New Marina Now Open on Florida’s Gulf Coast

The St. Joe Company is also nearing a reopening date for Point South Marina at Port St. Joe (formerly the Port St. Joe Marina) and planning additional new marinas, including a location on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) adjacent to West Bay that will be convenient to the new Latitude Margaritaville Watersound development.
Following the destruction of Hurricane Michael, The St. Joe Company has delivered on a promise to build the marina back better than before. St. Joe invested more than $10 million in the rebuild, which included redredging channels, repaving parking and driving areas, replacing the marina’s bulkheads, pilings and piers, fuel dock, swimming pool and ship store. The marina’s new layout features wider docks and the new boat slips are likewise more generously sized, built to accommodate the wider beams of today’s modern yachts and sportfishing boats. The marina will also feature a new shaded fish cleaning and display facility.

The Passing of Marine Industry Leader Len Garofoli
While Tony Mondello has retired, Len recently brought Pier One Broker Mike Mullinger aboard as a partner, assuring that Pier One Yacht Sales will continue to operate despite their loss.
Here is the obituary: Leonard “Len” Garofoli, 67 of Port Charlotte passed away after a brief illness on August 9th. Len was born on January 25th, 1955 in Yeaden Township, PA to Leonard and Irene (Landi) Garofoli. He grew up in New Jersey and attended St. Peter School in Merchantville, Pennsauken High School and TempleWhileUniversity.incollege he was a radio DJ. Len had a gift for working with people. His professional history included event planning for PRG, managing sales for Luhrs Sportfish boats, vice president of sales and marketing for Topaz Marine Corporation, head of dealer development for Nissan and vice president of sales and marketing for Californian and Navigator Yachts.
In 2004 Len created Pier One Yacht Sales. With a clear vision and determination, Len and his partner Tony Mondello built Pier One into a successful 6-office, 61 broker company. Len was known for his integrity, hard work and devotion to his friends and family. He loved to entertain, cook, travel Europe, and spend time perfecting his beautiful yard. Most of all, Len enjoyed spending time with his wife and daughter.

Charts show aids to safe navigation like buoys, beacons, lights, channels, etc. Diamonds are buoys, squares and triangles are fixed markers, and teardrops represent lights with accompanying notes on their flashing pattern printed alongside. You’ll need to learn what these and other symbols look like and what their colors mean. (See below for Chart No. 1 for a quick study guide.) Key landmarks used to assist with visual navigation, like large tanks or towers ashore, are generally depicted with a circle and a dot next to them. They’re great to get visual bearings and a way to double check against the chart where you are.
10.chart.Paper charts are the easiest to learn on while electronic charts, powered by GPS on multi-function displays (chartplotters), are what you’ll find on most boats today. A paper chart is like a map in that you don’t know where on it you are unless you’ve done dead reckoning (kept track as you navigate). E-charts on a plotter will display your current position thanks to GPS, which gives you an important piece of the puzzle. That said, it’s a lot more intuitive to learn the basics on paper charts rather than electronic ones. There’s a wealth of information on a nautical chart and it takes skill to read charts accurately and to be comfortable with them. Learning to read a chart is not only essential for navigation, it can also be fun.

1. Charts come in different scales or ratios of charted versus actual distance. Small scale charts are appropriate for boating on open waters and will show less detail. When navigating near shore, use large scale charts that cover a smaller overall area in greater detail that you’ll need to transit safely.
5. A common depth that runs along a shoal or shore is called a depth contour and appears as solid line with a number that states the depth. Depths are designated in feet, fathoms (six feet) or meters (3.3 feet) and each chart will specify what measurement is used for its depths or “soundings”. It’s usually under the title of the chart and printed in large letters. Depths are generally provided in Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) which is a sort of average based on the local tides.

Nautical charts are maps used in navigating bodies of water. They provide information on depths, dangers, harbors, bridges, and aids to navigation but nautical charts look a little different from land maps. Charts have a lot of detail and they vary somewhat around the world. They take time and instruction to master but you can get the gist with a few basics. Let’s look at the features of typical US charts.

2. Charts have latitude and longitude marked at the edges. Given a set of two numbers (lat/lon), you should be able to locate yourself on a chart anywhere in the world.
4. Most charts will show dry land in a tan color and water in shades of blue or white. White will be very deep, light blue very shallow, and a standard blue shows a depth somewhere in between.
7. Charts have a compass rose printed on them in a magenta color in concentric circles. The outer circle is based on true north and the inner one is angled to point to magnetic north. Because the Earth’s magnetic field changes over time, the inner circle may be off by a couple of degrees and will have to be updated periodically. The compass rose tells you which direction you’ll need to navigate to reach your destination and you’ll need to choose whether you’ll be using true or magnetic north to determine which circle to use. When traveling short distances, the difference will matter little but when crossing oceans, a few degrees can make a big difference.
9. Charts are a snapshot in time – the time they were created. However, buoys can drift off station and sandbars shift with weather. Always keep your eyes “out of the boat” to verify visual information and compare it with what you’re seeing on a

8. Distances are shown in either statute miles (inland waterways, lakes, Intercoastal Waterway) or nautical miles (1.15 statue miles) for offshore waters. A knot is a unit of measurement that depicts distance over time – as in traveling at 10 knots means you’ll make 10 nautical miles per hour.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Local flotillas offer a variety of safety classes, including basic/introductory boating courses and safety courses, navigation, sailing and personal watercraft safety, among others. U.S. Sailing Programs offer instruction in small and large sailboats, windsurfers, and powerboats. All levels of instruction are available around the country for beginner to advanced skills. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUARTDespite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. American Canoe Association Comprehensive resource to find skills courses, assessments, and instructor certification courses for kayak, canoe, raft, safety & rescue, and adaptive paddling.
Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. Tarpon addicts will still be able to get their fix this month. You should still find a few tarpon in the coastal gulf. As tarpon thin out along beaches, they will move to inside waters where you may find them schooling around bridges or rolling on deep grass flats. They will also feed in schools of ladyfish that are feeding on the surface. You should also find juvenile tarpon from 10 to 30-pounds in creeks, canals and turning basins. Fly anglers should score on juvenile tarpon with 8 or 9-weight fly rods, floating or sink tip lines, depending on water depth, and scaled down tarpon flies.

One tournament in particular, the Loop Tournament, in 1971. “Tournament” isn’t just our middle name, it’s our actual name; Operation Loop Development, Southern Anglers Loop Tournament… OLD SALT. We know saltwater fishing tournaments about as well as anyone. We run some of the best fishing tournaments in Florida, heck, maybe in the world. We offer competitive, seawall and sanctioned, tournaments for anglers who fish inshore, offshore, in a boat, in a kayak, on the beach, a seawall or a pier. Trout fishing is usually good in August & September. You may find a big trout in skinny water at first light. Focus on mullet or bait schools to find them. Fly poppers or Gurglers should be very effective at that time of day. I always release big trout over 19”, since they are usually females that may be full of roe. One of the largest trout that I have seen caught and released on a fly was a 7 ½-pound fish that blew up on a Gurgler, fished in glass minnow schools! I like the same areas for big trout that I like for Afterreds.it gets bright and starts to warm up, drop out to deeper grass flats (4’ to 8’) for trout, blues, Spanish mackerel and more. I like to drift and cast ahead of my drift with an Ultra Hair Clouser fly fished on a sink tip fly line. I make a series of drifts to locate fish and then shorten the drift or anchor depending on conditions. Ladyfish may feed in glass minnow schools and if they stay up long enough it will attract trout, blues, mackerel, tarpon or sharks. Wide profile flies, such as Enrico Puglisi style flies, fished slowly around the edges of breaking fish will help keep ladyfish off your lure or fly and give you a chance to catch a tarpon. When blues, Spanish mackerel or sharks are in the mix add 6” of wire or heavy fluorocarbon. Also look for tripletail around crab trap floats, buoys or channel markers in inshore waters this month. My Grassett Flats Minnow fly with a weed guard should work well for tripletail. A weed guard is important since it may help you avoid hooking the crab trap float or line. You might find false albacore (little tunny) or Spanish mackerel starting to show up in the coastal gulf this month. Look for baitfish to find them. The Tampa Bay ship channel is often one of the first areas that they will show up early in the season. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, poppers or Crease flies should all work well. You’ll need to add wire or heavy fluorocarbon when toothy fish are in the mix. Even though it is one of the hottest months of the year, there are lots of options this month. I usually tarpon fish as long as I can either in the coastal gulf or in inside waters. An early start for snook or tarpon around lighted docks or bridges and then on to the flats for trout, blues, jacks and more is a good option. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!
Many tarpon will move into estuaries this month. You may also find juvenile tarpon in creeks, canals and turning basins. Reds should be schooling on shallow flats and big trout will prowl the same waters at dawn. Also, look for trout on deep grass flats mixed with blues, pompano, Spanish mackerel and more. Catch and release snook fishing should be good around lighted docks at night or in the surf. Look for false albacore (little tunny) to possibly show up in the coastal gulf later in the month.

Hosted by the nonprofit Ladies Let’s Go Fishing Foundation, the “No-Yelling School of Fishing” offers classroom presentations, two networking events, hands-on skill practice and optional charter boat fishing. Classes will be held at the waterfront Elks Lodge in Tavernier FL. No equipment or experience is necessary. Optional offshore or inshore charter fishing out of Islamorada, FL is offered on Friday and Sunday with prizes awarded for the LLGF Fishing Fever tournament. Participants can also choose to fish from their own boats. Activities launch Friday evening with a networking social 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Snook and reds remain closed to harvest south of State Rd 64 in Manatee County on the west coast of Florida, south to the south bank of Gordon Pass in Collier County. Snook and reds are catch and release only in that zone until Sep 1, 2022. Spotted Seatrout has reopened in that zone with a 3 fish per person, bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Reds should school up this month. You should find them on shallow flats where they’ll be easier to find when the tide is low. Look for “nervous” water when it is slick calm or a slick patch of water when there is a ripple on the water. They may push a wake that looks like a boat wake. I try to be as quiet as possible in shallow water, poling to locate them. Once you’ve located a school of reds, try to get ahead of them to intercept them, much like tarpon fishing. If you work around the edges of the school, you may be able to catch a few of them before they spook. We often also find big jacks, blues and other predators in the mix along with reds. Fly poppers or Gurglers may draw some big strikes!

Summer 2022 has set in with hot temperatures, beautiful mornings are perfect for early fishing trips, the water comes alive at sunrise with surface baitfish, game fish waking up and going for the bait fishes. Variety of different species is great during summer, we are catching all the usual backwaters fish like Seatrout, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and lots of others, also less common fish like weakfish, lane snapper, pompano, permit and you never know what kind of fish may bite, always expect a couple surprise catches in summer. Black Drum are a year round resident fish here in the North Indian River Lagoon at New Smyrna and Daytona Beach. Summer time variety fishing in the backcountry here on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon at New Smyrna Beach has been very active, lots of species are scattered through the backcountry during the summer inshore saltwater fishing pattern. The summer has come to an end for kids. Back to school! That does not mean fishing comes to an end for the rest of us. The summer snook bite has been excellent, plenty of snook in the ICW around docks and seawalls. The bigger snook have been in the inlets and along the beaches. Unfortunately the past week anglers still had to deal with rough conditions in the inlets and battle the mass amounts of sea weed along our coastline. The snook have been striking live pilchards. Artificial enthusiasts DOA Terror Eyz have been the bait of choice. The silver king have been spread out as of late do to the windy conditions. Anglers can find tarpon all through the ICW working channels, mangrove shorelines and docks. Live baits rigged on circle hooks best way to get the tarpon to strike. Low light hours tarpon are willing to strike DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail in Arkansas Glow and Terror Eyz in Pearl Green back. The beautiful waters of the palm beaches offer more than snook and tarpon to target. Jacks have been in big schools striking live baits and top water plugs. Sharks have been abundant as well as the follow the mackerel and bluefish schools along channel edges. Plenty of action for anglers to enjoy a day out on the Palmwater. Beach Jupiter Inshore Report Finally the wind machine stopped for the Palm Beaches. Calm seas, light variable winds made for epic fishing. The sea weed along the beaches was still present, but the calm waters allowed for the sea weed to settle and anglers to sight fish crystal clear waters. Beach fishing was fantastic the past week, calm waters allowed for bait schools to school in troughs along the beach. Plenty of bait signals predator species like snook, tarpon, jacks and sharks to feed on these bait schools. Snook could be seen cruising the shorelines in search of there next meal. Not far behind the snook, tarpon allowed anglers to sight fish and present live baits and DOA Terror Eyz in there path creating drag screaming Inletaction.action for snook stayed consistent, DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail in Mole’ rigged with a 3/8oz jig, excellent bait of choice as well as live baits. Tarpon, jacks, sharks and snapper all species that offered steady action. Snapper fishing provided plenty of action for anglers along rock jetties and drop offs. Inshore fishing anglers had a blast targeting big jacks on top water Rapala skitter walks, also catching bluefish and mackerel. Docks, sea walls and drops offs all great areas to target a plethora of species. Snook, tarpon, jacks always main target, but sometimes we surprised we don’t see often in the ICW. This catch was caught by a JR Well
Tarpon are a summer staple along the main channel and in the backwaters, they are notorious for having lock jaw for baits on the end of a line, but they do occasionally strike. Nick from Michigan had the charmed bite on this beautiful Silver King that stayed hooked through the fight and several jumps, into the net, and a quick photo before release and he swam away strong.BlackDrum are one of our favorite quality fish here, roaming along the bottom of deeper channels and holes and sometimes on the flats looking for a shrimp or crab meal, John visiting from Connecticut caught a few along with this good Drum of about 5 lbs.
