t the time of going to print, Malta’s gripped by what passes for winter in a temperate zone – 10C, windy and very humid. It’s the perfect weather, in other words, for colds and flu. If you’re sniffly and shivering, you might have a cold but it might feel like flu. How can you tell the difference? Flick through to our feature on colds and flu to find out. Stay off antibiotics unless you absolutely need them. They can’t cure a cold or flu. Take a rest, drink plenty of water, and eat lots of fresh food instead. On the subject of food, you can’t have missed the current campaign to cut down on waste. If fussing about environmentalism isn’t your thing, then think of your pocket. Reducing food waste saves money, and who can say no to that? If you’re pregnant or planning to be, what and how to eat are a greater concern. Turn to our article on nutrition in pregnancy for more details. Stories about other people are what readers enjoy most and in this issue, as always, you’ll find a few among our other features. We hope you enjoy reading them. We’ll be back after Easter with another issue of A&H.

WHAT YOUR ANSWERS SAY ABOUT YOU Thinking about the past or hoping for the future are tendencies which each individual needs to control. Most people revisit or relive their past to some extent. Many of us tend to compare our current situation with the way things were. That can be positive or negative. During family gatherings, for instance, people often tell stories about the past and, at times, it seems like the past was surely much better than the present
and the future. Psychologists confirm that people experience past emotions more strongly when experiences are repeated in the present. A bad experience in the past can affect people in different ways. People with low self-esteem are afraid to face a similar situation now because they are afraid of facing similar consequences (mostly c’s). Others know how to control their emotions and even though they don’t forget
their bad experience, they try to learn something from it (mostly b’s). People who always strive for something better and who are sure the future holds lots of pleasant surprises, shut out their past completely and blame bad experiences only on bad luck (mostly a’s). If you score mostly a or c, you may be too anxious or overoptimistic. Sharing experiences with family and friends can help you keep a balanced outlook.

Dealing with GRIEF THE NATURAL WAY AROMATHERAPIST MARIKA FLERI SPEAKS TO DANIELA ALLEN ABOUT HOW SHE DISCOVERED THE WORLD OF ESSENTIAL OILS WHILE GRIEVING FOR HER FATHER WHO DIED SUDDENLY WHEN SHE WAS 15 YEARS OLD.
n
o one can really understand the pain that comes with death more than those who actually experience the loss of someone dear to them. No matter which way we look at it death brings sadness. There is no consolation. However, Marika believes that holistic therapies such as aromatherapy can assist both the dying as well as those they leave behind. She speaks about her own personal growth as she continues to channel the pain she felt – and often still feels – towards helping others who have been or who will go through what she went through. “When I lost my father 20 years ago, my whole world fell apart. My dreams and aspirations crumbled in a span of five minutes,” she says. “My family structure disappeared. All that I thought I stood for did not make sense anymore.” Marika was attending college at the time, pursuing a course that would eventually enable her to study medicine. She quit studying. All she wanted to do was stop the world moving. “Times were too tough,” she says. “My immunity was also suffering as I was prescribed endless boxes of antibiotics which consequently destroyed my gut flora and my skin. I felt like a 15-year old locked in the body of an 80-year old.” However, after so much pain and grief, Marika started to see a light at the end of what she describes as a dark tunnel. The turning point was almost banal. One morning, while walking past a bookshop, she spotted a book about aromatherapy, a discovery which was to help her turn her life around. At a time when holistic therapies were almost

unheard of in Malta, Marika took to this book and has never looked back since: “I knew right then that that is what I wanted to do. I was completely absorbed by what I was reading and I started to manage all my symptoms using essential oils, even though it was very hard to find them at the time. That is when I started feeling in control again.” Soon after that experience Marika bought all the books she could find on aromatherapy and eventually took a three-year course to qualify as an aromatherapist. Now well known for her work in this field, she is currently drawn towards helping those who, like herself, have suffered a loss in their life and helping people suffering from terminal illness. Marika feels this is her calling. “I step in when life is gradually being taken away,” she says. “It’s a very difficult and personal moment but, when I receive a request from someone who would like some aromatherapy treatment, I go wholeheartedly, and whenever necessary”. Marika belongs to a support group doing voluntary work at Sir Paul Boffa Hospital. Along with her colleagues, she offers aromatherapy support to patients who are going through or who have gone through cancer treatment. Every month the group meets new patients and offers treatments to them for a day. “It is the highlight of my practice at the moment,” Marika says.
Treatments for cancer patients can vary between preparing an aromatherapy inhaler oils that help nourish the skin.
Treatments for cancer patients can vary between preparing an aromatherapy inhaler, for example, which helps them relax and sleep better at night, to oils that help nourish the skin which may have dried out because of chemotherapy. Referring to loss and death, Marika describes every moment as carrying a certain amount of loss within it – even the loss of the moment itself – but also potential: “Every breath will not be repeated, it will be replaced by new breaths, therefore a

Aromatherapy recipes Marika Fleri recommends the following aromatherapy blends when grieving. Add the relevant mix to your bath water. Disperse the oils well before entering the bath. You can also add the mixed oils to an aromatherapy diffuser.
RECOMMENDED READING The owner or Aroma Treasures, a website where she shares her knowledge on the subject, Marika advises anyone who is interested in aromatherapy to read the book that started her off on this journey: ‘The Fragrant Pharmacy’ by Valerie Ann Wormwood (available at www.agendamalta.com)
ABOUT AROMATHERAPY Referred to also as essential oil therapy, aromatherapy can be defined as the science of using naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. This seeks to unify physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s innate healing process.
Dealing with the initial shock and ‘numb’ feeling In a teaspoon of vegetable oil add: 3 drops sandalwood 2 drops Melissa 2 drops Frankincense
Dealing with guilt and anger An essential oil blend that can help during this stage is: 3 drops lavender 2 drops chamomile roman 2 drops jasmine
Dealing with deep sadness or depression: new opportunity and a new beginning.” She describes death as an opportunity, a new start without the shackles of our limited physical body. “Our body might be frail and broken but our spirit is infinite. Death releases the soul and sets it free. I envisage this as an infinite dance together with other souls with whom we have experienced pain and joy throughout our lives. “Grief, on the other hand, affects people differently and is a personal journey. It takes on many forms and facets and all these have to be dealt with. If they are ignored, they manifest themselves in other symptoms and emotions.”
Being a holistic therapist, she looks at the person in his or her entirety. Any issues which have not been dealt with tend to surface during an initial consultation and are factored in when planning aromatherapy treatment. Through her work, Marika wants to pass on the message that aromatherapy is not simply a beauty enhancing treatment: “It is a treatment with its own merit and it requires professional education. Essential oils can be very dangerous if treatment is administered without the advice of a professional. Each treatment should be tailor-made for the individual.”
An essential oil blend that can help during this stage is: 3 drops Mandarin essential oil 2 drops Lavender essential oil 2 drops clary sage essential oil
Marika says that every essential oil has unique chemical constituents which, in turn, have specific therapeutic properties: “It is the aromatherapist’s job to identify which essential oils would best suit her client/patient and which method of application would be most effective after a thorough consultation.”

EATING FOR TWO OR MORE OPTIMISING NUTRITION IS ESSENTIAL FOR A HEALTHY PREGNANCY. BUT WHAT AND HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED? MARIKA AZZOPARDI REPORTS.
b
ecoming pregnant is a great accomplishment, an important joyful step in a woman's life. It is also filled with anticipation, and a sense of attachment with the new child in the making. One key topic which seriously concerns soon-to-be-mums is nutrition and the kind of food they eat, should be eating, or should not be eating. Elizabeth Muscat has been a midwife for many years and has also trained as a nutritionist to complement her professional skills. "Giving birth is a feat in itself but keeping a baby healthy within the womb for 40 weeks is also a huge responsibility, since a healthy pregnancy will provide the baby with a privileged start to life outside the womb,” she says. “We are fortunate to be living in a day and age when good food is affordable for most people, and nutritional information and advice is given out to mothers from varied sources, an important source being Parentcraft lessons for pregnant parents, which are held at Mater Dei Hospital." The first most important piece of advice given to women planning a pregnancy is to maintain an ideal weight for their height, age and body type. "Very often we come across women who find it hard to become pregnant due to their obesity,” Ms Muscat says.
Pregnant women are more susceptible to food poisoning.

CUTTING FOOD WASTE IS GOOD FOR YOUR POCKET AND THE ENVIRONMENT. ANNA MARIA GATT ON HOW TO PUT PRINCIPLES INTO PRACTICE.
e
nvironmental campaigns tell us how to save electricity, what we should do to try to reduce pollution, and how to avoid wasting water. The most recent campaign invites us to reduce food waste, helping ourselves, our pockets and our planet. Millions around the world go without regular food, which makes throwing food away more of a waste. In addition, there is the environmental aspect too, which we often ignore. When we throw away food we are throwing away the resources and hours spent to produce that particular food: harvesting, soil, acres of land and large amounts of freshwater. We might not be policy makers, but we can still help leave a better planet for future generations. Put the following ideas into practice and encourage your family and friends to do the same.
scraps can be 1Food used for compost
Food scraps that are usually thrown away can easily be turned into compost which can be used in gardens and also for household plants. Compost provides nourishment for your soil, helping your plants grow healthily, helping to reduce the environmental costs of landfills.
thoughtfully 2Order when eating out

3Learn how to say ‘no, thank you’
When you order a main course and waiters offer you additional sauces, salads, vegetables or potatoes, be sure what you would like to eat. Don’t say ‘yes’ to everything if you already know that you won’t even bother to taste the accompanying salad. No one will be offended if you refuse politely, and food won’t be wasted.
your meals and 4Plan buy accordingly
Certain foods are spoiled because they are not stored properly. Follow the storage instructions which all products have printed on their packages.
When ordering a starter, share with others so that you avoid leaving your main course half eaten. Restaurants are often willing to prepare ‘doggy’ bags with food which you do not eat. When returning home, store it properly in the fridge and use it within the next few hours or else you’ll end up throwing it in your bin just the same. 12
ways to save MONEY & SAVE OUR PLANET
Planning your weekly meals will save you lots of money and lots of time, and will cut down on waste. Work out what you need and prepare your shopping list so that you don’t buy what’s unnecessary. Supermarket displays are designed to tempt you, so be firm and stick to your list. Try not to get carried away by the shiny packets of chocolates, biscuits and gums near the cash tills.
5Know what you have
Before making another trip to the supermarket, check your fridge and freezer. Look at expiry dates and use perishable items first. At times, you will be surprised how creative you can be in the kitchen with different items which you never thought had something in common. Don’t buy more vegetables and fruit than you can store and eat in a few days. If you are the only one in the house who eats apples, buy only 4 or 5. Work out your purchases according to the taste of your family members.
your food 6Store properly
Certain foods are spoiled because they are not stored properly. Follow the storage instructions which all products have printed on their packages. If you have leftovers which can be frozen, freeze them. This needs a bit of organisation and a variety of storage containers. Save time: you can also premeasure the frozen items so that they handier when you are in a hurry.

Spices contain anti-oxidants, trace minerals and other health-giving compounds that can help ease chronic conditions. If you are on medication, consult your doctor about which spices are safe for you to use as some types of spice may interfere with medication. amounts. Use fresh spices whenever possible. Spice flavours and health-giving properties are best when the spices are at their peak as their active compounds degrade over time. Store spices properly using airtight containers. Keeping them away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight will help preserve their quality.
Cinnamon Cinnamon may help to control blood sugar by lowering post-meal blood-sugar spikes. The effects are limited so this is not a substitute for a properly controlled diet and diabetic medication. Cinnamon is strongly anti-oxidant so a daily dose can help top up your anti-oxidant intake. You need around 1.5 teaspoons of cinnamon daily for it to be effective. The spice is strong tasting, so you might want to spread your intake throughout the day. How to use cinnamon • Sprinkle ground cinnamon over hot drinks, preferably sugar-free and decaffeinated, with fat-free milk. Cinnamon even tastes good in tea. • Mix half a teaspoon of cinnamon into decaffeinated ground coffee before brewing. • Stir a teaspoonful of cinnamon into a pot of fat-
free yogurt and pour it over a mix of wholegrain cereal or a handful of grapes and almonds.
Ginger Ginger is antiinflammatory so it can help soothe arthritis pain and other inflammatory conditions. It is traditionally used to relieve colds and upset stomachs and can help reduce the nausea of morning sickness or post-surgical and post-chemotherapy nausea. You’ll find fresh ginger root in the vegetable section of larger supermarkets. How to use ginger • Grate fresh ginger and sprinkle it in soups, or toss it with sliced vegetables in a stir fry. • Peel and slice fresh ginger root and brew a few pieces with a slice of lemon for a refreshing, caffeine-free hot drink.
Turmeric Turmeric is related to ginger. It is more commonly found here in dried and ground form but if you can find the fresh, unground version, buy that instead. In India, turmeric is crushed and mashed into a paste which is then applied to skin wounds to help healing. It is also brewed with hot water into a tisane and drunk to relieve colds and other respiratory problems. Folk medicine aside, turmeric is anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory and

can help relieve arthritis pain and other inflammatory conditions. A few studies have shown that curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, can help suppress enzymes that activate cancer growth and can inhibit tumour cell growth. However, the evidence is not conclusive. How to use turmeric • Add ground turmeric to the water when cooking rice. • Mix ground turmeric into fat-free yogurt to use as a sandwich spread. • Sprinkle ground turmeric onto boiled egg salad. • Peel and chop a small piece of fresh turmeric root and brew it into tea.
Chilli Pepper Chillis are particularly good for health. They are a good source of vitamin-C, which is essential for collagen synthesis. It helps maintain the health of the eyes, blood vessels, skin and vital organs and helps to boost immunity to infection. The anti-oxidant properties of chilli help mop up free radicals generated by disease and stress and which increase inflammation. Chillis contain trace minerals including potassium, which helps to control heart rate and blood pressure, manganese, which your body uses to produce a particular antioxidant enzyme, and iron, which is essential for blood health.
They are also a good source of B-complex vitamins, vitamin A and flavonoids. How to use chilli pepper • Deseed and finely shred a chilli pepper and sprinkle it over your food instead of black pepper. • Finely slice a chilli and add it to soup. • Make up a chilli paste (harissa) and use it as a dressing on meat and fish dishes. Chilli paste is concentrated and very hot, so use it sparingly.
from stress, cancers, and infections and help promote immunity. Saffron also contains trace minerals including potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, selenium, zinc, magnesium and copper, which help regulate the heart rate and blood pressure, ensure healthy red blood cell production, which is important for overall health, and help in the production of essential enzymes. Saffron also contains vital vitamins including A, C and some Bcomplex vitamins that are crucial to good health. Buy whole, dried saffron if you can, preferably in sealed containers. Fresh saffron is hard to come by but it should be bright crimson-red and leave a yellow stain on your fingers. Genuine saffron strands are 2-4cm in length. Store it in a closed container, preferably in the fridge. Exposure to light reduces its potency and flavour. Note: avoid high doses of saffron during pregnancy. How to use saffron • Add a pinch of saffron to rice dishes to add colour and flavour. • Ground saffron threads to a paste and rub into white meats before cooking. • Add a pinch of saffron to a mug of hot water and allow it to steep before adding it to the cooking pot.
Spice flavours and health-giving properties are best when the spices are at their peak as their active compounds Saffron Saffron is derived from degrade over Crocus Sativus flowers. nce upon a time a charming prince laid eyes on a beautiful princess. They fell in love, he proposed, they got married, and lived happily ever after. Well all right, it didn’t happen quite like that, but as it’s February, and much of this month revolves around Valentine’s Day, I decided that a little bit of fairytale romance wouldn’t go amiss. I am sitting across from Caroline and Kurt Paris, and am reminded of my long gone days in kindergarten. These two are sitting close together. They giggle and nudge each other playfully, while I suppress the urge to bring out a colouring book and some crayons. My kitten looks on, surprised that humans can be more playful than a little feline. Pen poised we get down to business. How did they meet? “It was an arranged marriage,” says Kurt, looking at his young wife, who is trying, unsuccessfully, to glare at him. I’m trying to keep a
straight face. Is he ever serious? They both tell me the story, in unison. Caroline disagreeing at Kurt’s exaggerations, and putting facts straight and Kurt interjecting with man stuff, which he finds important, like his playing computer games during breaktime. It was anything but an arranged marriage but, since they are both Maltese, family connections were involved. You guessed it. Their fathers knew each other – small world, smaller island. Caroline needed a summer job and joined Kurt’s father’s team. Was it really love at first sight? It seems not. Kurt admits he liked the look of Caroline but she says she’s not the type of girl who likes cuddly guys. More laughter ensures. It seems like Kurt got the last laugh. Caroline loves the gym, and anything to do with fitness. She’s quite into the body beautiful on both the male and female form. She wakes up very early, three times a week, to be at the gym before the cock crows. She tells me that she didn’t really look at Kurt initially, but the attraction was there.

Kurt, being a relaxed individual, certainly took his time. Caroline found this extremely perplexing, especially since he would drive her home, or take her out, never alone but always with a group of friends. At one point, later down the line, she set her sights on another, thinking “What on earth is taking Kurt so long to make a move” That evening, when dropping her off home, he kissed her on the cheek, and kissed her properly the very next day . They have been married for four years. I’m told that he was a bit iffy about marriage. They had, after all, spent a year living together in Scotland, while doing their masters degrees. Why rock the boat? Kurt said ‘live together’. Caroline said ‘marriage’. Kurt had won a prestigious award which came with a decent amount of cash by way of a prize, and instead of buying (yet another) camera, he bought his beloved a ring. She’s a fashion stylist with a blog and he’s a photographer. They both have full time jobs in the IT industry, although they look nothing like geeks. Their time is taken up by so much to do. How does that work? This year, they have actually made a resolution to spend more quality time together. A designer 18

friend of theirs, and also part of a creative couple, suggested they go to each other’s functions. This is working out well, and it’s a suggestion they feel should be shared. What else do they share besides a home, friends, family and creativity? They catch each other’s eyes and there’s loud laughter from both of them. Kurt tells me about Caroline’s love affair with anything to do with the gym. She interjects, reminding him that most of her best ideas some to her while she’s on the treadmill, or spinning – “like a gerbil”, Kurt tells me, rolling his eyes in pretend shock horror. Caroline pats him playfully on his tummy, much like one would rub a Buddha for luck. He ruffles her hair. The idea of colouring books flashes past, but I’m wondering if I should have a Naughty Chair instead. Cue more giggles. Are they ever serious? Indeed they are. Their creative side brings out a work ethic which is serious. Caroline loves helping clients work on their wardrobe, or sort it out for that matter. She offers a personal shopping service, and writes a blog. Kurt’s genre is people, who his photography captures beautifully. He will photograph events, or anything people oriented.

They work on some projects together, with Caroline doing the styling and Kurt snapping away. They lament that any form of the arts in Malta is expected to be free. While they feel that they, like all others, should be paid for their work, they also work for free, should the situation so require, as they believe that they, too, should give something back. The matter of Valentine’s Day comes up. Caroline tells me how their first Valentine’s Day was anything but romantic or special. Guess Who had left the dinner booking to the last minute. I can just about hear a collective gasp from my readers. I too, was taken aback. Being a happy-go-lucky chap, Kurt felt, deep down in his bones, that everything would be ok. All would be all right on the night, once Kurt had booked a table for two in a romantic restaurant known for its ambience – except that it wasn’t. The table for two was surrounded by many, many tables for two, all a waiter’s girth away. Fortunately they still laugh about it. Why am I not surprised?

these two know each other, and it works. Laughter is not just the best medicine, it’s a great multivitamin. And that, dear readers, is why the charming prince and his beautiful princess will live happily ever after.

PERSONAL TRAINERS ON PRACTISING WHAT THEY PREACH. INTERVIEWS BY DANIELA ALLEN
w
e know the facts: a healthy lifestyle helps prevent illness while keeping us fit, focused and happier. Personal trainers are there to help us achieve our fitness goals. Some find it extremely motivating to join a gym and seek a personal trainer’s advice while others do their own thing. However, throughout their fitness journey many have turned to the professionals for guidance and above all expertise. The results speak for themselves.
DARYL AND PAMELA PSAILA are both former rugby players. They emphasise the importance of a varied balanced diet, “...with a little bit of everything – meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and a low sugar intake.” They said the way they eat affects their exercise training as well as their health. “Healthy eating should form part of one’s lifestyle and
Healthy eating should form part of one’s lifestyle. not just be a short term goal, such as for weight loss.” The couple were passionate about fitness for many, many years before they eventually started their own successful venture together with friends when they opened THE PIT in 2012. They keep up with what is going on in the health and fitness world and attend many courses and workshops abroad. Both Crossfit trainers – which includes weightlifting, movement and mobility and Crossfit kids – they strongly believe that exercising regularly, eating healthily and practising sports is key to living well, together with a good amount of sleep which they say is very important, recommending 7-8 hours per night. They personally try to exercise twice daily, five days a week with strength training in the morning and a short intense workout in the evening. This generally consists of a combination of major powerlifting and weightlifting, gymnastics movements and metabolic conditioning (row, run). “At the end of

the session and on our rest days we focus on mobility and stretching.” Daryl and Pamela, a former gymnast and athlete, first joined a gym half a life time ago at the age of 16 and they haven’t stopped since. Meanwhile they took up rugby at a professional level and both have represented Malta in international competitions. Eight years ago they started their fitness studies and have been coaching for the past three years. “Since the opening of THE PIT, that is where we dedicate most of our time. Coaching athletes of all different levels and ages is our passion. It is a great satisfaction helping people to achieve their goals and seeing them getting fitter and moving better every day.”
JOHANNA REFALO. From a very young age health and fitness has been a way of life for Johanna Refalo, a former dancer who strongly believes that finding a balance between exercise and healthy eating is the key to optimum health and fitness. “It is so important to fuel your body with nutritious food, water, sleep, exercise, as well as sunshine and fresh air.” Professionally, she is certified to teach Les Mills programmes, an international provider of choreographed exercise and group fitness classes. 24

She is also a Les Mills Trainer at GX-1 in Malta and works as a GX-1 ONE2ONE personal trainer. Johanna says she strives to always stay ahead of the game and regularly travels abroad to attend world-class seminars and conventions. She says ‘intuitive’ eating and understanding biomechanics are vital to achieving her own goals. She explains about biomechanics and says it is very important not only for her to understand how and why the body is designed to move but also to make her clients aware of which muscles they are using and why. This produces great technique and maximum results. By intuitive eating Johanna explains it is an approach that teaches one to create a healthy relationship with food, mind and body: “You learn to respond to your inner body cues. Eating when you’re hungry, never feeling full or starved...listening to your body.” Besides training clients and teaching sessions, and being a busy mother of two Johanna says she also does power walking, climbing stairs and jogging as part of her own exercise routine. “I make sure I keep moving when and where I can. After all, our bodies are designed to move.” Dedicated to what she does Johanna says she loves sharing her passion in the sector and motivating people towards a living a healthier and fitter lifestyle.
has to be made and maintained throughout our lives, keeping in mind that achievements do not just happen overnight,” she says, adding that a balanced diet and exercise are the basis of a healthy lifestyle. She attends a number of courses to strengthen her skills and expertise, deepen her knowledge and keep up with the world of health and fitness. She says she also enjoys reading a lot and does research at sports medicine colleges. Besides that she also uses social media, the internet and books on health and fitness. “My main sport has always been football,” she says. Throughout her football career, Ingrid played for several teams including a number of times for the Malta team. Maintaining her passion for football, Ingrid coached 9-year olds and eventually coached Melita and Birkirkara girls’ football nurseries. Ingrid’s career in health and fitness started 13 years ago when she first started working as a gym instructor. It was then that she decided to specialise in personal training, training to music and T.R.X. Principles of exercise and fitness. Ingrid currently works at LivingWell Malta and says she exercises 4-5 times a week. “My training consists mainly of cross training. In practice, that means I do weights one day, spinning the other day, crossfit the next day and so on.”
Being healthy is a way of life. It is a choice that has to be made and maintained throughout our lives
INGRID VASSALLO a former professional footballer and football coach and now a personal trainer, says health is the most important factor for self confidence, increased energy, living longer, preventing illness, decreasing stress, and enjoying a general sense of wellbeing. “Being healthy is a way of life. It is a choice that
She says the key to a healthy lifestyle is time management and a good healthy diet: “In our hectic world, we should all find time to exercise, even if it’s just going out for a 30-minute walk each day. Every little bit can make a big difference. And eating a good healthy diet should be a must in our life, and part of our lifestyle.”

COMFORT A&H’S GUIDE TO AVOIDING WINTER SNIFFLES AND FEVER
w
inter sometimes seem to be an endless round of colds and flu, especially if there are young children in the household. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. The best way to avoid being infected is to stay away from people who are unwell. If you or your children are unwell, stay away from others too, especially the very young or infirm, who are more prone to infection and vulnerable to complications when ill. Simple precautions can be highly effective. One way to avoid catching or spreading infection is to wash your hands often, especially after blowing your nose or “catching” a cough or a sneeze. Covering your nose or mouth you sneeze or cough helps to prevent germs spreading through the air.
Microbes are easily passed on from your hand to the next object you touch, where they can survive for hours waiting to infect the next person they meet. Sneezing or coughing into the crook of your elbow can help keep your hands germ-free. Care-givers – including mothers of new borns, baby carers, and anyone who looks after the elderly – need to protect themselves and those they look after. Tiny babies are especially vulnerable to infection and a worry when ill. Washing your hands before preparing feeds is essential but for the sake of baby’s health (and a good night’s sleep all round), mothers and other baby carers affected by a cold or flu could take extra precautions. Using a disposable mask when feeding or changing the baby can help prevent infection. Masks are readily available at most pharmacies and are usually found in the ‘baby goods’ section.

SCHOOL ALERT Think twice before sending your children to school with a streaming cold or a feverish look in their eyes. It is uncomfortable for everyone, especially your own child. Sniffling through a school day is a miserable experience, with or without a fever. Infection spreads easily in crowded places, particularly among young children who are in close contact for long periods of time. Very young children usually need help simply to blow their nose and are unlikely to have learned the simple habits that helps prevent infection.

INFLUENZA VACCINATION
HOW TO RELIEVE THE SYMPTOMS
The seasonal flu vaccine reduces the possibility of flu infection. No vaccine is available against colds.
There are no cures for the common cold or for flu, but rest and symptom relief will help the immune system fight the infection.
Small babies The flu vaccine is not safe for babies less than six months old. Babies in this age group are best protected by good hygiene and by avoiding contact with infected people. Immunising care givers and other members of the baby’s household can help protect the baby from influenza.
Young children Flu vaccination is recommended for children aged between six months and five years to reduce the possibility of illness and its attendant complications. The first time a child receives the vaccine, s/he may need more than one dose. Consult your doctor for advice on the matter.
Other high risk groups Other “high risk” groups include people aged 65 years or over, and people who suffer from chronic health problems such as asthma or other respiratory problems, heart disease or anyone with a weakened immune system, e.g. cancer patients. As with young babies, care-giver/s and members of the same household of high-risk persons should also have the flu vaccine annually, to minimise the risk of contracting the virus and then passing it on.
28
February 2015
• Avoid dehydration. Drink plenty of clear fluids, especially if there is a fever. Water, fruit juice and chicken broth are helpful. The steam from hot soup also helps clear a stuffy nose. • Rest is essential, especially if for a child who is running a fever. • Keep away from smoky areas and keep smoke out of the house. • Don’t go to enclosed, crowded places. A few days off school won’t do a sick child any harm. • Suck on a lozenge to relieve a sore throat. Older children could gargle frequently using salt water. • Help clear a young baby’s blocked nose by using saline drops and a nasal aspirator. Both are available from the baby section at most pharmacies. • Use an over-the-counter remedy for flu and cold symptoms if you must, but ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice first. Some preparations for symptom relief contain paracetamol and should not be taken with paractamol-based pain relievers. • Use a menthol inhaler or balm. If a child is too young to use one, or simply does not like the “cold” feeling of a menthol balm on his/her chest, dab some on the corners of the pillow. Whichever way the child faces at night, s/he will inhale the balm.
IS IT A COLD OR IS IT THE FLU? A cold usually shows up in the form of sneezing, stuffiness or a runny nose, sometimes also accompanied by a slight fever in adults or older children, and a higher fever in babies or toddlers. Cold symptoms also include a sore (though not red) throat, a headache, a cough or watery eyes. Within a couple of days, any nasal secretion from a cold usually becomes thicker and changes in colour. Antibiotics cannot treat a cold or flu virus as they work only on bacteria. Flu symptoms are similar, but accompanied by a general feeling of being unwell, listlessness, and physical aches and pains. The onset is sudden, and usually accompanied by fever (especially in babies and toddlers), overall aches and low energy levels. After 2-4 days, the worst symptoms normally diminish, but respiratory problems – sniffiness, a blocked nose, sneezing and coughing – persist.
WHEN TO CALL A DOCTOR There is no need to call or visit your doctor unless you are concerned about symptoms. Trust your instinct and don’t worry about being called fussy. Some of the symptoms requiring immediate medical attention are: • • • • • • • • •
a prolonged or high fever a cold lasting over 10 days ear ache seizures unusual lethargy wheezing or an inability to breathe properly bluish skin colour insufficient intake of fluids pain or pressure in the chest.

SOCIAL MEDIA ARE NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THE REAL WORLD, ESPECIAL
f you’re over 30, you’ll remember how difficult it was to find out about or meet your teenage crush. You would wait for hours, maybe after school, to see him or her pass by. Or you would hang around the same bar, hoping that he or she would drop by for a drink. Nowadays, all you need to do is log onto social media and type in a name. Immediately, that person’s entire life will be splashed across your screen. There is a positive side to this. You might realise that you were fooled by the person’s appearance and that he or she is not really your type, after all. However, relying on social media to meet and to get to know someone, and even to start a relationship, isn’t necessarily a good thing. Over-reliance on social media can turn into addiction and a substitute for life experience in the offline world. than they originally planned to, and who persist in their habit despite significant negative
consequences on their lives, especially when they risk their relationships, their jobs and their health. Others might even become obsessed or preoccupied with these activities instead of focusing on other aspects of their life. If you spend around 12 hours a week chatting online with virtual strangers or hooking up with people for sexual reasons, consider yourself an addict. A&H met three persons who spend long hours on the internet, two of them because of their jobs. We offer this in addition to rehabilitation services after trauma, surgery or illness.
HUR Air Resistance Equipment now in Malta Exercise is made safer with HUR’s Natural TransmissionTM system. HUR allows older people to exercise more safely. Using air as resistance overcomes the additional effort required to lift a static weight at the beginning of an exercise and to slow it down it at the end. Maintaining a more consistent resistance profile reduces stress on vulnerable joints and connective tissues and makes the movement feel ‘smoother’ and easier to execute. Suitable for endurance and strength training The resistance curve of HUR machines maintains its profile regardless of the speed of movement providing the benefits of both types of training. A near zero starting resistance feature facilitates ongoing and assisted mobilisation. You can also make use of LiveLife’s indoor pool and one to one personalised training programmes.

ANNA MARIA GATT MEETS A PE TEACHER AND A SALESMAN WITH A TASTE FOR ADVENTURE.
w
hat makes Juleanne and Martin special is the way they love spending time together doing the unconventional. Describing them as adventurous is too subtle. Beating the elements and breaking limits sounds more appropriate. "Martin and I have been together for four years and we met at a climbing competition that took place in Malta in February 2011. Sport brought us together and helped us to build this relationship into a stronger and adventurous experience,” says Juleanne. Ever since meeting, they sought out sporting activities that provide the adrenaline rush they both enjoy so much: cycling, running, skiing, scuba diving, kayaking, and even skydiving. "We are both athletic so we always seek new adventures and new opportunities together. We support each other in everything we do and encourage each other," explains Juleanne. True, but are these activities for everyone? "Extreme activities often involve speed, height, a high level of physical exertion, and highly specialised gear or spectacular stunts. You need to be mentally and physically prepared for them," Juleanne says. That’s certainly true of skydiving, a sport that’s always fascinated me. Viewing the world from above must be extraordinary. Martin and Juleanne are frequent skydivers and are now licensed instructors. It all began during a road trip they took together in Australia. "We were always amazed by skydivers and the idea of flying. While in Australia we went over a drop zone called Ramblers Skydiving in Toogoolawah, Brisbane and opted to take an AFF License Course,” Juleanne says. “We spent a whole week taking the course and it was the best experience ever since we discovered a new sport, met great and awesome people and were able to fly." I have often seen spectacular photos of both of them during one of their skydives and I always joke with Juleanne that I believe they will be taking their wedding vows up there, suspended in air. Juleanne considers skydiving an experience of a lifetime and describes becoming a skydiver instructor as her best achievement in life so far.
"As you take up the course, at first you are scared and excited to jump from an open airplane on your own,” she says. “Eventually, with the help of instructors and a few jumps, you gain confidence and overcome fear. As the number of jumps increases, you forget about fear and look forward to the next jump." Here in Malta they don't have the opportunity to practice their favourite activity so they travel regularly during weekends just to go skydiving. Both being Maltese, Juleanne and Martin
appreciate the fact that, even though Malta is a small island and the terrain limits exposure to certain extreme activities, there are still opportunities for those who would like to try something adventurous. "Malta is a bit limited but there are certain sports and activities like rock climbing, scuba diving, water sports, motor sports, paragliding, mountain biking and other things,” they say. “There are various clubs which offer courses and events for all to experience."

With tourism being a major economic sector and sport tourism being promoted regularly, Juleanne comments that "we should offer more extreme sports such as skydiving, tandem hang gliding/paragliding and bungee jumping. They will attract both locals and tourists, bringing in more profit and creating more opportunities.” Our conversation shifts towards their road trip down under, which started from Melbourne where they built their own camper van and set off on the experience of a life time. They were determined to learn a lot while travelling and at the same time work with locals to earn a living. "We travelled from Melbourne to the Great Ocean Road up to Adelaide, looped back to the Grampians and started our way along the east coast,” Juleanne says. “We spent a few weeks working in Sydney and took off again up the Gold Coast in Queensland." Here, they camped among waves, kangaroos, wombats, breathtaking scenery and also lizards, snakes and spiders. Both Juleanne and Martin were fascinated by the versatility of this amazing continent. Their last stop in Australia was the Great Barrier Reef where they spent a whole week scuba diving, admiring the wonderful corals which one can only see there. "We also flew over to New Zealand where we treated ourselves to outdoor adventure including white water rafting, kayaking and seal watching in Abel Tasman National Park, trekking over glaciers on Fox Glacier and last but not least skydiving in four different drop zones around the South Island." In addition to taking to the skies and exploring the oceans, another must for the adventurous pair are the majestic mountains. "Skiing is an amazing sport and is a 36

great challenge. There are different graded slopes starting from the easiest to more challenging, steeper slopes. It’s a sport for all the family and all ages and during the winter months we travel specifically to ski," says Juleanne. Physical activity helps us keep healthy but many of us find repetitive exercise boring and following an exercise schedule isn’t always possible. Engaging in extreme activities can also contribute to a healthy lifestyle. "You enjoy the nature around you and experience the elements of wind, sun and rain. You concentrate on what you love doing which gives you peace of mind and relief from the usual routine," Juleanne says, adding that, as a PE teacher, she tries to instil this sense of adventure in her
students too. "Schools should promote outdoor education that gives children the opportunity for adventure, by organising orienteering treks, zip lining, abseiling, trekking and survival skills," she says. She’s got a point, and the benefits are social as well as physical. While preparing this feature and choosing the photos, I could see how being so close to nature, as Juleanne and Martin are during their adventures, can help one appreciate the beauty of nature and remind us to preserve it for coming generations to enjoy. All said, I can only wish this special couple a fun future together full of activities and adventures that strengthen their mutual relationship and teach us less courageous folk to admire the beauty of nature and the amazing way the human body works.

WE KNOW THE POWER OF THE VEHICLES WE DRIVE, BUT DO WE DO KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT ROAD SAFETY? JO CARUANA FINDS OUT HOW TO PROTECT OURSELVES, OUR PASSENGERS AND OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD
t
hrough near-misses to life-threatening accidents, most of us realise how vulnerable we are on the road. For Suzanne, that experience occurred nearly 30 years ago, when she was driving home one evening. “To this day I hate dredging up the memories of that crash,” she says, adding that she puts her survival down to her religious devotion and the holy picture she was carrying with her. “It was literally a miracle that I made it out alive.” The accident occurred when Suzanne was driving home through Rabat after a party. A car shot out of a side street and smashed into her brand new car. “My car was a complete write-off but I was lucky enough to walk away with a cut lip and a bruise on my upper chest in the shape of the steering wheel.
It could have been so much worse,” she says. “It turned out that the driver was a drunk off-duty policeman, but the fact that he was so wellconnected meant he was never charged. I ended up with the bill for it all, as well as horrific long-term memories of that night.” Like anyone who has experienced a crash of that sort, Suzanne remains fully aware of the importance of safe driving, which is something that can be quickly forgotten when driving becomes routine. “I don’t think drivers are cautious enough,” she says adamantly. “How often do we stop to think about the power of the vehicle we are manoeuvring? It could kill you or others in a heartbeat if used recklessly or carelessly. Couple that with the abysmal lighting on the roads, the

stream of potholes and the rise in road rage, and you are asking for trouble. “Ever since that accident I have been aware of the way other people drive and handle their cars. It doesn’t take much to be a more careful driver, and I wish more people would become aware of the rules they should follow to do so. It could save a life, and it will certainly avert an accident,” she stresses. With that in mind, there is actually plenty that drivers can do to make their driving safer for everyone concerned – and this is equally true for those who are new on the road, as well as for those who have been behind the wheel for decades.
Be Attentive. This may sound obvious, but it’s incredible how quickly your mind can wander when you’re driving. Do you find yourself constructing your shopping list, or going through your schedule for the weekend? Or are you sneaking a peek at your text messages while stopping at the traffic lights (more on that later)? It has been estimated that distraction plays a role in 32% of all road crash deaths and serious injuries. It is thus vital to remain fully aware of what is going on around you, no matter how experienced you are. Your split-second reactions could mean the difference between being in a crash or avoiding one.
A&H SAFETY hour, and more in wet weather or if your tyres are a little flat? That’s a long way, especially if the car in front of you stops suddenly. The rule of thumb is to have three seconds between you and the car ahead of you. Use the static objects you drive past to work out your distance per second.
Know Your Conditions. A slight drizzle can be enough to make traffic come to a standstill in Malta (which increases road rage), and it can also be enough to make the roads slippery too. Rain, wind, glare, gravel and night driving all pose their own unexpected threats, so add caution during these conditions. Don’t Drive Under the Influence. Whether it’s a few drinks, some prescription drugs, tiredness or using your mobile phone, every influence can alter the way you react on the road, and can cause an accident. The EU is clamping down on drinkdriving, and you shouldn’t drive if you’ve had more than a couple of alcohol units in the past few hours. If you do plan to drink, arrange for one of your group to be the designated driver, or book a cab. It really isn’t worth the risk.
Going Mobile. When it comes to using your mobile phone on the road, there’s just one rule: don’t. Using your mobile phone actually makes you four times more likely to crash, whether by impairing your ability to stay in your lane, extending your reaction time, reducing your awareness or increasing your mental workload. The safest option is to turn off your mobile phone while driving.
Driving and dying on Malta’s roads According to EUROSTAT 2012, Malta has a relatively low road accident fatality rate per capita – and this is likely to be as a direct result of road improvements, lower speed limits, improved laws relating to drinkdriving, the mandatory use of crash helmets and seatbelts, and the prohibition of the use of mobile phones. That said, 2013 saw 1,583 accidents take place on our roads. 18 incidents were fatal, while 265 were grievous, a number that many would argue is too high. And it is this, in part, that has led the Government to launch the new Road Safety Strategy Malta (2014-2024). This Strategy is working to reduce fatalities by 50% grievous injuries by 30% and slight injuries by 20% by 2020. It will also entail a concerted effort to improve the quality of the roads, to have safer vehicles, to improve compliance with legislation and road rules and to promote a road safety culture at all levels of society.
Scan the Road. Most of us only really watch the car in front of us, but experts advise that it’s the car that’s two ahead that we should be keeping an eye on. Are they turning off? Are they braking? Watching them will help you to anticipate potential problems faster and more effectively.
Keep Back. Did you know it can take you 13 metres to stop when you’re driving at 48km per
Belt up. Always fasten your seatbelt whether you’re the driver or a passenger. Children should never sit on an adult’s lap in the front passenger seat. If your child won’t sit alone, sit in the back with your child next to you and fasten your seat belts. Never place a baby carrier facing backwards on the front passenger seat. If the car’s air bags expand, the child will be crushed against the seat.

A&H SKINCARE
IS YOUR ECZEMA
controlling your life?
t
he word eczema comes from a Greek word that means to effervesce or bubble or boil over. The condition is also referred to Atopic Dermatitis. Many people have eczema on their elbows or behind their knees. Babies often have eczema on the face, especially the cheeks and chin. They can also have it on the scalp, trunk (chest and back), and outer arms and legs. In adults and children, eczema can manifest on the neck, wrists, and ankles, and in areas that bend, like the inner elbow and knee. There are various types of eczema and it is also shown differently on people. It may even look different or affect different parts of your body from time to time. Eczema can be classified as mild, moderate or severe. It is also a general fact that people with eczema suffer from dry, sensitive skin and the winter climate tends to affect it badly. The intense itch caused by eczema may be so bad that one can scratch the skin until it bleeds. This leads to more inflammation and itching. Eczema sufferers, or those whose loved ones have eczema, regularly tell us just how much this debilitating skin condition limits them from day to day.
IF YOU HAVE ECZEMA, YOU MIGHT RELATE TO THE FOLLOWING. a. Your skin is so itchy that it stops you concentrating in the daytime and prevents you from sleeping at night. b.Eczema on your face, hands and eyelids makes you feel embarrassed in front of others. c. Thick, sticky eczema treatment creams stain your sheets and make it difficult to get dressed after application. d.You’re worried about using artificial chemical products, such as topical steroids, on your skin and want a natural eczema remedy.
SALCURA – Your Steroid-Free Solution Our eczema treatments provide a quick-fix solution for irritating flare-ups and also help to manage the condition long-term. Instantly calming your skin, they can break the unbearable itch-scratch cycle. We use natural ingredients in our products, such as manuka, tea tree and sea buckthorn oils. This makes them suitable for babies and children as well adults
and they can be used all over the body. There are no known side effects and you can even use our eczema treatments if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Salcura DermaSpray ‘Intensive’ is a practical everyday-use moisturising spray for those prone to eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea and other related dry skin conditions. It nourishes the skin and effectively breaks the itch-scratch-itch cycle. DermaSpray Intensive is 98% natural, and contains no steroids or harsh chemicals that will further irritate sensitive skins. With Sea Buckthorn for nourishment and cell regeneration, Lavender to calm and balance, and Rosemary for its ability to support collagen development and eliminate free radicals.
What are the benefits of a spray? Eczema can damage the skin’s protective membrane, and while traditional creams and emollients can help to manage this by creating an artificial barrier, DermaSpray Intensive works differently. Easily and quickly absorbed, the spray liquid goes straight to work deep down on newly forming cells, boosting healthy skin as it develops. There is no need to rub our sprays in, which is a relief when the skin is very sore. The spray formula can also be used on the scalp and hairline, and on hard-to-reach areas such as the back. Non-greasy and non-staining, this light liquid is rapidly absorbed allowing you to dress almost immediately after use. With no known side effects, it is suitable for use during pregnancy.
WHY IT WORKS The presence of Sea Buckthorn Oil, Lavender and Aloe combine with the fine spray action to soothe and calm the skin. The high natural nutrient content is suspended in a fine liquid solution allowing for deeper, easier absorption into the skin. The regenerating nutrients reaching the lower skin cells combine with additional anti-bacterial agents to restore the skin while reducing the risk of infection. Itching is caused by over-production of histamine in the skin. Essential oils in the Salcura ‘Intensive’ formulation, specifically Manuka Oil, have anti-histamine properties and so reduce the propensity to itch. SALCURA is rich in omega oils and aids skin healing by promoting the regeneration of skin tissue. All SALCURA products are totally free from steroids, hormones, cortisones, peroxide, alcohol, parabens, antibiotics. Salcura wash range is not tested on animals. Salcura products are available in all leading pharmacies. Distributed by Liberty Business Culture Ltd. T. 2141 0008 E. info@libertymalta.com.mt. Furthermore, it is a source of Omega 3 and 6 which are fatty acids that help in the normal function of all body systems.
