Sex Week promotes diversity

Auraria celebrates Sex Week on the eve of Valentine’s Day to promote diversity and sex positivity. The events began Feb. 8 and concludes Feb 11.

The panel on Feb. 8, covered the perspective of feminine or femme individuals. Regardless of orientation or gender, the term “femme” is used to describe the mannerisms or personality traits that are traditionally perceived as feminine.

“Dresses, bras and all that stuff, I gave that up a long time ago,” said trans costume designer Ko Sauls. “I use my femininepresenting identity to cosplay as female.

It’s easier on my dysphoria,” he said. “I’m always going to be on the male part of the spectrum. I still identify as male, I’m just a feminine-presenting male.”

LGBTQSS Assistant Director Rachel Green said the focus of panel was to give insight into “navigating gender in

relationships and gender expectation” for queer individuals. “The objective is to focus on femme and queer sex lives of people of color,” Sauls said.

At the panel, mother Jessiy Ramirez, discussed femininity and masculinity as a parent.

“I like being able to go between the two and help my kids feel comfortable so that they don’t fall into those gender stereotypes,” Ramirez said.

Tuesday’s event was “Don’t Pass It On,” hosted by LGBTQSS. The event focused on conversation about communication, sex and STI’s.

The event also included information on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (or PREP), an FDA-approved medication used to prevent the spread of HIV. Lead event coordinator Craig Boyd said, “It’s a daily regimen for people who are HIV-positive to prevent the transmission.”

The discussion on safe sex continued Wednesday with “Cards and Condoms,”

If Rubio’s campaign continues its 3-2-1 strategy and nabs second place next in New Hampshire, then he has a real shot at the nomination.

However, his robotic performance at the last debate before the New Hampshire primary blunted his momentum, spawning the great #Marcobot hashtag on social media. We’ll see how damaging that was. I don’t expect Cruz to do as well in New Hampshire, so this primary will be an interesting one to watch.

Sanders turned out an astonishing 86 percent of the youth vote. While the Clinton campaign is spinning Iowa as a technical win, privately she must be sweating bullets thanks to the outcome.

The lack of debates on the Democratic side when compared to the GOP field has spurned lots of criticism toward both the Clinton Campaign and DNC Chairperson Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, fortunately for voters both campaigns have agreed to stage more debates as Clinton and Sanders look for opportunities to stand out in front of the electorate.

In reality there is no clear choice for party favorite or front-runner.

Though Ted Cruz pulled ahead of Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, the ratio of votes for each candidate was close to equal.

Democrats are playing this electoral process safe this go around. For Barack Obama, his 2008 victory in Iowa was the turning point after which Hillary Clinton was no longer considered the inevitable Democratic choice. Candidates typically gain momentum and support when they show early favor. This year? Clinton and Sanders are neck and neck. I don’t see polls showing a clear choice for the Dems until Super Tuesday.

It doesn’t surprise me Trump’s popularity waned after he decided to forego the final Republican debate before the caucus. It was the first nail in his proverbial coffin. As we get closer to election day, I believe that his appeal will continue to decline as people get serious about choosing the next president elect. Rubio almost beat Trump for second place in Iowa. With predictions that Cruz won’t do well in New Hampshire, Rubio could take the state, making it a two man race against Cruz to the finish.

By Keenan McCall kmccall3@msudenver.edu The dust from the Iowa Caucus has settled and people can rest easy knowing which candidates the key state favors at the start of the election year. I just have to wonder—who cares?

Don’t misunderstand me. I know full well that this is the fate of our country that I’m talking about here.

What I’m getting at, is that the fate of our country isn’t going to be determined by a popularity poll held at the start of the year.

A state’s leaning can’t be properly gauged by a poll held after the state has seen endless attention, attention that they won’t possibly see once the next president is in office.

It made for some great feel good material to boost up Bernie, Hillary, Trump and the rest, but that’s all it is — fluff to pad out the long campaign trail ahead.

What matters is going to come several months from now. It will come when the candidates finally take firm stances on key issues, lay out their plans or agendas and show us what they’re really worth.

Until then, the rest is just superficial numbers and cheap talk.

You can’t be what you can’t see

By Sean Rhodes srhodes8@msudenver.edu Why don’t we have a white history month? Every February someone will ask this question, and every February it feels like no one offers an answer. White people mostly ask this question. It’s a sincere question, one that doesn’t always stem from prejudice, but sometimes curiosity. So I thought I’d offer a sincere answer. Sincere, not comfortable.

In my #OscarsSoWhite piece I mentioned that white people like to see themselves represented. This is not a bad thing. People like to see themselves. White people seem to be okay with people of color being represented as long as they don’t acknowledge it (in the same way they don’t want to draw attention to their own representation).

Most white people grow up thinking race is something that has to be inserted into conversation.

If one doesn’t mention race, then

race must not be a factor. This is comforting, but it isn’t how race works. I don’t suddenly stop being black just because no one mentions it.

This is a case where discussing race is a lot more nuanced. Race isn’t something that exists only when it’s spoken. It exists all the time whether we acknowledge it or not. People of color grow up recognizing race from a very young age. White people, however, usually get to live their life without a thought to race. For most whites it is only when they grow up and go to college that they’re tasked with thinking about their race to begin with.

Whiteness is so embedded in culture it doesn’t need to be mentioned. It is the default. Since most whites comfortably live this way, most assume other races also live a similar experience and that these rules are shared between races.

Now apply this on a greater scale. If whites are taught not to acknowledge race and they see something that does, it’s easy for them to assume the other race is morally wrong for doing so.

It never occurs to them that not acknowledging race has allowed them to be blind to the racism that has already fostered. That’s how institutional racism works. It’s

invisible. It’s unspoken.

Black History Month exists because if it didn’t exist people would likely not remember to think of the contributions black people have made to history. Every white child learns about Martin Luther King Jr., but no white children will learn about Claudette Colvin in a classroom.

The historical figures that are white are numerous and we don’t confine them to merely one month.

In other words, there are already eleven months that celebrate white history; we just don’t identify the whiteness of those historical figures. Like with whiteness in society, whiteness in history doesn’t need to be mentioned.

Right about now someone usually mentions that this isn’t true. They’re right. White history is actually celebrated in all twelve months. We don’t stop talking about white men (and some women) just because it’s February.

White people have never been left out of history and no one runs rampant on internet forums suggesting that white people haven’t done anything as a race. We know white people contributed to history, and we’re reminded every day. If black history is forgotten, people begin to think black people haven’t done anything. If the idea that

MetStaff black people have done nothing is allowed to foster, then people will use it to justify their racism by calling it an “objective” fact.

Black History Month is there to remind people blacks have contributed to society and the world. If black people and black history were thought of without needing a reminder, then there would be no need to have a Black History Month.

White people are doing well on the representation front. There are prominently represented white people for white children to look up to. Black children can look up to white people as well, but if black children don’t see black people doing great things, they will begin to believe they can’t do great things or worse… believe they’re not supposed to. You can’t be what you can’t see. This isn’t just true of black people, but of every minority.

Black history is not in opposition to white history, and to celebrate black history does not silence white history. They are not in conflict with each other. White history is already acknowledged and celebrated and has been for centuries. Just because we don’t acknowledge the whiteness in history doesn’t mean the whiteness is non-existent.

Connect with your music - start a record collection

By Chris Bjork cbjork1@msudenver.edu One unfortunate aspect that comes with the progression of technology is the pressure many consumers feel to keep up. With each new product that promises better convenience, accessibility and mobility, this unfortunately results in an overshadowing of some of the promising qualities the previous technology brought.

The music industry has definitely been one of the biggest victims to this particular issue. Between the plethora of music streaming services, updated technology and

mass amounts of music being released, it’s apparent we live in a somewhat eclectic music listening culture. While having the ability to access an enormous catalogue of music whenever you want has its benefits, it eliminates the scope, nostalgia and enjoyment that comes with experiencing it on vinyl.

One of the initial things that I missed the most when I bought my first iPod was not being able to hold the album in my hands while listening. There is a certain kind of excitement that came with being able to pour over the liner notes and admire the various band photos when I bought CD’s. I’ve always felt that experiencing music in a retro form can potentially get a listener closer to the artist in subtle ways. Unlike many free music streaming services, purchasing music in a vinyl format also gives back more to the artist.

In addition, many people may also argue that listening to music on an

LP simply sounds better.

Using vinyl makes the music listening experience a more engaging process. Taking the time to take the vinyl out of its cover, place it on the platter, and set the needle forces the listener to participate in the actual activity of music listening. It’s too easy these days for listeners to become desensitized to the depth of the art they’re listening to in a musical landscape that demands expediency and constant new material. Fortunately, however, it seems that a vast majority of consumers have begun to see the potential of the old school way of appreciating music. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, vinyl sales are up 52 percent from the first half of 2014 to the first half of 2015 — from $145.8 million to $221.8 million.

Not only is this good news for a wide array of music listeners because of guaranteed sound

quality and the opportunity to garnish a collection, but also for record and music stores around the world. Listeners now have a better opportunity to purchase the music they enjoy in a format that will deliver good business and give listeners a new platform to enjoy their music. There is also a lack of insurance that comes with buying music digitally, for example, technological malfunctions and data corruption could potentially erase your library completely.

Buying vinyl gives people a secure and safe way to build a music collection that they can hold on to forever. While there is an advantage of having the ability to access any music you want in a matter of seconds, vinyl allows listeners to get closer to the music they love.

Although his job is akin to herding cats, Eddie manages to tackle PR issues with panache.

Unfortunately, when one of the biggest stars in the industry, Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) disappears just before the final shoot of his new film. This calls into question not only Eddie’s skills, but his resolve as well.

It’s the kind of music that you play while speeding down a stretching desert road or making an epic walk through a Spaghetti Western Film.

Seattle’s Psychedelic Garage and Blues heavyweights, the Night Beats, have a knack at revisiting vintage sounds. The trio’s third album, “Who Sold My Generation,” fully establishes the band’s menacing character of their music through an old fashioned lens.

The album starts off with “Celebration #1,” that begins with an archived sound clip of a man describing a tape recorder in a creepy manner.

The audio sample leads into Danny Lee Blackwell speaking as if he was reciting scripture. Quotes like, “When they come into your town, we are the sons of the sold generation,” help portray the attitude very well.

It’s one of the most experimental tracks the group has written, and it’s backed with an awesome cyclical sounding groove, wound tight with the synchronized bass and drums.

The album’s single, “No Cops,” showcases one of the most infectious vocal melodies for the band, with Blackwell

hollering at the top of his register over a stomping melody. It’s a powerful track that reveals the band’s maturity in their songwriting with social commentary on the American police force.

However, it’s at this point in the track listing when the album begins to show its weaknesses. The song “Right/Wrong” provides an excellent vocal hook and a catchy melody but might remind listeners too much of the song “Playing Dead.”

This track gives listeners the sense of deja vu while listening to the track, noticing how the guitar melody plays an almost identical part in the previous song.

Night Beats sometimes makes a bad habit of playing too close to their ’60s influences. For example, the song “Porque Mañana” appears to be a promising track.

Blackwell sings in Spanish for the duration, giving the song a creative niche. However, the instrumentation is boring, overplayed and tarnishes the song’s character.

The lull at this part of the album is saved with “Sunday Mourning,” which is a breath of fresh air, revealing one of the best songs the band has written. It’s a psychedelic, bluesy anthem that is supported with stylish

casting an epigrammatic light onto the culture of the time. “Hail Caesar” is in wonderfully chaotic balance, combining the depth, wit and class sorely missing from most big box films today.

This thrusts the film into a humorous hubbub of intertwined stories reminiscent of the golden age of cinema.

The cinematography is visually stunning and warm, accentuating every detail that went into making the film into a unique period piece. Every facet of each scene is lavishly adorned with details that keep you enthralled in the story.

Although “Hail Caesar” has an all-star cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, don’t expect to see them in their tired old roles. The Coen Brothers did an excellent job of pushing

these A-listers into new personas.

One of the most unique aspects of this film, is how it is able to inject humor about religion into some scenes without being at its expense. In fact, this film strayed away from raunchy and overtly sexual humor, (the standard go-to of current comedic hits) and went with wit, quips and tact.

This film is refreshingly funny, extorting laughter from the most critical of reviewers and flipping the script in a plethora of ways, bringing waves of nostalgia for when Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant dominated the screen.

This genre twisting film has much to offer. This movie is an 18th century period piece, involving a romantic love triangle laced in deceit and tragedy, mixed with flesh eating zombies.

Women of that time period often had predetermined roles in society and were subjected to pre-arranged marriages.

However, in this alternate history, the gender roles are flipped. Ladies are heavily trained in the art of war in an effort to combat the threat of a zombie take over.

The female characters possess strong personas, often wielding swords and other

Director George Romero probably never realized how much impact his low-budget, independent film “The Night of the Living Dead” would have on today’s society.

Zombies have become a huge part of American pop culture. The undead have invaded comic books, literature, videogames, television, theaters and even annual events like the Zombie Crawl.

Seth Grahame-Smith puts an undead spin on 1813 novel “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. He even included Jane Austen’s name as co-author for his 2009 book “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.”

Fans of the original book will be happy to know that most of the key elements are still intact. The newer version reimagined those elements into something more sinister, complex and unique. This dark parody is not for the faint of heart, yet the

guitar licks during the verse that revolves around a fluttering drum beat.

Blackwell’s guitar solo in the song is fierce and shows no mercy with its abrasive hooks, that sound as if the guitar is a screaming demonic beast.

“Bad Love” is another banger of a track that struts along with ballroom-like piano, glittering guitar lines, drum like bells and bright touches of saxophone. It’s a song that has a believable atmosphere behind it that places the listener in what sounds like a song performed in a dark, mysterious, ‘50s London night club.

The album ends on an impressive and powerful note with ‘Egypt Berry.” The song opens with a snake charmer guitar riff that’s trapped in a Garage Rock nightmare.

Night Beats has succeeded at making their tightest sounding album yet with “Who Sold My Generation,” supported by a track listing full of good songwriting, groovy melodies and solid instrumentation.

Notable characters are Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James of “Cinderella”), who plays the headstrong rebellious daughter, Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley of “Maleficent”), as a notorious zombie hunter, his step-brother Mr. Bingley (Jack Huston of “American Hustle”), as a charming, gentleman soldier and Darcy’s domineering aunt Lady Catherine de Bourgh (Lena Headey of “Game of Thrones”).

“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” is a wonderful mashup that will leave you in stitches.

These aren’t the classic mindless zombies audiences are used to. They’re able to function, speak and even blend in with society which creates innovative new ways of luring poor victims to their deaths in their quest for brains.

Denver painted orange for Broncos’ Super Bowl Championship Victory Parade

After several years of missed opportunities, the Broncos finally brought home the Super Bowl Championship fans have longed for. In celebration of this accomplishment, Coloradans came out to Civic Center Park and the surrounding streets to commemorate the occasion with a parade, live music by Colorado band 3OH!3 and local pride.

“I’m just proud,” said Shauna Sut-

ton, a lifetime fan attending with her sons. “Through all the goods and all the bads, I’m proud to see them do so well.”

Five game win-streak snapped in Pueblo

By Nick Reilly nreilly1@msudenver.edu Metro men’s basketball split on the road, first running away with the 87-80 win against Western State Feb. 5 and a 90-83 loss to CSU-Pueblo the following night.

After the weekend, Metro is 14-9 overall, 12 -5 i n t he Ro c k y Mou nt a i n At h le t ic C on fe re nc e .

Against Western State, four Roadrunners scored in double digits including junior forward/center Andre Harris who had a

game-high 21 points. Harris also led the team in rebounds with eight. Senior guard Tony Dobbinson finished the game with 18 points. Junior guard Brian Howard and sophomore guard Peter Moller had 15 points each.

At the 12:10 mark in the first half, the Roadrunners trailed by five after an 8-1 run by Western State. Metro quickly responded with a 12-2 run only to have the Mountaineers answer with clutch shooting taking a one-point 35-34 lead with 2:56 remaining in the first half.

The Roadrunner defense held up, holding Western State to a single free throw closing out the half.

Metro led 42-36 at the break.

The Roadrunners kept their momentum rolling as their lead grew to 11 with 7:15 to go in the game.

The Roadrunners knocked down 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute to put a stamp on the road win.

Metro basketball goes on their longest road trip of the season which began Feb. 5 against Western State. The Roadrunners will continue on the road Feb. 12 against Regis and Feb. 13 against Chadron State.

Game 2, L 90-83 Moller’s 19 points led Metro in scoring in the 90-83 loss to CSU-Pueblo. He also led the team in assists with four. Dobbinson and Howard finished with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

The Roadrunners started out strong with a 14-9 lead. The Thunderwolves later answered with three consecutive three pointers to build a 34-28 lead with 2:39 remaining in the first.

Metro trailed 39-34 at the half.

The Roadrunners continued into the second half, taking a 58-55 lead with 13:01 remaining in the game.

Metro hit a wall with Howard being the only Roadrunner to score over the next five minutes. CSU-Pueblo went 11-of-12 from the line in the final moments of the game.

The Thunderwolves went on to earn the seven-point win upping their record to 14-9 overall, 10-7 in RMAC. Metro continues their road trip against Regis Feb. 12 and will thn play Chadron State Feb. 13.
