LIFE & Style
which chrtmas CHARACTER ARE YOU? COMPILED BY ANNA MARIA GATT
1. It’s a public holiday in December. You decide to: a. spend the day around the shops buying presents for your loved ones; b.stay at home decorating the Christmas tree with the whole family; c. catch up with office work, read and answer work-related emails.
5. Your boss asks someone to take care of decorating the office. a. You go round the Christmas shops choosing the best bargains. b.You invite everyone else to participate in a team effort. c. You sulk and say that it is only a waste of money.
2. What do you think about shops opening till late on Sunday during December? a. It is a must for shopaholics like me. b.Maybe open only during the morning? Salespeople have families too. c. From a business point of view, you give Sunday shopping a thumbs up.
6. Imagine you run a business firm. It’s Christmas Eve and you: a. organise a Christmas party in the afternoon after a morning of work; b.give everyone a full day off; c. open the office as usual, with normal hours. 7. On Boxing Day, you a. go through your presents and appreciate each and every one of them; b.keep on celebrating with your loved ones and treasure every moment; c. go back to work even if you don’t have to.
3. The best thing about Christmas is: a. giving and receiving presents; b.being together; c. a positive balance sheet. 4. At the office you are organising a Secret Santa activity. You: a. get excited about choosing the right present for your ‘secret’ colleague; b.suggest also organizing an event to collect money for charity; c. opt out of the activity – no one needs your presents.
8. Your resolution for 2015 is: a. being happy and fulfilled; b.peace and serenity within the family ; c. succeeding in adding more zeroes to your bank account.
RESULTS Most of us look forward for Christmas, but some consider this time to just another week or month in the year. It might be because of something which happened in the past or it might be because of your personality. There are people who live for Christmas but tend to lose sight of its real significance and think only of surrounding themselves with presents, decorations, fun and laughter. We might describe these people as Santa Claus, always ready to create a festive atmosphere wherever they are. If your answers are mostly A's, then you are the jolly fellow who travels with his
reindeer, distributing joy and gifts. At the extreme are people who live only for work and who only wish to be successful in their career. These people might need more affection and more acceptance since their attitude could be because of loneliness. These people are like Ebenezer Scrooge, the fictional character in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, far more interested in counting his money than in spreading joy. If you answers are mostly C's, try to change your attitude and feel once more in your heart the warmth, love and affection of this special time of year. Even if we feel alienated
and forget that Christmas is about a baby who transformed the world, we must admit that the Christmas story is one of the best stories ever told and one we can pass onto others. If you answered mostly B's, then you are one of those who feel emotional when attending Midnight Mass or when watching children walking in procession behind the statue of the infant Jesus. You can be described as the Angel who shared the good news and brought peace and joy into the hearts of even the poorest ones. You might want to reflect on this and let the real significance of Christmas relight that spark.

being. I do not have a single favourite way of relaxing. My approach is to vary my activities as much as possible. My favourites are jogging at least three times weekly, which gives me a significant mental and physical boost, and, in summer, long distance swimming. Socialising is also something I enjoy alot, especially the ‘al fresco’ type in summer. If this is then complemented with good food and laughter surrounded by those I love, it makes it special. However, there are times when I need to be just in my own company. Fortunately the beauty of Gozo, where I live, provides me with excellent opportunities for long walks in the countryside on my own. After a hectic day I really find it helpful to unwind watching comedy on TV. After a few months, I generally need to change scenery completely so I go abroad. Theatre is also a passion, and I watch stand up comedy each time I go to London. Fortunately, I get to go there quite frequently both for work and leisure. Variety is the spice of life and I try to keep it that way.
Mr Melvin Gouder Consultant eye surgeon
Being a consultant eye surgeon leaves you with very limited free time. I specialised in ophthalmic surgery in the UK and returned to Malta a few years ago when my son was born. Spending time with the family has always been a priority and being a parent is already very taxing. Still, I occasionally find some time to do something just because I enjoy it.
I have always had a special interest in photography and I believe that as an eye surgeon it is only natural to produce or reproduce enticing images using a medium that is based after all on the human eye - the camera. I am miles away from being a professional photographer but I have always done my best in a noble hobby which has such an enormous impact on our lives directly and indirectly. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had this special interest in sounds – mainly ordered and rhythmical sounds which most of us know as music. Listening to music everyday is as essential to me as breathing. I never mastered any musical instrument but I’ve learnt to appreciate music, including experimental music from different eras, mainly from the 60s till today. Although I appreciate the occasional unplugged concert I have to admit my favourite is synthesised music of the 70s and 80s. I am the ultimate fan of musicians like Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. Pink Floyd’s music has inspired me for three decades and is still my ultimate favourite.

Mr Joseph Debono General Surgeon, Chairperson of the Department of Surgery and member of the Military and Hospitaller Order As Chairperson of the Department of Surgery and with a clinical practice that is very demanding I am always looking forward to spending time in a hobby that relaxes me. Until a couple of years ago, my favourite off duty interest was science fiction and fantasy, whether books, films, or TV. Star Trek was and still is my absolute favourite. Then two years ago, quite a few kilos overweight and feeling unhealthy, thanks to encouragement from my wife, I ventured into the world of sports. I was lucky to start with an excellent trainer who encouraged me and built up my strength and abilities gradually so I didn’t give up as I used to in the past. This was coupled with healthier eating – not a special diet as I find diets difficult to sustain long term. My life changed completely. I started losing weight and looking and feeling good. This gave me the incentive to continue. My competitive nature and my need to achieve led me to try different events, not to
Dr Gregory Attard Dr Attard is a general practitioner and a professional mountaineer Excerpts from my blog describe best what I do when I am not working – mountaineering. My recent blog, written in Tibet, is called “the freedom of the hills”. Mountaineers are uncomplicated people. For the select few who have discovered the ‘freedom of the hills’, life is really simple. On a hard climb, the magnitude of the quest and the cost of failure overshadow all other worries. For a fleeting moment, you are at one with nature. There is nothing more important than the here and now. You might think that the mountain environment is unpredictable. That storms, avalanches, falls, equipment failure and altitude are all out to get you. However, in reality, every climber has two major nemeses on the mountain: inexperience and overconfidence. These are the two real reasons why some people never return from a climb. The rest can be anticipated, avoided or tackled.
win but to be able to say- I can do it. Over the last two years I have run the half marathon, kayaked around Malta, swum from Gozo to Malta, and participated with other gym members in other events such as the Tough Mudder obstacle run in UK. I am also practising ballroom and Latin dancing with my wife. This has proven to be great fun and a way to spend time with my better half while being active. My next challenge is to take up triathlon competition. The most difficult thing is to find time for the training. Early mornings or late nights are the norm. However, the training itself energises me. After the morning sessions I feel that I am ready to face any challenge, and evening training revives me. I look forward to these sessions especially if they are designed to prepare me for a specific challenge. For anyone considering a change to a healthier lifestyle, my advice is to take things slowly, setting attainable targets and achieving an early target before moving onto another one. I found the support of a professional trainer to be priceless as together we would set the goal and time frame and work to achieve it. I also try to find time for some philanthropic activities. I am an active member of the Military and Hospitaller Order, an international organisation mainly involved with the care of lepers but with other fund raising goals. Currently we are raising funds for a multi-faith hospital in Jerusalem. I help out with the annual art auction for the Community Chest Fund and actively support Europa Donna Malta and Action for Breast Cancer Foundation in their mission to support patients with Breast cancer. And after all this, I still find time for my Star Trek!
Mountaineers are not daredevils. The risks we take are calculated. Every climb is planned scientifically considering all the odds and possibilities. We put in time, money, sweat and pain for we know that the reward we seek is immense – a prize so personal that the majority cannot even comprehend. In another blog I jotted down more notes on my return to Kathmandu after a very close call coming down Everest. Arriving back to Kathmandu at the end of an expedition was somewhat disorienting. Some are more affected than others but we all shared the stigmata of the mountain. When the cheeks of a climber are burned and blistered after a climb the Sherpas refer to this phenomenon rather poetically as the “Everest Kiss”. The truth is – and I can vouch for it – the relationship between a man and the mountain he decides to climb is deep, intimate and filled with passion. There is nothing more infectious than an idea, the thought of a climb, a summit, which grows and expands in a susceptible and vulnerable brain and eventually it captivates, infatuates, mesmerises and finally completely takes over.
Dr Joseph Mizzi Dr Mizzi is a paediatrician working mainly in the neonatal intensive care unit at Mater Dei Hospital and in the community. He is also a lecturer. When I’m off duty I love to spend time with my family – whether it’s a date with my wife while our children are at school, doing homework or playing ‘snakes and ladders’ with the children, or outings with the family in Gozo or the countryside in Malta. We make it a point to have breakfast together as a family every morning, and read the Bible and pray before bed, as well as reading a short story about two fictitious children, Anna and Bertu. I take my and my family’s spiritual life seriously and joyfully. Sunday morning is dedicated to church and Sunday School in an evangelical community.

t seems like only a short while ago that I met up with five amazing women I had interviewed earlier for A&H. Five years had passed from the magazine’s inception. The editor had decided to feature five people I
had interviewed, asking one interviewee from each year to be cover girls. We had a wonderful day together and I remember feeling incredibly inspired by these lovely ladies. Another five years have passed, and this time I
had the pleasure of revisiting some of the equally inspiring people I have had the pleasure to interview over the past year. True to form, they have moved forward and their news is even more exciting than when we last met.

Despite his hemiplegia he has learned to adapt to his circumstances to achieve his goals. Survivors Malta members look forward to the opening of the coffee shop with Jacob’s promise of a complimentary first coffee (and that includes me, I’m told – thanks, Jacob.) With his altruistic acts and cheeky smile, Jacob has earned himself quite a following throughout his journey to recovery. Wherever he goes people stop him to ask if they can shake his hand or even give him a hug, thanking him for inspiring them. Jacob is more than happy to oblige as grinning he tells them: “Go ahead ... sure!” He and his family, in turn, thank his supporters, pointing out that they motivate him to keep going. His followers also look forward to the forthcoming publication of a book telling his story to those that need to hear it, all of the proceeds of which will go to charity.

Jacob and Sarah Cachia After enjoying a relaxing summer, Jacob Cachia is now back at MCAST and fully geared up for his studies. Over the summer he had a change of heart about his future career, as most teenagers tend to do. Initially, Jacob planned to study IT to become a computer programmer, but now he has become very outgoing and a people person, the total opposite to the way he used to be. So he’s decided he doesn’t want a life behind a desk. He

REAL Jacob and his family have never earned any money from telling his story. It wasn’t told for glory, fame or even for public sympathy. His story was told because it had to be told, simply to help others see that there can be light at the end of the tunnel. Based on this philosophy, Jacob and his mother Sarah started the support group Survivors Malta on Facebook. The group has been a success with membership that grows daily, and survivors sharing their stories to help others who are facing the same situation. “There’s no greater gift than that,” Sarah says. “Some things money just cannot buy and it is found on Survivors Malta the place to go to be inspired.”

“My main objective is to see off CF – Cystic Fibrosis. The events never stop as the planning never does. Fundraising events are organised on a continuous basis. Many friends bring along other friends, the word spreads, and thanks to everyone’s generosity, funds are raised to continue funding the research for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. “This year there were once again a number of events, including some friends running the Royal Parks Half Marathon and a wine tasting event which had a very good attendance. The most awaited event is without doubt the November party, which is always sold out. This year we sold over 900 tickets, which is a success solely in itself. “All of this would not be possible without the support of numerous friends and family members and my partner Jean-Marc, who is now also training to run the London Marathon to raise funds for CF research. Everyone is always there to provide support, whether through fundraising or if i’m having a bad day. “Besides my ‘public’ life, what I enjoy most is being mummy to Franny. Does size and shape matter? The relationship between women and their bodies is a complex and intimate one. Many women perceive their breasts as the focus of their femininity and an important aspect of their self-image and self-confidence. Anything that has a visible impact on the breasts will deeply influence the quality of a woman’s outlook on life and her general well-being. There are many reasons which prompt women to ask themselves whether breast surgery might be the appropriate answer for them. Contrary to popular belief, most breast surgeries are performed for medical purposes rather than aesthetic ones. A HEARTY LAUGH CAN HELP YOU UNWIND, BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY, PROTECT YOUR HEART AND MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD. DANIELA ALLEN REPORTS. There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour. Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
f
ew of us would argue with Charles Dickens’ famous words. Laughter makes you feel good in the moment and that feeling stays with you, even after a hectic day or week. There are good reasons for this. “Biologically speaking, laughter increases the secretion of natural chemicals, catecholamines and endorphins in the brain,” says psychologist and psychotherapist Dott. Edward Curmi. “It also decreases cortisol secretion and lowers the sedimentation rate, implying a better immune response.” Dott. Curmi says laughter also appears to have a positive effect on many cardiovascular and respiratory problems. In addition, it relaxes muscles, which improves our ability to tolerate pain. So, one can say that humour is an excellent way of keeping well physically and mentally. From a psychological point of view, Dott Curmi says humour is the foundation of good mental health. “Throughout my clinical experience, when asking individuals and groups what is most important for good health, humour invariably tops
the list, followed by love and faith, which many people feel have deluded them.” Few people would deny that a good sense of humour is essential for a successful marriage or friendship. “People crave laughter,” Dott Curmi
says. “When someone dear to us is unhappy, we do our utmost to cheer them up ourselves.” To Sigmund Freud, jokes seemed so important that he even wrote a book on the subject. “We all know about the magnetism of laughter in our life. In fact, we often call a funny person’“the life and soul of the party’,” says Dott. Curmi On the other hand, most of the time, a lack of sense of humour indicates underlying problems like depression and alienation.”

Ozi & Jay host The Big Breakfast show, recently launched on XFM 100.2 They are renowned for their unique sense of humour and putting a smile on people's face every morning. This is what they had to say about laughter. David Borg (Ozi) says it is the banter he shares with those close to him – his wife, family and friends – that makes him laugh most: “It is the sort of free comic flow in a relaxed environment which really gives me the greatest pleasure and the platform to be myself. Considering that Jay, with whom I have worked and been friends for around 17 years, is in my close group of friends, our radio show is very much an extension of the laughs we share together as friends though slightly edited.” Ozi hopes that his profession gives his audience a few smiles and laughs in what he says can be a hard life. “I hope they take that smile into the rest of their day and again look forward to starting the following day with a smile too.” Asked about what he believes makes the Maltese laugh most he says it is hard to say and it differs from one person to another: “however I believe that they mostly like to laugh at what is going on around them and what is topical in the world. In groups they also like to laugh at one another. I also find the Maltese to be talented and creative practical jokers”. Ozi agrees that laughter is the best medicine “without a shadow of doubt. It is clinically proven and I put my backing behind it 100%. It always makes me feel better, that is for sure. There is nothing like a good laugh. This is why I recommend to always start 16

I like to be topical and edgy, without needing to spell it out for everyone to get.” He believes his profession gives people a safe form of stress release: “I also like to think that the show, besides all the laughs and such, can be uplifting and perhaps even inspirational.” He said even if just one person takes something from the radio show and applies it to their life for the better, that gives him a great sense of accomplishment. “When people come up to me and remind me about something we had said days or weeks ago – in some cases, even years ago – then I know they’ve taken something positive from the show.” Jason says anything a person can relate to and which makes them feel they are not alone on the same “sinking ship” makes for a great reaction among the Maltese: “I think a lot of people in the media don’t give the Maltese audience enough credit. We like to pigeon hole everyone as liking one thing or one style only. But they’re wrong.” “Positive energy in the form of laughter can only be beneficial for the mind, body and soul,” he says. “Laughter really is the best medicine.” Born in Canada, Jason moved to Malta in 1991. His radio career started when the first station in Gozo, Calypso 102, opened in 1993. At the time, aged 21, Jason was presenting a 50’s & 60’s radio show and has been in the business ever since, with the exception of a few recent years when he worked with a leading online media company. Jason is Station Manager at XFM 100.2 and a professional voice over artist. He is married and has a son.

Pack your hand luggage with an extra book or magazine together with a change of clothes and underwear, basic toiletries and any medication you take regularly. You’ll need an extra change of clothes for each child, especially if you are travelling with very small children, and a few instant distractions for long waits. Delays can be really boring especially when you’re coming back home or if you are in a small airport where shops and cafés close at night.
When on holiday in cold weather, dress like an onion in several thin layers of clothing. That’s more practical than wearing just a woollen sweater and a thick jacket. Inside historical places, hotels, restaurants and department stores, central heating will be in full swing. Since we are not used to central heating, dressing too warmly means feeling uncomfortable when indoors unless we’re able to shed layers at will. It’s best to wear thermal underwear, then a light long-sleeved top, a cardigan and a jacket. A scarf will help keep your neck and chest warm. Once you are indoors you can shed the extra layers and still feel comfortable.
Travel as light as possible Travelling light is a must since most airlines are very strict about luggage weight. Winter clothes tend to be bulky, so avoid carrying extra items such as gifts. If you are on your way to visit relatives or friends abroad, there is no need to carry presents all the way from home. An ideal and more practical alternative would be to buy presents online and ship them to your relatives’ or friends’ home addresses.
Arm yourself against the flu If you are travelling to a cold country, consult your doctor beforehand on how to prevent the flu. If you take the annual vaccine, then take it a few weeks before travelling. If not, ask your doctor to suggest some vitamins you can take and some medicine and nasal sprays which you can use while abroad. Carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser at all times and rub your hands frequently to avoid picking up and spreading germs.
Use the web Planning makes travel easier, especially in winter. Use the web to make it even easier. Check weather forecasts and if you are going for a long drive, check traffic updates too to avoid ruining your day sitting in a traffic jam with a carload of grumpy, bored children. A GPS device helps in locating the nearest parking places. Planning where to park before hitting the road keeps stress to a minimum. Print boarding passes, entrance tickets and train tickets beforehand to avoid queuing in bad weather.

moisturiser immediately from head to toe. Sunscreen and lip balm should be on top of your list when packing even though you are travelling to a cold destination. Experts recommend an SPF30 when skiing, applied every two hours. Another important item to pack are gloves. Even the smallest cut can become a fissure with the cold and can easily become infected.
Keep yourself hydrated Central heating, dry air and cold temperatures can dehydrate you faster than you think. In a dry atmosphere, you lose water with every breath you take. Remember to keep drinking water even when you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration can make you feel light-headed and dizzy. If you feel your heart racing and haven’t had any water for hours, drink lots of water as soon as you can and rest for a few minutes.

Protect your skin If you are going up on the mountains, the low temperatures can be a shock. Start using facial creams instead of lotions as creams moisturise and protect much better against humidity and temperature extremes. Take shorter showers with lukewarm water. MARK GALEA TALKS TO ANNA MARIA GATT ABOUT CAMARADERIE ALONG THE ROADS ON TWO WHEELS, AND WHY THE WEASELS PACK IS A MEN ONLY GROUP
i
t is Sunday, early morning. Some people are gladly cosy in bed with their alarm clocks switched off. Others are still coming in from a night out clubbing while older ones are switching on their kettles for their first cup of coffee. In the quiet hours of the morning, a group of cyclists are preparing their bikes to hit the road for a long ride and they’re looking forward to it. It’s not just to challenge their physical abilities but also to meet up with their friends from different walks of life but with a common passion: cycling. I met Mark Galea, founder and member of the Weasels Pack to ask him what makes the group tick. “It all started in 2009,” he tells us. “We are not an official cycling team. We consider ourselves an informal group with no formal structure. We are just a gathering of friends.” Mark has always been involved in sport. “I have been working in the military since 1992 and this instilled in me a love for outdoor activity and physically demanding adventures,” he says. “I was also part of the National Judo team till 2002.” His involvement in cycling started with a minor misfortune. While practising Judo, he suffered a groin injury and the doctor's orders were that the only exercise he could do was cycling. “That is how I ended up on the bike,” Mark explains. He participated in his first LifeCycle challenge in 2002. “During the Pozzallo-Assisi Lifecycle Challenge, together with 25 other cyclists, we cycled the distance in ten days. After this I became hooked on cycling and did four further Lifecycle Challenges. Still I did not really belong to any cycling group.”
Mark’s love for cycling led him to meet other cycling enthusiasts and together they started organising rides. And so, in 2009, the Weasels Pack was born, bringing together people from all walks of life. In the beginning the Weasels Pack included only three members: Mark Galea, Steve Chetcuti who is now a well-known triathlete and Mark’s brother. More people joined and, five years later, there are about forty members, 25 of whom meet regularly. “Our group includes a vet, a paediatrician, business people, fire fighters, former national and former international football players, IT people and teachers. It is worth mentioning that two members of the group are past ‘Gieh ir-Repubblika’ awardees: Victor Calvagna and Carmel Busuttil. John Buttigieg and Silvio, two former players are also part of our group,” Mark says. The Weasels Pack was a huge success and the secret of this is the mutual respect between members. “Irrespective of the individual’s level of fitness, the strong sense of mutual support among the pack prevents anyone from feeling left out. It is also emphasised that the pack is a fun group and does not compete. It is mostly focused on exploring the remote areas of Malta and Gozo from the saddle of a bike,” Mark explains. Cycling can be intensive and all members of the Weasels Pack train on their own during the week. “We meet as a pack only on Sundays and Public Holidays. For some members, the Sunday ride is the only exercise they do during the week since they have very demanding jobs in the construction industry.”

Mark explains that he trains six or seven times a week. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, he goes for a run while on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays he swims and on Sunday it’s cycling day. “We are all enthusiastic about sport and we gladly join each other in training sessions. In summer last year, four members of the pack took up swimming and every Saturday morning we meet for an open sea swim,” says Mark. Apart from the Sunday ride, the Pack also plans special expeditions such as a ride around Gozo or even abroad. The group is really close and they discuss new routes together. But, unfortunately, the group tends to find problems especially caused by irresponsible driving of some drivers. “In 2009, one of our members was seriously injured in a traffic accident. Since then, we have avoided main roads whenever possible. The positive thing about this bad experience is that it pushed us to explore more of the remote offroad areas of Malta and Gozo,” says Mark. The memory of the accident is still vivid, but Mark says he tries to recall the special moments too – and there are more of those than that terrible experience way back in 2009. “We always manage to spice up our rides either by a good laugh or simply by visiting a historical spot,” he smiles. “And of course there is
always the group photo. All our rides are well photographed with the highlight picture being the ride group photo.” Mark recalls the time when the Weasels Pack were taken to court by an owner who claimed that the riders were trespassing on his private property: “Actually this area forms part of a national heritage site and is therefore accessible to all. Eventually the case was decided in our favour and we were all cleared of the trespass charges.” Most parents buy bicycles for their children but we don't see many families cycling together. However, participation in cycling events is on the increase. “There are many cycling competitions in Malta, however I still think that people who take up cycling mostly enjoy the fun and social aspect of the sport. The lack of proper infrastructure for cycling training is preventing it from evolving into a major competitive sport in Malta”. Mark says that Malta is a fantastic place for mountain biking but he says he doesn’t really have a favourite route: “It is like listening to music. Which route we take, depends on the mood we are in. Sometimes we are keen to climb hills, on other days we just follow trails along the coast, and sometimes we just go for an urban ride hopping from one village to the other. The only must is the presence of an old
village bar or a band club along the route for our tea and toast break.” He’s enthusiastic about the camaraderie among the Weasel Pack members: “The relationship among us is very deep. The age of the group ranges from the late teens to the late fifties and yet everyone interacts very well.” Reckless driving can be a great hazard to cyclists but cyclists need to look out for themselves too. “The rule of thumb with cyclists on the road is visibility,” Mark says. “It is important that you are as visible as possible. Secondly, it is important to follow the procedure of cycling in a single line when cycling through main roads which ideally should be avoided. Helmets are a must and lighting is indispensable when cycling early in the morning or at night. You need to observe traffic rules and ensure eye contact with car drivers at intersections.” The Weasels Pack has now started on a totally new project – a trip to Belgium, co-ordinated by a Belgian Weasel Pack member, Jan, who is married to a Maltese. “We are planning to organise a cycling trip to Belgium to pay our respect to fallen Maltese soldiers who fought in WWI with the British Forces. From what we have found out so far, it appears that these victims’ graves were never physically visited by anyone from Malta.” He adds that, over the years the Weasels Pack has also become synonymous with charity events and since Dr. Calvagna is part of the group, most events are organised in aid of Puttinu Cares. To end the interview the obvious question arises ”How can one join the Weasels Pack?” Mark smiles and says ”The Weasels Pack is a ‘men only’ group.” Noticing my reaction, he adds, “It’s not that we are against female cyclists but since the group was formed, the ‘men only’ approach has worked extremely well. If we open up the group, we risk disrupting the amazing group dynamics we have. We will see how this will evolve over time.” Facebook WEASELS PACK MALTA

Eat Out,
EAT HEALTHY WORRIED ABOUT HOW FESTIVE EATING OUT WILL RUIN YOUR DIET? JO CARUANA OUTLINES SOME HEALTHY AND HELPFUL TIPS FOR EATING OUT WHILE WATCHING YOUR WEIGHT.
m
ost of us stick to the rules when we’re eating at home. We cook based on healthy portion sizes, avoid adding salt or fat when we don’t need to, and vary our diet to include lots of fruit and vegetables. On the contrary, when eating out, we often end up giving into temptation and going a little overboard. “Eating out is a real thorn in my side when it comes to staying healthy and trim,” explains my friend Luisa, who dines out at least three or four times each week. “Both my partner and I entertain a lot for work, so
we’re usually trying to impress the people we’re with. That doesn’t exactly lend itself to eating leanly. “Plus, we find eating out really convenient, especially as we both work long hours. It’s usually so much quicker and more fun to meet at a restaurant after work and to have dinner there. That way, when we get home, we don’t have to worry about slicing, dicing and dishes, but can just collapse on the sofa and relax. That said, I have noticed a difference in my waistline since we adopted this approach. I have gained a few kilos and am now struggling to lose them.” It seems that Luisa’s problem is a pretty common one. A quick research activity on social media
highlights that most people struggle to turn down temptations when they’re eating out. “I’m usually very good at cooking soups or making salads when I am at home,” says one online buddy of mine. “But I usually opt for the pizza or pasta option in a restaurant, followed by dessert – the more indulgent the better. You see, even though I eat out quite a lot these days, dining in a restaurant still feels like a treat, so I don’t feel the need to limit myself in the same way I do at home. The only problem is that eating at home has become more of a rarity than eating out, so the balance is tipping in the opposite direction.”

And that’s exactly where most of us seem to have a problem: recognising that eating out doesn’t need to mean eating badly. Here are some useful tips to help you eat well when in a café or restaurant, especially over the indulgent festive season. • If you know you’re going to be eating out and it’s going to be a special occasion, hold back a little a day or two before. Try to drink lots of water to flush out your toxins, and eat plenty of fibre. Also, try to have a smaller breakfast or lunch on the day to make up for your meal out –but

don’t starve yourself either, as that is counterproductive. Choosing the restaurant is crucial. Whenever possible, avoid ‘all you can eat’ buffets as there is a natural tendency to want to try everything. Instead, pick somewhere with a focus on fresh ingredients and a varied menu that provides homemade options instead of processed products. If you’re having a hot drink, ask for skimmed milk, unsweetened tea or coffee, and no cream. As the weather gets cooler, it’s easy to have three or four hot drinks a day, so it’s best to cut back on sugar and fat where possible. Often, portion sizes at restaurants add calories without us even realising, so we end up consuming way more than we would at home. To combat this, you could have a side dish or a starter as your main course, or could share your main dish with a friend. Alternatively ask for a starter-sized portion, or for half of your portion to be packed away ‘to go’ so that you can eat it the next day. Avoid the ‘freebies’ that come with your meal, such as bread and butter or prawn crackers, as these add calories without you even realising. If you really can’t wait, have some wholemeal bread with no butter, or ask for a glass of tomato juice to drink. • Salads are a great start to any meal because they’re packed full of fibre and fill you up. To ensure you’re making a good salad choice, ask for yours to be made up of just fresh and grilled vegetables, with your choice of dressing on the side. Citrus juice or a quick glug of olive oil and vinegar are ideal alternatives to creamier dressings.
• If you’re in a big group, try to order your dish first as this will stop you being tempted by what everyone else is having. Don’t be shy about making your own requests, say, for a smaller portion, or to add vegetables instead of chips. • If you really want pasta, ask for wholemeal instead of white. Creamier sauces contain lots more fat than tomato-based ones, so opt for the latter if you can. Avoid topping your dish with lots of cheese as that can pile on extra calories in a jiffy. • When it comes to your main course, shun anything that is buttery, breaded, buttered, fried, pan-fried, creamed, scalloped or au gratin. Instead, look out for dishes that are grilled, baked, steamed, broiled, poached, stir-fried, roasted or blackened. Ask for any skin to be removed and for any sauces to be served on the side. • Finally, stay on track with dessert by picking something that is fruit-based and not laden with syrup or cream. Sorbet or frozen yoghurt is a good choice, while one scoop of ice-cream is a relatively guilt-free choice too. As with everything, enjoy a little bit of what you like because depriving yourself won’t work in the long-run.

party TIME
FREE FLOWING ALCOHOL, FEASTING AND PARTYING CAN MAKE YOU SHED YOUR CLOTHES ALONG WITH YOUR INHIBITIONS. HOW DO YOU REALLY FEEL ABOUT HAVING A ONE NIGHT STAND? THREE STAFF PARTY ORGANISERS TELL ALL.
Edward, 32 years, accountant, single “I’ve been responsible for organising our firm’s staff party since I joined the firm four years ago. All employees are nearly the same age and our staff party lasts for hours. We always try to organise it in the trendiest venues with the latest music. I have to admit that I look forward to it throughout the year. Everyone makes that extra effort. In fact, I overhear our firm’s female employees discussing what they are going to wear. Some of them even start flirting during the weeks before, as if to set the ball rolling. What actually happens during the party is quite normal - people chatting, moving from one group to the other, loads of photos taken. As the hours go by and the older ones start leaving, then the real party starts and people start coupling up. At first, they’re just joking but then things start to get serious. At times I feel that certain girls fake being drunk to be able to take the first step towards the hottest guys in the firm. I am sure that there were some one-night stands after last year’s party. The problem is that the girls tend to take these one-offs seriously while we guys just want to have fun. Sincerely, I wouldn’t want to start a serious relationship with a girl who allowed me to have sex with her after flirting during the staff party.”
Charmaine, 27 years, salesgirl, in a relationship “We are all female employees, so our staff dinners are not that much fun. I try to organise the even in a central restaurant so that afterwards we continue to celebrate by bar-hopping. Since two years ago, when I was still single, I used to look forward to this part of the celebration. Men were easier to chat to and I took long to prepare myself to look glamorous. Once I was tempted into going to bed with a complete, gorgeous stranger whom I met at a local bar. 30

We started to chat. One thing led to another and I found myself in his car. He was on holiday in Malta and kept urging me to join him in his hotel room. Having had quite a few drinks, I wasn’t reasoning. All I could see was this guy falling madly in love with me – which, of course, he wasn’t.
Luckily enough, I stopped in time when my mobile phone rang. I came to my senses and realised that I had to leave since my colleagues were waiting for me to take them home

It doesn’t bother me if I end up with a guy younger than me or with a married top manager. We are all adults so we can decide for ourselves Luckily enough, I stopped in time when my mobile phone rang. I came to my senses and realised that I had to leave since my colleagues were waiting for me to take them home. I gave the man my mobile number and asked him to phone me to meet again while he was in Malta. Obviously, that phone call never arrived. That was a lucky escape. I could have fallen into a trap and lived to regret it.”
Pamela, 38 years, hotel receptionist, separated “Working in a hotel makes everything so much easier. We organise our staff party at the hotel and we are given an overnight stay as a complimentary gift. Our parties can be described in one word: outrageous. Even the hotel managers and owners join the fun and participate actively in the games
we organise. At times, these games take a dangerous twist where people are coupled up for the sake of the game. We had some disasters especially when, in the morning, people woke up with a hangover to find a chambermaid or a waiter in their bed. This happens nearly every year and at times we bet between us about who will end up with whom during this year’s party. I really don’t bother about having a one-night stand. Now I am not in a relationship anymore, I am free and so I can have fun my own way. It doesn’t bother me if I end up with a guy younger than me or with a married top manager. We are all adults so we can decide for ourselves. In the weeks after the party, there will be some gossip going around, but then the party is forgotten and, by February, everything is back to normal.”
If you thought one-night stands don’t really happen in Malta, you’re deluded. Being drunk can easily lead to a sex with a stranger which, without any precaution, can have serious consequences. Apart from the possibility of picking up a nasty, sexually transmitted disease, one-night stands carry other risks. Research shows that, when it comes to onenight stands, males and females are miles apart. As Edward confirmed, girls might think that a man finds them attractive, that he wanted to be with them and that is why he chose them for sex that night. On the contrary, studies in which males were interviewed show that when picking up someone for a one-night stand, a man chooses a girl well below his usual standards of what is beautiful, attractive and sexy. So, no woman should be flattered if a male wants to have sex with her on a whim, especially if she is drunk. Another new study concludes that, on onenight stands, males are in a win-win situation while women have lots to lose. Risks are greater for women and psychologically, a onenight stand can have a very negative impact on a woman. This study quotes women describing how they felt the morning after a one-night stand, using adjectives such as “I felt cheap”, “I felt dirty” and “I felt I lost respect for myself”. The majority of those interviewed confessed that they regretted what they had done. Nowadays, no one believes that the first date or the first sexual experience is the prelude to a long-term relationship. Some women feel that having a one-night means being labelled as ‘easy’. So they feel the need of explain to the man involved that that wasn’t their normal behaviour. Women want the man to feel special. Will he be flattered? Studies show that this depends on the type of person the man is. Most men will feel flattered, especially if they enjoy the sexual experience. Others, especially those who often have one-night stands, explain their attitude as a result of emptiness and loneliness. Some scientists predict that the gap between men’s and women’s views of one-night stands will narrow. They should only happen with mutual consent. Self-control can help you avoid disappointment. Having sex while drunk can lead to serious consequences so it’s best to avoid being alone in this situation. If you’ve had one too many, stick with your whole group of friends, rather than going off into a dark corner with just one person.

ABOUT NUTS
oping to ward off illness and enjoy longevity? Well, the elixir you are looking for may well be contained within a bag of nuts - most nuts, in fact, including cashews, walnuts, pecans, almonds, hazelnuts and even peanuts. One study in 2013 deemed nuts to be ‘as close to a superfood as you can hope to get’, while a long-term study of over 119,000 people in the UK highlighted that those who chomp regularly on nuts are more likely to live longer than those who don’t – despite other factors. Whether you believe in the notion of superfoods or not, nuts clearly have a lot going for them. They are packed full of cancer-fighting antioxidants and over-flowing with essential minerals including copper, zinc, iron, magnesium and manganese, all of which are needed for our organs to function effectively.
They are also a very good source of vitamins E and B, and ooze with Omega-3 fatty acids which are recommended for healthy brain function. “People are often put off by the fact that nuts contain fat,” says dietician Hannah Weir. “But the fats in nuts are mostly good fats that, when consumed moderately, can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Plus they’re full of fibre, so a few nuts will keep you going much longer than a bar of chocolate or even some fruit which makes them a great go-to snack if you’re feeling peckish.” Hannah’s advises having nuts on stand-by. “If you want to add more nuts to your diet, keep them on stand-by and have them between meals,” she says. “A golf ball-sized portion - about 30g - of unsalted nuts will give you many of the minerals and vitamins that you need, and keep you going till your next mealtime.”

NUTRITION IN A NUTSHELL Wondering which nuts to include in your diet? depending on your dietary requirements, certain nuts offer particular benefits.
Peanuts While we know we should all steer clear of the salted peanuts at the bar, raw and roasted peanuts are another story. The secret here is that peanuts are actually a ‘legume’ – just like a pea or bean – and are as cancerfighting as strawberries. The good mono-unsaturated fats and protein fill you up, while the fibre content will help keep your bowels regular. A handful of 28 peanuts has around 166 calories, which is a very healthy amount if you’re watching your weight. Cashews These nuts are one of the most popular for those on a vegetarian or vegan diet as they are packed full of protein, iron and zinc, which you would otherwise need to get from meat. Cashews are also rich in magnesium, which is linked to improving and retaining memory skills.
Pecans A favourite for use in cooking, pecans have actually been highlighted for reducing cholesterol thanks to their sterol content. 20 pecan halves have around 200 calories (which makes them an ideal snack) and are a great source of Vitamin E, Vitamin B3 and oleic acid. Pistachios With just 160 calories in 50 of these bright green beauties, pistachios are the least calorific option, but that doesn’t make them any less beneficial. They’re popular for their content of fibre, potassium and vitamin B6. The latter can help balance female hormones and even help men suffering from erectile dysfunction. As with peanuts, avoid the salted varieties if you’re hoping to focus on the health benefits.

Hazelnuts Once you’ve got them out of their tough little shells (or bought them ready-shelled, of course), these little gems pack quite a punch. They’re one of the most flavourful nuts to add to dishes especially when they’re roasted, and they’re rich in Vitamin E, zinc and mono-unsaturated fats. Expectant mums can also benefit from hazelnuts as they contain a good dose of folate.
Walnuts With around 185 calories in 14 halves, walnuts are a popular snack and they keep calories down while filling you up. These nuts are among the most antioxidant-packed of all, so they’re great for protecting your body and warding off cancers. Fibre, iron, zinc and calcium are added bonuses. Macadamia nuts Not a type most people will come across every day, macadamia nuts are a great source of fibre, iron, niacin, omega 3, calcium and potassium. They’re also packed with thiamine, which is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates to release energy for growth, nerve function and muscle tone.
Brazil nuts These are ideal for those with low thyroid function. They are a good source of the selenium, a factor in producing the active thyroid hormone. They also support immunity and help wounds to heal. Just three or four Brazil nuts a day will give you your recommend daily intake of selenium.

GO NUTS Want to get the full benefits of nuts? Eat a handful of mixed nuts (as opposed to one type), as each variety has different vitamins and antioxidants. Also eat the skin whenever possible, especially of nuts like almonds, as it is absolutely packed with nutrients. Wondering where best to store nuts? Try the freezer! Believe it or not, nuts don’t go hard when frozen, and they can be eaten within seconds. Storing nuts in the freezer keeps them fresh for longer, so you can grab a few when you’re feeling peckish.

ways to conol YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE
1Keep a healthy body weight
A higher than normal body weight often increases blood pressure. Losing excess weight, conversely, can bring it down. If you’re taking medication for blood pressure and you are overweight, losing the extra weight can make your medication more effective. Extra weight around your waist can increase your risk of high blood pressure even if the rest of your body is a normal size.
2Exercise regularly
The key word is ‘regularly’. Bingeing on exercise occasionally won’t work to maintain your blood pressure at a healthy level. A sudden burst of activity can be risky if you usually do not move around much. Exercise for 30 minutes at least three times a week. Exercising daily for an hour is even better. That can be split into three 20-minute walks. If you don’t normally do any exercise, you will see a change in your blood pressure within a few weeks. However, if you are not used to doing any exercise at all, ask your doctor for advice first.
3Eat properly
Eat lots of whole grains, vegetables and low-fat, unsweetened and unsalted food. Cut back on saturated fats, red meat and sugar. Eat more fresh fish, drink lots of water and read food labels when shopping. Avoid processed foods. Buy fresh, whenever possible. Most things in moderation and nothing in excess is a useful mantra to live by. If you have high blood pressure, consult your doctor about dietary changes and limits.
4Cut down on salt
WELLBEING
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE CAN AFFECT ANYONE, BUT SOME PEOPLE ARE MORE AT RISK. A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CAN HELP YOU AVOID OR REDUCE THE NEED FOR MEDICATION.
your palate time to adjust. Once you are used to low-salt foods, you won’t notice the difference.
5Reduce your alcohol intake
Small amounts of alcohol have a protective effect. Binge drinking pushes up pressure suddenly and intensely. More than one drink a day – or two if you are a man aged less than 65 – cancels out the protective effect, eventually raising your blood pressure and potentially reducing the effectiveness of medication. If you don’t normally drink alcohol, don’t take up the habit just to reduce your blood pressure. There are other, safer ways of doing it. If you drink regularly, cut down your intake gradually. Trying to stop drinking suddenly is difficult and has a rebound effect.
A sudden burst of activity can be risky if you usually do not move around much
Don’t add salt when cooking and eating. Avoid salted foods. Add flavor by using herbs and spices or citrus fruit zest. Grated ginger adds zing to a dull vegetable soup, for instance. Check food labels for sodium content. The salt content is double the sodium level so 1,000 mg of sodium translates into 2,000mg of salt, or roughly 1 teaspoonful. Processed foods have a high salt content. Don’t cut out salt drastically. Give
smoke and 6Avoid smoking
Nicotine raises blood pressure. The effect of a single cigarette lasts far longer than the cigarette itself. Smoking several cigarettes a day keeps your blood pressure high. Secondhand smoke isn’t any kinder. You get less of it than you do when smoking your own cigarette, but it still causes health problems including high blood pressure.

DERMALOGICA BIOSURFACE PEEL
Exfolia on reaches a new level DERMALOGICA BIOSURFACE PEEL IS A NEW BIPHASIC TREATMENT COMBINING ENZYMES AND ACIDS TOGETHER WITH NO DOWN TIME. GET SOME PEEL TIME UNDER YOUR BELT NOW. IT’S THE RIGHT TIME TO START. BY MARY VELLA
d
ermalogica BioSurface Peel can be used on different skin colours, skin types and skin conditions. You will have super results from the first treatment: • improved skin appearance • reduced skin roughness • minimized fine lines and wrinkles • fading out of pigmentation • reduced acne breakouts. Dermalogica BioSurface Peel is a revolutionary exfoliating facial treatment adapted for all skin colours and skin types – even sensitive skins – and skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation, aging skin, lines and wrinkles. The skin is prepared for this treatment with a skin prep solution of salicylic acid which is a degreaser and unblocks follicles and a keratolytic agent which weakens the bonds that hold the cells together and helps to facilitate the penetration of the enzymes, while it soothes and calms acneic and sensitive skins. Protein digesting enzymes of pumpkin, pineapple and papaya together with lactobacillus ferment filtrate and Moth Bean Seed begin the peeling process, which dissolves away excess build up of dead cells and breaks down the peptides (glue) that bond the cells together digesting away keratin proteins, stimulates cell turnover, collagen synthesis and exfoliation. This has low irritation potential to the skin hence it is also ideal for sensitive skins.
This is followed by acid actives of lactic, salicylic and Isodecyl salicylate which weakens desmosomes and loosens skin cohesions, creating a burst of exfoliation and promoting the peeling process in all skin layers. Phytic and glycolic acids help in cellular turnover, inhibit tyrosinase which is responsible for pigmentation, hence lightening the skin; great antioxidants stimulate collagen production and glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) increase natural ceramides, hydrating the skin. The acid is applied at 5-minute intervals for 5 minutes. Clients might feel tingling and warm sensations which is normal because of the exfoliation processes. The last part of the treatment is the De-celerator. Yeast extract and bicarbonate of soda neutralise the skin to a renewal state of calm, hydration and PH balance. A high UV block is a must and it has to be applied daily together with specific hydrating moisturisers. Clients will also have to refrain from heat treatments and heavy sports for the following 72 hours as the skin has just been renewed and is in the regeneration process. Treatments can be done weekly for aging, pigmentation, acne and congestion and every four weeks for sensitive skin. BioSurface Peel Treatments can only be done by trained Dermalogica Professional Skin Therapists and only in the winter months.

Awareness
why
ARE YOU SO SAD?
MARIKA AZZOPARDI LOOKS INTO THE PHENOMENON OF SEASONAL DEPRESSION
In severe cases, a person experiences suicidal thoughts
s
easonal Affective Disorder’s acronym describes the condition accurately – SAD. Someone affected by seasonal affective disorder feels sad to the point of depression. A mood disorder, SAD is mostly associated with a lack of light and therefore associated with the dark days of winter. However, there’s another version of SAD which has a spring onset and is known as summer depression rather than winter depression.
The person who first discovered seasonal affective disorder is Norman E. Rosenthal, a South African psychiatrist who researched mood disorders among other conditions, while studying in the US. Two of his books about mood disorder caused by seasonal changes were issued in quick succession in 1989, with a third book called 'Winter Blues' shooting to fame in 2005. His ground breaking research has helped identify this disorder which he himself experienced through drastic mood changes after moving from South
Africa to the north east of the US and experiencing the sudden change of light levels. He and his research team experimented with the use of light therapy and published a research paper on the subject in 1984. Light therapy is based on the understanding that the light levels outdoors on a sunny day are 5001,000 times brighter than artificial indoor light, and therefore alternatives to outdoor light can help counteract the gloom and doom experienced by people affected by a seasonal lack of light.

Awareness
A&H spoke to Dr. Anton Grech, a leading psychiatrist, senior lecturer in psychiatry at the University of Malta and Senior Research Fellow, BCMHR-Cambridge University. As a psychiatrist do you find that SAD is common in Malta? SAD is quite common in Malta, but it is less common than in Nordic countries. The reason is that in Malta the seasonal changes in intensity and length of daylight are not that drastic. How does SAD manifest and are patients aware of its existence? SAD manifests itself by depressive episodes triggered by the change of seasons, mostly in the beginning of winter. Patients suffer from a combination of the following: low mood, lack of energy, no motivation, very negative thinking, low self esteem, loss of self confidence, inability to experience joy, anxiety, lack of sleep or poor sleep. In severe cases, a person experiences suicidal thoughts. Persons suffering from this condition and those close to them are aware of these changes.
But most do not realize that these are symptoms of depression and think that there is something physically wrong with them or that they are just tired. How is SAD treated and, if left untreated, can it become chronic? The treatment of SAD consists of a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Since there is a strong physiological element in its cause, medication has a very prominent role. It is very important to treat SAD so that it does not become chronic depression. Some people need preventive treatment before the change of season. Who is most affected, by age, social status, and occupation? There is no particular class or profession that is affected more than another. All age groups can be affected equally.
SAD SYMPTOMS Seasonal affective disorder symptoms usually appear when days get short and the weather’s dull, in late autumn and early winter. More rarely, symptoms can occur in spring and summer, rather than in autumn and winter. Initially, symptoms are mild and worsen progressively over the season.
7 WAYS TO MANAGE SAD 1. Take vitamin D, which is typically known as the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D insufficiency affects almost 50% of the population worldwide. An estimated one billion people worldwide, across all ethnicities and age groups, have a vitamin D deficiency (VDD). 2. Increase your intake of Omega-3 since this helps keep your brain well supplied with healthy levels of feel-good neuro-transmitters. 3. Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day, at least five times a week 4. Expose yourself to outdoor light. Sit at a sunny window to read. Cover up and walk outdoors, even if it’s cold. Take a walk in the countryside, do some gardening, hang the washing outdoors to dry. Don’t worry if it’s cloudy. Diffused outdoor cloud light is better than no outdoor light. 5. If you work indoors, try to situate yourself in natural light and surround yourself with warm colours. Remove barriers to natural light, and help diffuse natural light in your workspace by placing mirrors strategically. 6. Make an effort to keep to a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. 7. Eat healthy food, preferably fresh. Avoid fats and sugars and processed meals.

SAD is a sub-category of major depression and shares many of the symptoms such as: • feeling depressed, hopeless or worthless most of the time; • losing interest in activities you normally enjoy; • feeling sluggish and fatigued without having done much; • feeling agitated and unable to concentrate;
• difficulty falling asleep and remaining asleep for a whole night; • changes in weight and appetite. Autumn / winter SAD symptoms also include: • oversleeping; • craving carbohydrates; • unusual weight gain; • feeling tired all the time, and ‘heavy’ limbed; • feeling irritable and unable to get along with others; • feeling extra-sensitive to rejection. Spring / summer SAD symptoms include: • insomnia; • feeling agitated and anxious; • poor appetite and weight loss.
When to see a doctor Feeling down occasionally is normal. It’s part of the experience we call life. Feeling down for days at a time with no obvious cause or explanation is another matter. If you don’t feel able to live normally or motivated to do things you normally enjoy doing, or if your sleep pattern and appetite have changed unusually, it’s time to see a doctor about possible depression, especially if you’re feeling hopeless or thinking about suicide.
Diagnosing seasonal affective disorder Visit your GP if you have the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Effective treatments are available if you’re diagnosed with the condition. Your GP may carry out a psychological assessment to check your mental health. During the assessment, you may be asked questions about: • your mood • your lifestyle • your eating patterns • your sleeping patterns • any seasonal changes in your thoughts and behaviour
• whether there’s anything in your personal history that may contribute to a depressive disorder, such as child abuse • whether there’s anything in your family history that may contribute to a depressive disorder, such as a family history of depression Your GP may also carry out a brief physical examination to check for any other possible causes of your symptoms.

CHRISTMAS NOT EVERYBODY LIKES CHRISTMAS. EVEN THOSE WHO DO, OFTEN FEEL SUPER STRESSED OVER CHRISTMAS AND THE START OF THE NEW YEAR. MARIKA AZZOPARDI ON WAYS TO KEEP CHRISTMAS UNDER CONTROL.
48
December 2014
LIFESTYLE
p
erhaps it is one of the reasons – and a key reason at that – why so many people fall ill around Christmas day and New Year, when we’re all supposed to be enjoying ourselves. The so-called festive season can be stressful. Avoid stress, irritability, tiredness, and the possibility of tension build-up at this time of the year with a few, simple measures.
Take positive action • It’s not too early and not too late to sort out gifts without hassle. Check out the numerous charity shops which are usually not a first port of call where Christmas shopping is involved, but which can offer plenty of fantastic bargains and surprising finds. Some of these shops have diversified into selling books including lots of great titles in pristine or close to pristine quality. You’ll be saving money, surprising yourself with unlikely finds and helping a very good cause. • Keep yourself fit enough to be able to enjoy a few extra calories without feeling guilty. Park your car at a distance and do your Christmas gift shopping on foot. In one fell swoop you will avoid traffic jams, dosome cardio exercise and finalise that extra bit of gift shopping. If you don’t want to strain your arms, back and feet, prepare yourself well. Avoid carrying weighty bags by arming yourself with a wheeled shopper or carrier bag. Avoid wearing high heels and wear comfortable walking shoes or boots. • Organise your events/dinners/entertaining calendar together whether you’re a couple or a family. Sit down and share your booked dates, compromise around them and agree as to which event can and which cannot be changed, averted, or slotted in differently. Families who plan together generally stay together. • Most people will be on leave from work or on school vacation. Grab the opportunity to get everybody together in some fun activities. Involve family or friends in something that will contribute to your general health and mental stimulation. Organise a Christmas treasure hunt, roping in young and old alike and take everybody walking in an interesting location away from the shopping crowds. Think of the options of organising such a treasure hunt around Mdina or in one of The Three Cities. • If the weather is especially fine, grab some healthful food, drinks, fruit and nuts and organise an impromptu picnic on one of our sandy beaches. If you have small children in tow, make sure you take along an extra change of clothes just in case they get wet.
Stand back and destress
Most veterinary casualties at this time of year are dogs and cats fed very heavy, fatty, sugary and spicy food
• If you are enjoying some well earned leave from work, don’t go overboard with your chores or errands. Allot some time for a quick nap in the afternoon, possibly on a daily basis. This will help shore up your energy levels over to last you for late-night entertainment. • Stagger your social events as much as possible so that if you’re not used to late nights, you don’t end up having too many in quick succession. Fatigue can only cause frayed nerves and illhumour during your waking hours. Don’t feel bad about turning down the occasional invitation. After all, there’s only so much one can do. • Instead of drinking more tea or coffee, try a tisane. Choose from leaf, flower, bark, root or fruit/berry tisane varieties, some of which are excellent to detox your body and digestive system. You will find these beverages mildly refreshing and full of goodness. Incidentally, tisanes can be superb gift options for those around you.

• Stick to budgets, know your limits and hide your credit card if necessary. Christmas shopping and entertaining may be fun, but once you’re out of budget, you are bound to stress out. Remember the very valid recommendation that if you can’t afford it, don’t buy it or choose a happy, cheaper alternative. If the latter is unavailable, forget about it until your budget allows it, and if it means doing Christmas without it, then so be it.
Glorious food – a seasonal temptation • Try to minimise your consumption of weighty foods. Start your day with some warm water laced with fresh lemon juice, and avoid eating Christmas cake first thing in the morning. If you must eat cake or pastries, try to do so before late afternoon so that your body will have time to break down and burn the fats. • If you have guests for lunch or dinner, make sure you find out their food preferences and/or intolerances. It is a matter of courtesy to make everybody feel comfortable and to

give every one of your guests the possibility of enjoying his or her meal with peace of mind. Don’t be shy to ask guests some days beforehand because you will need time to plan alternatives. If you’re unsure of what these can be, ask the person concerned. S/he will generally be an expert in making such valid suggestions. • When organising a dinner, make available healthy alternatives to alcohol so that anybody who does not want to drink alcohol or who will be driving back home can join in by enjoying some non-alcoholic beverages. Being a thoughtful host may also include organising a taxi back home for your guests if they are somewhat tipsy. • Avoid giving your family dog or cat any tempting leftovers of heavy food that is meant for human consumption. No matter how hungrily your dog looks up at you as you tuck into your roast, refrain from giving it such food, Instruct children, elderly and guests at your table not to share their food with the family pet. Remember and remind them that most veterinary casualties at this time of year are dogs and cats fed very heavy, fatty, sugary and spicy food.
