Turin, Italy

PIEDMONT IS IN ITALY'S NORTHWEST AND BORDERS SWITZERLAND AND FRANCE. TRUE TO THE MEANING OF ITS NAME – FOOT OF THE MOUNTAIN – PIEDMONT IS A LAND OF MOUNTAINS AND ROLLING HILLS. THE REGION’S PROVINCES INCLUDE TURIN, THE REGIONAL CAPITAL, ALESSANDRIA, ASTI, BIELLA, CUNEO, NOVARA, VERBANO CUSIO OSSOLA AND VERCELLI. A WEEKEND DRIVING THROUGH ITS FOODIE TOWNS AND VINE-CLAD HILLS INVITES YOU TO FRIENDLY FAMILY-RUN HOTELS AND RUSTIC TRATTORIAS, EXPANSES OF WATER AND RICE PADDIES, LONG ROWS OF POPLARS AND OLD FARMHOUSES, ANCIENT VILLAS SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL GARDENS AND MEDIEVAL CASTLES. nce the seat of the Savoy empire, Piedmont is known for its Barolo and Barbaresco, wines made from the Nebbiolo grape that are amongst some of the most coveted wines in the world. The menu in Piedmont differs from that of the rest of Italy - here truffles reign supreme. Local cooking relies on butter and lard, which give a silky texture and hearty aroma. Gamey local meats and root vegetables are slow-cooked allowing flavours to develop slowly giving a rich tasty character to Piedmontese dishes.Think risotto, polenta and cheese fondue. A driving trip in this region is really the best way to enjoy and appreciate all it has to offer, driving from town to town, enjoying the magnificent scenery along the way of sloping vineyards, eating delicious meals, and simply going at your own pace.

O

abound, such as the Renaissance Duomo, dating back to the Renaissance; and the Sindone Chapel (Shroud of Turin). Magnificent public buildings include Palazzo Carignano, Palazzo Madama and Palazzo Reale, as well as the prestigious Savoy residences. The hills to the south of Turin are perfect driving, offering enchanting views and expanses of vineyards and countryside.

ASTI, CUNEO AND ALESSANDRIA

(cheese fondue with polenta and truffles) and Piedmont-style boiled meats. The region has rich limestone and sandstone deposits laid down by the retreating Adriatic some 5 million years ago and is home to some of Italy's finest red wines and some famous whites. The town of Asti is at the centre of this area and is the major city of this notable wine district. The wine most famously associated with Asti worldwide is the sparkling Asti (DOCG) made solely from the moscato bianco grape.Vineyard upon vineyard litter the terrain around Asti and Alessandria producing some of the most famous wines including Barbera d’Asti, Barbera del Monferrato, Dolcetto, Cortese di Gavi, Brachetto, and Grignolino. One of the most famous events held in Asti is the Palio di Asti, in which all the old town "Rioni" and "Borghi" compete in a bare-back horse race. Originating from a victory in battle against Alba in the Middle Ages, Asti's Palio is the oldest recorded in Italy, and is held in the triangular Piazza Alfieri on the 3rd Sunday of September.

The three neighbouring Provinces of Asti, Cuneo, and Alessandria incorporate the Langhe and Monferrato hill region in the centre of Piedmont. The area around Asti is renowned for its cheeses, such as robiola of Roccaverano and robiola di Cocconato. Typical dishes include agnolotti, Monferratostyle potato gnocchi, ciotola di trifulau

countryside is varied from the summits of the Alpine to the gentle slopes of the Gattinara Gattinara Hills, covered by vines, woods and rivers and the vast plains.

VERBANO CUSIO OSSOLA Lying on the borders of Switzerland and Lombardy this is a region of unspoiled nature with an extensive network of valleys. For example, the Val’Ossola is carved by the Toce River overlooking a plunge of 413 metres, which gives way to the most powerful waterfall in the Alps. Being the most Northern province of Piedmont hearty local foods are based on traditional products, such as black rye bread baked in a wood ovens, and gnocchi all’ossolana made with chestnut flour, potatoes and yellow pumpkin. The entire valley is renowned for its cheeses, mushrooms and polenta in the mountains and lake fish by the lakes.

TURIN The Province of Turin lies on the border with France and Val d'Aosta. The area is characterized by its varied landscapes: magnificent alpine resorts, vast pasturelands, woods and large stretches of vineyards. The Chiarlo family owns 148 acres and oversees the viticulture of another 50 in the three classic growing areas of Piedmont: Langhe, Monferrato and Gavi. Michele Chiarlo’s extensive vineyards stretch over more than 272 acres of Piedmont, including the hills surrounding Canelli, which offer an ideal microclimate for growing Moscato. Grapes are hand harvested from select

vineyards, followed by a slow fermentation using. Unfermented Moscato grape must is then added to fine tune the sugar levels. Finally, the wine is immediately bottled in order to preserve the characteristically aromatic, sweet fruit fragrance of the Moscato Bianco grape. The result is a wine with such a delicate finesse that Chiarlo named it Nivole after the Piedmontese word for clouds. This sweet, fragrant, lightly sparkling wine has vivid aromas and flavors of peach and apricot on a light body with a delicate finish typical of Moscato d’Asti.

he Dacia Logan MCV has scooped the Gold award in the fiercely competitive Family Car category in the Auto Express Driver Power 2016 Awards. It is the first category win for Dacia in the awards and the UK’s most affordable estate car took the prized number one spot after owners praised it in their responses to the leading automotive customer satisfaction study. Complementing the success of the Logan MCV in the ownership survey, the Dacia Sandero – the UK’s most affordable car – finished a strong seventh in the equally hard fought Supermini category. PLANNING A ROAD TRIP ABROAD? HERE ARE SOME GENERAL TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN PLANNING YOUR NEXT MOTORING TRIP. RMF TECHNICAL DIRECTOR PAUL VELLA WRITES.

W

DOCUMENTS

hen driving abroad you may be asked to produce your documents at any time. Make sure that they are in order and readily available to avoid the risk of a police fine or even having your car taken away. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have all documentation needed to comply with the requirements of immigration, customs, health and other relevant regulations. If you are travelling in a vehicle other than a car or motorcycle, or you are taking a boat, you may need additional documents. Documents to take include a valid full (not provisional) driving licence, an international driving permit (if host country demands one), vehicle registration document (log book), motor insurance certificate, passport(s) and your travel insurance documents. Certain countries may also require a visa. If you are taking a vehicle

abroad that is company owned, hired or borrowed you will need a letter of authorisation from the registered owner. In addition you will still need to have the original vehicle registration document (log book) or a car hire contract. It’s always a good idea to take out travel insurance for your trip abroad to ensure that you’re covered for accidents and emergencies.

MEDICAL TREATMENT If you’re going to a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland, make sure you’ve got a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC card entitles you to reduced-cost, sometimes free, medical treatment in most European countries but the cover provided under the respective national schemes is not always comprehensive – and the cost of bringing a person back home in the event of illness or death is never covered so you should make sure you have adequate travel insurance as well.

TYRES

Check all tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth before you go. Most countries have the same requirement as in Malta, a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm over the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference. Tyres wear out quickly after they get down to 3mm so if they are this worn think about getting them replaced before you go. Some require winter tyres at certain times of the year in which case a minimum tread depth of 3mm is generally required (the Czech Republic now requires 4mm). Snow chains are important for any winter motoring and compulsory in some countries even when using winter tyres.

QUICK DO’S AND DON’TS • Emergency In an emergency 112 is the European emergency call number you can dial anywhere in the European Union in case of accident, assault or in any other distress situation. • Drinking and driving With regards to drinking and driving there is only one safe rule – if you drink, don’t drive. Laws are strict and the

IF YOU ARE TAKING A VEHICLE ABROAD THAT IS COMPANY OWNED, HIRED OR BORROWED YOU WILL NEED A LETTER OF AUTHORISATION FROM THE REGISTERED OWNER. IN ADDITION YOU WILL STILL NEED TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL VEHICLE REGISTRATION DOCUMENT (LOG BOOK) OR A CAR HIRE CONTRACT penalties severe. • Mobile Phones Use of a hand-held mobile phone while driving is prohibited in many countries

• Spectacles Take a spare pair of spectacles if you wear them especially if you are the sole driver. • Think right It’s easy to forget to drive on the left, particularly after doing something familiar, such as leaving a petrol station or car park. • Reflective jackets Many countries require all drivers including visitors to carry reflective jackets. Warning triangle - many countries require visiting motorists to carry a warning triangle, so it is better to have one in your car. Speed-trap detection devices The use or possession of devices to detect police radar is illegal in most European countries. Penalties can include fines, driving ban, and even imprisonment. Some countries now also prohibit the use of GPS based navigation systems which have maps indicating the location of fixed speed cameras meaning that you must deactivate the ‘fixed speed camera’ PoI (Point of Interest) function. • Show your card. The RMF membership card includes the ‘show your card’ symbol on the reverse which gives access to hundreds of discounts in Europe and the USA. April 2016 | motoring 07

NEW PEUGEOT I-COCKPIT

®

NEW PEUGEOT I-COCKPIT®: THE INFORMED SENSATIONS AMPLIFIER PEUGEOT REVEALS ITS VISION OF TOMORROW'S DRIVING ENVIRONMENT AS IT INTRODUCES THE LATEST PEUGEOT I-COCKPIT®. DESIGNED FOR AN INSTINCTIVE, SAFER AND NATURAL DRIVING EXPERIENCE, THIS OPERATIONAL DEMONSTRATOR IS A PREVIEW OF THE BRAND'S PASSENGER CABIN SPACE ON FUTURE MODELS.

W

ith advanced ergonomics, head-up digital instrument display panel, interactive touchscreen, technology has never been so perfectly showcased. The study conducted by the Brand reviewed the experience of 2.2 million users of the current generation of the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit®, fitted on PEUGEOT 208, 2008 and 308 vehicles. The new PEUGEOT iCockpit® intensifies the driver’s sensations and enables both driver and passengers to step into a new exciting and stimulating driving dimension, for a journey in which nearly all the senses are engaged, simultaneously.

PEUGEOT I-COCKPIT : AN INNOVATIVE CABIN DRIVING CONCEPT ®

Driving a PEUGEOT has always been an engaging experience. In terms of chassis and road holding, the Brand’s expertise is now irrefutable. The driving dynamic sensations at the steering wheel make for a happy driver. In order to go even further in the essential

search for driving pleasure, for several years now PEUGEOT has been profoundly rethinking the driving cabin environment in order to offer a superior automotive experience. This research has led to an innovative interior layout, known as the PEUGEOT iCockpit®. It includes the following essential elements: • A compact steering wheel that offers more agile manoeuvrability and improved driving sensation, turning the act of driving into an intuitive pleasure. With arms no longer needing to be so open and wide to grasp the steering wheel, the breadth of movement during manoeuvres is reduced, thus making the driver more responsive and agile, in a more relaxed driving position. • A head-up instrument panel that displays all relevant information in front of the driver. The driver does not need to look away from the road and can fully concentrated on driving. This ergonomic position, made possible due to the compact proportions of the steering wheel, increasing driver co mfort by reducing tiredness. • A large touchscreen that intuitively

displays all comfort controls (radio, air conditioning etc.) and offers natural control of all the vehicle’s information and equipment. The result is an incredibly streamlined, modern and technologically informing instrument panel. The near-lack of buttons, along with the choice of high-grade materials and high manufacturing quality, enhances the specificity of the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® and increases driving pleasure, agility and driver concentration. A PEUGEOT’s interior is now immediately recognisable, and amplifies desirablity to the Brand.

AN UNQUESTIONABLE COMMERCIAL SUCCESS In the past four years, this solid identifying signature has been rolled out on the Brand’s three bestselling models, which this year all feature in the European top three of their respective segments: • The 208, renewed and re-energised last year; • The 2008, whose new version has just been revealed at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show; • The 308, the Brand’s overall best-seller.

issan’s electric vehicle (EV) offering remains the popular choice for fleet operators across Europe, with sales of the Nissan LEAF and e-NV200 in the fleet market climbing for a fourth consecutive year in fiscal year 2015. Up 45 percent on the previous fiscal year, Nissan sold more than 7,500 LEAFs and e-NV200s to fleet operators and municipalities in Europe, commanding a 28 percent share of the pure electric fleet market. With over 20,000 Nissan EVs sold to fleet customers across Europe since launch, it’s clear that business owners are switching on to the benefits of zero emission mobility. Offering optimum practicality and driving comfort combined with low running costs, the Nissan LEAF and e-NV200 are truly viable options for fleet operators across the region.

N

Since 2012, over 2.2 million customers have enjoyed the characteristic PEUGEOT i-Cockpit®. All client surveys conducted in Europe and China agree: driving in a PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® vehicle is a rewarding and stimulating experience. The concept is now becoming known as the major distinctive feature of Peugeot’s recent creations. Yet the Brand wants to go further still and explore new sensory concepts, so that driving a PEUGEOT really does become a unique, unforgettable, compelling and addictive experience. Two atmospheres are offered as standard to the occupants: “Boost”, for dynamic driving, and “Relax”, for a calmer driving experience. Both atmospheres are entirely customisable, making it possible to go beyond the driver’s and passengers’ pleasure and make their onboard experience unique, engaging and unforgettable. The new PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® goes further in all fields. More quality in its presentation, more technology in its design, better connected, more intuitive, and taking excitement and personalisation even further: it is the embodiment of what future driving cabins will be, and the materialisation of tomorrows’ PEUGEOT interior.

Costing approximately €0.03 per kilometre to run, owners also benefit from low maintenance costs that make for unrivalled total cost of ownership. With fewer moving parts, Nissan EVs provide estimated maintenance costs up to 40 percent lower than petrol or diesel alternatives. Furthermore, many European fleet owners can also benefit from varied incentives offered by governments across the continent, all whilst saving on energy consumption; providing a costeffective, simple solution to reduce their carbon footprint. Karl Anders, National EV Manager at Nissan Motor (GB), said: “More and more local authorities and public sector organisations across the UK are turning to Nissan’s marketleading electric vehicles to meet their fleet needs. “Both the LEAF and e-NV200 can

have a significant impact on reducing running and whole-life costs as well as well as helping organisations significantly cut their carbon emissions.” Nissan celebrates this all-important milestone some five years after the launch of the Nissan LEAF, the world's first mass-market, zero emission vehicle and just one year since the launch of its 100 percent electric e-NV200 light commercial vehicle. The Nissan LEAF remains the best-selling electric vehicle of all time, with almost 220,000 units sold worldwide. In FY15, 16,916 Nissan LEAFs were sold in Europe, securing a new annual record. developing 500 HP and 460 Nm of torque, combined with a specially developed 7-speed PDK transmission. The engine has the largest displacement and most power of any naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection in the 911 family, accelerating the highperformance sports car from zero to 100 Km per hour in 3.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 330 Km/hr. Two fine examples of this classic automobile were unveiled to the press and distinguished guests by Continental Cars at a reception in the Porsche showroom adorned with a collection of photographic images called ‘Harvesting Light’ by photographer Keith Ellul.

HARVESTING LIGHT EXHIBITION NOW ON AT PORSCHE SHOWROOM. THIS EXHIBITION IS NOT ONLY A COLLECTION OF BEAUTIFUL AND EVOCATIVE IMAGES OF MALTA’S PICTURESQUE COASTAL AREAS, BUT ALSO A COMPREHENSIVE EXPLORATION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S INNER SELF.

Kevin Casha, the exhibition curator had this to say: “This exhibition is not only a collection of beautiful and evocative images of Malta’s picturesque coastal areas, but also a comprehensive exploration of the photographer’s inner self. The capturing of these photographs provides clear evidence that, each and every time, Keith Ellul is actually embarking on a spiritual, meditative process that magically transports him to the primordial time when man stood gazing in awe at the power of nature. The short space of time that the camera’s shutter travels during an exposure is sufficient to immortalize each unique moment. It allows one to

realize how insignificant man is next nature and creation and also perhaps a reminder that the movement of the sun is a strong influence not only on our ambience but also on each individual being. This project is a fine example of valid employer and employee relations. The management of Continental Cars has been exemplary in giving Keith, one of their valued employees, all the cooperation and encouragement possible in order to make his exhibition a success. This is a perfect way of establishing admirable relations through mutual cooperation. More companies should follow suit and recognize and develop the sometimes hidden talent of their employees.”

TROPHÉE BAILLI DE SUFFREN 2016

T

Saturday 25 June to Wednesday 6 July 2016

he Mediterranean’s most beautiful yacht race is also its longest race for classic yachts. Now in its 15th edition, the Trophée Bailli du Suffren is run over three legs with approximately 680 nautical miles with two ports of call: Leg 1: From Saint-Tropez to Porto Rotondo, Sardinia (193 nm) – competing for La Coppa dei Quattro Mori. Leg 2: From Porto Rotondo to Palermo, Sicily (252 nm) – competing for La Coppa dei Ghepardi. Leg 3: From Palermo to Grand Harbour, Malta (233 nm) – competing for The Corsairs’ Cup. To enable as many boats as possible to compete in each leg, and subject to weather conditions, the course may be shortened and compulsory ‘gates’ may be implemented. These will be decided at the respective briefing before each leg start. The event takes its name as well as its start and finish locations from the 18th century French admiral, Pierre André de Suffren de Saint-Tropez, who spent his early career in Malta where he received the title of "Bailli de Suffren" from the Knights of St John. Known among his sailors and his enemies (most notably the British) as "Admiral Satan", this formidable seafarer enjoys a reputation in his native France that is comparable to Horatio Nelson's in Britain. His statue stands on the quay in Saint-Tropez, and yachts compete for the overall prize – the Sword of Honour of Admiral Satan.

IN 2001 THREE FRIENDS HENRICHRISTIAN SCHROEDER, CHRISTIAN BENOIT AND PIERRE HUGO CONCEIVED A GRAND 21ST CENTURY SAILING TRADITION FOR CLASSIC YACHTS - A RALLY OF SPECIAL FRIENDS, OLD AND NEW. COVERING 630 MILES FROM SAINT-TROPEZ TO GRAND HARBOUR MARINA IN MALTA, AND VISITING FOUR OF THE MOST EXOTIC PORTS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, THAT EVENT IS THE TROPHÉE BAILLI DU SUFFREN.

The Bailli de Suffren is a gentlemanly race. Competition should remain friendly between these beautiful and unique boats. While winning is of course a pleasure, the emphasis is on the delight of sailing together, of visiting and socialising at some of the Mediterranean’s most special places, while respecting the Corinthian spirit of fair play, preserving the environment, adhering to the requirements for safety, and following the best traditions of seamanship. The dress code for the receptions ashore is: boat uniform, blazer with club tie, or smart casual. IDEAS

10 STUNNING SAILING DESTINATIONS IN EUROPE THE MEDITERRANEAN IS THE FIRST CHOICE FOR MANY FOR SAILING AND YACHTING IN EUROPE. STUNNING BLUE WATERS, VARIED COASTLINES AND TINY FISHING VILLAGES WITH WONDERFUL FOOD MAKE FOR A PERFECT SAILING HOLIDAY. FOR A DIFFERENT BREAK WITH RUGGED SCENERY NORTHERN DESTINATIONS LIKE THE BALTIC ISLANDS, DORSET AND THE FJORDS OFFER A TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE SAILING EXPERIENCE. HERE ARE 10 BEAUTIFUL SAILING DESTINATIONS SCATTERED AROUND EUROPE.

AZORES, PORTUGAL The Azores, officially the Autonomous Region of the Azores is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal, composed of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean about 1,360 km west of continental Portugal, about 880 km northwest of Madeira. There are nine major Azorean islands and an islet cluster, in three main groups which extend for more than 600 km and lie in a northwest-southeast direction. The climate of the Azores is very mild for such a northerly location, being influenced by its distance to continents and the passing Gulf Stream. The islands are known for their lush green vegetation and dramatic lunar-like landscapes and are perfect for exploring by boat watching out for dolphins and whales as you go. The waters here literally team with life, while ashore there are extinct volcano cones and hot springs to bathe in.

BAY OF NAPLES, CAPRI AND THE AMALFI COAST, ITALY For uniquely beautiful coastline in Europe, set sail from Naples and head down the coast towards Amalfi and the exclusive island of Capri. Blue skies, abundant food and wine, romantic villages and gorgeous isles form this inspirational section of coastline.

BALEARIC ISLANDS, SPAIN The Balearic Islands are an archipelago of Spain in the western Mediterranean Sea. The four largest islands are Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera. This is a much more touristy option but the Balearics still make a beautiful European sailing destination. Come for the peaceful, natural beaches or the lively seaside resorts.

BALTIC ISLANDS, GERMANY AND SCANDINAVIA Although most of us would not think of going islandhopping in Germany, it offers 16 motoring | April 2016

some really unique locations. Wellness enthusiasts and lovers of relaxation will be spoilt for choice on the Baltic Sea islands. There are literally thousands of lovely segments of land in the Baltic Sea, many with sandy beaches, picturesque fishing villages, nature reserves and unspoilt stretches of forest. There are ruined castles on some, lighthouses and windmills on others. The Baltic Sea is ecologically unique, with some 200 large rivers draining into it, this is the world's largest area of brackish water.

COTE D’AZUR, THE FRENCH RIVIERA The Côte d'Azur or the French Riviera, is the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France, also including the sovereign state of Monaco. Extending from the Italian border (Italian Riviera) in the east to SaintTropez, Hyères, Toulon, or Cassis in the west. This coastline was one of the first modern resort areas. It began as a winter health resort for the British upper class at the end of the 18th century. With the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, it became the playground and vacation spot of British, Russian, and other aristocrats, such as Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, when he was Prince of Wales. The Côte d'Azur is still one of the most beautiful sailing destinations in Europe.

DALMATIAN COAST, CROATIA The 3107 mile Adriatic coastline has clear seas, a gentle summer climate, quaint villages and historic towns, making it a magnificent cruising area. There are no fewer than 1185 islands and one of the best ways to explore them is by boat. Expect traditional fishing villages, beautiful sunsoaked beaches and a plethora of attractive hidden coves.

DORSET AND DEVON, ENGLAND Explore Agatha Christie’s homeland along the coast of

southern England. Sailing is the perfect way to appreciate the quaint coastal towns steeped in Elizabethan history. Over 150km of uniquely formed ancient coastline stretch all the way from East Devon to Dorset along England’s first natural World Heritage Site. Otherwise known as the Jurassic Coast, the cliff exposures along the Dorset and East Devon coast provide an almost continuous sequence of rock formations spanning the Mesozoic Era, or some 185 million years of the earth's history.

FJORDS, NORWAY A sailing trip here will offer you some of the most breathtaking scenery in Europe. The World Heritage listed fjords were created by a succession of ice ages and hasn’t changed much since. Today they are a dramatic sight where tranquil blue waters gently lap at lush green shores which rise to majestic granite peaks. Travel from the small villages and towns in the inner areas of the fjords, to the extreme western coast and its many islands with old settlements and fishermen’s cabins.

PORTUGAL GERMANY

IONIAN ISLANDS, GREECE Scattered along the western coastline of Central Greece, the Ionian Islands are an island cluster comprising twelve small and large islands. The best way to visit these islands and their remote beaches is by boat. The temperate climate; the deep and cool sea waters; the mountains; the lush vegetation; the cultural heritage; and the cheerfulness of the inhabitants, make the Ionian Islands the ideal place for a sailing holiday as well as rest and relaxation.

TURKEY This is a must-do for any sailing in the Mediterranean. This part of Europe is known for its ancient amphitheatres, rocky coastline and sunken villages. The rocky coastline itself offers countless bays and protected harbors and places to snorkel and swim.

INTERVIEW

THE SEA IS MY MUSE LILY AGIUS INTERVIEWS CAROLINE NAVARRO

4.Grand Harbour in Winter 100x40

How did you get into sailing? I really got to enjoy sailing when I moved out to Australia 18 years ago. Working at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (home of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race) I followed a competent crew sailing course at the club which allowed me to join members and friends sailing when asked to join them as part of their crew on the twilight regattas held on Sydney Harbour Wednesday evenings. This fuelled my interest to work in the yachting industry.

Where have you travelled to by yacht? I began my yacht travels while in Australia, when I formed part of a delivery crew on a yacht travelling from Sydney up the east coast of Australia to the Whitsunday Islands in Far North Queensland. There I joined a Sydney friend’s yacht to take part in the Hayman and Hamilton Island Regatta and later also joined the same yacht, BZW Challenge, in Thailand for the King’s Cup in Phuket while I was travelling South East Asia. Returning to Europe I was still so keen to see more of this part of the world but this time from the sea. Yacht-cheffing was the best option at the time as it allowed me to see most of the Mediterranean and Adriatic while at the same time getting paid for it. The next few years my yacht travels consisted of summers on the coasts of Croatia, Montenegro, the Cote d’Azur, the Spanish Balearic Islands, the Aeolian Islands and the south coast of England particularly Falmouth Harbour in Cornwall. Then for a couple of winters I based myself in the warmer parts of the world like the

Relief sails RMSR on the Marsamxett Harbour 90x60cm

Caribbean as I could easily find yacht work out of destinations like St Maartens, Antigua and the British Virgin Islands.

How would you describe life on the water? Life on the water ticks at a completely different pace to life on land, a lot slower. On the water one is not concerned with getting from place to place in the shortest time possible but with the pleasures the voyage can give you. Out at sea nature is more vivid and constantly changing; colours, sounds, movement and time of day make all the difference and effect one’s mood. Being prepared for all eventualities while at the same time remaining calm and cool, keeping

one’s pulse in sync with the momentum of the sea. At sea each moment can be savoured in equal amounts and the simple things in life like the wind, the sunset, a good meal and glass of wine taste much better!

Are you inspired by the sea when you paint?

20 motoring | April 2016

Where are you off to next? I will be in Palma de Mallorca for the Superyacht Boat Show starting 27th April. On Friday 29th I will be hosting a crew party at the ACrew Stand in the boat show close to the superyachts.

What are you working on now?

The 3 cities 80x50cm

capture the energy from the colour and light. Mixing up the varying nuances of blues in contrast with the warm yellows expelled from the stone are an essential part of my palette and give great joy especially as the colours vibrate on the canvas to convey expression and movement. As an artist it is inevitable that my life at sea should affect my art.

The sea is my muse. In my most recent work there is not one painting that doesn’t include the sea. I try to capture the power of sailing through the movement and intensity of the brushstrokes. The colours of the Mediterranean Sea are my biggest source of inspiration and that’s why I like to begin my paintings au plein air in order to

Soon after finishing my studies in Feb 2013, I started working as sales & marketing manager for Grand Harbour Marina in Vittoriosa, part of the Camper & Nicholson Marinas International network worldwide. The marina sponsors the classic offshore 600 nautical mile regatta the “Trophee Bailli de Suffren” which leaves the Port of St.Tropez late June, for Sardegna,Trapani and ending in Malta 10 days later. Last June I was invited to participate in an exhibition of my latest nautical seascapes at the Galerie de Lices, Place de Lices in St.Tropez. The opening was in time for the start of the regatta. On returning to Malta, Sandro Azzopardi Gioielleria offered to hang this work in his new jewelry boutique in Ta’ Xbiex, just opposite the marina. Right now I am working on a commission of 3 large canvases for a private home here in Malta. The foreign owner, a keen collector of art and a yachtie alike requested similar style nautical paintings of harbours and yachts sailing to add life to his Malta residence. Once this commission is completed I will be working towards an exhibition in central London at St. Katherine’s Dock, located by the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Camper & Nicholsons Marinas was recently appointed to take over the management and operation of this site, known as central London’s finest marina. Exhibition date to be confirmed.
