Once upon a time... In the aftermath of what has, the world over, become known as ‘Brexit’, and the uncertainty that has come with it, and the fact that some of those I’ve asked for their reaction won’t give it, and also because it doesn’t directly affect everyone (as one person put it: ‘I’m just bored with the whole thing’) – I again ask the question: how can we allow the people ‘at the top’ to gamble with our future and not be held accountable. So in order to make everything seem better again, I always surround myself with beautiful things and courageous and creative people! This issue presents the first of many fashion shoots styled by Natasha Meli – who has a few courageous tales of her own to tell from her colourful life in the fashion world – with the beautiful model Biljana who has been a joy to get to know and watch at work. It is a rare thing to have a model on a shoot getting ‘stuck in’ like the rest of us, and even picking up a broom at the end of the day to help with the clearing up. Amelia Saint George is probably the most resilient woman I know. She is also a spectacular sculptress, depicting outstanding likenesses of animals in bronze – usually Maltese creatures, both big and small, which I never knew existed, such as the Maltese bull – which has very different characteristics to any other bull in the world: something Amelia would know all about through her diligent studying. Then there’s the pleasure of dreaming of being somewhere far, far away. Dini Martinez has the answer of where: South-east Asia has it all. She writes about five idyllic destination ideas to think about visiting, depending on what takes your fancy. Summer calls for an easy, no heat-in-the-kitchen recipe agenda. Mint café from Sliema gives us two recipes to try cooking at home during the hot weather – or, if you don’t feel like cooking, simply trying at their café! Grahame Salt is enjoying his new offices in Sliema, whilst revving up to mean ‘business’. Coryse Borg meets him there to catch up with his game plan. Who knows what the new towers in Sliema will bring to his business – and the whole property game, and even the surrounding residents – so take a deep breath, it seems it’s not for us to decide, or even to try to predict! We managed to catch a moment with the talented and graceful Nicola Said, before she is no doubt whisked away to sing around the world and her life becomes too busy with her success as a soprano. Maltese talent, and talent in Malta, never ceases to amaze me – we can be proud!

THE MALTA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE & GARDEN PARTY

Toby and Sophie Ross realised a dream on 7 June when they organised the inaugural Concours d’Elegance & Garden Party in the fabulous gardens of the Italianesque Villa Bologna. Disillusioned with both competitors and visitors making no effort to dress up for events, the number one rule was ‘elegance’. Photographs by Samuel Rondot.

T

he judging of the cars was very simple: 50 points for the car and 50 points for the elegance of the couple presenting it. Dressing in the style of the era of the automobile was very much encouraged, and competitors were informed that if they did not dress correctly, they would not be allowed into the VIP area. Forty of the island’s finest automobiles were invited, strategically placed throughout the gardens. The elegant participants and visitors socialised in groups, admiring the cars, and themselves, while sipping a ginand-tonic or a glass of prosecco. The result was an event that could have come from a bygone era. There was live jazz throughout the day

14

and MrGreen, the main sponsor, supplied a couple of blackjack tables and a roulette wheel, allowing people to get an extra thrill without money changing hands. There was even a prize for the best-dressed couple from the visitors. The fabulous event was marred only by the weather, which turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far, with the temperature in the mid-thirties and members of the public generally preferring to go to the beach. The conclusion was that, next time, the event would be held in the evening, which will only add to the magic. If anyone is interested in taking part next year, the organisers intend to arrange transport for fine cars from the UK and mainland Europe. They can be contacted through the website MaltaConcours.com

DEFINED FASHION Line Young Peteri, a 39-year-old Danish investment advisor at Kickass.Capital and co-owner of roccamore.com – is a passionate lover of bags and shoes. Over the next 12 months, Line will share with us her 12 favourite designers and brands that can be found in her wardrobe.

CHANEL THE WOMAN WHO

G

abrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was the designer and founder of the Chanel brand, in the post WWI era and at the time of her death in 1971, her fortune stood at $19 billion (equivalent to $118 billion in 2015), making her one of the richest women of all time. At a time when woman were still dependent on men, Coco Chanel used her charm, skills and business mind to create new and iconic pieces that are still – many years later – considered to be some of the best and most sophisticated designs ever made. She was proactive and daring, and for the elite she was excitingly and scandalously refreshing. She came with red lips and tanned skin at a time when women were pale, and generally only prostitutes wore obvious make up. Some of her most iconic pieces are the Chanel suit, which still cost on the upwards of €2,000 and the Camellia flower, which was used as decoration on a suit in the 1930s, but is still used today on jewellery and decorates the boxes and bags when you buy something from Chanel. But perhaps the most famous and iconic of them all is the 2.55 Chanel bag, which made its first appearance in February, 1955 – hence the name ‘2.55’ – and which she designed as she was tired of not having a bag she could use and still have her hands free. This is precisely why I love Chanel. Apart from the exquisite quality of her work, Chanel represents an independence which, at the time, was very rare for a woman. For me, she is a little piece of history and, funnily enough, has become the inspiration for many male designers. The iconic Chanel bags increase in value every year: purchasing something by Chanel is like buying a piece of art. Chanel represents timelessness and sophistication and whether you are wearing torn jeans or an elegant evening dress, if you are carrying a Chanel bag, wearing Chanel shoes or a piece of Chanel jewellery, you will pass muster. And every time I wear Chanel, I think of one of the most inspiring women who ever lived, who made fashion statements for woman at a time when they were dominated by men. CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUNGLASSES

Most of us enjoy popping on our favourite pair of sunglasses before stepping outside. However, there’s more to choosing the right pair than how they look, for a lot of reasons. Managing Dispensing Optician from O’Hea Opticians, Celia Melillo, explains.

T

he sun gives off UV radiation that you cannot see or feel. In small doses you might feel beneficial in boosting Vitamin D in our body, however too much of it can cause problems and may also damage your eyes. Too much UV light can cause cataracts, it can also destroy the retina, the lining at the back of your eyes that helps you see clearly. It can even cause tissue to grow over your eyeball. On a fashionable note, sunglasses have become the ultimate fashion accessory. They make a chic fashion statement whilst being beneficial for your health. Selecting the right pair for yourself can be complex due to the ever increasing number of designer brands producing them. Luxury brands such as Gucci, Miu Miu, Jimmy Choo, Christian Dior and the more casual brands like Carrera, Adidas and RayBan are just a few of the fashion houses offering a broad array of lens and frame materials. The lenses come in different forms with various technical advantages. This year the collections are immense. The designers have really succeeded in producing some lovely shapes using an array of colours to suit all... glamorous upswept silhouettes, animal prints, marble effect finishes, tortoiseshell, the round pantos and the retro models. To mention a few of this year’s collections: the Christian Dior unique Split model and the Dolce & Gabbana Carretto collection are a must this summer. Choosing a pair of sunglasses is not a daunting job but a lovely shopping experience if you choose the right outlet with dedicated and well informed sales people. This summer make sure you pick a pair of good quality sunglasses not only for yourself but for the children in your life too. Protect your eyes, with style!

SOUTHEAST ASIA FIVE TOP PLACES TO VISIT

T

...where you can naturally relax. Written by Dini Martinez.

he Philippines is one of the world’s largest island groups, with 7,107 islands that host some of the world’s top, wonderfully pristine, sandy white beaches where you can slip into laidback island time and truly unwind and relax. A more undiscovered travel destination than most of its neighbours, the Philippines might be the Southeast Asian country where you’ll get most value for your money. Some places haven’t changed much since before the Spanish colonisation in 1565, merging into a complete and serene jungle scene

bursting with wildlife, walks and waterfalls. Turquoise crystal-clear waters are filled with over 400 species of coral and an incredible abundance of sea creatures and the average annual temperature is a pleasant 26.6°C. If you need some help to unwind, pampering massages are widely available. Massage ladies – from on the beach to luxury spas and shopping centres in the bigger towns – will only cost a fraction of their price back home. In general, the people are welcoming, friendly and curious, and English is widely spoken. In summary, if you

simply want to find your dream beach and relax without further complications, then the Philippines is your place.

...to yoga on-end Bali is often nicknamed the ‘Island of Peace’ and probably has the world’s highest ratio of yoga retreat centres per inhabitant. A combination of stunning and diverse scenery, traditional Hindu culture and welcoming and friendly people, Bali really is the perfect location for the ultimate, soul-soothing, backbending – maybe even life-changing – yoga vacation. »

«Most retreat centres are scattered in and around Ubud – Bali’s cultural heart, renowned for its highly developed arts and music. A few others can be found along the slopes of Mount Batur, Bali’s most active volcano, across the lush green rice paddies or near the endless black and white sandy beaches. Styles vary from basic eco-lodges to luxurious, allinclusive resorts. The island home of Indonesia’s Hindu minority is also known for its

exceptional coral reefs, which make snorkelling, surfing and diving a fantastic pass-time between unforgettable yoga classes, soothing spas and healing meditation indulgences in ancient temples. Around 8º south of the Equator, Bali’s tropical climate and volcanic nature have contributed to its exceptional fertility – so delicious, home-grown organic produce promises to accompany your yoga practice and guarantee your “Om” to sound clearer than ever!»

Above Mount Batur, Bali Below: Vietnam « ...to explore more off the beaten track Cambodia sits at the heart of the Indochina Peninsula and, as probably its least ‘tourist-y’ country, is all the more interesting to explore. For the curious, more adventurous traveller it has a lot to offer, including the Cardamom Mountains for jungle trekking and waterfalls; Southeast Asia’s largest mangrove forest; the glittering Royal Palace, National Museum and Toul Sleng Museum in the busy capital of Phnom Penh; affordable off-the-beaten-track motorcycle tours through the Mekong Delta or Cambodia’s low-lying plains; untouched rivers and islands and, of course, the famous temple ruins of Angkor Wat. This massive stone temple complex sits in a UNESCO-protected archaeological park. Built during the Khmer Empire period, it has been the subject of much speculation as to how this empire developed, dominated the region and then declined in around the 15th century. Very recent, groundbreaking archaeological discoveries have revealed multiple, previously undocumented mediaeval towns not far from the ancient temple city. These feature an array of elaborate water systems that were built hundreds of years before the time that historians believed the technology existed. This sophisticated network of towns seems to have formed the largest empire on earth in the 12th century and might 36

...to party until the sun rises To be fair, Thailand has a lot more to offer than partying: tropical beaches, world-class diving, lush jungles, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins, ornate temples and Buddha figures, amazing food, cheap prices and superb ease of travel. Having said that, if you are out to party – it won’t disappoint either! Bangkok will welcome you with anything from local karaoke bars to all-night clubs. Styles range from backpacker hang-outs all the way to top fancy expat luxurious bars with live music, star-light dance-floors and a cocktail menu longer than the Khao San Road. The latter makes a simple stroll through its hip and hippy nightmarkets seem like a party all on its own. The pinnacle of all parties is unquestionably Koh Phangan’s worldfamous, all-night Full Moon Party. It’s touristy, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a lot of fun! If sharing a beach with several DJs plus over 20,000 partypeople sounds a bit too much, don’t worry: practically every island counts with its very own fabulous beach bars to keep you entertained on any night of the year for as long as your party legs can carry you. To name but a few, there’s sexy Koh Phi Phi, nightlife central Phuket, Ko Samet with its

breath-taking fire shows and, of course, ‘Songkran’ in April – when the whole country turns into a hilarious water fight to celebrate the Thai New Year.

...to eat with all the senses Vietnam’s culinary forte lies in combining the crunchy freshness of Asia with the indulgent sweetness of traditional French cuisine. The food is not fancy or expensive, but is rich in flavour – thanks to simple, fresh ingredients and adherence to the yinyang principle. Worldwide, Vietnamese cooking is considered one

Koh Phangan’s world-famous, all-night Full Moon Party

of the healthiest, with minimal use of dairy and oil and a strong reliance on fresh herbs and vegetables. Typical Vietnamese delicacies include nourishing soups, an impressive variety of Vietnamese pastries, crunchy spring rolls, fermented fish, pickled vegetables and not to forget the signature fusion dish: ‘Vietnamese baguette’. Cooking and eating play an extremely important role in Vietnamese culture. Traditionally, specific foods are used to greet the Lunar New Year; remind new couples of perfection and harmony at

their wedding; and offered at ancestral altars. As a visitor, you can explore everything from busy food-stands in local markets to more elaborate restaurants, varying in style and menu throughout the different regions. If you’ve gone over-the-top in your culinary explorations, you can rest in one of the many spas. Then pick yourself up with a uniquely Vietnamese coffee served on ice and sweetened condensed milk to get some energy and discover more of this welcoming, diverse and easy-to-travel country by the South China Sea.

A GHANA

DIARY A group of six HSBC Malta employees have brought back with them, from a week-long trip in Ghana, the remarkable tales of remote areas lacking basic amenities such as water and the resilience of the people who face living with such challenges. Astrid Micallef Saliba shares the team’s diary. Photographs by WaterAid.

DAY 1

Kawula (Hello)

We started the journey this morning at 5.45am, followed by a two hour bumpy and dusty drive. Finally, we reached Salaga Senior High School, in the East Gonja district. After a short introductory meeting with the Headmaster, we entered the school hall with more than 2,000 students, all dressed in bright pink uniforms. A full programme was prepared by the school and its students, including traditional dances, speeches by dignitaries, and drama performances on water, sanitation and hygiene. After this warm welcome, WaterAid Ghana took us around the school grounds. We were shown the biogas system, toilet blocks and the rainwater harvesting tanks – technologies that WaterAid has implemented under this project. We ended our day by interviewing members of the school’s Health Club, made up of over 100 students. The impact this project has had on the students’ lives made us feel immensely proud.

DAY 2

Asankushund (Thank you)

Today it was another early start, leaving at 5.45am to hit the road for our second day with the school. Before the WaterAid project, students had to travel an 8km round trip to fetch dirty water. This morning we experienced this journey first-hand. The heat was 38

already unbearable at 8.30am. It took us just under an hour to reach the Kpembi dam. When we arrived, we tried to lift a jerry can filled with water (weighing approx. 20kg). We could hardly lift it from the ground, never mind carry it all the way back to the school. Afterwards, we returned to the school where we interviewed the teachers and Headmaster. The teachers also praised the project. They told us that since the wash facilities were installed, they’ve added an additional lesson into the school day, as students have more energy to focus more on their studies. In the afternoon we painted a large mural on one of the exterior walls of the school with the assistance of the students, representing life. Equipped with paints and brushes, we set about painting the branches whilst students made handprints representing the leaves. We ended our day by singing a Maltese song, accompanied by a spontaneous chorus from the students. As we left the students told us, “Asankushund Malta!”»

DAY 3

Together we can make things happen In the morning we visited Kulnyevula, a community where WaterAid has worked since 2012 through the HSBC Water Programme. We visited the new water kiosk and could see the difference that the project is making. We also saw a number of household latrines that were spotlessly clean. It was wonderful to see the clear difference that the project is making to people’s lives. Before leaving this community we visited the Chief and he thanked WaterAid and HSBC. He said: “One man alone in the world cannot achieve but together we can make things happen.” In the afternoon we visited another community, Kakpayili-Shizugu, where WaterAid has recently started work. Meeting this community was an emotional experience. The committee chairman invited us to visit the dam, approximately 1km away, where they currently collect water. When we got there, the water was filthy and full of insects. Cows and dogs were drinking the same water. It was shocking to know that people have no choice but to drink this. After that, families were kind enough to open their doors and invite us into their homes. The community members showed us the household latrines they are building, and we visited the water kiosk which is under construction. The kiosk is due to be completed soon and will undoubtedly transform people’s lives. As we reflect on an emotional day, we remembered the words of the Chief – together we can make things happen.

More information about the project: The HSBC Malta staff trip was part of the five-year HSBC Water Programme. Although with a coastline embracing the Atlantic Ocean, Ghana’s northern region jets further inland into African arid lands and is one of the most water-scarce areas on the continent. 40

ONE MAN ALONE IN THE WORLD CANNOT ACHIEVE BUT TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE THINGS HAPPEN The HSBC Malta group first travelled to the Salaga Senior High School and was captivated by the world of difference that new installations have made in the lives of the students and teachers. They were excited to see that the school of more than 2,000 students now has access to a solar powered mechanised water pump, a biogas system, new toilet blocks and rainwater harvesting tanks. These facilities were installed after HSBC employees in Malta collected €33,000 through various staff fundraising activities held in the past 2 years, and HSBC Malta matched this sum to reach the total project cost of €66,000. The group then travelled to Kpembi Dam, which was the only source of water for the students before the WaterAid project was implemented at their school. A roundtrip between the Salaga High School and the Kpembi Dam was approximately eight kilometres. The students used to do this trip a couple of times a day to carry water to their school. “When we arrived at the Dam, we tried to lift a jerry can filled with water, weighing approximately 20kg, and could barely lift it from the ground let alone carry it all the way back to the school,” said Astrid Micallef Saliba, one of the HSBC Malta group.

The group also visited Kulnyevula community which has been supported by WaterAid through the HSBC Water Programme since 2012. They visited the community’s new water kiosk and could visibly see the transformative effect that access to safe water has had on the community. Here, the group met the water vendor who manages the water kiosk, as well as some of the women who were collecting their water. The community spoke of their pride and happiness at having clean water and how as a result illness has dramatically decreased. Finally the group visited Kakpayili-Shizugu community, where the group was shocked to learn that the community were forced to drink water from a nearby polluted dam. The water was full of insects and was the same water source used by cows and dogs. A water kiosk supplying the community with safe drinking water is being implemented as part of the HSBC Water Programme and soon the community will have access to safe water for the first time. Meeting the people of these communities capped the experience for the HSBC Malta group. The group was led by Astrid Micallef Saliba, and included Trudy Vella Gera, Daniel Grech Avellino, Jean Paul Attard, Amanda Azzopardi, and Janika Agius. The HSBC Water Programme is a five year, US$100m partnership with Earthwatch, WaterAid and WWF, three NGOs that rank amongst the world’s most respected environmental and sustainable development organisations. The programme also funds charities managing local water projects proposed by HSBC employees. These partnerships provide the necessary scale to deliver the powerful combination of water provision, protection and education; benefiting communities in need, enabling people to prosper, and driving economic development and growth.

NEW BEGINNINGS Homes of Quality, which forms part of the Frank Salt Real Estate Group, recently went through a beautifying facelift when it moved to its new prestigious premises on the Sliema seafront. Coryse Borg has a chat with director Grahame Salt to hear about new developments and the way forward for this real-estate company which offers some of the best-quality properties on the market for sale.

W

THE VAST HOMES OF QUALITY DATABASE IS “EVERYTHING”, ACCORDING TO MR SALT. HE SAYS THAT HALF THEIR JOB IS KEEPING THE DATABASE UPDATED SO THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO OFFER THEIR CLIENTS THE IDEAL PROPERTY FOR THEM AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON WHICH IS, OF COURSE, ESPECIALLY USEFUL IF THE CLIENT IS FROM OVERSEAS AND IN MALTA FOR ONLY A FEW DAYS.

alking into the new Homes of Quality Sliema seafront premises, I am immediately struck by how light and airy the place is. High ceilings and a predominance of white means that it conveys an impression of sophisticated class, while still remaining welcoming and hospitable. I am taken on a quick tour of the premises and it certainly seems like an ideal place to which to invite clients in and also to work – in fact one of the real estate agents jokes that he likes the place so much, he’d be happy to move in permanently. I meet Mr Salt in his large, modern, clean-cut office. The entire façade of the room is made of glass, affording him a fantastic view of Tower Road, the trees swaying in the light breeze and the sea – peaceful and calm today. “We moved in just over a month ago and we’re practically ready, except for some last-minute additions such as a light fitting and paintings and signage to be put up. And we need to put up the displays advertising our properties on the glass wall in my office so I can stop feeling like I am on display,” he laughs. There will also be a large LCD screen in the lounge area with access to the company’s internet site to enable clients to browse properties as they wait. “The idea is to do away with the idea of clients sitting around a negotiator’s desk and instead enable them to talk freely in a comfortable, private and quiet space – and the lounge area or the board room will fulfil this requisite, says Mr Salt. “At Homes of Quality, while we deal with all segments of the market, we target high-end properties. The kind of client we tend to attract feels more comfortable in this type of premises, where we are able to treat them with some discretion.” Homes of Quality only has four consultants and Mr Salt tells me that he regularly reviews and updates all the necessary rules and laws with them. “They need to be up-to-date. Clients want to be with somebody who can answer all their questions. Our consultants are not just selling the property – although they have to know exactly what they are selling, plus the rules and regulations and so on. I always say that concluding a sale has to be like wrapping a parcel, with neat wrapping and a ribbon. Our consultants are trained to understand exactly what the client wants and they know the properties inside out so they don't waste people’s time,” he explains. The ethos of Homes of Quality can be summed up as making the buying and selling experience a pleasant and exceptional one for their clients. “So far, we’re doing very well,” Mr Salt says with a smile. “We focus on properties as well as on the buyers. Each month we choose certain properties and ‘push’ them on Air Malta’s in-flight magazine, flyers, our newsletter and so on. They are usually

50

properties we feel are top notch – good, saleable properties. The vast Homes of Quality database is “everything”, according to Mr Salt. He says that half their job is keeping the database updated so that they are able to offer their clients the ideal property for them at the touch of a button which is, of course, especially useful if the client is from overseas and in Malta for only a few days. Of course, having worked in the property business for so long, Mr Salt has an ‘eye’ for those properties which will sell – and sell well. Every week, he goes through the Frank Salt properties and chooses those which are in good locations, correctly priced and suitable for the Homes of Quality website. Some exceptional properties will also get a flyer or brochure of their very own. Mr Salt says that there are plenty of buyers for luxury properties in Malta – and are practically split down the middle between locals and foreigners. “The Maltese are very savvy property buyers,” he says “and they have a lot of faith in the real estate market. Of course, we have a lot of foreign investors as well. We hold seminars abroad, targeting wealthy clients who are interested in investing or residing in Malta. We also work with agents in South Africa and the UK.” New developments in Malta, with its limited space, are always going to be a hot topic. What does Mr Salt think about the new developments being proposed in and around Sliema? “The new developments coming up will attract a lot of wealthy buyers,” he says. “There is such a big demand for luxury properties such as those being proposed – in fact, there is an under supply. Nowadays, properties – whole blocks – in Sliema sell within days. It’s prime real estate. “These developments will set a new standard as they are bringing in big names in engineering and architecture. What is important is that, concurrent with the creation of these developments, the infrastructure needs to be upgraded. Traffic measures need to be put into place. Hopefully the government will understand this.” So what’s next on the agenda for Homes of Quality? “We have good estate agents who take care of their clients,” Mr Salt smiles proudly. “A big chunk of our sales come from people who recommend clients to us because they know we will look after them properly. They feel that they were really well looked after. Basically, we want to keep on guaranteeing a good service to our clients so they come back – and also give good referrals.” More information on Homes of Quality may be found on their website www.homesofquality.com.mt

H

A STAR IS BORN i Anastasia, please tell us a little about yourself.

Hi, I was born in Russia, but I moved to Germany when I was a teenager. I had one main focus when I finished university: to move abroad and work for an interesting company, doing a job that I have a passion for.

How long have you been with Tipico?

I started in January last year as a marketing analyst. I immediately fell in love with the work and the insight that it gave me into people’s minds. I studied psychology, so the world of gambling is very interesting to me.

Tell us more about your responsibilities and your department’s structure.

Tipico marketing analyst Anastasia Muljajew won the gold award in the Star of the Future category at the seventh Women in Gaming Awards in London in May. Her colleague Claudia Wegner, director of the Legal & Compliance Department, was nominated in the Inspiration of the Year category, while Adriana Rocha, lead business analyst, was nominated for iGaming Leader of the Year. First discussed the female perspective with Anastasia on her return to Tipico’s headquarters at Portomaso Tower.

Overall, I am responsible for research that is carried out with Tipico’s customers. I also coordinate with external research companies. My colleagues come to me if they want answers to specific questions, or if we need to track changes in the market that may influence our business. Research can be anything from band awareness and campaign effectiveness to customer satisfaction, to name just a few. I handle the design, wording and distribution of questionnaires which we send to our customers. My position allows me to ask real people questions about their motivation, habits, preferences and satisfaction with Tipico. It’s really interesting to study consumer research and analyse answers that are personal, relevant, real and emotional. From the information received, I calculate statistics, decide if the results are significant and distribute my findings throughout the company. Being the link between customers and the decision-makers in Tipico allows me to discover and weigh the opinion of both sides.

What was the trip to London for the Women in Gaming Awards like?

The whole trip was a huge, positive surprise! Travelling with colleagues, who also become friends, is always great fun. We had a great day in London, exploring and enjoying the many sights, followed by the ceremony itself. Everyone looked fantastic, wearing their best, most glamorous clothes… beautiful dresses, high heels, smart tuxedoes and so many talented and beautiful women in one place! The ceremony was held at the extremely luxurious Jumeriah Hotel. The Star of the Future, for which I was nominated, was one of the last awards announced. There were so many fantastic women who were nominated in this category, that when my name was called I was totally shocked! I thought: “Me? Award? Am I dreaming?” I got so emotional on stage, that I just could not express myself!

What’s it like working at Tipico, from the female perspective? Funnily enough, shortly after I started working in the

marketing office I became the only woman in the department for a while. Luckily it didn’t stay this way for long and the company even hired a female director of marketing. Now there are five women in the department, and working with them makes me realise how far the department has come. I see how much more we work as a team, communicating and analysing, but also socialising and exchanging ideas through chatting to each other and exchanging ideas. Some of my female colleagues, who are also mothers, have patience, creativity and great management skills, which enrich the life of our department considerably.

How much of Tipico’s success do you attribute to female participation in its workforce? Well, at least half! No team can be built without team spirit, communication, analysis, patience, creativity, management, care and a little love for each other, and no company can survive without great teams, which nurture its success.

How did you feel about winning this award? I was surprised to be nominated in the first place, but when my name was called, I was obviously very happy. However, this award belongs to the entire department, in which I have the pleasure to work side by side with some wonderful women. Adriana, Claudia and many more fantastic colleagues at Tipico could so easily, and deservedly, have won this award.

How important are awards such as the one you have won and how has this one inspired you? I am not sure their overall importance has completely sunk in just yet. The only thing I can say for sure is that it has been an important part of my personal development. It was one of those glorious moments when you realise you are on the right path in life. So I have been inspired and now I want to reach even higher goals. Let’s begin! Find out more about working for Tipico at www.tipicocareers.com

FUNNILY ENOUGH, SHORTLY AFTER I STARTED WORKING IN THE MARKETING OFFICE I BECAME THE ONLY WOMAN IN THE DEPARTMENT FOR A WHILE. LUCKILY IT DIDN’T STAY THIS WAY FOR LONG AND THE COMPANY EVEN HIRED A FEMALE DIRECTOR OF MARKETING. NOW THERE ARE FIVE WOMEN IN THE DEPARTMENT, AND WORKING WITH THEM MAKES ME REALISE HOW FAR THE DEPARTMENT HAS COME 53

Organic waste is so far collected in 9 localities, including the largest Birkirkara and the smallest Mdina

MAKING GOOD USE OF

Organic waste Gozo households will join the organic waste separation pilot project. The project’s extension was made public this week by Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change, Dr José Herrera, who announced that as from Friday 30th September, separated household organic waste will also be collected in all Gozo localities.

L

imiting the amount of waste that ends up in landfills is an important environmental target for all countries, even more so for small island states and especially Malta, where land scarcity is unfortunately a harsh reality. The recently announced extension of the organic waste collection project, the second extension since this pilot project was introduced in Malta last October, aims to do just that. By separating organic waste at household level, families in participating localities can actively help to reduce the amount of waste that is landfilled. What’s more, this waste is instead used at Wasteserv facilities to produce renewable energy. Gozo as a region will join the 9 localities of Birkirkara, Bormla, Għaxaq, Kirkop, Marsaxlokk, Mdina, Mġarr, Swieqi and Ta’ Xbiex, who have been successfully implementing this project for several months. So far, an impressive 1,151 tonnes of separated organic waste have been collected throughout this project. The expansion to Gozo fits in perfectly with the Eco Gozo vision and also complements recent efforts by Wasteserv to modernise the waste management sector on the sister island. Last December a new Wasteserv facility was inaugurated in Xewkija, a much needed infrastructural boost which has replaced the open-air waste operations previously carried out in Qortin. In fact, Gozo’s household waste is now being directed to the new Xewkija facility where recyclable waste is sorted into different materials and baled on site, while black bag waste is compacted and sealed in closed containers through special equipment at the facility. The sealed containers are then transferred to Malta for further treatment at the Malta North Facility, representing a far more economical and sustainable system than open-truck transport, thanks to less trips needed, less carbon emissions and less odours.

54

Wasteserv representatives during door to door visits last summer

WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT THE PROJECT WILL ALSO BE SUCCESSFUL IN GOZO AND WE WELCOME ANY FEEDBACK FROM RESIDENTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE SYSTEM FURTHER

Ahead of the first organic collection in September, all households in Gozo will be provided with a useful starter kit consisting of a ventilated kitchen bin and a pack of white compostable bags for the collection of organic waste. These will be distributed to all households in Gozo free of charge. Residents will also be given informative material on what organic waste is, the collection schedule in their locality and practical tips on organic waste separation. An intensive educational campaign will also be carried out over the summer months. Wasteserv representatives will be going door to door visiting all families in Gozo so as to explain the new collection system and answer any questions that residents may have, not only about the organic project but also about recycling and all waste related matters. Door to door visits in Gozo will commence on the 11th July, while educational efforts will be given another boost through a campaign across all Gozitan schools which is scheduled to start at the beginning of the coming scholastic year. Once the collection phase kicks off on the 30th of September, a monitoring exercise will commence immediately consisting of intensive street monitoring and waste monitoring at Wasteserv facilities. Wasteserv CEO, Mr Tonio Montebello said, “In the 9 localities participating to date, such monitoring proved to be not only an effective tool to track the project’s performance but also helped to tackle any difficulties being encountered by residents, local councils and waste collectors alike. We are confident that the project will also be successful in Gozo and we welcome any feedback from residents on how to improve the system further.” For more information visit www.wasteservmalta.com/organic or contact Wasteserv on Freephone 8007 2200, info.ws@wasteservmalta.com, facebook.com/Wasteserv or twitter.com/Wasteserv.

DEALING WITH A DILEMMA

Dear Claire

My girlfriend of four years has been offered an excellent job opportunity in New York. I am still studying so will not be able to join her before two years’ time. While I understand that it is a prospect she should not miss, I am worried as to how this will effect our relationship.

A

dvances in technology, faster communications and cheaper air travel have considerably changed the nature of long distance relationships. In spite of such developments, these relationships still have their challenges. Indeed, nowadays some people actually resort to the internet to broaden their search for an ideal soulmate beyond our shores, and spend months communicating virtually before meeting in person. So it really all depends on individual preference as well as character. 56

In your case, in four years you should have nurtured a strong enough bond to withstand long periods of detachment. I understand your concern: you will obviously miss each other, but this could actually be a great test for your relationship. And as in most things, being away from the one you love is less than ideal, however if managed well, and above all if there is the will to maintain this relationship, it can actually help you grow stronger as individuals as well as a couple. The secret lies in being mature and committed. This experience may well teach you that the connection and feelings that you have for each other transcend proximity. Such a relationship will also give you the opportunity to objectively assess your feelings. Before departing, take time to discuss your respective goals

and expectations, so as to avoid heartache and wasting time. Once away from each other, schedule specific times during the week in which you could skype or call. During the day send a quick email or text message to let each other know that they are being thought of. You can also feel closer by doing things together. This could include watching the same movie or reading the same book together, discussing your impressions as you go along. Time permitting you could even play your favourite board or game online. People on secondment or working away from their homeland are very often given specific allowances to travel back home once or twice a year. Diarise these meetings and if at all possible, bridge the gap by

visiting yourself in between. When you do meet, allow each other into your new worlds of friendships and habits so that you can understand each other better when away. Also make sure your meetings are romantic and extra special so as to reassure your partner of your total dedication and that the spark between you is very much alive. Plan your reunions jointly and make sure they are super special for both. Above all flirt and ignite desire for each other even when you are apart. This you could do through your choice of words, through sharing your wishes and fantasies as well as through your clothing when skyping. A relationship is such whether near or far and it is important to speak up early in case of misunderstandings or disagreements. Do not let distance inhibit you from asserting yourself and your ideas. There may be a tendency to avoid confrontation and just concentrate on the beautiful in such circumstances. But if you want a strong lasting relationship where one of you will eventually move and join the other, thoughts, feelings and expectations from both ends must be clear. During the time you are apart, do not purely obsess about each other but cultivate your friendships as well as your life. Concentrate on your studies and on creating a successful future for yourself as an independent being. Life goes on and it is not possible to put everything else on hold. Besides, feeling confident and happy as an individual will translate

THERE MAY BE A TENDENCY TO AVOID CONFRONTATION AND JUST CONCENTRATE ON THE BEAUTIFUL IN SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES into you being less dependent and strong whatever the outcome. So nurture other friendships and identify an objective family member or close friend with whom you can open up in times of anxiety and distress. For a long distance relationship to work, there must be a strong element of trust. One cannot go berserk for every missed call or postponed skype call, since let’s face it: if someone wants to cheat, he/she can do so even if living close. What is important is as already

mentioned to discuss your difficulties and any perplexities, and to speak up in case of discontent. As the saying goes: If you love someone set them free. In your case, despite your concerns it would be selfish of you to try to talk your girlfriend into refusing such a great opportunity. If you are soulmates and manage it maturely and skillfully it will be a positive phase in your lives, and an opportunity for you to grow as individuals as well as a couple. 57

‘I WAS BORN TO

SING’

From striking conversations with strangers in Airbnbs to lying in the sun to unwind, young soprano Nicola Said gives First magazine a peek into her life and her wildly varied musical tastes – they include Britney Spears and Pink Floyd – ahead of her performance with tenor Joseph Calleja later this month.

D

id you always know you wanted to sing for a living?

Before I left Malta, at the age of 18, the thought of a career in singing seemed a far-off dream, but studying abroad made me aware of the opportunities that exist in the world of opera and performance. You need to know where to look for these opportunities, and work hard to seize them, of course.

You’ve sung alongside Joseph Calleja in his Christmas concerts before. How does it feel to be singing alongside such operatic giants? Sharing the stage with one of the world’s top tenors is, first and foremost, a privilege. It is also an exhilarating experience and the best reward for the hours of hard work put into such performances.

What has been your most memorable performance to date?

Singing Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos is a role I hold very dear because it marked my professional debut and challenged me to explore the full potential of my voice. On top of this, I found Zerbinetta’s complex character very alluring, which made it easier to fall in love with the part and learn the long German words in which it is written!

Who’s your operatic idol? Apart from Joseph Calleja, I love Anna Netrebko because she puts all her heart and soul into her exquisite performances. I had the pleasure of watching Calleja and Netrebko perform in La Bohème together last year – a truly memorable experience.

What would be the ultimate dream-come-true in your career?

Singing Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor with Joseph Calleja would be nothing short of perfect as it would combine my dream role with singing alongside my favourite tenor.

The road to success means notching up air miles and living in hotel rooms. It all sounds very glamorous, but does it also get lonely at times? I love travelling and using Airbnb means that I don’t have to spend my time completely alone in a

sponsors of a prestigious event organised by the Malta Community Chest Fund that features a performance by The Austrian Youth Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Dr Michael Lessky and at which I will also be singing. Cultural plans apart, the Foundation is currently busy with the last preparations before the launch of a documentary that will give the public a glimpse of the underwater world surrounding Filfla. Later in the year, the Foundation will also be reopening to the public the restored Torri Xutu in Wied iż-Żurrieq, the first restoration project it undertook.

How do you unwind and de-stress? My trick is yoga and lying in the sun in a park or on a beach.

What are your three best things in life? Love, food and sun!

new city. But being alone is not always a bad thing, as sometimes I find myself striking up interesting conversations with fascinating strangers. However, living out of a suitcase, in different parts of the world is not always particularly glamorous.

What pushes you to keep going? The deep need and desire to fulfil what I believe I was born to do, coupled with the unceasing support of my family, friends and, more recently, the Malta Airport Foundation.

Last year you were entrusted by the Malta Airport Foundation to be its cultural ambassador. What does this responsibility mean to you? This role gives me the opportunity to be part of something that is bigger than what I am trying to achieve in opera. As the Foundation’s ambassador, I am also representing Malta. The Malta Airport Foundation has been doing an exceptional job in enhancing the Island’s tourism product by investing in its heritage and environment. It is a privilege to be able to use my frequent travelling to help the Foundation spread the word about Malta’s unique charm all over the world.

What are the foundation’s upcoming cultural plans? The Malta Airport Foundation is one of the

What kind of music do you listen to when you unwind? That really depends on my mood. I love going down memory lane to my teenage years with Britney Spears, the Spice Girls, the Backstreet Boys and Celine Dion. Influenced by my father’s tastes in music, I also like groups such as Pink Floyd and Queen and sometimes spend hours singing along to their songs.

What is the one song that invokes summer for you?

We are Young by Fun, as it reminds me of a sunny day in California when my friend and I turned this song up and sang along to it at the top of our voices! Nicola studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach and the Ian Tomlin School of Music at Napier University, Edinburgh. In the last 12 months, Nicola has given 18 performances in five different operas in London and Budapest, and in various concerts in Malta. Nicola Said will sing alongside tenor Joseph Calleja in his summer concert on 28 July. THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY PARTY The British High Commissioner Rob Luke and his wife Louise recently hosted the Queen’s Birthday Party at their Residence in San Pawl tat-Targa. This year’s event was a special celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. In their speeches, President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and Mr Luke described the past 12 months as a particularly active phase in the excellent relationship between Malta and the UK. The highlight was the State Visit by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh at the time of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November 2015, also attended by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. The UK and Malta continue to work closely together – bilaterally and as European and Commonwealth partners – to respond to key global challenges. Photos by Austin Tufigno
