ALL ABOUT LOVE

Welcome to our summer issue of I DO. Now we are at last able to plan the wedding of our dreams without the need for a plan B, or even C, to cover all our hopes and aspirations.

But we have learned some positive things from the past two years. That optimism, sentiment and simplicity are the real key to a happy, successful marriage. The beautiful settings, trappings and trimmings of a wedding day are just reminders of all the good things to come. And all the magnificent wedding service providers who bent over backwards to ensure couples would have the best wedding day possible deserve our undying thanks.

So this is the perfect time to highlight and celebrate the new beginnings and fresh connections that we will be making; and which we hope will last a lifetime.

As all weddings automatically enlarge a family circle we are also focusing on family. As someone once said “Let’s be in no doubt: a loving family is the true wealth, refuse all imitations!”

Naturally, in-laws, our partner’s family members, all come with their own personalities. It would be very optimistic to suppose that instantly clicking with every one of them will be simple.

But, by remembering that the most important connection couples make on their wedding day is based on the unique, loving relationship they have built between themselves, they should, eventually, be able to see their in-laws as valuable family members.

We also have original features on very different ways to celebrate your wedding. And, as in every issue, our Wedding Story pages give all couples a chance to remember and share the day their new lives began when they said I DO.

FAMILY TIES

So,couples who are convinced they are meant to be happily married choose each other to build their lives together. But no couple is an island. They have families–close and loving or distant and difficult who, one way or another, will make their presence felt.

History, and reality shows are full of doting dads and ‘smothers’-inlaw who, for whatever reason, find it hard, if not impossible to accept the fact that, for better or for worse, marriage will subtly change their relationship with their child.

No matter how close brides and grooms and their in-laws are, there will be times when friction occurs. Asyears go by and circumstances change one set of issues will be replaced by another. So it is essential that couples are clear from their engagement, if not earlier, that they will always remember the couples’ motto ‘you and me against the world‘.

As the younger, less experienced people, adjusting to their new life together, a couple might reasonably expect their in-laws to be the ‘grown-ups’ in the family. If only.

Mothers and fathers-in-law have had expectations of their ideal sons and daughters-in-law since their little darlings learned to sit up. Seeing their influence, regular social and traditional events, and the makeup of the family they created changing, even in the nicest way,is going to hit them hard.

With the best will in the world they will find it hard making room for someone else to take such a vital role in their child’s life.

Families are so different that it would be a waste of time to list endless ideas to impress your in-laws. But, for your own peace of mind it’s good to remember that you cannot change someone who is set in their ways. Both couples and their in-laws need to respect each other’s methods of doing things. Marriage should never be

about point scoring and control, on either side.Only share advice that is asked for and don’t be offended if it is rejected.

Create boundaries that respect your time tables, choices, and decisions as a couple, then present a united front to your respective parents and siblings so no one feels neglected or attempts to interfere – with any hope of success!

And when uncomfortable situations come up be prepared to step away. Rows can escalate very quickly, with old scores being dragged upso, before you know it,all hell breaks loose.

No conflict should ever be about winning or saving face.Just by politely refusing to become involved in an argument you have already ‘won’. And by respecting each other and being prepared to compromise sometimes, great progress can be made.

It takes maturity to handle the relationship balance. To acknowledge the important linkyou each have with your parents and siblings and not let anything drastically upset it.

Create trust and unity by offering friendship instead of family gossip. And never take sides. You may be used to your mother’s opinions, your father’s over-high standards, or a sibling’s jealousy, but imagine how your partner must feel, worrying that they are not up to scratch, and keep a sense of fair play and support.

Don’t be afraid that every little remark will damage your relationship. Stay loving and confident, justbuilding your own lives.

In the end happily ever after comes when you always remember that you chose each other as soul mates who love each other. And nothing and nobody should be able to break that bond.

AS WE ALL KNOW, YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR FRIENDS, BUT YOU CAN'T CHOOSE YOUR FAMILY.

After too long an absence cocktail bars are reappearing at wedding celebrations. Couples can choose a bar that fits their theme, while their guests can drink their health with a fabulous choice of cocktails, mocktails and special brews.

And, since this issue’s theme is connections, and the telephone has been keeping lovers connected for centuries, Damian Muscat’s new Red Telephone Box Bar just happens to fit right in. This is how he came up with the idea.

“The K6 Red Telephone Box, designed in 1935, is a familiar sight on the streets of the UK and Malta. It is often seen as a British cultural icon throughout the world. Our imagination takes us places, and this is why we have handcrafted this timeless Red Telephone Box Bar, which is a fantastic addition to our bars collection”.

STRAWBERRY & SPICE

And, here is Damian’s special take on the richest of red fruits for our cocktail.

“Whilst strawberries are in season, we decided to blend this highly nutritious fruit with a popular and tempting Gin & Tonic”.

Meet our

model

THE BRIDES ON OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.

Our model is Frederica Galea and this is her first shoot for IDO.

Where do you live?

I live in Zejtun.

Where elseyou would like to live and why?

If I had to move and live anywhere internationally I would choose Japan. A few years ago I had the opportunity to experience life in Japan for five weeks and I was mesmerized by their culture, norms, and the general approach of Japanese people towards life.

What is the happiest job or career you could have?

During my day-to-day job as a Learning Support Educator, I feel very fulfilled seeing children achieve both academic and life milestones. I am also in my happy place when I am modelling as I get to work with several professionals from all over the industry

How do you like to relax?

In between my studies and full-time job, I like to relax by spending my time with my boyfriend, having a good laugh with my friends, and also with my two pet bunnies.

Who are the people, and/or pets who make you happiest, for whatever reasons?

The people who make me the happiest are my family, especially my mother and father, boyfriend, bestfriends and the students. They all love and support me for who and all that I am. They always manage to make me smile.

What could the world do without, and what does it need more of?

The world would for sure be a better place if terminal illness, wars, hatred and discrimination were to vanish forever and instead manifest as positivity, health, acceptance of one another and most importantly, love.

How do you feel about social media and what do you mostly use it for?

I think that social media can be used both positively and (unfortunately) negatively. I like to use social media to catch up with long-time friends, and frequently to display my portfolio. Social media is a powerful tool, and there are no signs of it slowing down. I have seen first-hand how great social media can be when used correctly, for example shedding light on body positivity. However unfortunately I know how it can negatively impact younger generations when used incorrectly. People behind screens tend to go overboard with what they write, without being aware of the circumstances.

I DO 23

The dream dress

WeddingBells' gowns have featured in many I DO bridal fashion shoots. And Marquita kemper has been making brides' dreams come true for 25 years. So, here she shares her inspirations and some wise ways to find the perfect dress.

In1997, when Marquita was finishing her A levels, her mother had had a costume jewellery shop for several years and was branching out into bridal wear and accessories. Marquita was more than happy to join her.At that time brides almost always had their dresses made, either by their dressmaker or a member of their family; some even made their own.

They started with just 12 dresses and success grew quickly. Brides began to discover alternatives styles to the one they’d always thought of as their dream dress and Marquita was too busy to be surprised by the rapid rise in sales.

When choosing today’s stock Marquita’s top priorities are the local market, and the choice of fabrics and styles.

There are certain examples if both which suit our climate, local tastes and culture better than others. Structure is of the essence, a well structured dress will always look absolutely fabulous.

Happy as the occasion is, shopping for a wedding dress can be stressful and Marquita is all too aware of this. She advises brides not to set their hearts on a dress just because it looks perfect on Pinterest and social media without considering whether it would suit them, or their personality, or the fact that most of these gowns are haute couture and cost a fortune. In reality they should be prepared to be adventurous and try on several styles because only then will the dress that’s really meant for them appear.

The fewer people a bride brings to help her choose her dress the better, three or four maximum seems to work. Too many different opinions will just be confusing for her. With all the will in the world, people will choose a dress that they like, but which may not be right for the bride. She should ask someone who can be trusted to understand she is looking for her dress, not theirs.

Family counts, mothers of course. But the most important thing is somebody who really knows her and will respect her ultimate decision. It’s not unknown for a bride to return on her own to change a dress she bought because she was trying to please too many of the people around her.

I DO 7 WEDDING MAKERS
24 I DO

Is it so important to follow tradition with a white dress? It very much depends on the individual. What suits you, your personality, if you are very bubbly and adventurous you might go for a very unusual colour dress. If you’re a more conservative type you’re not going to venture out from what is the norm, what’s expected.

While fashions come and go, fabrics like satin, tulle and lace are always popular and styles which are perennial favourites are classic ones; including the very simple ‘royal look’ you might say. This is fortunate because it means a bride can always choose a dress she knows will never be out of fashion.

Our climate and the amazing number of wonderful wedding settings and venues throughout our islands give brides a certainty that their day can be magnificent. Marquita’s role in all this is a very special one, a mix of hard work, joy, tears and laughter. But it’s one she clearly loves. The happiest part of her WeddingBells experience she says is making brides happy.

I DO 25

Which one is for you?

WHAT SHOULD A COUPLE LOOK FOR IN A TOP WEDDING VENUE?

Make sure that the venue is versatile, and is well kept. We at Villa Arrigo have an elegant house, a large fully air-conditioned and soundproof marquee, purposely built (with service corridors) for all functions, a beautiful garden, and a state-of-the-art sound system throughout the premises. These would be some of the most important items to look for at the first visit.

AND WHAT IMPORTANT DETAILS SHOULD THEY ALWAYS CONSIDER BEFORE BOOKING THEIR VENUE?

What is included with venue like, bars, bistro tables, carpet, furniture etc. also, the elements, depending on the month. Is there is shelter from rain, sun and wind, or even heaters if needed.

HOW DOES A GOOD EVENTS ORGANISER GUIDE A COUPLE WHO ARE CHOOSING WHERE TO HOLD THEIR RECEPTION?

It is all of the above plus the size of venue and number of guests, so that everything fits comfortably. But most important is that the organiser listens and understands what the couple really wants and likes. Many times, they start to give advice and ideas (which would be good), but are they what the couple really what? The most important thing is to listen.

AND HOW IMPORTANT IS THE LIAISON BETWEEN A WEDDING VENUE AND THE PLANNERS, DECORATORS AND ENTERTAINERS A COUPLE CHOOSES?

This is of utmost importance as they all need to be organised and synchronise, with timings and setup, according to each other’s schedule. This is most important for how the couple would like the wedding to proceed.

THE PAST TWO YEARS HAVE TAUGHT EVERYONE INVOLVED IN A WEDDING TO EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. HOW CAN COUPLES BE SURE THAT, NO MATTER WHAT, THEY WILL HAVE THE WEDDING OF THEIR DREAMS?

The last two years have been very fraught. However,at Villa Arrigo we have nearly all that is needed on sight, such as tables, table covers chairs, chairs covers and all furniture and equipment needed. Also we were restricted by the health department, on the number of serving

staff and guests per table. Menus had to be adapted for sit-down meals meaning that most of the couples finished above budget. So we removed most of the extra charges to help continue working and to help the couple too.

THE RESTRICTIONS ON SERVING FOOD AND DRINK MEANT BUFFETS AND COCKTAIL SERVICES WERE OFF THE MENU. GUESTS WERE SEATED AT TABLES AND SERVED SET MENUS OR SELECTIONS OF THEMED FOOD. MANY COUPLES AND THEIR GUESTS WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED AT HOW SUCCESSFUL THIS TURNED OUT TO BE. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT WAS?

When you see full tables laid out, the venue looks beautiful. I don’t think there is a nicer setup,it looks amazing.

Also, there is more bonding as people have much more time to socialise among themselves, with low background music creating a more intimate wedding. And for cocktails, we had trolleysto go around giving each table special attention.

I DO 7
Imagine the perfect reception setting, a wedding feast that truly lives up to the name, advice you couldn’t do without and the service you’ve always dreamt of. We asked Damian Sant Fournier, of Villa Arrigo, how you can find it.
WEDDING PACKAGES 26 I DO

SO DO YOU THINK, ESPECIALLY FOR SMALLER WEDDINGS, MORE COUPLES WILL CHOOSE A SEATED WEDDING FOR THEIR WEDDING CELEBRATION?

I would also consider a sitdown wedding for a small group, as most guests will be family and just a few close friends, who would like to socialise together, then sit-down for a very good meal and afterwards dance the night away, with good entertainment. So the chemistry is perfect.

NOWADAYS, COUPLES ARE VERY AWARE OF THEIR GUESTS’ FOOD CHOICES AND DIETARY ISSUES. CAN A WEDDING VENUE WHICH IS ASSOCIATED WITH JUST ONE CATERER BE SURE THAT ALL GUESTS WILL HAVE THE SAME STANDARD OF DELICIOUS FOODY TREATS?

Yes, for sure, we can cater for all intolerances, and menus will be prepared according to intolerance and preferences.

EACH NEW YEAR I DO LIKES TO LOOK AT UPCOMING TRENDS, AND WEDDING CAKES OFFER A HUGE SCOPE FOR COMBINING NEW AND DELICIOUS FLAVOURS AND ARTISTIC MASTERPIECES. WHAT TYPE OF WEDDING CAKES HAVE YOU SEEN BECOMING MOST POPULAR AND WHAT ARE THE TRENDS FOR THIS SEASON?

The traditional three tier is still the most popular, however some couples decide to have different flavours, like almond at the bottom, bacio in the middle and lemon, poppy seeds,or vanilla cake on top. We normally like to offer almond on the top tier, as this can be taken home by the couple and frozen for their anniversary or any other special occasion.

I DO 27

Family weddingsFamily weddings

Suddenly,

with guest numbers limited and the bubble system making it almost impossible for even best friends to meet together, weddings became ver y much family affairs. And family members became all the more precious as a result. IDO has heard many examples of how brilliantly they stepped up to ensure a wedding could happen, no matter what. From taking on many extra duties during the planning and organising,to helping with everything from entertainment to staging the venue, mothers, fathers, siblings and other relations pitched in to save many a couple’s big day.

And now large weddings are the thing again. But let’s not lose the idea of certain family members having very specials roles in the celebration, because this can add so much joy to the occasion.

When consideringwhichjobsto offer family members, keep in mind their talents, capabilities, ages and sensititivities. After all you want each one to feel honoured and rewarded by whatever role theytake.

When allocating duties, don’t just think of the actual wedding day. Are there sisters, or close cousins who would enjoy meeting up to help

address wedding invitations, choose or make souvenirs, or liaise with suppliers?

The chief bridesmaid, maid of honour, and groomsmen will have their hands full on the wedding day so spreading the load before can please everyone.

Some family members may be willing to host guests coming from abroad, or offer lifts to the celebrations for those who don’t have transport.

If several children will be at your wedding kind aunts, uncles or willing teenage relatives may be persuaded to take turns in looking after them some of the time, so their parents can have a break.

However true it is that a bride’s family does most of her wedding arrangements it is always so nice if the groom’s family is kept well in the picture and included equally in the wedding events.

Ask them if there are any traditions that run in their family which you might be able to honour at your wedding too.

And if there are family members who cannot be with you create a distinctive but simple way for them to be remembered; perhaps with a photo, flowers and candles or by having a special piece of music played.

On the actual day your ‘something borrowed’

could be a family heirloom. Your bouquet may include flowers your mother had in hers, or blooms your father grew especially. A groom could wear a watch or accessories inherited from someone in the family.

You might tweak some of the usual traditions. It would be a lovely gesture for a bride to walk down the aisle with both her parents. And why shouldn’t the groom arrive first with his parents then be joined by his best man?

During the ceremony there are several opportunities to involve family members. A bride’s mother could hold her bouquet, grandparents could give readings or be your witnesses, brothersand sisters could be ushers.

Talented family members could have their moment in the spotlight if they can sing or play a musical instrument at your wedding.

At the reception it’s no longer unusual for the bride to also make a short speech, and for the couple to present their parents with small gifts to go with their thanks for everything.

Weddings are one of the most important family occasions, on so many levels, so finding ways for those who are dearest to you tobe a real part of your weddingwill make it all the happier, and your memories all the more precious.

28 I DO FAMILY CELEBRATIONS

ALL IN THE FAMILY

When we read the wedding story from Francesca and Trevor (see page 54) we were struck by the coincidences that led to the couple and both sets of in-laws choosing the same venue for their celebrations. So we asked them to share their memories of these very special occasions.

FRANCESCA: When I was a little girl my parents used to love to tell me stories and show me photo albums of their wedding. My mother had told me that a few weeks before the wedding they had received notice that their wedding venue had closed down, and it was a mad scramble to find a new location. To their luck a new wedding venue in Naxxar named Villa Arrigo had just opened and the date was available for their wedding day.

TREVOR: My parents always used to love showing us photos and the wedding video of their wedding reception at Villa Arrigo. It brought them happy memories and it was nice to see how weddings were held then.

BOTH: It was a happy coincidence for us as a couple to find that both our parents had their special day at the same reception venue. And since they had a wonderful time it seemed only natural for us to continue that tradition and have our wedding there.

FRANCESCA: I opted for a traditional white wedding dress and flowers were a main emphasis, just like my mother and mother-in-law chose for their wedding.

TREVOR: I went for a classic evening suit just like my father and father-in-law. Other than that our wedding had the classic touches of any traditional wedding including speeches, first dance and father and daughter dance as well as the going away customs.

Bernadette and Mario (Trevor’s Parents) Married on 28 October 1989

In our case we do not think there is much change in weddings when compared to our days. However our wedding did have a small orchestra as entertainment including a pianist and violin player, which is not common in this day and age. However weddings have become a business and more expensive these days.

We were very happy that our son got married at the same venue as us; showing that it still popular in today. And it brought back beautiful memories for us.

Natalie and Charles (Francesca’s Parents)

Charles and I got married on June 13, 1987,with our first date being on June 13,1981!

With regards to weddings the main thing that has changed today,in our opinion, is the use of the internet which is of great help for wedding planning and researchingand purchasing things online from dresses to decorations!

Our daughter’s wedding reception brought back so many beautiful memories including those of our late dear parents as well as other relatives and friends. Seeing both Trevor and Francesca entering the wedding venue was like a mirror image of ourselves 35 years prior –it was a memorable event for all!

GUESTS OF HONOUR

Well today they don’t have to. In fact it has become quite a thing for even four-legged best friends to play an important part in the celebrations. Once you are sure that your venue is suitable, any guests who are not dog fans have been warned and you can honestly say, hand on heart, that your dog will not be freaked out by the whole idea you can start planning what role he or she will play on the big day. During the day your dog could:

◊ Be with you while you are getting ready to help calm any nerves. Pets are known to help reduce anxiety.

◊ Escort you up or down the aisle, or follow you, led by a flower girl or pageboy.

◊ Pose with you in some of the photos, suitably dressed up if you are sure it won’t be uncomfortable.

◊ Be the ring bearer carrying your rings in a small basket or fixed to a cushion on its back.

◊ Act as your greeter, a friendly attention-seeking dog would like nothing better than to welcome your guests on arrival, with a wagging tail and a comical grin.

◊ Be an honoured guest, included in the celebrations, where appropriate, and appearing in some special photos.

◊ And, finally, accompany you both on a quiet break or a short walk alone during the celebrations. Knowing he, or she, is so precious is all your dog needs, whatever the occasion.

I DO 7I DO 31
When they hold such a huge place in our hearts why should our dogs miss something as important as our wedding celebrations?
PET GUESTS

Someone to take a lead

Since there is no way couples can look after their dog during the whole day someone suitable will be needed to be responsible for its comfort and well being and to make sure it is ready to perform any duties it has been given.

We asked EMMA BUTTIGIEG, from HAPPY DOGS how to ensure everything goes smoothly for everyone.

HOW CAN A DOG MINDER HELP COUPLES WHO WOULD LOVE THEIR DOG TO BE AT THEIR WEDDING?

If you are getting married and you want to have your dog present on your most special day, you should hire a wedding dog sitter to take care of the dog/s and keep them under control during the party. Your wedding will be busy throughout the day, with you being pulled in a million different directions, so it is very important to hire an experienced pet sitting team so your family and friendscan just relax and enjoy the wedding!

WHAT SHOULD COUPLES CONSIDER MOST WHEN THEY LOOK FOR SOMEONE TO CARE FOR THEIR DOGS DURING THEIR WEDDING?

Before deciding whether to include your dog in the wedding, the pet’s personality must be taken into consideration. You may assume that your pet will feel comfortable in the crowd, but will they feel overwhelmed with hundreds of guests around? Even if your pet is well-behaved and used to large crowds, there is no real guarantee that they’ll behave well on the day. Experience has shown us that for some dogs, being stroked, photographed or chased by kids can becoming increasingly stressful, so thecouple have to make sure their dog can handle it before involving it.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR A DOG TO MEET ITS MINDER BEFORE THE WEDDING EVENTS?

Meeting with us prior to the wedding will help the dog get to know us before the big day, as some dogs may be nervous or not like strangers. Some couples decide to book dog walks prior to the wedding so the dog sitter and their dog can get to know each other better. We want the day to be as stress free as possible for couples and their dog.

DOGS ARE EASILY CAUGHT UP IN ATMOSPHERE AND SURROUNDINGS SO WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO

ENSURE THEY STAY WELL BEHAVED?

Dogs are like babies – they’re unpredictable! By including your dog in the ceremony, you’re accepting the fact that they may not be completely sweet and perfectly behaved all the time. That’s why it is very important to manage your expectations for your pet, and be willing to laugh when something doesn’t go exactly how you thought it might. Dogs will get excited when they see their humans and will not realise that they can’t just jump up or run to them as they are used to doing.

AND IF WHEN NOT POSSIBLE FOR THE DOGS TO ATTEND THE ACTUAL WEDDING EVENTS HOW CAN COUPLES ENJOY THEIR DAY KNOWING THEIR PET WILL NOT BE LONELY AND MISSING THEM?

Happy Dogs offers in-home dog sitting services to keep your pet safe, comfortable, and happy. If it cannot be present at the wedding, we have you covered as well. We will come to your house and stay with your dog until your arrival back home. Overnight stays are also available.

S ALL IN THE TASTE

Honestly,

making choices for your wedding menu really can be easy and fun. It’s probably fair to say that the menu you offer your wedding guests is as important to them as your wedding vows are to you. A wedding feast has to be just that – a feast.

It could all bevery stressful. So much hangs on you making the right decisions. And to do that you need practical, friendly advice, the right, helpful answers to all your questions, and attention given to the important details you may so easily forget in all the excitement.

You need caterers whose service is courteous and efficient, who provide a wide choice of quality dishes, professionally prepared and presented.

You need people who will help you design the right menu, service solutions and set up, accordingto the size of your location and the activities you have planned for your special day.

PICTURE PERFECT

Makeup is one of the first things a bride thinks of before her wedding, so we’re very happy to introduce Sandra De Gaetano, a professional makeup artist whose personality and ambition have led her to working as makeup artist for bridal makeup and film.

With over 10 years of experience, Sandra’sonly purpose is to empower others. Her passion and drive for this creative life has seen her work featured in international magazines Vogue (UK & Italia), Ellemente (New York), Salyse (New York) magazine, plus several well-knownlocal magazines.

In 2017 being nominated best makeup artist in Malta, encouraged her to specialisefurther; in advanced hair and makeup at one of the world’s most prestigious make up academies, Iver Academy in London, at Pinewood Studios.

During thisadvanced training programme Sandra also trained as an Airbrush Make Up Artist, and while living in London, she was approached by an award-winning wedding photographer to model and also do make up for aninternational bridal dress designer,Morgan Davies.

The photos were launched as the designer’s new bridal collection. “It was possibly the most amazing exciting experience I ever had”, she says.

Sandra now works in both Malta and UK for wedding make up. She is also offering courses to clients who wish to learn how to do their makeup, where she will be giving all the latest tips.

Airbrush makeup is light-weight. It is sprayed on the skin using an air gun machine, and produces a thin, even layer of makeup with a matte finish. Airbrush foundation is high in coverage but extremely light in texture, resulting in a natural but flawless-looking skin using minimum product.

It leaves no visible brush strokes and it is virtually invisible both on-screen and to the naked eye; regardless of the lighting conditions. That is why it’s one of the preferred makeup methods for high-definition film, bridal, photography and television.

It is a perfect option if you’d like to have great makeup coverage without looking as if you’re wearing too much makeup. It’s so lightweight it feels like you don’t have any makeup on.

Airbrushing is so popular because skin looks flawless yet natural. It is non-transferable, water- resistant, photographs beautifully, and can give you as little or as much coverage as you’d like. It is also the best choice for sensitive skin, and to wear in very hot weather, as it is more long lasting than a normal application of makeup.

To contact Sandra for bookings email: sandiesdg@yahoo.com or 7907 9200. Bookings are now officially open for 2023.

A PERFECT COUNTRY SETTING

Claire & Gareth

17 June 2021

Claire Falzon, 32years, a physiotherapist, and Gareth Galea, 33, a technician, were married in the Church of St Catherine, Zurrieq.

TOGETHER FROM THE START

Claireand Gareth decided to get married after moving to the UK together. Claire was reading for herMaster‘s degree and Gareth really supported herby changing jobs and moving together UK exactly one year after they met. As they both love travelling, nature and the outdoors, they decided on a mini-eurotrip, before moving back to Malta. “During our last stop we were hiking in the Dolomites and that is where Gareth proposed”, Claire remembers.

Claire and Gareth always wanted an outdoor, nature themed wedding so their invitations reflected the outdoor theme and the adventurous aspect of their wedding. They sketched out their idea and asked a friend to finalise the design, which was printed by Papier Plus Studio.

THE BLESSING OF GOOD FRIENDS

The wedding ceremony was celebrated by Fr Antoine Farrugia SDB andthe couple chose the Church of St Catherine in Zurrieq for their service and filled it with friends anda number of Salesian and Franciscan priests with whom they had shared many voluntary work experiences. “Having them all present at such an important sacrament was a true blessing“, they said. Music was provided by old friends they had also shared many voluntary work experiences with. The amazingly talented Cheryl Camilleri, a childhood friend, was their singer. “Since we were kids, I always imagined her to be singing at my wedding. She was accompanied by two other old friends on piano and violin”, Claire explained.

Claire wore a unique wedding dress based on her ideaof a simple dress with coloured flowers. She sketched her idea and was determined to have it made if she didn’t find a dress like it. »

» Mariage were really helpful and understanding. They had something similar but the shape was not really Claire’s style of dress. However,a couple of days later she got a call from them saying a new dress had arrived which fit her description of her dream wedding dress. “Immediately I saw the dress I knew it was it. I tried it on and it fitted perfectly, and it had delicate pink flowers all over”, Claire said, adding that it was exactly the style in which she felt rightfor her. Claire had hand-made flowers put onto the belt, and the flowing bell sleeves, the dress was perfect and exactly as she had imagined it. Her

‘something borrowed’ was jewellery from her mother, and her ‘something blue’ was her pair of new glasses. And for ‘something old’ – her late grandmother’s own wedding shoes, gifted to her by her late grandfather, after her grandmother passed.“I had them restored and wore them for the church celebration”, she added.

Gareth’s outfit was a dark blue, light and comfortable summer suit, bought from Bortex, and his accessories included a bowtie and braces in the family’s tartan which were bought from Scotland, a tribute to the groom’s family heritage. »

I DO 47

» Claire’s bouquet wasbyaward-winning floral designer Anna Zammit. “She was very patient and managed to get the flowers and colours I had requested to tie in with our colour scheme. I wanted Gerberas in my bouquet as I find them fun, summery flowers, and together with pink wax flowers and some roses they made a unique bouquet”, Claire remembered.

The rings, by GB Jewellers, wereengraved with their initials and the dateand carried to the altaron a log slice, by their flower girl.

Transport to church and to the reception venue was with a vintage VW campervan. “These vans have so much character, we both like them and it really tied in with our theme and it was a fun experience to ride in. Maybe one day we will eventually own one ourselves”, the couple said.

A REAL COUNTRY WEDDING

“When we were living in the UK,Gareth treated me to a country wedding fair and we were inspired by the field and barn weddings that they sometimes have.

There and then we decided that we wanted a field wedding ourselves”, Claire explained.

The greatest task was to find a field which fit their dream set up. Then they remembered camping on the Zurrieq Scouts campsite and loving the place. »

48 I DO

» Returning to Malta they contacted the scouts and an agreement was reached that enabled them to use the place for their wedding.

“Both of us had previously organised events be it through volunteering or work, so,despite the difficulties of organising such a big event in a place where no other weddings were held before, we decided to go ahead and make our vision a reality”, they said.

Decorations were transported during the week before the wedding, and the groomsmen helped in setting up of all the decorations on the day of the wedding.

The location itself is really pretty on its own, but lighting and some simple rustic decorations transformed the field into a wonderful venue. Again Anna Zammit provided perfect flowers – a flower arch, creating an entrance, a bunch of flowers decorating a wooden tree-swing, fresh flowers for the cake and a simple arrangement on each table.

The rest of the decorations we created ourselves including a pathway with torch lights leading the guests to the main areawhich was full of tables.Special little decorative touches all around were mason jars and tissue balls on the trees, tree decorations, and the wedding cake table, which was a cable reel that we sanded down ourselves, covered by a white mosquito net hanging from the tree branches above. Our guest book was a painting of a tree, all prepared and painted by the groom himself: it was a tree with the couple’s initials carved on the bark, but without any leaves.Finger paints chosen in line with Claire and Gareth’s colour scheme were set next to so guests could fill it with finger print leaves. “We are now having it framed to hang in our living room”, the couple added.

A tree in the middle of the venue was transformed into a memory tree. It was the only tree with fairylights round the trunk, together

with a message and photos of the groom’s late father, and our grandparents. It was even more special since the lighting was the centre from which the light spread out to the venue. »

» “Arnold from Audio System provided the lighting. He really understood our vision and made it all come to a reality”, they concluded.

THE WEDDING FEAST

Claire and Gareth chose Neriku Catering for their catering, Anne Marie was so helpful! She came for a site visit immediately understood their vision with her suggestionof a finger food menu which complemented the wedding theme. ButCovid changed the original idea, and they had to go with a seated dinner. Neriku stayed flexible to the last few days, and when restrictions were eased the couple could have the carvery table they wanted. “Service and food on the day was impeccable. We received so many positive comments, even from those guests who had special dietary requirements”, they pointed out.

The wedding cake was a Bacio cake, very chocolatey and tasting amazing, was served with coffee at the end so no food or desserts were wasted.

Drinks were provided by Tax-Xorb and served by Neriku. And the VW Kombi Bar served cocktails named after places the couple had visited around the world.

Since most Maltese are not accustomed to a seated wedding, Claire and Gareth wanted to make it as interactive as possible. They putpainted wooden arrows to help their guests reach the location.

Between courses during dinner they spiced things up with small activities.Log cutting saw them cut through a log together using an antique two-handed saw which the groom had bought and sharpened. On it he engraved their motto: Stronger

Together. This symbolised the first obstacle the bride and groom had to overcome together. They managed to cut through, cheered on by the crowd. Guests were involved by standing up while funny statements were read about the couple. Depending on the statement, guests who agreed or disagreed had to sit down, and wereeliminated from the game. The last woman standing was asked to come to join the couple and sing a song with them and rewarded with the bouquet. That way they also found a way to still “toss” the bouquet without creating a crowd of people.

The couple’s first dance was Stand by Me, “which I had choreographed myself, and which Gareth grudgingly learned”. Claire said.

Music was provided by Ben and Jon from The Alchemists followed by Andre Portelli ft. Skarlet. We also had a little surprise from a dear friend, Dana, who joined the band on stage and accompanied them with some beatboxing.

Claire and Gareth want to thank everyone who made their day extra special, all the guests who attended, despite it being on a Thursday, and the suppliers who kept supporting them and did not ask for any extra charges.

The day did passin a blink of an eye. Theunique church celebration with close friends actively participating, the reception, where all the details came together and the guests, surprised by the venue, enjoying the atmosphere and having fun together, made Claire teary eyed. “Because after all the postponements I just couldn’t believe and was so overwhelmed that it was finally happening. Both of us truly enjoyed it”, she remembered.

RENAISSANCE ROMANCE

THE COUPLE

Francesca & Trevor

4 June 2021

Francesca Spiteri, 32 a medical doctor, and Trevor Tabone, 29 also a medical doctor, were married at the Carmelite Priory, Mdina.

A MAGICAL PROPOSAL

Trevor and Francesca met in medical school in 2009,and started dating in their gruelling final year,2014. Fast forward to 2017, at a Coldplay concertin Cardiff, where Trevor randomly decided they should pop over to Florence for a couple of days. For two lovers of art, music and good food it seemed like a great idea to conclude their summer holiday there.

Unknownto Francesca, Trevorwas secretly planning to propose. And at the top of the tower in the beautiful, medieval Hotel Torre Guelfa, on the banks of the Florentine Arno,Trevor knelt down and proposed!

“Obviously, I said yes.I mean not many girls can say they were proposed to on a medieval tower whilst the sun was setting!” Francesca exclaimed.

They celebrated their evening with wine and pizza. And the memories of this magical holiday were to inspire the theme for their wedding– Renaissance Florence, the city of flowers, music, and food.

Francesca sent out simple, classic invitations with a debossed border and foiled initials on a shimmer milk colouration, from Polidano Press.

A TRADITIONAL BAROQUE CHURCH

The couple always loved walking in Mdina and were struck by the Baroque beauty of theCarmelite Priory. It had been closed for restoration but luckily was available for their wedding date. »

I DO 55
56 I DO

» Francesca arrived in a comfortable, elegant Austin Princess. Inside, music from a string quartet, under the direction of Coro Bel Canto, played musical arrangements by Pachelbel, Handel and Bach, the repertoire for the Mass, which was officiated by Mons Emanuel Agius and Father AlexBezzina.

Secret Wedding, from the film Braveheart soundtrack made the couple’s exchange of vows even more romantic. And they alsoexchanged simple gold bands engraved their wedding date and names, by Victor Azzopardi.

CLASSIC FLORAL STYLE

Francesca wanted her wedding gown to be a classic floral style, and began her search in WeddingBells. After trying on three dresses she was still undecided. Then Svetlana pulled a dress that had just arrived. “It was love at first sight, a white off-shoulder dress with floral embellishments”, Francesca remembers. Her sister lent her her own wedding shoes as a good luck charm and a ‘something borrowed’for the special day. Trevor and his groomsmen opted for classic evening tails with a cravat, from Bortex.

Sandro Botticelli’s beautiful Primavera; with Flora the Goddess of Spring wearing a floral crown inspired thecrownsFrancesca and her bridesmaids wore. And their braided hairstyles to complement the crowns were by the immensely talentedMarielle at Brunettes Hair salon. »

I DO 59

» The entire bridal team’s stunning, soft and feminine make up was done by the wonderful Amanda Greaves.

Francesca’s bouquet of roses and peonies for love and good luck, gypsophilia for compassion and sincerity in a classic pink and white palette matchedher floral crown, while the bridesmaids and flower girls had their own, similar bouquets.

FOND FAMILY LINKS

When it came to choosing their reception venue Francesca and Trevor were lucky.

“Both our respective parents coincidentally got married at Villa Arrigo in,Naxxar, and it felt only natural that we continue this tradition and get married in the same venue that brought our parents together, and ultimately - us”, they couple explained.

Due to Covid restrictions this was a seated wedding. So the couple created a magical forest with 33 tables each having a floral arrangement.

Instead of the traditional handwritten guest book there was atransparent wooden post box where guests could post notes written on little hearts. Damian Sant Fournier, the events manager, was extremely helpful in guiding the couple’s selections for a five-course set menu.

Their wedding cake, by OsborneCaterers, was a classic three-tier cake with the traditional almond cake, and the not so traditional Baci flavour for the bottom tier. It too was decorated gyposphilia flowers continuing the beautiful floral theme. »

60 I DO

» And Damian’s cocktails ensuredall their guests were well refreshed throughtout the June, summer evening.

Later all the giggles and stumbles of their practice time paid off for Trevor and Francesca’s first dance. This was to the timeless song In Your Eyes, by Peter Gabriel, from the extremely popular scene with

John Cusack and his boom box in the 1989movie Say Anything, which had a very special meaning for them both.

Music throughout evening was provided by The Busker. While the energetic Rachel Muscat did her best to capture the most special moments – and the end result was magical. »

62 I DO

» Every moment was captured on video by the ever patient Steve Zammit Lupi, the couple remembered.

Trevor and Francesca’s original wedding date was cancelled and every arrangement they made for one a year later was threatened with cancellation. Here’s what they had to say about their wedding journey.

All the wedding suppliers were extremely supportive of the situation and understood the unprecedented situation we were all in.

We decided that whatever happens, even if it meant just us two, we would get married. However, all restrictions were lifted from the 1June, 2021, four days before our actual wedding date and we were overjoyed, albeit cautious due to the fluctuating situation.

The situation took a toll on us, with constant changing restrictions and protocols We both admit that this was probably one of the most stressful situations we had encountered due to all the uncertainty. However, against all odds June 4 dawned bright and clear and we finally were husband and wife.

This would have not been possible if we did not have the backing of our wonderful family and friends, the entire bridal team and groom’s team and our suppliers who went out of their way to accommodate us. This pandemic has shown us that it does not matter if a weeding is seated or standing or how lavish it is but that the couple can celebrate an event of love surrounded by happy and healthy people.

“We never lost hope and it made our love for each other stronger.” –Francesca & Trevor
