W
herever a wedding is held, either modern or traditional, a couple will be asked if they are willing to take each other in marriage. A mutual consent sees them beginning what everyone anticipates will be a lifetime of happiness together. But, before they even begin to plan the actual ceremony and all the celebrations, an equally valid question will have to be answered and this is the all important proposal.
IT STARTS WITH A QUESTION
So, in our first issue for 2023 we’re focusing on step one of the long wedding journey because, thanks to your wedding stories and social media, it has become very clear how much a proper proposal means. And that there are as many examples of a perfect proposal as there are couples! We are featuring one truly unorthodox, one impossible and two traditional examples of this timeless custom from the middle ages to the present day. And we’re joined by Sarah Zerafa, whose own breath-taking proposal experience set the bar for romance at an all time high. On page 31 she shares how it felt to be faced, completely unwittingly, with answering one of the most important questions of her life! And we really hope this will prove an inspiration to anyone who is still wondering how, when and where to pop the question. Now, like all other newly engaged couples, Sarah and David have their wedding to plan and we are thrilled to say that they will be sharing some of the excitement of it all in our issues to come.

ADVICE
DON’T SAY ‘YES’TO THE STRESS QUESTION: WHAT'S THE FIRST THING TO REMEMBER WHEN PLANNING YOUR WEDDING? ANSWER: PANIC CAN BE AVOIDED.
I
t’s too easy to imagine so many doom scenarios that you become tempted to just elope, but that would spoil it for everyone else! Simply remember that this is yours and your partner’s wedding. Suggestions from your nearest and dearest are fine, but they should not be allowed to change your final choices and plans. Of course, whoever is paying for the wedding will expect to have some input it’s only fair, so you should be prepared for some give and take. And if there are any real deal breakers asking a neutral family member or friend to mediate will take the pressure off you both. He or she would be able to put your case without getting too personal and emotional. Being flexible is not losing control, so relax. When it comes to guests, everyone wants to put your happiness first. But they’ll also want to feel comfortable wearing something they think makes them look their best. Be clear on what you think are vital dress details then allow for, and enjoy, any eccentricities they may display. They are celebrating your happiness, so try and see ‘interesting’ outfits as quaint or amusing. And ignore the plastic, peeping out of huge handbags, ready to receive the finger food Aunty had no time to stuff into her mouth. Every family has an embarrassing relative, so let them have their day too. Don’t be put off either by the inevitable person who begins every sentence with: “Of course, for my wedding I had bla, bla, bla”. Yours is going to be the best wedding ever, no matter what. Cancel all your concerns by considering the three Cs
◊ CASH In the current climate any guest whose idea of a good wedding is influenced by how much it costs is so not worth their invitation. And any couple who feel they must spend a life-changing amount to create the right impression are, perhaps, losing sight of what being married is really for? The happiest and most memorable weddings are not necessarily those that cost the earth, or leave a couple struggling later
8 I DO
when other financial demands appear. Believe it or not, neither your guests’ enjoyment of your wedding, or the length of your marriage, will ultimately depend on what was paid for it.
◊ COMMUNICATION If you’ve been planning your wedding forever, and have a clear picture of every detail of it in your mind, start by delegating certain tasks to family and friends. This will make them feel involved and help solve problems as soon as they appear. Choose your teams early and allocate their rolls according to their talents. Plan meetings, sometimes separately, sometimes all together for updates. Make these fun so everyone will look forward to them.
◊ CONFIDENCE Weddings are one of the biggest causes of self doubt and second guessing. But there are so many ways to boost your confidence, so you can arrive at your wedding with all the panache of a celebrity on a red carpet. Of the hundreds of techniques available for overcoming your nerves and anxieties you will certainly find one that will be right for you. Go for it. You have everything to gain. Practise the skills you will need on the day, like walking down the aisle, and dancing, until any nerves vanish. But make sure you wear your wedding shoes each time. Resolve to take any mishap in your stride. The chances are that no one will notice it anyway. And, honestly, you won’t be the first person to forget your spouse’s name, or muddle the words of your vows, or actually misspell your name when you sign the register. Focus on why you are having a wedding. Because it is for you to celebrate, in your own unique and personal way, that this is just the beginning of your happily ever after.

THE BRIDES, IN OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT. Our well-travelled model, MARIA MEDVEDCHUK, is happy both in front of and behind the camera.
Where do you live? I was born and raised in one of the most beautiful cities in Russia – Saint Petersburg, which is also its cultural capital. In 2013 I spontaneously moved to Hong Kong, and that fascinating and multicultural city became my second home. At the beginning of 2023, I decided to spend some time exploring Europe to improve my proficiency in English, and that’s how I arrived here in Malta– which is where I currently live. Where would you like to live? I think I’m still looking for that special place. I can definitely say that sunshine and the ocean are really important to me. I’m just much more productive and happier in a tropical or temperate climate. What is the happiest job or career you could have? I’ve been working as a model for over a decade, and I still love it. But now I’ve switched my focus to photography and art. I’d like to continue learning skills in these industries to satisfy my own personal growth. How do you like to relax? The sun, the sand and the sea – I’ve always felt very connected to nature. Spending time outdoors is my favourite way to relax and recover. Who are the people who make you happiest, and for what reason? I find happiness in many of the simpler pleasures in life – spending quality time with my family and friends, the warmth of a sunny day, the breeze near the ocean, travelling and waking up in a new country, listening to my favourite music. What could the world do without, and what does it need more of? The world, can do with a lot less war and a lot more love, compassion and awareness. How do you feel about social media, and what do you mostly use it for? Social media has provided a great platform to connect people, as well as help businesses to understand their customers and improve the products and services. For better or worse, it is a massive part of our life. I know that my generation mostly uses Instagram, and I also like it. But we shouldn’t forget, that the best things happen when you are offline!

JEWELLERY
Jewels, fit for a bride T he jewellery a bride wears for her wedding is full of symbolism. Will it be a sentimental heirloom, a gift from her parents or fiancé, or her something new chosen especially as a future treasure and reminder of such an important day in her life? So much goes into creating a whole bridal look. The dress is everything, its overall effect enhanced by a train or veil, headdress, or tiara to compliment every detail. But, equally important is the jewellery – stunning statement pieces or exquisitely simple creations for complete perfection.
We found the Bridal Collection, by Sarah Gauci so enchanting that we asked her to share what inspires her and how she helps brides, worldwide, make their unique choices.
FIRSTLY , WHAT PIECES OF JEWELLERY DO BRIDES CHOOSE MOSTLY TO WEAR FOR THEIR WEDDINGS? The pieces of jewellery brides choose vary depending on their personal style, cultural traditions, and wedding ensemble. Brides often choose necklaces to complement the neckline of their dress, whether it is a delicate pendant, a statement necklace, or a strand of pearls. Necklaces can add a touch of elegance, sparkle, or sentimentality to a bride’s overall look. Earrings are also popular as a statement piece or a subtle accent. They can frame the face and add a touch of sparkle or colour. Brides can choose from a variety of styles, including studs, hoops, chandeliers, or dangle earrings, to suit their personal style and wedding theme. Bracelets are a very versatile. Worn on the wrist they can complement other pieces. Choices range from bangles, cuffs and tennis bracelets, to charm bracelets, adding a glamorous or sentimental touch to their wedding day look. A bride often chooses hair accessories to add a touch of sparkle, elegance, or cultural significance to her hairstyle. Hairpins, combs, headbands, tiaras, or floral hair accessories can all enhance the bride’s hairstyle and complement her overall look. It is important to note that jewellery may vary depending on cultural traditions, personal style, and the wedding theme. The key is for brides to choose pieces that reflect their individuality or hold personal significance. In recent years, brides have become more adventurous and openminded, so while traditional designs still hold significance, many brides are now exploring alternative options to show their unique style and personality. One of the reasons for this is that brides today look for ways to make their wedding day truly their own; to express their individuality in meaningful jewellery that shows their personal taste. This has led to a growing interest in unconventional designs that go beyond the traditional diamond engagement ring or classic pearl necklace. Brides are now considering jewellery with unique gemstones, unconventional metals, and innovative designs. They may look for coloured gemstones, or even birthstones, as their centre stone, or choose alternative metals and mixed metals for their wedding jewellery. They may decide on minimalist and modern pieces, bohemian or
26 I DO
vintage- inspired styles, even customdesigned jewellery with a special meaning for them that both complements their wedding ensemble and reflects their personal style to tell their unique love story. Social media and fashion trends also influence the move towards less traditional designs. Fashion blogs and celebrity weddings inspire more unique and unconventional designs. APART FROM THEIR DRESS AND HAIR STY LE WHAT ELSE SHOULD BRIDES CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING JEWELLERY FOR THEIR WEDDING? Jewellery should enhance a bride’s look by complementing her skin tone, hair colour and overall frame. Gold or rose gold, compliments a bride whose skin has warm undertones. Silver or platinum suits cool undertones. Similarly, a bride with a petite frame needs delicate jewellery, while bold and statement pieces work well for brides who are taller or curvier.
It is also crucial to consider the setting of the wedding as the ambiance can influence what jewellery would be appropriate. The wedding theme also plays a role, as does the time of day because light levels can be an important factor in showing jewellery at its best. HAS THERE BEEN A NEW INTEREST IN GEMSTONES OF LESS-USED COLOURS IN RECENT Y EARS? In recent years, there has been a surge in popularity when it comes to incorporating birthstones or gemstones with unique colours in bridal jewellery. They hold personal significance for many brides and couples, who may choose to include their birthstones, or gemstones with unique colours, in wedding rings, earrings, or pendants, to offer a fresh twist to traditional bridal jewellery. Brides and couples want unique options to create one-of-a-kind, meaningful pieces for sentimental value using gemstones in less
commonly seen colours for their fresh and vibrant appeal. WHAT STONES AND MATERIALS DO Y OU USE IN Y OUR COLLECTIONS? I use a combination of high-quality materials such as Swarovski crystals, pearls and semi-precious gemstones to create unique and meaningful bridal jewellery that will hold a sentimental value. I carefully select these materials to ensure that each piece is crafted to the highest standards. Swarovski crystals are used to add a touch of sparkle and glamour. Pearls, known for their lustrous beauty, and semi-precious gemstones like amethyst, aquamarine, topaz and garnet, which offer a wide range of colours, are also incorporated in my designs to create colourful, vibrant and meaningful pieces that will hold a sentimental value. I strive to use ethically sourced and high-quality materials in my creations, so brides can cherish their jewellery for years to come.

Back to the future
C
ocktail trends for 2023 are looking back to the nineties and yet staying bang in the present with new and different ingredients and flavours, just perfect for wedding parties. Mixologists are finding fresh ways to serve old favourites and creating new recipes which acknowledge the need for health and safety. Delicious mixes now include low alcohol ingredients, spritzes, vegetable and fruit juices and nectars, and even coffee and tea. This means plenty of wonderful creations for everyone. Here are some recipes for classic and new cocktails with a truly 2023 vibe.

45ml

15ml
simple syrup
60ml
gin
2-3 dashes
orange bitters raspberries, lemon wheels and mint sprigs to garnish
METHOD – Muddle the 5 raspberries with the simple syrup and lemon juice in the bottom of a shaker. Add the gin, orange bitters and ice and shake to mix. Strain the contents of the shaker into an ice-filled glass. Top with sparkling water, stir gently and garnish with the raspberries, lemon and mint as liked. Make a traditional simple syrup by using one part water to one part white sugar. If you use brown sugar keep the same ratio. Heat the water first, before adding the sugar, the water doesn’t need to be boiling. When the sugar has dissolved let the syrup cool and pour it into a glass container. It can be kept in a refrigerator for two to three weeks.
PROPOSALS
Will you marry me? In the 21st century proposals are not what they used to be.
Mozart and Marie Antoinette as children
“S
o, when are we going to get married?”, “Let's actually get married!” even, “We ought to/might as well/for the sake of the children get married.” This is, fairly often, how many couples now pop the question. Where’s the romance, the ambience? On land or sea or in the air; at an extravagant location with fireworks and fanfares, or somewhere secret and secluded, they should be there. Never underestimate the importance of these two elements on the first step to married life. And, just for amusement, here are some less than traditional proposals which had life-changing results for the happy couples, but also made quite an impact on history itself.
Archduke, Maximilian and Mary, with the famous ring
Take the ring, a vital prop for any aspiring fiancé, which often features a diamond. This is thanks to Austrian Archduke, Maximilian who in 1477, went down on one knee to present the young Mary of Burgundy with a ring depicting the letter M formed from carved diamonds. To this day, diamonds are the most popular stones on engagement rings. Mary’s father had originally promised her to a French prince, but she and Maximilian kept their love alive through letters, and when Papa died the then penniless Maximilian set off to France to claim her. Legend tells how all the people he encountered on his journey gave him gifts of silver and gold, so he could buy a ring for his love. And through his marriage Maximilian became an independent prince and subsequently the Holy Roman Emperor. The tragedy of young love is clearly illustrated by the childhood association of Marie Antoinette, youngest child of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. When the young musical genius was in Vienna, to perform before the Imperial Family, he and some of the children ended up fooling around after the concert. Mozart fell over, landing in the arms of little Marie. It was ‘love at first sight’ and he promptly proposed that they be married.
They were both seven years old. Marriage would have been out of the question until Marie was 14. But if this sweet tale was actually true and a wedding had taken place Mozart might not have died in his 30s, of one of the common disease of that age, and Marie Antoinette could have avoided the guillotine. And if ever a proposal deserved to be turned down, consider how anyone could dream of using his death to convince his girlfriend she couldn’t live without him. But a wealthy 30-year-old Russian businessman actually went to the trouble of arranging a meeting with his girl friend, at which she turned up to find an accident scene and the news that he was dead. However, the crashed car, blood and ambulance were all the work of a stuntman, makeup artist and other movie technicians he had hired. The would-be fiancé then leapt out of the ambulance, arms full of flowers and balloons and carrying a ring. As sick jokes go this is probably as bad as it gets. And yet far from passing out, or walking off, the young lady recovered from her shock and anger and actually accepted the proposal.

THE ‘PERFECT’ PROPOSAL Most of Malta, and probably beyond, sighed at the truly romantic proposal content creator Sarah Zerafa received last Christmas, so we asked her about this fantastic occasion.
I
ARE Y OU A ROMANTIC PERSON AT HEART? think both Dave and I are romantic people, which was surprising at first. Since I was a little girl life always felt like a fairytale. I blame it on all the Disney movies I used to watch, haha! But as I obviously grew older, I started to realise that Disney movies are far from what reality and adult life is. However, I never stopped romanticising life. When I met Dave everything fell into place. I finally met someone who dreams and loves as big as I do. I met someone maybe a little bit more romantic than I am, which was a shock at first, haha. His romantic side made me fall more and more in love with him. WHAT, FOR Y OU IS SO IMPORTANT ABOUT A WEDDING PROPOSAL? I always dreamed about how beautiful it would be to share such a special moment with someone. I have to be honest, I was never lucky when it came to love/relationships. So for a long period of time I was certain I
would never experience this with someone. Until Dave came along and as they say ‘swept me of my feet’ haha. My grandma used to sew wedding dresses as a profession, and while mum used to be at work I used to stay with her while all the beautiful brides-to- be had their fittings. So you can imagine all the scenarios I used to play in my head haha! AND WHEN Y OUR FIANCÈ PROPOSED, HOW DID IT LIVE UP TO Y OUR DREAMS...OR BEY OND? Beyond any dream or scenario I had thought of in my head haha. The most special thing about it was that I had no clue, no idea, no intuition, no feeling, that he was going to propose, which made everything even more special. And he proposed in Paris! My forever favourite city. It honestly couldn’t have been any more perfect. I also loved how intimate it was. It was just us lost in such a special moment. *There were no photographers or confetti or candles or restaurants booked. I remember I didn’t want to move from the spot he had proposed to me at. I literally stayed there for hours looking at the ring and soaking it all in.

HOW QUALITY COUNTS
T
here really is only one thing couples need to think about when seeking something as important as their wedding venue– quality. How can they achieve this, perfectly throughout every aspect of the event? The easiest way is to first decide on a theme and everything they want to portray it exactly. Then tick off the following must-haves. If they hold their wedding ceremony in the same place as their reception it will have to be licensed to hold a wedding, and have an exceptional choice of areas to stage this vital part of their day. They need a venue that can create their dream setting, indoors or out, in any season, for a charming, intimate wedding or a spectacular affair for hundreds. One that is beautiful enough on its own, but can also be dressed with fabulous decorations and flowers, with areas for perfect photos, and quiet, romantic spaces for guests, and themselves, to spend drinking in the beauty and romance of it all. There must be enchanting gardens that bloom on a sunny day and stars shining on a clear summer night. Oh and don’t forget how important is to have parking nearby. There have to be well equipped facilities; so good that be it music, dancing, even a cabaret, the sound system is state of the art. And if things are only warming up by 11pm there must be an area where the entertainment can go on until the early hours. Then there is the all important food and drink. You have to be able to discuss and decide on a menu, and the cake, which is truly based on the very best of ingredients cooked and served with pride and care. Now more and more couples are finding special ways to carry their wedding further than just one day think of having a venue where you can also organise special cocktail hours and receptions for destination wedding guests to meet before the big day, a long after party for those who just don’t want their wedding to end, or even a fun preview event to thank witnesses, bride’s and groom’s parties, and families for just being there for you. Finally, it’s no use having all these wonderful ideas unless you choose a venue whose staff have the experience, enthusiasm and attention to every detail which shows you immediately that you have made the right choice. The team behind Villa Arrigo uphold a reputation for making each and every couple’s wedding absolutely amazing. They have held it since 1986.They continually adapt to the changes time brings, and celebrate the traditions that will surely last forever. In fact, their passion for excellence has taken them on a very exciting journey! And you do not get so far without earning and deserving the trust of every couple who dream of their perfect wedding, then find that the very people they need to create it for them also share it with them.

I DO 33
It is safe to say that no other piece of jewellery has quite the same vibe as a diamond engagement ring.
The sparkle of love
T
he epitome of romance, diamonds, in all colours and cuts, are 99 percent the first stone that comes to mind when a bride dreams of a proposal, a groom plans a special surprise, or a couple decide to choose a ring together. There is so much to consider when buying any diamond pieces. So it is essential to go to the best retailer for expert advice. I DO asked LEE SATARIANO, one of Malta’s most prominent diamond experts, where to begin. ARE COUPLES TODAY LOOKING FOR LESS TRADITIONAL DESIGNS FOR THEIR WEDDING JEWELLERY AND HOW CAN THEY FIND OR CREATE THEM? In today’s modern age, couples are looking for unique and personal ways to celebrate their love. One such way is by designing custom made engagement rings that reflect their individual style and preferences. At Art Diamond Boutique, we offer a personalised service and attention to detail which ensures that every client’s dream engagement ring becomes a reality. We believe the journey of creating a customised engagement ring should be just as memorable as the ring itself. Our process begins with a one-on-one consultation to understand a client’s vision for the ring. We take them through the 4Cs of diamond selection – clarity, carat weight, and colour, as well as certifications, ie the details, of other coloured stones that they may choose, like emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. I personally, oversee the high-end combinations of the 4Cs
and ensure that every stone meets our rigorous standards. We believe that knowledge and education are critical in selecting the perfect stone for every client. Next, we move on to the design stage, where we either provide a pre-existing mount or work with clients on a custom-made design. We narrow down all the details and provide them with a 4D design, so they can visualise the final product. We want each one to feel fully involved and make sure that every detail is exactly as they imagined it. THE COUPLE
Salome & Byron 30 July 2022 Salome Camilleri, 31, a scientist at WasteServ, and Byron Camilleri, 34, Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reforms and Equality, were married at Fgura Parish Church.
B
A BIRTHDAY PROPOSAL yron proposed to Salome back in April 2020, a day after her birthday, with the help of her best friend, and eventual maid of honour. “I was annoyed with him for not having bought me a present for my birthday the day before – it was his plan all along to annoy me”, she remembers. “We always dreamt of having a big wedding to celebrate our love with friends and family”, she continued. They had no particular theme – colours were kept very neutral with white, gold and champagne chosen for the decor and the bridal team’s outfits. Byron chose his favourite colour, navy blue, for the invitations, and insisted on a personalised wax gold/bronze stamp which was pretty time consuming to apply, but added a pretty, classic touch, to each invite. Salome focused on the wording, layout and design, including the quote from Byron’s favourite TV series, How I met your mother: “It’s going to be legen...wait for it...dary!” repeated by Barney Stinson, played by Neil Patrick Harris. One of their first conversations was about the show so it seemed fitting to include a reference to it. For souvenirs, the couple chose something small yet practical, scented wax tablets, individually decorated with dried flowers/herbs, and handmade by Charlene from Soap Cafe, for their guests to hang in their wardrobe or bathroom. A HOMETOWN WEDDING Understandably Byron’s mind was set on Fgura Parish Church for the wedding Mass. He has always been firmly active in the community and served seven years as mayor before being elected to Parliament. The car ride to the church with her father was a sentimental one for Salome. Both were simply in awe of the 1958 Chevrolet Impala, from Tony Dalli at Dalton’s. »

» “Walking up the aisle was pretty emotional for me, seeing my family and friends with gleaming faces made me so happy, whilst walking hand-in hand with my dear father. When we got to the groom, it was a sweet shared moment between the groom and my dad with the groom jokingly stating that from that moment onwards I’m now the groom’s ‘problem’”, she remembers. LESS IS MORE Salome wore a simple, clean-cut, satin-finish, body hugging dress from Eva Lendel‘s ‘Less is More’ collection, from Eva Mariee. To complement it, shoes, veil, jewellery and hair accessories were kept pretty minimal – ivory satin pointed mules with pearl details and a plain chiffon blush veil. She also wore two pearls in her hair, and drop pearl earrings, by ZsaZsa, and carried a cascading bouquet of calla lilies in green foliage. Byron chose his favourite navy blue as the primary colour for a custom made suit by Bortex, but added a modern twist of black satin panelling and a low set blazer button. And it fitted like a glove. He completed his look with a satin black bow and black patent shoes, also from Bortex. Alencia’s ring designer helped Salome design a ring to match her engagement one. Byron’s band was a plain white gold ring. HERITAGE AND A VIEW Salome and Byron wanted a large-ish, outside venue, ideally with Grand Harbour views and an open layout to allow them more flexibility. They visited Villa Bighi, Garden & Esplanade, part of Heritage Malta, and knew instantly this was the place they wanted their wedding reception to take place. They chose Neriku as their caterer, having previously been simply blown away by the quality and presentation of the food they served. “Anne Marie was so considerate and proactive when planning the wedding”, Salome said. »

» Adding: “Our cake was a three tier cake, pretty classic, all white, with a large fondant-ruffle decorated bottom tier. A touch of gold was added with the introduction of the gold rhinestones ribbon, and gold acrylic cake charms with our initials.” They also opted for a gin cocktail bar, serving delicious ice-cold drinks which were undeniably a favourite with their guests, managed and run by Damian Muscat of Damian’s cocktails. Instead of the traditional guest book, Byron came up with the idea of easels displaying custom-made framed photos from when they started dating. Guests were welcome to write on the mounts and the frames will eventually hang in their living room display of photos from their wedding day.
IMPRESSIVE ENTERTAINMENT Salome and Byron’s primary wedding focus was undoubtedly on entertainment. “We chose entertainers who we had no doubt were able to pump up the vibe and get the crowd going.” The line-up included The Traveller’s, Ira Losco, who also sang in the church, Ivan Grech, Aidan Cassar and DJ Koroma. Selecting a date for the wedding, including the two previous dates cancelled because of Covid the year before, depended on the Travellers being available. Even before Byron had proposed they decided their first dance to be Ersaq fil-Qrib. A dear friend Marlon Bianco Galea, helped them practise for first dance. »

» “We can confidently say that neither of us have any future in dancing. The flowing train at the back of the wedding dress was winding up with every turn and twist, so most of the dance moves were difficult to execute, but we enjoyed every second of it. I was not looking forward to the dance, but now looking back at the photos, I am so happy we actually had a dance prepared and have some lovely photos worth framing”, Salome confirmed. »

The couple changed partners and Salome danced with her father, while Byron danced with his mother. “It was very sentimental to both of us”, they said. AND MANY THANKS GO TO... The videographers/photographers Gabriel Cassar, and Jason Borg for also capturing all the shots with the bridal team and bride’s parents which are truly cherished. Maid of honour, Tamara Webb, and groomsman, Dustin Camilleri, childhood friends of the bride and groom respectively who each prepared a heartfelt speech honouring both the bride and groom individually and with as a sweet toast to them both as they started their journey as husband and wife. Yana & Daryl 4 June 2022 Yana Pace Decesare, 31, a head of design, and Daryl Azzopardi, 27, a financial accountant, were married in San Girgor Parish Church, Sliema.
Y
SIMPLE BEGINNINGS ana and Daryl met on her late father’s birthday and knew early on they would be life partners. On their third anniversary, having bought a house and planned to join their families and truly show their unconditional love and commitment to each other, they went for a beautiful dinner at The Villa. At a special, private table, overlooking Balluta Bay, Yana sensed Daryl was a little tense but did not expect what would happen. Their waiter offered to take a photo, and as they were posing Daryl asked for her hand in marriage. Having never wanted anything over the top, being on their own, enjoying each other’s company in the beautiful setting with a stunning view was all Yana had ever wanted. She was quite speechless and it was an absolutely perfect way to propose. SUMMER ELEGANCE Yana and Daryl wanted a simple, romantic and elegant, early summer wedding, with a beautiful garden setting with fairy lights. As a graphic designer by profession, Yana always dreamed of designing her own wedding invitations, signage, souvenirs, tags etc. She chose a colour palette and font that really exuded the wedding theme, sage green, white and taupe colours for all the signage, which matched both the bridesmaid dresses, and the greenery of the venue itself. “I also illustrated lined flowers which featured on our invitations, and I kept them very simple and classic”, she said, adding that instead of souvenirs, the couple donated what they would have spent to the Association for Abandoned Animals, who they are very passionate about. »

» And Yana designed bookmarks with the same colours and illustrations used throughout the wedding to hand out. At a busy time of year for weddings the couple were lucky to spot the beautiful church San Girgor, in a small side road in Sliema. They loved its bright interior with the white walls, arches, and beautiful wooden benches, and immediately booked it.

BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS Yana and Daryl’s service was held in English and the family and friends from abroad who joined them on their special day truly appreciated being able to follow the Mass and everything that was going on. “The most special part to me was the moment my mother and I held hands and walked down the aisle together to Ave Maria – it was one of the most beautiful moments of my life which I will forever cherish. »
» “I was so nervous before we entered, but from the photos you can see my face beaming with happiness, and all the nerves had gone away as I saw Daryl waiting for me at the altar. It was really special”, Yana remembers. She wore an Ivory and Co, strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline gown, clinched-in waist and a skirt of layers of white tulle, with subtle details of lace flowers and small delicate buttons down the corseted back. Her jewellery was a simple pair of diamond earrings, lent by her best friend and bridesmaid, a delicate diamond matching headpiece and a diamond bracelet, a gift from her mother. »

» And she carried a bouquet, by Floreal, of white peonies, white roses, baby’s breath and eucalyptus leaves and added an old photo locket her mother had as a young girl, and a photo of her father. “It would have been my biggest wish to have him walk down the aisle with me on our special day, and although I was so proud to have my mother walk with me instead, I could at least hold his photo with me as I walked, which really made it special for us”, she explained. Daryl wore a classic suit Gagliardi black and white tux from Bortex. He also wore Yana’s late father’s cufflinks, which meant a lot to them both as they have such sentimental value. A SECRET GARDEN SETTING A gorgeous 1956 baby pink Cadillac took the newly-weds from the church to the venue.
They loved that it was really different from traditional wedding cars. They has a fantastic time singing a-long to their wedding playlist, honking the horn and waving to people who were really excited to see them pass by. Having picked the first venue they viewed, Limestone Heritage, Daryl and Yana chose the garden area. Its stunning green lawn, cobblestone floors, and a grand tree in the centre were all they wanted. Fairy lights around the enclosing walls and décor by A&S signs and floral pieces by Floreal, created a beautiful ambiance. As vegetarians Yana and Daryl noted how Corinthia made sure to give them many different options, all absolutely delicious. Their simple three-tier cake, covered in white fondant and decorated with fresh white roses and eucalyptus leaves, looked. beautiful. Their guests really enjoyed the photo booth
as a fun, interactive activity with a souvenir of the wedding to keep or post on social media. After the speeches one of their bridesmaids introduced their first dance. The song was L.O.V.E by Frank Sinatra. Yana explains, “I wasn’t really looking for one of those overly cheesy songs, I really wanted something that was a classic, sounded happy and represented us. We didn’t take any dancing lessons, so we practised in our living room, with our two dogs as our audience (they were slightly confused). We were really nervous for the dance, we thought we’d make mistakes or step on each other’s toes, especially in my big dress, but it was absolutely perfect, we had fun with it, we included a few twirls and a dip at the end, and the most important thing is that we enjoyed it as if no one was watching.” Then even some of their older guests got up to dance which was wonderful to see. »

Natalie & Jack 12 May 2022 Natalie Frieze, 30, a business developer support worker, and Jack MacDonald, 31, a railway welder, were married at Villa Bologna, Attard.
I
AN EASTERN PROMISE t was while Natalie and Jack were on a family holiday on the island of Koh Tao, in Thailand, in 2018, that Jack proposed. Natalie thinks he had ideas to do it near a waterfall, but the thought of the ring slipping out of his fingers meant he opted for a private dinner by the sea. “I was totally not expecting it and had the wrong colour of nails which were not bridal like at all. It was lovely having my family there to celebrate with us into the early hours at a beach party”, she remembers. DESTINATION WITH A DIFFERENCE When Natalie mentioned she wanted a wedding abroad, a family member, who visited the island, suggested Malta. Natalie logged onto Google and what she found meant that, without ever having been in Malta before, she knew instantly that’s where she and Jack should get married. And so they booked the wedding venue. As they were planning a wedding abroad the couple had plane fridge magnets made for their save the dates, with their names and original wedding date engraved on them. Although the wedding was postponed a year due to Covid, their friends and family loved them as a small memento to keep. The instant Natalie saw Villa Bologna for the first time and realised how stunning the venue was, she wanted it as the couple’s choice for their wedding ceremony. And the beautiful sky blue of the villa’s windows and doors even inspired her choice for the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses. »

» For her own dress, Natalie liked a lot of styles and thought choosing her wedding dress would be easy. But then she fell pregnant. After trying on several styles she knew she had to pick a dress quickly. On her next appointment, with her mum, she fell in love with the one she picked. The dress had sequins all over and a plunging neckline, but it was still nicely simple and suited her figure. “We knew when the sun shone on the dress it would be stunning”, Natalie confirmed. She kept her jewellery simple too, with drop earrings and a bracelet loaned by Jack’s mum. Jack wore his family tartan the MacDonald of the Isles ancient hunting. It is mostly green with hints of blue, which also tied in nicely with the bridesmaids’ dresses and the venue. As Scots, the couple wanted the groom, groomsmen and page boy to all wear traditional Scottish dress and they had cravats and other accessories in blue to match. The couple’s baby boy, Austin, wore a mini kilt and with the help of a decorated baby walker walked in procession with Natalie’s man of honour, Stephen and her bridesmaids. To tie in with the colour theme Natalie carried a bouquet of white roses and greenery. “My friend, Gemma, bought me a bouquet charm with a photo of my Nana, who sadly passed away, so she would be remembered and be part of my special day throughout”, said Natalie. »

» For their walking out song Jack and Natalie chose Sweet Child of Mine to walk out with their little son. And as Natalie loved the traditional Maltese buses, which are not something that’s common in Scotland, they chose the blue one, again to match their theme, for transport for their family and friends. BEAUTIFUL VIEWS Wherever they celebrated Natalie and Jack kept the decor simple, thinking, rightly that the views, buildings and beautiful weather speak for themselves. And they fell in love with Oka’s at The Villa, Balluta Bay, with its views overlooking the bay and Carmelite Church bells ringing when they arrived, as if it was meant to be. The venue has recently been taken over by Xara Collection and, as Natalie exclaimed. “The food was out of this world. All my guests said it was the best food they have ever had and definitely at a wedding. Nobody left the reception hungry. We had canapés on arrival, risotto to start, fillet of beef or chicken. We also had

after dinner bites – the fish and chips being a firm favourite.” Their guests loved the all inclusive bar. “We even managed to run out of some spirits. The Scots know how to party,” the couple added. And a DJ kept the celebrations going with the couple’s playlist of songs they would like. Wisely, Natalie and Jack had a wedding planner to help with the legal paperwork and for the duration of the ceremony. Wed in Malta’s Alexia and Tiziana were amazing throughout, always on hand for advice. AN UNFORGETTABLE TRIP From start to finish Natalie and Jack’s first visit to Malta was unforgettable. It was also Austin’s first holiday abroad, and they celebrated Jack’s birthday the day after the wedding with a trip to the Blue Lagoon. The most special part for them both was having friends and family there, they confirmed. Adding, “We cannot thank our family and friends enough for travelling to Malta with us and celebrating our special day.”
