elcome to the winter edition of I Do Magazine, it’s our last edition for this year. I cannot believe another year has gone by. For this special winter edition, we came up with an issue packed with fun, inspiring topics for this upcoming season. We have a white winter photo shoot, featuring modern wedding gowns and grooms’ wear, shot in the most spectacular Heritage Malta venue of the Inquisitor’s Palace, in Birgu. We wanted to create a contrast between modern styles with an ancient backdrop. The result is spectacular you can have a look for yourself starting on page 16.
MOOD BOARD
MY KIND OF WINTER WEDDING
Some of my favourite items for a winter wedding.
For the honeymoon section, we explored two dream getaways to inspire you for a winter honeymoon. I am sure you will want to book your flight tickets as soon as you read the article. You can do this while sampling some of the winter cocktails featured on page 15, before serving them at your pre-wedding party or the wedding reception itself. The inspiration page, which is one of my favourite features, is about various ideas for wedding favours, featuring also some local vendors’ ideas. Happiness is also one of my favourite topics, everyone wants to be happy I guess. And Ms Pauline Bondin came up with the topic about happiness in marriage. It’s the secret for a successful marriage. One thing I learnt from when my husband and I attended the Cana movement courses is that if you always give to your spouse and not expect anything in return, you will for sure live a happy marriage if, of course, your better half adopts the same technique. Like this, you are always giving but always receiving as well. It’s not easy but one can always start by trying.
“My heart is like a singing bird” - Christina Rossetti
Another five lovely couples chose to share their special day with us and we are honoured to share their love stories with you all. I hope you enjoy browsing through this edition as much as we enjoyed working on it. Until next time take care and do get in contact if you would like your wedding to be featured in I DO Magazine Lots of love,

WORDS FROM THE EXPERT
Happiness in Marriage
I
n his book Authentic Happiness, psychologist Martin Seligman states: “Marriage is strongly related to happiness. Marriage works remarkably well from a Positive Psychology point of view. Perhaps the single most robust fact about marriage, across many surveys is that married people are happier than anyone else. Of married adults 40 percent call themselves very happy, while only 23 percent of never-marrieds do. This is true of every ethnic group studied, and it is true across the 17 nations that psychologists have surveyed.” - Authentic Happiness, Free Press, New York, pages 186, 187
It’s not just marriage itself that brings the benefit of happiness. It must be a harmonious, loving relationship to derive maximum value. The opinions of all those studying happiness are consistent – a good marriage is a direct path to well-being. Happiness is a combination of how satisfied we are with our lives and how good we feel on a dayto- day basis. To gauge happiness, researchers asked married couples to rate their satisfaction with things like the support of their spouse, the affection in the marriage and their sex life. The team found that happiness declines in the first years of marriage, as the flush of newly-wed life gives way to day-to-day frustrations and realities. Happiness in marriage doesn’t mean you have the perfect
8 I DO
spouse or a perfect marriage. It simply means you have chosen to look beyond the imperfections in both.
Conflict is a normal part of marriage. No matter how much you and your spouse love each other you won’t see eye-to-eye on everything. Having the occasional argument doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong with your marriage. Healthy conflict resolution is a skill that anyone can learn. You can solve problems with your spouse by talking to each other honestly, fighting fair and finding ways to avoid unnecessary conflicts in the future. A happy marriage is the union of two forgivers. Since marriage implies a union, there has to be togetherness between the spouses. If the couple lacks togetherness, they will not be happy. Therefore, you can only find happiness in a marriage if you and your partner are really happy from within and enjoy acts of togetherness. In the long run, marriage doesn’t make you happy as such but you can make your marriage a happy one. Pauline Bondin is a Senior Social Worker

GUIDE TO wedding souvenirs

edding favours have always been popular and it’s kind of expected by guests that they will take something with them after the wedding party. Even, if they know that they will not make use of it, they will all wait to see what you will be offering as an appreciation for their presence on your big day.
can turn to, to create endless boards with different kinds of souvenirs.
One can choose from various types of favours ranging from simple bookmarks, to elegant crystal and delicious, edible treats too! Here are some ideas to help you narrow down your choices.
It’s a good idea to choose items based on the season you are getting married in. For instance, if you are having a winter wedding small bottles of mulled wine, or hot chocolate kits would be ideal. For a summer wedding coloured fans or flipflops would be great. Some scented candles or edible goods such as the traditional perlini can be fun for a fall wedding. For a springtime wedding it would be a nice idea to give out plant seeds, potted plants or miniature bottles of olive oil or honey.
First of all start by doing some research so you can see what you like best. If you browse the internet or various wedding magazines, like this one, you can have a look at what is available on the market or what you are after, before you decide what you want. Pinterest is a very useful app you
Wedding theme based favours are a good guide to choosing the right ones for your guests. Lately, candy bars are becoming very popular, where guests can make their own choice of sweets to take with them; even though they usually end up munching them all there and then. If you have a spe-

cific colour palette, set up a candy bar with all your favourite treats in the chosen colour scheme. The table can also be decorated according to the theme for example if you are throwing a vintage wedding you can complete the table with traditional Maltese sweets and produce. Nowadays donations to a charity organisation have become very popular. There are various organisations one can opt to donate to. It could be a cause that you support, such as an animal charity organisation or children’s hospital. Usually, the chosen organisation provides the couple with small gift-notes to give out to their guests to let them know a donation has been given. Make sure to give something meaningful or useful to your guests so that they can keep, use or eat it, and think of the lovely time they had at your wedding day!

THE COUPLE
Joelene & Jean Karl 22 April 2018 Joelene Cauchi, 27 years, accountant and business owner and Jean Karl Cauchi, 28 years, Business owner. Their ceremony was held at St Joseph Parish church, Msida, followed by a reception at the Saluting Battery, Upper Barrakka Gardens.
J
oelene and Jean Karl met unexpectedly via facebook, Jean Karl messaged Joelene and started asking her questions about herself. One thing led to another and he also asked for a date on the same day. He arrived an hour late, because he got lost, but it was surely love at first sight. They were never apart from that day onwards. Âť
I DO 27
They knew right from the start that they were meant to be and that they would get married one day. Even so, Jean Karl still proposed to Joelene, in the bedroom of their new apartment. However, it was of no surprise to Joelene as they were already making arrangement for the wedding, but he wanted to make it special for her. The couple got married on April 22nd, in 2018 and luckily for them, it was a bright and beautiful sunny day. They had a Cinderella fairy-tale themed wedding party. It was a dream come true, especially for the bride. All preparations related to the theme were in her hands. They tied the knot at St Joseph Parish church, Msida. It is the church they attend regularly for Mass so it was an obvious choice for the service. A wedding reception was held afterwards at the Saluting Battery, Upper Barrakka Gardens. The venue has spectacular views, especially for such a beautiful occasion. With regards to the decorations, everything was related to the Cinderella theme. They had a Cinderella carriage photo booth, a candy table and other related props by Golden Edge Event Services, along with a Cinderella themed handmade guestbook. Âť

They also had beautiful flower arrangements by Romano Cassar Florist on the tables, and around the cake that matched with the bridesmaid’s dresses, which were all in different styles and pastel colours. The main focus was the cake, which was hung on top of a chandelier. It was handmade by the bride and her dad and had around 200 strands of crystals from Bow & Ribbon, all hand sewn on top of a glass. The wedding invitations completed the theme perfectly. They were an elegant, shimmery ivory with a statement pearl on the front, from Concept Creations by Charlene Debattista. As for the souvenirs, they were ivory lanterns with the message ‘love lights the way’, from Kudos. Both Jean Karl and Joelene agree that every little detail made their day a spectacular one. Joelene walked down the aisle wearing an Aline, princess dress with a high neckline and multiple layers of French lace and Swarovski crystal beads from Ivory and Co by Pronovias Atelier. She had the most gorgeous tiara, which she got from the USA, a pair of lace gloves, and a pair of platinum Jimmy Choo’s that complemented the dress. Jean Karl chose a blue suit, white shirt and matching cufflinks from Hugo Boss. »

One highlight was definitely a very sensitive one. Joelene lost her mum less than a year before the wedding day, so it was hard for Joelene not having her on such an important day. However she wanted to honour her and gave a speech about her mum during the wedding, she managed to make everyone cry even bystanders on the upper Barrakka Gardens. Other highlights included their first dance which was Xemx, sung by their dear friend Ivan Grech; they learnt the choreography for this special occasion at Plethora Dance. Also, the cutting of the cake was definitely a moment they will cherish forever. It was a day they will remember fondly they enjoyed it to the full together with their families and friends. It was also very well planned and all went according to plan, this was made possible with the help of their talented wedding planner Carmelino Refalo. After such a memorable day they went on their dream honeymoon to the Scandinavian countries.

Marika & Graham 11 May 2018 Marika Grech, 31, Finance Manager, and Graham Attard, 30, Architect and Operational Civil Engineer with the Civil Protection Department, held their wedding Mass at the Parish Church, in Zebbug, and their reception at Casino Maltese, Valletta.
M
arika and Graham used to be in the same class way back during their high school years, but they were never in the same group of friends so nothing happened between them until they met again one Saturday night, some six years later. They started to meet every weekend until their relationship became steadier and seven years after that they tied the knot. Âť

They moved in together after a couple of years and decided that the next step was to get married. Even so, there still was a proposal, Graham proposed while dining at a special restaurant. Graham and Marika got married on May 11, 2018. The ceremony was held in the Parish Church of Żebbuġ. “We choose this church because Marika is from Żebbuġ and the church was all set for the feast that takes place on 12 May, so it was extra spectacular”, the couple agreed. A reception followed at the Casino Maltese, in Valletta. They chose this venue because of its classical features. They did not have a particular theme but adopted an overall classical look. They decorated both the church and the
reception venue with pastel coloured flowers, by Floreal, including some candelabras to add to the classic look. The invitations were simple, but very elegantly decorated with flowers and Maltese calligraphy to add that classical touch. They were designed by Boo&Co. While for the souvenirs: “We organized an outing for the children residing at Angela House in Guadamangia. We took the 32 children, five Sisters supervising the children and one volunteer to Mc Donald’s and afterwards, we went to the cinema altogether. We choose to do this because we wanted to share the happiness of our big day with the children of Angela House. It was a highlight for all the children and ourselves as well”, the couple recalled. »
Marika and Graham agree that their wedding day was one of the best days of their lives they had a blast with all their guests dancing the night away to the classical music of the Big Band Brothers; it was just perfect. All this was also possible thanks to their organiser Clayton at The Organizer, who took care that everything went according to plan, and who happened to also provide the red carpet and the drinks for their big day. The bride wore a simple yet very elegant dress from Eva Mariee Exclusive. It was a mermaid dress overlaid with lace, and with a chiffon and lace cape for the church. The groom got married in the Civil Protection uniform, it definitely added an extra classical touch. The wedding day was a way of celebrating their love and their future together, it meant a lot to them both and they will cherish this celebration forever. After their wedding day, they went on a two-week cruise in the Fjords, through Costa Cruises.

Ruth & Conrad 9 December 2017 Ruth Micallef, 30, Executive Officer, and Conrad Attard, 31, Draughtsman, were married at Ghaxaq Parish Church. A reception followed at Villa Blanche, Zurrieq.
R
uth and Conrad are one of the modern couples who met through social media. They spent a lot of time chatting before Conrad actually convinced Ruth to meet. When they met Ruth knew right there and then that he was the one. After four years together they bought a house and halfway through the works a proposal came along, and eventually a date was set for their wedding day. Conrad proposed in the most romantic way, “For our fifth anniversary Conrad insisted he wanted to start the day with the sunrise to try out a time-lapse video, so we went to one of our favourite spots in the south of the island. Once there and enjoying the sunrise Conrad handed over a small handmade notebook full of photos, sketches and small meaningful messages throughout. The last page read ‘Will You Marry Me?’ With the ring hidden in a compartment in the same notebook”, Ruth remembered fondly. They got married on December 9, 2017, at Ghaxaq Parish Church. It is very close to their new house so they wanted to start their new journey there. A reception was followed at Villa Blanche. It was the perfect venue for them since it has a large indoor space and was close to the church. »
Both venues were decorated with simple touches of white. They had white flowers, by Rita Schembri, at the church and also added some fairy lights to the main feature, behind the wedding cake. They also had white draped tents outside, and a photo backdrop frame with drapes and flowers at the venue. As for the invitations, which included Maltese calligraphy, the groom designed them himself and printed them at Colour Focus. While for souvenirs they gave a donation to Dr Klown, to help Clown doctors continue to help and entertain children in the hospital.
Their wedding day was just perfect and everything they had planned for. They wanted a simple winter wedding with an emphasis on their love, and that is exactly what happened. The highlight of their wedding day was without a doubt the exchanging of the vows, it was a very intense moment for the couple; as, especially, was the way the priest made his speech, it was quite entertaining, said the couple. Ruth walked down the aisle wearing the most romantic ball gown with long sleeves and a V neck. She knew what she was looking for and how she wanted the dress. Âť

She got the fabric from Alamango textiles, and her mother-in-law made it for her. Even the bridesmaid dresses were hand sewed by Conrad’s mother, they all looked fabulous. The groom got the smart suit from Bortex. They had a great time dancing together with their families and friends to the music by Xarulu and DJ Roland from Visage sound. Their first dance was an acapella version of You’ve Got the Love by Florence and the Machine. It was also a memorable moment for the couple, and a great day for them that they will remember fondly for the rest of their lives. After their big day, they went on a short break in Poland. But they continued celebrating later on in summer, when they
went to Canada and on an Alaskan Cruise, all planned by their travel agency Compass Travel.

Christie & Alan 10 February 2018 Tina Christie, 32, Radio DJ, Psychology Assistant and Counsellor, and Alan Xerri, 31, Public Servant, held their wedding ceremony at St Paul’s Shipwreck, Valletta, followed by a reception at Villa Arrigo, Naxxar.
T
ina Christie and Alan met one Saturday night, at the Siġġiewi, village feast, as they had friends in common. Tina Christie was in love at first but she took a while before making her first move. From the day they met, they met each other frequently, together with their group of friends, during that summer. As time went, by Tina Christie got to know that Alan had the same feelings towards her so she decided to make the first move and the rest is history. Marriage was the next common goal for both, and it was without a doubt Tina Christie’s favourite thought. When she could not wait any longer and she once again made the first move and proposed to Alan herself. However Alan surprised her with a second proposal a year after that, it was very romantic indeed from his end! They got married on the feast of St Paul’s Shipwreck, 10 February, 2018. They are both involved in this feast, so it was a natural choice for them. The feast was celebrated earlier that month, because of carnival celebrations also happening in Valletta; so they could choose the date of their wedding day. A reception was followed at the impressive venue of Villa Arrigo. The couple pointed out that coincidentally, its address happened to be: Villa Arrigo, St Paul’s Street, San Pawl tat-Tarġa, Naxxar, so it had to be the venue for their reception. »
50 I DO
They did not have a particular theme but they had a wintery feel throughout their wedding day since it was in February and the weather is quite cold in Malta. The church was still decorated with the feast decorations, so it looked very opulent. They just added some lovely flowers by Stephen Schembri, at Meme’s Fleuriste. The venue had some nice fairy lights that added to the overall sparkle and also some extra flowers here and there as there was no need for a lot of decorations.
The invitations were designed by a dear friend of the couple Pawlu Mizzi, they were quite unique consisting of a photo wedding invitation adorned with loads of colour, with Valletta as a backdrop. The photo was taken by another friend, Carl Farrugia, and the invitations were then printed by Polidano Press. “With regards to souvenirs, as a couple we wished to donate to charity while also giving our guests a wedding favour. Given that wedding preparations were close to Christmas, we
decided to give a brighter Christmas to children in need through Children’s Dreams project and Children’s funds. Moreover, we wanted to have that perfect sweet to add that special touch and opted for chocolates instead of the typical sweets Perlini”, the couple explained. Tina Christie walked down the aisle to Alan wearing a princess style dress with white organza ruffle from Centro Sposa; while Alan got his smart navy blue suit from The Groom Collection. »

The couple agrees that they had the perfect day. It was timed and planned perfectly thanks to their bestman, Raphael Borg, and his wife Claire Borg Azzilla, together with the groom’s witness Jeremy Agius and his girlfriend Martina Spiteri. “We managed to enjoy every second! The whole day was special; consisting of different highlights that made the day a huge success!” the couple concluded. For their honeymoon, they went to two romantic cities Rome and Florence, thanks, to Enrico Travel the result was amazing.

manda and Christopher met at a very young age. Christopher made the first move and asked for Amanda’s number from a friend, without Amanda’s permission. They started talking by chatting together online but one thing led to another and after a few dates they just knew that they were meant to be. Christopher surprised Amanda one Christmas Eve with the most romantic proposal after the Midnight Mass. She said yes, of course. Also, after six years going out together and their house being ready, the next natural step was to tie the knot, and their wedding day was December 16th in 2017, just a week before Christmas. »

Considering the time of the year, the theme was Christmas and all the decorations related to that theme. Most of all, they had a state-of- the- art cake, made by the groom himself. It was a whole Christmas village, and took him over three months to complete. All the guests were in awe when they saw it. They had Christmas flowers at the church, by Xerri’s Garden Centre, all these decorations made everything look more festive. The
invitations were also related to the theme; they were like Christmas parcels created by Hand Creations by Margot. “To match we also made our souvenirs Christmas related as we chose a wooden heart-shaped Christmas ornament which had the word ‘love’ inscribed on it”, the couple explained. They are both very fond of Christmas time, so it was a dream come true for them that they were able to adopt such a theme. Amanda and Christopher were married at
Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary; one of the most famous and visited churches in Gozo with the most magnificent architecture and surroundings, while the reception followed at Ta Frenċ restaurant. They knew they wanted to hold the reception there since the place is renowned for its excellent service. For this special day, Amanda wore a mermaid style dress with cap sleeves and a matching ivory cape that completed the whole wintery look, from La Gatta Boutique. »

Christopher, on the other hand, wore a classic navy blue suit with a red Christmas boutonniere flower to add that extra touch to the theme. They had a great time at their wedding especially during their first dance which was Perfect by Ed Sheeran, and included a surprise guest appearance by Ivan Grech from Wintermoods. They could not believe it, it was a surprise from their parents. For their honeymoon they went to Mauritius and Dubai, it was an excellent choice as it was a dream getaway, thanks to their travel agency, Tristar Agency.

BUDAPEST Budapest is one of those places where you can find everything you are looking for from ice-skating in front of a fairy-tale castle, admiring a 360-degrees view of the city from an igloo on a rooftop bar, spa escapes and an indulgence of a fine dining experience. Budapest claims multiple thermal baths that are open all year-round, including the most renowned of them all, Széchenyi, home to the deepest and hottest wells in the city that are just as popular in winter when snow falls over the open-air pools as they are in the summer. Found at the top of the tallest building on Andrássy Avenue, a popular summertime hangout called 360 Bar now stays open during winter. Thanks to the series of innovative igloos installed at this bar one can enjoy the fascinating views while the couple can enjoy wintertime drinking. If your honeymoon is close to the festive season one of Budapest’s most beautiful Christmas fairs is backdropped by monumental St. Stephen’s Basilica, a building that also serves as a canvas for multi-coloured light shows while the festive bazaar is set up on SzentIstván Square, featuring 3D animations. Also, at this time of the year, vintage Budapest vehicles become special Christmastime carriages taking travellers on a magical journey. Garlanded with numerous shining lights, trams slides along Budapest’s most scenic route, creating a stunning visual experience under the fold of darkness.
AUSTRIA A honeymoon in Austria is like a dream come true. The baroquestyle castles exhibit the splendour and history of the former royalties. The alpine roads will please you with the views of meadows and snow-capped mountains. The culture, in Austria, is amazing and you would want to stay there. There are various romantic places where one could stay in Austria such as Vienna for architecture lovers. Couples will fall in love with the city, with the different building styles surrounding the city. For one of the most romantic evening, head up to the top of the city’s tallest building to 57 Restaurant & Lounge, with 360-degree views over Vienna from the top two floors of the DC Tower. And once again if you are travelling before the Christmas time, Vienna is also very popular for the most glamorous Christmas markets, there is nothing
more romantic than strolling through these fascinating markets. If you are after a more relaxing, hideout then Mostviertel is the getaway you are after. It is the most romantic panoramic place to visit. The Mostviertel, is found in the Lower Austria’s southwestern corner, takes its name from apple cider which is produced and consumed in the area. It would make a fantastic holiday for long walks, and bike rides in the fascinating nature surroundings. Other interesting areas one can consider in Austria are Bad Gastein, Lienz and Feldkirch. As long as you are with your better half the place you visit is just a detail but one must admit that your honeymoon comes once in a lifetime and you should make the most of it.

WeddingBells MARQUITA KEMPER, of WeddingBells, Valletta, shared her expertise about the latest trends in the wedding fashion industry. YOU HAVE BEEN IN THE BRIDAL FASHION BUSINESS FOR MANY YEARS. HOW HAVE BRIDAL FASHIONS CHANGED, DURING THAT TIME? Yes, it has been 22 years. Initially, bridal fashion only changed periodically, especially when a celebrity wedding took place, such as Lady Diana’s. Otherwise, the pace was slow and gradual. DO CELEBRITY WEDDINGS STILL INFLUENCE A BRIDE’S CHOICE OF DRESS? Yes, for sure, but the influence is not so great. Social media is probably the greatest trend setter of the moment, on the international and local scene. Brides-to-be are bombarded with images of beautiful, glamorous, fashion forward and even daring wedding gowns that they aspire to wear on their special day. AND ARE CLASSICAL STYLES STILL IN VOGUE? Yes! A classical, traditional bridal gown is always what so many girls still want to wear, on their wedding day. This is evident on so many social media platforms like Pintrest and Instagram. Yes, the classical bridal gown has changed since its heyday in the 1940s, 50s and 80s, but the timeless ‘ball gown’ is still very much alive and kicking. SO, WHAT ARE THE HOT TRENDS OF THE MOMENT? Well, although trends do exist, ultimately what matters most to any woman is that she chooses a dress that makes her feel beautiful and reflects the person she is, inside and out. Finding that dress is our mission!
