S

ephora and Joseph Borg have known each other since they were 16. They grew together experiencing Junior College, University life and then the real world of work as a couple. After seven years of dating, they bought a house together and Joseph proposed. In December 2013, Joseph planned a road trip to the North of Italy with their close friends. They drove all the way from Lago Di Garda, to Bormio, Livignio, Verona and Venice. After a six-hour drive and a round of drinks at a quaint bar in Bormio, Joseph dropped down on one knee and asked the question. Sephora happily accepted. Emotions ran very high that evening as Joseph almost choked on some nibbles and was

16 I DO

lost for words. They tied the knot exactly two years later, on the twelfth night of December. The church was an obvious choice following a much earlier pact, which started as a joke, that if they were to live in the bride’s hometown, they would get married at Joseph’s hometown. Joseph wanted a large venue, rich in history and flair. Being in the heart of the island’s capital, Casino Maltese ticked all the boxes on their wish list. At first Sephora worried it might be a bit too much for their guests to walk from City Gate so transport was organised and people were dropped off at the venue’s doorstep. Antonio Piscopo Wines and Spirits provided beverages on the night. Being Christmastime, they incorporated

this spirit into their wedding and paid great attention to detail. Joseph is the events manager at Popeye Village and was extremely clear on what he wanted. Sephora confesses he planned the majority of the wedding: “He researched so much that I had to give in at times. I only had to take care of the way I looked – I must admit, this was a big plus for me. He looked into the nitty-gritty and I played along”. “After assisting in so many of my clients’ weddings, I had to have a main role in the planning of our wedding and did not want to be the laid back stereo-type groom but wanted to enjoy the event planning too,” Joseph says. “Ultimately, it’s my daily bread and butter”.

A large, custom made wooden Christmas tree with wooden baubles on which guests wrote messages, replaced the traditional guest book. Candy canes and ginger bread men were given out to children and towers of beautifully crafted cup-cakes and honey rings further decorated the venue. They also had a large Christmas tree with their prewedding photos replacing baubles. The bridal bouquet, as well as those of the bridesmaids and flower arrangements in church, was a mix of red and ivory roses, silver acorns, berries, mistletoe and other Christmas motifs. Invitations were very plain and classy with

the wording in Maltese – a must for Sephora since she’s a Maltese language teacher. The use of the language was also prominent on a large wooden board with a romantic saying and on the unity candles at the altar. Souvenirs were a small decorated box with a silk bow tie signifying a small Christmas gift holding five ivory perlini. These were crafted by the bride. A donation was made to the charity Qalb it-Tfal, which helps the intensive care unit for newborns and toddlers at Mater Dei Hospital (NPICU). Sephora walked down the aisle in an ivory lace mermaid dress. Complete with a detailed belt and an ivory fur cape, it hugged

her silhouette and she felt the dress spoke to her. A cathedral veil with lace details flowed behind her. “I took my best friend, Joseph’s sister, my sister and my mother with me to most of the bridal shops and the choice was between a ball gown and a mermaid, but ultimately I decided that for my petite figure, the mermaid would work best,” Sephora says. Joseph wore a classic black tuxedo with an ivory bow tie – a must for him. This, along with the groomsmen tuxedos, were rented from Cefai Formal Wear. All the groomsmen had personalised cufflinks signifying their role.

Wedding rings are simple yet elegant, with white gold trims and a gold centre. Both bands have the names of the spouses engraved on the inside and Sephora’s has a small diamond encrusted in the middle. The couple danced to a concoction of pop songs including a slow start to Michael Bubble’s Everything followed by Shut Up and Dance, Bang Bang, Hey Mama, Moves like Jagger and Wild, Wild Love. “Joseph wanted a nontraditional first dance even though I am quite shy, so he got a friend to combine the music,” Sephora says. “We must thank Sarah Lanzon for her patience during all the rehearsals”. The Residents five piece band, one of the

exclusive bands of Tunin Entertainment, were excellent at entertaining the crowd for hours. They were followed by DJ My Kill for the after party. The guests’ biggest surprise was when Joseph sung and Sephora played the violin on the internal balcony that goes round the main ballroom of the venue. “We performed Michael Bubble’s Close your eyes, a favourite to both of us, and the crowd went wild,” the couple remark. On the occasion, CLD - Caruana Light Decor were in charge of creating atmospheric lighting and the required ambience. Joseph couldn’t help feeling nervous as soon as Sephora stepped into church jet the

jitters went away while walking into Valletta which was decorated in festive lights as shoppers waved and took photos of them. On the eleventh hour, they decided to honeymoon in Sri Lanka and Dubai following a visit to Staff Travel. The destinations were initially not on their cards as they were planning to spend Christmas in Scotland or Lapland. “Sri Lanka was exceptional,” they note. “You learn that the wealth of a country is not measured by its economic status but by the richness of its heritage, environment and hospitable people who have very little but are so thrilled by what is around them”.

o you want to make your special day… special? Do you want it to be memorable for yourselves as well as for your guests? There’s no doubt the answer to those questions is a big, resounding ‘yes’. Well, here’s how Mdina Glass, Malta’s preeminent producer of handmade glassware can

help you on your way to achieving those goals. Mdina Glass is no stranger to weddings. For many years, couples planning their big day have been heading over to the Ta’ Qali outlet for wedding favours and mementos, or to order tailor made gifts, commemorative items and cake toppers. Now, in addition to this, the glassmaker has

Nero Lanterns create a special romantic warmth, indoor or out

embellished a small number of local wedding receptions with some of its most impressive creations on a rental basis. Products include colourful hanging ball lights, intricate chandeliers and warm, romantic candle-lit lanterns. As Olivia Said, who heads production and product design at Mdina Glass explains, “When we introduced a number of new products in recent years, clients started to show an interest in them to make their reception venue something extra special. It wouldn’t be feasible for clients to buy the products for that one evening, so we reserved a number of items and came up with an option to rent.” Even though a number of weddings have used this service it is only this year that it is being made official. Rentals include consultation, delivery, installation and dismantling.

T

he theatrical set for the love story between Aladdin and Princess Jasmine served as a backdrop for the beginning of Rebecca Galea and Kevin Abela’s romance during the 2009 Christmas pantomime. She was part of the cast and he was musical director. They caught each other’s attention in between rehearsals. One chat led to another until they became an item. Three years later Kevin proposed to Rebecca under the Grand Harbour break water bridge. They tied the knot on 7th June 2015. Both wanted a simple and classic wedding with a touch of shabby chic styling. “The simplicity of it all made our day different and special. Keeping everything simple allowed us to really enjoy every second of the day with our guests,” Kevin remarked. Before the wedding, guests received invitations printed on recycled paper, sticking to the shabby chic theme. A donation was given to the Malta Community Chest Fund instead of the traditional wedding favours. Rebecca had a clear idea of how she wanted to look like while going up the aisle. At first she wanted to have her dress tailor made because she thought she would never find the perfect dress, ready-made. “I wanted to go around shopping for wedding dresses to try on a few, making sure the style I had in mind would suit me. After trying the first three dresses at Alamango’s, I realised that I had found my dress!” Rebecca exclaimed. As for the groom’s suit, Kevin’s father Twanny Abela is a fantastic professional tailor, so there was no question on who was to make his wedding suit. The bridesmaids wore baby pink floor length dresses. The venue chosen for the civil ceremony and reception was Razzett L-Abjad in San Gwann. “We wanted somewhere that had lots of greenery, so we started looking for the perfect garden setting.

I DO 29

We had attended a wedding held at Razzett l-Abjad and we instantly fell in love with the venue. We visited the place again the next day and placed a booking,” Rebecca told I Do magazine. Flower Arts by Joseph Baldacchino took care of making sure the venue looked every inch shabby chic, using lots of flowers and burlap. “Joseph was fantastic; he understood every detail I had in mind as to how we wanted to decorate the venue,” Rebecca continued. Frendo Enterprises enhanced the setup with their silver chiavari chairs, table décor and white carpet. Tunin Entertainment’s exclusive band The Residents entertained the 550 guests till the early hours of the next day. Before the newlywed couple’s first dance to Michael Buble’s song, ‘Close your eyes’ Kevin wholeheartedly played one of the couple’s favorite Maltese songs ‘Fejn Thobb Il- Qalb’ on the trumpet. This was followed by a surprise presentation of photos of the couple and their friends. Infinitely Xara caterers were hired to take care of the wedding food and wedding cake while Hansa Wines and Spirits supplied the bar with drinks. Transport was taken care of by Mik’s Garage. Rebecca recalled the wedding ceremony as the highlight of her wedding day, “We exchanged vows which we wrote ourselves. This made our ceremony very intimate and personal. I cannot describe how special those few minutes were.” During the wedding vows, the couple exchanged rings with a personal message engraved on the inside, evoking the emotions felt during the big day. The funniest moment was caught on a video. “We never planned or practiced our first dance, so we tried to improvise.

30 I DO

We did not see it coming when we almost fell on top of each other.” Rebecca and Kevin’s wedding day was about them finding that loved one they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with. “I finally found the person that I want to spend the rest of my life with. I just wanted to make it official and share

the moment with all our friends and family,” Kevin added. Just two weeks before the big day, Rebecca’s brother was involved in a serious accident and had to be admitted to the ITU. The couple seriously considered postponing the wedding but after lots of thought, they decided to go on with their plans.

Thinking about her brother in hospital during the wedding, was the most heartbreaking feeling for Rebecca. “We cheered for him as soon as the ceremony finished and kept him in our thoughts during the reception. I also wore his button-hole flower on my hand all day long, just to keep him with me in spirit. In the morning of the wedding I visited him at the ITU before I went to the venue to help out with decorating,” Rebecca recalled. Rebecca and Kevin spent their honey moon in Rome. They planned everything themselves soon after they landed in Rome. It couldn’t have been more perfect. Rebecca described it as a holiday that will remain imprinted in the couple’s heart forever.

HANDPICKED FOR YOU

2016 floral trends Celebrated florist JOSEPH BALDACCHINO discusses new floral trends and fresh, beautiful, flower bundles that guarantee sophistication for both brides and bridesmaids alike.

I

f you’re aspiring to be a perfectly polished bride or would like your flowers to give you a freshly picked feeling, now is the time to say ‘I Do’. As vintage styles take a step back in bridal fashion and floral décor, minimalistic elegance and sophistication is taking its place. Yet there’s also a touch of rustic and bohemian, glamour and chic. “The secret is not keeping it too neat,” Joseph explains. Asymmetric shapes and unstructured globes of succulents, roses, peonies, hydrangeas and orchids, accentuated with hints of colour are the perfect combinations for bridal accessories in 2016. Interesting vases and unexpected

containers, coupled with rich accessories and a touch of bling, are all the rage. Joseph explains that 2016 will be all about custom made structures carefully paired with the chosen venue, enhanced by clusters of flowers and hanging crystals. Equally making a visual impact are geometric and sculptural floral designs ranging from hanging arrangements on gazebos to tree-hanging candles and glass balls. Oversized pink garden roses and orchid blooms add a whimsical element to spring bouquets. Meanwhile, carefully sourced vases holding a few blooms, create the perfect mood for the modern couple. For the adventurous bride, floral accessories including head pieces,

bracelets, earrings and necklaces, made out of intricately paired flowers and succulents, make a definite statement. Yes they will surely be one of a kind! If you’re in love with backdrops, but believe they’re too labour intensive, opt for natural foliage based show stoppers including branches, vines and leaves which are equally beautiful as flower arches yet fresh and more creative. As always, simplicity is key and Joseph is sure to give you the right advice based on your ideas, favourites and personality.

Joseph’s brainchild Flower Arts takes care of all wedding day floral needs. For more information about Joseph’s work visit www.flowerarts.net or call on 99260645 for an appointment.

T

iffany blue was the theme of choice for Abigail Attard and Christian Cortis’s wedding. Inspired by the brand Tiffany & Co., the bride always dreamt of an elegant and classy wedding. Abigail and Christian met through common friends, five years ago in a Paceville bar. “Although it was not love at first sight, after a couple of hours from meeting Chris. I imagined myself spending the rest of my life with him. He made me laugh and I instantly understood how generous he was,” Abigail told I Do. They started to get to know each other in the following five months spending long hours chatting on Skype. “We used to talk about everything till early morning. It was definitely worth the sleepless nights. We knew each other quite well by the time we officially started dating. In fact it was a silly argument that led us to realize that both of us wanted to be more than just friends,” she went on. Two years ago, the couple decided to take their relationship up a notch by getting married. “It was the day after my best friend’s wedding in

40 I DO

which I was a bridesmaid. I recall Chris asking me how I would feel about setting our own wedding date. I was elated of course.” The bride-to-be always dreamt of having the most romantic proposal. “I thought it would never happen but just a year before our big day, Chris set up a nice surprise for me. As soon as I entered his room I saw rose petals scattered on the bed reading I Love You. At that stage I was eagerly waiting for my engagement ring but that was nowhere to be seen. It was hidden in a box of chocolates,” Abigail said smiling. The wedding was held on 13 June last year at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa. The celebrations continued with a reception held at Villa Arrigo in Naxxar. Mik’s Garage was hired to take care of transport arrangements throughout the wedding day. “Getting married in the Sanctuary was an important aspect of our wedding day. It offers a very intimate setting and it was the same chapel were my parents and grandparents tied the knot.” The wedding mass was celebrated by Fr Mario Dimech while soprano Claire Caruana sang hymns.

The chapel was decorated with white orchids, hortensias and calla lilies, to create a natural and elegant atmosphere. The same style was used at the wedding reception. The florist also included some crystals for a touch of elegance and a modern twist. To add a touch of glamour, Abigail imported different types of fine glitter and German-made glass pieces, decorated with the couple’s initials. A tiffany blue colour palette was used to contrast with pure bridal white. The reception was held at Villa Arrigo. Choosing the reception venue was an easy decision for the couple. “We loved the setup and the professionalism of the staff as well as the great food by Osborne Caterers.” The bride wore a Pronovias, offwhite dress made from French lace and embellished with crystals, to walk up the aisle. She wore a matching lace bolero during mass. “I was very comfortable with the dress that I chose as it reflected myself a lot. It was simple yet very elegant. The bridesmaids wore Tiffany blue dresses, in line with the theme, while the groom and the male wedding party wore suits hired from The Knot. The 450 guests were entertained by the young and energetic band Red Electrick. They performed Ed Sheeran’s song Thinking out Loud for the newlywed couple’s first dance. Instead of souvenirs, a donation was given to the Hospice Movement. They also gave guests jars of honey accompanied by a honey dipper stick. Abigail and Chris went to Santorini for their honeymoon. “It is a very romantic and relaxing island. We had a great time there enjoying each other’s company. The views were breath taking, the locals were very friendly and the Greek cuisine was delicious. We had a very nice suite with our own private pool overlooking the cliffs. That made our honeymoon even more memorable. We made our own arrangements while we were on the island as we did not want to plan anything beforehand to explore the island one day at a time.”

We love you’, Geraldine says. “He set it all up while I was in the shower, so when I walked in the room there was Hayley sitting on the bed, dressed up with rose petals around her and the box with the ring inside”. Still wrapped in towels, Geraldine was over the moon and called her sisters who were also half dressed in another room. They celebrated over

dinner that night and shared champagne by the pool the next day. The couple met through common friends on MSN nine years ago. Geraldine asked him out for a midweek drink and he accepted. They bought their own place after five years and had Hayley in 2012. Geraldine and Kurt planned a morning, summer wedding and decided to exchange vows at Lapsi Church due to its intimate setting and ideal size. Everyone laughed as they were about to exchange vows and the priest called her Gertrude instead of Geraldine, just after he said that the serious part of the ceremony was about to start.

Villa Arrigo was the selected venue as they had been to quite a number of weddings there and found the service and food, provided by Osborne Caterers, to be consistent and of high quality. The gardens and indoor area added to the value. Geraldine had two dresses - a classic, beaded gown with the back designed in the shape of a butterfly and a fun, more comfortable one comprising of a boob tube and a lovely tutu featuring a longer back. She admits that being lighter and unconventional, the second one was more herself. Both were bought from Ivory & Co. Kurt and the groomsmen meanwhile rented their attire from Bortex. Invitations were very simple yet dainty while souvenirs were handmade by the couple. “It took us over four months to get them all done but we wanted something unique and specially made by us,” Geraldine says. “It was a peg painted as a bride & groom, to which we stuck a magnet so a photo could also be clipped and attached to it. We ordered personalised M & Ms and tied them to the peg in a little bag”.

Geraldine planned her wedding to be a celebration of colours and a special event for themselves and their guests. While not going overboard with a theme or chosen decor, they had Geraldine’s favourite quote “love is a big deal” shaped in polystyrene and hung to a tree. This was also nicely decorated with crystals and candles. The after party area was revamped with helium balloons that spelt DANCE as well as proper lighting. They shared a special moment as they danced to Ed Sheeran’s Thinking out loud. Crosswalk, exclusive artists of Tunin Entertainment, then got the crowd jumping nonstop. “We also surprised our guests with Ira Losco and Gianluca Bezzina singing Xemx – a duet their 550 guests were not expecting but eagerly joined in as a choir. They were glad that following months of preparations, everything fell into place on the day as the selected suppliers were professional and knew their job well. After enjoying their wedding to the full, they travelled with their daughter to Sardinia. Arrangements were in the hands of Geraldine’s sister who works as a travel agent.

O

n November 12, 2007, Maria and Adam had their first born – daughter Aaliyah – after having been dating for three years. At 20 years of age, Maria was still pursuing her last year at University. With plans to have their own home and settle as a family, Maria embarked on her career as a teacher. Adam soon started his job as an offshore oilfield worker and having spent so many evenings together at the St Julian’s pitch, having to say ‘goodbye’ every couple of weeks was hard. However this soon became routine and they bought a house together. Plans for the big day were on the horizon and although a rough patch pushed them to take separate paths for some time, their love grew deeper and stronger.

“We decided to move in together and live the dream we always wanted to live, as a family together with our precious daughter,” Maria says. “Living together was a pleasant experience which brought us even closer”. Two years later they started planning for their second child and Maria shared the news with Adam that they were to become parents again over the phone in August 2013. They tied the knot a year after welcoming their son Zach. Feeling secure and settled, it was the right time for them to celebrate their love with their family and children. “We were both delighted with this decision and couldn’t wait to tell our parents and relatives. The planning for the big day started and within eight months we had all the wedding arranged,” Maria says.

I DO 53

“Our wedding was a day to treasure and it was a really pleasant experience to have our children witness the love we have for each other”. They chose Ibraġ Church for their wedding mass since both their children were baptised there. Maria and Adam recall that the funniest moment of the day was in church when, feeling a bit nervous, they confused left and right to the amusement of their dozens of witnesses. Maria’s wedding ring is in yellow and white gold with three diamonds while Adam’s band is in white gold. As they stepped out of church to be greeted as newlyweds, ivory and pink balloons, prepared by Celebrations 2000, were released. The elegant Villa Arrigo, with its immaculate gardens and bright, airy interior, was the venue for their vintage-themed wedding. Osborne Caterers made sure to give a personalised service meeting the couple’s requirements.

Maria walked down the aisle in an ivory lace, mermaid dress. The sleek gown was perfectly paired with an elegant tulle cape with a lace embellished neckline and trimming. This was carefully selected with the help of the team at Ivory and Co. Perfectly complimenting her silhouette, the bridesmaids wore blush chiffon dresses with hand-sewn sequined flower motifs. The flower girls had ivory dresses with blush chiffon sashes while daughter Aaliyah’s dress was all ivory, echoing her mum’s. Special thanks go to dressmaker Marguerite Vassallo. Eight-year-old Allaiyah was enthusiastic about being part of her parents’ big day. She carried a small bouquet of blush roses while the other two flower girls had dainty pomander flower balls. A bunch of ivory roses with accents of pink and green foliage completed Maria’s classic and elegant look. Adam’s classic tuxedo, with an ivory waistcoat and a gold cravat, was rented from The Groom.

Decorations at the venue, including white paper lanterns and large letters showing the couple’s name in the garden, were also taken care of by Celebrations 2000. Norbert Borg provided musical entertainment with one of his four-piece band formations featuring Ylenia Vella as an additional female vocalist. Maria and Adam danced to Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do, performed by Norbert and Ylenia as a duet. Another special moment was the parents’ dance to the tune of Kelly

58 I DO

Clarkson’s A Moment like This. Ninety minutes of non-stop dancing to the high vibes of the band and vocalists followed. The couple remarks the first dance was their most enjoyable moment as it was when they started to feel relaxed. They chose a classical invite in ivory with a bow and pearl detail which comes in a self-designed embossed pocket. A set of love birds salt and pepper shakers something useful and which guests appreciated - were given out as souvenirs.

Both invitations and souvenirs were chosen from Charming Diva. Maria felt this was an important day for them as a couple and they treasure every moment. In a word of advice, she tells future brides and grooms to enjoy the wedding and not just focus on photos. They honeymooned for a week in Nice and Monte Carlo driving all the way through the unforgettable scenery of the French Riviera while their parents minded the children.
