Conner Pepin 1997-2018 By Rich Allen rallen57@msudenver.edu Conner Pepin’s smile and heart reverberated through the MSU Denver baseball program, even through an injury-plagued career. Issues with his left-arm practically ended his pitching career, but did nothing to derail his passion for the game or his unrelenting positivity. Give him a bucket to sit on and a few baseballs and he was happy to jump up so he could run them out to the umpire. The energy that lit up the Roadrunners locker room, even in their down moments, was extinguished on Aug. 19. At the age of 21 — the day before he was set to begin his senior year of college — Pepin died unexpectedly at his home in Henderson, Colorado from an undisclosed cause. The Brighton High School gymnasium, that Pepin once graced as an all-conference honorable mention basketball player, was filled to the brim with people whose lives he had impacted. They all gathered to recognize a young man who was the archetype of what a student athlete should be: charismatic, motivated and ambitious. ”Conner was somebody that you rooted for,” said MSU Denver head coach Ryan Strain. “You wanted him to do well. When he got hurt, I wanted him to be part of the team. He touched a lot of guys in our program. It was an honor to coach him.” Injuries to Pepin’s throwing arm held him to seven appearances in three seasons at MSU Denver. In the fall of 2017, pins in his elbow from a previous injury needed to be removed, with the repercussions significantly diminishing the chances he’d ever pitch again.
