Penicuik Petanque
We are pleased to announce that Midlothian Council have kindly agreed to let us use the Jackson Street School site as a temporary home while we seek funding to build a new purpose built play area. Our social games recommence every Sunday from 24th June to end of October at 1 pm weather permitting at Jackson St. Open to all - no experience required. If you need to borrow boules please let me know in advance.
Penicuik Petanque have joined the new Penicuik Sport Hub. The Sport Hub is a new initiative supported by Midlothian Council and Sport Scotland and aims to increase participation in sport in Penicuik. The Sport Hub is holding a Big Launch event in Penicuik Park on 2nd September from midday. Entry is free and you will have the opportunity to try a range of sports from the participating clubs and learn more about the Sport Hub and its aims. Three petanque players from Penicuk have been competing in the Scottish Petanque Associations international qualifying series this year. After two rounds Bob Macdonald and John McAllister (playing with Eileen Moonie from Perth) are sitting in 1 2th position. Colin Stewart and his team (Istvan Poka from Troon and Derek Adam from Edinburgh) are currently in first place with maximum ranking points having won both rounds so far. With 2 rounds left both teams have an excellent chance of being selected for the 201 3 Scotland squad. PENICUIK AND DISTRICT NEIGHBOURHOOD
A comprehensive plan setting out the future of Penicuik and District has been agreed by local people working closely with local partner organisations. Copies of the plan are now available in Penicuik and
District, for example in Penicuik Town Hall, Community Learning Development at Penicuik High School and Penicuik Library or to download from the council website at: www.midlothian.gov.uk/penicuikplan. Nearly 1 000 people who live and work in Penicuik gave their thoughts on what they liked about the local area and what could be improved. These opinions have been used to form a local plan which is now on display at Council link. The plan sets out 93 actions which will be undertaken over the next five years. Through the effort of local people, voluntary organisations and formal partners such as Midlothian Council, NHS Lothian and Lothian and Borders Police, some of these actions have already been successfully achieved, including: * Cinema sessions for young people are running at Penicuik Town Hall in a partnership between Penicuik Youth Forum and Penicuik Community Development Trust. * Midlothian Council has secured funding to widen the borrow a brolly scheme in Penicuik. * Two bus information carousels have been installed in both health centres * The 47 Sunday Lothian Bus service has been reinstated. The group is appealing for more enthusiastic local people to get involved and ensure the other actions also become a reality. The Penicuik and District Neighbourhood Plan implementation group has six vacancies to fill. The group will meet six times in 201 2/201 3 to receive reports on progress, follow up on any actions which are not progressing and provide updates on the successes which have been achieved. Locals are being encouraged to get involved and ensure their community plan becomes a reality. The partners involved have also thanked all those who have contributed to get the plan to this stage. Contact the Regeneration team at Midlothian Council 01 31 271 31 99 for further information.

Committee members of the Branch and in particular our Chairman and local government candidate Sandy Forrest wish to express thanks to all who gave support on the 3rd of May. Sandy would also like to give thanks to all members and supporters who gave so much of their time to help with this campaign. It is very much appreciated. For those who are not involved there is a huge amount of time spent fighting an election and so much work and effort is given throughout the year to allow people to be involved in the democratic process. Our branch have regular meetings along with fund raising/social events throughout the year and in particular we wish to give thanks to Sir Malcolm Rifkind for his ongoing time and support.

My passions include fashion (of course!), art and dancing. After I graduate in June, I am going on to begin a new job with the fashion company Jones & Jones at their design studio in London. There, I will be working as a part of a small team as a production assistant, producing gorgeous cocktail dresses! Being an ambitious person, I aim to do well in my new job, hopefully work my way through the career ladder and one day hopefully be a head designer or come back to Scotland and set up my own boutique. I have had a great upbringing in the small town that is Penicuik, and have not felt like it has held me back in any way. I would advise young people to be ambitious, aim high and work hard for what they want to achieve. It will end up being worthwhile in the end. Suzi Ross suzannah.g.ross@googlemail.com 07747505350

Hi there, my name is Suzi Ross, I am a 22 year old fashion designer originally from Penicuik. I went to Penicuik High School, then went on to study Fashion Design at Heriot Watt University in Galashiels. I have just completed my honours year, which included designing and making my own fashion collection (range of six outfits, 1 2 garments in total), as well as doing a photoshoot and fashion film to promote this collection. Last summer I also did a summer internship at House of Holland, where I got to work closely with the head designer on their A/W 201 2 collection.

1 7 June: 'Into the Wild': With his sturdy cast and confident direction, Sean Penn has turned a complex work of non-fiction like Into the Wild into an accessible and poignant character study. The true story of the post-collegiate wanderings of a young Virginia man, who divorces himself from his friends, family, and possessions in search of a greater spiritual knowledge and communion with nature in Alaska. 24 June: Leni Riefenstahl's 'Olympia': The 1 936 Olympics produced a major work of art, Leni Riefenstahl’s greatest movie, 'Olympia', released in 1 938 in 2 parts, “The Festival of Nations,” and “The Festival of Beauty.” Riefenstahl used the most up-to-date feature filmmaking techniques and technology. make some further improvements to our premises at West Street. A project close to our hearts is to provide a stair lift. It’s hard getting funds for anything these days, but we’re doing our best, and we’re very glad to have Jo Buckley on our committee, who is experienced and pro-active with grant applications. She just managed to secure a spot of funding for the Arts Festival, too. Other grant applications are being made to refurbish the back The committee is, as ever, busy applying for grants to windows, to make repairs to guttering, and to

replace the stair carpets. Let’s hope that at least some of these dreams are realised! The work we have already achieved over the last few years has greatly improved our historic venue. In June, Christine Suter will show examples of her weaving in an exhibition entitled "Stripes and Checkers", and in July we look forward to hosting the work of students from Edinburgh College of Art. And as always, please come and see us – come to an event, join in with Making Space Penicuik free crafting in the community sessions and pop into our cosy Café to enjoy the home cooked refreshments! Now, in the summer you will find the Cafe garden very popular. Upstairs, browse the craft shop for that special gift or unique card. We now display a range of the crafts for sale in the glass cabinet in the café.
Life is full of lessons, some we will take on the chin, others will leave us on our knees but no matter what the lesson the reason for them is always the same... our growth. Archangel Jeremiel understands that there have been some hard lessons for us all recently, some where we never thought we were going to get through but the time of those hardships is coming to an end. We are at the top of the mountain now, it is time to take note as to what we have achieved, where our hard struggles have brought us to and to rejoice in that!! There is a sense of coming together, a community arising where once was lost. Do not fear your neighbours, welcome them into your life, speak with them, share time with them, we are at our strongest when we are strong with our community, when we come together as one voice rather than many. Take some time this month to be part of your community, to be part of a powerful spiral of strength, nurturing and achievement!!

PENICUIK ATHELETIC FC
The football season came to an end on 1 2th May with a must win away tie against fellow promotion challengers, Broxburn Athletic, and the victor would gain promotion to the Super League. Prior to this game we lost away 1 -0 at Armadale, where we created enough chances to win two games, won our last two home games 2-1 against Arniston Rangers and Glenrothes and drew 1 -1 away against Broughty
Athletic. These results saw us sit proudly at the top of the league. However, both Sauchie and Broxburn had games in hand and, when the crunch came and we went to play Broxburn, Broxburn won comfortably, consigning us to another season in the Premier League. A disappointing end to what has been a difficult season in a very competitive league but we'll be back wiser and stronger next season, ready for another battle. Finally, I would just like to
