Community Dec 1 1 and we will have our usual Hogmany party on Saturday 31 Dec into 01 Jan 1 2, see the notice on the notice board to reserve your place. 3) Free Heartstart course I am planning on re-running the 2 hour Heartstart course again in January 201 2, to act as a refresher for TAROT OF THE M ONTH by Starlight Scotland The Sun At a time where the dark overshadows the light this card makes an appearance to let us know that everything will be ok. It is ok to feel inward, quiet, wanting to stay in a safe place, that is the energies the Winter brings to us. For so long many of us work against these energies, fearing depression and illness if we don't carry on regardless. The sun asks us to go with the flow of our energies, be kind to ourselves for after the darkness comes the light and that will be our time to shine, if we take the time now to rejuvenate, look after ourselves, then we will have the energy and resources to move forward when the energies say so. There is a lot of spiral energies around us at the moment but the pace is slow, gathering momentum for when the time is right!!

RELEASE FROM PENICUIK AND DISTRICT BRANCH SNP
At our meeting at Navaar House Hotel on 8th November Councillor Margaret Wilson advised the Branch members about the New Pentland House. This is a replacement to Pentland House and is situated where Eastfield School once stood. A model of the new building will soon be available to view in Pentland House and the Library. Margaret told us how from the start when she was shown the plans she asked for a model to be made that could be displayed to the general public to give everyone an idea of this new concept in Sheltered Housing. She went on to explain that within this complex would be a community café and hairdressing facilities. The New Pentland House complex is about community involvement and keeping our elderly residents involved with day to day life. She also voiced her concerns over access to the complex which hopefully will be addressed. Joe Wallace who was a Branch delegate to the Party’s Conference in Inverness gave a report to members. Before 1 600 delegates Alex Salmond opened up the SNP National Conference with a scathing attack on the Conservative/ Liberal Democrat UK government who, after a lot of research had gone into the project, reneged on it’s promise of £1 bn pounds to Longannet Power Station to convert it into a leader in the field of carbon capture and storage this would have safeguarded the jobs of the workforce and was also in spite of the Chancellor taking in £1 4bn in extra tax in a raid on our oil in the North Sea, a commodity that seems to disappear every time an election is called. Labour’s discredited Public Finance Initiative which has been used to build schools and hospitals was also condemned by Alex Neil who highlighted the huge debts this has created for future generations. In his speech to Conference, John Swinney pointed out that Scotland has the potential to become the sixth richest country in the world which would allow us to use our resources for the benefit of the peoples of Scotland and not wealth creation for the few as has been the case for the last forty years. Dr. Joseph Stiglitz, a well known American economist, recently stated that the UK had squandered the wealth of the North Sea. Let the next forty years be used for the benefit of Scotland. Since the election of the Scottish Government in May, and the promise to the Scottish people to hold a referendum in the second half of this term which will allow us to decide our own future the SNP has

Dear Santa I have been a good dog (mostly) this year and I have some things I would like for Christmas. I'd like some well behaved visitors. Particularly if they are small people: please ask them not to pull my tail or ride on my back. Secondly, it's my Christmas too, and I'd like to still have some walks and cuddles even when there is a lot of other activity going on. Thirdly, I don't have very good willpower, so please ask my owners not to leave turkey, chocolates, and other goodies around as they'll make me unwell. Fourthly and this is an extra special one please tell my owners I do not want to wear the reindeer antlers. If you could help me with these things Santa, I'll try my best to look pleased when my owners buy me a new collar and I'll happily sleep in my new basket straight away. Wags and woofs Fido

Gold, Frankincense & Myrrh These words are now part of our seasonal vocabulary, but are the items still around today? Of course, we know what gold is, but what about frankincense and myrrh? Gold holds a unique place in our lives for its numerous remarkable qualities; no other metal is as useful as gold. It’s familiar to all of us as a precious metal used for jewellery and various other objects but did you realise that it was one of the first metals to be discovered by humans? For around 7000 years, almost every culture that has ever existed has revered gold and used it to symbolise wealth, power, beauty, permanence and triumph. From currency to jewellery, medals to medicine, this shining yellow metal has countless uses. Gold never tarnishes or rusts and can be melted and formed into remarkab ly intricate shapes. It can be pulled into extreme ly fine wire or hamme red into thin sheets. A piece of gold just 5mm in diameter can be beaten into a foil sheet half a meter square and thread can be created that is delicate enough to use for embroidery. Highly efficient and reliable at conducting electricity, gold is used in almost every electronic device from televisions to mobile phones, computers to calculators. It’s also used in aerospace projects due to its unfailing competence. Since 700BC gold has been used in dentistry for fillings and crowns because it is hypoallergenic and easy to mould. Gold has also been utilised in medicine for generations and is still used today to treat many conditions. Frankincense and Myrrh are aromatic resins gathered from trees and it is said they were once more valuable than gold. Frankincense comes from the Boswellia tree and has been used for millennia for its medicinal properties to promote healthy digestion and to cure skin problems. It is gathered from the young tree by scoring the bark with a knife, allowing the oozing sap to harden on the trunk before being scraped off into containers. The resin is still used in perfume, aromatherapy and, as the name implies, burned as incense. It is also employed as an insect repellent thereby protecting against mosquito borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. Myrrh comes from a tree called Commiphora which grows in North Africa. The resin is collected in a similar way to frankincense. Myrrh was used in traditional medicine as an antiseptic and anti inflammatory treatment. It was also made into incense and perfumes. Until about the 15th century myrrh was used in Egypt as an embalming material in mummies and formed a major part of the funerary rituals of the time. Today myrrh is used as an antiseptic in mouthwashes, toothpaste and cough medicines. Its pleasant scent is used in many modern toiletries and cosmetics as well as incense. An excellent insecticide, myrrh wood is used in building to repel termites and burning it helps keep mosquitoes away. Employed since before Biblical times, gold, frankincense and myrrh have continued to be useful and desirable and still remain in our lives in many ways.
