MOOD BOARD

W

hile just a couple of months ago no one knew where we were, now couples whose weddings had to be cancelled or postponed are picking up the lists again and looking forward once more to their big day. We’re also sure that there are now other couples who hadn’t previously thought seriously about getting married, but who realise that, now, this is exactly what they want to do – with the person who means everything to them.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER

With all this in mind there is no time to lose. Competition is stepping up for the ideal venues. As far as possible, caterers will want to honour previous clients’ arrangements, as well as new ones. If travel opens up enough guests from overseas will need to plan and honeymoons can be dreamt of once again. Disappointing as it may have been, changing your wedding could have some advantages, like being able to sort out any niggling doubts you might have had about certain arrangements or details. You may find yourself rethinking the whole event in the light of present circumstances, and changing your theme entirely. Some couples will aim for bigger the better, others may choose to downsize their ambitions but bring in more personal elements and themes to mark their day. If you decide to choose a completely different time of year to marry remember that everything from textures, colours and catering to locations and light levels will look very different from what you already had in mind.

“With the power of love; our two hearts can enlighten the whole world” - Sir Kristian Goldmund Aumann, author, screenwriter, filmmaker, director and actor.

I DO magazine will be following developments and talking to providers and organisers so we can bring you plenty of ideas and information to inspire your wedding plans. Because we know that now, whatever directions weddings take in the coming months, or years, they will never mean more to the couples who are about to say ‘I do’.

HINTS & HELP

ALL WORK AND NO PLAY

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS THE RECENT MONTHS HAVE TAUGHT US IS HOW VALUABLE NON-WORKING HOURS AND DAYS REALLY ARE.

W

ork time and job satisfaction play a highly important part in a couple’s relationship. Long, demanding days are stressful, even in a job we love, when they seem to impose on time spent together. Talking about your work/play balance is vital to prevent one or both of you feeling undermined or neglected. The early years of marriage can be a financial strain so either of you taking on extra work, for a limited time, to pay for one or two vital necessities should not be a problem. But working all hours for one consumer item after another could end up depriving you of one of the most precious things you can have, time with each other to spend together, just for the sake of it. There are few couples today who don’t both work, even if one may be working part or flexi time, so it’s good to find ways to coordinate your down time early on in your life together. Define how things like overtime, rosters and holiday leave can fit with things you want to do together. High-fliers, of course are known to schedule lunch and dinner dates, as if their other half were a client. And, if that’s what works…. It’s not always easy, if one person has regular hours and weekends and the other doesn’t, but that’s something you will get used to. What really helps you enjoy your time together is being able to leave your work at work. Lots of things can make this quite difficult. The newly-acquired demands of working from home are the first to spring to mind. But after hours, emails, and phone calls interrupting home time, are hugely annoying and stressful. Depending on where you work, this may be what is expected of you. If so, it’s important to recognise the cost it can have on your marriage and family life, and ask yourself whether a 24/7 ethos is really worth it.

Whatever your work patterns make sure that your time together it is mutual time. 6 I DO

Doing something that gives you both equal enjoyment and even a sense of achievement, creates happiness and memories and keeps a relationship alive and exciting. It also helps in getting to really know each other; all the little personality traits that only become obvious with time. And this can be really important if one or other of you meets problems at work. Feeling devalued or threatened, being bullied or dumped on, any impressions of harassment can be devastating. A partner who will listen when you want to talk, leave you in peace when you can’t face anyone, offer thoughtful advice without taking offence if it isn’t followed, and back you up with practical common sense and loving support is indeed the right person to have married! It is also an advantage when any inevitable feelings of competitiveness crop up. Getting on well with colleagues sometimes leads to jealousy. Even when two people are in totally different careers there will be times when one may feel less successful. Income, steps up the ladder, new opportunities and perks are bound to differ. Job descriptions alter, jobs for life are no longer guaranteed. There are bound to be changes and, scary as these are, they can end up being for the best. People who choose a life partner for their personality, without being over-impressed by or dependent on the job they do, will be in the best position to shrug off whatever happens, knowing that there are always alternatives; and they have each other. When necessary, they will be able to make this clear, however shaky they feel. And their partner will believe them, because, when all is said and done, they have a perfect working relationship.

Meet our

model

THE BRIDES IN OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.

NICOLÀ GRIX TI is already an experienced and successful model and we are very happy that she is our mid-summer bride. Where do you live? Gzira, Malta. Where would you like to live? I love living in Malta However, it has always been a dream of mine to experience living in a foreign country such as the UK, the Netherlands or even Australia. What is the happiest job or career you could have? As a model it has always been a dream of mine to model full time and to have a career in this sector overseas however I’m very happy with my current career as relationship officer whilst furthering my studies. How do you like to relax? Binge watching series while snacking on my favorite snacks during winter, and in summer I like to relax by spending a day at the beach enjoying a couple of cocktails. Who are the people who make you happiest, for what reasons? My closest ones make me the happiest as they make me feel comfortable, safe and loved as that’s what matters the most to me; and my pets of course. What could the world do without, and what does it need more of? I believe that the world needs more trees and more people who are accepting of one another, more people who simply love the living. The world can definitely do without greed. How do you feel about social media, and what do you mostly use it for? Social media can be used to inspire, it’s a great marketing platform and it’s very useful to keep in touch with friends and family. Having said that, it can also be used to spread negativity and manipulate others and it is up to us to make sure that it is used in the way that it serves others the most. I mostly use social media to connect with my friends and to promote myself as a model and all the brands which I collaborate with.

Keep your SUMMER MONTHS MIGHT GUARANTEE GOOD WEATHER FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY, BUT IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOUR GUESTS STAY CHILLED OUT.

P

lanning your perfect outdoor summer wedding takes more than dreaming about dresses and visualizing venues. So many aspects of your day need careful attention to detail. Here are some that can easily be over looked till it’s too late.

WHERE AND WHEN? Visit your wedding venue at the approximate season and time of day that you will be celebrating your wedding. Notice at what angle the sun is shining on the areas you will be using; are there plenty of vines, trees, terraces and places of shade? Work out where the most breezy patches are likely to be, and make sure there is access to air-conditioned rooms nearby for those guests who suffer in the heat. If you are having your actual wedding ceremony and reception in the same venue you will certainly save your guests extra travel. But where that is not possible consider hiring people carriers with good a/c for guests who don’t have their own transport. To avoid the hottest hours of the day make 4pm your earliest starting point. We have hardly any twilight in our part of the world, but that will give you time for photographs in a good light. Pre plan locations for group photos with your photographer to save everyone having to stay in the heat for too long. FOOD AND DRINK From glasses of chilled fresh fruit juice and smoothies on arrival, to the last sweet treats, choose a menu or serving stations for their variety and lightness. Even traditional pastizzi can be fluffy and bite-sized. Portions do not have to be huge, no one will starve. And the idea of it being too hot to eat will soon vanish as an array of delicious dishes appears. Cocktail carts with low or no alcohol choices will be a great way for younger and cautious guests to stay refreshed between all the toasts. And a fresh fruit sculpture or basket, ice-cream or sorbet trolley will also prove extremely popular to compliment the desserts. Keeping everyone hydrated throughout the day is essential. Appoint someone in the groom’s and bride’s parties to ensure there are bottles of water readily available for whoever needs one. And by remembering how bad alcohol is for causing dehydration, quite a few problems can be avoided. GUESTS AT EASE Which comes first your dress code or your guests’ comfort? Well it should be a no brainer. If you are inviting friends, or even family, who need reminding what is appropriate to wear, then you do so at your own risk. Go easy on the formal bit, especially for the men and boys and trust that most people will make just as much, if not more, effort to look the part and they’ll all be a lot happier. You could even suggest guests also wear plenty of white, with additions of

24 I DO

r wedding cool

colour for an original, fresh look. These days there is no reason why only the bride should be all in white. For the sake of your bridal party go for dresses and outfits in natural fibres and shoes that feel like slippers. Everyone will suffer otherwise, and their strained expressions as they try to hide this will spoil the photos. CREATURE COMFORTS Seeing everyone having a wonderful time is what all couples wish for their wedding celebrations, and a few little additions to a summer celebration can ensure your guests enjoy every minute. Older churches are often quite cool, but others may need natural or artificial cooling. Don’t be tempted to skimp on this, it’s not worth it. Ensure outdoor services are set in the shade. The order of service and a message from the couple can be specially designed and printed on paper fans and placed on each chair before the guests arrive. Instead of souvenirs a goody bag with wipes, a cooling spritzer and insect repellent, made of natural ingredients, in a small tube or aerosol, would be welcomed by one and all. Bridesmaids could carry a small flower-lined parasol instead of a bouquet as a charming way to avoid the sun, if at any time they have to be in it. The possible mandatory, or courtesy requirement for people not to sit too close together will also help them keep cool during the reception. So will ensuring the seating is not metal, plastic or some other material which can get uncomfortably hot Finally it’s a good idea to identify a competent family member or guest with first aid qualifications who can be relied upon to handle any symptoms of heatstroke or dehydration quickly and calmly, so the show can go on for everyone.

The crowning touch YOU HAVE FOUND YOUR DREAM DRESS, NOW IT’S TIME TO LET IT GO TO YOUR HEAD.

W

hether you choose a veil or not, a head band or hair decoration will really top it off. Simple or elaborate, it can represent your wedding theme, your personal style or a family tradition. And getting it right is essential. First and foremost, your headwear needs to reflect your personality. If you’re sure you can carry off glitter and glitz go for it. If you’re go-to look is sweet and simple nothing beats, petals and pearls, and if you seek chic and sophisticated there are plenty of choices for you too. Suit yourself by giving a lot of thought and attention to basics, like your height and colouring, your hairstyle and the shape of your face and, of course, your dress and the materials you like to wear. Other important things to consider are when your wedding will be held; day or evening, summer or winter. How you will be travelling to your ceremony, whether you will want a change for an after party, or between the ceremony and the reception. Even the jewellery you wear and the bouquet you carry can influence your choice of head wear so there is plenty to think about. Take all the time you need before you make your final choice. Unless you will be wearing a priceless family tiara, try on as many examples as you can or, better still, go for something handmade especially for you. And, never under estimate the importance of comfort and security. However beautiful it looks, don’t fall for a head dress that wobbles or pinches, unless it is pressured and pinned into position. It could totally spoil your day. When you have made your choice, take it to your hairstylist. The right head dress with the wrong style, or visa versa, will just ruin the whole effect. But one created with the other should turn out just as you hope. Head pieces by SC Bridal Designs.

ARRIVING IN STYLE

ALL BRIDES DREAM OF SWEEPING UP TO THEIR WEDDING CEREMONY AND RECEPTION VENUES IN STYLE, SO THEIR CHOICE OF CAR IS VERY IMPORTANT.

E

very couple knows how much it takes to organise a wedding, the reception, caterer, their clothes and, of course, how everyone will get to the ceremony on time. Over many years, TONY DALLI has been helping brides and grooms with planning their wedding transport. So I DO asked him for some points couples should consider. For example, did you realise that some of the most popular car models need to be booked as long as two years in advance? Yes, if you have a particular make of car in mind to suit your theme, or your ideal pre wedding shoot, it’s important to reserve it in good time.

show you cars which will be perfect for your dream wedding, the weather you can expect for the time of year it takes place, even the style of the bride’s dress, so she can step in and out of the car easily, looking elegant and unruffled. Will it be traditional, classic or vintage, like a Rolls, Bentley or Mercedes, or iconic, like a Beetle or a 1963 Cadillac? There should be several variations on all these for you to see. A summer wedding calls for a convertible, but the model should always offer the couple enough shelter from any breeze. All brides will agree that a carefully styled wind-swept look is always better than the real thing. In the cooler months a roomy car, with interior lighting is always a popular choice.

PRACTICAL CHOICES It may be obvious but when you go to discuss your wedding cars take a very realistic, well planned ‘shopping list’, based on your theme and colour scheme, the date and time of your wedding, whether you need a shuttle service from your ceremony to the reception, and, believe it or not, the bride’s dress. With a clear take on all of the above a reputable, experienced firm will be able to

FELLOW TRAVELLERS There are no set rules for who travels in which cars to and from a ceremony. Consider how many people are in the wedding party and if children are included. Think about who will travel with whom and tell your transport provider. He should have no trouble finding you exactly what you need. And, if that should include a smooth vehicle that can not only take a wheelchair comfortably but also looks like stylish

saloon, it would be no problem for a company that cares as much about your big day as you do. PERFECT TIMING However you feel about brides being a few minutes late, timing is vital to keep everything running smoothly. Check what details your driver/s will need regarding pickups and destinations. Don’t forget to allow for photos. Directions can help, but the most successful drivers will map out their journeys and timing before hand, and even have alternative routes in mind in case of road works or delays. Another thing to discuss is transport after the reception. This is where you need someone who can offer choices from a taxi sevice to buses that can leave a couple of hours apart, so guests of all ages can leave when it suits them. AND Y OUR SEND OFF Very possibly some of your loving friends and family will have ideas about decorating your car before you go. They should ask first. And perhaps remember that your magnificent motor has been chosen because it is perfect, just as it is!

THE COUPLE

Angie Marie & Robert 6 July 2019 Angie Marie Formosa, 25, an accountant and Robert Grech, 29, an engineer, were married in Santa Marija Assunta Parish Church Zebbug, Gozo.

CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL wo days before Christmas Angie Marie was at a traditional gala dinner hosted by Robert’s parents. She had been told to wear a maxi skirt, because ‘this year it was going to be more special’, but she suspected nothing. Later at Ta’ Frenc restaurant, as violinists played romantic music Angie Marie remembered that: “After a while, Robert told everyone to be quiet because he had an announcement. He started a speech and went down on one knee. That was how he proposed. I was lost for words and couldn’t say a word! I was so happy and shocked in a good way! I was not expecting this. In my mind I wished my family was there too. I looked around and he had invited them as well!”

T

A TRUE FAMILY WEDDING Angie Marie has always lived in Zebbug and loves her village, so Santa Marija Assunta Parish Church was a natural choice. The couple walked up the aisle on a splendid red carpet, by JPR Rentals, for a service, which they described as so special and emotional. It was celebrated by Mons. Mario Grech, Robert’s uncle and his cousin Carl. There was also the ex-arch priest of Zebbug; who was very close to them Dun Rueben Micallef, Angie Marie’s mother’s cousin Fr Joseph Vella who celebrated her parents‘ wedding, Fr Joe Borg whose Masses Angie Marie’s late grandma attended everyday, Fr Brian Meilak, parish priest of Kercem, Fr Eddie Zammit, a family friend and the arch priest of Zebbug, Dun Gwann. »

I DO 33

“After being in a relationship for quite a while you realise that you want to spend your life with this person.” – Angie Marie and Robert.

» The music in church was a surprise for the couple from Robert’s uncle, Maestro Carmel Peter Grech and his orchestra Stella Maris, with soprano Georgina Gauci, alto Mariella Spiteri Cefai and tenor Angelo Muscat. “The music was written specifically for our wedding and it was simply beautiful listening to those songs the first time during our wedding”, they recalled. Angie Marie wore a dress, by Ivory and Co., her favourite from three she tried on. “I had no doubt from the beginning which was my favourite. It was off shoulder, with lace and also had a lot of beads. It was love at first sight. Then I bought another one which was more comfortable, to dance in later”, she explained. For jewellery, she chose simple small earrings and a pendant necklace, from Sterling Jewellers. And, she combined two loves, shoes and Gucci, with a pair of white Gucci shoes. For her bouquet she wanted a mix of roses and other flowers to match the pastel shades of the bridesmaids’ dresses. All the bouquets were made by Carmen, at Il-Gardina, and they were perfect, Angie Marie confirmed. As Robert loves suits and wanted a suit that he could keep for the memory. The couple went to Sarto, where Marc kindly showed them several suits. They chose a blue Dolce Gabbana suit, with black lining, a good idea as the groomsmen would be wearing black, from Cefai Formal Wear. They both wanted very personal rings. Terence at Alencia showed them several different options. Their style choice included their initals and the wedding date engraved on the inside. THE DREAM RECEPTION This took place at Ta’ Frenc. “We love the venue and the food, and also the very friendly owner MaryGrace is very kind and helpful”, said Angie Marie. »

34 I DO

» As they love to do everything themselves they had been planning the details for quite a while. Angie Marie wanted a white flower wall backdrop, and she made it herself, starting months earlier so each flower could be added individually. It was lit by a chandelier at the reception. They also wanted their cake displayed on a plain hanging transparent table, in the middle of the venue. As an engineer Robert did this himself, and lighting expert Joeloui Grima, from MST AudioVisual, used fairy lights to create a beautiful crown effect around it. Ta’ Frenc weddings include catering and the couple honestly would not have changed a thing. “We discussed what we wanted with the chef and decided on the menu we were really happy with. We were very satisfied. Everything was so fresh and

delicious”, the couple remembered. Their white and gold cake, also by Ta’ Frenc, included their initials and a personalised 3-D cake topper, by Jonathan at Gozo Graphics. “The result was really nice and we really loved our personalised cake topper”, they said. DISNEY DANCING As Angie Marie and Robert both love Disney they decided their first dance would be to the song A Whole New World. One of Angie Marie’s closest friends, dancer Andrew Buhagiar, who also teaches dances for weddings, loved the idea and prepared a dance which they really enjoyed doing. Entertainment was by Brass Tubes, directed by Maestro Mark Gauci, and Sarah Bonnici sang with them throughout. Gianni

joined in for the after party. Later Marco Uomo was a DJ. “We gave him some songs to include in his playlist and we had songs for every generation, so everyone joined in”, said the couple. Angie Marie and Robert had many willing helpers for their wedding, including Brian Sultana as their wedding planner. Her mother assisted with the things she was doing herself. Robert’s brother, Marlon George Grech, owner of Earth & Castle videography, did a splendid job, capturing the best moments during their special day. The couple had nothing but praise for everyone who was super helpful and really worked had to make their day super special. “I really thank them from the bottom of my heart!” Angie Marie concluded.

Annalise & Justin 10 August, 2019 Annalise Bonello, 24, a kindergarten teacher, and Justin Debrincat, 28, a multi-skilled fitter were married in the Collegiate Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady, Xaghra.

A PERFECT PROPOSAL nnalise and Justin met through a mutual friend and for two years their love story grew. On September 21, 2017 Justin decorated her bedroom with balloons and flowers and presented her with her dream diamond ring. Annalise began her wedding preparations by sending out individual proposal cards, hand-made by Marcelle Rapa, of Plush Invites, asking chosen friends and family, to be members of her bridal party. The couple’s invitations, also by Marcelle, were inspired by the fabric for the bridesmaids’ dresses and included an elegant, glittering navy blue laser cut design with floral elements, tied with a satin ribbon bow and a crystal brooch. The couple’s big day was celebrated with a Nuptial Mass was celebrated at the Collegiate Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady in Xaghra, chosen because Annalise had lived in the village since she was born. Her dearest cousin Anna Bonello, a singer, and the harpist Jacob Portelli created an angelic atmosphere. There was a red carpet, by Debrincat Carpets and beautiful fresh flower arrangements, by Charmaine Cassar, from Xerri's Garden Centre, who provided all the floral decorations. The bridal party all travelled in style in cars from Victory Garage. »

» Annalise wore a dress from Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive. It was a princess dress with an illusion bodice decorated with Swarovski beading and lace appliqué. The skirt was a shimmery tulle with a beautiful lace hem. She knew it was the one as soon as she tried it on. “It made me feel like a real princess and I loved it”, she said. She added a beaded bridal headband, teardrop earrings and a dainty elegant bracelet, also from Eva Mariee. Justin wore a royal blue tuxedo with an ivory bowtie and the groomsmen, witnesses and best man wore navy blue tuxedos with a satin collar and matching pink bowties. The fathers wore the same but with matching navy blue detailed ties, and the page boy and the ring bearer wore navy shorts with matching vests and a pink bowties. Cefai Formal Wear made them all look young and chic. As a symbol of their new life together, they exchanged white gold rings, tailormade from Alencia. Annalise chose one with sparkling diamonds to match her engagement ring. “Our witnesses were my dearest brother Silvan and Justin’s uncle John who came all the way from Australia to celebrate our special big day with all of us. And as we went out of the church, I was surprised by some of my kindergarten students who came to see me and to take photos with me”, said Annalise. A WARM RECEPTION This was held at Villa Fiorita, in Marsalforn, with its pool and breathtaking views. There were flowers everywhere, and Josiana Buttigieg from Finishing Touches created an outstanding atmosphere to suit the venue, including a wooden ladder in memory of Annalise’s beloved mother. “The best wedding gift I have ever received was, love sent down from Heaven, directly from my Mum on my wedding day,” she remembered. »

» The guests enjoyed Villa Fiorita's own catering, and a cake by ‘Edel’s Cake Covering which was seven layers with sugar flowers, and decorations. During the cake cutting there were colourful fireworks and Justin surprised Annalise by arranging for their initials in fireworks to appear on the villa roof. Live music was performed by the band Cash and Band. Later, DJ Chris Attard ‘FunkyTown’ created a good vibe with a mix of songs for everyone. Justin and Annalise and Justine’s first dance song was to Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Andrea Bocelli. “It was a very romantic choreographed dance, full of love and excitement”, they said. Then Justin, all the groomsmen, witnesses and best man rocked the dance floor with a choreographed dance that they had been learning in the months leading up to the wedding. Instead of traditional souvenirs, the couple made a contribution to Puttinu Cares. And Annalise’s bridesmaids each received delicate drop earrings and a matching bracelet from Stephen Vassallo Jewellers. »

» For wedding favours there were hand-made scented candles in a mason jar with the couple’s initials on the lid created by Marcelle Rapa who also made the personalised cake topper, table numbers, the two personalised unity candles and Mass booklets, were used by the couple while exchanging their vows. All these items were created by using the same theme of our wedding invitations. The kids were given goodie bags, with treats and an activity pack. Annalise and Justin want to thank their parents and everyone who helped make the day special, for all their support, including the talented hairdresser Sonia Grech from Sonia's Hairdressing and their organiser Carmelino Refalo. "It wouldn't have been possible without the help of many people for whom we are so grateful and thankful", they said.

“We cannot express how much love and happiness we felt having everyone there.” – Annalise and Justin.

The time of their lives Photography | Sean Azzopardi

THE COUPLE

Christine & Karl 20 July 2019 Christine Tonna, 26, a primary school teacher, and Karl Joseph Mifsud, 27, a technician, were married in St Gaetan Parish Church, Hamrun.

A ROMANTIC PROPOSAL n the fifth anniversary of their first date in July 2011, Karl decided to surprise Christine with a weekend break in a local hotel. “Little did I know what was going to happen”, she said. While she was getting ready, Karl was preparing their room for the proposal. He decorated it with red petals and candles and put on romantic music. When Christine was ready, she found Karl on one knee holding a ring and asking ‘will you marry me?’ “I was super surprised and actually ran out of words”, Christine continued. “I started crying and obviously the answer was yes. I ended up texting and phoning relatives and close friends in order to tell them the news. It was so beautiful.” To invite their relatives and close friends the couple wanted wedding invitations that were very simple but also elegant and chic. Invite For You, by Polidano Press, understood perfectly what they had in mind. With their help, they chose invitations with all the words printed on a single page, within a gold foil border. They decided their invitations should be closed with a gold ribbon and an attractive tag bearing their personalized monogram. »

» A SENTIMENTAL CHOICE “We got married at St Gaetan Parish Church, Hamrun. We always wanted to get married there, first and foremost because it a very beautiful church and our families are from Hamrun”, said Christine. Music from Animae enhanced the ceremony. Christine wore a wedding dress from WeddingBells, Valletta. “It was actually love at first sight. I totally fell in love with it as soon as I saw it”, she exclaimed. “My mum, sister and niece started crying as soon as they saw me in it and that was obviously another sign that it was actually the dress” she confirmed. The dress, designed by MillaNova, Lorenzo Rossi, was a beautiful ball gown in ivory, made from 10 layers

of fabric covered in beautiful motifs, pearls and gems. “I am totally in love with butterflies so obviously I did my very best to incorporate, gold, petals and butterflies. As Christine also loves peonies, roses and hydrangeas, her bouquet and all the floral decorations included these flowers, and were by Romano Cassar. “Debbie Cassar understood perfectly what we had in mind – simple but elegant and chic”, the couple said. Karl’s outfit included a royal blue suit and the groomsmen had matching navy blue suits, all from The Groom Collection, Sta Venera. Karl and Christine exchanged similar rings, from Alencia. They were a mix of gold and silver and Christine’s ring also had three diamonds. »

“We definitely had the best time of our lives dancing and enjoying our wedding with our guests.” – Christine and Karl

» UNIQUE AND EX CEPTIONAL The wedding party travelled in cars from John’s Garage to the reception at Portomaso Suite, in the Hilton. “It ticked all the boxes of what we wanted to have for our wedding, very elegant, chic, the ceiling is to die for. Their service was top notch, from the very beginning till the very end, and thanks to Anne Marie Abdilla for her guidance and continuous support throughout,” said the couple. The exceptional catering included a very simple yet elegant four-tier cake complimenting their theme of ivory and gold. The cake table was decorated with fresh flowers, as was the top of the cake, which had two tiers each of baci and almond. On the third tier a replica of the monogram with initials which was on their invitations. Guests with a sweet tooth could also visit the candy cart, by Candylicious Malta. “Our first dance, was to Heaven, by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. It has such beautiful words and it actually reflects our relationship”, the couple remembered. Entertainment at the reception was by Puse’ and Band, with Pierre Cordina for the after party. They both did an amazing job and managed to keep everyone on the dance floor all night long. »

» CAREFUL PLANNING Christine and Karl planned their wedding themselves and received a lot of help from their family and friends. However, The Wedding Organizers, by Jurgen Briffa, gave them some helpful tips in the months before the wedding, and on the day. Christine had clear ideas about her hair and makeup, and for these she chose Shasha the makeup artist, Karl Brincau from Karl Brincau’s Hair Salon and Myra Farrugia, from Myra’s Hair and Nails. The couple decided that instead of the usual souvenirs they would give a donation to Misso Malta. “The ceremony was truly a one to remember and will be cherished forever in my heart. We have both been waiting for this day to come and in the presence of our family and friends we exchanged our vows. It was simply the best day of my life,“ Christine concluded.

THE COUPLE

Jessica & Keith 15 June 2019 Jessica Aquilina, 26, a primary school LSE and part time bridal consultant and Keith Borg, 25, a factory worker and part time footballer, were married in Saint Philip Parish, Church, Zebbug. I DO 55

A GOZ O ROMANCE lthough Jessica’s grandmother was from Gozo, she never in a million years imagined she would meet and marry a guy from Gozo. Six years ago, a Gozitan colleague of hers invited her and a friend to Nadur carnival. There she saw Keith and although he was dressed as a woman she decided he looked cute. After all she was dressed as a bee, in a onesie. Keith gave her a coke, not knowing that it makes her hyperactive. After a while he told her she talked too much and left. But the next day he contacted her on Facebook and later he said that as soon as they met he had told himself: she would be his wife and the mother of his children. Jessica and Keith spent five years meeting only at weekends and on Skpe. They talked about marriage because they wanted to be together forever. Then, in December 2016, when Jessica was getting ready for her graduation ceremony Keith gave her the ring she had seen in a shop, and wanted. “He didn’t ask me the question or go down on one knee, in fact he was very shy but I knew exactly what it meant and it was very nice and sentimental”, Jessica remembered. They started wedding preparations, which were very difficult for Jessica because they were getting married in Malta and Keith couldn’t always go with her. But her mother and sister helped a lot. They also had The Wedding Organizers, by Jurgen Briffa. The couple chose their invitations at Invites For You, by Polidano Press. They were of shiny paper, four-sided with a rose gold font, glitter on the front and dancing figures at the top to match their cake topper.

A

A MARRIAGE AND A FEAST After some discussion about where to be married Jessica and Keith decided on Malta, because they were going to live in Gozo. They chose St Philip Parish Church, Zebbug, because Jessica is from there and it is where all the important events in her life took place. »

» The date was near the feast, so the statue of St Philip was still out, and Jessica’s family from abroad enjoyed the wedding and the feast. The church was decorated with large ivory bouquets, and two large vases with ivory bouquets stood each side of the outer door. There was a red carpet and the church bells rang, both provided by Joseph Service. Keith and Jessica’s wedding ceremony was an emotional one from beginning to end. As Jessica and her father arrived at the church he reminded her that there was no need for tears because this was the best day of her life. “So, while walking down the aisle with my father beside me and seeing Keith waiting for me, even though it was so emotional I put a smile on my face along with a tear. My mother and sister are

a huge part of my life, so I wanted them to walk down the aisle before me as well”, she said. Pachelbel Canon D played as Jessica’s five bridesmaids and three flower girls preceded her up the aisle, Ave Maria for her entrance and Tema 79 and Jum it- Tieg Taghna were also played during the service. As a bridal consultant, at Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive, Jessica saw lots of dresses she liked. But when a special dress came into their shop she told James, the owner, that was her dress. “It was a dress that I always imagined myself in, puffy, sparkly and something different, since the guests were expecting something different from me”, she said. Jessica also wanted a very long glittery veil to compliment the dress. When she couldn’t find

one, James and Carmen, the seamstress, found her a piece of material and turned it into a beautiful 6-metre long glittery veil. Jessica carried a bouquet of ivory flowers, to complement the wedding theme, and as a surprise for Keith she added a wooden heart which had given her a few years earlier. All the bouquets and flowers were by I Warda. Keith and Jessica chose the groom’s outfit together, from The Groom Collection. They decided on a two-tone suit with cumberband and suspenders, in grey and black. The couple exchanged rings by Stephen Vassallo Jewellers, Gozo. Keith’s was a simple mix of matte and glossy bands; Jessica’s complimented her engagement ring with diamonds on the top. »

“From the ceremony to the reception it was a roller coaster of emotions but the most important part was marrying each other.” – Jessica and Keith

» “But the most important thing during the whole ceremony was marrying each other and my grandmother being there”, Jessica remembered. The wedding party travelled in cars by Borg Garage, including had a Befourd 7 seater for the bride party, and a limousine for the groom and his groom’s men and a Mercedes for his witness and parents. THE PERFECT VENUE For Jessica and Keith the Limestone Heritage was perfect, having an outdoor area with turf and a marquee. The dance floor, cocktail bar and a lounge area with small tables were outside. Inside they had a food table, a cake table, hanging from the ceiling, and a photo booth, by Alyman Occasions. They chose the upper area to make everyone feel special. There was a red carpet

and lanterns on both sides. Photos were taken near the best feature, the waterfall; something very different and so romantic. Their fairy tale theme was echoed with ivory bouquets everywhere, a carriage full of ivory roses on the guestbook table, tall centerpieces and candles on the round tables and ivory flowers and floating candles on the bistro tables. They chose Corinthia Caterers with a menu that included finger food, food stations and a barbecue with choices to give their wedding both a Gozitan and Maltese touch. Guests were welcomed with a drink from the punch table and Kombi Bar provided the cocktail bar. Their first dance was truly very sentimental. Jessica and Keith both love to party so a slow dance wasn’t on their books. During their relationship they had their song Love Me Like You Do from the film 50 Shades of Grey, and decided that it should be their first

dance. Although Keith is a bit shy, with the help of Jessica’s sister, they learned some moves. There were sparklers and fireworks as Keith lifted Jessica up and they certainly had a first dance to remember. Then Keith’s 13 groomsmen surprised him by dancing along to medley of three different songs, using different props such as sun glasses and removing their blazers. “Keith was speechless. He wasn’t expecting it in a million years, and the guests loved it”, said Jessica. Then everyone danced the night away with The Travellers and at the after party with Dj Nate. The couple are both very grateful to Jessica’s mother for keeping her garter from her wedding for Jessica to use, the bridal party and groomsmen for doing such a good job, their families and those who came from abroad.
