Winning streak ensures Joseph stays Firing the mediocre coach would spell disaster for young roster
BRIEFS With conference win, Haave sets school record The women’s basketball team, 2-4, opened up their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season with a 64-61 win against Chadron State College on Dec. 1. This made Tanya Haave the winningest coach in MSU Denver history. Jaelynn Smith scored 22 points, made three assists and five steals. Behind Smith was Emily Hartegan with 19 points. With 24 seconds left in the game, Smith tied the game. During overtime, seniors Smith, Bree Wellington and Jonalyn Wittwer were fouled out, leaving an inexperienced line up, and with a steal from Jaiden Galloway they found a way to win the game. The Roadrunners visit Regis University on Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. and Colorado Christian University on Dec. 8 at 5 p.m.
Men drop first conference game of the season The MSU Denver men’s basketball team, 1-3, lost to Chadron State College 76-67 on Dec. 1. Despite the loss, Druce Asah had a game high of 17 points, and now he leads the team with 14.8 points per game. During the first half of the game, Garrett Carter lead the team with 10 points and MSU Denver hit eight of nine free throws. In the second half, the Roadrunners shot 35.3 percent. Joining Asah and Carter in double points was Kendall McIntosh with 11 points. On Dec. 7, the Roadrunners will face Regis University at 7 p.m. and Colorado Christian University on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.

TRENDING NEWS GOP hacked during
US and China strike
midterm elections
temporary trade truce
The National Republican Congressional Committee announced on Tuesday that it fell victim to a cyberattack during the 2018 midterm elections. According to NPR, the emails of four senior NRCC aides were breached a few months before April, when the intrusion was discovered and reported. But some top GOP officials weren’t made aware of the attack until Politico reporters reached out to them for comment. A spokesperson for the NRCC said the committee has investigated the incident internally in addition to reporting it to the FBI, which is also looking into it. The responsible party is not yet known.
U.S. and China reached a temporary truce in their trade war that involved escalating tariffs. The agreement pushes a deadline which was originally set to be Jan. 1 back three months. President Trump hailed the cease-fire as “one of the largest deals ever made,” and the Chinese Foreign Ministry characterized the country’s meeting in Buenos Aires as “very successful.” However, Trump warned that he is “a Tariff Man.” Wall Street reflected fears that the trade war is not over, with the DOW crashing nearly 800 points on Tuesday after climbing 288 in response to the deal.
George H. W. Bush dies at age 94
The United States’ 41th president George H. W. Bush passed away on Friday, on Nov. 30. He will be honored this week in Washington D.C. and Houston with memorial services before being laid to rest at the presidential library and museum at Texas A&M University. Former presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, Bush’s son George W. and President Donald Trump are expected to attend the funeral at Washington National Cathedral.
Voting irregularities pause North Carolina election
Several weeks after the midterm elections, unusual rates of absentee voting in several North Carolina counties have election officials cautious about finalizing results. North Carolina’s House of Representatives 9th District, initially declared for Republican Mark Harris by fewer than 1,000 votes, has not been certified after the nine member board of election unanimously voted to delay, and to hold a hearing regarding the irregularities no later than Dec. 21. State Republicans have objected the move, while state Democrats have filed several affidavits highlighting unusual activity during the election.
French PM puts brakes on fuel tax
After weeks of protests, and damage to several iconic landmarks, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe made concessions to the Gilets Jaunes — the Yellow Vests — and agreed to forstall planned increases to diesel and gasoline taxes. Initially focused on increasing fuel costs, the Gilets Jaunes have been protesting more broadly the past two weekends, with the social-media organized movement decrying French President Emmanuel Macron perceived abandonment of the working class. Macron himself has made no statement since protesters scaled and damaged the Arc de Triomphe on Dec. 1, despite a previously combative tone.
