3 dozen Florida oysters, shucked on the half shell

2 cups Florida spinach, cooked & squeezed dry

1 Florida bell pepper (any color), diced small

3-4 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled

1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

1/2 cup Panko bread crumbs

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped fine

1 teaspoon of hot pepper sauce

1 lemon, juiced

2 lemons, quartered for garnish

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Directions:

Preheat oven to high broil.

In a bowl combine and mix together the spinach, bell pepper, bacon, cheeses, parsley, hot sauce and lemon juice. Taste and adjust with salt and pepper, if needed.

Place one tablespoon or so of the spinach mixture on top of each oyster. Place on a sheet pan and put under the broiler for two or three minutes. The cooking process will happen rather quickly, so observe the whole time.

National Safe Boating Week will be held from May 20-26, 2023, reminding all boaters to brush up on boating safety skills and prepare for the boating season. This observance week is the annual kick-off of the Safe Boating Campaign, a global awareness effort that encourages boaters to make the most of their boating adventure by being responsible.

“The best boating experience is safe boating,” said Yvonne Pentz, communications director of the National Safe Boating Council, a nonprofit dedicated to helping create a safe boating experience for all boaters and the lead organization of the Safe Boating Campaign. “Have fun on the water, make memories with your family and friends – all while boating responsibly.”

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2021, and that 83 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

There are many options for boaters when it comes to choosing a life jacket. When selecting a life jacket, a boater should check that it is U.S. Coast Guard approved, appropriate for the water activity, and fits properly.

“Remember, the best life jacket is the one you will wear,” said Pentz. “Whether you’re going fishing or just enjoying a ride on the boat, boat like a pro and make sure you’re prepared for the adventure.”

• Take a boating safety course. Gain valuable knowledge and on-water experience in a boating safety course with many options for novice to experienced boaters.

• Check equipment. Schedule a free vessel safety check with local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons to make sure all essential equipment is present, working and in good condition.

• Make a float plan. Always let someone on shore know the trip itinerary, including operator and passenger information, boat type and registration, and communication equipment on board.

• Wear a life jacket. Make sure everyone wears a life jacket – every time. A stowed life jacket is no use in an emergency.

• Use an engine cut-off device – it’s the law. An engine cut-off device, or engine cut-off switch, is a proven safety device to stop the boat’s engine should the operator unexpectedly fall overboard.

• Watch the weather. Always check the forecast before departing on the water and frequently during the excursion.

• Know what’s going on around you at all times. Nearly a quarter of all reported boating accidents in 2021 were caused by operator inattention or improper lookout.

• Know where you’re going and travel at safe speeds. Be familiar with the area, local boating speed zones and always travel at a safe speed.

• Never boat under the influence. A BUI is involved in one-third of all recreational boating fatalities. Always designate a sober skipper.

• Keep in touch.Have more than one communication device that works when wet. VHF radios, emergency locator beacons, satellite phones, and cell phones can all be important devices in an emergency.

Mercury Marine Achieves Electrification Milestone as First Avator™ Electric Outboards Now Shipping to Global Customers

Boston Whaler and Guy Harvey Foundation Host Teacher Appreciation Event

EDGEWATER, Fla – April 27, 2023 – Boston Whaler recently hosted a group of 20 science teachers from Volusia and Flagler counties to celebrate the completion of the Guy Harvey Foundation workshop, recognizing their commitment to positively impact the next generation through marine science and conservation education.

Queen of Tampa Bay Flats (Cobia)

Cobia (Ling) Rachycentron canadum or just cobia is a familiar sight in Tampa Bay all summer into late or mid October according to water temperature. In Tampa Bay they range in size from 30 inches in the flats to 48 inches around the flats,structure, and wrecks. Cobia must be at least 36 inches long from the fork of the tail to be legal.Daily Bag Limit 1 per day or 2 per vesselwhichever is less. They are also known as Ling, Crab Eaters and Lemonfish. Common from 10 to 50 pounds in the Gulf but Tampa Bay more in the 10 to 25 pounds.

Baits: Greenback sardines, threadfin sardines, blue crabs, grunts and pinfish are the baits of choice. I find an area of grass flats close to a channel or drop off. I prefer the water depth around 2 to 4 feet. I then start by chumming for the bait with a mixture of tropical fish food, Anise oil and some salt water mixed to a cream of wheat texture. The secret to chumming is not to feed the bait but attracting them to the boat. I prefer to use Humpback Flats net 1-pound per foot this make life a lot easier when you have those days it takes 20 or 30 throws to get enough bait for a days fishing. I start the season with a 10-foot 1/4-inch mesh bait net when the bait gets bigger or throwing under a bridge or range marker, I switch to a 3/8-inch mesh it sinks quicker increases your chance of catching more of the bigger baits.

Keeping the bait alive:

A live well is a must to have on any boat, and if you don’t have one, portable units can be purchased at most retail tackle outlet stores.

A good live well needs to be at

least 26 gallons or bigger with a 700 gallon an hour pumps the larger the better. Most boats come equip with a live well system from the factory or are ready to be plumb for one. Unless you are a handy man type I suggest you find a local shop to install itmost applications require making a hole through your hull to install a pickup tube not something I am inclined to do myself.

Cobia on the flats: Ok, now we caught our baits, but what are we to do next? That’s simple: start cutting somebait (greenback sardine) in half and make a large pile on the cutting board. Start by tossing pieces in the water around the boat remember you are anchored in 3 to 4-foot of water now just wait for rays to start showing up. Southern rays or brown rays are attracted to you chumming and with them come the cobias. Remember, cobia like structure and are lazy to feed, but as the rays move in on the scent of the chum with them come the cobia. Rays stir the bottom up with their wings to feed and this brings up all the small shrimps and crabs and pieces of chum to the surface of the flats.

The cobia will be just under the rays or next to them picking the pieces of bait the rays leave behind. Toss a live pinfish, greenback, shrimp, or crab at them and hold on. A word of caution: leave the bail open on the reel until the cobia get at least 20feet from before you set the hook, or they will head for the nearest structure which is your boat. I have several broken rods at home to remind me of this costly mistake.

Buoy tending:

The first thing that comes to mind when someone says cobia fishing in Tampa Bay is buoy tending; the ritual of running from one buoy (channel markers-range markers) to another looking for cobia hanging around them during the slack tide periods. Cobia is a structure-oriented fish that like wrecks, buoys and anything that creates a shadow line. Buoy tending is a method that works but is expensive on the pocketbook with gas prices so high. The term early bird gets the worm applies in this case, the first anglers to the buoys have the best shot at catching them.

Method:

Approach up current from the marker with live bait ready to go when cobia is sighted toss up current allowing the bait to drift towards the fish rather than throwing the bait on top and spooking it. I use a large float such as a 4-Horsemen with 3-feet of 50-pound test fluorocarbon leader and a 3/0 circle hook. Cobia can be picky eaters and some cases refuse your offer, don’t waste time run to the next buoy or range marker and start all over again.

Tackle:

Flats I prefer a medium action spinning outfit with 20-pound test braided line, 40- pound fluorocarbon leader and 3/0 circle hook. Buoys a heavier outfit is need either a large spinning outfit with 40 pound test braided line and 50 pound test fluorocarbon leader again 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook.

Tarpon fishing will take off during May as migratory fish arrive along our beaches. Also look for Spanish mackerel, tripletail, cobia and false albacore (little tunny) in the coastal gulf. Snook will move into passes and the surf and reds and trout should feed heavily on shallow flats as baitfish become more plentiful. Trout, blues, Spanish mackerel and more should be good options on deep grass flats.

Resident tarpon are usually the first to show up as they make their way out of rivers and creeks. As migratory tarpon start to arrive this month, we should have schools of tarpon moving both north and south along our beaches. Early arriving tarpon may be more aggressive due to less fishing pressure early in the season. Set up in their line of travel and wait for tarpon schools to move past and cast a DOA Baitbuster, a 4” CAL Shad, a live crab or pinfish to them. Once you’ve seen the first school of fish, you can concentrate your efforts in that “lane” since other schools should be following the same route. When they aren’t showing well on the surface, a live bait under a float in their travel lane may score. I’ve also done well blind casting a DOA Baitbuster or Swimming Mullet when there wasn’t much showing on the surface. Be quiet and using your electric trolling motor sparingly. Even though your 4-stroke outboard sounds quiet, it is no substitute for an electric trolling motor. Give other anglers at least several hundred yards of space and keep in mind that fish can be moving either north or south so setting up too close to another angler may affect their flow of fish.

Fly anglers should do well with a variety of baitfish or crab fly patterns fished on floating or intermediate sink tip fly lines. Staking out or anchoring in shallow water on their travel route should result in some shots at fish. The best angle is a “head on” shot, followed by a quartering shot. A perpendicular shot may work if it’s timed perfectly, although casting too far beyond their line of travel will usually spook them. I use a push pole with an occasional assist from a trolling motor if I need to adjust my

Regulations have returned to normal for reds and snook in Sarasota. Spotted Seatrout have changed in southwest Florida to a 3 fish per person, bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15”-19” with one allowed per vessel over 19”. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. Snook will be spawning this month so use tackle heavy enough to catch and release them in a timely manner and handle them gently. Larger snook will mostly be females and should always be supported horizontally rather than hung vertically by the jaw. You’ll find them in passes and in the surf. They will also stage around docks and bridges close to passes. Casting CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms or DOA shrimp around docks and bridges close to passes should be effective. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, work well at night. One of the most fun ways to target snook is to walk the beach and cast CAL jigs, DOA Shrimp or flies to them in the surf.

Higher tides this month will mean that reds will spend more time feeding on shallow flats. Look for them along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high and in potholes or along sandbars when the tide is low. When fishing shallow water for reds, be as quiet as possible. I prefer to use a push pole or wade. Reds are one of the most challenging species to catch on a fly. Since they can be very spooky, I often wade for them when fly fishing to keep a lower profile.

You’ll also find big trout in many of the same shallow areas that you find reds. They will be plentiful on deep grass flats. I prefer to cast CAL jigs and flies on sink tip fly lines for trout. A DOA Deadly Combo also works very well. Drifting and casting ahead of the drift is usually the most productive method. Look

for flats that have a good mix of grass and sand and good tidal flow. You may find pompano, bluefish and Spanish mackerel on the same deep grass flats where trout are plentiful. They can be targeted in the same way as trout, but you may need to use wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader when toothy fish are around. You may also find Spanish and king mackerel, little tunny, cobia and tripletail in the coastal gulf. Keep your eyes open for surface activity such as diving birds, breaking fish or baitfish being forced out of the water which could indicate the presence of mackerel, blues or little tunny. Medium spinning tackle and 8 or 9-weight fly tackle should be heavy enough, although your tarpon spinning and fly tackle is not too heavy for cobia. Look for cobia either swimming on the surface or around navigational markers or buoys. I have also found cobia swimming with schools of tarpon before. Tripletail may be found around crab trap floats or buoys, where they can be targeted with a DOA shrimp or CAL jig on spinning tackle. When fly fishing for tripletail, a floating line on an 8 or 9-weight fly rod with a shrimp or baitfish fly pattern, like my Grassett Flats Minnow, should get the job done.

This is one of my favorite months of the year. If battling a big tarpon isn’t for you, you should have plenty to do on both shallow and deep grass flats or in the coastal gulf. I’ll be spending my time targeting tarpon in the coastal gulf unless conditions won’t allow it. There is something about casting a fly to a giant fish in shallow water! Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

The Joy of Fishing: Even Without the Big Catch - Tania and I woke up a bit late on Saturday, 5:45am, to go fishing. I usually wake up at 5:30am and we try to leave the house by 6:00am; however, Tania was exhausted from her long week at work so I let her sleep in a few extra minutes. I felt a little rushed as I hate being behind schedule but I sucked it up for Tania!

Once again, we had trouble finding shrimp, but DeBrooks Fishing Corner was able to scrounge up four dozen. While the one guy was trying to get me as much bait as he could, I got to chat with Lily, Captain Jason Muller’s daughter. She mated for us on our first outing with Captain Jason Muller of Muller Maritime Services Fishing Charters. She asked how Tania was doing while I asked how her dad was doing.

We made it to the dock about 6:45am and had to wait in line as we were about fourth in line to get our boat. I was grateful we had to wait as I was able to change the boat from a bay boat to the Cobia 220 so we could go offshore. While we waited, I texted War Daddy Baits to see if he had any extra bait I could pick up since I did not reserve any, and we were fortunate enough to be able to get some.

We left the marina about 7:10am and made our way to the bait boat. We picked up $20 worth of pilchards/greenies, and headed out the inlet. We arrived at the boils about 7:30am. The water was a bit rougher than we had expected so I had to go a little slower than we normally would have run. Once again this was a good thing as I burned less gas, it just took us a little bit longer to arrive.

Once we got close to the boils the sun was higher in the sky and we could see the water was dirty.

I was a bit disappointed as I knew this meant we would not catch any Pompano or Permit; however, we made

the run so we were going to see what we could catch. Before we pulled up to our first spot to drift, we passed our friends from the boat club who beat us out and had already started drifting. They signaled the bite was slow.

Tania was the first to drop her jig as I set up a free line for the pilchards. Once I was set up, I let the bait free line out the back of the boat and I started jigging also. It didn’t take long for Tania to hook up with her first fish. It was a Blue Runner. Not what we were hoping for but with the dirty water it was expected.

What we found during the first drift was the drift was going north east, and the fish were biting just south of the boils where the water turned muddy color. With that being said our drifts would be short. Also, since I did not get a bite on the live line, I decided to put a 2oz sinker on the line making a knocker rig and put the pilchard on the bottom.

Shortly after we started our second drift the pilchard on the bottom got hit hard and I had a fight on my hands. We wound up all the other rods as I fought whatever took the bait. It only took a few minutes to get the fish to the boat and for me to realize it was a decent size Jack Crevalle. I decided to keep the Jack to make fish dip so in the cooler this one went after I bleed out. Once I got the fish on ice, we repositioned for a third drift.

Because Tania had a long week and was tired, combined with the knowledge of afternoon storms, we decided we would head back in about 11:00am. From 7:30am to 11:00am the bite was slow but consistent. We lost track of the Blue Runners and Ladyfish we caught, and we had three Jack Crevalle in the cooler. Just before 11:00am the pilchard rod went. I started fighting the fish, but it was pulling line out pretty quick and I couldn’t get it to turn, so I rushed Tania to get all the lines on board as I was about to chase the fish down. I was pretty sure it was a shark, but I didn’t want

It has been an extremely warm winter in the Keys, which has sped up the normal progression of fishing opportunities. With some minor adjustments, you should still find the best fishing of the year during May. Three main areas of focus this time of year are offshore for dolphin, reef and wreck areas for snappers and groupers and the Middle Keys bridges for tarpon.

get your biggest flag yellowtail, with fish upward of six pounds and more hitting the docks on a regular basis. The deeper areas in 60 to 100 feet are most consistent for the flags.

to lose all my line. Shortly after Tania took control of the rod the fish stopped fighting. Once we got it to the boat, we found out what had happened. I had a pretty good snook on, but unfortunately the tax man said I owed him, so all I got was the head. Tania felt bad as if it was her fault, we lost the Snook to the shark because she was holding the rod when it happened. I felt bad also but I knew it was no one’s fault. But if it anyone was to blame it would be me, as I could not get the snook to turn for me and get him in quicker.

We were getting ready to head in when we drifted past the yellow buoy and Tania spotted a snook near the surface. We spent 30 minutes live lining a pilchard near it but it would not take the bait! I am guessing it was spooked as I am sure it knew we were there not to mention there were definitely some sharks around.

At some point while we were drifting our buddy Perry showed up. Since we were heading in, I came up next to him to offer him the left-over bait we had. I gave him probably six pilchards and a dozen shrimp. He was pretty happy as the live well they had lost the cap on the drain tube and they lost most of their shrimp as the shrimp went down the tube. I gave him my small bait net and told him to put it over the opening so he didn’t lose any of the baits I gave him.

We made it back to the docks about 12:30pm. All in all, it was a beautiful day on the water. The wind kicked up as we headed in but that was to be expected with the storms approaching. Tania and I pray all who made it out over the weekend had blessed and fruitful trips and made it home safely. We pray all who head out this week have tight lines and good times!

Offshore, the dolphin (mahi mahi) bite kicks into gear steadily at this point. You can expect larger fish this month, with the smaller schoolies arriving in June. Now is the time for the gaffers and slammers. Look for weed lines or birds, especially frigates, working the water surface to indicate the presence of the dolphin. The usual assortment of lures and rigged ballyhoo do the trick. However, in order to fool the biggest dolphin, you will need to have live baits on hand just in case a pitched ballyhoo doesn’t work. These live baits include pinfish and small bluerunners.

While you’re fishing around floating hard objects, be on the lookout for wahoo. Run a high speed plug around those objects to catch the attention of any lurking wahoo.

On the reef areas, the yellowtail have already been spawning, and the mangroves are beginning to move in among the yellowtails to prepare for their spawn.

You may also find mangrove snapper mixed in. These are forming their annual congregation on the reef, and most are large, mature fish in the four- to sevenpound category.

The main event on the reef is the opening of grouper season. Before you set out in search of the groupers, check the regulations as they may have changed.

Black grouper is typically the primary target for anglers on the reef. They’re found in the same areas we fish for yellowtail snapper, which are beginning their spawn. Of the three primary grouper varieties, blacks are probably the toughest, so heavy tackle is necessary to land them.

The grouper are big so, naturally, the baits are big. Grunts, bluerunners with their tails trimmed and legalsize snappers, preferably 12- to 14-inch yellowtails. These baits usually don’t last long when dropped to the bottom in 50 to 70 feet of water.

The Atlantic wrecks also hold large black grouper plus gags at 20-plus pounds and good size reds

Also on the wrecks, mixed in with the groupers, are lots of mutton snapper, amberjack, African pompano and, as mentioned above, grouper. Pinfish, pilchards or live ballyhoo are the preferred baits for all but the grouper. And, we’re still catching permit up to 30 pounds on the artificial reefs. Use small crabs on a jighead.

Last but not least is the king of spring, the tarpon. The tarpon run has been fastpaced since the end of March, and it will only improve until it peaks during May. On an average four-hour outing, you’ll see a couple hundred tarpon rolling, and the chances of landing the fish of a lifetime are very good.

In the Marathon area, we have the Long Key Bridge, the Seven Mile Bridge and Bahia Honda Bridge. The preferred baits vary bridge-to-bridge, with mullet and pinfish the choice at Long Key and Seven Mile, while Bahia Honda is all about crabs. Talk to your local tackle shop to see what the tarpon are biting best and what rigs to use.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. 2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom –the students can be anywhere in Florida! their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/ license.
