Here we are in autumn already, one of the best times of the year for a wedding in the Maltese islands – cooler than summer, plenty of sunshine and longer nights for glittering after parties. It’s also an ‘in between time’ –summer to winter, the wild excitement of a proposal to the longed for wedding day. If you’re engaged, or thinking seriously about it, this issue, with its focus on ways to use the engagement period, has plenty to help you plan for and create your perfect wedding.

SUMMERS END BUT LOVE LASTS FOREVER

On a serious side we look at two important matters that couples could find cropping up in the pre-wedding months; those dealing with trust, and those concerning mutual security and financial issues for the future. And on the fun side Sarah Zerafa has some brilliant ideas for using this time in the best way you can. And, for sure, her ideas are both realistic and romantic. We also have our bridal fashion pages, which were shot in the stunning Sheer Bastion Gran Macina Hotel, somewhere that will definitely put the dream into a dream wedding. And we visit The Inquisitor’s Palace to discover how its remarkable history has made it such a unique and splendid place for wedding celebrations.

“All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” - Helen Keller

Meanwhile, spend your engagement exploring connections with each other’s best friends and families, planning sharing a home together, if you are not already doing so, and looking for new activities to give you even more to share in life as a real, married, couple. ADVICE

IN US WE TRUST LONG OR SHORT, AN ENGAGEMENT IS NOT JUST A DIZZY ROMANTIC INTERLUDE BEFORE MARRIED LIFE. IT HAS A VERY PRACTICAL USE, NOT ONLY AS A TIME FOR COUPLES TO PLAN THEIR WEDDING CELEBRATIONS, BUT ALSO TO TAKE A SERIOUS LOOK AT WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP, NOW THAT THEY ARE MORE THAN SIMPLY ‘AN ITEM’.

D

uring an engagement lots of things may show up which may not have been a big issue before marriage was on the cards, but which could become deal breakers during years of living together. Couples will have their own priorities, all equally import. But one that every couple is concerned with is trust. Trust when you’re married should mean emotional and commitment security. A deeper connection, and the assurance that you will give each other all the support you’ll need when things are not going well. Basically it is this trust that is most important if any marriage is going to survive. But trust issues are delicate. They do not always balance. One person may have a naturally trusting nature, having never had their trust in someone, or something broken. The other‘s experience may be very different, meaning they are less likely to trust anyone completely, at least in the early stages of a relationship. Building trust takes time. It doesn’t just arrive with the wedding rings. There has to be a willingness to trust, and to be shocked at the person who expects to go through their partner’s media pages, or private bank account, or appointment plans.

Simply, the easiest ways of promoting trust is for you both to make it totally clear from the beginning what the most important aspects of being trustworthy are. Trust is also needed for you to establish a balance between the right to know certain things and the wish to protect each other. Breaking confidences, especially to immediate family and friends, and over, or

6 I DO

under, sharing can create problems for a couple, especially if it affects the basic loyalty they expect of each other. Taking time to establish what details of your lives, work, plans and decisions you prefer to keep to yourselves is time well spent. For trust to survive in a marriage you need to respect your equal rights to privacy and to understand and decide, as a couple, which ‘stories’ are yours to tell and which you do not share anyone – family, friends, or on any platform. And, however well you are sure you know each other, never assume that it’s OK to post, speak on behalf of, write or sign anything for your partner. Honestly, even after decades of marriage, especially after decades of marriage, it could go so horribly wrong. Trust also depends on an individual’s self confidence and sense of security. Social media preys on this. So the sooner the hyper-valued importance of likes, followers, etc, is ignored in favour how much the love-of-your-life reacts to you, the better. For a lasting boost to trust in your future decide once and for all that what happened in the past stays in the past. And delete it, physically if you can and mentally for certain. Continuing a previous relationship just out of ‘habit’ or ‘curiosity’, is really immature, especially if either of you have ever had trust issues about fidelity. In some ways establishing trust in a marriage today has a certain advantage. Many couples are getting married much later than a few decades ago. Travelling, achieving a certain career level, or sense of security, or just taking the time to find the right person, now take priority over a mad dash to tie the knot. So, the more experiences a couple have had, even as individuals, the more those experiences will go towards understanding what it takes to trust a person in so many different situations. And when it comes to planning the life you want to spend together trust is quite definitely a very important foundation stone.

THE BRIDES, IN OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF I DO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT. EMILY PACE DELICATA nailed her first ever bridal shoot with her enthusiasm and professionalism. Where do you live? Eighteen years ago I was born and raised on our beautiful island Malta. I have an unwavering love for my country. Its rich history, diverse culture and breathtaking landscapes never fail to evoke a sense of pride within me. The unity of its people, despite their differences, is a testament to the strength of our national spirit. Every corner holds a unique story waiting to be discovered. I am truly grateful to call this country my home, and my love for it only deepens with time, I would not trade it for anything. What is the happiest job or career you could have? I am driven by a strong desire to find a future career that brings me genuine satisfaction through helping others. The thought of making a positive impact on people’s lives, even in the smallest ways, resonates deeply with me. Whether it’s lending a listening ear, offering a helping

hand, or providing guidance, I believe that contributing to the wellbeing of others is a noble and fulfilling endeavor. The idea of being part of something greater, of working towards the betterment of individuals and communities, fuels my sense of purpose and propels me forward in my career journey. The prospect of knowing that my efforts could bring comfort, support, or a brighter future to someone else is the driving force behind my professional aspirations to become a speech therapist. How do you like to relax? Engaging in modeling is my preferred way to unwind and find tranquility. As I delve into the world of creativity and craftsmanship, the process of bringing an idea to life through intricate details and careful manipulation of materials becomes my escape. With each pose and smile, a sense of accomplishment and calm washes over me, providing a therapeutic outlet for self-expression. Through modeling, I find solace, rekindle my imagination, and create a tangible representation of my inner thoughts. It’s a journey of relaxation that brings me joy, enabling me to reconnect with myself and the world around me in a profound way. Who are the people who make you happiest, and for what reason? In the grand mosaic of life, my family and true friends hold the most profound significance. They are my pillars of constant support, my sources of laughter and comfort, and the ones who truly understand and accept me for who I am. What could the world do without, and what does it need more of? I firmly believe that our world craves less selfishness and a greater infusion of unity and peace. By prioritizing collaboration over selfinterest, we can bridge divides and foster understanding among diverse communities. Through collective efforts, we can sow the seeds of a harmonious future, where compassion and cooperation thrive, paving the way for a more compassionate and interconnected world. How do you feel about social media, and what do you mostly use it for? I have a genuine fondness for social media since being a model requires me to have a constant presence on my social platform by posting content I create or videos that I take time to edit in order to collaborate with companies. It is truly impressive how social media has the power to connect people across the globe. However, like any tool, its excessive use can lead to detrimental effects. Therefore, balancing its benefits with mindful moderation is crucial to prevent potential harm to our mental well-being and personal relationships.

ENGAGEMENT

\àËá ãxÄÄ ãÉÜà{ à{x ãt|à4 Even with days of suspense and desperate planning, we discovered from content creator Sarah Zerafa, that engagements bring their own special happiness. Photography | Carlton Aguis AS THE FIRST STEP TO Y OUR ACTUAL WEDDING DAY HOW DID Y OU WANT TO CELEBRATE WITH Y OUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS? ince we got engaged in Paris we couldn’t celebrate that special night with our loved ones. So once we got back to Malta we both made it a point to start organising a fun engagement party where all of our friends and family can get together and celebrate this exciting new chapter. We planned an intimate party, in a gorgeous garden; everything was so magical. We wanted to celebrate our engagement exactly one year before the wedding, and that’s what we did. Our engagement party was held on June 30th, exactly one year from our wedding day. The party was a celebration of our engagement but also the start to a very exciting countdown. It was held at San Martin Wellness Retreat, the most gorgeous setting for a magical party. And with the help of Confetti Crew and Tema it transformed into our dream engagement party venue.

S

SOME ENGAGEMENTS ARE VERY SHORT AND SOME ARE QUITE LONG. ARE Y OU FINDING Y OURS IS A BIT LONG OR DOES IT SEEM TO BE FLY ING BY ? Oh definitely flying by!!! It feels like we got engaged yesterday and are getting married tomorrow, Haha. There’s no other way of explaining it. Time just keeps flying, while we’re trying to plan the biggest day of our lives! Wish I can press a pause button to soak in all of these crazy feelings. People told me that planning a wedding will be the craziest times of your lives and they were definitely not joking, Hehe :) WHAT IMPORTANT THINGS Y OU ARE FITTING INTO THIS PREPARATION TO AND ENSURE ALL Y OUR ARRANGEMENTS GO SMOOTHLY ? AND ARE THERE LOTS OF SURPRISES Y OU WANT TO KEEP SECRET ABOUT THE DAY ? Planning a wedding is stressful and so overwhelming!! To be completely honest I thought I would be able to plan it all by myself. But as the wedding to-do list kept growing and growing I knew it would be absolutely impossible for me to

22 I DO

plan a wedding! After a few meetings we managed to meet our incredible wedding planner, Yanica Marie’ (from TEMA Events), the sweetest most patient (& super creative) person ever. She understood what we wanted and has been helping us out ever since. She keeps us on track and gives us weekly tasks which makes the whole process more organised and more fun, Haha. But I must admit, I drive her crazy at times and she has been nothing but supportive! Regarding to secrets.. OHH YESSS!! Haha :) we have a lot of secrets and fun surprises. Can’t wait for it all! HAVE Y OU GOT LOTS OF SUPPORT, AND CHOSEN Y OUR BRIDAL TEAM AND GROOMSMEN, AND WILL Y OU BE GETTING TOGETHER FOR REHEARSALS? Yes, my bridal team and Dave’s groomsmen have been picked. It was the easiest part of the whole process, Hehe. We can’t imagine our special day without them! I have an incredible man of honour, a super fun bridesman and three gorgeous bridesmaids, while Dave has a super supportive best man (who in fact is my step dad) and four fantastic groomsmen. We’re planning something super fun for them in the coming months. Will let you know all about it in the next issue, Haha! WHAT SPECIAL EVENTS WILL Y OU ALL SHARE BEFORE THE ACTUAL WEDDING DAY ? We have something coming up which Dave and I have been planning for our bridal team and groomsmen – so exciting!! Apart from the wedding we also have to start planning our rehearsal dinner which will take place a few days before the wedding day. HAVE DATE NIGHTS FOR Y OU AND DAVID TURNED INTO PLANNING SESSIONS, OR ARE Y OU CARRY ING ON VERY MUCH AS USUAL? We’re trying to find a good balance Haha. We’re dedicating one whole day a week for wedding talks/meetings/fittings, etc and everything has been going on smoothly TILL NOW HAHA :) This time next year we would already be happily married for four months, probably missing the wedding planning, so might as well enjoy this crazy time now, ’cos I’m sure we will both miss this special time, this time next year!

& COUTURE

Bespoke

Beautiful

Every bride knows what her dream wedding dress looks like and to have it designed and created, just as she imagines it, would be a wish come true. And, honestly, it’s not such a farfetched idea, as we discovered when we talked Jean Claude Farrugia, an up-and-coming designer/couturier/creative director of his own label JEANCLAUDEFARRUGIA, about choosing a custom-made wedding dress. 24 I DO

ARE THERE ADVANTAGES TO HAVING A COUTURE WEDDING DRESS WHICH A BRIDE MAY NOT HAVE THOUGHT OF, THAT MAKE IT EVEN MORE SPECIAL? ertainly, there are benefits to selecting a couture wedding gown that can make for a more memorable bride-to-be. As an upand-coming fashion designer, I’m excited to shed some light on this subject. One of the most significant benefits of opting for a couture wedding dress is the opportunity for complete personalisation. As Atelier JEANCLAUDEFARRUGIA, we work closely with a bride to understand her vision, style and preferences, resulting in a gown that is truly oneof-a-kind. We view this wedding gown as an immediate expression of herself, an extension of the bride’s character. This level of uniqueness ensures that a bride stands out and feels like the most beautiful version of herself on her big day. Our couture gowns are crafted with the utmost attention to detail and the finest materials. The level of craftsmanship that goes into creating these gowns ensures impeccable quality. Not only will the dress look stunning on the wedding day, but it can also serve as a cherished heirloom, passed down through generations. It’s important to note that our couture wedding dresses typically do not strive for adaptability as a primary goal in their creations. Instead, they prioritise luxury, opulence, and the creation of a unique brand and identity for brides. And, what sets Atelier JEANCLAUDEFARRUGIA apart is the ability to seamlessly incorporate versatility into these luxurious creations without compromising their essence. Our couture wedding dresses often seek to embody a certain timelessness. Our designs tend to eschew passing trends and fads. Our view on couture wedding gowns is that they should endure the reminder of a beautiful moment in time. We work closely with our brides to create a bespoke wedding dress. Like this, we can forge a deep emotional connection between the bride and her attire. This connection, in turn, adds a layer of sentimentality to the gown, making it an even more significant part of the wedding day.

C

WHAT, FOR Y OU, IS THE MOST EX CITING AND IMPORTANT PART OF DESIGNING BRIDAL GOWNS OVER OTHER PIECES? For the Atelier, the strong emotional significance that these gowns hold is the most enthralling aspect of designing couture bridal gowns. They are more than simple garments; they represent one of the most precious and unforgettable occasions in a person’s life. This profound emotional bond between the bride and her gown is unrivalled in the fashion world.

Designing a bridal gown entails becoming a part of a bride’s journey to realise her aspirations and showcase her distinct personality on her wedding day. It’s an honour to work with brides to grasp their vision and translate it into a one-of-a kind gown that expresses their uniqueness and love story. As a designer, this process requires a level of trust and closeness that is extremely rewarding. Additionally, bridal gowns allow me to reach new heights of artistry and inventiveness. The use and manipulation of sumptuous fabrics contribute to the artistry of wedding design. Creating a gown that not only fits immaculately but also expresses the bride’s emotions is a challenge that I find both exhilarating and immensely satisfying. Creating bridal gowns is ultimately about creating a work of art that holds a lifetime of emotions and memories. It’s a one-of-a-kind and beautiful adventure that I’m honoured to be a part of as a fashion designer. WHAT ARE THE FIRST THINGS Y OU LIKE TO DISCUSS WITH A BRIDE WHO ASKS Y OU TO DESIGN HER WEDDING DRESS? WHAT PARTICULAR DESIGN FEATURES WOULD Y OU ADVISE HER TO INCLUDE? The first interactions with a bride are crucial because they lay the groundwork for the entire design process. The goal is to design a wedding gown that not only meets but surpasses her expectations, while encapsulating her effervescence. There are several key aspects discussed to achieve the final product. It is crucial to understand each bride. We inquire about her daily fashion preferences and any dress styles she has in mind. This helps me formulate her tastes and preferences and how these can accentuate her best features while ensuring comfort. We discuss her body type, any concerns, and how she envisions herself feeling in the gown. Additionally, it is imperative to consider the overall theme and setting of the wedding. Whether it’s a beachside destination wedding, or a classic ballroom affair, the dress should harmonise with the ambiance. All this, while keeping in mind the bride’s financial plan and timeline. Atelier JEANCLAUDEFARRUGIA does not impose features. The vision for the dress is worked holistically alongside the previously mentioned points. The objective is to lend my creative fervor and meet the bride’s expectations while keeping in theme with the Atelier’s philosophy that the union between the wearer and the gown makes the bride. HOW DO Y OU HELP A BRIDE CHOOSE THE STY LE AND FABRIC FOR HER DRESS? As previously mentioned, we like aiding the bride through our inquiring nature. We almost try obtaining information from the bride herself and help through discussion where required. We advise brides to consider some important aspects of the couture bridal gown. The dress silhouette plays a major role in establishing the overall image. A-line, mermaid, ball gown – I advise brides on the best silhouette for their body form and the wedding theme. Lace, silk, satin and tulle all have different textures and looks. The fabric used can have a significant impact on the feel and appearance of the gown. But we also remind our clients that all materials can be manipulated, which is something this studio is known for. We discuss embellishments such as beading, embroidery, or lace appliqués based on the bride’s preferences. These accents can add a luxurious touch to the gown. Personal style can be seen in the neckline and back design. Brides may opt for a classic sweetheart neckline, an elegant illusion back, or something entirely unique. And, when it comes to colour, while white is the traditional colour, brides today are increasingly interested in minor variants such as ivory, blush, or champagne. We explore these possibilities to find the ideal colour. In essence, these conversations allow me to delve into the bride’s vision, ensuring that the gown I design reflects her own personality and style while sticking to practical issues. It’s a

collaborative process that results in a wedding gown that genuinely epitomises the bride’s aura and fantasies. DO Y OU EVER NEED TO BALANCE A DESIGN BETWEEN WHAT Y OU AND THE BRIDE ARE THINKING AND WHAT HER MOTHER, OR OTHERS, MAY HAVE IN MIND? Balancing the design vision between the bride and other influential individuals, can be a delicate but necessary aspect of the design process. I urge an open and honest communication with the bride and the other key decision-makers. Everyone’s viewpoint is vital, and it is critical to comprehend their goals and concerns. Often, we can find middle ground through compromise and collaboration, or provide information and guidance. Ultimately, it’s the bride’s day, and her comfort and happiness are my top priorities. I make certain that her vision is kept at the centre of the design process. I ask her specific questions about which components of the design are most important to her so that we can concentrate on those, and where required private consultations are held to stay true to her vision. DO ANY PARTICULAR PERIODS OR CHARACTERS, REAL OR FICTIONAL INSPIRE Y OU, EVEN SLIGHTLY , WHEN Y OU START ON A WEDDING DRESS? When I begin the creative path of designing a wedding gown, I am inspired by a diverse range of times and characters. The golden age of the silver screen and the timeless allure of the Italian lifestyle are among my sources of inspiration. These eras create a feeling of beauty, refinement, and romanticism that brides and I share. It’s crucial to note, however, that while these influences provide a starting point, they have no control over the end of my creative process. Every bride is different, and my main goal is to translate her distinct vision and personality into a gown that embodies her dreams. I combine these ideas with the bride’s choices, the wedding theme, and practical considerations to create a wedding gown that truly reflects her style and story. Ultimately, the synthesis of these varied inspirations enables me to create something completely unique and personalised to the bride’s wants, transforming her wedding day into a cinematic masterpiece. FINALLY , Y OU ARE RELATIVELY NEW TO THE SCENE, SO WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF Y OUR CAREER SO FAR? While I am fresh to the fashion industry, I am extremely proud of the milestones and experiences that have defined my path. One of the highlights of this year has been the introduction of our brand’s second collection. It’s been a labour of love, and I’m overjoyed to see it realised. One of the delights has been the opportunity to display this collection in some spectacular venues. We had the honour of showing our designs in Rome, Malta, and Paterno, all of which offered the ideal setting for our vision. These venues provided a richness and authenticity to our work, and the reaction from the fashion community and our clients has been overwhelmingly positive. Another important accomplishment for me was the opportunity to shoot a campaign in the breathtakingly beautiful city of Rome. It was an unforgettable experience, and I’m proud of how the photographs caught our brand’s soul. We aimed for a sense of timeless beauty, and I believe we succeeded. Moreover, I am committed to fostering inclusion in the fashion industry. When we exhibited our collection with a diverse cast of models, it was a special moment for me. Diversity is important to our brand’s vision, and it was a pleasure to witness a broad selection of models grace the runway and bring our designs to life. Finally, clothing my best friend and future bride, Sarah Zerafa, for her engagement shoot was one of the most intimate and moving experiences. It was an honour to be entrusted with such a crucial event in her life.

For better and for worse

Nobody goes into marriage expecting things won't turn out happily ever after.

S

o, while the engagement period is mainly filled with exciting preparations for a wedding it is also wise to use the time to consider its future consequences, however idyllic these are now. For most of us a prenuptial agreement is something we only hear about when a celebrity marriage comes unstuck and the acrimonious arguments over who gets what spill all over the media for as long as people remain interested. But a prenup is not only for the ‘rich and famous’. It is custom made and legally enforceable. And, as a couple’s circumstances are bound to change in the course of their marriage, it may prove as useful when things go well as when they may not. It is about peace of mind, not just for a couple, but also their families, because it makes certain that all their finances and possessions will end up where they should, whatever happens, without a whole lot of unpleasant haggling. Should we have a prenup? is a question mature couples, who are truly ready to commit to each other, should all be asking. A couple discussing a prenup from a purely practical position, and without any conditions, are really doing themselves a favour, because they will be ensuring confidential protection, a security blanket if you like, for their future. One thing a prenup will not do is spook your relationship. Nor is it meant to test your trust in one another. If anything it indicates that you both love and care for each other enough to prepare for any eventuality in a way that protects all your interests.

IS THIS YOU? Here are some reasons a couple could benefit from a prenup: • When one party is significantly wealthier than the other • When one or both parties have children from a previous relationship • If either party has a loan or debt from before the marriage • To protect their children’s interest • To protect your respective property and future assets – held individually or jointly.

All girls together Brides maids, maids of honour, anyone who has been part of a bridal party knows the excitement of getting ready on a wedding day.

W

hile, for them, the engagement period goes from receiving a bridesmaids proposal gift, and rehearsals to trying out different looks and fitting dresses, this is a special time for getting together before everyone appears in their gorgeous glory at the ceremony, then sparkles and shines at the celebration. It is important to create the best vibe and make sure the team are all in it together. And someone who certainly has a way to do this is Eva Galea Sammut. Here she explains her concept and introduces her own clothing line, designed to bring glamour and fun to the dressing room. Recommended many times on Bride.com http://bride.com/ the Leila Rose Romper is the perfect choice for a bride who wants to stand out in something original, elegant, feminine and yet flirty, ideal for herself and her bridal party on her very special day. Our elegant rompers are crafted locally, using exclusively high-quality satin which is not excessively shiny, unlike most bridal getting-ready wear. This, I believe, is the key to achieving a smart, superior look. The design falls smoothly over the body. It is trimmed with ruffles, including a feminine ruffled hemline which makes it incredibly flattering for every body shape. The deep v-neckline is perfect for getting in and out of, after your hair and make-up has been done, smudge free. The romper is available in a variety of colours and features an elasticated waistband for comfort so you can relax and lounge around in total bliss. Choosing these rompers will allow you to get ready easily while looking a million dollars. They are also more practical than robes as they don’t fall open or come loose like a robe can. These are chic, feminine and comfortable rompers, perfect for weddings, bachelorette parties, honeymoons or simply lounging around on vacation. Everyone will love them! https://leilarosestudio.etsy.com/

LOVE Everlasting

For this special engagement themed issue Lee Satariano, one of Malta’s most prominent diamond experts discusses choosing an engagement ring.

CHOOSING YOUR RING

W

hen couples embark on the journey of choosing quality stones for an engagement ring, our approach is comprehensive and tailored to their unique preferences. We begin by guiding them through the 4Cs: Carat, Cut, Colour, and Clarity. We not only explain what each of these components entails but also delve into the importance of these factors in detail. Certification is a crucial part of our discussion, where we emphasise the significance of a reputable certification like the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). We cover why having a certified stone is essential, as it provides a reliable and objective assessment of the stone’s quality. When it comes to stone sizes and prices, we present a range of options, ensuring that couples are aware of various possibilities while maintaining a commitment to high-quality standards across all choices. We explore various cuts, settings, and design options so that couples have the flexibility between choosing a more personalised bespoke ring, or selecting from our carefully curated ready-made collection. This flexibility ensures that every couple can find a ring that not only meets their desires but also beautifully symbolises their unique love story. CHANGING TRENDS AND STY LES The current trends in engagement rings reflect a blend of tradition and evolving preferences. While diamonds continue to be the most frequently requested precious stone, there is a noticeable shift towards more customised and personalised designs. Couples are increasingly interested in engagement rings that not only align with their unique style but also serve as a lasting investment. Traditional styles like solitaires and trilogy rings remain popular choices among those seeking a timeless and classic aesthetic. However, the surge in interest for bespoke pieces is a noteworthy trend –this allows couples to have engagement rings that are truly one-of-a-kind, reflecting their individuality and the story of their relationship. Our role is to provide guidance based on our expertise while honouring their specific preferences and desires. Another emerging trend is the growing preference for bi-colour bands and diamond bands. These styles offer a modern twist on the traditional engagement ring, incorporating unique metalwork and additional diamonds. In terms of gemstone choices, pink and blue sapphires and emeralds are gaining popularity, particularly in traditional cluster ring styles. These colourful gemstones add a touch of vibrancy and individuality to engagement rings, making them stand out from more conventional options. CHOOSING A CUSTOM MADE RING If budget allows, I encourage couples to consider a custom-made engagement ring for such a special occasion. Opting for a bespoke piece adds an extra layer of significance and personalisation to the ring, making it a truly memorable experience. When assisting couples in their choice of stone and design again, our approach is structured and comprehensive; explaining the 4Cs, as above to determine the overall quality and value of a gemstone. Drawing from over 30 years of experience in the industry, we have a deep understanding of which stones retain their value and can provide valuable insights to our clients during this stage. Once we’ve identified the ideal stone, we begin a personalised design

process involving sharing visual representations and design concepts with each client. By utilising detailed sketches, 3D renderings and even physical settings, we ensure that they can visualise their dream piece and make informed decisions about the design elements they prefer. This collaborative approach ensures that the final ring aligns perfectly with their vision and preferences. Timing is also an important consideration in the custom design process. I typically recommend that clients start the process several weeks before they plan to propose. This timeline allows for thorough design discussions and revisions if needed. Once the design is confirmed, the actual crafting of the ring takes approximately three to four weeks to ensure the highest quality. For clients choosing from our existing collection, the setting process is quicker, typically taking two to three days before the ring is ready for collection. A JOINT CHOICE OR A PROPOSAL SURPRISE? When it comes to choosing a surprise engagement ring that will eventually need to match a certain style of wedding ring, there are several considerations to keep in mind. It’s advisable to lean towards a timeless and classic design for the engagement ring. This ensures that the ring will maintain its elegance and relevance over the years, whilst also allowing it to harmonise effortlessly with the wedding ring. While the element of surprise is undoubtedly special, it’s also practical to gather input from close friends or family members who may have insights into your partner’s style and preferences. This way, you can select a design that aligns with their taste while still maintaining the surprise element. In some cases, couples opt to choose the engagement ring together. This collaborative approach can be a wonderful way to ensure that both the engagement and wedding rings match seamlessly in style. It’s essential that the wedding ring complements the engagement ring rather than outshining it. To achieve this, a plain wedding ring is often recommended. Its simplicity can serve as a beautiful backdrop for the engagement ring, allowing it to shine as the focal point.

FROM DARK DAYS TO BRIGHT FUTURES

F

ew of Malta’s many historic buildings have quite the brooding history of the Inquisitor’s Palace with the sinister associations is has collected over the centuries. The Holy Roman Inquisition dominated Malta for over 224 years and the Inquisitor’s Palace was the seat of the Maltese Inquisition from 1574 to 1798. It has held tribunals, imprisoned inmates from all walks of life and been a place of torture. But it was also a grand theatre of lavish interiors, fit for the Pope’s representative as vested by the inquisitor who did his best to impress his distinguished guests. In later years the palace also served as a military hospital, a mess hall and a makeshift church and convent in post-war years. This history, which deserves a feature of its own, creates the amazing atmosphere that fills the Palace. Senses of reverence, mystery, almost awe, give it a beautiful, original and, indeed, romantic aura. The Inquisitor’s Palace has earned its current role as a perfect setting for so many of the Maltese Islands‘ most precious treasures, and a venue for the most joyful celebrations. Architecturally it is a gem, offering completely different aspects to suit both small weddings and larger ones either indoors, or in the charming courtyard or pretty garden which still seems to be set in the 16th century. Here are some details to help you choose the one for you.

32 I DO

THE CASTELLANIA COURTY ARD, with its robust columns and iconic quadripartite vaults is a stunning example of late medieval architecture. With 50 guests standing, or 20 seated for dinner, clever lighting and well-placed floral decorations will make this intriguing inner courtyard a perfect setting for a marriage ceremony and intimate celebration party. There are kitchen amenities, toilets and wheelchair accessibility. THE CARDINALS’ HALL, as is to be expected, is an elegant tribute to the 22 inquisitors who were subsequently recalled to Rome and proclaimed cardinals. Recently authentically refurbished this splendid room on the top floor of the palace will provide all the romance and history you could hope for. There is full air-conditioning and the usual facilities, for 120 guests standing and tables and chairs for 50 seated diners. There is also street parking but no wheel-chair access. INQUISITOR’S PALACE GARDEN, an exquisite Baroque garden, has been here since the 1630s, only to be refashioned in 1733. Just imagine this as your romantic setting for your special day. A small family wedding, up to 50, will be an even more significant celebration in this very historic venue. The usual amenities are available, including wheelchair access.

I DO 7

Some helpful points All three of the above areas are licensed for civil wedding ceremonies and wedding celebrations, with everyone drifting easily from one to the other.

◊ Heritage Malta exclusive venue will provide their own catering, either reception or seated dinner, or a couple can opt for their own catering services.

◊ Catering is allowed in the designated areas shortlisted through the exclusive venues platform.

◊ If a ceremony, even one that is not followed by a celebration, is not held inside the hall, it is preferable that the wedding is held when the museum is closed to the public. That is from 17.30hrs.

AND FINALLY These very special venues are priceless Maltese treasures. They are historic and irreplaceable and stand for more than a present-day building dares hope for. For this reason fireworks and confetti are prohibited. Sound is permitted up to 23.00hrs. And music needs to be either instrumental or a singer, but not a disco. Look online or contact Heritage Malta exclusive venues on 2295 4300 or just visit and discover the Inquisitor’s Palace’s transformation for yourselves.

THE COUPLE

Marisabelle & Charles 1 May 2022 Marisabelle Zahra Bonnici – 37, a pharmacist now heading marketing and events for TheMaltaFlorist, and Charles Zahra, 35 Agronomist, flower grower and director at TheMaltaFlorist, were married in Attard Parish Church. AN UNCONVENTIONAL PROPOSAL arisabelle and Charles had been together for three and a half years. “From the moment we met we both had a very special connection. We laugh and have so much fun together but we also work hard together – we built a business, opened a shop and launched a website together“, Marisabelle explained. On her birthday every year Charles makes her a bouquet with flowers he is growing at the time. “On 7, July 2020 however he prepared a bridal bouquet for me with flowers all grown by him. He got down on one knee and presented me with a bridal bouquet and asked if I would marry him“, she continued, adding that the ring came later, in their case, as the show stopper was the flowers. Their wedding theme, of course, was flowers. Special invitations, by Polidano Press, were flowered, and they made souvenirs from flowers they had grown and grew and dried themselves.

M

THE PERFECT CEREMONY The church was the first thing the couple booked. Marisabelle grew up in Attard and always loved its church. “The priest who married us, Father Dione Cutajar, has known me since I was a teenager and is a family friend. He made our ceremony so special. His words made us laugh and cry at the same time as it was so personal. He even involved our parents and asked them to join him on the altar to bless our marriage”, she said. Outside the church the flower arrangements were by TheMaltaFlorist. Connie Scerri who has worked there with the couple in the past offered to do the interior church flowers for them so they didn’t need to worry about them and she did a great job. ELEGANCE AND SIMPLICITY Marisabelle always knew that she wanted her dress to be simple and silk. »

I DO 41

» At Eva Mariee, she found what she had in mind. “I always heard other women say when you try on the dress you know immediately and I was not convinced this was true, but they were so right“, she said. Having tried on six or seven dresses, she knew as soon as she saw it that the second dress was the only one for her. Her jewellery she wore for the day was a gift from her parents – diamonds and emeralds, and the brooch on her dress belonged to her late grandmother, and was gifted to her on her wedding day by her father. Her hair was beautifully styled by head & jam team. Marisabelle’s bouquet was everything she asked for. Colourful: “Because I love colour so the wedding flowers reflected my love for bright colours”, and asymmetrical: “Because I have never been a girl who fits in and I love that about myself”, she explained.

Meanwhile her bridesmaids carried floral clutch bags and wore beautiful bridal sets of turquoise or rose crystals, by Sarah Gauci. Charles chose a charcoal grey suit, from Natasha’s, which looked elegant as soon as he tried it on. For the rings they exchanged Marisabelle’s matched her engagement ring whilst Charles’s ring had belonged to her father. IN A SEA OF FLOWERS The couple chose Xara Lodge for their venue because it was ideal for the floral show they wanted to create celebrating their story together using four floral installations. The first was a 2 x 2- metre heart made of flowers, inspired by a heart made of red roses at a fair they attended on their first trip to Holland together. »

I DO 43

» Charles loved and it and said if he ever got married he would want to have a heart made of roses at his wedding. “A few hours after he proposed he mentioned it again, so of course it had to be the first installation at our wedding. It represented the start of our journey together”, Marisabelle explained. The second installation represented how their relationship bloomed and flourished and how they made each other better because it was overflowing with love. It contained many flowers grown by Charles, but also Protea, a flower they both love and bonded over when visiting a flower grower fair in Alsmeer. So it was fitting to include it in their wedding. But it needs volcanic soil to grow, so they are researching ways to grow it themselves, In the main room were four flower pillars all using flowers grown by Charles and representing the pillars the couple’s relationship is based on, together with their cake. Finally a dried flower installation, which can last forever, represented the future – bright, colourful, innovative and fun but very sturdy and solid at the same time. Xara Lodge staff, especially Jonathan, took great care of them on the day and before, including catering all the food and beverages. They had a mix of amazing canapés, pasta table, a BBQ and sweet table. Everything was perfect and everyone was so happy with the food. The cake was also made by Xara. “We had a seven-tier cake simply because we wanted to decorate it with flowers”, the couple added. They created a photo backdrop themselves, a dried flower installation using a lovely sofa provided by Casa Pinta. Two types of music, first the string quartet, Cordia, representing Marisabelle’s love of music, then Red Electric played an amazing set. Their first dance was Lucky by Jason Mraz, choreographed by Raisa Carabott from Wedding Dance Malta. “We had so much fun practising and dancing on the day thanks to Raisa”, they said. GREAT TEAM WORK By taking care of all the décor and flowers themselves Marisabelle and Charles knew they would have their ideal celebration. »

» But they are quick to credit friends and family who, by working till the 11th hour, helped make this happen. “We were a team of 12 florists, together with some good friends who volunteered to help”, they said. Also included are Marisabelle’s mum and sister-in-law, who helped with souvenirs, her dad and brothers, Charles dad, brother and cousin, and some really dear friends who helped transport flowers and set up. And Marisabelle also managed to solve her biggest worry which was not being able to find shoes in the size and fitting she takes, in Malta. She found Shoenvious online and her customised bridal shoes, in her favourite shade of green, fitted like a glove.

ROSES AND ROMANCE They wanted to give their wedding a soft pastel romantic look so they chose dusty rose as the main colour for the wedding. This was the colour chosen for the bridal team dresses and accessories, the wedding cake, flowers and ambient lights and accessories decorating the venue. »

A SPECIAL CEREMONY Antoine and Maria originally planned to get married at the groom’s local church, but it was booked years in advance. It was a simple dress, ivory white in colour with a beaded top and was complimented by a long, lace wedding veil and exquisite silver jewellery by Sarah Gauci. She carried a bouquet by Anna Zammit, comprising white and pink roses, to go with the dusty rose theme of the wedding. Antoine wore a navy blue suit with a waistcoat and bow tie. » The couple exchanged carefully chosen rings. Maria’s complimenting her engagement ring and Antoine’s a more traditional gold ring with the date and the bride’s name inscribed inside. A VENUE WITH A VIEW Maria and Antoine chose the magnificent Villa Bighi, in Kalkara, especially because of its stunning views of the Grand Harbour and Valletta. It was decorated by A&S, and the weather was perfect during the evening, with a nice breeze. All guests were complementary about the food which was served continuously during the wedding. They also ordered donut bags for guests to take home with them. Their wedding

cake was a three-tier hanging cake, also in the dusty pink theme colour and adorned with fresh flowers. There was a photo booth where for guests to stick their photos in the guest book and write their wishes, and a cocktail bar which went very well with the guests. For their first dance Maria and Antoine wanted a Maltese song, and given that as entertainers they had The Travellers they opted for their song Ziffa ta Rih. And, for a few weeks before the wedding they also took some dancing lessons for the choreography. “In terms of entertainment, we first had a one hour acoustic session performed by Kevin Paul Calleja, then we had a four hour session by the Travellers and we closed the wedding with a traditional march by Tikka Banda”, they concluded.

SPECIAL MEMORIES “After the church, we decided not to opt for the usual ride back to the venue, but we walked from the church to the Upper Barrakka Gardens where we took some photos, then we took a traditional talpass boat from Valletta to Birgu, and then from Birgu to the venue by car. We and the bridal and groom’s teams who joined us will definitely not forget it”, they remembered. Antoine and Maria planned their wedding themselves to the last detail with the support of their parents and family. “But we wanted them and the bridal and groom’s teams to enjoy the day and thus decided to have a wedding planner for the day”, they explained.

THE COUPLE

Stephanie & Clayton 24 June 2023 Stephanie Davies, 29, a director, and Clayton Borg, 28, an operations manager, were married at Sant’Anna Church, Zebbiegh.

A SURPRISE PROPOSAL tephanie and Clayton were always talked about their future –getting married and building a family, and on June 20, three years ago, Clayton proposed. It was during Covid so he could not plan as much as he wanted to, but he planned a simple yet special proposal. On Father’s Day their family and close friends gathered for a BBQ at Clayton’s parents’ internal yard, in the same building as their apartment which was still in shell form. “Without me noticing, they decorated the apartment for the proposal. I was blindfolded and they walked me up the stairs to the apartment, to find Clayton on one knee with rose petals on the floor and balloons”, said Stephanie.

S

AN ENVIRONMENTAL TOUCH Rather than have a theme for their wedding the couple went for more of a party vibe as they had a young crowd. And they decided to be environmentally friendly when it came to the wedding invitations. “We created a digital invitation and sent it to our guests electronically. We only printed a couple of invitations for those that we couldn’t send to digitally. As for the souvenirs, we found an affordable and useful gift for our guests. It was bottle opener in the shape of a key. Attached to it we had a quote printed and some perlini”, they explained. A CEREMONY TO REMEMBER Stephanie and Clayton chose Sant’Anna Church, because it was near Mgarr which is very close to their hearts, and the church itself is modern and not as big as other parish churches. They each chose a special car to arrive in. The bridal car was a 1957 Chevy Bel Air and the groom’s a White Camaro. The church was decorated with flowers on the alter and small arrangements by the benches, and Zone Five’s Amber sang Ave Maria as Stephanie walked up the aisle, with first her mother then her grandfather. »

I DO 55

» Obviously the ceremony was one to remember, the couple pointed out. “We met the priest at a Ta’ Kana course and we instantly felt a connection. We started to meet up with him to get to know each other more and he prepared us for married life. The homily was personalised based on our life and all the guests who attended the ceremony enjoyed listening to the priest’s speech”, they said, adding that they made the ceremony more special by including their own personal vows right after getting married. Stephanie’s wedding dress, from WeddingBells, was an A-line princess dress. She had the off the shoulder straps altered to normal ones which she preferred. “As I had a fancy, sparkly head band I decided to go minimal on jewellery. I had stud earrings and a dainty bracelet”, she explained Clayton’s suit was a sky blue three-piece. The colour suited a summer look and the fabric was light, he also chose Maltese Cross cufflinks. The groomsmen and male family members chose a different shade of blue, so the groom would stand out. Stephanie wanted white and light pink roses for her bouquet, with not too much greenery. It was created by Julie Lupi and looked very elegant and neat. They both had white gold rings inscribed with their initials and date of their marriage, but Stephanie’s also included five diamonds. MUSIC AND DANCING For their reception Stephanie and Clayton wanted a modern venue that had indoor and outdoor space, without a pool in the middle, so all their guests were not scattered around. They decided Giardini Lambrosa was just right. When choosing Giardini Lambrosa as a venue it is compulsory to use Elia caterers but the couple made sure to point out: “We were not disappointed!” They had a simple cake; three white tiers with clear acrylic separators between tiers and fresh flowers on each tier. Before cutting the wedding cake, they had a surprise birthday cake for one of the groomsmen. »

56 I DO

» As they are not good dancers Stephanie and Clayton decided not to have a professional choreographer for their first dance as it would look forced, instead they just planned some moves that they felt capable of doing. “We chose a song in Maltese Jekkmhuxint, the lyrics relates to our relationship which made it easier to sing throughout the dance and mean every word”, they said. There were also two separate songs: Falling In Love With You – a dance dedicated to the grandparents and You Raise Me Up – a dance dedicated to both their mothers. Then the band started and all the guests went wild and danced all night long, while Ders Wedding Films videographers captured the fun. And when they did need a breather they could enjoy the cocktail bar, writing date night ideas, or signing the football/ basketball. AND SPECIAL THANKS TO... Bridesmaids and groomsmen: All of them knew their small tasks they had to take care of on the day. “They made sure that both of us were enjoying the day and most importantly got us drinks”, said the couple. And their wedding planner Katia Gatt – KG events, for supporting each idea Stephanie and Clayton had, making sure they chose trustworthy suppliers who were within their budget, and taking a load off their minds by reassuring them everything was under control when they got stressed “On the day everything went as planned and we had the best day of our lives”, they confirmed.

Michela & Kieran 18 June 2022 Michela Catania, 28, a primary school teacher, and Kieran Flint, a bank team leader were married in San Lawrenz Parish Church, Vittoriosa. CRUISE TO ROMANCE ichela and Kieran met way back in 2016 in a hot tub on a cruise ship MSC Preziosa. Michela had just graduated from university and was on her graduation holiday and Kieran was aboard on a lads’ trip. “He is from England, whilst I’m from Malta. We had a long distance relationship for one year and then he decided to move to Malta. We moved in together and dated for two years. We always talked about marriage and about having a family. Both of us come from big families and we loved the idea of having our own. Then in 2018 he proposed in Parco Sempione Park in Milan after asking for my parents’ permission. It was very sweet and romantic”, Michela remembers. The couple spent almost four years planning their wedding and did a lot of research. “We knew exactly what we wanted. We wanted to invite close friends and family. We both opted for a romantic/boho-themed wedding with a big bridal and groom’s team”, they said. »

» IN A CHURCH BY THE SEA Because many of their guests were coming from abroad Michela and Kieran wanted a church that was close to their venue. So their natural choice was San Lawrenz Parish church, Vittoriosa, which is beautiful inside and out. Michela wore a dress that was completely the opposite of how she thought her wedding dress would be. “I always imagined myself getting married in a mermaid dress. However, one day I was in Valletta with mum when she wanted me to try a wedding dress”, she explained. At WeddingBells she fell in love with the first dress she had ever tried. Wanting to see more dresses, she tried on over 10 dresses. “However, I kept thinking about the first one. Eventually I went back for it. To make it even more special, the dress was named after my late grandma. That for me was a sign that indeed it was my wedding dress”, she decided. For jewellery Michela kept it simple, wearing only a pair of Alencia earrings which her parents bought her for the occasion, and a two-piece hair band.

62 I DO

Kieran knew what colour his suit should be and found the one he wanted at Cefai’s formal wear. For her bouquet Michela chose roses and eucalyptus especially but left the rest to the florist who did a wonderful job! The bridesmaids bouquets where similar. When it came to their rings they both went for something nontraditional. Michela had a diamond ring personalised to match her engagement ring, whilst Kieran opted for a ring made out of tungsten. SHEER PERFECTION For Michela and Kieran: “An evening, summer wedding was a must, and for location we always wanted somewhere with a view. That is why we chose the Sheer Bastion, as for us it ticked all of boxes”, they explained. And they even rented boats for all their guests to cross over to the venue. »

“We wanted a simple, romantic wedding surrounded by our close friends and family and that is what we had” – Michela & Kieran

» Michela was eager to decorate the venue to make it our own. “I love the romantic feeling fairy lights make so I made sure to have them at the wedding. We also had a flower arch and a flower wall which guests could take photos against”, she added. Catering was provided by the venue itself. Knowing that Maltese weddings need good food the couple choose a variety of items to cater for all dietary requirements, including parmigiano, a pasta station and a chocolate and cigar table. They also had after party food which their guests loved, including fish and chips. Being not really into tradition, Kieran and Michela didn’t want the usual almond cake, neither of them like it, but they wanted to have a bite of their wedding cake. So they decided to go for a vanilla and chocolate three-tier wedding cake. And for the all important good entertainment they opted for Ozzy Lino and Band for the first few hours of the reception, followed by DJ for the after party. “Kieran and I danced all night and even our guests. The dance floor was always full of people. During the after party a lot of 90s’ and noughties’ music was played. For our first

dance we chose If I Ain’t Got You, by Alicia Keys”, Michela remembers. A VISION BROUGHT TO LIFE It was very important to Michela and Kieran that their wedding was very personal and that their guests really enjoyed their celebration. To make sure their souvenirs something that would actually be used, they went for Gozitan honey, which the guests did love. And Michela also made personalised biscuits herself as wedding favours to add her own extra special touch. “Both our family and friends were very supportive. My mum and dad were there every step of the way and for that we are truly grateful. Everything was exactly how we imagined it to be. We couldn’t believe that after years of planning our vision came to life. My favourite part of the day was realising that our dream has finally become reality. Seeing all 250 of our friends and family celebrating with us was the best feeling ever”, the couple concluded.
