We were thrilled to win The WRI Award, and also the J Lambie Plaque for Gillian Walker's cake which won Best Exhibit in the Baking and WRI sections! years and sometimes wonder what I will do with all my free time. However it is time to retire as I am in my 65th year and I want to spend time with my husband ,family and friends.

This year 201 2 will see 1 2 SNP candidates standing in 6 wards across Midlothian. To go into administration in the council we need to have 1 0 successful candidates. I hope all 1 2 make it and change things in Midlothian council for the better. I have been in opposition for the last 5 years and it SO hard to change things when you are the opposition councillors. Change is good, it brings new and fresh people to work on your behalf. Labour have been in charge in Midlothian for as long as I can remember, let us have a new regime at the helm of local politics.

The majority of people who responded stated that they would like more consultation before a decision is made and would prefer that the two schools remain. Andrew Coventry said I realise how important excellent educational opportunities are in enabling individuals to fulfil their potential in life. Derek Rosie is a member of the Business Improvement District Committee, this is a way in which local businesses can help improve their own trading environments. The aim is to get business owners locally to form a steering group that helps identify projects and services. What is clear that if BIDS is to succeed then it requires significant support from the local council. Councillor Margaret Wilson who also attends BIDS meetings has been attempting to get the Council to allow the site of Jackson Street School to be used as a car park, hopefully with a change in administration at Midlothian Council there will be a more sympathetic ear. Car Parking in the centre of Penicuik is a barrier to improving the footfall, shoppers require more than 90 minutes, especially if visiting the Health Centre, Dentist or a hairdresser then want to meet friends

PENICUIK AND LOANHEAD LABOUR PARTY

At the last Meeting of Penicuik and Loanhead Labour

Party Councillor Adam Montgomery advised Comrades that floodlighting for Penicuik Athletic F.C. AND Penicuik Rugby Club were now in hand with costs being met from finance available to local councillors. The cost of £50.000 for both sets of lights will be financed by £40,000 from Councillor Montgomery and £1 0,000 from Councillor Brown. Councillor Montgomery stated I have been working on this proposal for a good while now and I am delighted Councillor Brown has agreed to make up the shortfall. This shall be a tremendous facility for both clubs and is another major improvement to sports facilities in the public park. Adam also reported he was getting excellent feedback on his campaign for a rail link from Penicuik to Edinburgh. Penicuik is the biggest town in Scotland without a rail link and the elections give people in our community an opportunity to have their say. I have costings already prepared and this link to Penicuik is easily delivered so support the rail link campaign and get the train out to Penicuik. If you wish to join the Scottish Labour Party please contact Ian Miller (secretary) 30. Loanburn Ave. Penicuik tel. 01 968 677807.

Angel Card of the Month ~ Archangel Chamuel Chamuel comes forth this month to help you find love in your life. This love may be of an external source, such as a love for a job, relationship or place, but more than likely this will be to find a love of yourself. So many of us look outwards to find happiness, to find love, when what we really need is to find love for ourselves. If you asked yourself how much you loved you, what would be the answer? Many of us forget to find that inner love for who we are, we believe that the answers will be found in the things around us, when really the love that we yearn for, is the love within ourselves. Chamuel will help us this month to find that love, to help us begin to love the person that we are, the body that we are in, to love the life that we lead. Open your heart to Chamuel and he will lead you inside of your heart, to connect with this love that we all have, within our own self. facing from child birth, relationships, family, sex, work and money. This play examines social circumstance at the time of the rise of Thatcher. Britain had high unemployment, strikes, enforced poverty, issues in Europe, PUNK, fuel costs and national security worries in the middle east. Ring any bells? As an active theatre company we are seeking to extend our following and appeal by producing plays, shows and musical productions to suit audiences and participants expectations alike. We welcome all members of the community to come and participate or support the shows as the audience. From Pantomime every December to One, Two and Three act Plays and Musicals there will always be an opportunity for you to be involved. We appreciate that not everyone can do everything or wants to be involved with everything we produce so there is no all year commitment required, unless you want to of course. And our productions always need a crew backstage, costumes, props, scenery lighting and sound.

We have great knowledge and are enthusiastic in keeping live theatre in Penicuik and reach a wide audience throughout the year. As a consequence we are able to offer some competitive advertising and sponsorship opportunities to the local community businesses which help keep us running through out the year. We appreciate the support we have received from the local businesses this year. Next Year sees the rebirth of the Musical (in August 201 3 )for which we will require a vocal chorus and lead singers. Meetings for organising this will take place in late April and early May after the current production is well under way in its rehearsal. If you would like to be involved in this production e-mail us on our marketing e-mail address to be kept informed of developments with this production.

Arts & Culture Hello, my name is Christopher Diaz. I run my own Breakdance school called ‘Steps of Style’ in Penicuik. I started the business in Edinburgh 3 years ago in late 2009, with support and funding from the Princes Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT). I’ve been breakdancing for over 9 years now and have been teaching for 5 of those years. I have delivered breakdance taster sessions to a vast amount of high schools and primary schools throughout Edinburgh.

Page 18

As well as this I have been a breakdance teacher for a numerous amount of dance companies/schools. Currently at this moment in time, I am still a dance teacher for a dance company called KIC Dance, which is situated in Bonnyrigg. I’ve worked there for nearly 3 years. I also run dance workshops for Merchiston Castle School throughout the summer and Easter holidays. Last year I entered Sacred Heart, Cornbank, Maurice wood, Beeslack & Penicuik High schools and ran some taster sessions as part of the schools health and fitness week, which was a big success. Page 20 suggest events and activities for the coming year that YOU would like to see happening. Making Space Penicuik (MSP) is still going strong: Jenni and Ania now meet for crafting sessions in room 2 at West Street Art Centre on Fridays afternoons ~1 2:30 – 3:00 pm. Other folks of all ages are welcome. They ask you to check on the MSP Community page to confirm that it’s going ahead that particular week, as occasionally they can’t make it (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Making-SpacePenicuik/1 828371 71 730809). Otherwise, you are welcome to join MSP’s drop in 'crafting in the community' sessions at 1 2:00 noon on Saturdays at the PCDT coffee morning in the Town Hall. The Committee have started to plan this year’s Penicuik and District Arts Festival, and before long we’ll be posting details of the annual Art Exhibition and Turner Prize competition. Because we seem to have so many gifted photographers in Penicuik, this year we will also run a separate Photography Exhibition, with a new “Christie Prize” for the best

entry. Watch this space for more details! It’ll also be worth looking out for details of our annual mid-summer party. This will be a good excuse to come and blether with old and new friends, eat and drink, entertain or be entertained, and of course, enjoy the glorious summer! The committee are also busy applying for grants to make some further improvements to our premises at West Street. A project close to our hearts is to provide a stair lift. It’s very hard to get funds for anything these days, but we’re doing our best, and we’re very glad to have Jo Buckley on our committee, who is experienced and pro-active with grant applications. Other grant applications are being made to refurbish the back windows, to make repairs to guttering, to replace the chairs for events, and to replace the stair carpets. Let’s hope that at least some of these dreams are realised! The work we have already achieved over the last few years has greatly improved our events venue. As I write (April), Tony McKale’s Community Education class are exhibiting their work in the café gallery. It’s a really good show, so I hope you
