MOOD BOARD t this time of year as summer slowly comes to an end. Mornings dawn and evenings appear through floating romantic mists. It is slightly cooler and a golden glow bathes the countryside and our lovely stone buildings.
Our bridal fashion shoot takes place well ahead of printing, so the sun was beating down on this month’s beautiful bride and her two sweet little bridesmaids. And yet, for several hours, everyone kept perfectly cool, between the magnificent pillars of Villa Bighi, or shaded by the pines and palms on its sweeping terraces, overlooking the Grand Harbour. There can hardly be a more romantic setting for a wedding reception.
THE GENTLE ROMANCE OF AUTUMN Summer ends in the hint of autumn shades. The mornings are hazy, evenings are golden, romances bloom and love is all around.
Talking of receptions, the venue you decide on for your ceremony and/or reception is so important that we are giving it extra coverage in this month’s issue. We have some inspirations for choosing your perfect location, and you’ll also find info on some top wedding venues, to make it easier. Choosing a wedding ring is never as easy as you think, especially as traditional precious metal bands are now giving way to jewelled designs. Our rings with a difference piece will give you some new ideas. Another choice brides have to make is who will be their bridesmaids, so we’re giving you some things to consider when choosing your bridesmaids, and a few ways to keep them happy as they carry out their significant role. Our regular cocktail feature is associated with a prewedding event that just wouldn’t be the same without a cherry and a swivel stick – the hen party. Join the happy hens for some hints on how to make it amazing. And, just in case the pressure and excitement of all the planning for your big day is giving you a serious case of wedding nerves, we have some ways of banishing them on our advice page.
“To find someone who will love you for no reason and to shower that person with reasons, that is the ultimate happiness.” - Robert Breault, opera singer
Finally, our fashion pages feature some gorgeous gowns with stunning veils, capes and sleeves to suit the fact that it starts getting cooler this month. We also have enchanting dresses and accessories for younger bridesmaids, which go from princess sparkle to pretty and simple. We are also starting a new feature, Meet Our Model, to introduce our stunning September bride, Stephanie. So here is our September magazine to steer you through all the plans you will be making before you say I DO; we hope it helps! See you in November.

HINTS & HELP
WEDDING JITTERS
YOU’VE BEEN LONGING FOR THE DAY YOU MARRY THE ONE YOU LOVE; THEN SUDDENLY YOU WONDER IF YOU'RE DOING THE RIGHT THING
W
edding nerves can be anything from worrying over certain imagined mishaps to being convinced you're making the biggest mistake of your life; and on all levels they are very real and not unusual. For Maltese couples there are pre-wedding preparation classes to attend it they want a church wedding and a number of relationship issue are covered during the weeks it is held. However, creeping fears and doubts have a way of infringing on the most rational and calm people when something as important and life-changing as marriage is involved. The difference between cold feet and serious doubts can be quite confusing, especially in this day and age when most couples have had plenty of time and ways to get to know each other, and their roles within the marriage may well have been discussed and agreed long before they make their vows. But for someone who has them, they are distressing and scary. The first thing is to decide if you are worried about the wedding itself, or actually being married. If your feelings are more about something going wrong on the day, a catering crisis, dress dilemma, family flare-up, remember that these can all be dealt with by having a backup team of professionals and best mates to keep things running smoothly. No wedding needs to be cancelled because the rings have been lost, and everyone around you is in your corner and wishing you well, no matter what. If your fears feel more like stage fright then they are most likely just that, plus a sense of excitement that you hardly recognise because it is so intense. Help prevent sudden flashes of 'what ifs?' by knowing that you have thought of everything during the planning stage and you could not have done more. But if you are having feelings of dread rather than happiness as the wedding gets closer, take some time to think about why. Does it all seem too much? Are people trying to take over so you feel out of control? Is your partner becoming over involved or not taking much interest at all? Are there issues in your relationship that still worry you? Write down your concerns, and possible solutions to each one. Talk them over with someone, preferably your partner of course and make time to listen, and support each other. However long you have been together, however well you know each other, talking at this stage is good practice for your future together and will help you both understand how sharing each other's concerns and supporting each other, plays a big part in a successful marriage. If one of a couple is having serious fears and doubts the other will probably be shattered and shocked. Talking will help, either singly or together. Choose a long-time successfully married couple you know, a trusted friend, family member or a couples therapist. Couples are marrying older, on average, than they did 20 or 30 years ago, and have had more time to mature. Brides often have their own jobs, both have a far wider view of life than their parents and grandparents will have had before getting married. In many ways this is a good thing. But human nature and relationships are what they are. Newly-wed couples today face their own set of challenges, big and small. The trick is to face them together, with respect, and in the joint knowledge that as a happily married couple you can always warm each other's cold feet.
6 I DO
Calming ways to combat wedding day nerves THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING ◊ Have your family and girlfriends around you to help you keep calm. ◊ Butterflies in your stomach are caused by adrenalin, the hormone that helps us achieve and survive things we find difficult. You can control adrenaline by consciously relaxing your muscles, breathing deeply and visualizing yourself somewhere calm and happy. That will trickle the adrenalin from your system and you will feel fine. ◊ Sleeping is probably the last thing you want to do, but it’s essential to help your body cope with stress. Have a warm bath, read a book, listen to music and relax. Do not wire yourself up on social media. Your blood pressure will lower enough to for you to get to sleep. ◊ Take some gentle exercise, yoga, walking the dog, running or swimming, till you feel tied enough to go home and sleep. ON YOUR WEDDING DAY ◊ Trust your family and attendants, don’t be afraid to delegate. Your stress levels will be noticeably lower. ◊ Use your favourite calming or rescue remedy. Don’t get hungry even you don’t feel like eating. Your body needs fuel to get you through all the excitements of a long day. Stay hydrated, but don’t consider alcohol except as a lastminute nerve-blocker; you don’t want to be hunting for a mint just as you are leaving for the ceremony. ◊ If hours of giggling together with others might wind you up too much, go for a walk, have a massage or a familiar beauty treatment or watch a film, to distract you until your final preparations begin. ◊ Now and again take a few minutes to yourself to take your mind off things calm down and relax. Soon you will look back on the day with nothing but happy memories because that was the day you married the one you love.
COCKTAILS
HAPPY HENS
Shots are so last wedding; the serious hen events now need cocktails and here are some ways to enjoy them
H
alf the fun of hen parties is escaping as a carefree group to do something wild and witty that, everyone will like, to bond as the bride’s klikka before knuckling down to the serious business of the lifechanging event that she is about to enjoy. For now, let’s forget the overseas tours and extravagant away weekends at hundreds of euros a head. In these eco/economy days crunching the credit card and getting into debt is not a happy way to celebrate anything. Blow-up ‘props’, glittery L-plate accessories and dancing gentlemen who are prepared to expose themselves to a lot of squawking hens, in exchange for … well, what? Not just the cash surely, are a bit naff too. Instead let’s think style, sophistication, originality and practicality. Plan a hen party that combines food, drink and entertainment in an environment that is easy to reach, and has no added extras and parking problems. In fact, hiring transport is a good idea, so no one has to be the designated driver. For a chief bridesmaid with excellent organisational skills all this will be a piece of cake. But surely it should not all fall on one person.
A good idea is to research local hen party organising companies, find one that works for what you all want and take it from there. For groups who want to make all their own arrangements here are some ideas. Depending on the time of year, whether you prefer to be inside or out, and the time frame – day night or longer. Hire a boat. Several kinds are available: sail boats for those with Caribbean pirates on their minds, and romantic evening cruises on sleek motor yachts for those with stars in their eyes. Hardworking hens will love some spoiling so take over a salon or spa for some lavish pampering, and emerge glowing and glamourous. Go eco-friendly and have an agri-day on a farm. Interact with the animals, pick fruit and learn about traditional food-making processes. Then there’s wine tasting, horse riding, along our sea shores or through the country; pottery cafes, where you can all make your own, unique wedding souvenir, and visits to chocolate factories, or hands-on cookery courses, in charming old farmhouses; if you feel the celebration needs some depth. Book a room anywhere from rustic to regal and have a private party. Include lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. Then you could hire a beautician, hairstylist, or nail bar; or organise a vintage fashion show, including jewellery and accessories, or watch a copy of the classic movie Bridesmaids –full of Dos and Don’ts for those in that role. None of these ideas are meant to topple the traditional, stunts, forfeits, pranks and insta-moments that are obligatory at all hen happenings. They are just ways to give the whole day, or night, or weekend an edge. And since, naturally, drinks will also come into play here are this issue’s cocktails for the whole brood of you.

“Always the bridesmaid never IS A SAYING THAT USED TO the bride” REFER TO SOMEONE WHOSE ONLY HOPE OF EVER WALKING UP AN AISLE WAS FOLLOWING THE ACTUAL BRIDE.
N
ot so today; lots of women choose to stay single, and there is hardly a greater BFF bonding gesture than being someone’s bridesmaid. But choosing bridesmaids is not easy, and keeping them all happy takes tact and skill.
WHO WILL Y OU PICK? Feelings can be hurt and loyalties tested to the limit over the number you choose, whether it’s family members, friends, siblings, godchildren, step-children or any combination of the above. Base your decision, and ultimately it must be your decision, on the following points like ◊ The size of your wedding ◊ How closely you are linked, familywise or emotionally to the girls you want to choose. ◊ Whether they are seriously reliable enough to fulfill the tasks that go with the role ◊ Whether they will get along with each other and the rest of the guests ◊ Do they share your sentiments and ideas of an ideal wedding? ◊ If you find yourself unable to ask everyone you want to ask, go for fewer bridesmaids so other friends or family members will not feel left out. WILL THEY ALL SAY ‘Y ES‘ TO THE DRESS? Once upon a time, a bride chose exactly what her attendants would wear. Everyone wore the same colour, fabric, and style, whether they were the same height, width or colouring. Generations of wedding photos are proof that this policy often led to disaster. But the bride, or more likely her father, was paying, it was her wedding and she was going to have what she wanted, tears and sulks or not. Now, the bridesmaids pay for their dress, shoes and accessories, although the bride may cover some of the details. Styles and colour schemes are discussed fully, and instead of hating every embarrassing minute they spend in a dress they cannot wait to fling off, bridesmaids can enjoy dressing up together in something they love, and will want to wear again. And, as soon as you ask someone to be your bridesmaid sit down and discuss what her costs may be. Be upfront and honest and don’t let your friendship be thrown by whatever is decided. It is easy to allow for themes, seasons, traditions and current fashion trends when a bride and her bridesmaids all agree.
YOUR BRIDESMAIDS WILL LOVE YOU, IF YOU… ◊ Consider their individual colouring and skin tone. ◊ Choose a comfortable fabric and classic style, with room for personalised details and accessories.
◊ Think shoes and day-long comfort are compulsory ◊ Do not insist on a hair and makeup look that is totally outside their comfort zone.
◊ Make sure the dresses will be comfortable and suitable for the church and all the venues.
◊ Remember, being a bridesmaid can be expensive. In addition to the dress there are shoes, accessories, hair and makeup, a bridal shower and/or hen night to consider.

THE ‘BRIDES’ FOR OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO, SO WE THOUGHT IT WAS TIME THEY SHARED SOME THOUGHTS AND FEELING ABOUT THIS AND THAT.
S
tephanie Peel, September’s lovely bride, is Maltese and currently living in Australia. We were delighted when she agreed to spend an afternoon of her recent visit to Malta modelling some of the stunning dresses and accessories we have chosen for this issue. As you will see in her answers to our questions, her lifestyle and interests give her a happy, relaxed and balanced view of life. Where do you live? I currently live in Sydney Australia, and have been there for the past four years. Where would you like to live? I would love to live in Switzerland for a while to learn the language (my mother is Swiss), and eventually move back to Malta and settle here. There is no place like home :) What is the happiest job or career you could have? A food critic ha ha. How do you like to relax? Anywhere quiet with a good book! Who are the people who make you happiest, for whatever reasons? My parents who give me great advice, my brother who I have long conversations with, and my group of friends who I have been friends with for over 10 years; we support each other and just like to laugh a lot! What could the world do without and what does it need more of? Less hate and competition, more love and acceptance. How do you feel about social media and what do you mostly use it for? I have mixed feelings about social media. It’s great to keep in touch with people and see what friends and family are up to. But I feel like life is meant to be lived through our eyes and not our phone cameras. I use it mostly to keep in touch with my family and friends while I am living overseas. I DO 21

JEWELLERY
With these rings There are definite signs that 21st century wedding rings are becoming more elaborate.
W
edding rings are no longer just simple bands of precious metal. In fact, there is what appears to be a rush towards new designs which look rather more like engagement rings, as brides choose to include stones, and less traditional shapes for their wedding rings. Highly decorated wedding rings are not really a new trend at all, more a revival of a style that goes back over 6,000 years, to Ancient Egypt. There, wedding bands signifying love and commitment and, with no defined beginning or end eternity, were made from iron or gold and heavily carved or inscribed with various symbols. During the medieval period, the 5th to the 15th century, wedding rings could be very elaborate, being mostly made of gold with engraving, molding and precious gemstones. Buying a wedding ring is never easy. You may visit your favourite jeweller determined that they will have the ring you have always dreamed of. And so they will; but you will see lots of others too, just as beautiful, that you may not have imagined. And then how easy will your choice be? Before you set off for your ring, here are some ways make it easier to pick the perfect ring. Define your choices by considering a few
points and sticking to them, no matter what. If necessary, show them to your jeweller so he respects your wishes and doesn’t try to tempt you into buying something you are not 100% happy with, or that is way over budget. Set a budget. Yes this is to be a wonderfully symbolic sign that you have met and married the love of your life, but you must have a realistic price to stick to, if only to avoid that niggling feeling of guilt that goes with extravagance. Start your search early, especially if you want something very specific or unusual. Think about your lifestyle. A wedding ring is traditionally worn 24/7, whatever you’re doing, wherever you are, so it needs to be pretty tough. Think about the type of jewellery you like to wear and the clothes you wear it with to give you an idea of what to look for. Either narrow down your preferred metal,
stones, engraving etc and go just for something on those lines, or set off with a completely open mind; you may surprise yourself with something totally original and different from your usual style. Think into the future, you want a ring that will always please you; one that you can wear with other rings, maybe an eternity ring. Allow plenty of time for any alterations, engravings or embellishments. This work is skilled and intricate and cannot be hurried. You probably don’t need to worry about outgrowing your wedding ring, but do take your measurement carefully and avoid by anything too tight. If it is a little loose you could always use a keeper, because it’s more than likely that within a year or two it will fit better. But if it is a bit tight to begin with you could have problems. When you have made your choice, make sure you have all the paperwork; certification for the metal carats and weight, and the gemstones, guarantees, if relevant, and full receipts. These are your proof of ownership and will be useful when you need to have your jewellery valued for insurance purposes. And remember, whatever influences and decides your choice of ring it will always be one of the most precious pieces of jewellery you will ever wear.

Sharona & Josef 6 October 2018 Sharona Refalo, 34, an English Teacher, and Josef Hili, 29, a Police Constable, were married in Ghajnsielem Parish Church.

S
FIRST STEPS TO A PROPOSAL harona and Josef had always known each other from afar. Josef would be at Hondoq bay with his dog Joyce and sometimes Sharona would stop and offer her some ice-cream, which she always gobbled up without hesitation! “But, one fateful Carnival night, in Nadur, things went a step further, our paths crossed and entwined big time…. And we never looked back!“ said Sharona. People around them kept passing comments or making suggestions and the couple didn’t take much notice. But, “Once we moved in together and saw how comfortable we were with each other, the idea of marriage felt like the next natural step to take“, she continued. After a really nice dinner just before Christmas, they were meant to meet up with some friends for drinks. But Josef lured Sharona back home to find the whole apartment decked with fairy lights, a bottle of champagne, a table full of poinsettias and a ring! “My dog Dexter was sporting a shirt which said: ‘Say Yes Mummy’, so I definitely could not refuse the offer!” she confirmed. »

The couple sent out invitations to match their wedding theme – classic vintage, with a touch of contemporary. They were by Exclusive Creations, in a delicate ivory hue decorated with pearl embellishments. Guests were impressed by their resemblance to a pretty clutch bag. A MAGICAL CEREMONY The couple chose Ghajnsielem Church, for their wedding because it was in the village where Sharona grew up. Florist George Sacco Xerri decorated the church beautifully in Miss Piggy, Scottish Blue Thistle, pink roses and hydrangeas, a beautiful combination of colours which truly stood out. Sharona’s bouquet also had dark pink Veronica, baby pink Austin roses and silver Brunia berries. Music in the church came from VociAngeliche – Orchestra led by Ivan Attard. Sharona wore a beautiful long-sleeved floral patterned gown, from Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive, designed by Martina Liana, with a V-neckline as the focal point, accented by off-theshoulder sleeves. The Rococo-inspired lace extended the length of the sleeves and finished at the wrists with fabric-covered buttons. The same lace pattern as the sleeves covered the bodice and extended the length of the dress to a bold lace hem. A V-back, with floating, scalloped straps highlighted the back of the gown, balanced by a luxe, lace train. “James, from Eva Mariee just looked at me and told me… ‘I think I have what you need’. He brought out about five dresses and when I put this one on, we immediately realised it was the one”, Sharona explained. Josef chose a very dashing patterned dark navy suit with Chinese collar, from Cefai Formal Wear. The couple exchanged rings, by Tresor D’Or. They were simple gold bands; for Sharona to complement her coloured engagement ring, and for Josef who looked for comfort because he and jewellery don’t really go well together! “The most magical moment must have been when we locked eyes for the first time at church“, the couple remembered. »
I DO 31
Also contributing to Sharona & Josef’s special day was American Wedding Cars.
A GRAND RECEPTION This was held in the couple’s second home – the Grand Hotel, Gozo, which belongs to Sharona’s uncle. “Not only is it like a second home for us, but the food and service there are impeccable and we had the possibility of holding a cocktail hour with finger food and antipasto on the terrace, overlooking the breath-taking Mgarr harbour, followed by a banquet in the Grand Ballroom” they explained. For their first dance, given their musical tastes, the couple couldn’t dance to anything but their special song by Ozzy Osbourne, I Just Want You. Music on the terrace consisted of a saxophone/piano duo, while in the ballroom, The Busker played along to some signature tunes, followed by DJ Marcool’Uomo who led everyone into to an after-party they won’t forget. HAPPILY EVER AFTER Sharona and Josef say the best advice they received while planning their wedding was: Just do your best and if something goes wrong on the day, just smile wave and move on! And their day was made by the warmth of their guests, the professional team who stood behind them, including Carmelino Refalo, wedding organiser, and the fact that they are not just lovers, but best friends. “We could feel this warmth and genuine joy throughout the wedding, and it truly made our day unforgettable”, they said. After the cutting of the cake with all their dear families and friends cheering them on, giving their guests delightful gold or silver souvenir candles, scented with vanilla, by Exclusive Creations, and an afterparty where everyone went crazy and ended up dancing on tabletops and getting entangled in the fairy lights, the couple were ready for their honeymoon. As island people who equally love the island life, they chose the beautiful tropical Mauritius for their honeymoon. And they made all arrangements themselves.

THE COUPLE
Melania & Yasmeen 5 July 2019 Melania Bajada, 30, a sports coach, and Yasmeen Vella, 28, a primary teacher were married at Dwejra.
A TIME AND PLACE They had been settled and happy together for two and a half years, and were going for a vacation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Melania was thinking, where on Earth is there a more beautiful place than the Maldives to propose. “I booked a romantic candle-light dinner near the sea. And after our nice dinner together I proposed. It was a beautiful moment and from that night we started to plan our wedding“, Melania remembered. THE PERFECT SETTING Melania and Yasmeen’s theme was to keep everything simple and natural. And as they also like simple, natural areas, they chose Dwejra as the location for their ceremony, because it is one of the beautiful places on the Maltese Islands, although it’s a pity that the Azure window has collapsed. “All we needed was the surroundings and Jacob Portelli and his harp, its wonderful music made the area an even more harmonic place“, they said. But they also added some individual decorations and a backdrop and some signs, for guests, all made from pallets. Here a big thank you goes to Antonella, for her help in the last days, especially on the back drop. For their sweet and simple ceremony Melania wore a dress from WeddingBells. “I was really happy with the dress it was simple and stunning. I just wore a pair of pearls in my ears and some small fresh roses in my hair. The shoes were just comfortable, the way I wanted them, from BVR”, she said. »
I DO 35
Yasmeen’s dress was made by the talented Vicky Xuereb. Yasmeen took photos of two dresses she liked and she made a dress based on them both. Yasmeen was really satisfied with the results. “I also wore a pair of pearls, and I made myself a bracelet with a string of roses I bought. In my hair I wore a simple hair band from Claire’s Accessories”, she added. Sara Schembri and Josianne from Maria’s Hair Salon both did a wonderful job as make up artist and hairdresser respectively. Jason Curmi made them each bouquets using light pink roses, to match the bridesmaids’ dresses, and a lot of greens and fennel from Ta’ Cenc. And when they came to exchange rings – Melania’s wedding ring was a ring from grandma Maria and Yasmeen used her mum’s ring. THE BEAUTIFUL RECEPTION Melania and Yasmeen decided on Villa Fiorita for their reception because of its beautiful but natural surroundings and the view of is-Salvatur. Decorations were by Marlina’s Décor. The couple were really satisfied and happy with their catering, by Bartolo, the owners of Villa Fiorita. They had a sweet table, made by their family, who have a small confectionery, and Melania made their wedding cake herself, and described it as: “Just simple with some gold touches and a frill on the lower layer; set on a beautiful stand and table also decorated by Marlina.” »

For their first dance they chose Beautiful in White. We were both in white dresses and the lyrics were ours exactly. We had the first dance together and it was really nice, with fireworks and sparklers, they remembered. This was a wedding fully shared by family and friends who are close to the couple, and helpfully coordinated by wedding planner Brian Sultana. There were two flower girls, three bridesmaids, enchantingly dressed by Monsoon, three ushers, two best men and a ring bearer. Besides all the ways their family, guests and suppliers went out of their way to make the day extra wonderful, what will Melania and Yasmeen remember most about their wedding day? “I think the highlight was the ceremony at Dwejra, somehow it was so emotional and everyone cried. Also I have to mention the diversity in our bridal team! We love everyone the same“, said Melania, on behalf of them both.
Also contributing to Melania & Yasmeen’s special day was Cefai Formal Wear.

THE COUPLE
Dinah & Justin 28 April 2019 Dinah Brincat, 26, an engineer, and Justin Catania, 29, an engineer, were married in St Paul Cathedral, Mdina.
D
inah and Justin met in the first year of their engineering course at university and immediately became close. They knew they loved each other and always talked about getting married and building a family. They wanted to continue their journey together through the Holy Sacrament. PROPOSALS AND PLANNING “Justin officially proposed to me in front of our family and friends on my 24th birthday. I never expected that this surprise birthday party would end with Justin on one knee and a ring on my finger, especially since we agreed that we should save our money. Regardless of this, I was over the moon at how much Justin always
does to put a smile on my face and to capture such beautiful memories together“, said Dinah. The wedding invitations matched a theme, inspired by the fairytales and royal weddings Dinah grew up watching, while wishing she would be lucky enough to have something similar. They were designed by Dinah’s brother Clive, in a simple embossed design printed with a touch of rose gold and a wax seal, by Polidano Press. The couple chose St Paul Cathedral, Mdina, for their wedding because it holds great memories of their early dating days. “The cathedral is just breathtaking and so, it was an honour to be married there. Our foreign guests were impressed at what a beautiful wedding ceremony we had“, Dinah remembered. »
I DO 41
It was emotional driving through the Mdina gates towards the cathedral, in the same Austin Princess, from John’s Garage, as her parents because she had dreamt since childhood of having a wedding and successful marriage like theirs, hearing the wedding bells, by John Abela & Sons. And all the tourists clapping and congratulating her was unexpected and brought her so much happiness. Dinah had always wanted a princess dress with a lot of beading and details, and her mother, who had been a wedding dress maker and designer, was so excited to design and sew it for her. It was made of satin with thousands of crystals, beads and a lot of cutwork to create the perfect original design. Dinah wanted the train of the dress to be as long as possible and to have similar features to her mother’s wedding dress and the 80s Princess Diana’s dream wedding, but without the puffy sleeves. The veil was plain tulle to avoid a contrast between the detailed dress and the veil itself. The length was equivalent to the dress train, with a little detail on the edge to complement the wedding dress perfectly. To match the style of the dress, Dinah chose a crown-like tiara to complete the look. Her parents gave her a gift of earrings, from Tesor Jewellery, which she will be able to pass on to a future generation, making them very precious to her. And the groom? “I had no say in the matter, ha ha. It was my mother-in-law who decided the type of outfit I should wear according to the dress code etiquette. However, I was comfortable with wearing a traditional morning tails suit to make my now wife’s dream wedding come true. We hired the suits from Aristocrats”, Justin admitted. Dinah wanted white flowers with a touch of yellow (the bridesmaid dresses colour). Her bouquet was a mix of flowers such as roses and arum lilies. The flowers were by Charmaine from Flower Design Siggiewi. The couple exchanged simple, traditional gold bands, also by Tesor Jewellery, engraved with their names and the date of their wedding. They arrived on a cushion with their names on it and a beautiful detailed design made from pieces of Dinah’s mother’s wedding dress. »
I DO 43
A SETTING WITH A VIEW When it came to the reception Dinah and Justin chose Olive Gardens, in Mdina, because they love the views of Mdina, especially on the sunny Sunday they were so lucky to have, and because they had always been satisfied with the quality of Camilleri’s catering and decorations. Over 30 years ago they were the caterers for Dinah’s parents’ wedding. They also wanted a venue close to the church to encourage people to attend the wedding Mass. The cathedral was filled with family, friends and co-workers so they provided a shuttle service, from Dalton’s Garage, between the church and the venue.
Dinah’s mother decorated the venue, throughout with flowers and personalised details. “Kyle Beeston, from Beeston Wedding Organisers, helped us to set up. We had a lot of detail in our wedding that was linked to our parents, family and past experiences. My personal favourite decoration which turned out exactly like I wanted was the wedding cake. It had three layers, with three different flavours, the traditional almond cake, Baci cake for the chocolate lovers and carrot cake for the less traditional guests, and they loved the idea of the cake being offered in small cake boxes for them to take home”, Dinah explained.
Justin’s work commitments had kept them apart for seven months, making coordinating everything difficult. So, they chose I don’t Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith for their first dance. The Residents, one of the exclusive bands of Tunin Entertainment, did an excellent job at performing the song, and although the couple had no time to practice, some people actually thought they had taken lessons. “Credit should go to my husband who took the lead, who did not step on my dress and who was able to lift me up without falling. So, for us the first dance was very special because, we just danced, enjoyed it with no pressure of thinking about the next move, and just sang along”, said Dinah. »
HAPPY MEMORIES Dinah has many people to thank; hairdresser Doreen Flask who worked Saturday to Sunday for the whole wedding party; Chris Attard for a natural, beautiful, look and Shanice Busutill from Get Polished Nails for a simple French manicure. Her talented, creative and passionate mum, Rita, who planned everything to the least detail, and also designed and made the bridesmaid dresses, and the groom’s mother’s dress. Her father, for lending her his vintage car Alfa Romeo Veloce, that no one is allowed near. “It was special to me since I drove my husband home rather than the other way around“, she said. Justin, of course, for carefully and precisely creating and making the scented candles in cute jars. They made personalised souvenirs that truly represented the wedding shades and the couple themselves. And all their guests making their day so special and particularly for respecting their wishes and wearing hats and fascinators linked to their royal theme and adding a lot of beautiful colour to the day and photos. “It is difficult to find the best moment of the wedding day because, we enjoyed every minute“, the couple remembered.
Also contributing to Dinah and Justin’s special day was Golden Edge Event Services.

THE COUPLE
Angie Marie & Kenneth 23 June 2018 Angie Marie Portelli, 24, a tutor, and Kenneth Portelli, 27, an enforcement officer, were married in the Basilica of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Nadur.
A
ngie and Kenneth met when they were very young, 12 and 15. Angie attended choir practice, during the Christmas period at the boys’ MUSEUM, and Kenneth gave a helping hand with decorations at the same place. When Angie finally caught Kenneth’s eye and he asked her out, she refused. But after a few weeks, she decided to check whether he was still interested or not... in fact he still was. “Then, it was the rest of our lives”, she said. A SURPRISE PROPOSAL The day after one of their friends got married Kenneth suggested a date in 2018. Angie accepted. As it was four years ahead, they kept it to themselves. But after a few weeks they told their families; and slowly began to make plans. There was no proposal, but Kenneth thought of a truly unexpected surprise. He was changing his job and his colleagues decided to have dinner, including spouses and fiancées. As Kenneth was about to give a thank you speech, Angie wondered why he looked very nervous. Then, after saying his ‘thank yous‘, Kenneth told his now ex colleagues, they were all celebrating something that would continue in the very near future. A proposal cake arrived right in front of a surprised Angie, and Kenneth took out an engagement ring. They chose the theme Simple but Elegant and began by sending out invitations, which were initially designed by Kenneth himself. “We wanted our own monogram and after a number of trials with the printing company, JDP Digital Printing, we had the final product; a three-fold golden shimmery paper, with navy blue font, an A&K monogram in front, finished with an embossed rope at the base”, the couple explained.
30 I DO
A REAL WEDDING FEAST Angie and Kenneth chose the Basilica of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Nadur, because they are both from the village and it is close to their hearts. “The date was specifically chosen during the feast period, when the church would be decorated and the statues of the patrons would be out of the niche“, they added. Music in the Church was by Ludwig Galea and Rachel Lowell. Angie carried a magnificent bouquet of sweet avalanche roses, mint, white peonies, white, astilbe and white, pink and dark pink lisianthus, from Flowers by George; and wore a beautiful dress designed and made by her sister Joanne Xuereb. It was timeless ballgown silhouette in using ivory Mikado, blush soft tulle, pure silk organza and bead embroidery lace, which was all cut out work and hand-sewn onto the gown. The beading was glass beads and pearls. Angie also hand-sewn iridescent Swarovski beads to the gown to give it a more lustrous finish, and added a fingertip length veil and a double cap cathedral length train which made the gown regal. Angie and Joanne discussed the design a lot before it was completed, and bought the fabric from Gaudi by JB Stores eight months before the final design was created. “The design was left to be completed by my sister and I loved it!“, Angie exclaimed. Kenneth wore a suit from Cefai Formal Wear, Gozo. The couple sealed their vows with rings from Stephen Vassallo Jewellers. Angie’s in 18ct white gold with diamonds, and Kenneth’s 18ct white gold with a matte finish. The Ivory Suite made a perfect choice for the couple’s reception as it offered inside and outside spaces, to allow for changes in the weather, and it has a lovely atmosphere. As they had a seated dinner, they were very careful about the lighting and took professional suggestions and assistance from a friend. All the tables were bathed in a warm white light. »
Also contributing to Angie Marie & Kenneth’s special day was Corinthia Caterers.
“Kenneth and I made six, large wreaths of dried grape vines, and added white and blush tulle, finished with flowers, crystal garlands, and small hanging vases around them. Some tables had lanterns with flowers and fairy lights in them, others different styled vases of flowers. “We also made the backdrop for the photobooth. The top part was done by using more dried grape vines, in front of a white sheer, with crystal garlands hanging from the vines. The sofa we used was completely refurbished.
Kenneth took it to pieces and together we built it from scratch“, added Angie. Westlife’s Beautiful in White was the couple’s choice for their first dance, then Xemx, when their parents joined them for a slow dance. Semi-synchronized fireworks to the songs Grande Amore – Il Volo and We Found Love – Rihanna followed. It was an amazing show and this was something that we both were looking forward to. Angie and Kenneth’s wedding organiser was Carmelino Refalo. And the best advice they
received was: To keep everything simple and to stick to a budget. And generously, instead of souvenirs they gave donation to Inspire Foundation, where Angie works; although guests also received bottles of wine, with a personalised label As the wedding cake was cut, the party started, complete with a special moment for all Nadurin – festa songs were played and the guests waved yellow and red flags, which was; a surprise for Angie and definitely enjoyable for everyone.

Your ideal wedding venue One of the most important decisions you will make about your wedding is where will you hold your ceremony and reception?

VENUES IN MALTA (Continues on pages 61 and 62)

ou’ve been imagining this day for so long; you’ve been dreaming of a magical theme and all you need is a venue. We are very lucky on our islands, to have such a great variety of locations and buildings, all within comparatively easy reach of each other. Our beautiful baroque churches, with their atmosphere of tradition and reverence are perfect for the solemnity of the wedding Mass. So too are the many pretty chapels, which provide an aura of charm and simplicity for those who choose them. If you’re looking for a venue where you can hold both the wedding ceremony and your reception you will also find plenty to choose from. All you need do is decide on your date, budget, guest numbers, catering requirements, locality, theme etc. and then look for a somewhere that fulfills your wish list. The possibilities are almost endless. Now that it is no longer necessary for one of a couple to marry in their parish church, there is a wealth of churches and chapels to suit all wedding styles and sentiments. The same applies to the reception venue. Go for spectacular and you need a setting with a sense of history and drama; the Grand Harbour area with its incredible views, or an atmospheric palace. Think of the terraces with sunset views and the sea or fortress walls for a background. For a wedding at a cooler time of year, when interiors are important, the lavish architectural features and gorgeously grand rooms of several of our historic buildings would make a striking setting. You may have a theme that requires a ceremony somewhere atmospheric like, the Tarxien Temples, or the unique prehistoric Ġgantija Temples, in Gozo. Such ancient settings will certainly add something very special to the occasion. Some of the gardens outside Valletta and Floriana make charming and tranquil spots to hold a ceremony. And, still out of doors, there are so many places that are perfect for a beach wedding. Imagine the turquoise sea, golden sand or apricot rocks, of a romantic bay or a magnificent cliff top. Many of these locations leave you free to decorate the surroundings, within certain, natural limits, so your celebrations can be as creative and original as you could wish. For a smaller wedding, why not have a romantic voyage on a schooner or sleek motor yacht to celebrate your wedding? Small receptions can be delightfully personal and intimate, and still give you all the splendor and luxury your day deserves, in one of the dozens of quaint and quirky boutique hotels popping up on Malta and Gozo or, more traditionally, a historic house or palazzo. And while making your choice, remember two of the most important considerations, apart from the actual location and style of venue, are accessibility and comfort. Your guests and service providers need to be able to come and go easily and enjoy the surroundings you have chosen for your dream wedding. There should be comfortable rooms or a suite for the bridal party to change or rest if necessary. The owners or management of a venue should be ready and willing to answer all your questions, show you over the premises, make it clear if there are any conditions regarding entertainment, lighting, decorations and catering. You will also find it helpful if they are able to respect your budget and give you a comprehensive quote, including everything you ask for, to avoid the shock of last minute expenses. It may seem like huge task, but the perfect place for your wedding is certainly out there and, as long as you keep it as realistic as you can you will find it!
