How to Double Anchor a Boat

Every boater eventually runs into those tricky situations. For example, perhaps you’re battling unexpected currents during a saltwater fishing trip or trying to stay put in a crowded marina. That’s when knowing how to double anchor your boat becomes essential! Double anchoring isn’t complicated, but it’s exactly what it sounds like – using two anchors to secure your boat. And the beauty of this technique? It provides that extra stability when standard singleanchor setups just won’t cut it. In this guide, we’ll walk through exactly when you should double anchor and show you how to do it right. We’ve used these techniques countless times in various conditions, and they’ve saved us from drifting into trouble more than once.

Why Double Anchor a Boat? - Let’s cut to the chase about why double anchoring makes sense. Here are the situations where that second anchor isn’t just nice to have - it’s essential:

• Strong Winds and Currents: A single anchor might not have enough holding power in these conditions. Double anchoring your boat in powerful winds and currents prevents drifting or swinging out of control.

• Crowded Anchorages: In busy anchorages, your boat will likely swing back and forth. Double-anchoring a boat here is a great way to reduce the risk of accidental collisions.

• Unreliable Bottom Conditions: In soft

mud, sand, or other materials without a lot of holding power, double anchoring your boat adds security.

Step by Step:

How to Double Anchor a Boat

There are a couple of ways to double anchor a boat. One way is setting two anchors off the boat’s bow. Another is setting one anchor off the bow and the second off the stern. And the technique you choose depends on the situation you’re in!

Use the bow-only method when handling shifting winds or currents in open waters. Go with the bow-and-stern approach when you need to stay perfectly still in narrow channels or while anchoring overnight in tidal zones.

But, the most common technique is the Bahamian Moor. Here’s how to set up this double anchor successfully:

Step 1: One Anchor into the CurrentFirst, drop an anchor into the current, securing it normally. Then, back the boat up slowly to set the hook. You’ll feel that satisfying tug when it grabs hold – like when a fish takes the bait, except this catch keeps your boat in place!

Step 2: Reverse the Boat - Next, continue backing up until you’ve created a distance about twice the length of your anchor rode.

Step 3: Drop the Second Anchor - Now, drop the second anchor directly down-current from your first one. This creates that perfect

opposing tension you’re looking for. It’s like putting your boat in a comfortable hammock between two trees.

Step 4: Move to a Middle Position - Lastly, position your boat halfway between the two anchors. Give it a few minutes to settle and check that you’re holding steady.

Both anchors should pull in different directions, like a well-balanced tug-of-war that keeps your boat right where you want it.

Tips to Prevent Line Fouling

• Avoid slack lines: If there’s slack in the lines, the one not under load could drift into the running gear and cause issues.

• Switch anchor lines: Transfer the lines from the bow anchor chock to the forward deck cleats, leaving just enough slack to let the boat pivot smoothly.

• Use chafe protection: Depending on your boat’s deck and cleat configuration, consider adding chafe protection to prevent damage to the lines.

Double Anchoring a Boat When Beaching

This helpful technique isn’t limited to openwater anchoring. In fact, it’s a great way to secure your boat when you’re anchoring near shallow waters!

Taking a break from bass fishing or tubing? Beaching your boat with a double anchor is a safe, reliable way to keep it from drifting.

Here’s how to double anchor when you’re beaching your boat:

• Position Your Boat Near the Shore: First, approach the shore and drop the bow anchor in the water at a safe distance from the beach. This helps secure the front of your boat while you set up the second anchor.

• Set the Second Anchor: Once the bow anchor is set, step off the boat (or have someone else help you). Grab a second anchor, usually a spike-style, and carry it from the boat to the beach.

• Secure the Anchor to the Beach: The next step is to secure the second anchor to the shore. Finally, check that both anchors are firmly holding your boat in place.

Learning How to Double Anchor a Boat: Key Takeaways

When it comes to boating safety, double anchoring can be a game-changer in challenging situations. It’s beneficial in heavy wind or strong currents and helps prevent your boat from swinging into neighboring boats in crowded anchorages.

Despite its importance, double anchoring isn’t complicated to master. This technique provides stability and peace of mind in strong currents, crowded marinas, and shallow waters. Follow the steps above, and you’ll keep your boat secure and look like you know what you’re doing – which is half the battle in boating!

The world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry is set to return to the waters of Stockholm after a short winter break. New data from autumn operations shows that Nova has been a success—both with passengers and for the climate.

Candela P-12 is the world’s first passenger ferry that combines electric propulsion with hydrofoil technology, allowing it to literally fly above the water surface – with lower energy consumption and higher speeds. The first unit, named Nova, has operated in Stockholm’s public transport system during the autumn.

As the service resumed on April 15 after the ice season, new statistics from Region Stockholm confirm that the vessel is a major success – both for passengers and the environment.

Nova emits 95% less CO2 compared to the conventional dieselpowered vessels Lux and Sunnan, which operate the same route, and use 84% less energy per passenger-kilometre.

At the same time, statistics show that Nova is extremely popular; most departures have been fully booked – often with long queues. The popularity stems from Nova reducing travel time between Tappström (Ekerö center) and Stockholm City Hall to 30 minutes, compared to about an hour by car or bus.

The data also shows that Nova attracts more people to travel on water, with a 30% increase in ridership on route 89.

“Nova is drawing commuters to the other vessels as well. That’s especially exciting, since one of our goals is to show that

with fast, comfortable waterborne transport, we can get car commuters to switch to waterborne transport,” says Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela.

Region Stockholm, which operates the service, will now increase Nova’s service from five days a week to daily operations by May.

The Candela P-12 with a cruising speed of 25 knots, is the fastest electric ship in the world. It is also faster than Stockholm’s fastest dieselpowered archipelago ferries. Thanks to its speed and low wake signature, the vessel is well-suited to both urban areas, where speed restrictions are typically in place due to conventional ferries causing damaging wake, and sensitive ecosystems.

“Demonstrating that the technology is mature and fit for demanding public transport use is important. This is the third generation of our foiling technology, and with lessons learned from producing over 100 leisure vessels, we’re scaling up production to meet demand,” says Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and Founder of Candela. Candela already has P-12 customers around the world – from Saudi Arabia to New Zealand and the USA.

“We are incredibly happy that Region Stockholm has enabled us to demonstrate the hydrofoil technology in the city’s public transport. We see that waterways in most cities have enormous potential for fast, low-cost, and emission-free transport that can relieve road networks and connect communities. This is just the beginning,” says Gustav Hasselskog. Facts:

• Nova’s CO2 emissions: 23 g/pkm; the average for other vessels on the route is 439 g/pkm.

• Nova’s energy consumption: 0.39 kWh/ pkm; the average for other vessels on the route is 3.31 kWh/pkm.

• Fastest travel time with Nova direct between Tappström and Klara Mälarstrand: approx. 30 minutes (with speed exemption at 22 knots from Gröndalsbron to City Hall). Other boats on the line take 45–55 minutes.

• 120 departures completed

• 2,326 total passengers carried

• Occupancy: 80.83%, in reality higher due to onboard training personnel.

Inshore Fishing Report

Inshore fishing around Johns Pass and the surrounding bay area is shaping up beautifully as we move further into spring.

We’re seeing some solid transitional movement from our snook, with more of these linesiders making their way out of the back bay systems and staging along mangrove shorelines, creek mouths, and points where they can ambush bait.

Trout action continues to impress, especially along the beaches and passes where they’ve been feeding heavily on small whitebait and shrimp. The average size has been solid lately, and they’re hitting soft plastics and live shrimp with gusto.

Redfish remain steady across the region. While they’ve been a little finicky, we’re still managing to locate quality fish along the flats, oyster bars, and mangrove edges. Look for active mullet schools and moving water to help you pinpoint feeding zones.

Sheepshead are still chewing well, especially around the bridges, docks, jetties, and other structure. Fiddler crabs, small shrimp, or pieces of oyster or clam have all been working great.

We’re also seeing great numbers of black drum cruising the flats and hanging near bridge pilings. These are often caught on fresh shrimp or crabs.

Mackerel have officially arrived in full force! These fast-moving pelagics are crashing bait pods along the beaches and into the passes. Keep a pitch rod ready with a flashy spoon, Gotcha plug, or white bucktail jig.

Flounder have been more hit or miss, but a few are still being found around sandy patches near structure or on the edges of flats. Slow-rolling soft plastics or jigging near bottom is your best bet.

Fishing Tips

• Snook: Use live baits like greenbacks, threadfins, and shrimp, or try flair hawks and soft plastics at night.

• Redfish: Look for them around mangroves, oyster bars, and flats, and use dead baits during higher tides.

• Trout: Target them with soft plastics, white bait, and shrimp around deeper flats and potholes.

• Tarpon: Target them during the full moon with crab flushes, making it an ideal time to target them.

• Flounder: Find them near sandy bottoms and structures, biting on bottom baits.

• Pompano: Be prepared to move frequently to stay on their bite.

• Sharks: Use big dead baits in areas with moving water.

Offshore Fishing Report

The deepwater (20-fathom) closure has ended, and that means we now have access once again to our most productive offshore zones! Get ready for action, because the bite is already heating up across the board.

Red grouper are coming up in strong numbers on hard bottom, ledges, and potholes in the 100 to 150foot range. Whole squid, threadfin, and larger live baits like pinfish are working well. Slow-pitch jigs are also picking off some really nice fish for those willing to put in the work.

Mangrove snapper are also cooperating nicely offshore,

West Central Fly Fishing and Light Tackle Report - Tampa Bay Spring has officially arrived on Florida’s west central coast, and with it comes a surge of activity in our local estuaries and backwaters. From Sarasota to Chassahowitzka, warming water temperatures—starting in the low 60s and now pushing into the 70s—have triggered a noticeable uptick in fish movement and feeding behavior. For anglers targeting speckled sea trout, redfish, and snook, March has been a rewarding month on both fly and light tackle.

Speckled Sea Trout

As expected with the seasonal shift, speckled trout are beginning to spread out across the flats and are no longer as tightly concentrated. However, consistent numbers are still being found in deeper potholes and elevated tidal zones where oxygen levels are optimal.

Fly anglers have had success with Deceivers in the shallows, while Clouser Minnows are the top choice for targeting fish holding deeper. Downsizing to a 15-pound leader can make a noticeable difference in getting more eats, especially in clear water conditions. On the light tackle side, the NLBN 4” Mullet has been an outstanding producer, especially

when targeting larger trout near structure or transitional edges.

Redfish

Redfish have been a bit temperamental during the outgoing tide but are quick to turn on during the first push of the incoming tide. Timing and tide position have been crucial.

especially around structure where the current is moving. The cut threadfin on a double snell rig continues to be the go-to technique. Yellowtail are also showing up in solid numbers, particularly for anglers who scale down to lighter leader and smaller chunks of squid or baitfish.

Triggerfish are still open and biting well on squid strips and smaller pieces of cut bait. These delicious reef dwellers are an excellent addition to any cooler and provide lots of action on bottom.

We’re also seeing good numbers of porgies, vermillion snapper, and almacos mixed in for those fishing deeper water. The heads and tails are steady and reliable for building a mixed bag.

And finally, keep an eye on the pelagics— kingfish, blackfin tuna, and even the occasional wahoo are all possible right now as we get closer to the full moon and with water temps steadily climbing.

Seasonal Openings:

• Red grouper are open Jan 1st and should remain open until end of may

• Triggerfish are open all year EXCEPT Jan, Feb, June, & July

• Amberjack are open September & October

• Red snapper are open June 1st through august and perhaps even a bit longer!

• Gags will open most of the month of September **all other species are open all year**

For fly anglers, shrimp patterns remain a staple for sight fishing on the flats, especially when fish are actively transitioning. In deeper holes, larger Puglisi-style baitfish patterns have drawn strong reactions. Artificial anglers are scoring with paddle tails on jig heads, particularly in staging areas where fish wait for incoming water.

Snook have already pushed into their spring-summer zones, settling into elevated tidal zones adjacent to deeper water where they’ll likely remain for the next couple of months. Activity has ramped up with the warmer temps, and they’re

feeding with more aggression.

Fly anglers are finding success with larger baitfish imitations, like EPstyle streamers, though a well-placed shrimp pattern will still get crushed, especially on calmer mornings. Light tackle anglers continue to crush with both the NLBN 4” Mullet and 3” paddle tails, particularly when working ambush points on a moving tide.

Fishing Adventure in Belize: A Day at the Barrier Reef Tania and I had the incredible opportunity to fish the pristine reefs of Belize on Wednesday, March 19, during our cruise through the Western Caribbean. We arrived in Belize City around 8:00 AM and, after taking a tender to shore, met up with Captain Patrick, with Wave Splash Adventures, and his cousin Percy of Royal Belize Adventures at the dock.

As we pulled away, a pod of dolphins greeted us, a beautiful reminder of God’s incredible creation. Our first task was to secure live bait, so we made a stop at a small island near the mangroves. The island, once a resort, was now abandoned, though a man still lived there, surviving off the land. While we had already gathered bait, Captain Patrick generously traded food and water with the man in exchange for more.

By 10:00 AM, we were fishing along the breathtaking Belize Barrier Reef. The friendly competition between Tania and me quickly began when she landed the first fish—a

yellowtail snapper—within minutes. Captain Patrick and Percy, enjoying our competitive spirit, joined in, opting for the challenge of handlining.

The bite was steady but not fast, with Tania leading the charge. Percy was the last to catch a fish, but he made it count—a massive dog snapper. He proudly claimed that he fished for quality over quantity. I warned him that Tania has a way of surprising everyone by out-fishing the entire boat.

Around 1:00 PM, Captain Patrick suggested trolling as we made our way back in. Though Tania isn’t usually a fan of trolling, she agreed, as reef trolling is quite different from what we experience in Florida. Using an Eagle Claw shallow-diving lure, we trolled at around 2 mph. To our surprise, we continued landing fish, including yellowtail snapper, strawberry grouper, and the highlight of the day—Tania’s nicesized barracuda.

Overall, we had an unforgettable day fishing in Belize, catching numerous yellowtail snapper, large dog snapper, strawberry grouper, and other reef fish. I’d highly recommend Captain Patrick of Wave Splash Adventures to anyone looking to fish or snorkel in Belize City. His knowledge of the reefs, hospitality, and friendly competition made for an amazing adventure.

Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers. May your fishing adventures be safe, blessed, and filled with tight lines and good times! Until next time, keep casting and chasing those dreams on the water.

still cool, fish are killing it! Flamingo /Key Largo area

It’s cool, then warms up to 80, the snowbirds love it! The fish also respond pretty good to it, Trout fishing is great in the channels and deeper flats. On last Sunday Kevin Lance and his son Dillon caught 70 trout in 1 1/2 hours in a Key Largo Trip, Dillon also had 5 Barracudas up to 10 lbs. Dillon had never caught a fish before and was very excited.

I also fished with 3 other teenagers on Wednesday part of a 2-boat trip. Jacob, Chase and Dawson. 2 of the 3 had fished before and Dawson had not ever fished. It started with casting lessons once we got thru that, the fish started to get caught. Chase had the hot hand all day, he caught Snook, Trout, Redfish, Tripletail, Jacks and Ladyfish. The other 2 caught plenty of fish also, but Chase was hot!

I fished with long time customer Mike and his wife Martha out at Holiday Park. Mike always tells me if it gets hot let me know because he lives close. I let him know and we met out there at 1:30 pm. They started catching

6 PM. They caught way over 100 Bass, no big ones but it was a day of catching!

I’ve done a little of everything, including a couple days offshore the past week in Key Largo.

Its the busy time of year and just glad to be busy.

Warm Water and High Winds,

Caught Em Good!

The last couple weeks have been busy, I’m really thankful the fish bit most of the trips. It was mostly family trips, some of the other trips didn’t send me pics. I fished Flamingo, which is inside of Everglades National Park the last 2 weeks. The wind really beat us up on most of the trips but look at pictures below. You can see we caught fish every day, somedays it was work and others it just fun. The wind kind of dictated where we fished, only fished out front in Fl. Bay once since last report! It really doesn’t make a difference to customers they just want to

catch fish.

The next 2 months are some of the best times to fish Flamingo. Tarpon and Snook should be out in the Gulf of America as well as the flats out front of Flamingo. The Redfish bite has been really good in the backcountry as well as the Goliath Groupers. The number of species being caught every day is awesome with a total of 15 species in a 2-day trip.

One of these days the winds will calm down and we will have some awesome fishing without fighting the wind. The fish ate and assortment of NLBN lures Rapala “Twitch n Rap” and Live Shrimp.

Its the busy time of year and just glad to be busy. If you would like to fish Flamingo, Key Largo or Biscayne Bay give me a call. If you have kids that like to fish, bring them. Fishing is only going to get better in next couple months.

It’s
fish right away and that lasted until
In the end, Tania took the fishing crown:
1. First fish – Yellowtail snapper
2. Most fish – Countless snapper and other reef species
3. Biggest fish – The barracuda

9.1 on the CHATTERBAIT! First thing Captain Gains told his client this morning was, “If you want a big one, throw the chatterbait. Both large and small drum are active inshore, especially on the flats and near oyster bars. They’ll bite on live bait and larger pieces of crab—perfect for anglers looking for a strong, steady fight. Bigger drum are found around the bridges on cut crabs for the most part. HubbardsMarina.com

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. To get more information or to schedule an inspection, contact Howard Bush at (305)731-3580. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Contact Flotilla Commander Howard Bush for more information at (305)731-3580.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART -

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps.org.

Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. The cost for materials is $40 for the first member of a family and $10 each per additional family member. For more information, please call C. William Myers, Public Education, Flotilla 82, at 941-388-1033. Mention you saw this announcement in the Florida Mariner, and receive 20% off!

Do You Offer On-Water Training to Boaters? BoatUS Foundation Wants to Help You Train

More - Boating safety nonprofit seeks to grow hands-on training experience with new On-Water

Training Locator

Boaterwise, which offers on-water instruction on Lake Texoma, Texas, is one of nearly 20 training companies that list with the BoatUS Foundation On-Water Training Locator, helping to connect the company to boaters seeking behind-the-helm experience.

SPRINGFIELD, Va., April 2, 2025 – The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water knows that on-water training can help reduce accidents and injuries, improve confidence behind the helm and help boaters get more out of the boating lifestyle. To make it easier for boaters to find boat-handling instruction as well as grow providers of behind-the-helm training, the Foundation is inviting on-water training schools, including local boat training companies, nonprofits, associations, clubs, individual captains or anyone offering boating instruction, to be included in its new online BoatUS On-Water Training Locator.

Building upon its long-standing free online boating safety course for 37 states as well as its On-Water Training Program started in 2019, the new BoatUS OnWater Training Locator supports the nonprofit’s goal of educational outreach directly to boaters.

To support the program, a listing on the On-Water Training Locator is $99 per month and includes links to training providers’ websites and course offerings. In exchange, the Foundation markets the locator to the more than 725,000 BoatUS members, the Foundation’s 200,000-plus annual state certification course takers and the public.

“We’ve found that once boaters take our staterecognized NASBLA-approved course, some wish for more practical boat handling training, and there’s no better way than an on-water training course taught in a supportive environment with a U.S. Coast Guardlicensed instructor,” said BoatUS Foundation Education Program Manager, Alan Dennison. “Our new locator connects boaters to local training opportunities, whether they simply want to try out boating for the first time or they’re more seasoned operators looking to improve docking skills, open-water handling or other areas for improvement.

“For the businesses, organizations and captains offering on-water instruction, a listing on the locator can help

them increase their marketing reach and grow revenue,” added Dennison.

Curriculum offered by educators listed on the BoatUS On-Water Training Locator include a range of course offerings. These include the four levels of the National Safe Boating Council modular curriculum for beginner to experienced boaters, as well as potential offerings from US Powerboating, Recreational PowerBoating Association, American Boating, American Sailing Association and US Sailing. Additional course offerings may include women only courses, courses on navigation, and multiday powerboat and sail cruising, and other boating skills development including customized oneon-one instruction.
