MOOD BOARD inally, its summer again. it is my favourite season as we have longer days that we can enjoy relaxing on the beach. It is the season to relax and celebrate for no particular reason.
And summer weddings are the best, I think. Couples can enjoy their special day with their loved ones with that extra splash of colour, surrounded by guests wearing the most gorgeous colourful dresses that make summer weddings even brighter. Oh and, I forgot to mention that it’s also very hot but that is part of the fun…isn’t it? You will have a good excuse to have a refreshing cocktail bar at your reception and you can also provide your guests with colourful fans to keep them cool.
MY KIND OF SUMMER WEDDING
Some of the items I like for a summer wedding.
In this edition of I DO, we are celebrating the summer season. Some of the features we came up with include a guide for bridesmaid dresses. We partnered up with various local boutiques to show you what they have in stock and what is fashionable at the moment. As per every issue, we have our advice article and the subject for this issue is the importance of communication in marriage. No one is a mind reader, not even your partner, therefore if you would like your spouse to truly understand you just communicate your feelings and thoughts; in an effective way, of course. Read more about this on page 7. For our fabulous photo shoot, we wanted to create a fresh summer fun look and the best way to create such a theme is having children and sweets. We have our handsome pageboy Jacob, and our pretty young bridesmaids Paula and Andrea, accompanying our stunning model Sarah, at the fantastic venue Palazzo Parisio. Bernard managed to capture the perfect shots for this summer photo shoot. We hope to inspire you for your wedding day.
“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep as reality is finally better than your dreams” - Dr. Seuss
We also have the pleasure of meeting with another five couples who chose I DO Magazine to share their memorable day with us. Read more about their love stories, starting on page 23. Finally, as an idea for your getaway, we came up with a couple of tips to follow when booking a cruise for your honeymoon. Enjoy reading I DO Magazine and being inspired for your upcoming wedding. Lots of love,
Claire xx

WORDS FROM THE EXPERT
GOOD
is the key to a
COMMUNICATION STRONG MARRIAGE “What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined... to strengthen each other... to be at one with each other in silent unspeakable (sic) memories.” — George Eliot. Effective communication is a two-way process. Good communication involves both how we send and receive messages. It is a key to interpersonal skills, and learning how we can improve our communication has many benefits. Interpersonal communication is the way in which we exchange information, ideas and emotions with others. It comprises both verbal and non-verbal cues and can take quite a variety of forms i.e. verbal, body language and facial expressions. When we know how to deliver our message clearly and directly, we’re eliminating the opportunity for miscommunication to occur, and less miscommunication means fewer misunderstandings. Everyone is guilty of a few conversation mistakes now and again. Here are a few indicators of poor communication 1. Interrupting others during conversation. 2. Looking at your phone while others are speaking. 3. Rambling without a clear point. 4. Avoiding eye contact. 5. Closed body language. 6. Not listening well to what is being communicated. These are manifestations of poor conversation
etiquette, and will definitely harm the ability to get a point across. On the other hand, effective communication between the couples means: • Spending time together, talking is very important. Studies show that the average couple spends only 20 minutes a week talking to each other. Every couple needs to spend at least 20-30 minutes a day quality time catching up with each other. • Every spouse should use more ‘I’ statements and fewer ‘You’ statements. This decreases the need for the other spouse to defend themselves. • Paying compliments to each other, showing appreciation and being thankful for each other. Learning better, more effective communication skills will help couples to become confident and skilled conversationalists. It will help to improve and create long-lasting relationships. To conclude; may I share this beautiful quote:
“The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.” – Dalai Lama. Pauline Bondin is a senior social worker. I DO 7

our wedding dress is not the only important dress you will choose for your wedding day. Your bridesmaids’ dresses are equally important. Not only must they look great for your wedding but, essentially, you will want them to feel comfortable. Here are some tips to consider when choosing your bridesmaids’ dresses and also some trendy ideas. RESEARCH First of all, you have to do some research so that you are up to date with what is fashionable and what is available on the market. Look in wedding magazines and on bridal websites to know more. BODY TY PE Not everyone’s body shape is the same so you should know your bridesmaids’ body types. You want them to feel at ease and gorgeous in the dresses you choose for them. Dresses that come in different necklines, and lengths, but in the same colour and fabric, may be the best choice for your bridesmaids. So feel free to opt for styles to flatter each body type. STY LE Halter neck, one shoulder, flowing tiers, high slits, cap sleeves, tea-length, sheer fabrics and flutter sleeved are all types of bridesmaid dresses you can opt for. Some can be easily adapted to most body shapes, and are very fashionable at the moment. However make sure to choose dresses that compliment you and will not outshine you. You, as the bride, have to be the main attraction on your wedding day.

COLOUR If you have already chosen the colour theme for your wedding, it will be easier to choose the colour of your bridesmaid dresses. If not, think about the time of year you are getting married in, and see what colours go for that season. Also, it is a good idea if you involve your bridesmaids and let them choose shades that best suit their own styles and complexions. FITTINGS Finding the perfect bridesmaid dresses takes time and careful consideration but it can be an exciting part of your wedding planning. Ideally, you involve your bridesmaids in the process, so that you avoid any misunderstandings; and whatever you do start looking for them early. Take your time, so your bridesmaids will look as beautiful and elegant as you wish them to be.

THE JUNIORS
THE THEME
Paula and Andrea are both very young and are natural stunners. Jacob, on the other hand, is such a cutie and he is a great model.
We wanted to create a summer, fun and rustic look, so we chose to focus on pastel colours like mint, pinks and light blue as our colour scheme. All colours fit the theme and the garden as a backdrop enhanced the whole look.
JUNIOR BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES Paula wore the Ines dress designed in beautiful lace, cut with a high-low hem, layered with net and finished with a sleek satin sash. Andrea wore the Elizabeth glitter dress. It has glitter-flecked lace and floral cut-outs backed with net for fullness and is finished with a ribbon belt. They had matching embellished heeled shoes provided by Monsoon Children.
DECORATIONS & SWEETS To complement the summer-fun theme Miss Ellen’s Sweet Shop used a selection of retro candy, sherbet dib dabs, candy necklaces, ABC, eclairs, milk bottles and midget gems and a delicious doughnut stand.
PAGEBOY OUTFIT Jacob’s outfit comprised a Sterling five- piece suite including a blazer, waistcoat and trousers, crafted in a tonal cotton weave, as well as a shirt and a tie with a travelling print and textured shoes provided by Monsoon Children.
VENUE Palazzo Parisio was the venue. The palazzo itself is breath-taking but the garden area definitely makes a wonderful setting for the perfect wedding day. I DO 21

Samaria & Alan 16 September 2017 Samaria Bezzina, 29, Architect and Alan Borg 32, Administration manager. Their ceremony was held at the Church of the Holy Cross, in Floriana, followed by a reception at The Chophouse, Tigne, Sliema.
I
t was while waiting for an interview that Alan’s cheerful personality caught Samaria’s attention. From then on their beautiful love story began. After being together for five years, their next, natural step forward was to set a date for their wedding day. They chose 16 September, 2017 for their big day. It fitted well between the wedding of Samaria’s sister, and brother, who got married in the same year, and it is also on the same date that her parents were married. The ceremony was held at the Church of the Holy Cross, in Floriana, followed by a reception at The Chophouse, in Tigne, Sliema. “We wanted to opt for something distinctive and out of the norm, and the stunning location overlooking the picturesque Valletta skyline, offered a good mix of indoor and outdoor spaces”, the couple explained. Samaria and Alan opted for a rustic flair to their wedding day. They wanted to have a natural and romantic feel, therefore they chose a palette of burgundy and blush, with touches of green and elements of wood for their wedding theme. Most of the decorative details were handmade by Samaria and her family, to add a personal touch. “My sister, Vincienne, designed every little detail, including the invitations, Mass booklets, souvenir tags, signage and also the guestbook, which she handcrafted on wood herself and assembled with the help of my dad”, Samaria explained. The invitations were printed with the help of the bride’s aunt and uncle at Print Right Ltd. They used the Maltese language and included a poem penned by her sister Dorothy. Another interesting traditional feature they adapted was their means of transport. They used Stephen Scerri’s vintage bus, from Malta Bus Coop Ltd. It was an original and fun way to move around with their bridal team on the day. Samaria’s mum took care of the confetti by recycling and drying floral petals from Dorothy’s wedding. The souvenirs, which were a home grown variety of cacti in glass pots, were also prepared by her mum, while her dad designed a timber structure for their display. “The church was decorated with a variety of elegant floral arrangements by Floral Art. But, apart from all the decorations, the most heart-warming feeling was seeing the great number of guests who made time to attend the ceremony, which meant the world to us”, the couple recalled. »

» The venue with its natural rustic charm was enhanced with fairy lights and fjakkoli, including a Bedouin setting with sofas and sheers on the terrace to add to the chill atmosphere by Tunin Entertainment. Samaria walked down the aisle wearing the most gorgeous dress, labelled Victoria, which had a vintage-inspired look, by Canadian designer Calla Blanche from Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive. Alan wore a classic suit with a burgundy dinner jacket from The Groom Collection. Music was another big focal point for Samaria and Alan. “For the first dance we opted for a Maltese song by Mike Spiteri, Fejn Tħobb il-Qalb, which was wonderfully interpreted by the band The Tailors and my brother, Gianluca, on vocals”, Samaria explained. They had a great time dancing the night away together with their family and friends to the most popular classic and recent tunes. For the late hours, after cutting the lovely cake from Busy Bee, they hired Deejay Kugene from Sound Salon. »
Samaria’s father also surprised them with a delightful song he wrote, to the tune of Marina, by Rocco Granata. Filled with humour, the song meticulously narrated the journey of their relationship, from the first time Alan was introduced to the family, to the many other memorable and funny moments they shared since then. It was undoubtedly the climax of the night. It was surely a memorable day for Samaria and Alan. Both were very happy that they could share such a special day with family and friends so close to their hearts. After their amazing wedding day, they went to the peaceful island of Bali, Indonesia for their honeymoon.

Angele & Casper 3 June 2017 Angele Muscat, 29, Tax Director at TAXEA Limited, and Casper de Leuw, 35, Managing Director in an ICT company, got married at the Mġarr Parish Church, and a reception followed at Castello Zamittello, Mġarr.
A
ngele was studying at Leiden University, in the Netherlands, and started working part-time at the same university. She met Casper when he used to go to the university to do some work. “This meant that we both joined in on the so-called ‘drinks nights’ and, well, one thing led to another and we started dating”, Casper explained. Originally Angele planned to stay in The Netherlands for only a year. A year turned into 18 months, 18 months turned into moving in with Casper. A few years and many trips around the world later brought Casper to popping the big question, while they were on a holiday in Cuba. There was no ring, no fireworks, no surprise visits from family members and no camera crew. »
» Casper told us that this was what Angele had been hinting and hoping for, but he did the exact opposite. Lucky for him she still said yes! They got married on June 3rd, in 2017, but they had also celebrated a civil wedding in The Netherlands, on February 14. It was a small intimate wedding with a few close family members and friends. In Malta, they got married in Mġarr Parish Church where they had a Nuptial Mass, followed by a celebratory drink and appetizers on the Mġarr Square, to allow their guests to enjoy the surrounding views, before heading to Castello Zamittello for the reception. They opted for a sit-down meal by the exclusive caterer, Corinthia Caterers, followed by an after party. The wedding, with just over 200 guests, was relatively small by Maltese standards however quite big for a Dutch wedding. More than half of the guests were foreign with people coming from Peru, Canada, China, Japan, India, Iceland, Australia, Taiwan, Russia and 18 other European Countries. The theme for their wedding was a combination of traditions from their travels focusing mainly on The Netherlands and Malta. They had quite a few out of the ordinary things at their wedding; starting from the save-the-date cards that were in the form of a postcard and the invitations that they personally designed as a wedding passport. They had a wedding website so guests could RSVP and choose from the menu options and specify any dietary requirements. Angele amazed the guests with a surprise dance with her father, choreographed by Sarah from Plethora. No one knew about it so they used to wake up at 6am to practise the choreography. A vintage bus was hired to transport guests to and from the church and reception venue. Special arrangements were agreed with eCABS to provide transport for guests to discourage drink driving, which included reduced evening rates. The couple had about five speeches, some of which were highly emotional and funny and they also had a kids’ corner, including their own entertainment and sleeping quarters. »

» The day of their wedding was coincidentally also the suddenly announced 2017 general election. Considering that the bride had to start getting ready before the polling stations opened, Angele decided to go and vote in her wedding dress. “The church and the reception venue were decorated with plenty of fairy lights, by Transient Limited and flowers by Sarah Barbara, as we wanted to create a fairytale ambience”, the couple explained. Angele wore a beautiful ivory ball gown with a glittery skirt and very low back from Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive. She tried some 20 dresses before finding the one dress that she fell in love with. Casper wore a classic suit from Bortex. For Angele and Casper, their wedding day was one of their most memorable days. They had everything they wished for and were very happy with the result. Clayton Zahra was their wedding organiser. After such a wonderful day they went on a very well deserved honeymoon, organised by a Dutch tour company, through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. “Unusual places true, but we both love adventure and nature so this was perfect for us”, the couple concluded.

Loredana & Anthony 19 August 2017 Loredana Grech, 24, Bank Associate and Anthony Farrugia, 29, Mechanic. Mass was held at Our Lady of Loreto Parish Church, Gћajnsielem followed by a wedding reception at Ta’ Frenċ.
oredana and Anthony’s love story started after a humble ‘hi’ and a handshake. Even though they both lived in the same village, they did not know one another before they were introduced one Saturday evening by Loredana’s best friend. After that evening, one thing led to another and they didn’t look back. However, they spent most of the first five years of their relationship apart, since Loredana was studying at the University of Malta and Anthony had to work at their family business, which is based in Gozo. After a couple of years together, they decided that they would get married as soon as Loredana finished her studies and that is what happened. However, Anthony still managed to surprise her with the most romantic proposal while on a holiday in Venice. “He proposed while on a gondola with the most beautiful solitaire diamond ring”, Loredana, recalled. They got married on August 19 in 2017. It is a very special date for them both since it is the eve of their village week in Gћajnsielem. »
L
» They both enjoy celebrating the village feast and the church was decorated for the occasion so it was a bonus for them. A reception followed at the popular venue Ta’ Frenċ; they wanted an outdoor venue so Ta Frenċ was naturally the best choice for the couple. The theme for the wedding day was a warm, white wedding. Loredana always dreamt of having a special touch to the wedding day and thought that having lots of warm lighting and lots of white would create that magical atmosphere and that is exactly what happened. They decorated the church with lots of white candles and white flowers, by Jason Curmi, and hung various white lanterns all over the open ceiling of the reception venue. This created a mesmerising warm feeling. A great atmosphere was also created through the lovely music they had
throughout the day, music is a passion for Loredana and she wanted to have the best on their wedding day, so they chose Ludwig Galea for the ceremony, by Tunin Entertainment, I Love RUG for their wedding reception (This was Loredana’s dream and her father’s. He used to tell her that if she ever gets married, he would get Gianni’s band for her wedding, and he kept his promise.) And for the after party they had DJ Gordon. They opened the dance floor with their first dance to the song by Eric Clapton, Wonderful Tonight. For this special day, Loredana had the most romantic princess style dress, which she fell in love with from the very first time she laid eyes on it at Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive. While Anthony chose a plain navy blue suit with a black satin collar and bow tie from Cefai Formal Wear. »

For them the wedding day meant “the first day of the rest of our lives together as a family”, the couple explained. After such a memorable day they continued celebrating their love for one another on a month’s honeymoon in Asia. They spent the first 11 nights roaming the beautiful cities of Malaysia, four nights in Singapore, six nights in the Maldives, and finally four nights in Dubai with a day-trip to Abu Dhabi. “It was the best mixture of adventure, relaxation and shopping all in one trip”, the couple concluded.

Samantha & Godfrey
I’LL GIVE MY ALL TO YOU
8 July 2017 Samantha Zammit, 30, Teacher, and Godfrey Giordmaina, 30, Technician, held their wedding ceremony at St Paul’s Parish Church, Rabat followed by a reception at Castello Dei Baroni, Wardija.
S
amantha and Godfrey met by chance at a nightclub one December night in 2009, but liked each other immediately. They decided to meet again the following day and started to get to know each other. After a couple of dates, they both knew that they were meant for each other. Six years later they bought their house and two years after that got married. Their wedding day was July 8, 2017 and they got married in one of their favourite churches in Malta, St Paul’s Parish Church, Rabat. “We chose that church because it is incredibly beautiful and it was always our wish to get married there. We got married exactly a week after the Rabat village feast, so the church was all nicely decorated”, Samantha recalled. After the ceremony a reception was held at Castello Dei Baroni, the most beautiful castle at the top of Wardija hill. “The venue is surrounded by unobstructed views of the countryside and has a pool garden all-round the castle. As soon as we set foot in it we immediately fell in love with the place because it is very classy and elegant, so it was an obvious choice for us”, the couple explained. »

» Both the church and the reception venue were meticulously decorated with abundant fresh flowers by the talented team at Carabott Florists. All guests were stunned by the lovely floating hearts which were the highlight of the decorations accompanied by other lovely decorations from Commander Jay Events & Entertainment. The music was another highlight at Samantha and Godfrey’s wedding. At the ceremony they had Ludwig Galea during Mass and Luca Xuereb Band at the reception, both artists from Tunin Entertainment with the latter being one of their exclusive bands. The band created a lovely atmosphere for the
guests and the couple to enjoy the night. The couple wanted to create a simple yet delicate atmosphere; they are not into very complicated things. And they managed to do so perfectly with the right ambience, great scrumptious food throughout the reception by Busy Bee, wonderful cocktails by Damian’s Cocktails, delicate decorations and stunning flowers. The invitations were designed and printed by Foilplus. They had swirls in pearl foil pressed and enhanced with coloured crystal. Foilplus provided an excellent service with a final product to the couple’s complete satisfaction. »
» The souvenirs, by Kudos, were elegant white rose candles to match the whole look for their wedding. It was a dream come true for the couple, everything went according to plan. For Samantha, walking down the aisle to Godfrey in a very sophisticated mermaid, dress by Rosa Clara from Ivory & Co, was the most emotional moment; but seeing Godfrey in a really stunning suit, from Cefai Formal Wear, waiting for her was very reassuring, Samantha explained. Looking back, the couple agreed that the most nerve-wracking moment was their first dance, where they danced to the romantic song, All of Me, by John Legend, “In fact, we mixed up a couple of steps but we’re still happy with how it turned out”, Samantha, remembered. After such an incredible wedding, the couple went on a memorable 14-day cruise, organised by SMS Mondial on the Magical Norwegian Jade. They left from Germany and visited Norway, Iceland, Great Britain, and Scotland. “It was a holiday of a lifetime”, they recalled.

It is the perfect mix of romance, memory-making and opportunities to relax and de-stress. A few tips to follow when booking your cruise honeymoon: • As it’s your honeymoon, you should have a few treats. So it is a must to book a romance package. This will most likely offer truffles and chocolates, a bottle of champagne and a bed of roses, depending on what the cruise company includes in this package. • Book a very exclusive suite with the balcony, so you will wake up to the most gorgeous unobstructed ocean views. You can take your morning coffee while enjoying the breath-taking views, and some suites also offer a private whirlpool tub on the balcony. • Go somewhere exotic and check off a bucket-list destination. Somewhere like the Fjords, it’s a magical place where you can explore the Norwegian wonders. Or the Alaskan cruise, where you will experience wildlife, mountains and glaciers. It would definitely be a holiday of a lifetime. • A Japanese cruise would also make an exciting experience. The benefit of a cruise is that you can visit various parts of the country. If America was always one of your dream holiday destinations, your honeymoon is the best excuse to make your dream come true, and a cruise would make it even more desirable. You would be able to visit various parts of America and Canada. • While on the cruise you can indulge in a romantic meal and share dinner in a cosy corner of an onboard restaurant with your new husband or wife. Every day you can try all the ship’s different restaurants. • It’s your honeymoon so you deserve some pampering. Most cruise ships have their own spas where they offer various treatments like facials, massages and other spa facilities. You can even book a couples’ massage to reconnect while you relax. • You could also decide to combine your cruise with a dream destination on shore. For instance, if you go on an American tour you can first visit somewhere like New York, and then set off on your dream honeymoon cruise after you have spent a couple of days roaming around the city enjoying a stress-free holiday.
