To make matters worse, the Philippine government hasn’t taken any prominent actions or even plans to address this alarming issue. But what do you expect from a government that has been turned into a family business?
We have barely three years left. If nothing is done within those years, then we are doomed. Last April, more than a thou sand scientists from across the globe went to the streets to demand immedi ate action against the urgently escalat ing climate crisis. The protest occurred after the United Nations Intergov ernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report stating that humankind had just three years to curb greenhouse gas emissions to prevent catastrophic climate repercussions. According to the IPCC, humans are responsible for approximately all the greenhouse gas increases in the atmosphere during the last 150 years. Our actions are suffocating and ultimately killing the planet. The production of energy, transportation, agriculture, and industrial activities that enable us to survive are also the causes of our graves. There is a thin line between innovation and destruction. Still, self-centered individuals’ insatiable desires for power and wealth cross the line of devastation—profit and convenience in exchange for everything else. The time is ticking. Every sec ond is crucial. Three years is a short period. By the year 2025, our fates are sealed if actions are not taken today. When the scientists’ protest becomes trending on various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, it alarms the Filipinos.
Protest for Our Future by Angeline Sunga
Massive postings about how to take care of our planet can be seen. Search engines like Ecosia and deleting emails are dominating our newsfeed. More than that, governments and industries are being called to action and account ability. But after some time, when news about the protest is no longer trending, most of these have also disappeared. It is a wonder how many people return to Google, or are they still even deleting their irrelevant emails? Who truly cares for our planet, and is there just for clout?

Moreover, industries continue to thrive for the sole purpose of maximizing profits without regard for the future they are destroying. Their money is increasing as the earth is warming. If we want to rescue our planet and have a future, we must initiate the change ourselves. We must become thinking and responsible citizens of our nation. The true power is in our hands. It is on us to protect the world that we live in. With those three years that we have, we must show them that the power they have is just from us.

BulSU Selects MEE for its Limited Face-to-Face Classes by Sir Shanen De Guzman
“I learned how to operate mechatronics equipment such as the Mechatronics Standards System (MSS), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), and Human Machine Interface (HMI). I still encourage the students to participate in laboratory-based face-to-face classes because it is better to ex perience it firsthand,” said Mikee Talusan, MEE 4A.

Throughout the pandemic, Bulacan State University authorized selected college departments to have limited face-to-face classes for its fourth-year students. Being lab oratory-focused, the Mechatronics Engineering Department (MEE) is among the few selected programs. The specified limited face-to-face classes took place from May 2nd to 27th, 2022, with each batch con sisting of five-day classes. The limited face-to-face sessions for the students’ troubleshooting laboratory subjects were completed satisfactorily, with no casualties. Students who took part expressed their thoughts on how the limited face-to-face improved their skills as MEE students. They have also spoken about whether they still encourage incoming 4th-year students to participate in laboratory-based face-to-face classes, given that our country has not fully recovered from the pandemic. According to Mr. John Azada, MEE 4A, “The face-to-face class made me apply most of the theoretical knowledge we acquired in the on line class. This increased our skill and knowledge as a Mechatronics Engineer, which will ultimately help us in the future. It helped us boost our skills and rekindle our enthusiasm in the field. This will guide them in their future endeavors knowing the basics of things.”
Consultancy and Safety Services BOSH SO2 Training, expressed his insights, “The BOSH program enlightened me on how important safety is in a working environment. It not only improves the way workers move in the workplace but also creates a safe place where hazards and risks are significantly reduced to a level where people can move freely and be able to do their tasks without danger being present. Significantly, it allows the continuous flow of productivity in a workplace and, at the same time, considers the preservation of the lives of our workers in the industry.”
“To be able to conduct proper training and discussion about proper Occupational Safety and Health to individuals and to produce new generations of safety of ficers to serve and spread across the country,” Mr. Gonzalez added.

by Benedict Abdon Aldrin James Lucas, a 3rd-year Mechatronics Engineering student, won as the First Placer in the “The Engineering Innovations Congress Exposition 2022 (Expo 2022)” last February 25, 2022. A total of five (5) teams have compet ed in the said event. Two (2) teams have two (2) members, another two (2) teams have three (3) members, and only one (1) team has one (1) member. They have showcased their social and tech-based innovations or solutions intended to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In an interview with Mr. Lucas, he explained his innovation and its purpose that led him to achieve the first place award in the event. “My entry was a toned-down version of our entry for the DOST YIP with Liel Juguilon and Daniel Manalad. Originally, yung submission namin doon is a system na kayang mag-separate ng used face masks from trash piles tapos i-pe-prepare niya for recycling since mahirap i-recycle yung mga ganito due to the pandemic kasi considered siya as hazardous wastes. Since overkill yung design namin noon, hindi siya na-accept ni DOST, and sayang yung idea. So, I used it sa contest na ito but nag-focus na lang ako sa disinfection part nung mga face mask para ma-achieve pa rin yung goal feature na ma-pre pare for recycling yung mga face masks while minimizing the risk of transmission of diseases.” Slide decks, brief concept papers, and a recorded version of his presentation have been done in preparation for the whole course of events. He has started from scratch even though there is already an original proposal paper to minimize the risk of overlooking the mistakes in the first version. He also added that this whole proposal revision had been his past time during the semester break.

“First of all, yung team ko sa YIP na nakatulong ko sa pag-conceptualize nung concept before, kaya madali na lang yung reconstructing process niya the 2nd time around. Special mention to my best friend na si Liel na kahit ‘di na niya ko nasamahan sa contest na ito is full support pa rin, and sa team mentor namin before na si Sir Clint. Also, sa mga MEE faculties na nag-help samin to think about what aspects to consider sa pagde-design nung system, starting with Sir Gabs, Sir Bagsic, Sir Juan, Sir Jason, and Ma’am Jo. I would also like to extend my gratitude sa Fabrication Laboratory team ng BulSU, to Sir Arvin and friends, for assisting us sa pag-canvas ng expenses noon and helping us decide what to use sa pagbuo nung design concept; kay Sir Fermin, for helping us on how to apply for the YIP the first time around; also sa mga nakausap namin na LGUs and private sectors for their insights on how to address the problem properly; to my mentor, Sir Mark Ocampo, who helped us figure out the statistical aspects na need i-consider para ma-assure na magiging valid yung data sa theoretical testing of the device; my friends and my parents sa pag-support all along; and lastly, sa friend ko na nag-invite sakin to join the Engineering ICON 2022 for the wonderful learning opportunity.” In the end, he did not expect anything upon joining the event because his purposes were to support his friend, whose organization is the facilitator of the said event, and at least make their YIP idea be used on something else noteworthy. He said, “It was stressful in some aspects, but it was all worth it in the end.”

The thesis title of the former mechatronics engineering student who is now an instructor in the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, Engr. Reggiel Clint L. Valdez, is “Generating Green Energy Using Seebeck-Effect.” Their research and his groupmates aim to find a clean, sustainable, and environmentally friendly alternative energy source. With this, the researchers came up with the idea of using thermoelectric generators to make their project feasible. They aim to utilize thermoelectric generators as their power source, but to perform the task correctly, they must be exposed to two different temperature.

Activities, tests, and recitations represent many challenges to a college student’s adventure. Those specific activities are a way of preparing the learner for the success that they all desire. Aside from the previously mentioned schoolwork and activities, thesis or research paper writing is one of the most challenging tasks, particularly for students in their final year in college. A thesis is a lengthy study paper often used as a university degree’s last project.

Generating Green Energy Using the Seebeck-Effect: A Study for the Benefit of Society
Along with the thesis writing, the Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics Engineering and other degrees in the College of Engineering include the creation of a prototype, primarily the output of the thesis. With the design of the thesis and its prototype, the most important thing worth remembering is that the researchers should apply all their knowledge to their program.
In conclusion, a point to remember during thesis writing and prototype creation is that the process is not simple, but if you stay focused on your goals and allow others to assist you during those times, you may succeed. As long as your goals are feasible, you can make them happen.

A solar parabolic dish is used as a heat source on the hot side of thermoelectric generators. In contrast, on the cold side, a heat sink is employed to keep the temperature of the thermoelectric generators lower than on the other side. Moreover, the researchers ensured the user’s convenience, and so they made the solar parabolic dish automated. Mr. Valdez and his groupmates’ thesis was successfully defended after 206 days of thorough consideration of all their expertise in the mechanical, electrical, and electronics fields.

Ayon sa kanya, “Well, I’ve always wanted to be on stage with my parents. I wanted them to be proud of me. Gusto ko talaga na every gagraduate ako is kasama ko sila sa stage na magsasabit sakin ng medal or something kasi since kinder hanggang senior high graduation ko is ganoon ang nangyayari. And sana, for this last stage of my school graduation is gusto ko kasama ko pa rin sila with me. And, that is what makes me strive more academically, despite any challenges.”

In terms of my study habits, it gives me plenty of time para gumawa ng mga assignments or mag-review ng mas mahabang oras unlike sa face-to-face kasi na need mo pang bumyahe or gumayak kapag papasok which is nakakain iyong oras mo.”
Instead na mag-cheat ako or something, I’d rather have a low grade. Lalo sa new platform ngayon ng mga exams, it’s easy to cheat but I’d chose not to do it very often, like ayoko lang din lokohin sarili ko na okay mataas grade ko but I’m not proud. Mas okay na yung mababa nakuha ko but I know na sakin lahat galing ng sagot at natuto ako from mistakes. But on the other hand, nagmamatter din talaga sakin grades. Grade conscious talaga ako since then, like pag alam kong may mali sa checking, irereklamo or ipapatama ko talaga. And siguro, kaya rin nagmamatter saken grades or grade conscious ako is because I have a goal din talaga na maging honor or something na may ma-achieve ako academically. “Flexible in a way na kayang mag-adapt easily sa mga possible chang es or in different circumstances na pwedeng mangyari. Given the pandemic na binago halos lahat ng learning platform, I still have to manage dapat on how to learn and mag-adapt sa bagong platform in a way na iyong matututunan ko is hindi maaapektuhan or malilimitahan. Despite sa lahat ng pagbabagong nangyayari salungat sa nakasanayan, I have to be flexible rin talaga to make changes sa study habits ko to cope with the new different platforms and environments. And, I know na yung pagiging flexible na ‘to is very beneficial for me sa mga future endeavors ko like sino man makasalamuha ko, saang industry man ako mapunta, iba-ba man ang ugali na makakasalamuha ko, at ano mang mga pagsubok ang dumating sa pag-achieve ng mga bagay na pangarap ko, alam ko na kakayanin kong mag-adapt at any conditions and live with it. ALL IS WELL kumbaga.”

Dalawang magkaibang konsepto, ngunit subukan nating pag-isahin.

Innovations such as web handling machines, automotive subsystems, robotic systems, overhead cranes, flexible rotors and cables, industrial production machinery, automated guided vehicles, and so on are applications of mechatronics systems. Undoubtedly, the significance of mechatronic systems in the industrial segments promotes automation and integration of technologies that improve the operation, which is beneficial in the manufacturing and production facilities. Thus, the mechatronics system is the future of all systems.
One of the emerging disciplines in the field of engineering is Mechatronics. A Japanese engineer at Yaskawa Electric Corporation, Mr. Tetsuya Mori, coined the term mechatronics: “mecha” from the mechanism and “tronics” from electronics. It is the incorporation of mechanisms and electronics. Moreover, it integrates the three overlapping disciplines, which include mechanical systems, electronic systems, and information technology.
The mechanical systems involve machine elements. Electronic systems contain microelectronics, power electronics, sensors, and actuator technology. Lastly, information technology comprises systems theory, automation, software engineering, and artificial intelligence.

Nowadays, the fourth industrial revolution has transformed automation, monitoring, and production in the industrial setting worldwide. As a matter of fact, science and technology have a pivotal role in the boundless contributions of technological advancements. This development aims to provide convenience and efficiency through automation that interconnects with mechatronics.
The critical elements of a mechatronics system are the physical system modeling, sensors and actuators, signals and systems, computer and logic systems, software, and data acquisition. A mechatronics system should have a basic mechanical structure that generates a particular carrying behavior or movement; sensors collect information on the systems or the environment; processors evaluate and generate data, and actuators that are converted into forces, movements, electrical voltages, or other quantities act on the primary system or its environment.
29THE MECHATRONICLES VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO. 1 SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY In today’s modern world, practically every person’s existence revolves almost entirely around technology. Engaging with various machinery, equipment, devices, or anything designed by science appears to be a regular part of one’s life. One of the most crucial and helpful technologies is that used in the field of medicine. This article will discuss one medical technology deemed beneficial in an individual’s life. Medical advances have now improved life expectancy and quality of life while diminishing mortality rates everywhere across the world. One of the causes of such occurrences is heart failure. Every viable human being comprises the heart, a hugely important organ. It is necessary because it delivers oxygen-rich blood to all living cells and deoxygenated blood to the lungs. Hence, having a so-called “Artificial Cardiac Pacemaker” is immensely beneficial to patients. It is a small, batteryoperated device. As everyone knows, when your heart beats irregularly or too slowly, this device detects it. It delivers a signal to your heart, causing it to pump at the proper rate. There are two primary components of modern pacemakers: the pulse generator, which houses the pacemaker’s battery and the electronics that generate electrical signals, and one or more leads, which are tiny lines that transport electrical signals from the pulse generator to your heart. The pacemaker’s electrodes are located in the leads. If your heart is pumping too quickly or too slowly, the electrodes, which are usually located inside your heart and sense your heartbeat, send electrical signals to your brain. A doctor or cardiologist will examine the patient to determine if they are a good candidate for a pacemaker. A sluggish heartbeat is one of the main reasons a pacemaker is advised. A pacemak er may also treat a paused heartbeat, an irregular or rapid heartbeat, and certain types of heart failure.

PACEMAKER
Conversely, if this electric medical device has advantages, the risks or drawbacks will not be disregarded. There are dangers associated with any surgical treatment. Though the implantation of a pacemaker is considered a simple surgical procedure, the Mayo Clinic reports that it does have some hazards, which are experienced by less than 5% of patients. Infection at the operation site is one of the hazards. Swelling and bruising may occur if the patient is allergic to the anesthetic. A collapsed lung or injury to blood arteries or nerves around the pacemaker implantation are more severe hazards. A pacemaker is a metal device sensitive to internal and external electrical impulses implanted in your chest. Internal sensitivity is the pacemaker going about its business. External sensitivity, albeit uncommon, can cause your pacemaker to send a misleading signal. It would be best not to place your cell phone on your implantation. Pacemakers are also at risk from security systems and power generation equipment. Medical technology covers a diverse field. Medicine appears to be becoming increasingly reliant on technology. They have previously infiltrated hospitals and are now invading our homes and bodies. We can claim that people are incredibly good because of their vast expertise in developing equipment or devices that can constantly cure the sick and prolong each patient’s life.
Assistant for Virtual Evaluation (MEAVE) allows students to browse their subjects, compute their general weighted average in each semester, and encode their subject status (passed or failed), and then obtain a recommendation based on their input using various algorithms. Additionally, through its project function, it answers many students’ frequently asked questions. Furthermore, this would assist not just regular students but also and especially irregular students, who are the central objective of this initiative.

MEE students will obtain a grasp of every topic they will take from their first to final year. This program saves them time, especially when they have urgent concerns or other issues. MEAVE, despite being in its early stages, can provide such information with a click. They will be able to determine which subjects they can only take in the next semester if they fail, which benefits both the administration and them. This project may reduce the time it takes to assess and address student concerns individually. Students could utilize MEAVE to obtain some of the information they need, reducing the load on administrators. If this software is enhanced to have more capabilities and high coverage, especially if future developers connect an online database to the program, the MEE department will be able to assess student status and maybe offer a direct suggestion in the app itself. Furthermore, this type of endeavor might be the beginning of what the course itself strives for, which is automation.

Like MEAVE, invention and innovation begin with a desire to solve a specific problem. It will allow students to monitor their status and respond to concerns at any time, with fewer hiccups. This could be upgraded in the next few years to give more in-depth recommendations and streamline features. Introducing this type of effort led us to see how we, as a team, and the Py thon Pod Heads, will be able to revolutionize the way manual transactions occur. Knowing peo ple’s needs and focusing on how to meet them is a great way to make a significant difference.

The team hypothesized how they could help students analyze their class standing on their own and obtain information they would need in this course. We brainstormed ideas to better visualize how this project will be developed, both the back-end program and the user interface. Members individually built the back-end program using Python. We merged our individual outputs to ensure all features were intact and functioning properly while the graphical user interface (GUI) was created in the Qt Designer application. All components, including buttons, input fields, labels, etc., were developed in the Qt App so users could interact and use them seamlessly. After a few weeks of testing, we decided to modify some of the GUI’s elements and add some new details to make it ready for release.

Autonomous Robot
While doing this project, our group helped each other to successfully build this robot. We distributed the tasks, but when it comes to testing it, we have coordinated each problem and thought of a solution to make it work perfectly. This project is the result of what we have learned in the Python Pod.
The Autonomous Robot uses a Raspberry Pi Pico as a microcontroller, where it functions as the brain of the robot. It also uses an ultrasonic sensor to measure the distance if there is an obstacle in the way. The sensor is attached to a servo motor. This will help the sensor look for an alternate path when it detects an obstacle in front of it, and since this robot is not remotely controlled, it will move continuously to a place where there are no obstacles or hindrances in front.
