W
hat could be more romantic? And although we don’t have the weather for snowy scenes and brides in romantic white faux-fur cloaks, arriving at the church in a sleigh pulled by white ponies, we do have everything else to set the mood for a winter wedding. Our bridal fashions are pictured in the stunning location of Palazzo de Piro, and we have a bride and groom. Our Meet the Model feature introduces Claire and Antonio who play these roles in this shoot.
WINTER WHITE WEDDINGS A wedding warms a cold winter day with the glow of true love.
We think the groom’s look is every bit as important as his bride’s and to prove this we discuss some different accessories, with some suggestions that will complement but not upstage the bride. November’s couples share their stories of the most important day of their lives. And, if you were a 2019 bride, your story could be featured in a future issue. Our regular cocktail page also has the groom in mind. We take a look at his, very important, speech. So much should be said, and a lot should not be mentioned. So we have tips for making it perfect, and a couple of cocktails for the toasts that will follow. We also understand the importance of wedding food in features from choosing a caterer and the type of food to serve, to introducing different refreshments for your guests. After all, this is one of the most important choices you will face.
“You are warmer than the summer, so I hold you through the winter” - Anon
Marriage also means changes, and the biggest change for some brides will be their name. Feelings on this matter differ and we look at how more and more brides are thinking about their choices. Our November magazine is the last for this year. We’d like to thank everyone who shared their weddings and contributed in this year’s issues. And we are off to plan many more pieces for next year, and we would love you to share any ideas you have for 2020; it will be here sooner than we know. Stay in touch on our Facebook page. We will!

WHAT’S IN A NAME? MODERN BRIDES HAVE AN IMPORTANT CHOICE TO MAKE BEFORE THEY MARRY… WHOSE NAME DO THEY TAKE?
I
t’s the weirdest feeling to change your name, literally overnight. One day you are you then suddenly, for the rest of your life, you will be known as someone else. Some brides even admit to feeling as if their whole identity has vanished. Your ID card, passport, social security and bank account numbers, gym memberships and credit cards will belong to ‘someone else’. And however quickly you get used to recognising your new name, when going to appointments, signing forms and documents or just introducing yourself to new people, it may take a while before you automatically think of yourself as ‘this person’. This never used to be such an issue. Young girls used to dream of becoming Mrs Whoever, and practise writing the names of likely husbands on every scrap of paper they could find. Changing your name to your husbands was just a romantic dream that would, one day, become true. But, there are now more women than ever considering their options and choosing to keep their surnames after they marry. So here are some points to help any bride who finds herself faced with making such an important and lasting decision.
◊ Y OU COULD KEEP Y OUR NAME because: You are already known in your profession by your surname. Colleagues and clients will be able to connect as usual after you’re married; employment records, contracts and contact details can remain unchanged. You are the last member of your family with that name and would like it to carry on as a family name. Your name is particularly distinctive or useful in some way. Your husband’s name is unpronounceable or has associations you would rather avoid. You do not want to go through the endless paperwork and record research required to reissue vital documents and proofs of identity. It sends the wrong message in our 8 I DO
era of equality – why should a woman have to make the change, not her husband?
◊ Y OU COULD Y OUR NAME because the majority of brides still value this tradition. You’ve never liked your own surname. Your new name carries a certain status or prestige. You will not have to keep explaining why you are not known as Mr & Mrs Husbandsname. You can avoid constant explanations in offices, clinics and at the school gates if you and your child have the same name. You can be automatically accepted as next of kin when necessary. ◊ Y OU COULD COMPROMISE by adopting the age-old trick of adding a hyphen. Discuss whose name goes first carefully and thoughtfully. Remember that you and everyone else will need to be able to pronounce it easily. The not unimportant matter of future children having a surname near the front of the alphabet may be an issue. Your families need to be happy, and the new combination should not risk connecting you both to another family tree all together! And, of course, there’s always the thought that some husbands take their wife’s name, which would be a lovely way to carry on her direct line if she came from a family of sisters.
There’s no one size fits all solution for a bride who really is struggling with this decision and the fact that it has to made by the time she marries seems like added pressure. What is important is that whatever name you choose it will stand for the love and unity that marriage represents and who has ever found the perfect name for that?

COCKTAILS
THE GROOM’S SPEECH Whether he likes it or not, a groom is bound by tradition and duty to make a speech at his wedding. So, where can he begin…and end?
Eat, drink and be married
Here are two delicious cocktails with a kick, to offer at a winter wedding
OLD FASHIONED IN A “SOMETHING NEW” WAY 30ml
bourbon
30ml
Calvados or Applejack
15ml
Génépi Guillaumette
3 slices
fresh pears
6 drops
bitters lemon twist
cardamom pods
1
bottle Riesling
2 tsp
brandy
2 tbsp
honey
2
bay leaves
1
lemon, halved
4 strips
lemon zest
◊ List everyone you need to mention and everything you need and want to say them. With the help of your best man go over the list to make sure no one has been left out. ◊ Make your speech short and punchy, float in a dash of sentiment. Keep jokes original and uncontroversial, and at all stages be full of praise and gratitude. ◊ Begin by responding to the bride’s father. Compliment him as a father. Thank him for the part he has played in the wedding. Comment on your friendship – your first meeting, a shared interest for example. However tempting, do not tease him or tell jokes at his expense; not in front of all his daughter’s wedding guests. ◊ Thank the bride’s family for welcoming you, your family and friends for their help. ◊ Mention the bridesmaids, your best man and ushers and point out a particular, personal example of how each one has helped with your celebrations.
METHOD – Muddle pear slices and lemon twist in a mixing glass. Add remaining ingredients and cracked ice to fill mixing glass. Stir briefly and double-strain into a rocks glass with a single large cube. Garnish with a pear slice.
WHITE WINE TODDY 4
T
he father of the bride makes a speech, so does the best man and, occasionally, the chief bridesmaid and the bride. So the groom’s speech has to stand out. These few hints will ensure your speech is remembered, even quoted, for all the right reasons.
METHOD – Toast cardamom pods in a dry pan, by tossing frequently over a high heat until fragrant. Gently crush with a mortar and pestle. Combine riesling, brandy, honey, cardamom pods and bay leaves in a saucepan. Squeeze lemon halves over liquid and add rinds simmer gently and steep for 45 minutes on the lowest heat setting. Strain and divide between glasses. Garnish with lemon zest.
◊ Show your appreciation of your guests’ coming to your wedding, especially if they have had to travel or make special arrangements to attend. Let them know how much you and your bride value them being there. ◊ Finally, toast your bride, now your wife, in enough words to let her, and everyone else, know how and why she is the most beautiful bride ever, and will always be the love of your life. It’s all quite simple isn’t it? But if you are still quivering at the thought, and considering hiring a speech writer, remember that everyone will be on your side and no word perfect, clever speech could ever mean as much as your own words, spoken straight from the heart.

Antonio: Lija would be an ideal place as it is a quiet area with beautiful surroundings and close to all amenities. What is the happiest job or career you could have? Claire: Self-employed graphic designer with no restrictions on leave whatsoever. Antonio: I have always dreamt of becoming a professional athlete, although I know how tough it might get, it’s definitely the first on my list. How do you like to relax? Claire: Playing any type of sport, especially basketball and tennis, watching movies, shopping Antonio: Watching any kind of sport (especially football) and let’s not forget some tasty nibbles to complete my afternoon. Who are the people who make you happiest, for whatever reasons? Claire: Family, without a shadow of a doubt, they always have my back no matter what. Antonio: I enjoy nothing more than spending time with my family and friends. What could the world do without and what does it need more of? Claire: Racism and people doing what they love. Antonio: Mosquitoes just as you are about to nod off. What do you think of social media and what do you mostly use it for? Claire: To stay in touch and up to date mainly Antonio: I am very private in a public world and not the sort of person who shares every detail of my life on social media. However, it is a great medium to keep in touch with my relatives and friends and also stay updated on any news.

HINTS & HELP
A WELL-GROOMED GROOM
W
ith much of the attention on the bride and bridesmaids’ dresses, hair, shoes and makeup, grooms can sometimes feel a bit lost when it comes to nailing their wedding day outfit and accessories. Maybe you’re unsure about what is expected of you appearance-wise, or perhaps you want to forget about tradition and wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable, but are unsure where to start. Do you go for classic or traditional – plain or patterned shirt, matching or rainbow waistcoat, flashing belts and braces? I DO asked MARY MERCIECA, from THE KNOT, who specialises in groom’s formal wear, what grooms seeking style and confidence should look for. Neck wear – A tie is a traditionalist’s go to for a smart look. Bow ties are less common and can be fun and sophisticated. Cravats are extremely elegant and set the groom apart from the crowd. Cufflinks, traditional and still in style, can bring an outfit to life. They also make great groomsmen’s accessories. Belts or suspenders? It is your choice. Both serve the same purpose. Belts are better suited to more casual outfits plain, simple suspenders are appropriate for a more formal look. Never wear both together. Accessories as gifts – Providing a token of your appreciation to the special men who serve as groomsmen is important. It shows you value their role in your wedding. Remember, they will all have different tastes so giving them the same gift may not show how well you know them. You also want to give them something they will actually use. If there are items that you would like your groomsmen to wear during the ceremony they could also be a gift, like socks or cufflinks with a personalised touch. MATCHING ACCESSORIES WITH Y OUR BRIDE’S DRESS AND THE WEDDING THEME. There are perfect, subtle ways to do this: ◊ Select a coloured tie to match the wedding theme or flowers. ◊ A small pocket square, in a coordinating colour, worn in the breast pocket adds a little extra polish to your look. ◊ Ensure your button hole or lapel flower fits the wedding theme. AND SOME LIKELY TRENDS FOR 2020? The classic three-piece suit (complete with waistcoat) is back in vogue for 2020 – a trend we really love! This suit is effortlessly stylish and contemporary and therefore absolutely perfect for your luxury dream wedding. After the formalities, you can take off the jacket and create a cool, relaxed look with pushed up shirt sleeves. Bold, colourful, patterned socks are trending and on the rise. This is a great way to show some personality. This accessory is worth a couple of pictures and you can even coordinate them with your groomsmen. And if ties are not your style, traditional and smart, creative bow ties are making their way back onto the wedding scene. Suspenders are also back in style and can help grooms combine playful with elegance.

HINTS & HELP
Choosing your caterer SOME PEOPLE WILL SAY THAT THE CATERING IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF A WEDDING, AND THEY ARE NOT WRONG.
C
ertainly caterers play a vital role in ensuring the success of the event and choosing yours needs care and dedication. Word of mouth recommendations and your own experience of the weddings you have been to are good ways to begin a short list of possibilities. And be sure to ask for, and check, references. Be prepared to widen your search if necessary. For example, if the venue you have chosen has its own, sole caterers and you are not convinced they will provide the food and presentation you want, it’s not worth compromising on such an important detail. Once you have narrowed down your selection make appointments to meet and discuss your wishes. Before you go, decide on your budget and make it clear you will stick to it. While you are there, notice whether the person you are speaking to is actually in charge and find out and who you will be dealing with on a one-to -one basis throughout all the arrangements and the actual event. Also, are they listening to what you are saying and answering your questions exactly, or talking so much about their services and what they will give you that you leave feeling like one of their projects. A good company will go out of their way to make your reception as perfect as possible. Walk away from any company that cannot convince you it can do this. If you are hiring an independent caterer there are important things you will need to know. So ask about: What services are included with each catering package from,
food and drink to a leftovers bag. What service and dinnerware is included; what table settings do they offer; who handles rentals such as chinaware, linen chairs and tables? Consider the server-to-guest ratio – too few waiters will mean delays between courses which could ruin the meal and the whole timing of the event. Precisely do the charges per head cover – you are looking for a total including VAT and any labour, hiring or service charges. Get all final estimates in writing to prevent any nasty shocks when the bill comes in. When you have got this far book a tasting, which allows you to taste the food and find the best options for your event; to see the service you can expect at your wedding; customise your menu, and build a relationship with your caterer. For this you need to be a bit hungry. You
should have a full spread at your menu tasting – everything from hors d’oeuvres to desserts. You won’t have to eat it all, just enough to know exactly how everything tastes so you can make your final decision confidently. While you are there, ask about what fresh food items are best in the season you’re holding you wedding as this could influence your choices. Ask about any signature dishes the chef has. You also need to know how they cater for specific dietary requirements; how the food will be prepared and what transport, cooking and reheating facilities they have; and what the arrangements are for serving options, like buffet, seated meals, or service stations. By being clear and realistic about what you would like and accept there is no reason why you shouldn’t find a caterer who really can cater to your every need.
I DO 31
INSPIRATION
The food of love While people don't only go to weddings to eat and drink, the feast you offer them is an important part of the event.
Y
our choice will possibly depend on the season, time and venue of the wedding ceremony. But the good news for couples planning a reception in the near future is that there have never been so many options to choose from. A traditional, table service wedding meal will always have its place. But for many couples it’s budge over buffets and ciao chocolate fountain, as wedding trends, are radically restyling the way couples cater for their guests. Menus reflect the constant change in our eating habits and food preferences and those of the guests. Several details need to be considered, and, luckily there are plenty of delicious options available. For example, all-day breakfasts and brunches are a way of life, so for morning weddings many caterers are offering this concept. Mid-day weddings have made afternoon tea a popular idea, between the ceremony and the evening celebrations. The gap between sweet and savoury foods has been widened a lot, by health and dietary concerns. Travel to exotic locations and the local growth in ethnic or themed eateries has increased our appetite for international cuisine. The novelty of street food, sweet treat wagons and taster samples of our own local delicacies, tweaked by luxury presentation and service, have all left a bride and groom with both a mouth-watering and mind-bending choice to make. Here are some choices for very special food to serve your guests, in either formal settings, or a street party or (carefully staged) picnic in the venue grounds. SAVOURY SENSATIONS Menus based on ‘locally grown and produced‘ food. Accent will be on quality, locally-sourced, even organic, food, perfectly prepared. Your celebration will support sustainable products and local businesses. There will be plenty of healthy foods and consideration of allergies and special diets. Guests from overseas will love a sample of Malta’s finest recipes produce. Comfort foods, especially for a winter wedding, where guests can relax with tasty and evocative memories of childhood favourites Street food, from custom-designed and decorated vans, could serve fish and chips, top-of-therange burgers, hot dogs, crêpes, sushi, or Indian and Chinese dishes. Or lay the grazing table, with an appetising selection of cold meats, antipasto, dips, breads, crackers, tapas and salads, in stylish dishes, platters, baskets and boards. Cheese wagons or tables are now making a great impression and some couples are choosing to cut a fully decorated cheese creation, instead of a traditional cake. An international touch will come with a pizza buffet bar; only the best luxury toppings, an oyster bar, taco and nacho bars from the west, or an Asian fusion station. SWEET TREATS All food guilt disappears at a wedding. Spoil your guests with a dessert buffet serving fresh fruit and cream and mini puddings; trolleys laden with donuts, and the latest tea-time treats and a candy floss machine, plus ice-cream wagons, for summer weddings, with plenty of flavours and toppings for guests to make their own sundaes or just one cornetto. AND LET’S NOT FORGET THE DRINKS Free bar, cash bar and/or waiter service, you will have to decide. But think of including barrels of beer, a mini wine bar, alcohol-free and craft cocktail bars, with the usual wine and champagne.

TRENDING CHOICES
from Keith Psaila, Director Palazzo Castelletti Couples are increasingly after stand-up receptions, which facilitate social interaction and also allow more flexibility in the whole organisation of the event. Most of the time, the bride and groom-to-be choose to combine a reception menu with a speciality table, to ensure a wider variety of food options to choose from during the reception. Following this trend we have recently introduced a new selection of speciality tables that reflect our customers’ requirements. One of the preferred ones is definitely our Surf and Turf Table (oven-baked salmon, lemon and basil marinated prawn skewers, oven-roasted beef rib-eye in veal jus, rosemary garlic marinated pork fillets kebabs), together with the classic Cheese Table which is always a great addition to any reception menu.

THE COUPLE
Lindsey & Jean 7 June 2019 Lindsey Agius, 30, a website manager, and Jean Ciantar, 29 a lead designer, were married on 7, June, 2019, in Sant’Agatha’s Chapel, Rabat.
A CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL Jean and Lindsey first met in 2004, during a village feast in her home town of Rabat, when, they implied, a laser-like attraction shone between. Fifteen years later, on December 21st, Lindsey came home from work to a house all decorated for Christmas and friends of her parents were there for dinner. Jean called her over to the Christmas tree where she found him on one knee. “He told me to look for a special bauble which he had placed on the Christmas tree. I immediately spotted it – a big Gold bauble saying: ‘21.12.2016. Will you marry me?’ I was speechless as Jean isn’t very romantic. After all these years, we couldn’t wait to become husband and wife“, she explained. As Jean is passionate about his job in design, he designed a logo and the wedding invitations, which were made by Foilplus to his specifications. There was no specific theme, they chose very modern, minimal black and white. Lindsey’s sisters, Steph and Rebecca, best friend Oriana and Jean’s cousin Oanna, who were also my bridesmaids, made them a ‘wishing tree’by printing some of their photos, and those taken with their friends, and hanging them on the tree. It was amazing and many of their friends/guests loved looking for a photo with them in it. SO MANY EMOTIONS The couple fell in love with Sant’Agatha’s, after Lindsey’s sister, and Jean’s brother had their weddings in the small chapel. Lindsey arrived with her father in style, in an Austin Princess, previously used by royalty, from Dalton’s Chauffeur Services. »
I DO 35
» The wedding Mass was the highlight of their day, with music by singer Karin Duff in the church. “It was such a wonderful feeling, a feeling that I have never felt before. So many emotions, while my father walked me down the aisle to meet Jean. I couldn’t wait to see Jean’s reaction and be by his side“, said Lindsey. But, there was one shaky moment. “It was during our exchange of vows… we were so anxious and excited that we got confused and put the wrong hand towards each other. It was funny and we swapped
hands immediately. Together with our guests, we all laughed”, she continued. Lindsey had teased Jean about the ‘big’ dress she was going to wear and looked forward to seeing his reaction when she arrived at his side wearing her dream wedding gown – a Lorenzo Rossi column/sheath dress with the top and sleeves in guipure, and a satin skirt and train, which she finally found in WeddingBells, after trying on about 16 dresses in different shops. Lindsey also had a veil matching her dress and her Marian shoes, each with a brooch of silver
crystals on the front which were bought from Marchese Footwear. She also wore jewellery from Swarovski, a headpiece from ZsaZsa and carried a bouquet from Il-Warda flower shop. Jean bought his own outfit from The Groom Collection; it was a black tuxedo with a black velvet collar, and added Hugo Boss shoes and cuff links. The couple chose wedding rings from Frank Zampa Jewellery, they were both plain white gold, and Lindsey’s had some diamonds around it. »
I DO 37
A RECEPTION IN A PERFECT SETTING » The couple held their reception at one of their favourite venues, The Xara Lodge, having previously enjoyed quite a few weddings there. They remember the moment when they arrived at the reception, quite literally speechless and unable to believe that this time it was their wedding they were walking through, with decorations by Save the Date, including a magnificent initialed white carpet. Their guests loved their wedding from start to finish, including The Xara Lodge’s catering and three-tier almond and Baci wedding cake, some fabulous fireworks by Bernard Cauchi from BG Malta Fireworks Display and a splendid after party, with the amazing and talented Carlo Gerada as DJ. »
» Over and Over Again by Nathan Sykes was Lindsey and Jean’s choice for their first dance. For the second dance, they wanted their parents to join them dancing to Take That’s Rule the World. The amazing band Sterjo Tipi were so professional and involved everyone in a singalong. “I will never forget my Grandma Lucy, 89, and Grandpa Anthony, 91 years old, danced with us. We were so grateful and feel lucky that they were part of our wedding day”, Lindsey added. The bride and groom’s parties totaled 13, not unlucky this time. Lindsey says her make-up artist Janice Baldacchino, and hairdresser Annalise Azzopardi, at D Strand Hairstylist were amazingly talented, and couldn’t have done a better job at pampering her on her wedding day. And Anthony Sammut, their wedding organiser, made sure that everything went according to plan, and was prepared to perfection. »

» The couple gave silver frames to their families, and silver cufflinks and Swarovski earrings to their witnesses. They preferred to make a donation to Dar Bjorn, instead of souvenirs. Lindsey and Jean concluded: “We will surely remember our wedding day as the best day of our lives, when, together with our family and friends, we enjoyed every second – from start to finish. We heard it from many that they did not want to leave once the after party was over. They loved the venue, food and the décor.” And to round it all off there was their honeymoon in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Honolulu and Maui and San Francisco, a tick on their bucket list to visit the US, organised by Tristar Travel.

SUNSHINE AFTER RAIN Janine and Jean Paul had known each other for six years and shared the same values and life goals and wished to have a lovely family together. After three years Jean Paul proposed, on Janine’s 26th birthday. A picnic had been planned but unfortunately it was raining so much that the proposal took place in the car instead. Anyway, “It was still very special since it was very personal and emotional”, Janine remembers. The couple wanted special invitations to their wedding, and they immediately loved and chose a custom made design by Foilplus based on spring flowers, as they had requested. They chose Santa Lucija parish church, because it is in Janine’s home town and where they go for Mass as a couple on Sundays. It is also very modern and very well-lit, which makes it ideal for photos. Janine wore a dress from Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive. “I never thought I would buy a full A-line dress but when I tried it on I immediately felt comfortable and ready to get married”, she explained. Her dress had a strapless top with a sweetheart neckline and multiple small flowers, a pearl waist line and a simple chiffon skirt. Janine’s shoes and veil were both in ivory, to match her dress and she added pearl earrings and a matching hair band, also from Eva Mariee. She carried a bouquet including white roses and orchids, by Il-Warda, flower shop, and, so, with the added assistance of her hairdresser, Dorianne at The Room Hair & Beauty, and make-up artist Tiziana Ronayne, Janine achieved the simple yet elegant look she wanted. Jean Paul wanted a dark suite with a touch of grey, which he hired from Bortex, and he added an ivory waist-coat to match his bride’s dress. The couple exchanged rings of layered gold-platinum-gold each with an engraving of their names and wedding date, from GB Jewellers. »

» And their highlight moments? “The moment when we first looked at each other at the altar was very special and it felt so right. The moment when we said I do was very emotional we both couldn’t stop smiling at each other. And Janine’s maid of honour, Christine Barbara, sang a song in the church which was so special and meaningful”, they said. “Apart from the joy, it was the beginning of the real test of continuous love and responsibility towards my marriage and especially my wife”, Jean-Paul added. A RECEPTION WITH A VIEW Eden Lodge, Zurrieq, was chosen as the venue. It was very close to the church and has a single large hall so guests are not separated into different areas, plus a huge terrace with a beautiful view. It was decorated by A&S, with flowers by Il-Warda flower shop. The couple also attached some personal photos to LED pegs at the reception, to give the venue their individual touch. »

» Their caterer was Elia Caterers, who also made the cake they chose; a three-layer almond cake with a personalised cake topper, which was made for them by CM works, based on their own idea. With some lessons and choreography by Steps Ahead Dance Academy, Janine and Jean Paul’s first dance was a mash-up comprising six different songs. And the entertainment, provided by Zone 5 band, kept a very lively atmosphere going. “Our lovely family and friends made this day extra special, they danced with us all throughout the night”, said the couple. A PERSONAL TOUCH The couple wanted special invitations for their wedding. They immediately loved and chose a design by Foilplus, based on Spring flowers, as they had requested. Because they wanted to give their family and friends a message of love, they chose a message from the bible to be printed on a decorated wooden circle and hung as a decoration for their souvenirs. These were also made by CM Works. Very wisely Janine and Jean Paul considered special aspects of their wedding. “We planned our wedding with the help of family, and friends who had just got married. On the day of the wedding we had the wedding organisers by Jurgen Briffa, who ensured that everything ran smoothly. He was very supportive, and he made sure we had fun. We even had time to eat and drink at our own wedding! And prior to going to the reception we went to Wied iz-Zurrieq to take some nice photos. It was an opportunity for us to talk and relax before the reception”, the couple remembered. And, after such a wonderful wedding, Janine and Jean Paul went off on their choice of a perfect honeymoon, a combination of adventure, safari and paragliding in South Africa, and relaxation in Mauritius, organised by Royal Travel.

THE COUPLE
Maria Pia & Rodney 30 April 2019 Maria Pia Dingli, 26, a bank officer, and Rodney Mercieca, 32, a bank manager, were married in Santa Tereza, Cospicua. THE ROAD THAT LED FROM ROME In March 2018, Pia and Rodney had a holiday in Rome, a romantic break in their favourite European city. Pia had no idea that it would change her life forever. “On the first day of our holiday, Rodney took me to a small, cozy bar and gave me a ring. On that same day, we were both very excited and started planning our dream wedding”, she began. “The plan was to have a classic, vintage wedding theme, as we both wanted something simple yet classic. The wedding theme involved using gold and white colours as much as possible.” Some time later, they sent out their wedding invitations created for them in the gold and white theme by Foilplus. SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW Julie Zahra provided the music in the church; and Pia describes walking down the aisle, seeing Rodney waiting for her as a highlight of their day. And for Rodney it was seeing Pia walking down the aisle in her beautiful white dress. Pia had wanted something different and bought two dresses from Ivory & Co. – one to wear for dancing later. She wore a cape attached to her wedding dress, instead of a veil, shoes from EvaMariee Bridal Exclusive and a head band from ZSAZSA. »

» For jewellery she chose something old. “My earrings were given to me by my grandmother when I was younger and I also wore her mother’s vintage bracelet”, she said. And for her bouquet, by The Floral Designer, Pia chose calla lilies because her grandfather used to grow them in his garden. Pia wanted a very simple yet elegant look for her wedding day. Her hairdresser, Roderick Castillo, from Castillo Hair, created just the style she imagined. Her makeup artist was Rachel Gilford and her nails by Glowing Nails by Bella. Rodney always wanted a classical look so it wasn’t difficult for him to opt for a black suit for himself and his groom’s team. These were hired from The Groom Collection. His ring was a mix of white and rose gold, while Pia’s was made of white gold, with a number of small diamonds around the top section. A SPECTACULAR RECEPTION The couple fell in love with Villa Bighi as soon as they saw it, mostly for its unique heritage and breath-taking views, including spectacular scenes of several Maltese ports. They were extremely happy and impressed. »

» The wedding venue was split into three different sections: the dance floor, which had a Gin Bar included, by D Cocktail Bar; a chill out area with bars, live cooking stalls, heaters and sofas and the afterparty section which was staged indoors. Guests spoke highly of the decorations,
food and music. Ruben Décor, did an amazing job with decorating the venue, and the cherry on the cake was the fireworks festival, which just happened to be on the same day of the wedding – it really felt like a fairytale wedding venue. »

Rodney’s cousin, Michelle Barbara, is the wife of James Barbara, from James Caterers Limited. She spent almost a year supporting Pia and Rodney and guiding the choices they made. No wonder they stressed how satisfied they were with the quality of the food, the number of options, and level of professionalism. Their guests enjoyed a variety of canapés and finger food, followed by three live cooking stalls – Thai, Paella and American. “The wedding cake was decorated with gold and white and we had different types of flavours which included chocolate, red velvet, carrot and almond cake”, said Pia. The couple’s first dance song was very original. As soon as they heard The One, by Kodaline, they knew it was different from the usual first dance songs and they wanted it. “Thanks to Airport Impressions, especially lead singer Errol, the song was
played live, making it even more special to us. They stepped things up and created a nice vibe, playing various rock songs”, they said.” DJ Carl Lautier took things in his own hands for the after hours and he smashed it till the very end!” they added. Pia and Rodney also had great help from Ramon Camilleri – R. Creations for Weddings & Events. He was always ready, providing constant guidance help and support whenever it was needed. “We both agree that it would not have been possible for us to make it happen if it wasn’t for Ramon!” they claimed. And, while they plan a honeymoon for next year, they can look back on random memories like Pia’s grandmother eating chips while dancing in front of the DJ at the after party; dancing all night long with their family and close friends. and the joy we both felt walking out of the church as a married couple.

THE COUPLE
Phyllisienne & Josmar 1 December 2018 Phyllisienne Mallia, 31, a teacher, and Josmar Borg, 34, an education officer, were married in Mqabba Parish Church.
A PERFECT CHOICE Phyllisienne and Josmar soon knew they were perfect for each other despite the things they did not have in common. Josmar proposed on Phyllisienne’s birthday, in 2016, in their favourite bar among family and friends. “I knew it was going to happen sooner or later because we talked about marriage quite a lot. But never did it occur to me it would happen in public, since Josmar is quite reserved. He prepared a short clip with our photos which ended with the question ‘Will you marry me?’. Of course I was tearfully speechless especially when he knelt down, waiting for my answer”, she explained. »
I DO 63
» Homemade invitations were patiently designed and printed by Phyllisienne’s youngest sister. They were simple and elegant, in ivory and burgundy with a touch of pearl. Phyllisienne added a bow and pearl, and glued every invitation together. They announced the couple’s Christmas themed wedding perfectly. MAGIC MOMENTS AND A TOUCH OF HUMOUR On the day Phyllisienne remembers feeling very relaxed, although it was raining cats and dogs from early morning. But her mum was stressed at having to leave the house to be at the hairdresser. Luckily the rain stopped for a few hours and they got into church without getting soaked. The wedding Mass was in Mqabba church
because it is where the couple live and they fell in love with the church instantly. They had it decorated with just white flowers and a long red carpet. Fr John and Fr Anton are both special to the bride and groom, and they both celebrated the Mass. “It turned out beautifully, with a hint of humour, as Fr John is so known for humour and let us choose the readings for the whole Mass and this made the whole experience even more special. Something we will remember forever is the magical moment our eyes met in church”, they said. Phyllisienne wore a dress inspired by one worn by ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ in the TV series Reign. She and her mother paid WeddingBells a visit. “After seeing a photo, Marquita proudly showed me a classic ivorycoloured, long-sleeved, A-line lace dress. I instantly fell in love, tried it on and that was
it!” Phyllisienne exclaimed. Simple, ivory satin, low-heeled, pointed pumps, a threemetre tulle and lace veil with a tiara, also fromWeddingBells, completed a truly Tudor look. She also wore a pair of silver and pearl stud earrings from Sterling, a birthday present from one of her bridesmaids, and carried a bouquet of white roses, calla lillies and orchids, together with contrasting red berries to fit a Christmas themed-wedding, made beautifully by Il-Warda flower shop. Although she is not a make-up person, Phyllisienne really appreciated how Sarah Doublet, her make up artist, calmly and patiently gave her the natural look she wanted, in the shades she chose. Sarah also did the make up for the bride’s mother and her bridal party. Priscilla Chalker was makeup of Josmar’s mother’s make-up artist. »
I DO 65
» Chantelle Barbara created graceful upstyles for Phyllisiene’s hair and her party. She chose red nails by LushNails, Qormi, because they were unconventional and contrasted beautifully with her ivory dress. Josmar hired a Lorenz Cerimonia suit from Aristocrat, as they had the particular jacquard fabric collection he liked. He chose a navy blue suit and ivory shirt, and a tie with a pin. The couple exchanged wedding bands from Vascas; Phyllisienne’s a plain yellow gold and Josmar’s a mix of white and yellow brushed gold. A RECEPTION WITH A HINT OF CHRISTMAS The wedding party travelled in cars from Borg Garage to the reception, at Giardini Lambrosa, which was beautifully decorated by the owners themselves, in the couples’ choice of burgundy and gold, with Christmas decorations such as, poinsettias, baubles, a Christmas tree, naturally, and a large silver crib! “We only topped up with flowers, by Il-Warda Flower Shop”, they added. On the day of the wedding Josmar sent Phyllisienne a bouquet of roses, from the same florist: “With a note to show her I was thinking of her on our special day and couldn’t wait to see her walk down the aisle“, he explained. They couple were very happy with the service and the catering from Elia Caterers, who also made their cake – a three-tier almond/Christmas fruit/carrot cake; decorated with ivory sugar paste in a drop design with a touch of gold. It was simple yet sophisticated. »
Also contributing to Phyllisienne and Josmar’s special day was Savina Creations.

Their first dance was quite emotional. The song F’Qalbi, was written and arranged by special friends. “We decided to go for dance lessons at Plethora Dance which in our opinion is worth the money; every couple should do it. The song, plus the naturally choregraphed dance made the it very special for us. We can’t praise Plethora enough!” the couple enthused. Zone 5 band provided the music. Josmar and Phyllisienne decided to plan their wedding themselves, two years ahead. “We had all the time we needed to view, book and alter whatever we wanted. Thank goodness, both our families were very supportive and made it much easier”, they remembered. Many special and emotional moments stand out for Phyllisienne and Josmar, including helping everybody get ready and her mother looking absolutely beautiful in a teal outfit. For their honeymoon they chose Vienna as it always looks beautiful at Christmas time. We spent a week, including New Year’s Eve, and also visited Bratislava and Salzburg, which were both covered in snow. Phyllisienne’s sister, who works in hospitality, helped them choose the beautiful Le Meridien Wienhotel. “Our wedding ceremony meant us two are united, in marriage, the start of our family, loving each other through thick and thin and, at the same time, enhancing our relationship with God”, the couple concluded.

ADVERTORIAL
The 2020 wedding INTERNATIONAL WEDDING TRENDS FOR THE COMING YEAR
T
hink back to the best wedding you’ve ever been to. What was it that makes it stand out in your mind? Was it the dress, the flowers, the cake, the venue? In Malta we tend to get invited to a lot of weddings that can result in entertainment fatigue. Taking inspiration from the latest wedding reports and findings from floral trends and dresses to fashion and interior trends, we’ve pulled together the must-have and most exciting wedding trends for the coming year. INTIMATE SETTINGS Gone are the days when a wedding party was a list of business partners of the bride and groom’s parents. Today’s wedding party want to spend the day with their nearest and dearest and that means ditching the guest list as long as your arm and going for smaller, more intimate celebrations. Couples can spend their budget more lavishly on a smaller group. Think seated dinners in the garden or even in the magnificent ballroom.
Meghan Markle to thank for that. Her dress was elegant, chic and modern, with an incredible lengthy veil. And did you know that you now get pockets in your wedding dress? Sales for wedding dresses with pockets went up by 83% in the UK last year alone. They’re perfect for hiding your phone, a bit of lippy and maybe even a sneaky tissue! Simple and, above all, comfortable is the way to go in 2020. So much so that you could be wearing trainers on your special day. Companies like Converse, Kate Spade and Jimmy Choo are working the bridal trainer into their repertoire. Think diamonds, sparkles and bespoke designs. What could be better than comfort on the day?
THE DRESS The simple and unfussy bridal gown has topped the year’s trends and we have
THE WEDDING BOUQUET Flowers provide an uplift to any wedding getup. 2020 will see brides shying away from traditional bouquets and going large. Large bouquets with larger varieties and what’s more is you don’t need to stick to the traditional. Why not try something a little different and go for flowers grown locally?
