DISCOVER VENETO’S LANDSCAPE AND SPECTACULAR TOWNS

STRETCHING FROM THE ROCKY FOOTHILLS OF THE DOLOMITES TO THE FERTILE PO RIVER VALLEY AND LAGOONS OF VENICE, THE VENETO REGION HAS A DIVERSE GEOGRAPHY THAT MAKES IT A FASCINATING AREA TO DISCOVER. HERE YOU'LL FIND MEDIEVAL CASTLES AND MODERN SKIING RESORTS, FOOTHILLS DOTTED WITH CHARMING TOWNS AND LINED WITH PICTURESQUE WORLD-CLASS VINEYARDS. THE WHOLE AREA OF THE RIVER PO DELTA IS A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT OF EXCEPTIONAL NATURAL BEAUTY AND PERFECT FOR A DRIVING TRIP. eneto is bordered to the south east by the Adriatic, with its beaches, ports Venice and Padova, which contrast with the rolling countryside and vast stretch of Lago di Garda on the west, flanked by lemon and olive groves, and resorts and medieval towns. The cookbook of Veneto cuisine dates back to medieval noble families who created world-class cuisine, made up of tasty and simple ingredients. The region’s cuisine offers unique flavours which vary according to the geographical area. The area of the Euganean Hills offers two seasons par excellence: spring and autumn the best times of the year to enjoy dishes made with wild herbs, vegetables and mushrooms. The dishes in the lower area of the Veneto are based on fresh products such as rice, truffles, wild game, and pork. The Eastern area reflects the influence of the nearby Riviera del Brenta and Venice. Here dishes are based on fish from the lagoon, sea and river. A local speciality is horse meat. Polenta reigns on the tables in the upper area of the region, often side by side with dishes based on wild game and fowl, salted cod and radicchio. With a long and noble history, the local wines are also major players on tabletops. The region is protected from the harsh northern European climate by the Alps, the foothills of which form the Veneto's northern extremes. These cooler climes are well-suited to white varieties like Garganega (the main grape for Soave wines), while the warmer Adriatic coastal plains, river valleys, and Garda Lake zone are the places where the renowned Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino DOC reds are produced.

Venice

Verona

VENICE

VERONA

Celebrated the world over for its splendid and varied architecture, home of elegant shops and cafes, Venice is comprised of a group of 117 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Driving into Venice you can leave your car parked at one of the car parks in Piazzale Roma and then explore the city on foot, using the water buses (vaporetti) or a private water taxi.

Verona, with its rich Roman and Etruscan past, is an aesthetically pleasing provincial city, with streets paved with marble. Verona is also well known as the setting for Shakespeare's timeless love story, Romeo and Juliet. In the center of Verona stands the 1st-century AD Arena Roman amphitheater Arena di Verona. It can hold about 30,000 spectators and is still used for opera performances between June and August. Also not to be missed is Piazza Erbe with its colorful market.

RIVIERA DEL BRENTA The Brenta is a river that runs 108 miles from Trentino to The Adriatic Sea. In the 16th Century, as grand villas were being built along the river, there was a desire to prevent silt from collecting in the Venetian lagoon, and so two canals were constructed, bypassing the lagoon. The aristocracy that owned the villas on the Brenta would travel daily by boat to conduct their business along the canals.

PADOVA Treviso

TREVISO Despite comparisons with Venice, the lovely fortified city of Treviso has its own distinctive character. Treviso's balconied houses and porticoed streets are criss-crossed by picturesque canals and filled with beautiful medieval palaces.

Padova is known for the frescoes by Giotto in its Scrovegni Chapel and the vast 13th-century Basilica of St. Anthony. The basilica, with its Byzantine-style domes and notable artworks, contains the namesake saint’s tomb. Padua's old town has arcaded streets and stylish cafes and restaurants. Don't miss the big fruit and veg market in Piazza dell’Erbe with stall after stall piled high with fresh, fragrant produce, and the covered market, under the grand Palazzo della Ragione that has been selling prosciutto, wine, Italian cheeses, meats and fresh seafood and all manner of treats for over 800 years.

Vicenza

VICENZA Lying equal distant between Venice and Verona,Vicenza is set against a backdrop of mountains and is home of the great Palladio, a leading 16th-century architect, responsible for the city's great palazzi and countless villas in the countryside. Have a break at Pasticceria Soraru overlooking Piazza dei Signori for a cappucino and morning cornetto. November 2016 | motoring 03

ANTONIO CARPENE FOUNDED HIS WINERY IN THE 1860S, HAVING BEEN FASCINATED WITH CHAMPAGNE. A QUALIFIED CHEMIST, HE WAS IN CONTACT WITH PASTEUR AND KOCH AND WAS FIRMLY CONVINCED THAT A SIMILAR WINE COULD BE PRODUCED IN ITALY. HE APPLIED HIS KNOWLEDGE TO THE PROSECCO GRAPE (NOW KNOWN AS GLERA), HARVESTED FROM THE HILLS OF CONEGLIANO AND VALDOBBIADENE. stablished in 1868, Carpenè Malvolti is one of the most prestigious wineries in Veneto. Its founder, Antonio Carpene, was a forerunner in the application of biology to the art of winemaking. He published practical and theoretical essays on the subject of winemaking, which for many years were considered classical texts on the subject. In 1873, he established the first Oenology school in Italy dedicated to the study of grape growing and wine making. The estate is currently owned and operated by his great-grandson Etile Carpene Jr., who continues to produce quality wine that meets the high standards of the Carpene family. At the forefront of innovation, technique and style, Carpenè Malvolti Prosecco di Conegliano DOCG has been the standard bearer of the forward thinking wine approach so emblematic of Italy`s most modern wine producing region. The superior quality of the Prosecco grape, and that of Carpenè Malvolti Prosecco DOCG, comes from hillside vineyards of typical red flaky soil, limestone marl and grey-green chalk. Located about an

When the sparkling wine is obtained, it is centrifuged before bottling under vacuum. A very fine and fruity bouquet. This guarantees the utmost quality of the raw material. Thirteen decades of tradition, effort and commitment have guaranteed the highest level of quality. Carpenè Malvolti was the first, in Italy and in the world, to perfect and promote the production of "method charmat", or sparkling wine, in large vats. Grapes for the Prosecco di Conegliano are selected only from hillside vineyards in the DOC area. The grapes are immediately taken to the winery where they are destalked and then gently pressed. THE NEW AUDI Q2

Witness the untaggable!

T

he new Audi Q2 was launched last Friday 11 November at the Audi Showroom in Ta’ Xbiex. Chevalier Maurice Mizzi, President of Mizzi Organisation gave the following address: “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and thank you for joining us here this evening for the launch of the muchanticipated Audi Q2. Soon you will see why! Audi are promoting the latest addition to their Q family as Untaggable. I am sure you are all wondering what this untaggable tag means. The new Q2 is not just a scaled down Audi Q3. It represents a totally new segment for Audi and a completely new design direction than that of its larger brothers and of the total car market. In other words – It is unique. With its new Octagonal radiator grille, Coupe’ like roof line and distinctive concave flanks in the door area, the Audi Q2 separates itself from its larger brothers in both looks and purpose. However, this separation is only skin deep. The new Q2 retains all the virtues that have become synonymous with the Audi brand albeit in a new Stylish and Sporty package. From its state of the art Safety and Driver Assistance systems to its versatile and intuitive infotainment system, the new Q2 is a no compromise contender in this segment offering all you would expect from any Audi. Audi also offer a selection of six engines for the new Q2: Three TFSI and three TDI engines are available with

power outputs ranging from 116 hp to 190 hp. The engine program follows the principle of rightsizing. This is about striking the perfect balance between vehicle class, engine displacement, power output, torque and efficiency.

Whatever engine you may choose, rest assured that all offer superb driving dynamics and efficiency. And now, the million Dollar question! How much does this exciting new Audi cost? The new Audi Q2 can be yours for as little as €24,900 (or € 24,200

including the Government scrappage scheme) I strongly recommend that you take the opportunity to book a test drive of this great new car to experience the Untaggable first hand. You can do this here this evening.”

RENAULT ZOE CROWNED OVERALL GREEN APPLE CHAMPION 2016

• 100 PER CENT ELECTRIC RENAULT ZOE DECLARED OVERALL GREEN APPLE CHAMPION 2016 BY THE GREEN ORGANISATION • ZOE WINS GREEN APPLE’S PURE ELECTRIC AND HYBRID CARS CATEGORY • SECOND TIME ZOE HAS WON AT GREEN APPLE AWARDS • SIXTH ANNUAL AWARDS FROM NON-FOR-PROFIT ORGANISATION he Renault ZOE was crowned Overall Green Apple Champion for 2016 this morning at the Houses of Parliament after also being judged the winner in the Green Organisation’s Pure Electric and Hybrid Cars category for the second time. The ZOE was voted into first place as judges from the Midland Group of Motoring Writers praised its environmental credentials, commitment to an electric future and its affordability. Marks were awarded by the judges for the way a car drives and behaves in the real world, away from the testing laboratory. Renault estimates that the ZOE, recently unveiled with an uprated battery to provide up to 250 mile range (NEDC) – the longest of any mainstream electric car, has a real-world range of between 186 miles in temperate conditions and 124 miles in extreme cold conditions. One of the Midland Group of Motoring Writers said of the ZOE: “It is by some measure the most convincing all-electric

vehicle I've driven. So good, in fact, than it only takes a few miles to forget what's powering you along so convincingly. “The ZOE shows Renault's commitment to the future of electric power in an affordable package that looks good, drives well and does its bit to make the planet a little bit greener." Paul Flanagan, Groupe Renault

Managing Director, said: “The Renault ZOE is stylish, affordable and practical and is perfect for those who are looking to downsize their carbon footprint. We’re delighted that the Green Organisation and Midland Group of Motoring Writers have recognised the ZOE for its environmental credentials.” The Renault ZOE is a part of

Renault’s Z.E. range made up of the Twizy and Kangoo Van Z.E. The ZOE range is priced from £13,995 (after PiCG plus battery lease) in a choice of three trim levels, including a new top-of-therange Signature Nav trim and can be purchased either outright or by leasing the battery. The ZOE has been selling strongly in the UK with 1,482

examples sold in the first threequarters of 2016 – a 33 per cent increase on the same period of 2015 – continuing the trend set in Europe where Renault was the best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer in 2015. Purchases of ZOE represents one in six electric vehicles sold in the UK. The ZOE is proving popular with the British public having been voted Best Supermini in the Auto Express Driver Power Survey 2016 and coming second overall out of 183 models. The ZOE is also a three-time winner of What Car?’s ‘Best Electric Car for less than £20,000’. The Green Organisation, based in Northamptonshire, was established in 1994 as an international, independent, nonprofit, non-political, non-activist environment group, dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world and invites entries from all parts of industry for its annual Green Apple Awards.

VANQUISH S TAKES ASTON MARTIN’S ULTIMATE SUPER GT TO THE NEXT LEVEL • POWER OF NATURALLY-ASPIRATED 6.0 LITRE V12 ENGINE INCREASED TO 600PS • SUSPENSION SET-UP HONED TO DELIVER GREATER POISE AND PRECISION • EXTERIOR FEATURES NEW EXPOSED CARBON FIBRE SPLITTER AND DIFFUSER, PLUS STRIKING NEW QUAD EXHAUST OUTLETS

A

ston Martin has turned up the heat on it’s ultimate Super GT to create the new Vanquish S. Sharper styling, greater potency and increased athleticism define this latest evolution of an illustrious model line. One that originated from Aston Martin’s legendary Works in Newport Pagnell and has proudly served as standard bearer for the marque’s sporting and stylistic values since 2001. In this, the second generation Vanquish’s evolution to S specification, careful attention has been paid to the engine, chassis and aerodynamics to create a machine honed to deliver more intense thrills and even more scintillating performance.

Central to this is the naturally-aspirated 6.0 litre V12 engine, which now produces up to 600PS (up from 573PS) and enjoys sensational throttle response, thanks to a revised, freer-breathing intake system. These larger volume inlet manifolds allow a greater volume of air to flow into the engine at high revs, creating a relentless power delivery and a stronger feel all the way to the redline. Building on this increased intensity, the calibration of the 8-speed Touchtronic III transmission has been revised to deliver faster gearshifts and greater refinement at low speeds for a greater sense of precision and immediacy. Likewise, the suspension, damper internals, spring rates and anti-roll bar bushes have also been re-tuned to give the Vanquish S a keener edge in the more

sporting suspension modes, without compromising its ability to deliver supple ride quality on demand. Visually the Vanquish S can be readily distinguished by a new aerodynamic package. Fashioned from exposed carbon fibre, this revised front splitter and rear diffuser combine to deliver a meaningful reduction in frontal lift with a minimal penalty in additional drag. Combined with visually striking new quad exhaust outlets the Vanquish S has more aggressive appearance, entirely fitting for Aston Martin’s most overtly sporting GT production model. This look can be further enhanced with a range of new options. These include carbon fibre bonnet louvres, new forged 5-spoke diamond turned wheels and a choice of striking painted graphics packs. A

new Vanquish S badge sits proudly on the tailgate as the perfect piece of jewellery. Inside, the Vanquish S can be further personalised with a choice of spectacular new ‘Filograph’ quilted leather and the use of new materials and finishes, such as the Satin Chopped Carbon Fibre fascia panel. Sumptuous Bridge of Weir Caithness leather offers an added touch of luxury and tactility, while Vanquish S embroidery on the headrests provides a crafted finishing detail. Dr. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin President & CEO said: “From the moment the original Vanquish was launched it became a modern icon. It propelled Aston Martin from an era of hand-built cars to one

where craftsmanship and technology combined to create a new kind of great British GT. “In its second generation the Vanquish maintained that momentum with huge engineering advances such as its all-carbon fibre bodywork and compelling, contemporary styling. Now, the Vanquish S takes things a step further, confidently asserting itself within the Aston Martin range and distinguishing itself from the new DB11. A spectacular machine in every sense, the Vanquish S is a magnificent addition to our range.” Vanquish S is available in both Coupe and Volante and deliveries will commence in December 2016.

• JAGUAR CLASSIC REVEALS ‘NEW ORIGINAL’ XKSS TO MEDIA AT PETERSEN MUSEUM IN LOS ANGELES • ONE-OFF CAR HAS BEEN AUTHENTICALLY PRODUCED TO EXACT 1957 SPECIFICATION BY JAGUAR LAND ROVER CLASSIC’S EXPERT CRAFTSMEN • NINE EXAMPLES TO BE HAND-BUILT IN THE UK WITH DELIVERIES TO CUSTOMERS BEGINNING IN 2017

THE ‘NEW ORIGINAL’

JAGUAR XKSS MAKES WORLD DEBUT IN LOS ANGELES

T

he first genuine Jaguar XKSS to be built in almost 60 years was today given its world debut presentation at the Petersen Museum, Los Angeles by Jaguar Classic. The stunning XKSS, finished in Sherwood Green paint, has been created by the Jaguar Classic engineering team ahead of the production of nine cars for delivery to customers across the globe in 2017. Often referred to as the world’s first supercar, the XKSS was originally made by Jaguar as a road-going conversion of the Le Mans-winning D-type, which was built from 1954-1956. In 1957, nine cars earmarked for export to North America were lost in a fire at Jaguar’s Browns Lane factory in the British Midlands; meaning just 16 examples of XKSS were built. Earlier this year Jaguar announced that its Classic division would build the nine ‘lost’ XKSS sports cars for a select group of established collectors and customers. The new one-off XKSS presented in Los Angeles is the summation of 18 months of research and will be used as a blueprint from which the nine continuation cars are built. The nine cars will be completely new, with period chassis numbers from the XKSS chassis log. All cars are now sold at a price in excess of £1million each. The XKSS is the second continuation car to be created by Jaguar, following on from the six Lightweight E-types that were built in 2014. This project helped the team learn to engineer cars that are faithful to the specifications to which they were built in period, and this knowledge 08 motoring | November 2016

INSIDE, THE ‘NEW ORIGINAL’ XKSS FEATURES PERFECT RECREATIONS OF THE ORIGINAL SMITHS GAUGES. EVERYTHING FROM THE WOOD OF THE STEERING WHEEL, TO THE GRAIN OF THE LEATHER SEATS, THROUGH TO THE BRASS KNOBS ON THE XKSS DASHBOARD, IS PRECISELY AS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IN 1957. has been enhanced in creating the ‘new original’ XKSS. The XKSS unveiled in Los Angeles is a period correct continuation, built using a combination of original drawings from Jaguar’s archive and modern technology. The Jaguar Classic engineering team scanned several versions of the 1957 XKSS to help build a complete digital image of the car, from the body to chassis, and including all parts required. The body of the XKSS is made from magnesium alloy, as it was in 1957, and because the original styling bucks do not exist, Jaguar Classic produced a new, bespoke styling buck based on the original bodies from the 1950s. The bodies of the nine new cars will be formed on this buck, using a traditional

process called hand-wheeling. Jaguar Classic’s expert engineers worked with the original frames and from there produced CAD to support build of the chassis. In partnership with the Classic team, frame maker Reynolds – famous for their 531 tubing – was briefed to craft bespoke new parts using imperial measurements, rather than metric. The frames are bronze welded in the same way as the period XKSS chassis tubing. The continuation cars feature period specification four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes with a Plessey pump, and Dunlop tyres with riveted two-piece magnesium alloy wheels. Under the bonnet, the XKSS is supplied with a 262hp 3.4-litre straight six-cylinder Jaguar D-type engine. The engine features

completely new cast iron blocks, new cast cylinder heads and three Weber DC03 carburetors. Inside, the ‘new original’ XKSS features perfect recreations of the original Smiths gauges. Everything from the wood of the steering wheel, to the grain of the leather seats, through to the brass knobs on the XKSS dashboard, is precisely as it would have been in 1957. Minor specification changes have been made only to improve driver and passenger safety. The fuel cell, for example, uses robust, modern materials to support throughput of modern fuels. Customer vehicles will be hand-built beginning this year, and it is estimated that 10,000 man hours will go into building each of the new XKSS cars.

WEATHER TIPS WHEN DRIVING

DO NOT DRIVE unless absolutely necessary SLIPPERY WHEN WET: WEATHER CONDITIONS CAN AFFECT YOUR VEHICLE’S PERFORMANCE WRITES PAUL VELLA, RMF TECHNICAL DIRECTOR. READ THESE TIPS TO KEEP YOURSELF AND OTHERS SAFE WHEN DRIVING IN BAD WEATHER. Reduce your speed and correct your steering, especially when moving from a protected area to an unprotected area, or when meeting large vehicles.

FLOODS

HEAVY RAIN Reduce your speed, as stopping distances can be doubled on wet roads. Use headlights if visibility is reduced. Be aware that roads can be slippery during the first rains after a dry spell. In the event of a breakdown in the rain, don’t open the bonnet because you will get the electrics wet and it will make it more difficult to start the engine. Be aware of vehicles around you. High winds are more problematic for drivers of trucks, buses, campers and drivers who are towing trailers.

Don’t drive in water if you don’t know how deep it is or if it is flowing quickly. Drive slowly to avoid creating waves. Keep the engine revving by slipping the clutch, otherwise water in the exhaust could stall the engine. Driving fast through water is dangerous, even standing water. It is inconsiderate to pedestrians, cyclists or drivers on motorbikes. It can cause expensive damage if water is sucked into the engine. Don’t think that just because you have a diesel engine this might not happen to you. Even if the water appears shallow enough to cross, don't try it. Water hides dips and potholes in the road. Worse yet, there may be no road at all under the water. Flooding can scour away the entire road surface and a significant amount of ground beneath.

Flash floods can come rapidly and unexpectedly. They can occur within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall. Be especially cautious during September to February. Do not drive unless absolutely necessary. Do not drive through flooded areas. If you see a flooded-out road ahead, turn around. Find another route to your destination. If there is no other route, get to higher ground and wait for the waters to subside. If your car stalls, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground. Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control or possible stalling. One foot of water will float almost many vehicles. Two feet of rushing water can sweep away most vehicles — including SUVs and pick-ups.

HEAVY WIND Wind is often accompanied by heavy rain. Stay alert for slippery areas. Drive at a low speed and be

careful especially when driving on country roads. There could be a fallen wall or tree round a corner. Expect sudden gusts at any time, especially on open roads or when overtaking high-sided vehicles. Keep your distance from other vehicles – they could be blown into your way. Be aware of vehicles around you. High winds are more problematic for drivers of trucks, buses, campers, and drivers who are towing trailers. Keep a look-out for objects that can be blown onto the road, such as bags and boxes. These can obstruct your vision or get caught in wheels. Drive

slowly and take careful evasive action as needed.

MIST OR FOG Only drive as fast as conditions allow and maintain a greater distance between you and the car in front. Follow a three-second rule, as a minimum. Use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, when you can’t see the length of a football pitch. If your vehicle has fog lights, they must be used too. Remember to switch them off when visibility improves. Safe Motoring by RMF

Porsche collectors were truly spoilt and many couldn’t resist bidding on the beautiful and highly collectible 1957 Porsche 356A T1 Speedster, which sold for £306,563, the highest value lot of the sale. Speaking immediately after the sale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale, said: “What a sale! One of our best ever and the most successful we’ve had at the Classic Motor Show since we first hosted the auction back in 2012. I’m delighted that we’ve achieved such strong prices for our vendors and it’s a delight to see buyers going home so pleased with their new purchases. I’d like to say a special thank all those involved in helping put the sale

together and make it such a phenomenal success.” No less than seven Jaguar ETypes were offered and amazingly all sold for above their pre-sale estimates. A 1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Roadster, owned by the vendor for 43 years and starring in an official Jaguar video with model David Gandy, had seven phone bidders as well as buyers in the room trying to purchase the car. It eventually sold for an amazing £171,000, nearly £80,000 over its lower estimate. With everything about the car ‘just right’, a 1965 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series I Roadster sold for £146,250, more than £50,000 over its lower estimate, and a ‘barn-find’ 1974 Jaguar E-Type Series III Roadster sold for £69,750, nearly double its lower estimate. It wasn’t only E-Types that proved popular with Jaguar fans. A 1977 Jaguar XJ12 Coupe, a winner of over 18 national concours events, achieved a new world record price, selling for £43,875.

Raising £12,938 for Prostate Cancer UK, a 1969 Morris Mini Super Deluxe, with a fascinating story and restored by Lancaster Insurance to its former glory, was sold to a very generous buyer in the room. Silverstone Auctions’ first sale of 2017 takes place at Race Retro at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire over three days, between the 24th and 26th February, including a dedicated competition car sale and two-day classic road car sale. Entries are now invited into the auction and potential sellers are invited to speak with Silverstone Auctions as soon as possible. Nick added: “We’ve sold even more fantastic cars this year and look forward to next year’s sales and speaking with prospective sellers soon.” To view the full list of results from Silverstone Auctions’ Classic Motor Show Sale please visit: https://www.silverstoneauction s.com/nec-classic-motor-showsale-2016/view_lots/pn/all.

MERCEDES-BENZ GOES FROM COAST TO COAST WITHOUT ROADS dozen Mercedes-Benz four-wheel drive vehicles have successfully traversed the UK, from the east coast to the west coast, without the use of any open public roads. It is believed to be the first ever journey completed off-road. The 12 vehicles – a mixture of GLE, GLS and G-Class models – made the 65-mile journey across the Scottish Highlands, over the course of two days. The vehicles were all standard UK-specification cars, fitted with road-legal ‘mud tyres’, but with no modifications apart from the removal of side steps where fitted. Leading the expedition was the iconic G-Class, which since 1979 has blended rugged go-anywhere ability and luxury. Its permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive, low-range gearbox and three fully lockable differentials ensure that it can cope in the roughest of all terrain – not least the

gravel, rock, wet grass, rivers and gelatinous mud of the Highlands. It is hand-assembled in Graz, Austria, at the rate of just 15 vehicles a day. Although the GLS’s quilted leather massage seats (standard on designo Line) could suggest it is more about opulence than off-roading, the OffRoad package ensures it is equally at home off the beaten track. The OffRoad package adds a centre differential lock; protective underbody panelling; a low-range gearbox; fully manual mode for the automatic transmission; special off-

road programming for the ABS, ESP and 4ETS traction control; and an extra three selectable ride heights for the standard AIRMATIC air suspension. It also adds to the standard Driver Select system’s ‘Off-road’ mode with an ‘Off-road Plus’ mode for especially difficult terrain. The stylish GLE might more commonly be seen on high streets rather than the Highlands, but when also equipped with the Off-Road Package it makes light work of the most arduous of routes. Just like the GLS, the GLE managed the entire off-road route, from rocks to rivers to muddy fields.
