An Entertaining Three-day Experience that’s So Miami MIAMI,

FL – A new kind of boat show will come ashore just in time for summer 2023 that will offer the kind of entertainment and energy Miami is known for. The SoFlo crew has set out to create a unique experience at the SoFlo Boat Show that will keep every aspect of the boating lifestyle in mind. Between May 19–21, 2023, nautical enthusiasts from all over will descend upon the historic Miami Marine Stadium to see and board hundreds of boats, shop marine accessories and gadgets, while enjoying Miami’s colorful entertainment, music, food, and art.

Latinos Who’s Careers Shaped the Coast Guard, Sailing, And Olympic Sports

are now Latino-identifying individuals who have started to pave the path for the next generation. As a refresher, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are currently 62.1 Hispanics living in the United States, making them the second largest racial or ethnic group in the United States.

The rise of Latinos within the United States makes it not only likely, but highly probable, that sports that were once considered off limits for Latinos, will slowly but surely start to become more diverse and inclusive.

Some of the below Hispanic Trailblazers and their contributions to their respective industries are just the tip of the iceberg of how Latinos have helped mold and

shape their respective industries. Their contributions date back to the early 1800s and bring us straight into the current day.

And in some ways it all starts with the United States Coast Guard’s records of Latinos playing key roles as keepers at lighthouse stations.

MEET JUAN ANDREU

A fellow lighthouse keeper, Andreu is noted as the first ever Hispanic American to serve in the Coast Guard. He was the appointed keeper of the St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida from 1824 to 1845.

Andreu died in December of 1859 due

Maria Mestre de los Dolores Andreu was married to Juan Andreu and lived in the lighthouse together with their children. After Andreu’s tragic death in 1859, it’s said that it became clear that the best person to replace Juan was Maria. Her marriage had simultaneously turned into an apprenticeship on how to run the lighthouse. In 1859, Maria became the first Hispanic American woman to join the Coast Guard, run the lighthouse, and oversee federal shore installation, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

MEET JOSEPH XIMENEZ

Ximenez’s time in the Coast Guard overlapped with both Juan and Maria’s time. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, in 1843, Joseph Ximenez became the first Hispanic American to oversee a Coast Guard vessel, known as Carysfort Reef Lightship.

Fast forward almost 100 years to Justo Gonzalez. In February 1944, Gonzalez became the first Hispanic American to become chief petty officer in the Coast Guard with his promotion becoming official in the fall of 1948.

MEET ROMANA BORREGO

In 1974, Borrego became the first Hispanic-American woman to enlist in active duty Coast Guard. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, by 1998, Borrego earned promotion to the YNCS and became the first Latina woman to reach E8.

MEET LTJG KATHERINE TIONGSON

Tiongson has more than one first to her name. In 1991, she became the first Latina to command an afloat unit and in her career, she also became the first Latina female intelligence officer in the Coast Guard.

MEET RONALD J. RABAGO

Rabago served a 36-year tenure in the United States Coast Guard (1978-2014) and became the first Hispanic American to be promoted to rear admiral.

Born in 1996, Alvarez is a championship winning, Mexican-American synchronized swimmer with strong ties to the Olympics. She’s competed not once, but twice, and her Team USA bio shares that Alvarez’s father coached at the Olympic level and her grandfather worked behind the scenes in the 1980 Olympic games.

MEET CJ PEREZ

CJ Perez started her official competitive sailing career in 2016 (at just 13 years old) and in less than six years has piled up titles and blazed a new path. Perez is the first Latina to win multiple championships in competitive sailing, according to Oracle.

Mercury Racing Launches Hurricane Ian Relief Program

Donation Match, T-Shirt Sales to Assist Florida Power Boat Communities

Seared Florida Tuna Steaks with Mediterranean Relish and Herb Oil

Ingredients

Seared Florida Tuna Steaks

4 (6-ounce) tuna steaks

1 cup Kalamata olives, pitted, sliced

3 cloves fresh garlic, minced

1 cup grape tomatoes, halved

2 tablespoons capers, drained

1/4 cup fresh herbs (basil, parsley), hand torn

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

2 tablespoons olive oil

1/2 cup feta cheese, diced sea salt to taste fresh ground pepper to taste

Florida Herb Oil

1/4 cup fresh parsley

1/4 cup fresh basil

3 cloves fresh garlic, minced

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1/4 cup olive oil sea salt to taste fresh ground pepper to taste

Directions:

Seared Florida Tuna Steaks - In a medium-sized mixing bowl combine olives, garlic, tomatoes, capers, herbs, lemon juice, olive oil and feta cheese. Lightly stir ingredients to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Preheat a medium-sized sauté pan over medium-high heat. Season both sides of the tuna steaks lightly with salt and pepper. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the preheated sauté pan. Carefully add the tuna steaks to the sauté pan. Cook tuna steaks to preferred doneness (tuna cooks very quickly, and is usually served rare). To serve tuna, slice each steak in half and plate them with even amounts of relish on top. Garnish the tuna with the herb oil.

Florida Herb Oil - In a food processor or blender, add all ingredients. Blend to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. To serve, drizzle herb oil over seafood or use as a bread dipping sauce.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY OFFERS VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS AND SAFE BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat.

completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime.

Temporary Certificate exams are made available to the public through contractors. The temporary certificate is valid for 12 months from the issue date. CLEARWATER COAST GUARD AUXILIARY TEACHING BOATING SAFETY CLASSES

ONLINE - 2022 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students.

The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to

conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic.

Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Fall Fishing Tackle Tips

November is the month I pick to get my tackle in shape for the fall, and the start of my favorite month for fishing.

Preparing your fishing tackle for the fall fishing is a must updating your tackle different colors on your artificial baits, medium running baits, lighter leader material and hook sizes.

Here are a few tips.

• Give your reels a good cleaning by loosening the drags and lubricating the gears. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this there are several good tackle dealers in Tampa who can service your reels at a reasonable price.

• Check your line guides on the rods for any scratches or nicks. Use cotton swabs or borrow a panty hose from your wife when she’s not looking and cut it into small strips. It will last a long time, so don’t worry, she won’t miss one panty hose. Now run the cotton swab or piece of panty hose through the guide. If the panty hose clings or the cotton sticks to the guide, replace the guide or risk losing a fish later.

A slight scratch or cut on the guide will cut your line under pressure from a pulling fish.

• At the end of the day never put your hook on the guide if you rod doesn’t have a built-in

hook holder as this can and will scratch the guide. Instead, take an electrical nylon tie with a screw hole built in and place it just above the top grip on the rod. This allows a place for the hook to sit.

• Most anglers take too much tackle on a fishing trip. Remember the last time you went on a vacation with your wife, and she brought half the closet along? There are many new small soft sided tackle boxes that can handle all your needs. I suggest you leave most of your tackle at home and replenish your tackle box as needed. In addition, small medicine bottles work great for hooks and small sinkers to keep on the console of the boat and use a needed.

Hopefully the honey dos are done, and your tackle is ready for fishing. Remember, fishing heats up as the water temperature drops.

November will bring lower water temperatures and an increase in fish activity. Look for snook cruising the mangrove shorelines of creeks and rivers live shrimp or fresh cut ladyfish are one of their favorites in the fall. Flounder will hit jigs tipped with shrimp bounced on the bottom under docks, bigger trout move into the channels and deeper cuts around the mangroves. Redfish

The Gulf Coast of Florida experienced a devastating weather event earlier this month when Hurricane Ian made land fall off the coast of Fort Myers Beach as a near category 5 storm. Thankfully the Nature Coast, which includes Crystal River and Homosassa, was spared, as we’re located 150 miles north of the storms epicenter. It’s unimaginable to think what would have happened to our area had this storm made landfall along our coastline, as was the projected track just two days prior to this storms landfall.

The last Hurricane to affect our area was back in 2016 when Hurricane Hermine skirted our coast as a strong Category 1 storm. Although this storm was nothing compared to Ian there was still wide spread flooding, power outages, and loss of life. My home in particular was inundated with nearly 3ft of water and loss of power for days. The struggle of seeing you’re belonging soaking wet and strewn in every direction is heart breaking and my thoughts and prayers go out to our friends in Lee County.

So in the aftermath of a major storm I’m often asked what happens to the fishing when a storm of this magnitude enters the Gulf. My

will start their move under docks and around bridges looking for food, live shrimp are one of the best baits just before change of tide.

Sheepshead bait stealers of Tampa Bay start their migration looking for mates and can be found around rocky bottom, bridges, and docks. This is start of the season to fish for them until late February when they move back out to the gulf waters. Live shrimp, dead shrimp or fiddler crabs are best baits.

Grouper action gears up as the bigger gags move closer to shore and make their appearance around the Skyway bridge and the ships channel cut bait with a small strip of squid will increase the bite.

Best live baits: Shrimp, mud minnows, small silver dollar size pinfish and fiddler crabs.

Artificial baits: Soft baits: Saltwater assassin Hard baits: Mirrolures.

answer to that is imagine the trauma that certain fish species endure before, during, and after a storm. I mean its not everyday a Tarpon finds itself swimming down major roads or even though a neighborhood backyard. Fish move!! They get the heck away from all of the damage as there are no fences in the Gulf and fish are free to roam.

The Saturday after the storm I loaded up my kids, niece, and nephew on the boat just to scope out the area and see if anything had changed. Were there any islands missing? Trees floating in the river? Anyone’s home damaged. These were all thoughts that crossed my mind. As we made our run down river it was apparently clear that we made it out of this storm free and clear and thus my focus shifted towards finding fish.

Never, ever did I expect to see what I saw on this afternoon trip. Schools of Tripletail are rare at times especially inshore. In the past I have seen schools of 5,6, maybe 10 fish in a school wrapped around a buoy. But on this day there were schools of Tripletail swimming everywhere. Balls of 15+ fish, pods of 5, singles, swimming everywhere!!! You would catch one, release it, and

look up and the boat was surrounded by Tripletail. This was the most incredible sight I have seen in regards to Tripletail and I know it was all due to the storm. The interesting part of the entire scenario is that all of those fish were swimming in one direction, Northwest. That tells me everything I need to know. Fish flee when major impending weather is on the horizon and the Tripletail I was seeing were swimming as far away from that storm as possible.

And this is just one scenario that I was lucky to see first hand. Did I mention that there have been two Bonefish landed along the Nature Coast in the last week? I can assure you that those fish didn’t just show up for any reason. This species of fish’s swimming patterns were all weather related.

All in all we are extremely blessed to have dodged Hurricane Ian this season. Now lets look forward to all of the great fishing that comes in the aftermath. I’m excited to see what’s going to arrive next on our flats.

Fishing is Getting Good Again

Hurricane Ian was devastating to our neighbors to the west and we wish them a speedy and total recovery. On our side we did not get any of the effects of the hurricane. What the hurricane did though was stir up the Atlantic below us and sent a bunch of mahis our way.

First the mahis were a bit offshore but then last week a bunch of big mahis moved into the edge and even shallower chasing flying fish and ballyhoo. We had a trip Monday where we caught almost a dozen 10 -18-pound mahis in 42 feet of water chasing ballyhoo. The day before we caught 20 nice size mahis while fishing on the edge. It seems that the mahis may have pushed on but I’m sure we will see more while kite fishing for sailfish.

We also did a kite fishing trip last week when we had some wind and blue water and caught three sailfish on a half day trip so the sailfish are around, and we will be targeting

them tomorrow.

Just before the hurricane we did a couple of daytime swordfish trips and were rewarded with a swordfish on both our trips. The swordfish were right around 100 pounds, and we are set for the bigger fish to migrate into our area. October through February is prime daytime swordfish season. Not only are there more swords in the area but the bigger 300-to-500-pound swordfish are more prevalent this time of year. That’s truly the beauty of swordfishing is that you don’t know if your next swordfish will be 50 pounds or 500 pounds!

We also did a quick trip to Bimini to do some high-speed trolling for wahoo and we were successful. We didn’t stack any big numbers, but the fish were decent in size (40-pound range) and the signs were there that the wahoo fishing should be getting better. There was a ton of flying fish (bait for wahoo) and clean blue water with north current. Wahoo fishing in Bimini usually starts in October and could last into March. I would say the best months though are November –

The shakeup in the waters caused by Hurricane Ian has jumpstarted the fall fishery.

Thanks to much cooler water temps, the bait migration from the north is in full force, specifically ballyhoo, cigar minnows, sardines and pilchards. Trailing behind the baitfish are the hungry pelagic predators as they end their migration to the Keys Atlantic waters for the winter. Most notable are the sailfish, but cobia and king mackerel also arrive from the north. Meanwhile, the dolphin and tuna creep closer to the reef edge to get in on the feast.

And it’s not just the pelagics. Also enjoying the bounty of baitfish are our year-round reef species, mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snapper, black and red grouper, large cero mackerel, amberjack and more. Too many to list. As the sailfish arrive in increasing numbers, they come with an appetite and quickly home in on the baitfish. The sailfish are most often seen spraying ballyhoo in the 30-foot shallows early in the morning and late in the evening.

This is a sight-fishing game, so anglers with towers on their boats have an advantage. Look for frigate birds diving the water surface in the distance. This indicates where the sailfish have corralled the ballyhoo.

When the sailfish attack the ballyhoo, the baitfish shower out of the water. The goal is to get yourself in the zone before the attack takes

place. Be sure to have a dozen or so live ballyhoo in your live well, ready to throw at the target sailfish.

When the early-morning action calms down around ten or so, it’s back to catching a few fresher ‘hoos to get you through your day. Anchor up, chum them to the boat and either throw a cast net or hair hook them.

Advance directly offshore of where the initial sailfish action was – or where you’ve seen activity in the past – and put a spread of live ballyhoo just outside the reef edge anywhere from 90 to 120 feet of water. This is where the sailfish lurk during the day, waiting for an opportunity to eat. Any wandering ballyhoo becomes an easy snack.

It’s not always sailfish spraying the ballyhoo, so be prepared as quite often we’ll see quality size dolphin in the 15- to 20-pound class chasing the baitfish.

While live-baiting off the reef edge, it’s also productive to try for kingfish. Run a bait down 20 to 30 feet with a small trace of wire and 4 to 6 ounces of lead to catch a king or two for the smoker. It’s not unknown for a sailfish to be taken on that downrod, so be prepared for that as well.

The yellowtail snapper bite gets going in earnest with the cooling waters on the reef. This is when we start to see a mixed bag in the catches, with more mangrove snappers getting up shallow. It always pays to have a bottom

As you can see the fishing has gotten better and we are starting to get busy again. Now is the time to book your winter sailfish trips, daytime swordfish trips or your trip to Bimini for some high-speed trolling for wahoo!

rod down in search of mutton snappers and nice size black groupers.

For the yellowtails and mangroves, you want plenty of chum with YellowtailUp, SnapperUp and Mojo Oats from Aquatic Nutrition to make your slop. Small pieces of ballyhoo are the best baits. For the down rod, use a nice live bait – preferably ballyhoo this time of year – but pilchards or pinfish will also work.

The bay and gulf side fisheries rev up as well during November. Good size mangroves are on the grass banks, wrecks and channel cuts. And the Spanish mackerel show up in huge numbers. This is the month for your mack attack!

There are no specific spots for the Spanish mackerel. We like to anchor up near a piece of bottom structure, but not right on it. Put a block of Bionic double-ground chum in the water. And wait. The mackerel should show in short order.

Use a fresh shrimp threaded on a jighead, cast back in the slick and retrieved quickly. The strike can be jarring. If there’s not a lot of floating bay grass, small shiny spoons and small bucktails will also do the job. Just remember to have a foot-long or less trace of #4 wire to prevent bite-offs.
