– By the time Maine Maritime College student Mike Blunt had become the youngest towing captain employed at a recreational boat towing company in his home town of San Diego in 1998, he had already worked on a fuel dock, held jobs in the sportfishing fleet, and was a certified rescue diver. That’s when, he says, he cultivated his passion for the sea and set a goal: By age 50, he wanted to own his own recreational marine boat towing business.

After a false start or two, he’s now gotten his dream job as the new owner of TowBoatUS Sarasota and TowBoatUS Manatee River, Florida, two of more than 300 TowBoatUS locations across the country that provide on-water towing, ungrounding, battery jump and fuel drop-off services to recreational boaters 24/7. All TowBoatUS companies are locally owned and operated.

Soon after the fateful summer job and while still in college, Capt. Blunt made his first attempt at purchasing a local TowBoatUS company on the California coast, but funding proved to be elusive. He later moved to the Tampa region and for the last 19 years has been

working in the maritime shipping industry. Three years ago he came close to purchasing another red-boat location, but the sellers had a lastminute change of plan. Other prospects also didn’t pan out – until now.

“I’m so excited to have my own TowBoatUS territory!” said Blunt. “I love being able to help boaters and make their day better.” The company’s dispatcher, Ray Sickles, who, for more than 21 years, has helped boaters get the on water help they need, remains with the business.

Pan-Grilled Red Snapper with AvocadoStrawberry Salsa

Ingredients

4 (6-ounce) Florida red snapper fillets

1 ripe Florida avocado, diced

2 cups Florida strawberries, finely chopped

1 jalapeño pepper, finely chopped

¼ cup red onion, finely chopped

2 tablespoons cilantro, finely chopped

1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

1 ½ tablespoons fresh lime zest

¼ teaspoon Florida sugar

1 tablespoon olive oil

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Directions:

Stir jalapeño, avocado, strawberries, onion, cilantro, lime juice, sugar and sea salt together in a bowl. Cover and set aside. Salsa may be made several hours ahead and chilled. When making ahead, add the sugar, salt and avocado when ready to serve.

Preheat stovetop grill pan over high heat. Pat fillets dry then brush both sides with the oil; sprinkle with the lime zest, salt and pepper. Lay fillets on grill pan skin side down and cook 4-5 minutes on each side, turning once, until cooked through.

Transfer fillets skin side up to individual serving plates. Carefully remove skin; top with avocadostrawberry salsa.

Brunswick Corporation Names John Buelow President - Mercury Marine

INSHORE REPORT

Right now, the sheepshead bite is going well in shore we’re seeing a lot of sheepsheads around our docks Piers bridges and jetties. The sheepshead are super active biting small pieces of shrimp, clams, oysters, barnacles, and even fiddler crabs. Barnacles are a great option for those sheepsheads especially if you it to a dock early and scrape some barnacles off the pilings you can get those sheepsheads chummed up and feed and actively before you drop down a Barnacle in front of them. Light tackle and minimum weight is a great option when targeting those sheepshead typically we target them similarly to how we would target hog fish near shore. Except for those sheep’s that are even a little leader shy and can be a little bit finicky especially if you can see them and they can see you.

Trout action is going well in the Back Bay area especially in areas of shallower grass flats especially the edges potholes are cuts you can find those trout stacked up and ready to ambush passing crustaceans soft plastics are so moving lures. Trout are typically in small groups so when you find one feeding trout typically there’s going to be closer by as well. Trout have a softer mouth, so you must use a little slower action rod with a little softer tip when targeting those trout slow moving soft plastics are a great option, but live shrimp free lined out there on the flats has been working well too. We’re seeing some of those trout around our dock lights and bridge lights at night as well but this time of year when the water is cooler, the action is during the day on the flats whereas the summertime those dock lights and bridge lights become more common for bigger concentrations of the speckled trout.

Snook action is going well on the Back Bay waters especially on these little warming periods we see a lot of those snook really get active and pour out of the Back Bay waters where we see them really get tucked up in the creek’s rivers and bayous when that water temperature drops, and the cold fronts are around. This weekend’s cold front should push some of those snook back to the creek’s rivers and bayous but it’s not a very strong front and won’t last very long so it really won’t have a huge impact on the movements of the snook. Behind that front this upcoming work week and through the upcoming weekend we see a big warming trend and that big warming trend if it holds true and no cold fronts interrupt after this weekend we should see those snooks start to pull out of the creeks rivers and bayous and pretty good numbers and concentrations as they have been and they start to get more into that springtime pattern perhaps as we move into the coming week and weekend.

A lot of those Schooley sized snook are active around our mangrove shorelines residential dock lines and canals as you move from the upper Bay and Back Bay waters out closer towards

the passes. Snook candy finicky especially when you see those snook up on the surface they can be real leaders shy spooky and slow to feed but if you’re using the right size tackle and the right approach sometimes you can trick them into feeding or just wait for the right time around those solunar major or minor tides.

Redfish action is going well as well through the area mostly on our residential dock lines is kind of the hotspot for the redfish right now. However, as waters continue to warm those red fish will pull out of the canals and off the dock lines and spread out more along our mangrove shorelines grass flats and local area oyster bars. Redfish are really keyed into those crustaceans when the water temperatures are cool but as it warms up and more bait appears this spring, we’ll see more of those redfish start switching over to that white bait bite. As we move into spring it gets a little bit trickier because they get more keyed into those smaller white baits and the fry baits in it can be a little bit more of a tricky approach as those fish are looking for smaller baits.

Black drum are really schooled up right now we’re seeing a lot of black drum and big numbers and big concentrations around some local area bridges. We’re also seeing those schools move through our passes and along our beaches too. Black drum can be a little tricky to spot unless you’re watching your bottom machine and know what you’re looking for. Or find a hotbed around certain area bridges like the Terra Verde bridge the Gandy bridge, dick Meisner bridge and other area bridges that are known to concentrate those black drum. Black drum love large live shrimp or dead shrimp on the bottom and even cut crabs they’re more focused on those crustaceans right on or just above the bottom. However, you can sometimes get them fooled into biting those slowmoving soft plastics that are right on or just above the bottom as well.

Out on the beaches we’re seeing a lot of those silver trout and Whiting right now silver trout and Whiting are active along our beaches this time of year. When the water calms down and clears up and we get those pockets of cleaner clearer water the Pompano tend to be active as well. Fishing around the surf with live shrimp on the bottom you’ve got a good option for the Whiting and silver trout while the water is cooler as it warms up the silver trout will disappear, but the whitening will persist through the summertime.

NEARSHORE REPORT

Hogfish action is going really well in nearshore right now we’re seeing those hogfish really active on our fivehour half day 10 hour all day and nearshore

private fishing charters we typically catch a majority of our hogfish using live shrimp on three different rig setups either

the knocker rig, the naked ball jigs, or those banana jigs that we carry in our shop. Hogfish are mostly hanging around about 30 to 70 foot of water in the best public trip to target them would be a 10 hour all day but a private charter gives you plenty of time and really a plenty of availability to really dial in on those hogfish even more so a private charter would be the best way but a 10 hour would be second best if you don’t have the private charter budget. If you got your own boat focus around 30 to 70 foot of water lower relief smaller relief areas of flat hard bottom or even shell using live shrimp and lighter tackle with minimal weight to target those hogfish. Remember hogfish bite best in the cooler months and we see them most often around anywhere from October through about April into may depending on weather.

Lane snapper action is going really well around the area we’re seeing lane snapper about anywhere from 50 to about 100 feet of water but the bigger the lane snapper the deeper we go typically. Lane snapper really like live shrimp, but they’ll bite virtually anything from the cut squid to the thread fins in everything in between.

Mangrove snapper action is going pretty good near shore mostly in the deepest near shore waters is the best area to find the mangrove snapper on cut thread fins small chunks of thread fins with double snow rigs are great option to target those mangrove snappers. But we also see a lot of the mangroves while targeting the hogfish using live shrimp on a recent 10 hour all day yesterday, we caught over 50 keeper mangrove snappers while targeting hogfish and smashing plentiful lanes.

OFFSHORE REPORT

Offshore the weather has been treacherous lately making it difficult to make it offshore with any consistency but when we do make it offshore the red grouper bite has been super good to us. We’re seeing a lot of those nice red grouper offshore right now up to about 120 foot of water we’re seeing a couple of the scamp grouper some big mangrove snapper, solid Vermillion, porgies, almacos and much more great opportunity to make it offshore if the weather will allow and every opportunity, we get to make it out there the fishing has been pretty good to us. We’re hoping the weather will start laying down we start getting into that time of year where the cold fronts relent a bit then we just have to worry about the wind.

So very focused in the coming month on the red grouper mangroves Vermilion ANS scamp and other bottom fish but you have a chance for those blackfin tuna this time of year maybe a wahoo in those early season kingfish won’t be far away either.

I Can’t Believe It!

Can’t believe we are already in midFebruary. Winter and spring are my favorite times of year to fish in South Florida. Winter is my favorite season for sailfish and it’s almost half gone already. There is nothing like waking up in the morning, the day after a cold front arrives and there is a brisk North wind blowing. The whole ride to the marina I’m hoping there is north current and blue water to go along with the North wind. Even after 30 years of chasing sailfish around I still get excited about a good day of kite fishing for sailfish. We have been lucky to get quite a few cold fronts this year. Sometimes there has been blue water and N current to go along with the fronts and sometimes there hasn’t. Even with that, I can honestly say this has been the best January for sailfish that we have had in at least the past 5 years. We have caught 5 times more sailfish this January than last January. We still haven’t broken double digits though this year. Our best was 9 sailfish releases in one day but in that

week alone we caught 30 sailfish in 5 trips. That’s pretty good and consistent.

Besides sailfish, there have been a handful of other species caught. We had an epic month for big blackfin tunas. That has slowed down a little bit, but it’s not uncommon to still catch one or two big blackfins. Our best catch this past week was a decent size wahoo. The wahoo ate a kite bait and as everyone knows, wahoo’s teeth are like razors. We hooked the fish on a fluorocarbon leader without a wire trace. We got so lucky that the circle hook was placed perfectly in the jaw. The customer did a great job of staying tight and we were able to get her onboard. It’s one thing to catch wahoo high speed trolling, but when you hook one on light tackle 20 lb. gear, it is truly amazing. These fish swim so fast and change directions instantly. It’s like they are not even hooked. Although we have caught plenty of wahoo throughout the years, each one is still awesome.

The month of March, and sometimes even into April, can be the windiest time of year in the Florida Keys. If you want quality fishing, go with an open mind and listen to your captain’s recommendations for what your best target species is.

Both the Atlantic and the Gulf waters have quality fisheries happening but, again, the wind will dictate which direction you can go.

In the Atlantic waters, we have plenty of pelagics, including blackfin tuna, kingfish and some big cobia. But the star attraction is the abundance of sailfish. March and April will be prime time to target sails, but take your iron stomach with you because conditions can be quite sporty.

In the Gulf and Florida Bay venues, we’ve seen some of the best fishing in ten years, with loads of Florida pompano, cobia and large kings. Goliath groupers and sharks keep the game interesting.

On the deep side of the reef in 150 to 250 feet of water, there are good numbers of blackfin tuna in the 10- to 20-pound class plus king mackerel and a more common occurrence of dolphin as well as sailfish. Live baits are key with live pilchards providing the most consistent action. Live ballyhoo, if you can find them, also work well. Cigar minnows and sardines will also put fish in the box.

Moving inshore to the wrecks, March

is typically very good for mutton snappers, kingfish and very large amberjacks.

The amberjacks are beginning their spawn this month, and it’s now that we catch some of the biggest ones of the year. Fish in the 60- to 80-pound class are not unusual, with plenty of 20- to 40-pounders to wear you out.

The best baits to attract the attention of the AJs are bluerunners, grunts and large pilchards. Jigging also produces excellent results.

For the muttons and kings, live pinfish, pilchards or ballyhoo all work, fished down near the bottom.

On the reef, the yellowtail action picks up tempo at this point in the spring. With the warming waters, the fish become more active and need to feed more, which makes it a bit easier to coerce them into taking your bait. Using plenty of chum is important. SnapperUp or Mojo Oats will bring them in right behind your boat.

All you need for successful yellowtail catching are 15-lb fluoro leaders and small hooks, such as the Owner #4 Mutu Light hooks we use.

The reef edge will have good numbers of king and cero mackerel. And, of course, plenty of grouper that must be released as the season is closed until

One fishery I was not able to get in on this past month was swordfishing, and that was as shame as there were finally some big swordfish being caught. Biggest I heard was 429 pounds and a few others in the low 400’s as well. Even a big bluefin tuna was caught while deep dropping for swordfish. Hopefully when we get out there again, the big girls will still be around.

With February half done, it is really the time to book your winter sailfish trips. Let’s go out there and see what we can catch and hopefully find that blue water and current right after a cold front and rack up

In Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, there are loads of cobia, large king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and mangrove snappers. Pinfish is the go-to bait for all but the kings, which love small bluerunners fished either under a balloon or, preferably, hanging from a kite. We use #7 wire, as these kings are quite large and can bite through smaller wire. For everything else in the bay and gulf, it’s all about pinfish on a jighead.

You’ll most likely catch some Goliath grouper. Be sure to release them quickly and unharmed as they are protected.

March is a good time of year to target sharks around the flats and banks. It’s primarily blacktips, spinners, bulls and a few hammerheads to start but, as we get toward the end of the month and the waters warm up, we begin to see more lemons.

Any kind of fresh dead bait or live bait works, such as jacks, bluerunners, ladyfish and the like. Be sure to use circle hooks. We always use Owner 9/0 SSW circles for fishing for all shark species, with #7 to #8 wire and 20-lb class tackle rounding out your setup.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other life-saving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! Classes are $50 per student and include books, supplemental materials, and course completion certificates. The next classes begin in January and continue monthly. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
