his issue has inspired the VAMP editorial team to start taking better care of ourselves. Stunning fashion and the best in make-ups and creams help us feel good and confident on the outside, but this issue really focuses on the inside too. With travel, food and architecture themed around Sweden, there is an inevitable urge to return to nature and keep it simple. ‘Feed Your Head’ (page 104) offers insight on vitamin and food supplements that most of us need to improve energy levels and concentration. Articles ‘L’enfer est plein de bonnes volontés et désirs’ (page 023), ‘Bad Company’ (Page 083), and ‘Power of Now’ (page 096) force us to consider notions that we’re often too busy to think about. A healthy dose of this season’s fashion eye candy and fun, bright clothes for the kids balance out this issue, bringing you an over-all positive kick-start to the autumn/winter season.

GALDERMA In no other area of aesthetics are there so many different products or treatment options available as dermal fillers. Along with botulinum toxin injections, fillers are the bread and butter of most medical aesthetic clinics, with their popularity soaring as public awareness and acceptance of non-surgical enhancement grows. People who have vitiligo begin losing skin pigment on their peripheries. It’s not painful, nor contagious, but the skin colour is gradually lost over the years, while the individual doesn’t feel any symptoms. The condition may be discovered at any age. The skin harvesting procedure presents itself with a very fast and effective approach where clients need no essential preparation. Treatment takes an average of 60 minutes and the discomfort is minimal. The motive of the treatment is to transfer pigment (colour) of the skin to the affected areas by means of a harvesting system. Results are visible in a few weeks. A consultation is primarily carried out for an adequate assessment to discuss feasibility of treatment procedure and outcomes. HUMANITY
A question humanity repeatedly debates: Are humans inherently good or bad? VAMP explores what may be a fine line. Words: Gina Camilleri Do we humans have a fundamentally good nature that is corrupted by society, or a basically bad nature that is kept in check by society? A good place to start searching for fundamental characteristics is in babies, as they have the absolute minimum cultural influence. They are friendless, education-less and as a result, totally unequipped to hide their instinctual behaviour. While babies can’t articulate their thoughts and feelings, they can show us what they want or like by reaching, staring, and reacting. Researchers at Yale University carried out an experiment in which they exposed the inherent reactions of babies. Encouragingly, the results of these experiments suggest that even babies have a sense of right or wrong, and an instinct to prefer good over evil. The first part of the experiment consisted of a puppet show - the stage depicted a bright green hill, while the puppets were attractive shapes (a square, circle, and triangle, which did not make human sounds or display human emotions) in bright colours. One of the shapes tried to climb up the hill, but struggled and kept falling down. The other shapes came to help the one that was in need by aiding from different sides to reach a successful result. >> Words: Jaque Roberts

HUMANITY
“Does an evil action have to be premeditated in order to be evil?”
The surmise by the experimenters was that this action could be explained if the babies were reading the events of the show in terms of motivations. The actions showed to the infant that the shape pushing uphill wanted to help out (and so is nice) and that the shape that kept falling downhill wanted to cause problems (and so is not nice).
they thought of the outcome. If the climber moved towards the hinderer, the infants looked significantly longer than if the climber moved towards the helper. This is understandable if the infants were surprised when the climber approached the hinderer. Moving towards the helper shape would be the happy ending, which is was what the infant expected. If the climber moved towards the hinderer it was a surprise, as much as an adult would be surprised if we saw someone give a hug to someone who had just knocked someone else over.
In another experiment by the same group, infants saw another scene in which the climber shape made a choice to move towards either the helper shape or to the hinderer shape. The amount of time that the infants spent looking in each of the two cases revealed what
These experiments could suggest that pre-cultural brained infants have expectations about how people should behave. Not only do they interpret the movement of the shapes as resulting from motivations, but they prefer helping motivations over hindering ones.
After the puppet show, the infants were given the choice of either reaching for the helping or the hindering shape. The result is that they were much more likely to reach for the helper.

There is a proverb that says, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” The saying is thought to have originated from Saint Bernard of Clairvaux who wrote (c. 1150), “L’enfer est plein de bonnes volontés et désirs” (hell is full of good wishes and desires). One meaning of the phrase is that humans may have the intention to undertake good actions, but nevertheless fail to take action, whether due to procrastination, laziness or other subversive vice. The saying is an admonishment that a good intention is meaningless unless followed through. A different interpretation of the saying is that good intentions, when acted upon, may have unforeseen bad consequences. So herein lies the question: Does an evil action have to be premeditated in order to be evil? >>

HUMANITY According to various legal systems, laws categorising murders into first, second and third degrees generally require that first degree murders include three basic elements: wilfulness, deliberation and premeditation. Does that mean that murder in itself is not evil? If it unintentionally happens, does this make it less evil? In turn, is it innate in humans to murder? In the song Folsom Prison Blues, Johnny Cash contemplates his crimes as he sits in prison listening to the sounds of a passing train and sings about how he “shot a man in Reno, just
to watch him die”. Is this convicted killer a truly evil man, or just a man that acted out an innate impulse, and got caught? According to US Sargent Steve “Pappy” Papenfuhs, ‘I know many [police men] who harbour resentments against those whom they feel have done them harm. Many of us are not immune from the hope that negative consequences will befall those nemeses of ours. Some want revenge; others just wish for “karmic closure”… Some argue that due to natural selection, the human species is actually hardwired for killing. According to Phillips Laboratory at the University of Oregon, natural selection has imprinted the capacity to commit murder on the human psyche because killing has conferred such powerful advantages in terms of the overall fitness of our species. Slaying a rival could give an individual better access to mates or heighten their status. In the lawless Pleistocene epoch, when modern human minds were forged, a capacity to kill represented a useful behavioural gambit.’ 028 S W E D E N I S S U E
Regarded by many as the foundation of moral behaviour, empathy depends on the ability to share the emotions of others - to “feel” what other people feel. New research by neuroscientist Jean Decety suggests an interesting neurological link between our own, first-hand experience of pain and our perception of pain in other people. When typically developing children (aged 7-12 years) were presented with images of people getting hurt, the kids experienced more activity in the same neural circuits that process first-hand experiences of pain (Decety 2008). This automatic response, termed “mirroring”, has been documented in
a number of other studies, including studies of adults (Lamm 2011; Jackson 2006). The phenomenon may reflect the activation of mirror neurons - nerve cells that fire both when a person performs an action and he sees that action being performed by others. Therapist Douglas LaBier regularly sees what he calls empathy deficit disorder (EDD) - the lack of one’s ability to “step outside themselves and tune in to what other people experience”. It’s suggestive that EDD develops when people focus too much on acquiring power, status and money for themselves at the expense of developing healthy relationships. With a world that is becoming increasingly materialistic and powerdriven, it may very well be that the amount of people who are lacking empathy are increasing rapidly. Perhaps it is the power motives that are common to all human beings. This quest for power is capable of corrupting humans to “break bad” and do what is
required to attain that power, regardless of the moral consequences. Steve “Pappy” Papenfuhs writes, ‘It has been opined that the difference between criminal psychopaths and the rest of us is in degree, rather than in kind. Two recent and somewhat similar experiences, both caught on video, may serve to demonstrate whether the unpromising or the “better angels of our nature” prevail. A motorcyclist was involved in a collision with a car and became trapped under it. The vehicle caught fire. The heroic efforts of a group of bystanders saved the life of the cyclist when they acted as a team and lifted the car, thus freeing the trapped rider. The same month, across the country, another motorcyclist was trapped beneath a car after a collision. In this case, a large group of bystanders stood by and videotaped the ensnared biker with their cell phones rather than coming to his aid. Although the second collision may not have felt the same sense of urgency since there was no fire, a bystander could clearly be heard on the tape suggesting that the group try to lift the car. No one followed his lead and the rider remained trapped until the arrival of emergency personnel.’ The refrain in Johnny Cash’s song goes, “When I was just a baby / my momma told me son / always be a good boy / don’t ever play with guns.” Although apparently having a good parent, he murdered a man simply to satisfy some uncontrollable curiosity. While the answer of whether humans are inherently good or bad will probably never be truly known, one day we may discern whether what we deem as psychopathy is genetic, environmental, developmental, or some combination thereof. HUMOUR We all know (although few of us like to admit it) that we women are more prone to being irritated than most men. I like to think that this is due to the fact that we are the more perceptive sex and therefore see what they choose to ignore or simply cannot see at all. Sexist? Maybe. True? I like to think so. Unfortunately, the truth is that I am part of a species that seems to be facing extinction. As ironic as it may seem, moaning is frowned upon nowadays and more people are opting for the positive, cheerful outlook on life that comes with the Power of Attraction manual probably provided at all yoga beginner classes. But I for one, refuse to succumb to the lure of ‘happy-clappiness’ and as I’m sure I’m not alone, here’s a couple of pet peeves which I am sure many others are vexed by too… 1. Arms hanging out of car windows.
something very worrying when normal words are distorted when speaking to babies, in the hope, it seems, to make those words more ‘baby-friendly’. You can baby-proof your home but that doesn’t mean you should baby-proof your language too. Adding the ‘eee’ sound to most words doesn’t make it any cuter, it just sounds weird and to
The moans and groans of Amber Jones.
Although it does not directly have an impact on my well-being, it irks me to see so many Maltese drivers with their right arm hanging lifelessly out of their car window. It simply looks so wrong and let’s face it, uncomfortable. In an attempt to try and find a reason for its growing popularity, I decided to try it myself and, stuck in traffic in a location I hoped nobody would recognise me, I let my arm hang loose out of the window. Besides the fact that it felt as awkward as it looks and wasn’t at all relaxing, I felt like a complete twat sat there with my arm looking as though it had a life of its own flopping out of my window. It felt primitive and I could find no reason why anybody would want to willingly do it. It merely confirmed my belief that Neanderthals are still amongst us.
people like me, very annoying. A dog is a dog and not a ‘doggies’, those animals with fins and gills are not ‘fishies’ and Black Beauty is not a ‘horsey’.
2. Baby Talk .
3. Cataclysmic names.
There is something very cute about hearing a fully-functioning adult cooing over a new-born and murmuring otherwise meaningless sounds to get a smile out of child. There is however,
There is no better adjective that can be used for the name-giving tendencies on our islands, than Cataclysmic since it is precisely that… severely destructive (at least for the poor child). Quite often
our local newspapers issue articles about the local trends in names given to babies and it is always painful to read. What is even more painful than reading, however, is actually hearing these poor children being called in public. We’ve all become a bit immune to the celebrity names and surnames being used as a first name followed by the actual family’s surnames but when the name of a character of a fantasy movie has been used, you know that they’ve gone just that little bit too far. Of course, each to his own, however can you imagine spending all your life with a name like Cleavage? I think not! 4. Dungarees. Whether they are ‘in’ or not according to fashionistas, in my opinion they have as much ‘cool’ factor as socks and sandals. I don’t know why, maybe it’s a stereotype I remember from my childhood, but when I think of dungarees, the things that come to mind are builders, scarecrows, couples painting their newly-bought homes and pregnant women. Besides making you look frumpy and drab, they make you look like a telly tubby unless they are skintight in which case they are rammed up places they shouldn’t be. Bottom line… they should be sabotaged completely. 5. Ex-smokers. Whether they’ve ditched the habit thanks to Allan Carr’s hefty paperbacks, hypnotherapy or good old willpower, good for them. It’s admirable especially since I, for one, couldn’t and don’t want to do it. But why is that they are more intolerant than people who have never smoked at all? Surely they know what it’s like since they’ve “been there and done that”? I find the holier than thou attitude of most ex-smokers irksome and tedious. You quit, well done, now let the rest of us get on with, it even if that means smoking in the extremely limited spaces available to us. V

WELL- BEING
HAVING DIFFERENT SEX PARTNERS CAN RESULT IN A TRANSFERENCE OF BAD ENERGY. VAMP EXPLORES TAKING CARE OF OUR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL ENERGIES THROUGH CLEANSING. Words: Ellis Martin
N
Never sleep with someone you wouldn’t want to be. Intimacy at a sexual level intertwines your aural energy with the aural energy of the other person. These powerful connections, regardless of how insignificant you think they are, leave spiritual debris, particularly within people who do not practice any type of cleansing – physical, emotional or otherwise. “ A good way to gage if you’re intimate with the right person is to ask yourself: Do I think highly enough of that person to want to be like him or her? Never sleep with someone you wouldn’t want to be.
Imagine the confused aura of someone who sleeps with multiple people and carries around these multiple energies? What they may not realise is that others can feel that energy which can repel positive energy and attract negative energy into your life.” - Lisa Chase Patterson It’s not an esoteric statement any longer to consider that beyond physical beings, we are energetic beings. Ever since we were pushed out of that primordial canal, we have been in search of light. No one seeks or goes towards the darkness. It is light that we are forever in pursuit of - right up until the very end. Everything in this world, from plants to a glass of water, is made of energy. You’ve got slow moving
energy - the tangible; your computer, the table, the desk weight. Then you’ve got fast-paced energy, which is far vaster, and all around us, yet undetectable by any of our five senses; microwave zaps, satellite transmissions. We know that these energies exist, and have become very much reliant on them, yet we can’t see them. In turn, we possess energetic boundaries that are also composed of fast-moving, unseen energy, that prevents us from being overwhelmed by them all. Throughout history and across all cultures, intuitives, healers, visionaries, and shamans have been able to perceive the energetic fields that science is only now coming to comprehend and study. >>

WELL- BEING
“NEVER SLEEP WITH SOMEONE YOU WOULDN’T WANT TO BE.” Our chakras are one of the three systems that link our physical and spiritual energies and interact to form our overall energetic anatomy. Beyond this, there are various types of energy fields that link our inner self with the outer world, inclusive of the auric field. The chakras are energy receptors or holders, located mainly inside of the body. The fields, expanding bubbles or circles of light, are found outside of our body, emanating from our skin to several feet away. These fields compose our energetic boundaries. They listen to the data in our chakras and other energy centres to determine which information to bring from outside to inside of us. There are various layers or energy boundaries extending from the body. Some of these fields perform specific activities, ranging from protecting us from dangers to attracting people to us. The most well-known field is the auric field. It’s believed that our auric field is the same as our electromagnetic field; a continually emerging and fluctuating field of energy
086 S W E D E N I S S U E
produced by the electrical currents in our bodies. Every cell in our body pulses with electricity. Electricity produces magnetism, which means that every cell and organ, as well as the entirety of our body, generates energy fields. These fields are interactive; they both take in and emit energy. This is an explanation for being able to sense a persona when we first interact with a person that walks into our space. Our energetic fields respond to trauma and healing energies. Science can locate the heart field from at least four to six feet away from the body, which means we’re able to exchange energy with others near us, but we can also swap energy with people hundreds of miles away. As quantum physics is proving, once two particles or people have met, they remain connected forever. That’s how some know what’s happening to their friend who they haven’t talked with for months or how some sense the exact moment a faraway loved one dies. The fields also react to emotions and love; when two people interrelate, their energy fields blur and merge.
Electromagnetic energies are are all made of photons, the unit of energy that creates light. This means that everything composed of electromagnetic energy is light, including our energetic fields - and us ourselves. Research is revealing that we are made of and surrounded by photons. Our DNA is, in fact, a biophoton machine; a mechanism responding to the light outside and inside of us. Not only are we made of light, but we also generate light. That personal, literal light radiates from deep within our bodies. It also streams right through from outside to the inside of us, not stopping for skin or clothing. Because we consist of light, our energetic boundaries are nothing more or less than light. Our auric field actually consists of twelve different bands of light, each band operating at a different frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum. We determine these frequencies through colour. >>
WELL- BEING Our energies merge and mingle when we interact, and particularly on a much more intense level when we merge sexually. Any time we are intimate with another person, we absorb some of their energy and they absorb some of ours. If you have sex with good, affectionate, warming people – that lovely energy is absorbed and uplifts you. If you have sex with negative, defeatist, volatile, depressive people – that energy will weigh on you and manifest in various negative ways. Keep in mind that those who sleep with various people absorb their energies. In turn, these absorbed energies will mix with yours, and vice versa. Unless these energies are cleansed on a regular basis, you will be getting intimate with whomever your sexual encounter has been intimate with. Christians refer to this connection as “soul ties”. Although The Bible doesn’t use the exact term, it speaks of them when it talks about souls being knit together, becoming one flesh. It speaks of the ties between married couples drawing them together like magnets, while soul ties between “fornicators” can draw people together to create a negative one. It has been said that in the demonic world, unholy soul ties can serve as bridges between two
people to pass demonic refuse through. This mergence of energy is also widely explored in the study of Tantric Sex.
OPTIONS FOR CLEANSING
As we accumulate unwanted energies in daily life, regular aura cleansing supports health and well-being. Like emotional dust rags, we go around collecting debris on our aura, until we finally do something to cleanse it. It can be thought of as personal hygiene. If you don’t bathe, your body will become dirtier and dirtier. Gradually you smell. Eventually, your body even becomes a breeding ground for disease and bacteria. If you do not cleanse your aura, your spiritual energy system will also become a breeding ground for dirty energy. Your energy system will begin to attract lower vibrations which are also unhealthy for you and others. Eventually you become negative for others to be around, though they and you may not consciously understand why.
Swimming Sea water contains salt and minerals, so it’s especially useful for drawing minor psychic debris out of an aura.
Different approaches to aura cleansing will support you in clearing different aspects of your energy system. Some aura clearing approaches are more thin, like changing clothes, or putting on deodorant. They help, but they won’t replace bathing. Other methods of aura cleansing go much deeper – like having a long shower, or going for a detoxifying spa treatment.
THE LIGHTWEIGHTS
Sunlight Light attracts light. Exposure to sunlight stimulates the flow of our own energy, and some lower vibrations cannot exist with exposure to bright light. Gardening or Being in Nature Coming in direct contact with the earth helps us get grounded and release unwanted energies out of the system. Creativity Enthusiastically creating something releases a ‘creative high’. These surges of creative energy stimulate the flow of our own energy and support us in releasing blocks and unwanted energies.
OPTIONS FOR CLEANSING THE HEAVYWEIGHTS Aura Meditation It has been established that even basic meditation helps us relax and release. Aura meditation works directly with releasing unwanted energies through grounding, clearing the aura, energy channels and chakras. One of the most powerful ways to cleanse and care for the aura is energy-based aura meditation. Aura Healings In an aura healing, the healer supports in cleansing unwanted energies out of the system. The healer helps to ground out psychic debris, releasing blocks and helps get the body’s own energy flowing. One form of this is the now commonly known Reiki. Aura Readings When we mistake other people’s energy for our own, we do not want to release it. We hold on to it because we think it’s ours. An aura reader can help identify which energies are ours and which are foreign. When we recognise that an energy is not ours, it’s much easier to release. Feeling Emotions When emotional energy is blocked, it creates congestion and back-up throughout the spiritual energy system. This makes it easy to get stuck with unwanted energies. A release of energy will be found when when we allow ourselves to feel hidden emotions, which will create a movement and flow that supports in cleansing psychic debris. V

SHOREDITCHBASED ARTISTS TIM NOBLE AND SUE WEBSTER ESSENTIALLY ASSEMBLAGE RUBBISH AND THEN POINT LIGHT AT IT TO CREATE PROJECTED SHADOWS. VAMP TAKES A LOOK AT THE FASCINATINGLY TALENTED ARTIST COUPLE (NOW NON-COUPLE) THAT MADE IT BIG QUICK.
T
his is what the B-I-OG-R-A-P-H-Y section of their website says (after the home page welcoming viewers with “WELCOME MOTHERFU**ERS”): “The art of projection is emblematic of transformative art. The process of transformation, from discarded waste, scrap metal or even taxidermy creatures to a recognisable image, echoes the idea of ‘perceptual
psychology’ - a form of evaluation used for psychological patients.“Artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster are familiar with this process and how people evaluate abstract forms. Throughout their careers they have played with the idea of how humans perceive abstract images and define them with meaning. The result is surprising and powerful, as it redefines how abstract forms can transform into figurative ones.
“Parallel to their shadow investigations, Noble & Webster have created a series of light sculptures that reference iconic pop culture symbols represented in the form of shop-front-type signage and carnival shows inherent of British seaside towns, Las Vegas and Times Square. With the aid of complex light sequencing these signs perpetually flash and spiral out messages of everlasting love, and hate. >>

“Noble & Webster have created a remarkable group of anti-monuments in their eighteen-year career, mixing the strategies of modern sculpture and the attitude of punk to make art from anti-art. Their work derives much of its power from its fusion of opposites, form and anti-form, high culture and anti-culture, male and female, craft and rubbish, sex and violence. “In 2009, Noble & Webster were awarded Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Art at Nottingham Trent University in recognition of their contribution to contemporary British Art and their radical influence on younger generations of artists. In 2007, they were awarded the ARKEN Prize at Arken, Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen for outstanding contribution to the international scene of contemporary art, in the same year their critically acclaimed project Polymorphous Perverse at the Freud Museum was nominated for the prestigious South Bank Prize.
“Toxic Schizophrenia (Hyper Version) their first permanent public sculpture was unveiled at Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, May 2009. Previously the public art installation Electric Fountain, was exhibited at Rockefeller Plaza, New York, February 2008. In 2009 the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery selected The Head of Isabella Blow for inclusion to its permanent collection. “Since their first solo show in London, British Rubbish in 1996, Noble & Webster have enjoyed international recognition with solo exhibitions throughout the world.” NOBLE & WEBSTER ON… …Damien Hirst and the other artists in the Young British Artists circle: “We’re grateful to Damien Hirst. Without him and people like him there wouldn’t be an art world in England. In 1988 he started to promote the aesthetic of do-
it-yourself, in the spirit of punk. And we didn’t have to wait for recognition. It happened when we were relatively young.” …selling work: “I think every artist in London in one way or another makes a career for themselves. For us making art is like a small business. At first we didn’t even conceive that we could make a living from art. Twenty years ago, when we’d just started, it didn’t even enter anyone’s head that such a thing was possible. When our year graduated, everyone signed on the dole. We avoided permanent jobs because we wanted to get up in the morning and be creative. I remember what a shock it was when we first sold a work.” >>

…working together and their marriage split:
…their shadow installations appealing to the public:
“We’re two separate artists who simply work together. We sign our works with two names but even so we try to be different.”
“If a work makes people look and listen to their own feelings that’s good. Viewers often see our works as tricks. At first they think that the shadows are drawn on the wall. Then they suspect that we use slide projection. The fact that we make them with our own hands delights people. They think ‘I could do something like that too!’”
“It got to the point last year where we had to separate. We don’t live together anymore. It was just getting too intense and something had to give. We couldn’t give the work up so we had to give up the relationship. You either become one side of a personality and you become a slave to it, or you both go and cultivate your weird things and then bring that together, which is much better.” “I wish I had a really nice husband who wasn’t involved in the art world, who was an accountant or something. A sugar daddy that I could go home and cook for. Someone that also might buy me a drink at the bar.”

… their first piece, ‘Ornament in Crisis’, in which Tim was submerged in a fish tank and almost died. “We drilled a hole in the bottom and he was breathing through this little pipe while trying to be calm and be an ornament. But the little piece of cable he was meant to breathe through was being blocked up with condensation, so his air flow was reduced over the 20-minute filming period, to the point where he couldn’t breathe anymore, but the camera was still rolling.
We didn’t have a get-out clause, so when he spat the thing out, he was trapped with his head inside the fish tank, and I panicked and tried to smash the tank against a brick wall with his head still in it. I could’ve broken his neck.” …discovering the sharp shadows made from random rubbish: “We used to make things out of lights, almost like Blackpool illuminations or Las Vegas, casting extraordinary shadows around the room. Sue walked in one day and her shadow was cast upon the wall. It was just this fantastically sharp, perfect image of her. I just drew around it and it evolved from that really. We started fiddling with bits of stuff on the floor to make a sculpture. When it came to doing our first little show, we weren’t even going to put the shadow piece in - it felt kind of cringeworthy. Of course, someone picked on it and said, ‘Wow, what’s that?’” V

POWER OF NOW

POWER OF NOW
“LIFE IS A PREPARATION FOR THE FUTURE; AND THE BEST PREPARATION FOR THE FUTURE IS TO LIVE AS IF THERE WERE NONE.” – ALBERT EINSTEIN
I
wake up at night worrying about things. I worry about work in the morning; the bills I have to pay by the end of the month, the rift potentially caused by the last argument I had with my wife. I worry that I am not reaching my full potential as a man, and that maybe I never will. I worry that if I don’t start exercising more, I will have to leave my children early.
This emotional baggage causes insecurities and misperceptions. Think about what it would feel like to be emotionally reborn each day. If we could travel through our lives fresh and emotionally baggage free, we would eradicate a lot of this superfluous mental pain. If we had no past events in our lives that made us distrustful, suspicious or cynical, we would take things simply as they are.
When my eyes snap open to these truly useless thoughts, I realise that I am anguishing over all of it in a comfortable bed with my wife asleep next to me, while a roof is over our heads protecting us from the elements. My stomach is full and my children are asleep and safe in the rooms next to ours. This is when I agree with myself to just be okay with what I have at this very moment: shelter, food, health and love. I stop worrying about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow.
Not only does living in the present have a dramatic effect on emotional wellbeing, but it can also impact physical health. It’s long been known that the amount of mental stress we carry can have a detrimental impact on us. If we’re living in the present, we’re living in acceptance. We’re accepting life as it is now, not as how we wish it would have been. When we’re living in acceptance, we realise that everything is complete as it is. We can forgive ourselves for the mistakes we’ve made, and we can have peace knowing that everything that should happen will.
It’s not physically possible to live in the past or future, only the present. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow don’t really exist because the present can only be created by our thoughts. According to Eckhart Tolle, author of ‘The Power of Now’, people’s insistence that they have control of their life is an illusion “that only brings pain”. We carry the past with us like a heavy suitcase. This is the baggage that causes miscommunication and misunderstandings. So much of emotional human suffering is through the anxiety of what we imagine to be true rather than what really is. George Bernard Shaw wrote once, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”
It’s difficult to focus on living in the now if we have the mentality that we should sacrifice for the pursuit of our goals, which is how many of us have been brought up. Farmers will never have crops if they don’t sow their fields. Doctors will never become doctors if they don’t study medicine. However, cultivating mindfulness, being present in our own lives and being conscious of life as it happens does not mean that we are not creating a better future for ourselves. People tend to be more effectively productive when they’re mindful. By being present everything is enjoyed more; food, friends, family, the world. Further to this, if a farmer
is focusing on the one task of sowing his crops rather than worrying about a possible drought next year, the sowing will be done better. If a student of medicine is studying without the worry of failing, they will inarguably study better. The worst part about living in the past or the future is that we’re giving up our personal power. If we’re not living now, we’re giving up our life and surrendering our power to create. If we’re living in the past, we can’t do anything about it, it’s gone. If we’re worrying about the future, we’re living somewhere that doesn’t exist because it hasn’t happened yet. If we want to change our life, the only place we can do it is in the present. But first we need to accept life as it is. Too often we identify ourselves with our thoughts and we believe that we are the dialogue inside our mind. Author Eckhart Tolle writes about the “painbody” consisting of trapped life-energy that has split off from a person’s total energy field, which has temporarily gained control through the unnatural process of mind identification. “Pain can only feed on pain. Pain cannot feed on joy. It finds it quite indigestible… Many people live with a tormentor in their head that continuously attacks and punishes them, draining them of vital energy. It is the cause of untold misery and unhappiness.” We are much more than just our thoughts - we are the force that moves through our mind, spirit and body. A lot of us keep hearing about the importance of meditation, yet don’t feel like we have the time for it. Try to make cleaning and cooking become your meditation. They’re both good ways to practice mindfulness, and can be performed every day. Put your entire mind into the tasks, concentrate, and do them slowly and completely. Keep practicing, and when you ask yourself, “What should I do now, Self?” The answer should be, “keep practicing”.

To stop worrying about the future and focus more on the present, learn to recognise when you’re doing this, and then practice bringing yourself back to the present. Just focus on what you’re doing right now, at this very moment.
“What day is it?” “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favourite day,” said Pooh.
Pa
It might seem absolutely impossible, but spend at least five minutes every day doing nothing but sitting in silence. Become aware of your thoughts and try to quiet them. Focus on your breathing and notice the world around you. Become comfortable with the silence and stillness. As you focus your attention on your breath, you’ll notice that your breath is neither voluntary or involuntary. When you focus and think about your breath, you come back into relationship with reality, because like breath, reality is both something you do and something that “does you”. It’s co-creative. Practice conscious breathing to bring your mind back to the present.
However, could it really ever be said better than by Winnie the Pooh?

By doing less, the things we single-task on can be done more slowly, more completely and with more concentration. It’s hard to imagine trying to do less but it can be done. It’s a matter of prioritising: figuring out what’s important, and letting go of what’s not. Manage your schedule so that you always have time to complete each task. Don’t schedule things close together - instead, leave room between things on your schedule. This offers a more relaxed schedule, and leaves space in the event that one task takes longer than planned.
Walt Whitman once wrote, “Happiness, not in another place but this place...not for another hour, but this hour.”
54
We live in a reality where multi-tasking has become more than necessary. There’s a Zen proverb that goes, “When walking, walk. When eating, eat”. To live presently, it’s important to slowly and deliberately do one thing at a time. Don’t rush the one thing at a time. Move slowly and make your actions deliberate. Focus on the task.

In your face We’ve come along way looks-wise from our ancestors. Between 800,000 and 200,000 years ago, rapid changes in the earth climate coincided with a tripling in the size of the human brain and skull, leading to a flattening of the face. Now, with race union and our obsession with technology, how might the face physiological features of human beings change in the future?
?
“The man of the future will be of mixed race. Today’s races and classes will gradually disappear owing to the vanishing of space, time, and prejudice. The EurasianNegroid race of the future, similar in its appearance to the Ancient Egyptians, will replace the diversity of peoples with a diversity of individuals.” - Count Richard Nikolaus von Coudenhove-Kalergi, 1925, Practical Idealism
SHRINKING BRAINS Our brains have been shrinking over the last 30,000 years. The average volume of the human brain has decreased from 1,500 cubic centimetres to 1,350 cubic centimetres, which is equivalent to a chunk the size of a tennis ball. The Neanderthal: a large-brained, well-adapted species of human that went extinct nevertheless, yielding the Eurasian continent to anatomically modern humans, who began to migrate out of Africa some 60,000 years ago.
Sources: National Geographic, Wikipedia
Mixed races: A white/Chinese woman and a black/ Korean man.
Mixed, mixed races: A Filipino/ Chinese/Spanish/Indian/Hungarian/ German Jew woman and a Japanese/ Jewish/ Ukrainian man.
Artist and researcher Nickolay Lamm has partnered with expert on computational genomics, Dr. Alan Kwan’s hypotheses to illustrate what we might look like 20,000, 60,000, and 100,000 years in the future.
There are several different conclusions: We could in fact be getting dumber. Historically, brain size decreased as societies became larger and more complex, suggesting that the safety net of modern society negated the correlation between intelligence and survival. But another, more encouraging theory says our brains are shrinking not because we’re getting dumber, but because smaller brains are more efficient (like phones and computers). This theory suggests that, as they shrink, our brains are being rewired to work faster but take up less room. There’s also a theory that smaller brains are an evolutionary advantage because they make us less aggressive beings, allowing us to work together to solve problems, rather than tear each other to shreds.

Feed your head > FOCUSING ON NOURISHING YOUR BODY WITH THE RIGHT ELEMENTS NOT ONLY HELPS US PHYSICALLY, BUT ALSO MENTALLY. VAMP FOCUSES ON THE VITAMIN AND FOOD SUPPLEMENTS THAT MOST OF US NEED MORE OF TO IMPROVE OUR ENERGY LEVELS, CONCENTRATION AND THAT OVER-ALL FEEL-GOOD FACTOR.
WHAT YOU WANT MORE OF: Omega-3 fatty acids, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng
does your body need these fatty acids to function, but also they deliver some big health benefits.
When it comes to fat, there’s one type you don’t want to cut back on: omega-3 fatty acids. Two crucial ones - EPA and DHA are primarily found in certain fish. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), another omega-3 fatty acid, is found in plant sources such as nuts and seeds. Not only
Omega-3 fatty acids improve learning and memory. Research shows that children who received omega-3 fatty acid supplements did better in school, scored higher on tests of learning and memory, and had fewer behavioural problems than their peers who didn’t get the supplement.
106 S W E D E N I S S U E
Omega-3 also protects against depression, other mood disorders, and schizophrenia, and improves mood in people who already have depression. They also fight agerelated cognitive decline due to dementia. Ginkgo biloba and ginseng both help improve mental performance in terms of attention, concentration and memory. >>
HEALTH
THE SUPPLEMENTS: Efamol Efamol Brain is a unique blend of fish and evening primrose oils which contain LCP’s (long chain polyunsaturates) including DHA and EPA (Omega-3 fatty acids) and GLA and AA (omega-6 fatty acids). It is an excellent source of Omega-3 nutrients, particularly DHA which contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision. Gincosan®. Vitalise Gincosan® is a good choice for brainworkers of every age who want to improve mental performance or prevent age-related memory problems, such as lack of concentration and lack of alertness or mental “fogginess”, students, businessmen and women, seniors and anyone who has to multi-task. The product is a natural combination of extracts from ginkgo biloba and ginseng, which will help improve cognitive functions, particularly those related to memory and mental performance, like mental capacity and endurance. It also helps prevent mental fatigue and improves retention of information, and reduces forgetfulness.
GET IT FROM FOODS: For Omega-3 fatty acids: Salmon (amongst various other types of fish), Flaxseed oil, Edamame, Walnuts For Ginkgo biloba: Gingko seeds For Ginseng: There are no natural food sources of ginseng.
ENERGY, ENDURANCE & IMMUNITY WHAT YOU WANT MORE OF: Panax ginseng, Vitamin C Traditionally, Panax ginseng has been used as an adaptogen, to support adrenal health, energy and to enhance physical capacities during times of stress. It energises and invigorates the body, strengthens the immune system, and improves physical performance, endurance, stamina and fitness. Panax ginseng also assists in recovery from states of fatigue and exhaustion so it’s ideal for those who require additional energy in their day and for those who are physically active. It improves oxygen uptake and endurance; increases fitness and shortens recovery time. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and its main function in the body is to act as an electron donor. The body needs vitamin C to make L-carnitine, which helps burn fat for energy. Researchers have reported that fatigue was one of the first signs of vitamin C depletion.
THE SUPPLEMENTS: Ginsana® (G115) Ginsana® (G115) is clinically proven to increase energy, endurance, and improve immune function. Ginsana contains a unique extract of Panax ginseng (G115) that has 35 years of scientific investigation and clinical use behind it. ocated on a long and narrow site which extends between a road and the water, Six Walls House has been designed in such a way as to make the most out of its location’s generous views over the sea and surrounding nature.
Arrhov Frick Architects say, “Perhaps as a contrast to the context, we wanted to build the house around a robust and clear material so concrete blocks with cement plaster became an important part. Simple geometry and detailing have been essential in order to build the house within a tight budget.” The house’s name derives from its most prominent design feature, the six 5.4 metre-high parallel walls located along the waterfront promenade. The walls are anchored to a closed wall to the north, which offers both privacy and unobstructed views of the sea. The walls also serve to form the house’s structure and to separate the different rooms and living areas. >>

Between some of the six walls there are casted slabs that divide the rooms horizontally. The room dimensions and relationships were tested and developed with care during the process, the result of which is a sequence of different types of spaces with specific characteristics. Wooden panels are seen covering the ceilings and gauzy curtains filtering the light. The dining area is intimate, while the generous living room offers abundant light. The bathrooms are generously sized, and all of the bedrooms support balconies. A spiral staircase in the middle of the house leads to a mezzanine level and from there to a secluded roof terrace, where one can relax high up amongst the evergreen tree tops. Following a minimal design approach with simple geometry, the architects have created a living space that is all about calmness and privacy. V

he design proposal addresses the client’s brief in several ways: It links the various spaces together, providing shelter from the elements, while allowing for light and natural ventilation into the rooms directly adjoining this outdoor corridor. It is a flexible space that celebrates the human scale and can undergo transformation when required,
while remaining accessible at all times. The architectural screen also acts as a vibrant backdrop to the various activities that take place in the courtyard, creating a new identity for this organisation. The space is approached along its main axis via a dark passageway. The strength of the natural light available in the courtyard, its dramatic
variation throughout the course of the day comment and its interaction with the building planes and volumes has been explored. Inspired by the biblical narrative of the burning bush that is closely linked to the origins of Dar Tal-Providenza, the design proposes a colourful installation of 120 vertical metal fins. >>

AS TWILIGHT DESCENDS UPON THE COURTYARD, THE DAYTIME ACTIVITIES CEASE AND THE ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING SUBTLY TRANSFORMS THE AREA INTO A SPACE FOR RECOLLECTION AND MEDITATION.
The fins connect, screen and redefine the spaces, forming a semi-private outdoor corridor between the buildings and the central open space. They are expressed in bold, bright red and orange colours that gradually transform into more muted yellow tones, creating a linear rhythm and imparting a joyous feeling to the space. This energetic rhythm generates a dynamic flow that culminates in the white volume of the cross marking the entrance to the chapel, which is both the physical and the spiritual centre of the space. As twilight descends upon the courtyard, the daytime activities cease and the architectural lighting subtly transforms the area into a space for recollection and meditation: a casual invitation to pause and unwind. As darkness falls,
this concept reaches its full expression as six-metre high ‘flames’ define an enclosure of pure light and unrestrained colour, reaffirming the divine presence. This instantly creates an engaging emotional bond with the user, an event that leaves its mark on all who experience the space. Dar Tal-Providenza is a church-run organisation that offers residential services to persons with disability. Located in Siggiewi, Malta, it was founded with the aim of providing a dignified family environment for its residents. It is run almost exclusively by volunteers and is mainly funded through charity events. V

After completing his training he made a radical change and began specialising in plastic surgery. Dr. Fernandes has pioneered using vitamin A in cosmetic products to achieve similar results to using retinoic acid for more
The endings of our DNA are called telomeres - imagine them like the caps of a shoelace that stop the laces from fraying. We are born with about 50,000 base pairs of our own telomeres. When we get older, they drop to about 5,000. The Hayflick limit is the number of times a normal human cell population will divide until the cell division stops. Evidence shows that the telomeres associated with each cell’s DNA will get slightly shorter with each new cell division until they shorten to a critical length. Giving Vitamin A and peptides to the skin activates the DNA to stimulate fibroblasts, which in turn produces more collagen. As we get older, we need to reactivate the DNA and get this functioning and get that elasticity back - this is the key to truly younger looking skin. This is what we mean by rehabilitating the skin on a cellular level.
Is it true that there’s a point of no return for skin to be rejuvenated just through surface creams? Yes, it’s true. Skin creams are just holding. I always say never to do laser treatment, but rather needling. Needling produces results that are far superior to laser. You can’t see that the skin has been treated with needling, whereas laser leaves scarring. What is the worst thing we can do to our skin? Exfoliate. We have what is called a horny layer, which is the outermost layer of the skin, consisting of dead cells. People are told that they need to get rid of this to truly cleanse the skin. The reality is that the oxygen level of the atmosphere is actually toxic for skin cells. This horny layer protects us from this toxicity. We should never do anything to remove this layer - otherwise, our skin is completely at the mercy of the toxicity. As you increase Vitamin A in the skin,
“Smart is Beautiful!” convincing rejuvenation of the skin. He has patented the Environ DF iontophoresis and low frequency sonophoresis machine that enables us to achieve results comparable to having fractionated laser treatments, and also enhances the effects of botulinum toxin injections, as well as reduces fatty deposits. Dr. Fernandes has also pioneered skin needling techniques, which have eventually become internationally recognised as the safest, most effective way of treating lax skin, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks, despite the resistance of his colleagues. The doctor also pioneered the suture suspension “scarless” forehead, face and neck lift and the techniques for “servicing” facelifts to maintain the best result for extended periods. When we speak of rehabilitating the skin on a cellular level, what does this mean exactly? You can give skin a harsh peel, laser treatment, etc. This scars the skin, makes it look smoother, yet not fundamentally younger. When you feed cells with Vitamin A and antioxidant, this changes the DNA structure.

What is the profile of the person that should be using Intensive Avance DFP 312™? We begin losing our collagen at the age of 26-28, whereby physical changes take place, so from this age on Avance will be advantageous. Avance DFP 312™ is formulated with a unique complex of “smart” ingredients. What are the key ones? 75% of creams are made of water, which only leaves 25% that we can play with. We wanted to fill this cream with as many peptides as we could. (Peptides are proteins composed of chains of amino acids, which build blocks of protein.) Most creams from other companies will have one peptide, the most two. Avance has five. You are an advocate for Vitamin A for the skin. How much do we actually need? Everyone is deficient in Vitamin A unless they’re supplementing. The ideal levels are between 40,000-100,000 IUs a day. You can’t find anything remotely close to this in shelf vitamin supplements. Most doctors don’t agree with this amount, but a few of us are getting together for what we call the Vitamin A Revolution. We want to change the levels that were commonly adequate almost 100 years ago.

[ HAIR TRENDS AUTUMN 2015 ]
[ BLONDE EMBODIMENT ]
The change of season brings us into a fresh new mood with a new wardrobe and of course, new hair. The blonde herself, Colourist Ruth Steer at DSalon tells us how to take the blonde plunge.
TREND 1 > ROOTED BLONDE Blonde shades are very much on-trend this fall, but the trend has now evolved into allowing some of your own natural roots to show in order to work well and look more natural, yet still look bright and beautifully blonde. If your hair colour is too dark, lifting your natural colour up to two shades at the roots and blending in blonde shades is the right way to go.
NOW THAT SUMMER IS OVER LEAVING US WITH BRASSY DRIED OUT LOCKS, IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO GET DOWN TO SOME SERIOUS TLC AND REFRESH YOUR HAIRCUT AND COLOUR FOR THE COOLER SEASON AHEAD. IN THE STEPS OF GUCCI AND CELINE AUTUMN/ WINTER 2015, THERE’S NO NEED TO SWITCH YOUR LIGHTS OFF IF YOU ARE A BLONDE SIMPLY BECAUSE THE SUMMER IS OVER. AS LONG AS YOU’RE DOING IT RIGHT, BLONDES WILL STILL BE HAVING FUN THIS SEASON. Words: Colourist Ruth Steer at DSalon, Ibragg
TREND 2 > CREAMY IVORY BLONDE BLOCK Only a few can carry this look off and look stunning. This high maintenance creamy pale blonde block suits girls with cooler complexions and looks even more amazing with light coloured eyes. I wouldn’t recommend going this blonde if your natural colour is very dark, as it could look wrong. Go around it instead by opting for a colour shading technique. Processed hair needs extra dedication, regular trims and reconstructive treatments are a must.
TREND 3 > HONEY BLONDE AND FULL HEAD OF FINE WEAVES This look is a beautiful colour play of caramel brown and honey blonde shades. This fabulous autumn/winter sexy hair colour trend adds dimension and turns heads, as the colour tones shimmer beautifully, enhancing and lifting dark hair. It works best on warmer complexions and longer lengths as it encourages movement, and is also a great enhancer for brown eyed girls.
TREND 4 > STRAWBERRY BLONDE, CINNAMON These beautiful shades of blonde give warmth and glow to the complexion. They suit paler skins with blue/green eyes best. Strawberry cinnamon blonde shades will always be rich, unique winter warming colours. Not for the first time, the latest trend requires one to look deep into the past: welcome to the rise of My Little Pony inspired hair, as seen on models at Gucci AW15. Inspired by the colourful manes of the little plastic toys themselves, this addictive rainbow hair London street style colour trend has become the go-to hair for younger women.

PROMOTION Which countries now hold LIU•JO franchises, and how many are there world-wide?
YOUNG +WILD! VAMP CATCHES UP WITH MARCO MARCHI, CO-OWNER OF LIU•JO GLOBAL, WHO GIVES US INSIGHT ON HOW THE FEMININE AND GLAMOROUS BRAND GOT STARTED AND HOW IT KEEPS IN LINE WITH THE LATEST TRENDS NOW.
Today LIU•JO is present in 50 countries and three continents – Europe, Africa and Asia – through a distribution network including over 450 mono-brand points of sales and 5,000 multi-brand points of sales worldwide. In Italy, figures about LIU•JO tell a consolidated, successful story: 200 stores, including monobrand boutiques and corners, and over 3,000 multi-brand points of sale and independent specialty stores. The expansion of the brand abroad poses new challenges for LIU•JO, that can already count on 250 mono-brand points of sale and corners, and approximately 2,000 independent multi-brand points of sales in Europe, Middle East and Asia. What is the ethos behind LIU•JO’s creative philosophy? Our creative philosophy is devoted to the enhancement of the natural femininity and beauty of every woman, and is expressed through a style that is refined, glamorous and always open to individual interpretations. How would you describe the LIU•JO style in a few words? Feminine, glamorous, and in line with the new trends.
When was LIU•JO set up and what instigated it?
What can we look forward to seeing in LIU•JO stores for the autumn/winter season?
My brother Vannis and I developed our first knitwear collection in the mid 1990s in Carpi, the Italian knitwear district par excellence. The brand developed quickly: we work with energy and enthusiasm, and endeavour to propose modern and attractive creations, characterised by the unmistakable LIU•JO identity – which is a clear and identifiable stylistic trait, supported by a production standard combining the selection of the best materials and a careful and focused selection of details. We believe that guaranteeing a renewed and constantly updated range of unique clothing and accessories is paramount to unveil the constant inclination to research and quality. We remain loyal to our most authentic traditions – an Italian style expressing elegance and reliability, class and seduction. To us, all this is a fundamental value as well as the symbol and goal of our work.
The LIU•JO Fall/Winter 2015 collection is young and wild, definitely stylish and consistent with the season’s key trends. The first part of the collection includes lightweight pieces in rich colours: an interplay of layers and a contemporary style add a very glamorous touch to the collection. Overcoats come in new, softer, comfy or fitted styles. Collars are in contrasting colours, faux pony-skin with giraffe prints or spots. Micro-fur coats create an intriguing street-style where coats are the must-have pieces, such as the ubiquitous faux fur coats – coloured, optical, oversized or micro, warm and comfy, fun, and above all rock – the hero of the trend along with an animal-printed bomber jacket, to be worn in layers or mixed and matched with shirts and pants, to add an easy touch to the collection. The denim collection is plentiful, including skinny and slim solutions, lit up by micro-

Tell us about the new Valletta outlet, and how it varies from the LIU•JO Baystreet St. Julian’s, LIU•JO The Point Sliema, and LIU•JO Uomo Design Hub Sliema stores. The Valletta store is our latest, opening in the heart of Malta, dedicated to an international clientele, with an “accessible luxury” image. Sliema is our first store in Malta, with an established clientele that especially loves our LIU•JO main collection, whereas the Baystreet St. Julian’s store, opened last year, is more focused on a casual and young look. LIU•JO is owned locally by Diane & Karl Izzo, Dizz Group of Companies. Diane was the mastermind behind the set-up of the group in the year 2,000 and its eventual continuous bursts of growth. The group’s core activity is that of importing and retailing of fashion wear by means of its franchise agreements, warehouse stores and retail outlets. Apart from LIU•JO, the group is the franchisee of the prestigious fashion brands Terranova, Calliope, and Make Up Store. The group has more recently also invested in a number of cafeterias under the exclusive franchise Pascucci. Apart from these segments, Dizz Group also owns a shareholding in YouVee Sunglasses and the Dean Gera hair salons.
