Stick to energy efficient bulbs. Open your blinds and let the sun be your light when possible. Make sure to fix any leaky faucets, and be sure to ask your landlord to cover the cost before paying to fix anything yourself.

While you shouldn't cut out all your entertainment costs, it's easy to spend too much money on subscriptions that you rarely use. Keep track of which subscriptions you get your money's worth from and which ones you could live without. Make sure to check your bank statement after you cancel a subscription to verify you aren't being charged. Try to share subscriptions with your friends and split the cost.

A Collection of Inspring Bedroom Aesthetics

b y S A R A H F R A N CI ONI

LIVING GUIDE 2020

11

SOFT 'N SWEET We typically associate the term “soft” with physically soft items, but here we discover that it can also describe the atmosphere of someone's environment. Soft spaces are usually decorated with pastels, fairy lights, art prints, classical vintage items and flowers. This room reflects the soft aesthetic perfectly, as it uses each of these decorative items. If you feel your space is a little rough around the edges and wish to soften your style up a bit, try thrifting for vintage art and decor or pick up handcut flowers on your next outing.

Everyone is familiar with the good ol' fashioned hippie, bachelor pad look. This is an easily obtained aesthetic for anyone interested in this type of style. This loft represents a chilled and cozy atmosphere that's perfect for staying in and gaming or reading. As you can see, if you hang a few tapestries, posters and art pieces, your room could be like this hippie loft in no time.

NESTLED IN NATURE A room that contains earth tones and utilizes plants as decor is usually the ideal setting for anyone who feels connected to nature. Maintaining a natural feel in your indoor environment is said to reduce anxiety and increase happiness, perfect for a bedroom. The earthly color scheme of the space featured allows for a calm atmosphere, while the plants bring a sense of liveliness. If you are looking to make a room of your own naturalistc like this one, it can be achieved by using arth tones and decorating with plants rather than objects.

Seeing a room described as a snack seems pretty weird, I know. The "granola" aesthetic basically describes someone who is super into nature and all things outdoors. This room represents this aesthetic perfectly. The photos on the wall reflect a love for the outdoors, and the knitted bed spread really sets the outdoor tone. If you are interested in replicating this aesthetic, simply get some knick knacks and photos together from outdoor trips and display them in your space. Those paired with a handmade-looking bed spread and set of curtains will really set this mood.

15

ECLECTIC A space that derives inspiration from a broad range of sources can be defined as eclectic. The term eclectic originated from the Greek word eklegein, which means "pick out." If you have an eclectic style, you'll notice that you likely never commit fully to one aesthetic in any given space. Instead you'll find yourself curating a collection of styles and morphing them into one. This space featured derives inspiration from natural, artistic and bohemian styles, ultimately creating a space that feels warm and inviting. If eclecticism is something that you wish to achieve in your own space, give some thought to styles that inspire you the most. Begin putting things together and watch your new space come to life.

When we think of someone being an old soul we don't neccessarily associate it with physical environment, however, our rooms are often a refelction of our personality. This space emulates an old soul aesthetic through the music related decor and the vintage tapestries and wall hangings. If you find that you're an old soul and wish for your room to reflect that, it can be achieved by hanging some cherished vintage items or even displaying a beloved record player.

YOUR WAY/to

/FENG SHUI by Sarah Francioni

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese tradition that practices the use of energy to harmonize one with the indoor or outdoor environment. It refers to our environments as binding forces between humanity and the universe. Some of feng shui's foundational concepts are Qi, Polarity and Bagua. Qi (ch'i) is a moveable positive and negative energy that remains essential how you want energy to move throughout your home. Polarity is the theory of yin and yang, also known as the five element theory. The five elements of feng shui are metal, earth, fire, water and wood. This concept emulates the goal of feng shui to align energy forces in one's environment. Bagua are symbols to represent the principles of human reality. A Bagua map is a map meant to be placed on top of land or one's home floor plan to evenly section off spaces for specific principles. This allows for home or land owners to arrange their space accordingly to allow for positive energy to flow through the space. (Specifics on how to use a Bagua map on the next page.) To practice feng shui there are many concepts and ideas within it to understand. There are many specific tips that can be used to further good energy in each and every room in a home., of which rely on something as simple moving an object from one space to another. Let's discuss some helpful tips.

LIVING GUIDE 2020

FURNITURE BED – You should have a clear view of the room. – Your bed should be diagonally opposite the door, never facing the door with your feet. – Something should be against your head, preferably something solid. – Avoid storage under the bed, it disrupts the energy balance between you and the ground below. – A properly placed bed is said to offer security and better sleep.

DESK – Avoid having your back to the door or a large window. – A desk should never be too close to the bed, as it reminds you on daily stress.

LIGHTING NATURAL LIGHTING – Early Birds: East-facing rooms – Night Owls: West-facing rooms – If you are lacking natural light, invest in lamps to increase lighting.

DECOR ART – Only display things that are truly meaningful to you, or they don't have a positive effect on energy. – Avoid displaying anything that reminds you of failure, as it promotes negative energy (projects, photos of exes).

MIRRORS – Mirrors stir up more energy than needed for a bedroom, as they reflect and bounce energies. – Avoid facing any mirrors toward the bed.

CLUTTER – Living in a cluttered space can manifest unwanted energies. – In clear and organized spaces, energy can flow through freely and beneficially.
